Considered by many to represent a low point in Steven Spielberg's career, 1990's Always did suggest something of a temporary drift in the director's sensibility. A remake of the classic Spencer Tracy film A Guy Named Joe, Always stars Richard Dreyfuss as a Forest Service pilot who takes great risks with his own life to douse wildfires from a plane. After promising his frightened fiancée (Holly Hunter) to keep his feet on the ground and go into teaching, Dreyfuss's character is killed during one last flight. But his spirit wanders restlessly, hopelessly attached to and possessive of Hunter, who can't see or hear him. Then the real conflict begins: a trainee pilot (Brad Johnson), a likable doofus, begins wooing a not-unappreciative Hunter--and it becomes Dreyfuss's heavenly mandate to accept, and even assist in, their budding romance. The trouble with the film is a certain airlessness, a hyper-inventiveness in every scene and sequence that screams of Spielberg's self-education in Hollywood classicism. Unlike the masters he is constantly quoting and emulating in Always, he forgets to back off and let the movie breathe on its own sometimes, which would better serve his clockwork orchestration of suspense and comedy elsewhere. Still, there are lovely passages in this film, such as the unforgettable look on Dreyfuss's face a half-second before fate claims him. John Goodman contributes good supporting work, and Audrey Hepburn makes her final screen appearance as an angel. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic score... wish they left the oldies stuff off.......2007-03-20

I would have preferred more of the etherial Williams music and less of the oldies and country stuff. It's a very good score... very sedate stuff for the most part (and hushed, too... you have to crank the music to hear some of Williams' music)

5 out of 5 stars Easily the funniest show on television........2007-06-19

This comedy series definately isn't for everybody. It's a completely different species than "Two and a Half Men" or "War At Home". This is a thinkers comedy series in that the jokes come fast so you really have to pay attention, but the reward is gut-busting laughs. The charactures are very well defined, as well as the group dynamic (the "gang") so you are immediately sucked in. They have spent a lot of time writing for Season 3, so buy this set and gear up for a new quality season!

5 out of 5 stars Seinfeld + Arrested Development + South Park = Sunny.......2007-06-16

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is seriously one of the most hilarious shows on television today. Imagine this: the friends with time to spare from Seinfeld, the witty dialogue and plot pacing of Arrested Development, and some of the most offensive stuff around (perhaps second only to South Park), and you get this show.

Buy it now (or when it comes out), you won't regret it.

Even under the heavy censorship of 1946 Hollywood, Lana Turner and John Garfield's libidinous desires burn up the screen in Tay Garnett's adaptation of James M. Cain's torrid crime melodrama. Platinum blond Turner is Cora, a restless sexpot stuck in a roadside diner married to mundane middle-aged fry cook Nick Smith (Cecil Kellaway) when handsome drifter Frank (Garfield) blows her way. It's lust at first sight, a rapacious desire that neither can break off, and before long they're plotting his demise--but in the wicked world of Cain nothing is that easy. Garnett's visual approach is subdued compared to the more expressionistic film noir of the period, but he's at no loss when he films the luminous Turner in her milky-white wardrobe. She radiates repressed sexuality and uncontrollable passion while Garfield's smart-talking loner Frank mixes street-smart swagger and scrappy toughness with vulnerability and sincere intensity. Costar Hume Cronyn cuts a cold, calculating figure as their conniving lawyer, a chilly character that only increases our feelings for the murderous couple, victims of an all consuming amour fou that drives their passions to extremes. --Sean Axmaker

Description

Adapted from James M. Cain's story, the film relolves around the destructive relationship of two lovers whose troubles mount after they do away with her husband.

5 out of 5 stars The Postman Always Rings Twice.......2007-06-25

Tay Garnett's sizzling "Postman," adapted from the pulp novel by James M. Cain, concerns fate, temptation, and the kind of irrational urges that drive people to murder. A gorgeous Lana Turner bewitches as the femme fatale, and enigmatic, underrated actor John Garfield plays the regular Joe who falls into her clutches. Garnett's direction is solid and tantalizingly suggestive, as when Frank spots a lipstick rolling across the floor moments before he lays eyes on Cora. Garnett's "Postman" delivers the goods.

5 out of 5 stars a very sexy example of the film noir genre, at its best............2007-05-20

Cora (Lana Turner) is a very beautiful and frustrated woman, married to middle aged fry cook, Nick (Cecil Kellaway), residing with him in a small town that seems way too small for her tastes. Enter Frank (John Garfield), a handsome loner, who arrives at their door, one day. Cora and Frank are instantly drawn to each other, of course. The problem that stands in their way is her husband. What a pesky problem! Together, the two plot to murder Nick, so they can be together. Of course, this does not go according to plan.

This grizzly, sexually charged story said so much with so little (back at a time when even depicting "so little" granted you a firm rap on the knuckles from the MPAA censorship board). Lana Turner glows in a series of white ensembles that she clearly fills out quite pleasingly. What's more, no one ever made lipstick look so sexy before. In fact, Lana Turner's character made lipstick even more popular, after this film came out! Just a little trivia. The acting is wonderful, the plot is engrossing and there is a delicious feeling of dark forboding from this film, one of the best example of sexy film noir (literally, "black film") stories ever! This puts the murder mysteries of today to shame.

4 out of 5 stars Tale of Obsession.......2007-04-19

*** This comment may contain spoilers ***

James Cain's tale of lust, murder, and retribution has attracted the filmmakers in different countries in different times. It's been adapted in France in 1939 by Pierre Chenal as "Le Dernier tournant" aka "The Last Turn" with great Michel Simon as a husband who was an obstacle for his young wife's and her lover's happiness. Luchino Visconti told the story in his "Ossessione" (1943) aka Obsession (how appropriate). The novel was also adapted in 1998 by the Hungarian director György Fehér in the movie Szenvedély (1998)aka "Passion". Hollywood has made two films based on Cain's novel of passionate obsession; both are titled "The Postman Always Rings Twice" - in 1946 by Tay Garnett with Lana Turner in her star making role as Cora Smith and John Garfield as Frank Chambers, a drifter who looked for a job but found something completely different and in 1981 by Bob Rafelson with Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange. I've seen later movie many years ago and all I remember well is the very hot scene between Nicholson and Lange. The earlier film that I saw few weeks ago for the first tine is different. Turner and Garfield are sizzling and although there is no single sex scene between them, the movie is genuinely sexy and perfect in creating the atmosphere of obsession and desperate desire to change the lives no matter what the price would be.

5 out of 5 stars One ofthe best of its kind.......2007-02-25

This is one of the best film noir that was evr made. The plot is captivating, the atmosphere unique and you can feel the sensuality and tension that Lan turner and John Garfield give out. The story is very well known- a hitchaker that stops at a restasurant, falls in love with the owner's wife and they plot to kill him. Extremely well acted and with an also excellent directing and photography this is a must.
Enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars in the time of film noir.......2007-02-25

I admit to being a film noir fan of long standing. Maybe it was the fact of growing up in the time of black and white television and watching all those late night movies which were freely available at the time. Maybe it was that tight, if improbable, dialogue, the relatively simple plots and the dramatic effect of the shadows of black and white photography on mood. In any case, the Postman Always Rings Twice fits nicely into that mix. The plot line is fairly simple- unhappy California housewife, older uncaring husband and a younger man at the door who turns out to be handy with a wretch- all the ingredients for a murder. Hey, isn't this the plot for Double Indemnity. Oh well, you get the point. Of course, as always the guilty parties will have to face justice. You know this is a modern morality play, after all. In any case one should like Double Indemnity by the same author, James M. Cain, read the book to get a better feel for the language, the steamier sexual tension and better insight into the motivations of the parties. This movie was remade in color in the 1980's and is probably truer to Cain's wicked designs but this is the definitive Postman.

In The Postman Always Rings Twice Jack Nicholson teamed up again with his Five Easy Pieces and King of Marvin Gardens director Bob Rafelson for this 1981 version of James M. Cain's hardboiled novel of lust and murder. This version takes a much grittier (and sexually explicit) approach to the material than the slick 1946 MGM version starring John Garfield and Lana Turner. Nicholson plays Frank Chambers, a drifter who happens upon a roadside diner run by Cora Papadakis (Jessica Lange) and her swarthy Greek husband, Nick (John Colicos). Sparks fly, and before you can say l'amour fou, Frank and Cora are making the beast with two backs on the kitchen table. One thing leads to another and they conspire to murder Nick. The movie is still a little too cold and distant to fully convey a hot-blooded passion that leads to murder, but it is a strangely haunting and disturbing film nevertheless. The screenplay is by David Mamet, the photography is by the great Sven Nykvist (Ingmar Bergman's cinematographer), and watch for Anjelica Huston in a supporting role. --Jim Emerson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Underrated; Haven't Seen the Original Though.......2006-09-17

Director Bob Rafelson reunited with his "Five Easy Pieces" star Jack Nicholson on this film, which also stars Jessica Lange, Anjelica Huston, and briefly Christopher Lloyd (also reunited with Nicholson from "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"). When Rafelson set out to make this film (which had already been adapted from the novel into a 1946 film starring Lana Turner), he wanted to take a detour from the original. In 1946, you weren't really allowed to show sex so the film had destroyed the whole vision of the novel. So, Rafelson has been adamant about not calling this a remake. I've never seen the original or read the book, so this is my first exposure to the material. Having said that, there's something about this film that's kind of funny...There is no postman. When we meet drifter Frank Chambers (Nicholson), he just scammed a restuarant owner named Nick (John Colicos) out of a free meal. About to leave, Nick offers him a job and Frank accepts. Problem is, Frank can't contain his feelings for Nick's wife Cora (the beautiful Jessica Lange). After Nick and Cora begin having an affair, Cora tells Nick that the only way they continue is if Nick is killed. After a failed attempt, they cool off for awhile...But eventually realize that it's something that must be done. The first hour of the film is spectacular, it sags a little in the second hour (causing me to almost give it 4 stars). But the performances are so good and the ending is so beautifully done (some complain it's abrupt, but it works to suit Nicholson's character). I don't know how this film is compared to the book and movie that inspired it, but it's a great movie. For people just looking for nudity, this isn't your movie. The sex scenes are pretty graphic, but the only nudity is Anjelica Huston side-boob.

4 out of 5 stars Steamy and deffinately not for the faint hearted.......2006-07-03

Quite a different interpretantion in comparison with the version with Lana Turner. This is deffinately for people who are not conservative when it comes to sex, hate, disloyalty, etc. The performances are excellent. Jack Nicholson has always been my favourite actor and here he is his old evil self. Jessica Lange is very sensual and acts her part well. A very satisfying film when it comes to substance and something more than just sensation. Highly recommended for the serious movie fan.

2 out of 5 stars PAN & SCAN MARGINALIZES THE PRESENTATION.......2006-02-26

Unfortunately, the image is cropped to full screen. Ironically, the trailer included on the disc is in 16X9!

4 out of 5 stars A movie about fate and lust..........2006-02-01

Jessica Lange and Jack Nicholson star in a very dark tale of two lovers who sought freedom from their grim, quietly desperate lives in each other's arms. Unfortunately, their quest to remain together leads to the destruction of several lives, and quite possibly their own. The movie is primarily set in a rural area, where Lange's character works at a small roadside diner owned by her husband, a Greek immigrant. One of the most important elements of the film is that it never really demonizes the antagonists, and this is true with respect to the husband character - he has his faults, but he doesnt appear to be overly domineering or abusive. In any event, as fate would have it, one day a drifter appears at the diner, Nicholson's character, and soon he and Lange are making love on her kitchen work table, in one of several extremely graphic sex scenes which are peppered throughout the movie. Now, only Lange's husband stands in the way, and Nicholson and Lange decide to get rid of him. The rest of the movie depicts their attempts on the husband's life and the consequences of their actions, without judgment from the filmmakers, as the story moves to its ultimate, and ultimately shocking, conclusion.

The movie does drag at points, and some of the characters seem unnecessary, but the point is never lost on the audience - both fate and lust, while they draw two people together magnetically, can spell disaster.

3 out of 5 stars GOING POSTAL.......2006-01-21

Director Bob Rafelson reportedly wanted to do this remake of the 1946 classic (in 1981) because he wanted to present a steamier, sexier version. Casting Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange in the leading roles, Rafelson indeed upped the thermometer in this tale of lust and murder. He plays a drifter who cons his way into a job at a remote tavern, where he finds himself attracted to the older owner's lusty young wife, Cora. Of course, once they become attached, Cora wants hubby Nick (the late John Colicos) out of the way permanently and so they conspire to kill him---twice, when the first attempt fails.
I had a hard time feeling any empathy with either Nicholson or Lange. Colicos seems to be an allright husband, and since there's no background as to why Cora married him, it's hard to understand why she chooses murder instead of just leaving him. He's not an abusive husband; he seems affectionate, and although they aren't wealthy, they seem to have a good life. So when the murder occurs, most sympathy goes to Colicos.
Nicholson and Lange are top notch as always, but their inevitable tragic end seems more deserving than tragic. Not a great movie, but well done nonetheless.

A collection of vignettes, loosely based on the book by Dr. David Rueben, written and directed by Woody Allen, Everything contains some very funny moments. It's easy to forget that the cerebral Allen excelled at the type of broad, Catskill, dirty jokes and visual gags that run amok here. It's also remarkable how dirty this 1972 movie really was--bestiality, exposure, perversion, and S&M get their moments to shine. The Woody Allen here, who appears in many of the sketches, is a portent of the seedy old Allen of Deconstructing Harry. Although the final bit, which takes place inside a man's body during a very hot date, is hilarious, most of Everything feels like the screen adaptation of a '70s bathroom joke book. Still, a must for Allen fans. --Keith Simanton

Description

Woody Allen pushes the frontiers of comedy by consolidating his madcap sensibility and wickedly funny irreverence with his developing penchant for visually arresting humor. Giving complete indulgenceto the zany eccentricity of his medium, Allen reveals himself as a filmmaker of "wit, sophistication, and comic insight" (Cue). Allen rises to the occasion with several hysterical vignettes that probe sexuality's stickiest issues! Aphrodisiacs prove effective for a court jester (Allen) who finds the key to the Queen's (Lynn Redgrave) heartbut learns that the key to her chastitybelt might be more useful. Unnatural acts get wild and wooly when a good doctor (Gene Wilder) fallsfor a fickle sheep. Jack Barry gives fetishism 20 questions on a wacky TV show called "What's My Perversion?" Sex-research goes under the microscope when a mad scientist (John Carradine) unleashes a monstrous, marauding breast. And the absurdity comes to a frenzied climax with Tony Randall, Burt Reynolds and Allen as sperm having second thoughts about ejaculation!

5 out of 5 stars One of Woody Allen's Funniest Films..........2006-12-28

Before "Annie Hall," Woody Allen's comedy was very different. Rather than the mature quips that any Woody Allen fan is used to post-Annie Hall, most of the movies made before that are wacky, hilarious, and out-there bits that show (nowadays) Woody Allen's comedic range. "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex*But Were Afraid to Ask" is a series of vignettes with Allen "answering" (supposedly) real questions. Usually in an unconventional, yet hilarious, way. Here is a brief synopsis of each:

1. Do Aphrodisiacs Work-Starring Allen and Lynn Redgrave, this story takes place near the Renaissance Period. Allen plays The Fool, the king's comedian who fails to impress anybody with his humor. The reason for this is, likely, because The Fool is written as a modern man placed in ancient times. Desperately wanting to have relations with The Queen (Redgrave), he gets a potion from a sorcerer before meeting his untimely end.

2. What is Sodomy-Gene Wilder plays a doctor who is shocked to learn that an Armenian shepherd has had sex with one of his sheep. When the man brings the sheep in, the doctor finds himself falling in love and conducting an affair with a sheep. Sounds morbid, but is just used as a (slightly insane) metaphor.

3. Why Do Some Women Have Trouble Reaching an Orgasm-This vignette is in Italian (I think) and stars Allen as a Marcello Mastroianni-like Italian man who has recently married. Problem is, he can't give his wife an orgasm...Except in a public place.

4. Are Transvestites Gay-In this one, a man goes to his daughter's fiancées parents house for dinner with his wife. Once there, he goes to the bathroom but finds himself in the room of the parents trying on the mothers clothing. Everything is fine, until he is forced to flee out a window and finds his purse snatched outside.

5. What Are Sex Perverts-In black & white, this vignette is about a gameshow in which people come on and reveal their perversions. Watch for a young Regis Philbin (looking very different, but with the same unmistakable voice) as himself.

6. Are the Findings of Doctors, Who Do Sexual Research, Accurate-This stars Allen as a man traveling to see a world-famous sexual research doctor. Picking up a pretty blonde reporter along the way, he finds the man to be insane and attempting to use them for his experiments. Pretty soon, a giant killer breast is on the loose.

7. What Happens During Ejaculation-This stars Burt Reynolds and Woody Allen as some workers in a man's body, controlling what he does. Allen plays a sperm that is scared about being "sent out" into the world.

The film contains lots of metaphors, lots of double-entendres, and lots of hilarity. Despite it's subject matter, it's not graphic. There's no nudity or anything. The movie has a large cast and is easily one of the funniest films Woody Allen has ever done. Every vignette is good and none of them overstay their welcome (the film is only 88 minutes). The movie is so different from other Woody Allen material that it's possible that people who DON'T like Woody Allen might enjoy this movie. It's one of his finest.

3 out of 5 stars Singular Hiccup in an Otherwise Great Series of Comedies.......2006-07-03

From 1969's Take the Money & Run to well into the 80's, Allen created a series of comedies that established him as one of the preeminant writer/director/actor one-man-bands in the history of moviemaking. An argument can be made that Allen didn't really run out of gas until the mid nineties and the Soon-Yi & Mia Farrow public relations debacle trashed his image forever. The danger of filming a series of skits is, inevitably, some skits are going to be stronger than others. Thus, EYAWKASBWAA is a mixed bag with generally blah results. Allen starts the movie in fool's motley and ends dressed as a sperm. In between is some really funny stuff and some really tedious stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Silly Allen is good Allen.......2006-04-17

`Everything You Always To Know About Sex' is probably the last time Woody Allen really fooled about and made an ass of himself with minimal artistic pretences, and given the mediocre quality of recent disposable duds like `Melinda & Melinda' and `Anything Else', it's quite refreshing. True, this 1972 collection of extremely lewd skits isn't quite as impressive and thought-provoking as some of Allen's best works, like `Annie Hall', `Manhattan' or for that matter even the follow-up `Sleeper'; yet there's an energy to `Everything You Always Wanted To Know' that Allen has not shown for at least a decade, and in that light it's still entirely classic.

If anything, the film is closest in its spirit to early Allen films like `Bananas' and `Sleeper', but it actually feels more like a British comedy, and is clearly influenced by shows like `Monty Python's Flying Circus' and `The Benny Hill Show', in it's chaotic and rude humor. Still, Allen's mark is all over the skits, even when he isn't in them. One of the best of the bunch, in fact, is the skit titled `What Is Sodomy', which stars Gene Wilder. Influences of both Monty Python and Mel Brooks can be felt in it, but it's entirely Allen; and still, it's Wilder that makes it perfect. Even more Pythonish is the fabricated game-show `What's Your Perversion'.

The best and most memorable is the last skit, entitled `What Happens During Ejaculation', in which Allen does a wonderful portrayal of a sperm, and we catch a glimpse of the action in the control room of a man's body during sexual intercourse. The skit is brilliantly satirical and ranks with Allen's best moments, nearly overshadowing the rest of the film. Still, it's not without it's unforgettable moments; other than Wilder, also worthy of special praise is John Carradine who is wonderful as the ultimate parody of a mad scientist, and let's not forget Woody Allen as a fool in the Middle Ages misquoting Hamlet and getting his hand stuck up the Queen's chastity belt, and his wonderful performance as an Italian Casanova.

So no, it's not quite one of Allen's best films, but it's close. The humor is dirty, yes, but not childish; Allen's intelligence is there, but it's much lighter than `Annie Hall' or other classics, and like a Monty Python or a Mel Brooks it bears multiple viewings. A movie that's funny as hell, essential for Allen fans, and recommended for all.

5 out of 5 stars "My gynecologist told me to avoid excitement!".......2006-01-20

Every bit of Woody Allen's film is funny, but Lou Jacobi's performance in "What Is A Transvestite?" has to be one of the most hilarious performances in cinema history! For that alone, you must buy this DVD for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Which way are you going, Woody?.......2005-10-14

This irreverent and almost surrealistic film finds Woody in plenitude of humor and ingenious; he truly played hard with this free comedy which worked out as a magnificent exorcism exercise about the hidden dragons around this subject; every one of the vignettes is built around the sex and its implications but narrated in such caustic and bitter approach that it will be hard for you to avoid laugh and smile; because this is far to be a common place; it 's a true hitherto in what intelligence, refinement and good spirits you can imagine.

Watch for Gene Wilder and his weird passion: it 's an unforgettable classic that has not aged just a bit. On the contrary, It tends to improve through the years.

One of the five gems of Woody!

5 out of 5 stars The Power Of One.......2007-04-15

What's odd about Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned is that its only flaws are attributable to the screenplay, which was written by Walter Mosley, who also wrote the book it's based on. The film feels like a succession of vignettes loosely strung together, unified by a central character. Fortunately that central character, Socrates Fortlow, is played by Laurence Fishburne, who is easily strong enough to carry the film on his shoulders. (Trivia buffs may be interested to learn that Fishburne's first role was in Apocalypse Now.)

The picture is rich with talent. In addition to Fishburne, (unforgettable in What's Love Got To With It?), there's Cicely Tyson, Natalie Cole, Laurie Metcalf, and a really nice performance from Bill Cobbs. Director Michael Apted is no slouch either, having given us Gorillas In The Mist and Nell, among others. High points to HBO - again - for setting the quality standard. Despite an (almost) all black cast, and a ghetto setting, (not to mention an ex-con protagonist), this is not the typical gangsta dreck we've come to expect from Hollywood. (Call me the next time Hollywood makes a feature film about a black CPA, heart surgeon, or symphony conductor.)

What we have instead is a thoroughly gripping story of a solitary man emerging from prison after 18 years, a convicted rapist and murderer, trying to find a place for himself in society. He has clearly had plenty of time to come to terms with his crimes, and the significance of using violence to solve problems. He has also developed a kind of stoicism. Where prison is hideously corrupting for many, for Socrates it has been a place to learn self-respect, responsibility, and independence. He has few social interactions, but to each one he brings tremendous personal power, a sense of justice, and a willingness to extend himself for the benefit of others.

Despite his nobility, there is still a tremendous rage burning in Socrates. We see it in its most raw form when he encounters the workaday world he is trying to re-enter. He is willing to play by the rules, and he carries himself with manners that are almost courtly, but despite his best efforts even getting a job at a supermarket is virtually impossible. It sounds improbable, but by the time this movie is over we feel nothing but sympathy for Socrates and believe, as his friend does, that he is a "hero." Not a hero from the comic books, and not an anti-hero either. Just an everyday hero who has managed to pull himself out of the muck, regain dignity despite what he's done, and touch a handful of lives in a way that is so uniquely positive, only he could have done it. Uplifting, and highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable!.......2006-10-30

An insightful perspective on the "hidden" part of society--the challenges in the life of the low-income, marginally employed population. Laurence Fishburn gives an awesome performance as a former convict with a heart of gold. Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars A Hollywood film actually worth watching.......2006-05-08

Well actually its not a Hollywood film its an HBO film. If you want to take that as a jab against Hollywood feel free to do so.
Unlike many films that intellectually comment on racism, violence, and poverty this film puts you emotionally right in the middle of all of it. Instead of feeling pity, you respect the main characters strength and courage on his difficult journey. The acting is first rate with truth and real emotions conveyed in every scene. Laurence Fishburne is excellent in this role, you never for one moment think he's anyone but Socrates Fortlow.
Theres a few pacing problems and there is a lull in the later part of the film, but the films strengths far outweigh any issues here.
For its humanity and its eye-opening emotional power I give this film 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars disjointed and needed.......2006-01-02

i have lots of white friends and none of them know what it is like to be me. and to make things worse, i don't know what it is like to be Socrates Fortlow. And that's how the circle goes. Socrates doesn't know what it is like to be me either. Life continues...

Socrates Fortlow was told in book form years ago. Now, it is brought to us via the tube starring many black actors and actresess in top form. There are lots of weird script troubles, but if you can get past them, this is a very good flick. Socrates is a good guy who has a problem fighting his past. All he wants is to get a job and help his friends. His friends problems stem from marital trouble, murder, physical illness and just plain emotional stress. But, Socrates is there to help even if it means his freedom. Good man, good film.

The book is a bunch of stories just thrown in at us and we readers are supposed to put the good parts together and make it make sense. I enjoyed the book, but I am not stupid to its problems. The movie does away with everything but the essense of the story and puts it all together completely out of order. But that doesn't matter because it doesn't matter how you read the story. It's perfect bathroom reading. Go through a chapter on the john, bookmark the page and move on. If you don't bookmark the page, so what? You missed nothing.

Socrates was named by his mom, hoping that having a smart man's name would make him smart. he messed that up early with a prison sentence when he was young. Socco, as his friends call him (his story inappropriately told in voice-over) has been in jail for rape and murder. he is finally out and trying to live his life. he is a naturally violent man who sees life the way we should all see it but deals with it in ways that we should all refrain from.

Most of the essense from the book is in this film with a few embelishes. A good deal of the other stuff was thrown out completely. For the most part, I am astounded at how easily screenwriter/author Mosely puts this thing together while erasing a lot of his artist's integrity. Not many author's would dissect their books in such a way unless they were made believers.

I imagined a worked out Danny Glover as the lead instead of Larry Fishburne. Fishburne is way too young for the part and Glover has the notoriously big hands so celebrated in the novel. But since Fishburne EP'd the project it probably never would have been make without him. All in all, good job.

I think I will put together a LIST about movies and books that tell the black story. That way, it would be easier for white society to see the difference as shown to us in this flick.

5 out of 5 stars This movie just strikes a chord for me.......2005-10-31

I can certainly see how people could overlook this underpublicized gem. I can even see how some people just wouldn't identify with this film. I can't imagine, however, how anyone that has had any kind of serious struggle in their lives wouldn't be moved by this film and it incredible writing, acting, production, and HUMAN values. Socrates Fortlow is a brilliant symbol for something very special. Socrates Fortlow is a man, a human being, unwilling to abandon decency, compassion, and integrity in face of a life of overwhelming hardship.

There is no doubt that much of Fortlow's tragic life is a byproduct of some of his own rash actions. There is also no doubt that the deck was and still is stacked against him. If anything, this movie reinforces my own personal belief that some people pay for their mistakes more than others. What really moves me about this movie and this characters, however, is Fortlow's unyielding quest to acknowledge his shortcomings, be his own man, and share his tremendous inner strength with others who may be a little short on what they need to make the right decisions themselves.

Through his outreach, Fortlow places himself on a path to redemption, even though he scarely seems aware of this himself. Fortlow doesn't reach out as pennance, he does it because he genuinely seems to feel and care about those around him. He is driven by the kind of empathy and compassion that only someone that has suffered deeply can have. His kind actions are instinctive, not planned, and it underscores, in giant terms, the profound decency of the man: the kind of decency I only wish we could find among the "blameless."

This is definitely one of my personal "top 10" movies and I can't see it being displaced anytime soon.

The third collaboration between Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly, It's Always Fair Weather falls short of the classics On the Town and Singin' in the Rain, mostly due to a slow plot and middling songs by Andre Previn, Betty Comden, and Adolph Green. In a story reminiscent of On the Town, Kelly, Dan Dailey, and Michael Kidd play three GIs who return from the war vowing to stay buddies forever. When they reunite 10 years later, however, they find they have little in common, other than having given up on their dreams. Best known as the choreographer of such MGM evergreens as Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, the diminutive Kidd proves adept at kicking up his heels in front of the camera. Cyd Charisse plays a scheming television producer (an unusually down-home character) and Delores Gray is the toothy TV show host. (Gray gets to sing and Charisse dances a little, though not with Kelly.) The best moments, of course, are the dance numbers Kelly choreographed, including the three GIs' trash-can-lid dance, Charisse's solo supported by a crew of boxers, and Kelly's number on roller skates, "I Like Myself," which combines some of the free spirit of "Singin' in the Rain" with the stunt footwear made famous by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in 1937's Shall We Dance. Enjoyable, but not quite a classic. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Gene Kelly proves he's the best, once again........2007-01-14

This movie features a roller skating dance number by Gene Kelly that is outstanding, and is one of my favorite numbers by Mr. Kelly! Costarring Cyd Charisse, Dan Daily, and Michael Kidd, the movie includes wonderful dance numbers by all four. Entertaining plot. If you are a dance/musical fan, you'll defintely want to add this to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Fair Weather Friend.......2007-01-07

This is one of the best of the classic musicals with dance scenes that will boggle your mind. The mini-documentary is a nice bonus. Don't bother with the 'outtakes.'

4 out of 5 stars The most under rated musical of all time.......2006-11-29

I must admit to having seen most of the great musicals with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly the Americans are the tops when it comes to musicals. This musical has my most enjoyable tap dance routine of all with Gene kelly tap dancing on roller skates, now I now Fred & Ginger did a similar routine in 1937 however they did not have the sheer movement and skope that kelly had.

If however you require a plot I am afraid this musical is a little short, however it does amble along and there is a few light hearted moments especailly watch out for the cinemascope on the new DVD where you can finally enjoy the complete scenes featuring Ted (Gene Kelly), Doug (Dan Dailey), and Angie (Michael Kidd) performing their dance routines.

4 out of 5 stars A little sour, perhaps, but with great dancing by Gene Kelly, Dan Dailey, Michael Kidd and Cyd Charisse.......2006-08-12

If you like superior dancing, It's Always Fair Weather is worth watching and, perhaps, worth owning. Some people say that its relative failure with the public is because the story was too cynical. I think it's more than that. There is a sourness and self-pity about the film that is exemplified by Gene Kelly's performance. He plays Ted Reilly, a small-time New York boxing promoter and gambler who, after World War II, never achieved the success he and his two buddies expected of him. The movie is about the three of them, bonded "forever" in friendship by their experiences in the war who agree to meet ten years later. But Ted has become a failure. Aspiring painter Doug Halloran (Dan Dailey) has become a successful but snobbish ad executive. Angie Valentine (Michael Kidd) has remained a small-town hick who owns a diner and embarrasses the other two. Within 15 minutes of their reunion at Tim's Bar & Grill they're uncomfortable together. Within an hour they heartily detest each other.

The premise of the film has great potential. The opening sequences are exuberant and stylish, with a terrific three-man dance routine. The ending has genuine poignance and satisfaction, showing that people can learn from each other and reestablish themselves as friends. But the in-between, for me, is a long slog redeemed by the dancing. Kelly, Dailey and Kidd were outstanding dancers; they do some great work together and individually in the film. Keep an eye out for:

--The Binge Dance. The three of them, just discharged, get drunk and start a raucous dance that takes them into the streets of New York, in and out of a taxi and, spectacularly, with their left feet stuck on trash can lids. It's loud, funny and something only three skilled professionals could have pulled off.

--Baby, You Knock Me Out, a fast, stylish number danced by Cyd Charisse at Stillman's Gym. She's all over the place, in and out of the ring, and backed up by a crowd of muscular male dancers who look like they could be boxers themselves.

--I Like Myself. Kelly has escaped from some hoods in a roller skating rink. He finds himself outside on the street but still with the skates on. In an amazingly dexterous dance, he tap-dances, glides, spins and goes from street to sidewalk and back again on skates. As far as I could tell, these skates had real, moving wheels. He tap dances and then goes into long glides in continuous shots.

--Situationwise is a drunk, comic routine for Dailey that uses all his comic talent, falling down, staggering around, looking potted and making fools of several stuffed shirts.

--Once I Had Two Friends is a slow, sad soft shoe number with Kelly, Dailey and Kidd dancing separately in a coordinated three-way split screen. This is the kind of thing the three dancers could do with almost off-hand grace.

Betty Comden and Adolph Green, who wrote the book and the lyrics, were usually skilled at combining sophisticated but good-natured satire with subject matter that deserved it. It's Always Fair Weather not only skewers our recollections about friendships and how oblivious we can be to our own changes, but also takes a lot of pokes at television, at smarmy "This Is Your Life" type programs and at advertising. Some are funny, some miss. Andre Previn, who wrote the music, did a competent enough job.

Gene Kelly was always hyper-competitive. He could be not just demanding but deliberately rude. If he felt another star dancer in one of his movies might be competition, he would take action. His treatment of Donald O'Connor in making Singin' in the Rain was obnoxious. Here, he saw to it that Michael Kidd's one solo number was cut out. He evidently tried to reduce Dailey's dance time. At 43, his features had begun to harden into a kind of permanent dissatisfaction, relieved only when he was smiling or grinning. But he was a great movie dancer. Fortunately, the movie gives us a record of some of his best efforts, but also of the great dancing of Dan Dailey and Michael Kidd.

Dailey had an easy-going, even goofy kind of personality, but he also was a good actor. Watch him when he's on the phone to his wife. In the first set-up she's telling him again she's getting a divorce. In the second, she's telling him she's seen that he's a changed man. All we hear is his side of the conversation. He does an expert job . Michael Kidd was a small, wiry dancer who was far better known as a choreographer. If you enjoyed The Girl Hunt Ballet from The Bandwagon and the barn raising dance from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, you're admiring Kidd's work. And keep an eye out for David Burns, who plays Tim, the gruff owner of Tim's Bar & Grill. He was a long-time featured star in Broadway musicals who didn't make many movies. He does a nice job.

The DVD picture is excellent. There are several extras, including one called "It's Always Fair Weather: Going Out on a High Note." It tells us how this was one of the last of the big MGM musicals, gives viewpoints on why it wasn't well received and on its strong points. The filming evidently was not a happy experience. Donen didn't want to co-direct. When he finally agreed, Kelly treated him like a very junior partner. They seemed to have had one bitter argument after another while making the movie. Afterwards, for years they would barely speak to each other.

4 out of 5 stars Better Than Its Reputation.......2006-05-29

At last, It's Always Fair Weather is available in proper widescreen in a beautifully remastered DVD. It was worth waiting for. I've always had a lot of affection for this under-rated MGM musical. While recognizing its faults, there is quite a lot to recommend this end-of-an-era production from the great Arthur Freed MGM musical unit.

By all accounts, making the film was not a happy experience for most of the participants and some of this tension shows. But, given the fairly cynical premise of the storyline, this does not always work against the finished product. It is certainly different from the frothy concoctions of An American In Paris and Singin' In The Rain, but being different is never necessarily a bad thing. And the film seems to capture the changing mood of the times when musicals were quickly falling out of favor and television was just beginning to be a major presence in everyone's lives.

This is a Gene Kelly film and everyone else is strictly support. Being a huge Gene Kelly fan, this is not a problem for me. But even in supporting roles, the rest of the cast is pretty impressive. Cyd Charisse was seldom more gorgeous or slinky but she gets a good run for her money by the incredible Delores Gray who is both comic and sexy. Kelly has two dancing partners who have no trouble keeping up with him - tall, lanky and immensely likeable Dan Daily and short, intense and extremely talented Michael Kidd. The numbers where the three of them dance together - particularly the famous dustbin lid routine - are among the best performances by male dancers in an MGM musical. Cyd Charisse gets a fabulous solo in a boxers' gym. But, like everyone else, I really regret the lack of a Kelly/Charisse dance duet. There was really no need for that omission. But unexpected joy is to be had from Delores Gray's numbers. And, of course, the best of all is Gene Kelly's solo on rollerskates - right up there with his "Singin' In The Rain" number. (Some observers have commented that the lyrics to his song "I Like Myself" are too true to be good.)

The songs themselves are ok if not especially memorable. The Comden and Green lyrics have their usual wit and just a bit of an edge. Andre Previn's music is bright and slightly jazzy, if not the usual sort of movie musical melodies. The direction by Kelly and Stanley Donen makes clever use of the widescreen of several occasions. On this new DVD, the film looks and sounds great. I suppose all that's really missing is that elusive extra special "oomph" factor. But it's still a very good film - much better than some detractors would have you believe.

There are also a few nice extras on the DVD. It's Always Fair Weather is not one of the best of the MGM musicals, but it's also a long way from being the worst.

4 out of 5 stars Extra footage is worth the price........2007-01-04

The actual DVD itself is the same old showtime it has always been, which was a bit of a shame. They really could have done with some more and better footage of Magic's return to the game. There really wasn't anything ): However the full games that come with this new version are priceless for any Magic fan especially the All Star game filled with the games greatest players(Minus Larry Bird who was injured) all having a last shot at him and then paying tribute by stopping the game. Truly a fitting tribute to end a Magic career.

5 out of 5 stars Good DVD, Great Selection of Games.......2006-07-19

If your a Magic Johnson fan, it is a must for you too pick it up.

Mostly if you a fan of classic NBA games, this is a must pickup. The disc include some rare games like his first versus the San Diego Clippers (now in LA) and his 1992 NBA All-Star Game MVP award

If you were wanting to inquire about the always showtime part of it, then your better off buying the smaller version of this but overall it is a good deal.

4 out of 5 stars Games on the 2 disc DVD? .......2006-04-13

Which 3 games will be on the 2 disc set? Game 6 of the 1980 Finals, '92 All-Star game, '87 Finals gm 4 "junior sky hook", '88 Finals game 3 are a few that come to mind.

3 out of 5 stars Magic is Magic, but DVD is not.......2005-08-23

This DVD follows the career of the great Magic Johnson. There are highlights, lowlights, college and NBA battles and championship rings. This is one of the NBA greats at his best. In similar format to Sir Charles and Hakeem the Dream and in similar length, the DVD offers good value, but is a little short in length.

It would have been great to have an additional DVD like Larry Bird's or Ultimate Michael with actual games of the great man, not just highlights. While a good addition, not essential.

    5 out of 5 stars Pure Magic.......2005-07-14

What could I say more..its just pure majic..he deserves the name of the majic man...simply amazing and entertaining

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Jordan, very good Bird & Magic..........2007-01-16

First, let me say that package's value per price is OUTSTANDING! You get 7 double-sided DVDs for 30$! You can't argue with that!

Second, it's not as good as I thought (hence the 4 stars instead of 5)...

    ULTIMATE JORDAN
The most comprehensive coverage of Jordan's dazzling career is OK. There is too much talk and too little highlights, but that is the weakness of every NBA package. Jordan has many highlights that are not present (and that could've been included), but all that is forgivable when you get to the extra features: Michael's BEST dunks, moves, assists, clutch-shots and Michael's great 8 games. These extra-features are the best part of the whole package, since you get MJ in an exciting NBA-Action Top 10 Countdown format - you'll be thrilled even if you saw ALL of them before because thare is very little chit-chat!

MAGIC: ALWAYS SHOWTIME & LARRY BIRD: BASKETBALL LEGEND
Magic's and Larry's career were as impressive as Michael's, but again - too little highlights and too many talking heads telling us how great Magic was. Aslo, I don't like this kind of rewriting the history, showing only the highs and (almost) forgetting the lows. And finally - there are no extra-features like on MJ's DVD! WTF? Surely Magic and Larry had enough highlights to put on a TOP 10 in every category!

And finally the third - the included complete games: MJ x5, Larry x3 and Magic x3...

As great as those games were, the choices are a bit peculiar, especially regarding Magic and Bird. I mean, two games from Magic's rookie year and one All-star game after he retired? Not one game from his 1987 MVP season when he downed Boston in the Garden? Only one Playoff's Game for Bird? And finally - no whole game with "The Shot" for MJ? Come on!!!

But let us go back to what is good about those games: what is great about those games is that you see basketball as it should be played: a combo of smarts, skill and atlethicism compared to today's no-smarts, low level-skills and steroid-athlesticism. You can see here how all ten players on the court could make a layup with their right or left hand, as well as how all big man could put the ball on the floor or pass the ball which is a lost art today, except for Steve Nash, Jason Kidd and maybe Lebron James.

Also, you'll see that team-defenses prior to "Bad Boys" were virtually non existent, that refs called the game in star's favour exactly like today, but there were a lot less whistled calls compared to today's game. And you'll notice there was very little complaining about refereeing back then.

The quality of the early games (1980-1983) is not so good, but that's understandable.

So, overall? A good introduction to each of these basketball legends. MJ's bit of package is the best, while Magic's and Bird's falters a bit (not including extra-features). The games are a great treat, but the choice could be better...

5 out of 5 stars A must have for every nba fan.......2006-10-10
