Sydney Pollack's 1985 multiple-Oscar winner is a sumptuous and emotionally satisfying film about the life of Danish writer Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep), better known as Isak Dinesen, who travels to Kenya to be with her German husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer) but falls for an English adventurer (Robert Redford). The film is slow in developing the relationship, but it is rich in beautiful images of Africa and in the romantic tone surrounding Blixen's gradual discovery of her life and voice. One downside: while we may all love Redford, he is as convincingly British as Kevin Costner is in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. --Tom Keogh
Description
The most acclaimed motion picture of 1985 stars Robert Redford and Meryl Streep in one of the screen's great epic romances. Directed by Oscar winner Sydney Pollack, Out of Africa is the fascinating true story of Karen Blixen, a strong-willed woman who, with her philandering husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer), runs a coffee plantation in Kenya, circa 1914. To her astonishment, she soon discovers herself falling in love with the land, its people and a mysterious white hunter (Redford). The masterfully crafted, breathtakingly produced story of love and loss earned Oscars for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay (based on material from another medium), Cinematography, Original Score, Art Direction (Set Decoration) and Sound.

This true story's appeal is for all generations.A movie that intrigues and captivates as it tells of courage and perseverance while maintaining a tension of romance throughout. It is made of everything a great story should be.Meryl Streep and Robert Redford are the perfect actors for these roles.Immerse yourself!

5 out of 5 stars A Favorite Film.......2007-06-09

This is one of my two favorite films of all time. The sweep and grandeur, along with the beautiful human elements makes this film a keeper!

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-06-08

This is one of the great classic films with wonderful actors, beautiful story and great photography. Love It

5 out of 5 stars It Moved Me........2007-06-05

A masterpiece of cinematic beauty. This film is based on Danish writer Karen Blixen's(Isak Dinesen)years in Africa. One of the great performances of Meryl Streep, in a career of many great performances.

The story of a strong, yet very sensitive woman who follows her husband to Kenya to start a Coffee Plantation. His philandering ways soon leaves her with syphilis. Of course their relationship ends, and she is romanced by the Brit' Denys Finch Hatton, played by Robert Redford minus an ascent. One of the few often heard complaints during the film's release. But their chemistry still makes for one of the great screen romances ever.

1985's Best Motion Picture Academy Award winner, a year that saw many superb films. One of my other favorites that year was "The Color Purple", either one of which was worthy of the award in my book. Sydney Pollack also received the Best Director Academy Award for some of his most ingenius work. One of the most beautifully photographed films is magnificently transferred to DVD, though if you've never seen it on the big screen don't miss the opportunity should it ever arise. And John Barry's musical score makes for an even more breathtaking experience.

5 out of 5 stars Some of Barry's Best Work.......2007-05-11

Everything it seems, has been said about this gorgeous film, except perhaps about the sound track. John Barry's work is outstanding and seems to enhance the move at its most powerful moments. The lasting impression I have more than two decades after the movie is the "Flight over Africa," when Denys takes his love up for a flight in his plane. I could watch - and listen - a million times and be enthralled every time.

South African director Jamie Uys caught lightning in a bottle with The Gods Must Be Crazy--a Coke bottle, to be specific. This slaphappy collection of goofy pratfalls and culture-clash gags became an enormous international smash, and made a sort of star out of the Bushman selected to play the central role, the completely ingratiating N!Xau. He plays a man, unaware of white culture, who finds a Coca-Cola bottle in the Kalahari (dropped by a passing pilot) and promptly has his life turned around by this mystical object. The movie looks slipshod and even amateurish at times, yet its attitude is so bubbly it's hard to resist. Proving that physical comedy remains a true international language, millions of moviegoers around the world drank it up. --Robert Horton

I had seen this movie years ago and loved it.I watched it again a week ago I still love it and will watch again. It is really funny and entertaining. It is worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best!.......2007-06-08

This movie has always been one of my favorites. Very few productions capture the ridiculous nature of modern society as well as "The Gods Must Be Crazy". The stark contrast between a Bushman and "civilized" people show that the Bushman is happier and better off without all of the items that we think we need. The movie continues to poke fun at our culture and taboos. If you watch this movie, you should read the trivia on it. The Bushman had never acted before, and was, in fact, a real Bushman. The movie did not do well in theaters, but caught on later to become a cult classic. This is one of those movies that everyone should see at least once!

5 out of 5 stars Best film out of Africa ever!.......2007-05-12

Not really the best movie ever in the history of movies, but one that everyone should watch for its unique charm. Low budget movie with high value content. Btw, this is a movie and not a documentary, so you cant really take anything they say about Africa or its people as fact.

5 out of 5 stars Classic. insightful and very funny!.......2007-05-04

I was first introduced to this film in high school. We were studying the effects of the West on those from other parts of the world, and nothing says Western arrival like the triumphant descent of the infamous Coke bottle, that mysteriously drops from the sky and plagues tribal leader Xi (N!xau) and his family. Why did this thing fall to Earth, and why does it continue to plague him, no matter what lengths he goes to get rid of it (even throw it off of the ends of the Earth, for good and all). Add in the subplot (or counterplot), with a bumbling scientist (Marius Weyers) with an incredible fear of women, especially beautiful blondes (Sandra Prinsloo), and you've got a great slapstick comedy with a message!

I haven't had a chance to watch the sequel, but I plan to do it straight away. This, the original, is wonderful and though, it definitely has a 1980s feel (it was filmed in 1980), it still remains very funny and clever, complete with fast-forward photography, enough silliness to sustain the attentions of the youngest viewers, and a compelling message for the rest of us, about the fate of "modern" civilization. Wonderful. I believe that the United Nations should make this a prerequisite for anyone planning to pursue a career in politics.

5 out of 5 stars It's great!.......2007-03-20

I really liked this movie. It's a classic if you live or have lived in Africa, I had heard about it from so many of my African friends I finally bought it for myself. Very funny.

This enjoyable comedy is one of the last Disney live-action films that feels akin to their earlier, innocent films. Jan-Michael Vincent plays the title character Nanu, a parentless child brought up in Africa with unbelievable physical skills (check out his introduction, running faster than a cheetah, played in front of pure-'70s rear-screen projection). John Amos and Tim Conway play a hapless college coaching duo whose fortunes change once they spot Nanu. After a run-in with a smart witch doctor (Roscoe Lee Browne), the two bring Nanu--and his pet tiger--to America, where Nanu finds Jane (Dayle Haddon) and starts to rewrite the record book. The film doesn't age that well, but the little ones will laugh at the shenanigans, especially when Conway is miniaturized by the doctor. Several sportscasters appear as themselves including Howard Cosell, who musters up the line, "I've never seen anything like this in my entire illustrious career." --Doug Thomas

Description

Get on track with Disney's hilarious offbeat comedy starring Jan-Michael Vincent (TV's AIRWOLF) and Tim Conway -- now on Disney DVD. Coach Archer (John Amos) is more famous for losing than winning, but a fateful African safari with his wacky assistant (Conway) leads them to a boy wonder named Nanu (Vincent) -- who just might give them a winning streak. Coaxing him to America is one thing, but the laughs never stop when Nanu meets Jane, fame, and brings the jungle to the gym on his way to becoming the World's Greatest Athlete. Don't miss a chance to take the field with wild family fun for everyone!

5 out of 5 stars Jan-Michael Vincent Saves the Day.......2007-05-21

I recently watched it again and it holds up very well. It is quite funny and still works today. A lot of credit has to go to John Amos as Coach Sam Archer. He gave this silly but entertaining film a lot of character and its his vision to make jungle boy Jan-Michael Vincent the next sports super star to give new life to all his coaching efforts. Jan-Michael Vincent really looked good in this Disney movie. Jan-Michael Vincent could have been a very good star. Too bad things turned bad for him. These were his glory days. He makes a great Disney hero in THE WORLD'S GREATEST ATHLETE. This film really looks great on DVD and it truly is a lot of fun

2 out of 5 stars Tarzan competing in college athletics?!?.......2005-11-11

MOVIE: Perhaps it should be called World's Worst Movie. But it's not.

Imagine Tarzan competing in college athletics. That's the premise of this movie starring Tim Conway as a second banana coaching assistant, John Amos as Coach Archer, and Jan-Michael Vincent in the title role. While this is billed as a comedy, I found nothing laugh-out-loud hilarious in this as an adult and only remembered the tiger on the plane joke from my childhood. Mostly it just falls flat. Some images stick out like leftover 60s special effects, like Conway as a little guy calling on a huge rotary dial phone after climbing out of a purse. The tiger gets points just for being there. And Vincent is mildly amusing to see in a role eleven years before Airwolf.

First up is Conway, which is why I watched this 1973 movie again. It is not one of his best performances, although he tries. He's there as Milo Jackson to fumble things up for the coach, doing his shtick, gaining top billing in the process. He's better in the Apple Dumpling Gangs 1 & 2 and definitely in The Private Eyes. Amos's character consistently overshadows his (naturally). Conway's best scene is getting stuck as a result of voodoo unknowingly by the coach.

Amos (Gordon Howard on "Mary Tyler Moore") seems just to have lame material, starting with a standard coming-from-behind coaching speech for all sports and especially in the plot to trick the young Nanu to compete in college athletics.

Nanu from Namibia, Africa, is an honorable man with long blond hair dressed only in a loincloth. This lad just wants to stay there and play with his pet tiger. However, once he is tricked into believing that he has saved Coach Archer's life, he is obligated to follow him the rest of his life. Of course, once the deception is revealed, he sheds his civilized clothing and wants to return back home leaving his coaches stranded. His romantic interest is tutor Jane Douglas played by Canadian Dayle Haddon in her first role. Alluding to Jane of the Tarzan fame is funnier on paper than in this film.

Nanu's father, witch doctor Gazenga, played by Roscoe Lee Browne, is also on had to disrupt Nanu's college career and cast voodoo spells. Danny Goldman plays jilted boyfriend Leopold Maxwell in the plot to send Nanu home and reclaim Jane.

Nancy Walker portrays blind, majorly blind landlady Mrs. Petersen, led to believe that the tiger living in her house in just another student. This is definitely not Walker's best role, because the landlady is pretty stupid, but caring, talking as she does to clothes and the tiger thinking that they are real people. Alas, poor Ms. Walker is hidden behind a hideously large pair of glasses.

Also of note, Howard Cosell plays a long winded, obnoxious sports announcer in the third act. This is a more limited role than the movie trailer portrays. The trailer also makes the movie's plot more substantial.

It is lightweight Disney movie, not the World's Greatest Movie, by any stretch of the imagination. Amusing at times. And fortunately the movie does have a sufficient and pleasant ending, a replay of an earlier scene, putting the coaches back where they began... almost.

DVD: It is widescreen, so that is good. (Important for at least one scene with Conway sneaking onto camera.) The trailer is unrestored, but available. The outtakes last ten minutes, but have no commentary and questionable value.

3 out of 5 stars Good But Inconsistent "Dopey" Disney Comedy.......2005-09-25

I bought this DVD knowing that "The World's Greatest Athlete" wasn't one of the best of the "Dopey" Disney Comedies (For those who don't know, the "Dopey" Disney Comedies were the ones the studio made from 1959 ("Shaggy Dog") to 1984 (when Eisner took over). Admittedly there are stupider Disney comedies to come out since, but they don't have the charm and home-grown look and feel of these 59-84 ones.)

Anyway, blah blah blah, "Athlete" was issued in 1973 and is the first Disney feature to have an African-American star (John Amos) since "Song of the South"! The writing for this film is inconsistent. There are some genuine laughs, particularly from Tim Conway in his first Disney movie, and even some from announcer Howard Cosell!

As far as this DVD goes, I have had no luck finding it in US stores, so the version I received is a Canadian copy. I don't mind as long as it works in my player, which it does. The film itself is a widescreen transfer, which is a good thing, as Disney has sometimes not released their films to DVD in this format. The print quality is excellent and there are even some extras! Although, apart from the original trailer appear to be some random cutting room outtakes that don't have synchonized sound so you don't really know what's going on, and they're not particularly funny, either.

Overall, if you are a "Dopey" Disney Comedy fan, a Tim Conway fan, or wonder where the hell John Amos went after "Roots", check this one out. Otherwise, I direct you to "The Apple Dumpling Gang" for a better time and many more extras on the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Rolling the dice on a Disney DVD? We have a winner!.......2005-04-21

Here is an excellent example of live-action Disney from the 1970's. A fun film for everyone starring Jan-Michael Vincent as a superathlete raised in the rain forrest (what we used to call the jungle), Roscoe Lee Browne as his mentor, the very funny Nancy Walker as a 'blind as a bat' landlady, and the ever comic genius, Tim Conway. The best suprise is a very funny performance from actor John Amos as a track coach with a dismal win-loss record.

Disney Studios is graciously presenting this fine movie in its Original Aspect Ratio of 1.85:1. Why this movie and not others is, well, typical Disney mentality. But I guess we take 'em as we get 'em and Disney gets my money. Too bad "That Darn Cat, The Barefoot Executive and Lt. Robin Crusoe, U.S.N." missed the 'letterbox boat'!

Plus if you remember seeing this movie, I'd like to learn to park my car at the airport like in the movie.

The second sequel to the hit Shaft, this film foreshadows itself early on when Shaft, asked to go undercover in Africa to halt modern-day slave trade, claims that he's not James Bond but strictly Sam Spade. Bond, however, is the operative model here, with John Shaft masquerading as an Ethiopian to infiltrate the slave business and bring it down. Yet everyone he encounters seems to know who he is and wants to kill him--but the string of dead bodies he leaves in his wake across two continents proves that no one is able to stop everyone's favorite hip private eye. Written by Stirling Silliphant, the film is long on action set pieces that are filmed with more energy than in Shaft's Big Score. Given contemporary practices involving smugglers of illegal Chinese and Mexican immigrants, the plot isn't all that far-fetched. Roundtree, as usual, is the picture of unflappable cool--but don't get him mad. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars One of the best in the series.......2005-08-20

I have to say, this one is my favorite of them all. The action, sex, and violence!! The original black superhero!!

3 out of 5 stars A CHANGE OF PACE FOR SHAFT.......2003-10-06

THIS TIME, JOHN SHAFT [RICHARD ROUNDTREE] IS FORCED TO GO TO AFRICA TO INFILTRATE A 20TH CENTURY SLAVE CARTEL. I THINK IT'S GOOD THAT THEY TRYED TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT WITH THE SERIES. THOUGH IT STILL PALES IN COMPARISON TO THE ORIGINAL, IT'S STILL A DECENT ACTION FILM.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo for Shaft!.......2003-07-07

Shaft does it again! He brings his street sense to Africa and woos an African princess in the process...and right under the watchful eye of her bodyguard! Too smooth! I was actually craving for more after this one...who knows, he might have done the same in Europe had more had been produced! Richard Roundtree was truly one of the hottest names in the business at that time as John Shaft. Get the other two as well to complete the collection ("Shaft" and "Shaft's Big Score").

4 out of 5 stars Worth it for one line.......2002-12-29

Shaft is discussing an impending female circumcision with the African princess and suggests "We put a little wear and tear on that thing before they cut it off". SMOOOOVE

4 out of 5 stars John Shaft Plays James Bond in Africa.......2002-01-24

Though the second sequel to "Shaft," there's no remaining trace of the first two "blaxploitation" films. "Shaft in Africa" looks more like a big-budget 007 film, and instead of Roger Moore, put Richard Roundtree in the hero's role.

The pair of director John Guillermin and writer Stirling Silliphant will definetely reminds you of "Towering Inferno," pinnacle of the "disaster movies" in vogue in the 70s, and "Shaft in Africa" has the same feeling -- it is packed with actions and violence, plus costly set (or shots on location). This time Shaft, in order to stop the modern-day slave trading in Africa, has to endure a chains of brutal attacks from enemies and the scorching heat of Afraica. The globe-trotting story leads him from NYC to Ethiopia, and then to France. And Shaft doesn't forget that he is THE sexy guy; Shaft's love is played by beautiful princess Vonetta McGee, and he even spends a good time with a white girl in bed.

If you expect "blaxploitation" films in "Shaft in Africa" you may be diappointed. It is no longer that. The total tone is nearer to films of James Bond (to which Shaft refers briefly) and actions never stop coming on screen between Shaft's one-liners. As far as the actions are concerned, it never lets you down, and you will see unique things here and there that you can find only in the 70s: in one scene Shaft, completely naked, proves that he can do stick-fighting (!).

Overall, "Shaft in Africa" is a good action film. Often its violence is excessive, but the film's pace is always slick and Roundtree plays convincingly the cool and sexy hero. There is no more Isaac Hayes theme song, but Four Tops's great song will make you forget that. And don't miss the airport scene in which Shaft has to take a photo with a lion. This lion (of course, he is a real one) is audacious enough to give him a quick, threatening look to him. Shaft (or Roundtree) doesn't look happy about that.

2 out of 5 stars Bad, but has 2 famous unknown actors.......2005-08-14

The other review was well written, but I wanted to point out that the movie has two minor actors with great parts - in other movies.

First is the lead, Hardy Kruger, perhaps best known as the model airplane designer in the original "Flight of the Phoenix", a pretty well-regarded movie starring Jimmie Stewart.

Second is supporting actor Reggie Nalder, who was the assassin in the great Hitchcock movie "The Man Who Knew Too Much" also starring Jimmie Stewart. Nalder was also a bad guy in the brainwashing scene of the original "The Manchurian Candidate" (not starring Jimmie Stewart).

    Back to the movie itself...

Has an odd jazz score over stock documentary scenes of drum-beating Africans and nature scenes of animals on the veldt as the introduction and ending.

Image quality is very poor, with a constant stream of spots and flecks and lines, as well as the shifting color tint - somewhere between cyan and green - but never accurate.

As the other reviewer mentions, once the young lady is clothed (at the 26 minute mark) there is not much left in the movie and your interest will waver toward other incidental things - in my case, the various still cameras that characters used on occassion.

I'd say if this cheap DVD puts your order into the "free shipping" category, it is almost worth it.

2 out of 5 stars Almost-topless blonde swings on a vine; film at 11:00.......2005-01-22

A no-budget German girlie-Tarzan pot boiler, this is the kind of movie where your mind wanders and you find yourself focusing on various peripheral subjects: Why do the topless African dancing girls look so bored? Was that bit of dialog actually written, or was it just made up by the dubbing actor on the spur of the moment ("uh-oh, his lips are moving; I'd better say something") How did they get Marion Michaels' hair to "just happen" to fall in front of her chest (can you believe that Amazon won't let you use the 'B' word that rhymes with "chest" in a review!?!) in most (but not all!) of her topless scenes? (did they use rubber cement? double-sided tape?) How old was Michaels, anyway? And goodness, didn't they have nice looking streetcars in 1959 Hamburg?

Obviously, this movie's sole excuse for existing was to present as much as the censors would allow of the lovely and nubile Marion Michaels to a prurient audience. And if the video quality weren't so bad, and if they didn't go and put clothes on her about one third through the film, and if it weren't for that darn rubber cement, I would have been quite happily and appreciatively prurient myself. As it is, it's still a bit of a hoot to watch, and Michaels truly is lovely and nubile, and those Hamburg streetcars really are nice!

3 out of 5 stars way to kill a series.......2007-05-17

Kickboxer 5 was not the worst martial arts movie I have seen, but compared to the other 4 Kickboxers, this just did not belong. The other Kickboxers remained fairly close to one another through either story or characters. The only element from any of the previous Kickboxers found in Redemption was David Sloan, who appaears no more than a shadow getting the beat down and killed during the beginning credits. Its quite ridiculous too, because the goons that kill him can't seem to lay a hand on Matt Reeves (Marc Dacascos) throughout the movie.

Matt Reeves, our main character, receives the news that Sloan was killed by the Negaal Federation, and soon they kill another of Matt's friends who has just won an important ring match. So Matt of course wants revenge, travels to South Africa to locate and stop the leader of the Federation - Mr. Negaal. Mr Negaal (James Ryan) is an ok villain, but really has no skill in this movie that impressed me. His goons are complete idiots. The other characters in the movie are your basic average B movie actors. Marc Dacascos is the only highlight, of the film period. His katas and training sequences are worth watching, but any fights he takes part in are just totally unimpressive, and that includes the final brawl against Negaal which is one of the most dissapointing climatic fights I have ever seen.

Redemption is just average, maybe not even quite. Its not extremely cheesy nor ridiculously stupid, but it just does not impress, when it so easily could have. The fights are pointless and the plot is too predictable. If you are bored and need some average entertainment, here you go. Don't even bother getting this if you wish to complete your Kickboxer collection - it just doesn't even fit the role.

2 out of 5 stars only a slight improvement above Kickboxer 4.......2005-06-27

Kickboxer and/or Mark Dacascos fans may want to look elsewhere. While Kickboxer 5 is a bit better than the fourth, that's about it. There are a few good fight scenes halfway through the movie but then it goes downhill from there. Kickboxer 5 starts off with David Sloan getting murdered by some crimeboss in South Africa. Mark's character declares vengence (what a surprise!) and he goes off to find the crimeboss responsible for David's death with the help of an escaped convict. The final fight scene with Mark Dacascos and the crimeboss is just as ridiculous as the final fight scene in Kickboxer 4. As most direct to video films go, this one doesn't deliver overall so if you are one who wants to see the Kickboxer series than just stick with the first three movies. Trust me on this one!

    3 out of 5 stars It's got Mark...........2004-02-24

And that's about it. Yes, it's little more than a display of Mark's abilities as a martial artist and his charm shines through what is basically a lousy movie. There's poor performance everywhere and plot holes even I couldn't ignore. Mark goes to the police after seeing his friend killed and the chief says there's no evidence. NO EVIDENCE???!!! What would you call a first hand account of the murder?

Ok, let's look at the good points. Um...Mark. I loved watching his various workouts, especially the one towards the end where he's standing outside the ranch house. He makes a gesture which seems to move the flock of sheep about him. Mere serendipity I assume, but effective. He then proceeds to show off some back flips and an arrow break on his neck, which he learned from his father, Al.

It's for movies like this that DVD's were invented. You can fast forward past the parts you don't like. Which sadly, are too plentiful in this movie.

1 out of 5 stars Formula All the Way.......2003-08-26

The original KICKBOXER with Jean Claude Van Damme was an interesting movie that dealt with issues of overcoming one's limits. When Van Damme did not wish to reprise his role of the kickboxer, Sasha Mitchell tried valiantly in three more sequels, but his juvenile appearance and limited martial arts ability hindered his performances. Now in KICKBOXER 5, director Kristine Peterson uses Mark Dacascos, who also tries, but as with Sasha Mitchell, his acting does not convince. Part of the problem with the sequels, including this one, is that the role of the villain is at least as important as that of the hero's. In the original, Michele Quisi is Tong Po, a believable Thai kickboxing thug. Quisi was a multi-layered antagonist, who, in his kicking the wall in an early scene, set the tone that here was a brute not to be trifled with. In the sequel KB2, Quisi returns, even if Van Damme does not, and it is his performance that saves the film. In KB5, the villain is James Ryan, who simply does not look menacing enough to act as the dramatic foil to Dacascos. Ryan is simply playing out, rather than playing, the demented leader of an outlaw kickboxing federation whose inner council ought to see that their chief is leading them to ruin. You would think that any leader who kills his own minions ought to worry about their continuing loyalty. The plot, of course, is nonsense. It involves the usual absurdities of a warped thug (Ryan), who tries to collar all the world's kickboxing titles as his own personal property even as all his henchmen try to tell him that by doing so, he is compromising his (and their) other vital interests. Dacascos refuses to join Ryan's outlaw federation and spends the majority of the film battling first Ryan's inept goons then Ryan himself in a climactic concluding confrontation that seemed not climactic at all. There is absolutely nothing in KB5 that rings true or makes one want to wish for a KB6.

1 out of 5 stars Kickboxer Fans Save Your Time!.......2003-06-17

Fans of the Kickboxer series will be dissapointed by this fifth installment which has nothing to do with the previous entries except for the fact that David Sloan is killed in the opening. Sasha doesn't show up, it's just a siloutte of another actor.

The characters are pretty boring and the film itself is very tame for an R-rating though Dascasos use of the word "buttface" could be a bit extreme for some.

The film could have gone without attaching the Kickboxer name to it. Even on its own two feet, this movie isn't very good and I am somewhat a fan of the lead (Mark Dascasos).

5 out of 5 stars South African "Little House on the Prairie".......2007-02-26

Don't let the DVD cover of this movie fool you; it doesn't do the movie justice in any way. I thought it was a dumb kids movie with talking animals. Instead, it is a wonderful family drama in the spirit of 'Anne of Green Gables.' Its values are probably closer to 'Little House on the Prairie.'

The first quality that stands out for traditional values families is Uncle Otto (Armin Muller-Stahl, who received an Oscar nomination for this portrayal) , who clearly is a humble Christian who genuinely loves everyone. Yet, he was not without sin. Maybe this is why he could be so humble, because he had a young black son that reminded him daily of his need for God's love. Unfortunately, he passes away in the movie, and after that the movie loses its sense of Divine purpose. He'd helped the kids see their activities and feelings in the context of God's purpose.

Since very few movies give any acknowledgment of righteousness being of the Divine, this movie is still a great family movie. I won't go into the story much, except that the two orphan girls and Otto's son know that the stranger is really just a gold digger and they try to prove it to their crabby, bitter aunt. Parents might want to discuss with their kids how the girls might have handled the situation if they could have talked it over with Uncle Otto. If you can find this South African movie and are looking for movies with a genuinely humble Christian role model, this movie is for your family.

4 out of 5 stars The Fight between Good and Evil.......2006-10-18

This is a wonderful family movie...I don't have a family but I was delighted with it. The scheming stranger in a tall hat that wanders into the home of these farm people and the orphan's lives. He worms his way into the good graces of the cruel step-mother but the children see thru him. The kindly grandfather sees good in all. The movie reminded me of many fairy tails I have read tho there was no trick photography --it was all real life. You cannot go wrong with this movie. Gather the kids, pop the popcorn and get ready for a good family evening where you almost was to hiss at the villains!
