Mikhail Baryshnikov made his film debut in this lightweight but entertaining drama about the relationship between a renowned ballerina (Anne Bancroft) and the woman (Shirley MacLaine) who had trained with her but had given up dance to become a wife, mother, and teacher. Between MacLaine's envy over her friend's career and the attention her own ballerina daughter (Leslie Browne) is getting, MacLaine's character goes through a complicated crisis. The two actresses carry the story very well and probably camouflage its thinness; they even make a somewhat condescending climax involving a catfight seem like a good idea. A subplot involving a developing romance between the virginal Browne and Baryshnikov's womanizer makes for pretty window dressing. More memorable are dance sequences featuring each in splendid performance. Baryshnikov's leaps are something to behold. --Tom Keogh
Description
As young dancers, they were best friends and fierce rivals. Deedee (Shirley MacLaine) left the stage for marriage and motherhood, while Emma (Anne Bancroft) would become an international ballet icon. But when Deedee's teenage daughter (Leslie Browne in her film debut) is invited to join Emma's dance company and begins an affair with a young Russian star (Mikhail Baryshnikov in his film debut), the two women are forced to confront the choices they've made, the resentments they've hidden, and the emotional truths they must face at THE TURNING POINT.

Tom Skerritt, Anthony Zerbe and the artists of The American Ballet Theatre co-star in this OscarĀ®-nominated classic written by Arthur Laurents (THE WAY WE WERE, WEST SIDE STORY) and directed by Herbert Ross (STEEL MAGNOLIAS, FOOTLOOSE) that became one of the most acclaimed dramas of the decade and remains among the most stunning dance films of all time.

3 out of 5 stars over the top.......2007-07-01

The focus was more on the music than on the dancing that would be done to the music.

5 out of 5 stars A great film finally on DVD.......2007-05-13

This is a great film in every way. I am so happy that it has finally been released on DVD. It is a plus to anyone's collection.

Aside from great performances by the major stars who are at their best, the ballet performances by Baryshnikov and the other artists are worth the price.

Even if you aren't into Ballet, this film will give you an appreciation of the art form.

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing!!!!!.......2007-02-24

This movie is a complete downer.
Not only does it start, continue, and end in a downward spiral, I was appalled at the foul language, the inappropriate sistuations, and the sexual content in this movie.
I would never recommend this movie to anyone looking for wholesome entertainment.
I'm very disappointed that I wasted my money on this trash.
Even the parts of dance scenes that have been talked up in other reviews, I found disappointing. I was not thrilled by beauty like I was expecting to be. There is only one dance in the entire movie and it's short.
On an overall rating. I give it a negative 2!!!

4 out of 5 stars It's Worn Surprisingly Well.......2007-02-12

As a callow youth, I had no interest in seeing THE TURNING POINT when it came out. Ballet? Please! So after a judicious pause of three decades, I've finally gotten around to seeing it. And I must say that, unlike its contemporaries, this film has aged reasonably well. It simply isn't the dated embarrassment that so many 1970s "classics" have become.

This is partially because of its untraditional story arc and cast of characters. This film has THREE female leads, yet it hails from an era when you were lucky to get even one. And THE TURNING POINT is also a good reminder of what terrific actresses Anne Bancroft and Shirley MacLaine were. (MacLaine should get a lifetime achievement award for bad eye make-up.) And dancer Emilia Rodgers, who plays Shirley's daughter, she is well cast in her role as an inscrutable and precocious young woman.

Caution: Yes, there are extended dance numbers.
Violence Alert: There is a convincing brawl between MacLaine and Bancroft herein. I'm still shaking.

DVD PROBLEM: For some reason, this DVD does not come with any subtitles. This is problematic every time Mikhail Baryshnikov stops dancing and starts speaking!

5 out of 5 stars Very Moving Film.......2007-01-05

The story of friendship, The story of what could have been
The story of choices, That's this story and it is acted beautifully by
Anne Bancroft,& Shirley MacLaine. The bonus is the beautiful ballet dancing. A lovely Film !

4 out of 5 stars other reviewer(s) clearly whack.......2005-01-04

This DVD is as good as the previous in the T.V. series. While the OVA was awesome, perhaps those relying on that series needs to change their point of view. Although the packaging admittedly appears to represent the ladies as ho's, I believe the series continues to be refreshing, both in it's treatment of the female psyche and it's basic embracement of play in genre.

4 out of 5 stars Hmm... Slightly Dissapointing........2004-12-28

I have to say that I looked forward to this DVD alot. I was slightly disapointed with Yomiko's voice. I know that it has been a few years but what is with the british accent. I am hopeing that it just her depression over her current situation and it gets better as the series progresses. Over all this series keeps you on your toes. It is very enjoyable.

3 out of 5 stars Fans of the OVA be warned.......2004-12-22

Just to start, I am a huge fan of this series, and I loved the OVAs, but this volume just felt lacking to me. The first episode was incredible, as it should have been, after where they left us last volume.

The Second episode is your typical recap episode, and although you think they are going to give you some background, they don't give you any of the major plot events, and it just seems empty.

The Third and Fourth episodes on this DVD are what really put me off. If you watched the OVA, and you like the OVA, then prepare yourself. Yomiko is back, or at least her character is, but the Yomiko we all know and love, is apparently dead. The voice actor for her doesn't even try to capture her original voice, and it came off sounding sub par. She is just not the same person you remember from the OVA, it's like they were afraid to make her cool, because they didn't want to take away from the paper sisters. I am a big fan of bringing back characters that people like, but if you do, I implore that you do it right.

All in all, I thought that the first episode was the only one that was worth the purchase. If you like the series so far, you need this volume to be able to complete it. Just be warned, You may not like this one as much as the past 3.

5 out of 5 stars Indeed, Turning Point........2004-12-22

This volume is really a turning point.

Yomiko Readman fans will be happy with this volume. We also get a slightly altered opening scene and a new ending song in this volume.

This volume finally leads us back to the story behind R.O.D. Read Or Die Yomiko Readman "The Paper" and from now on, the original OVA series are being integrated into this TV series.

Welcome back Yomiko Readman!

Description

THE Turning Point -
The earliest 'rockumentary' of John Mayall and his musicians filmed in their homes, dressing rooms, motorways, airports, clubs, concert halls and at festivals. In 1969, Mayall changing the emphasis of his band away from the 'electric circus' of lead guitar and drums to a more gentle approach without drums and with acoustic guitar, flutes and saxophones. The Turning Point celebrates this revolutionary period.

THE Godfather Of British Blues
John Mayall's career in the blues spans over 40 years. During that time he has been cited as a major influence by the likes of Eric Clapton, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Peter Green.

This new film biography features contributions from himself, his family, fellow musicians, colleagues and friends in interviews and performances. Rare archive film from all periods of his career marks his achievements and some of the events that formed them.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars A waste of time and money.......2007-02-21

Unfortunately, you don't get even one full song played by Mayall on this DVD.
I don't have any complaints about the cinematic aspect, but what a disappointment it was not to have him play in concert. The entire DVD plays "California" in the background, whetting your appetite for ANY full performance, but to no avail.

5 out of 5 stars Great companion to The 70th Birthday concert DVD ........2006-07-24

This is a DOCUMENTARY on John .. NOT a Concert . It gives you an insight into what makes him tick ..and how he maintained over the years . It uses footage from an earlier black and white "rockumentary"(included in full on this disc ) filmed by the same guy back in what .. 69? the Turning Point era .. . It is put together tremendously well ,The new footage , blended with the old .. and I highly recommend this DVD to any British Blues Fan who wants to get a more intimate look at Mayall .It is one of my most played music DVD's, and I have a LOT!

2 out of 5 stars For completists only!!.......2005-09-14

I have been a Mayall fan for 35 years. Don't waste your money on this one. Buy the 70th birthday concert DVD instead.
Not much about the Turning Point as such. If you expect some detailed information on this classic album then you will be disappointed.
The other irritation is the repetition of footage between the two features on this DVD.
I'll sell my copy on ebay.

4 out of 5 stars This is a "MUST" for any mayall fan!!!!!!!.......2004-07-02

I rated this 4 out of 5 stars ONLY because I could not play the sound on my computers DVD player. ( I had a problem with the 70th b-day concert as well).I Think Eagle-Vision needs to correct this.
ANYWAY, what a DVD, I of course ( probably like most fans), went to the "turning point" part of the CD. It is only 24 min. long ( my only other complaint is, if this was your last shot at this, they should have included the WHOLE T.P. movie, it was 1 1/2 hours long.).
How cool it was to see Mayall in the old days, seeing the old T.P. band members. There is a part where it shows him going to the "Bath" festival in England in 1970. It also shows them playing the T.P. songs in Mayall's home. Also some quick recording sessions.
The coolest part is at the end when it shows Mayall walking thru the Heathrow airport with the band members to get their tickets & board the plane. How differant he looks, tall & skinny.
All in all, what a great part.

The 2nd part is the documentary that was shown on the BBC last year. The thing about this one is that they talked a good 5 minutes in various parts to Mayall's FORMER wife- Pamela. His current wife Maggie was shown only once or twice.
I loved this one as well, we all know about his history & who played what, where etc. What I enjoyed is that they had parts where Mayall's house was shown & his Cinema that he has. There is a museum that he constucted that has all cool things in it. ( Although he told the camera to pan on everything, & to much regret, didn't).
His son Jason was interviewed as well & talks about how he came to live with John and the wild parties he had there. He also said that Mayall's house was frequented by actors, gansters, and was well known around Holleywood for his famous bar-called the "Brain Damage Club".

On a sad note it showed his home burning up in the canyon & Mayall says to this day he has not gotten over it.
It also shows a clip from 1975 from an English TV show where John almost looks "DISCO-ISH" Shame on you John....
This part was VERY informative & was great viewing.

Last, there is a picture gallery on the DVD was contains around 20 pictures, most early shots from 1970-1972. These are worth the price of the cd alone. It also says that he was VERY good friends with Frank Zappa & in his drinking days, he sold his car & relied on his friends like Zappa to cart him around.
So, in summary, you MUST get this DVD ASAP, again the only downfalls ( for me anyway) is the no sound when I played on my DVD ( which may not be a problem for anyone else). & the lack of the WHOLE T.P. movie.
This one you will play over & over like I did 3 times the day I bought it.....

1. Sabu vs. Abyss in s Barbed Wire Massacre Match- I will have to say this was not the best one on one wrestling match but you have got to give it up for these two guys for putting there bodies on the line. This was a hard match to watch to imagin the pain that these two went through was amazing. There were some average spots to start the match with there bodies going into the barbwire and there was a sweet spot were Sabu hit a suicide dive over the top rope barbwire. They brought in some barbwire boards and Sabu drove Abyss into them and than sandwiched him into them and hit a Arabian face buster for the win sick stuff here. Winner Sabu. Match Rating 8/10.
2. Matt Bentley and Austin Aries vs. Alex Shelly and Roderick Strong- This was a awesome match to fallow the last one up. A total opposite and it turned out to be great. This was just a high flying match and a fast pace match the way the X-Division was supposed to be. Not a whole lot to say about this match other than it had a lot of near falls and just a bunch of fun to watch. Winners Matt Bentley and Austin Aries. Match Rating 8/10.
3. Raven vs. Chris K- This was just a filler match. I liked the whole idea of how the were making a big war between raven and Larry because Raven never got a rematch for the title that he was screwed out of. That is all good but the match was just not to good because of how old both these guys are. I will say they tried hard and it was not to bad. Almost a brawl sort of and there was a nice moment were Raven hit a power bomb on the chair. Winner Raven. Match Rating 5/10.
4. The 4Live Crew vs. Team Canada- This match was an okay match this seemed like another filler. This also had a good storyline to it because of the 4Live crew history. This was just a solid wrestling match not to long which was good kept short. The nice part of the match was when Konan hit Kip James in the head with a chair and turned on the team great stuff and a big surprise. Winners Team Canada. Match Rating 6/10.\
5. The Diamonds in the rough vs. Sonjay Dutt, Chris Sabin, and Dale Torborg in a Baseball Brawl match- This was a match that I really enjoyed watching. Again this was almost a sort of X-Division type of match. A lot of people say that they don't like the baseball stars in TNA but I think they help them. Just a lot of fast pace high flying moves and some nice spots for A.J. Persiznski. Good stuff. Winners Sonjay Dutt, Chris Sabin, and Dale Torborg. Match Rating 7.5/10.
6. Monty Brown vs. Christian Cage a contenders match- This match had a great storyline and a lot of hype behind it was good but it could have been better. This was just a solid wrestling match with almost all of it controlled by brown. The one thing that I really did not like was brown controlled a lot of the match and than with basically with one move cage won the match. Still very solid and a fun start. Match Rating 7.5/10.
7. Americas Most Wanted vs. Team 3D in a tables match- This was just another solid match but It was more fun cause of the table aspect. There was some solid action including a lot of nice table spots and there were a few sick chair shots. There were a lot of spots were you thought that the team was going to put the other person through the table and they moved the table out of the way. Just a fun match to watch and some nice table spots as well. Winners Team 3D. Match Rating 7.5/10.
8. A.J. Styles vs. Samoa Joe for the X-Division title- This was easily the match of the night and a match of the year candidate. This was when Joe had just turned heel so there was a lot of bad blood going into this match and the crowd loved it. Also at this time Joe still had a undefeated streak on the line. The match started with A.J. controlling it but than Joe fought back. He nailed styles with tons of kicks to the face. There was just a lot of high flying moves and near falls including when Styles hit his finisher on Joe but Joe kicked out. Just a great match enjoyed by all. Winner and new X-Division champ Samoa Joe. Match Rating 9.5/10.
9. Jeff Jarret vs. Rhino for the NWA title- This was a decent main event. I would have rather seen Joe styles in the main event but this was still very good. They had a few matches before this but this was about the same. Not much to say just a average main event but nothing to bad tough to watch Jarret win again. Winner and still NWA champ Jeff Jarret. Match Rating 7/10.

Well that raps up another. I would give Turning Point 2005 a grade of 66/90 which means this is a awesome PPV. There was nothing awful on this card and a match of the year candidate. SO I think you should pick this up. If you can tell me if my review was helpful or not I would appreciate that. Thanks for your time.

4 out of 5 stars BARBED WIRE MASSACRE.......2007-01-25

I assume that this item is referring to 2005 edition of Turning Point because the release date on this product is November 28, 2006 and the event didn't happen until December. How could the DVD be released before the actual event happened?

Anyways, Turning Point 2005 was another good showing of PPV's from Total Non-Stop Action as this PPV had a mix of things for everyone's taste.

Barbed Wire Massacre: Sabu vs. Abyss - This match was just sick as you see moments like Sabu getting dropped on his neck into the barbed wire and Abyss squished inbetween two barbed wire boards. It's not as distubring as Sabu's last two barbed wire matches (Hardcore Homecoming & vs. Terry Funk) but it still leaves an impression.

Matt Bentley & Austin Aries vs. Alex Shelley & Roderick Strong - You can't go wrong with an X division tag team match & this is no exception as they're always right on the money.

Raven vs. Chris K. (Kanyon) - Again, just another wrestling match from Raven that really got dull at times with the inring storytelling from Raven & didn't do a good job of following up the previous matches.

4Life Kru vs. Team Canada - This match was just a backdrop to the big story of Konnan's heel turn & the breakup of the Kru which was being set up for months.

Basebrawl: Sonjay Dutt, Chris Sabin, Dale Torborg (a.k.a. The Demon from WCW) w/White Sox member AJ Pierzynski vs. Diamonds In The Rough - The match itself was good as you can't miss with Sabin & Dutt while the Diamonds are very underrated wrestlers. Bobby Heenan returns to commentary & he didn't miss a step.

Christian Cage vs. Monty Brown - This was better than their rematch at Destination X months later as Christian was able to work with Monty (which is no secret that he's limited in what he can do in the ring) to bring forth a great match.

Tables Match: AMW vs. Team 3D - Eventhough the DVD case says this was a title match, it wasn't. This was the best showing between these two teams as they brawled & wrestled while coming up with creative ways to set up & move the tables during the match.

X Division Champion AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe - It's no secret that the series between these two & Christopher Daniels were the talk of professional wrestling for a year & this match was no exception. AJ had a chunk of his lip busted open & still fought hard against Samoa Joe. The match of the night no questions asked.

NWA Champion Jeff Jarrett vs. Rhino - This match was the sterotypical formula of a Jarrett match. Wrestling, a big brawl throughout the arena, and an overload of outside interference. The match with the wrestling & brawling was actually very well but the match took a turn for the worst when ALL members of Team Canada kept interfearing in the end to cost Rhino the match. However, the big suprize here at the end was the tease of Sting coming to TNA with his bat, coat, and boots left in the middle of the ring.

Bottom line is that again, there wasn't a bad match here & it had something for everyone so I highly recommend this PPV from TNA.

4 out of 5 stars Uplifting.......2005-04-24

I bought this movie just for the sake of checking out an independent movie and I must say I was quite suprised at how it caught me. Not many movies exist that show the positive roles we can aspire to be as Latinos in this world. Among all of the stereotypes portrayed in the movie, we see aspiring Doctors and people working hard to make a better life for themselves. The actors may not be well known, but I guarentee by the end of the movie the message will be loud and clear. I especially recommend this movie for leadership retreats and cultural organizations looking to show how one can truely uplift themselves despite the impossible odds.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The main event is awesome!.......2006-11-24

This is one of their best DVD's. Main event is definitely a five star match. Elix Skipper does an insane move from the top of the cage. From top to bottom great action and matches. A must buy for any wrestling fan. DDP vs. Raven was a good match. 6 man tag was great even though I was not expecting much. I would definitely suggest to anyone to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME SHOW.......2006-07-15

When I saw this show I considered it the best wrestling show I have EVER watched period.

Matches:

Tag titles: Team Canada v.s 3LK: strong way to open the show. It is amazing how much better TNA's Tag team division is than WWE's!
8/10

Kid Kash, Kazarian, and Bently v.s Hector Gaza, Sonjay Dutt, and Sonny Siaki: Average X-division tag match. But an average X-division match is better than alot of good heavighweight mactches
7.5/10

Monty Brown v.s Abyss- Serengeti Survival match: really stiff physical match. Ends with a sick thumb tack spot where the back of Abyss' head becomes a pin cushion! 8/10

New York Connection v.s Pat Kenney and Johnny B Badd: Pretty much a filler, but it's kept fairly short which is good. 5/10

DDP v.s Raven: Suprisingly a good performance from both men. 7.5/10

X Division title: Chris Sabin v.s Petey Williams: AWESOME X DIVISION MATCH. These two have INCREDIBLE chemistry. 9.5/10

AJ Styles and Jeff Hardy v.s Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, and Jeff Jarett: I was dispointed about no Macho Man, but his short appearance at the end actually drug the match down. Other than that is was a good tag match with tons of star power. Jeff(Jarett) and AJ do alot of the work. 8/10

6 sides of steel: Losing team must disband: AMW v.s XXX: Absolutly incredible main event! Primetime's hurricaranna was amazing, but there were MANY other strong points to this match!
10/10

Also I should note they did a parody throught the night of Vince Mcmahon and Triple H which was really funny. It leads to TNA showing the footage of TNA wrestlers greeding WWE Superstars in Orlando!

I suggest buying the TNA Anthology which contains Victory Road 2004 and Lockdown 2005 as well. (Two other great shows)

Final grade: A

4 out of 5 stars TNA's Second Effort Was Better Than Their First.......2006-06-18

This was TNA's second 3 hour PPV and they delievered a better card here than Victory Road as far as in-ring action.

Tag Team Champions 3Live Kru (The Truth & B.G.) vs. Team Canada (Eric Young & Bobby Roode) - Nice tag team match but nothing really memorable.

Kid Kash, Kazarian, Matt Bentley vs. Hector Garza, Sonjay Dutt, Sonny Siaki - Nice six man X division match.

Serengeti Survival Match: Monty Brown vs. Abyss - This was better than the Monster's Ball match earlier in the night but there were parts where it just seemed the drag. The ending with Abyss taking the thumbtacks spot was the sickest spot I saw with thumbtacks since he landed on the back of his head.

Johnny B. Badd & Pat Kennedy (Simond Diamond) vs. Glen Gilberti (Disco Infernio) & Johnny Swinger - Filler, skip it.

DDP vs. Raven - Solid match between these two & this one match was better than DDP's whole WWE run.

X Division Champion Petey Williams vs. Chris Sabin - This is tons better than the Victory Road match with Williams & Styles since they let the wrestlers do the wrestling & not much interference from D'Amore.

A.J. Styles, Jeff Hardy, Randy Savage vs. Jeff Jarrett, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash - Putting the whole Kings Of Wrestling storyline aside (including those Honky Tonk Man ripoff costumes Hall & Nash wore)...this was the best Hall looked thought his TNA run and the heel team did a great job making Styles & Hardy look good throughout the whole match. The big jip though was that Savage came out at the end & did a horrible pin on Jarrett & ended up pinning the match.

Steel Cage Match: America's Most Wanted vs. Triple X - Weather it's WWE or TNA...this was the best tag team match (to this point) that I've seen in years! Just great chemistry & the whole "losers can never team again" stipulation just added more to this encounter. Primetime's stop from the top is really something to see for yourself.

DVD extras just include backstage footage.

Aside from the one dud, this again was solid from top to bottom & worth the money weather you get this alone or as part of the TNA Anthology set.
