Few movies are as vividly tactile as Young Adam. The way the cold blue light of Scotland envelopes everything--wooden bannisters, rippling water, rough fabric, coal soot caked in human skin, and flesh itself--makes you feel like you could reach out and touch it all. A failed writer named Joe (Ewan McGregor, Big Fish), slumming on a coal barge, finds himself drawn to barge's owner Ella (Tilda Swinton, Orlando, The Deep End), despite the presence of her husband Les (Peter Mullan, My Name is Joe). But Joe's passion is haunted by the girl he's abandoned (Emily Mortimer, Lovely & Amazing), whose memory becomes more and more powerful as a murder trial unfolds. The acting in Young Adam is magnificent, without affectation yet completely affecting. It's a moody film, but its deep engagement with its characters and the world they inhabit will make a lasting impression. --Bret Fetzer

There is a thinly, thinly, thinly veiled attempt at creating a plot and at acting in this fairly dirty blue movie. Kara (Venesa Talor) is sent to experience bodily pleasure by her alien species, which leads to numerous unconnected, plot-irrelevant encounters with all kinds of buxom babes and buff guys. The pool, the massage parlor, the avant-garde theater--these kooky humans seem to be going at it everywhere! Kara must believe that she's landed not on Earth, but the planet Silicone, but she never seems to kvetch about it. On the plus side the actors are attractive and keep their wooden deliveries at a minimum to allow full enjoyment of the wretched porno-quality soundtrack. Surprisingly, no mention of thanks to Lee Strasberg in the final credits. Plenty o' skin. --Keith Simanton

1 out of 5 stars Femalien.......2007-05-31

A soft adult movie. Good to watch once if you are in the mood for that type of movie.Save your money and get something else.

1 out of 5 stars Crappy.......2007-03-27

Should have 0-star as a choice. Horrible excuse for a sci-fi movie. I don't see what the other reviewers seen in here. Poor DVD quality. Lucky for me, I don't plan on watching it again.

3 out of 5 stars hummm.......2007-03-19

This wasn't what I thought it was more soft core I guess.I watched it 2 times and I guess I got what I paid for.LOL

3 out of 5 stars Good enough not to skip ahead.......2006-09-04

There is enough of a plot and the acting is good enough that this movie is watchable, even if it is not just the soft porn that you are looking for.

2 out of 5 stars Relaxing viewing time.......2006-07-17

A DVD of clear good photography and quite pleasant to watch but a little embarrasing in family company. Really only suitable for watching in private.

Billed as "the day music changed history," the Live Aid concerts of July 13, 1985, were held to raise money to fight the horrifying famines sweeping Africa. The brainchild of Bob Geldof and representing the efforts of countless musicians and technicians, Live Aid was a genuine and inspiring effort to help the victims of an overwhelming calamity. Twenty years after the twin concerts (one in London, one in Philadelphia) were broadcast worldwide, the 4-DVD treatment furthers the cause, with proceeds going toward the Band Aid Trust.

The DVD set opens with a heartbreaking documentary on the crisis, followed by videos of the two hit songs that represented the collaborative nature of Geldof's efforts—Band Aid' s "Do They Know It's Christmas?" and USA for Africa's "We Are the World." Since Live Aid was never intended to be released in a recorded format, preservation of TV footage has been unreliable, resulting in some glaring omissions. Led Zeppelin's semi-reunion doesn't appear, and neither does a legendary session with Bob Dylan, Ron Wood, and Keith Richards. Some sets by performers who were popular at the time may inspire either nostalgic glee or head-scratching (Kiki Dee fans, you know who you are). Sprinkled amid these performances are a couple real gems, including a performance by Run DMC, the event's sole representative of the ascendant rap movement. Much of the music here was a passing fad, but the sentiment that brought it all together is timeless. -- Ryan Boudinot

Description

Any music fan can tell you exactly where they were on July 13th, 1985. There had never been a concert event of such magnitude-the biggest names in music performing in a concert broadcast live from 2 continents to an audience of over 1.5 billion. It is estimated that 85% of the world's television sets were tuned in to Live Aid that day. Now, for the first time on home video, you can own the concert that was arguably the biggest rock event in history-featuring David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Madonna, Paul McCartney, Sting, The Who, U2, Neil Young, and many, many more. Over 10 hours of performances in a premium-packaged 4-DVD set. Royalties will benefit Band Aid Trust, which continues to provide direct hunger relief in Africa.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Moment In Time..........2007-06-05

Perhaps I'm being too generous by giving the LIVE AID dvd set 5-stars. As another reviewer pointed out, many performances are left off of this set. However, some of the biggest acts of the 80s are shown performing their monster hits with the exception of TINA TURNER, WHAM, and THE THOMPSON TWINS. Although these performers do appear with other singers/musicians, the footage of them performing their hits was either destroyed or lost. I'm sure there might be other examples of groups/singers who appear on the LIVE AID dvds and they're not performing their big hits, but, as far as I can tell, most of them are.

The fact that there's even a dvd set available is a miracle in itself.

A booklet that comes with the dvd set explains the idea behind LIVE AID and how BOB GELDOF (singer of THE BOOMTOWN RATS) saw a BBC News report on television in 1984 (the news footage is included at the start of dvd #1) about the famine going on in Africa/Ethiopia. He wanted to do something about it and formed BAND AID in the UK. This in turn formed U.S.A FOR AFRICA in the US, which ultimately led to the LIVE AID concert which happened on July 13, 1985. The concert was filmed by MTV, ABC and the BBC, and aired on its respective channel with an estimated 1.5 billion viewers around the world.

According to the dvd's producer, Jill Sinclair, Geldof wanted the concert to be shown only once and not recorded. ABC took Geldof at his word and destroyed the footage so it could never be re-broadcast again. The BBC ignored him but lost some of the footage, while the videos that weren't lost, sat collecting dust. MTV found over 100 tapes of b-roll of the concert and so Sinclair, and the rest of the LIVE AID dvd team, combined MTV's footage of the LIVE AID concert, with the remaining BBC footage and that's how we get this remarkable 4-dvd set! So bravo to Jill Sinclair and the dvd team.

The concert took place at Wembley Stadium in London and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. The dvds go back and forth from Wembley to JFK, but transitions smoothly, so there aren't any jarring cuts in between the musical acts. Considering that this concert was recorded using analog equipment and was meant for a one-time only showing, the footage itself has been restored as best as it could be and it looks pretty good (sharp, vibrant color, etc.). There are some instances where wavy-horizontal lines appear on close-up shots on some of the performances, and Sinclair explains in the booklet that this is a phenomenon called "microphany," which happens when the "camera lens is affected by great volume." The lines aren't that distracting since they aren't colored, and they don't distort the picture, but they're just noticeable. It only happens once in a while and according to the booklet, only on some UK performances.

Along with the performances, the LIVE AID dvd set also includes extras:

DVD #1
**BBC TV NEWS REPORT
**BAND AID - DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS - music video
**U.S.A FOR AFRICA - WE ARE THE WORLD - "..."

DVD #4-(includes performances recorded at different locations/times and either broadcast that day or never televised)

**INXS - What You Need; Don't Change
**B.B. KING - Why I Sing The Blues; Don't Answer The Door; Rock Me Baby
**ASHFORD & SIMPSON with TEDDY PENDERGRASS - Reach Out And Touch(Somebody's Hand)
**RUN DMC - King Of Rock
**CLIFF RICHARD - A World Of Difference
**DAVID BOWIE & MICK JAGGER - Dancing In The Streets (this is actually the music video; according to wikipedia Bowie and Jagger were supposed to do a live duet on the song, with Bowie in London and Jagger in Philadelphia, but because of technical difficulties it couldn't be done)
**DOCUMENTARY - Food And Trucks And Rock 'n' Roll

Instead of a scene selection menu, the dvds have "search by artist" that lets you go right to the start of that performer's set (which will then play the rest of the concert from that point on, rather than going back to the menu). You also have the option to just play the Wembley performances or the Philadelphia perfomances.

If you're too young to remember this concert, you might miss the significance of it. But it's still worth watching. Like Woodstock was to a generation before it, LIVE AID showed the world that young people could come together, through music, and collectively believe in something that could change the world. If you do remember this moment in time, watching this concert will bring back many memories.

Some of the stand out performances on these dvds, IMO:

FREDDIE MERCURY/QUEEN - The rapport between the audience and Mercury is incredible. He launches into an impromptu "scat" singing certain vowels to the audience and they sing it back to him, verbatim

ELTON JOHN & GEORGE MICHAEL - John playing the piano, while Michael belts out John's "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me"

PATTI LABELLE - The soul diva belting out her version of Lennon's "Imagine" and then going into "Forever Young." Towards the end of the latter song, she puts down the microphone, walking up to the front of the stage and continues singing...and you can still hear her voice, barely audible, but powerful enough to be heard over the cheering crowd and the back-up singers

TINA TURNER & MICK JAGGER - duet on "State Of Shock" Turner matches Jagger move for move and lip for lip

So even though this set is not complete, it still deserves 5-stars.

4 out of 5 stars Live Hair.......2007-05-14

I was not lucky enough to see the concert when it happened, but am glad to be able to now. The music is great, but it's fun to see the hair styles - mullet city! My daughter and I think Queen steals the show!

4 out of 5 stars First Live Aid.......2007-03-24

My family and I watched the first live aid on TV. We we're a bit shocked to see that Robert Page of Led Zeppelin was not included on the 4 disk set.

5 out of 5 stars So many recollections !.......2007-02-16

I was a teenager when the show was in the air and I could only record four hours on a VHS tape.

Now ten hours on DVD !

OK, it was originally a sixteen hours live but it's so good to watch this twenty years after. Madonna was a young singer, Freddy Mercury was there, etc...

So many recollections !

The late "Pistol" Pete Maravich made basketball history as the most spectacular college scorer ever, and he's still inspiring kids through this movie based on his first season of high school varsity basketball (which he played when he was in eighth grade). This 90-minute film explores the supportive father-son relationship that pushed him to the heights of achievement and fame (Dad was a former pro and Clemson University coach) and includes a story line on the stirrings of the quest for racial equality in the late 1950s. Newcomer Adam Guier plays some fine basketball in his role as the young Maravich. Viewers won't be able to track his no-look passes any better than opponents could when the real Maravich was dishing them out. In fact, the basketball sequences in general are superior to many seen in bigger-budget films. Shot on location in Louisiana, where Maravich grew up, the film captures the moral dilemmas of its time while still keeping a positive drive, making it an excellent film to watch with the kids. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Description

"Pistol" Pete Maravich had a dream - that he could achieve anything he put his heart and mind into. He wanted to become the greatest player anyone had ever seen. The Pistol is the true story of a legacy handed down from one generation to the next. Much more than a story about basketball, this is a story of a boy and his relationship with his father. It's a movie of the American Dream. 'Pistol' Pet Maravich (Adam Guier), a scrawny five-foot-two, 90 pound eighth-grader plays basketball with the innocence of a child and the determination of a champion. Pete inherited a dream from his father, Press Maravich (Nick Benedict) and he believed that if he committed himself completely to his dream, he would one day play professional basketball and win a championship ring. Including Academy Award nominee Millie Perkins as Pete's mother Helen, 'The Pistol' shares the story of an American sports legend. It teaches us the American Dream is alive and well to all those who believe in it. DVD features: "Maravich Memories" - Making of Documentary, Out-Takes & Bloopers, Pistol Pete's Sports Records Gallery, Pistol Pete Trivia, English & Spanish Language Tracks, Commentary by the Producers, High-Def Transfer, 16x9 Anamorphic Widescreen, Dolby Digital 5.1, DVD-9.

4 out of 5 stars The Pistol.......2007-05-19

Top film for all the family. Feel good movie which you can watch over & over. If your into sports movies this is one to get.You don't even have to be a basketball fan

5 out of 5 stars The Pistol has plenty of pop!.......2007-05-13

If you are a fan of basketball, you must know who "Pistol" Pete Maravich is and about his contribution to the game.

Now you can get a glimpse into the childhood story of how Maravich grew into one of the top 50 players in NBA history in this wonderful family movie.

The movie has plenty of basketball action and the young man playing the "Pistol", Adam Guier, shows off some amazing skills. This is a super film to watch if you are coaching young children. The story offers hope and inspiration, as well as some woonderful drills for your players to try.

This movie, rated G, is part of a dying breed-Great FAMILY entertainment for the ENTIRE family.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as what I remembered.......2007-05-10

I saw this movie when it FIRST came out on VHS and thought I liked it. I was impressed with the skills of the young Pistol, like when he was walking on the rail of the railroad tracks, dribbling the ball on the railroad ties.

In this viewing, I didn't have the same impression. The basketball footage is comical in how easy everything is portrayed. People don't play defense, Pistol gets wide open layups, etc. I could have beaten the teams they played, and I don't even play basketball.

Then there are the racist undertones, while Pistol isn't portrayed as the racist, his teammates/coach/community are, there is no condemnation of it either. It makes for a very uncomfortable viewing in 2007.

This movie is mildly entertaining, but the voice over narration is creepy and the story line takes far too long to get going.

5 out of 5 stars inspirational sports movie young and old can enjoy.......2007-03-09

This is a story about the great Pete Maravich and his eigth grade basketball season playing on the varsity high school team. I say a story because it probably is not a true biography. For instance, Pete's brother Ronnie played on the team and that is not mentioned in the movie. Ronnie had a hot and cold relationship with the family and was probably purposely left out of the movie. Also, I believe the relationship as portrayed between Pete's mother and father in the movie is probably a little too cozy as opposed to what reality was. Having said that, as a sports movie it is very uplifting. The actor that plays Pete does a great job of trying to showcase the skills that Pete was developing at the time that would eventually lead to him having a great basketball career. At different points in the movie we see Pete practice the dribbling and passing drills that helped him acquire the skills that were far superior to other players at the time. He would then put those skills to play during the games, and the actor in the movie must have practiced a lot because he does a good job in the game sequences. We also get a sense from the movie about the relationship Pete has with his dad. His dad basically raised him to become a professional basketball player. The movie depicts Press Maravich, Pete's dad, as hard driving, but somewhat tender. The performances of the other actors are very good as well. Particularly that of the coach of the high school team. He really does a great job of portraying the attitude of baskeball coaches back at this time which was: slow the game down and pass into the tall guy. Pete was devloping a game that would be based on the fast break which would include slick ball handling and passes meant to trick the opposition and also delight the crowd. Some of the lines the coach has during time outs of games are pretty funny. I read somewhere that they actually tried to get Ronald Reagan to play the part of the coach after he was President: This movie was made in the early 1990's. Made on a shoe string budget, this film shows that you don't need to have a ton of money to make a good movie.

Kevin Costner is the big name here, but the film belongs squarely to Elijah Wood, who plays his son. The film deals with the children of a Vietnam veteran in 1970 Mississippi; as their dad (Costner) tries to cope with posttraumatic stress disorder after serving in the war, the kids build a mammoth tree house in the woods--then must defend it against the local white-trash bullies. The film includes a particularly harrowing contest involving a swim across the reservoir of a decrepit water tower; still, director Jon Avnet can't avoid a certain "can't we all just get along" didactic message. That doesn't put a damper on the youthfully natural quality of the child actors, and Costner is actually quite winning as a sensitive, troubled soul. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars Wrongfully Accused.......2007-06-05

I read a lot of the other reviews and while a lot said good things about this film, some were also bad. One review said it should get an R rating because of the violence bewteen the kids, but childhood brawls, fights, failures and conquests are all about growing up. If we censor things for the children we don't prepare them for what to come. I think this movie has alot of important messages in it and I would suggest it for any parent to watch it with their kid. This was one of my favorite films when I was a kid, and although I didnt understand the post-traumatic stress disorder Kevin Costner was going through, I understood his angst and I had a better understanding of fights between children after I saw this movie. I did my share of neighborhood brawls when I was a kid and looking back now I dont even know of a reason. Its just something that we all go through. Parents shouldnt shun this away from their kids, after all it isn't Lord of the Flies. SPOILER* at the end of the movie it has a really important message when Elijah Wood's character risked his life to save one of the bullies, the message is that when in the face of death the minor fights between the kids were all forgotton in that instant- it didnt mean anything. It is also an important movie to show to kids for the vietnam aspect. How there was a war for the veterens of vietnam when they came home and soldiers have to deal with the guilt and whether they did the right thing or not- somewhat a good starting point for other movies like Born on the Forth of July and Jacob's Ladder. Other messages in this movie are racial ones, standing up for whats right, standing up for your friends, backing away from fights, and to treat anyone with dignity and respect no matter who they are. Also if you do watch this with your kid, prepare yourself, this like Fried Green Tomatoes is a sad movie. It deals with loss and hardships.
I hadn't watched this movie since I was a kid and I watched it again for the first time in 12 years. I have the same fondness I did since I was a kid and more so now because I can appreciate the wonderful soundtrack and score, with great songs by Janis Joplin, CCR, and Cat Stevens and one of the best places in a movie for Gimme Shelter. The score was beautiful and very inspirational from the very talented Thomas Newman. This was a wonderful movie that I would suggest to anyone- one that will always be close to my heart. And anyone who loved Friend Green Tomatoes and Forrest Gump will love this.

5 out of 5 stars Complete Tear Jerker!!!.......2007-05-24

I love this movie! To me, this is probably Costner's best performance. I cried from beginning to end. I definitely recommend this movie to anybody. My boyfriend even cried when he watched it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-01-17

Good movie with some important lessons in a world that gravitates more and more toward violence. It really makes you think about whats really important in life.

The best acting I have ever seen from Elijah Wood. Surpases LOtR in my opinion.

2 out of 5 stars R..... not PG.......2006-05-22

This movie is rated PG; yet I was not able to show this movie to my kids. I know that the world is full of aggression, however how can I sit with my family and watch a movie with so much violence between kids. Some will tell me that it is good to expose children to such violence and possibly reality of life and the human beings among each other. I totally disagree.
This movie should be rated R and not PG
2 stars, only because of the great acting; the story is basic, about a father feeling awful for leaving his best buddy behind during the Vietnam War while his kids are fighting other children over a tree hut. I know I am probably going to bombarded with bad feedbacks however this is my honest opinion about this movie.
(Have you ever noticed that when someone writes a review that doesn't give the artist 4 or 5 stars - the reviewer gets slammed in the votes?)

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Box Office Sleeper.......2006-03-24

This is one of my all time favorite movies, "lipstick and rouge" is now a favorite way to describe all the superficial elements of life. This is a meaning of life movie, packed full of values for every age group. Enjoy and Savor!

John Wayne and Robert Ryan co-star in Flying Leathernecks, Nicholas Ray's intense 1951 war movie that managed to appeal to RKO studio chief Howard Hughes's passion for thrilling aerial footage while supplying Ray's own fascination with the human psyche under near-inhuman duress. Wayne plays Major Dan Kirby, commander of a Marine Flying Corps squadron in the South Pacific of World War II. After witnessing the slaughter of men under his command at Midway, Kirby is battle-hardened and in no mood for the familiar style of his executive officer (Ryan). Emotions are further strained as Kirby's pilots are picked off one by one in grueling missions, leading to a crisis that ultimately forces each man to reevaluate his attitude toward sending men to their likely doom. The drama is built around extensive, startling documentary footage of battle action in the sky, but what makes Flying Leathernecks unique is its literate, psychologically probing script. --Tom Keogh

Description

It's World War II. Major Dan Kirby (John Wayne) is hard on his marines. His subordinate Captain Carl Griffin thinks the Major is overdoing it. But Kirby proves that there is a method to his madness after all.

3 out of 5 stars Flying Leathernecks.......2007-05-07

I love all of the Dukes movies. This is in my collection but it is not one of his best. If you are a John Wayne fan, buy it anyway.

5 out of 5 stars One of his better war films.......2007-02-25

John plays a hard-nosed squadron commander in this war film who isn't well recieved or looked upon by the members of the squadron. But, over time the reasons for his treatment of the fliers as well as why he tackles the problems and situations at hand come to be respected and understood by all. In the end, he becomes the hero and and the tactics and strataies of the squadron are successful and become the standard for all flying squadrons. A must see for John Wayne fans!

5 out of 5 stars Another John Wayne Classic.......2007-01-21

Flying Leathernecks is another action movie loosly based on the battle of Guadalcanal. This title is a good addition to my library!

3 out of 5 stars The air combats shots are impressive but..........2006-12-31

'Flying Leathernecks' illustrates the problems of leadership...

Major Dan Kirby (John Wayne) is commander of a Marine Corps fighting unit sent to Guadalcanal to give support to the ground troops... He is short of planes and pilots, and drives his men to the point of complete breakdown...

The executive officer, Griff (Robert Ryan) objects to Kirby's hard treatment of the men, but he lets his human feelings cloud his judgment... For a soldier that is bad... Kirby is recalled to the States to train pilots in his new low-level attack technique, and before leaving he informs Griff that he does not consider him fit to command... He hasn't yet got the guts to lead...

When they are reunited later, the hostility between them is intense... An emergency arises, and there is a scramble to get into the air to intercept a formation of Japanese bombers...

In the air, Griff's brother-in-law develops engine trouble, turns back and suddenly finds Japanese fighters on his tail... He radios for help... It is Griff's decision... Reluctantly, he commands his men to proceed... They are not to turn back...

Ray was a dynamic, socially conscious director with a keen visual sense and a gift for attaining fluid motion on the screen... He was more comfortable with the darker shadings of 'Rebel Without a Cause' and 'Johnny Guitar,' but he gets fine performances from his stars...

Wayne's strict discipline play well against Ryan's angry intensity, even if everyone in the audience understands that they're going to wind up on the same side by the end of the film...

The air combats shots are impressive but Ray never really puts the viewer in the airplane the way the best flying films do... Nothing here comes close to John Guillermin's 'The Blue Max', 1966 or even Howard Hughes' 'Hell's Angels', 1930.

4 out of 5 stars The Duke takes the burden of aerial command in WWII.......2006-10-05

John Wayne stars in this thoroughly entertaining film about Marine WWII pilots. The Duke takes command and drives his men hard to accomplish the mission of close air support - a very dangerous endeavor. While his XO does not agree with his methods, he does come to appreciate them later on.

Flying Leathernecks includes some excellent real combat footage from WWII, which adds a nice touch of authenticity. The characters and dialogue will engage the viewer, and really help keep the plot moving along.

If you like the movie Flying Tigers, or other WWII aviation films then you will enjoy this one. Or, if you simply like the Duke in military films, then this one is also worth viewing.

Jack is Francis Coppola at his most pointless noodling, looking for the film he wants to make instead of just making it. Robin Williams stars as 10-year-old Jack, a boy with an inexplicable disease that ages him at four times the normal human rate. Kept at home like a contemporary Boo Radley, Jack becomes a neighborhood legend until his parents relent and send him to school. In time, the other kids befriend him and stay loyal as his hyperdevelopment puts a strain on his body and emotions. The idea is sound, but the execution is a bore. The best the script and Coppola can come up with are painfully long scenes in which Williams's character proves himself on the playground and in gross-out contests in a tree house. Coppola fishes around for signs of life and spontaneity in these scenes, but the film is actually best when Jack has to cope with certain feelings in his mature body (such as his attraction to a character played by Fran Drescher) that he isn't prepared for emotionally. Jack would have been a lot better if Coppola had embraced a plan from beginning to end and stuck to it. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite movies!!.......2007-06-01

I remember watching this movie when I was younger (8, 9, 10 years old) and laughing so hard. Robin Williams is hilarious in this movie!

So what's this movie about? Jack is a 10 year old boy that was born with a disease that caused his body to age 4 times faster than normal. Yet, his brain stays the same. In essence, Jack is a typical 10 year old boy in a not so typical 40 year old body. Jack's parents try to keep him away from school and other kids because they fear that the teasing will be too much for him. When Jack begs his parents to go and they finally end up letting him, he unfortunately sees that the other kids don't like kids who look different. Eventually, the kids see that although Jack LOOKS different, he still is a 10 year old kid at heart.

Although I wouldn't recommend this movie for younger kids, older kids and adults should LOVE this movie. Not only does it teach a thing or two, it also is a really entertaining movie that will make you laugh and cry; two elements that truly make the perfect movie.

4 out of 5 stars Jack! Jack! Jack! Jack!.......2007-01-10

I find this to be one of the finest Robin Williams dramatic/comedic performance. I enjoyed it immensely. Robin Williams portrays Jack Powell, a boy who suffers from a disease that ages him 4 times faster than normal. Just image a 10 year old boy with the body of a 40year old & with the comedy of Robin Williams! School is really a hassle!

5 out of 5 stars Jack is great.......2006-12-12

Jack is the kind of movie that will make you remember how much fun it was to be a child, and interestingly enough, it will also remind you how difficult it was to fit in and become friends with the other children. Robin Williams plays an excellent role in this film. His character is totally believable. Just imagine what would happen if a 40-year old man tried going back to school with children? The way the children responded to it would probably be the same response if such an incident were to happen in real life. You will love this movie, especially if you're an adult who loves movies that are both funny and contain good drama.

5 out of 5 stars It teaches the value of time and small things in life .......2006-07-03

One of the best William's movies,it'll make you cry, laugh, and think about how lucky you are of being normal and healthy and how valuable are love and time in the life of some people.
Excellent movie to be seen in family or alone (if you are ashamed of crying in front of other people)I loved this movie

5 out of 5 stars The life maybe even shorter!.......2006-05-06

Fascinating portrait about a man whose biological rhythm presents an unusual contrast .

Robin Williams in one his finest performances, makes a sensible performance about who enjoys every day of his life with major intensity than most of us. His terrible illness will avoid the necessary and required time to experience and enjoy every stage of the human life.

This is the most touching film of Coppola.

3 out of 5 stars Interestingly gory.......2007-07-05

It was nice to see Ellie Cornell again, even if she was a minor character as a nurse. It was odd though, to see her in the same hairstyle that she had in Halloween 4.

It is alot like Near Dark. I really don't feel any new territory is covered here, but it is mildly entertaining and pretty well done for a b-movie.

Blood sprays everywhere which does make you wonder just how much they actually consume...which couldn't be much.

Not a classic...but interesting for 1 viewing.

3 out of 5 stars The first 87 minutes is 2 stars & the last minute earns 1 more.......2007-06-03

Whew. Where to start? I rented this for one reason only. I like Clare Kramer, and true to form, was not disapointed as she again gives a good performance. The film however is sex and gore and gore and sex. Yes I know it's rated 'R' and what was I suppose to expect? Okay, I can live with the topless pair of vampire girls who garble out some kind of speech as they run around seemingly aimlessly just causing mayhem and the gore, though excessive really didn't seem out of place considering the setting. Within all this depravity enters Lisa (Clare Kramer) who becomes the vampire with the heart of gold. Even though it's not beating, it's still a heart of gold. The depiction of vampirism as a drug type addiction was pretty cool and the spectacle of a couple vampires trying to kick the habit was my second favorite part of the film. My favorite part was the ending. After all the sex, after all the gore and the chase and the slaughter, this film ends with a tender finale that renews one's faith in the goodness of mankind. Awwww, wasn't that just so sweet? I don't think I would watch this again, but it was worth a one time viewing. Bottom line: If you're thinking about buying it, rent it first. You might love it. Then again you might just change your mind about buying it. By the way, it says that Ellie Cornell is in the cast. I love Ellie Cornell too, but I didn't see her. If I did I didn't recognize her. Oh well.

2 out of 5 stars Blood Addiction........2007-05-27

Oh Lord..
I love Vampire movies, and this kinda delivers. more like near dark though and that was just ok admittedly far superior acting to this train wreck of a film. but the Idea of a pair of drug addicts becoming vampires, and then becoming addicted (following addictive behavior patterns) to Blood! its just sad that the execution of such a great idea was so poor. and I truly love vampire films, even most of the B style vamp flicks but this? My Personal Recommendation is: if you Must see this film RENT ONLY 2 star and thats being generous because of the blood addiction idea. and some funny gore (gore being funny here is bad trust me) Avoid...

2 out of 5 stars Not the worst.......2007-05-24

The cover jacket says that this is a cross between Near Dark and Requiem for a Dream. This is fairly accurate because the vampires here act like blood is the drug and they're all adicts.

The filming of this is disjointed, such as when they all go into a strip-bar to feed. They tear apart all the people there, dancers and patrons. But the camera jumps quickly from one to the other. None of the vampires have fangs, seemingly wishing to tear at the flesh of their vicitms. One even keeps running everyone through with a cane-sword.

The vampires are almost showered in blood. Such a mess is an obvious problem if they want to stay out of the sights of vampire hunters/police, so their solution, leave clues like they're Muslim extremists or a Satanic cult!!! And the guy doing this - Adam Baldwin, speaks with a Texan drawl, but he's supposed to be Palestinian!!! He sits there in his cowboy hat going through the Koran trying to find verses to leave around the crime site.

This makes it just stupid. A hot duo of dark haired vampires seem to spend a lot of time topless and speaking in an intelligible grunting way that makes no sense.

Serena Scott Thomas wants to convert Clare Kramer who's in hospital dying of cancer. She hops onto Clare's bed, drooling something that might be blood, and bites into her in a sudden montage of imagery that's not erotic, but certainly confusing.

After acting in literary adaptations like Christine, Keith Gordon returned to the well for his directorial debut. His smart and stylish adaptation of Robert Cormier's controversial youth novel marks him as a natural. Based in a frequently overcast Pacific Northwest, Jerry Renault (Ilan Mitchell-Smith, Weird Science) enters a Catholic boys' school in the wake of his mother's passing. The freshman already has enough worries, but then Brother Leon (a ferocious John Glover) instructs each student to sell 50 boxes of chocolates during Trinity's annual fundraiser. Jerry refuses. Leon is taken aback, but then he finds that Jerry's refusal--his assignment--was handed down by Machiavellian upperclassman Archie (CSI's Wallace Langham, then known as Wally Ward), head of the Vigils. The secret society also instructs Jerry to recant, but he sticks to his guns. At first, a few kids congratulate him on his stand, but then Leon and Archie, threatened by the iconoclast, turn the school against him. The climactic showdown between Jerry and Archie deviates from the book, but retains its cynical spirit. As Gordon explains in his DVD interview, "They both threaten the system, and in the end, the system is a much bigger problem than any one individual." Like his mentor Brian DePalma, Gordon aims more for emotional than visual truth, which translates into dramatic lighting and fantasy sequences (which are, at first, more confusing than illuminating), but the performances remain grounded in reality. Interestingly, Mitchell-Smith, who never overplays his hand, abandoned acting in the 1990s--for teaching. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars You don't forget a movie like this...........2005-05-02

I remember watching this movie my senior year of high school, this is how it is in schools but taken to the darkest of forms. Blackmail and Terror what happens when students are given freedom, and what happens when they get too much freedom. The ending in the movie and the ending of the book are entirely different. This movie is an amazing film and this is Keith Gordon's first directoral debut. The movie is very accurate to how the book is for the most part even down to the kids kicking the crap out of the main character. It is a shocking movie and the book is just as shocking. I went to a public high school, but not sure of all the horror stories told of private schools. This movie gives someone a glimpse into it. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars "The Movie".......2004-12-11

"The Chocolate War", in this movie the title doesn't really give you a clue until after you see it unlike in most movies where as the title does give a clue to what it's going to be about. This movie is good for two main reasons; it reminds us of exactly how mean people can be and of how people take advantage of others. I'm sure you can think of at least one person that you can relate to Archie or Brother Leon. Everyday we come across people with characteristics like those of Brother Leon and Archie whose, sole purpose is to control and destroy.
The vigils are like an "Old School" gang. It's all about respect and if they don't respect you then they won't take you seriously and if they don't take you seriously then they won't obey you, and that's when the trouble starts. So, yea it's all about respect!
See, Brother Leon's whole plan was to sell more chocolates than usual to impress the board, but it became so much more. I guess you could say it kind of turned into a drug pushing operation except the drugs were the chocolates!

4 out of 5 stars life in highschool .......2004-12-10

The chocolate war shows how when one group of people try to control students through terror and blackmail they can end up controling the school as the teachers and other school workers start to turn their heads and how others get injuried by how they are given the freedom.

5 out of 5 stars The Real High School Story.......2004-12-05

The Chocolate War is one of the books that explains the difficulties and hard decisions that the high school students have to make. This book shows the different kind of persons that exist in a school. Their different roles, feelings, and way to see life.

By reading this book you can learn about the experiences of many students at Trinity High School, their challenges and wishes to become someone important in their world, someone important at Trinity.
This story tells about a boy named Jerry Renault who the main character of the book. He is only a freshmen that seems to have a very weak personality, but the desire to become a better person, and liberate himself of those chains that are holding him from becoming the person that he wants to be.

He is passing through a very hard time in his life because of the dead of his mother, and the change that he imposed himself to make. Jerry is a boy that is used to do not have an identity. He is one of the persons who never tries to challenge himself, his life was as anyone tells him to be and he always accepts it without doing or saying anything to make it better.
And, this is the kind of personality that almost everyone in this school has. Every student at trinity High School was used to do anything that the Vigils say. The Vigils is a group of the most feared boy s in the school, this group is the union of the popular, strong, and yes maybe smart guy in the school.

The Vigil is the group that everyone respects, fears, and obeys. Their assignments is like a legend in the school ,and everybody knows that nobody has had the courage to disobey the assignment. But, Jerry is going to be the first one that decides that he is going to follow their game rulers. For the first time in his life, he wants to make the right or wrong choice, but his choice not the one that anyone tells him.

That is how he refuses to sell the chocolates for the school fundraising . When the Vigils know this they think that Jerry is trying to make a rebellion against their group to show everybody that even a little freshmen can dare them. The Vigils try to make Jerry's life a hell to force him to accept the chocolates, but what they don't realize is that this time is not going back, and he will do anything to reach his goal and maybe be an example for those persons who think that they should follow the road that was traced without trying to traced their road for themselves.

Evil has a beautiful face.

A deeply disturbing true story

"The Ken and Barbie Killers"

Winter - 1990. The most notorious serial killers in the history of Canada begin their psychological dance with death and depravity as an entire country is held captive in fear.

In stunningly acclaimed performances, Laura Prepon ("That 70's Show", "Slackers", "Come Early Morning") and Misha Collins (TV's "24", "NCSI") breathe perverse life into their real life counterparts, Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka, dubbed by an anxious press the "Ken and Barbie Killers". As the gruesome events unfold, and lovely young girls disappear, the utter lack of remorse from Paul coupled with his quirky charisma paint a delusional world of normalcy for Karla.

Police frantically search for and eventually put an end to the couple's horrific killing spree and their trial captivates the entire nation, setting off waves of controversy surrounding the brutal killings.

In the end, this gripping, tension-packed film will haunt you forever left to ponder the psyches of two individuals in a tragically demented relationship...because it's true.

4 out of 5 stars Close To Home Killing.......2007-05-30

I remember when the killings happened only 3 hrs away from my hometown. All of my father's family is from St Catherines and many of my family knew of or had met the victims. My grandmother actually went to church were one of the girls was abducted from. This case really hit home. I read one of the books that told the story of Karla and Paul and when I found out there was going to be a movie I was very interested in seeing it. I felt like by reading the book and watching the movie that I was keeping the victims memories alive not glorifying these sick people for the crimes they committed. This movie was only viewed in very few movie theatres in Canada, none in which were close to my home so I was unable to see the movie while in theatres. When the movie then became available on DVD again there was nowhere near to rent or buy it. I purchased this movie without ever seeing it but with a case that I had followed for such a long time I had the need to see it. This movie kept close to the facts that were released to the public through the media and the books available. The movie was very powerful, very graphic and very hard to believe to be true. It's so hard to believe that someone could do such horrible things to such innocent victims. I highly recommend this film but only to viewers that realize what this film in tales. The actors/actresses in this film did a wonderful job and I can only imagine how hard it was for them to be in these roles. To the families of the victims their memory is still alive. I hope that others who watch this film watch it for the same reasons as me not to glorify but to remember.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as I had hoped it would be.......2007-04-26

"Karla" is a small, fairly low-budget film that rather quietly recounts the story of Karla Homolka, wife of serial rapist and murderer Paul Bernardo. Being somewhat familiar with their story, I anticipated it would translate well to film. For the most part, the film succeeds in providing a realistic portrayal of a battered wife, whose husband managed to maintain a semblance of normalcy and elude capture for a few years. The tone of the film is fairly understated, which seems to contrast somewhat with the story. These were some horrific, disturbing events that might be shocking, though they were also true. Director Joel Bender deserves credit for not making them overly dramatic by adding stylized violence or ominous music, as so often happens in films that deal with this type of material. The actors also deserve credit for not overacting and hamming up their performances, which often occurs in horror and suspense films. Perhaps out of respect for the families of the victims, this film is not exploitive or sensationalized. If one watches this film expecting a prurient, American-style horror film, replete with blood, gore and gratuitous nudity, one will find the experience disappointing. I was, nonetheless, a little disappointed with the film, though not for the above reasons. It is pretty clear that Karla Homolka was abused by Paul Bernardo and that he perpetrated some atrocious, unconscionable acts. I cannot comprehend why abused women stay with their men, though I know it does happen. Karla Homolka was (and perhaps still is) a deceitful, manipulative individual, who knew her husband was raping and murdering young women; yet, she did nothing about it until her own life came into jeopardy. Even though she decided to stay, that doesn't provide rationale for condoning his raping and murdering these women. The end of the film contains an epilogue, which refutes much of what was portrayed in the film. It states in part that she has expressed no sympathy for the murdered girls, yet she is portrayed in the film as being at least moderately sympathetic toward them. She also did not appear to be too emotionally hurt by her abuse, as though the filmmakers could not decide what to make of her and consequently decided to write the character without much of a personality. It seems her character is based solely on a credulous, verbatim reading of interviews with her so that she comes across as stoic, detached and passive. Perhaps in reality she is emotionless and inured to her environment, though here she is presented so innocuously that it makes me wonder how "Evil has a beautiful face" was chosen as the tagline. Her character provides the impetus for the story since it is told from her perspective, which makes her lack of definition rather unfortunate for this film. Character issues aside, the film has too many slow-motion scenes, which gives it a little made-for-TV feel. Although no subtitles are included, the DVD does have several deleted scenes that are presented by the director. After hearing his extremely dry, insipid introductions, I understood how Karla's character came to be so underdeveloped. Contrast this film with "Monster" for a good example of how a person's motivations and experiences can be parlayed into an interesting, yet insidious character. For a different perspective of these characters, read the books "Invisible Darkness" or "Deadly Innocence."

5 out of 5 stars impressive.......2007-04-25

I had never heard of this movie when I decided to rent it for a night. I was pleasantly surprised, this movie both scared me and kept me on the edge of my seat. While it is a very indie flick, it was very engrossing and hit close to home. I loved it, and would reccommend it to law and order svu lovers and anyone into thrillers.

4 out of 5 stars Disturbing.......2007-04-08

This was a very disturbing, yet, very engrossing movie. Real life crime stories intrique me and this was no exception. I thought the two main leads, Collins and Prepon were exceptionally good and it's a role certainly against type for Prepon. Perhaps there is too much sympathy for Karla in the movie, however, if some of the deleted scenes had been included, it may not have been the case in the finished product. This movie could have been explotive if the sex and rape scenes were more brutal, but, I commend all involved for leaving more to the immaginiation than the eyes. It's a movie you really want to follow almost word for word, frame by frame, as to not miss something that might give you a reason to understand the callousness and the brutality of the two principals in the case. I highly recommend this movie, but, it is disturbing, especially knowing it is based on a true story. Well done, well crafted, and well worth seeing.
