Diamonds Are Forever: Sean Connery retired from the 007 franchise after You Only Live Twice but was lured back for one last official appearance as James Bond in Diamonds Are Forever. Goldfinger director Guy Hamilton keeps the film zipping along gamely from one entertaining set piece to another, including a terrific car chase in a parking lot, a battle with a pair of bikini-clad killer gymnasts named Bambi and Thumper, and a deadly game with a bizarre pair of fey, sardonic killers who dispatch their victims with elaborate invention. Connery retired again after this one but he returned once more, for Never Say Never Again 15 years later. --Sean Axmaker

The Living Daylights: Timothy Dalton made his 007 debut in the lean, mean mode of Sean Connery, doing away with the pun-filled camp of Roger Moore's final outings. This James Bond is ruthless, tough, and romantic. The Living Daylights, set during the thaw of the cold war, begins with the defection of Russian KGB General Koskov (Jeroen Krabb) and his revelation of a Soviet plot to eliminate Britain's secret agent force. Assigned to eliminate Koskov's Soviet boss (John Rhys-Davies), Bond uncovers a conspiracy involving Koskov and an American arms dealer (Joe Don Baker). Veteran series director John Glen's action scenes have never been better--especially the show-stopping mid-air battle on the net of a speeding cargo plane--and he returns the series to the smart, rough, high-energy adventures that made the Bond reputation. --Sean Axmaker

A View to a Kill: Roger Moore's last outing as James Bond is evidence enough that it was time to pass the torch to another actor. Beset by crummy action (an out-of-control fire engine?) and featuring a fading Moore still trying to prop up his mannered idea of style, the film is largely interesting for Christopher Walken's quirky performance as a sort-of supervillain who wants to take out California's Silicon Valley. Grace Jones has a spookily interesting presence as a lethal associate of Walken's (and who, in the best Bond tradition, has sex with 007 before trying to kill him later), and Patrick Macnee (Steed!) has a warm if brief bit. Even directed by John Glen, who brought some crackle to the Moore years in the Bond franchise, this is a very slight effort. -- Tom Keogh

Thunderball: James Bond's fourth adventure takes him to the Bahamas, where a NATO warplane with a nuclear payload has disappeared into the sea. Bond (Sean Connery) travels from a tiny health spa (where he tangles with a mechanized masseuse run amuck) to the casinos of Nassau and soon picks up the trail of SPECTRE's number-two man, Emilio Largo (Adolfo Celi), and his beautiful mistress, Domino (Claudine Auger), whom Bond soon seduces to his side. Equipped with more gadgets than ever, 007 escapes an ambush with a personal-size jet pack and takes to the water as he searches for the undersea plane, battles Largo's pet sharks, and finally leads the battle against Largo's scuba-equipped henchmen in a spectacular underwater climax. Die Another Day: The 20th James Bond adventure, Die Another Day succeeds on three important fronts: it avoids comparison to Austin Powers by keeping its cheesy humor in check, allows Halle Berry to be sexy and worthy of a spinoff franchise, and keeps pace with the technical wizardry that modern action films demand. Pierce Brosnan is paired with American agent Jinx (Berry) in chasing a genetically altered North Korean villain (Rick Yune) armed with a satellite capable of destroying just about anything. John Cleese and Judi Dench reprise their recurring roles (as "Q" and "M," respectively); they're accompanied by weapons-laden sports cars, a hokey cameo by Madonna (who sings the techno-pulsed theme song), and enough double-entendres to keep Bond-philes adequately shaken and stirred. The Spy Who Loved Me: The best of the James Bond adventures starring Roger Moore as tuxedoed Agent 007, this globe-trotting thriller introduced the steel-toothed Jaws (played by seven-foot-two-inch-tall actor Richard Kiel) as one of the most memorable and indestructible Bond villains. Jaws is so tenacious, in fact, that Moore looks genuinely frightened, and that adds to the abundant fun. This time Bond teams up with yet another lovely Russian agent (Barbara Bach) to track a pair of nuclear submarines that the nefarious Stromberg (Curt Jürgens) plans to use in his plot to start World War III. The Spy Who Loved Me is a galaxy away from the suave Sean Connery exploits of the 1960s, but the film works perfectly as grandiose entertainment. From cavernous undersea lairs to the vast horizons of Egypt, this Bond thriller keeps its tongue firmly in cheek with a plot tailor-made for daredevil escapism. --Jeff Shannon

License to Kill: Timothy Dalton's second and last shot at playing James Bond isn't nearly as much fun as his debut, two years earlier, in the 1987 The Living Daylights. This time Bond gets mad after a close friend (David Hedison) from the intelligence sector is assassinated on his wedding day, and 007 goes undercover to link the murder to an international drug cartel. Robert Davi makes an interesting adversary, but as with most of the Bond films in the '70s, '80s, and '90s--and especially since the end of the cold war--one has to wonder why we should still care about these lesser villains and their unimaginative crimes. Still, Dalton did manage in his short time with the character to make 007 his own, which neither Roger Moore did nor Pierce Brosnan did. --Tom Keogh

Goldeneye: The 18th James Bond adventure was a runaway box-office success when released in 1995, thanks to the arrival of Pierce Brosnan as the fifth actor (following the departure of Timothy Dalton) to play the suave, danger-loving Agent 007. This James Bond is a bit more vulnerable and psychologically complex--and just a shade more politically correct--but he's still a formally attired playboy at heart, with a lovely Russian beauty (Izabella Scorupco) as his sexy ally against a cadre of renegade Russians bent on--what else?--global domination. All in all, this action-packed Bond adventure provided a much-needed boost the long-running movie series, revitalizing the 007 franchise for the turn of the millennium. -- Jeff Shannon

Live and Let Die: Roger Moore was introduced as James Bond in this 1973 action movie featuring secret agent 007. This film marks a deviation from the more character-driven stories of the Connery years, a deliberate shift to plastic action (multiple chases, bravura stunts) that made the franchise more of a comic book or machine. If that's not depressing enough, there's even a good British director on board, Guy Hamilton (Force 10 from Navarone). The story finds Bond taking on an international drug dealer (Yaphet Kotto), and while that may be superficially relevant, it isn't exactly the same as fighting supervillains on the order of Goldfinger. --Tom Keogh

The non-stop action includes automobile chases, thrilling underwater battles, and even a breathtaking tour over razor-sharp coral reefs. From Russia with Love: Directed with consummate skill by Terence Young, the second James Bond spy thriller is considered by many fans to be the best of them all. Certainly Sean Connery was never better as the dashing Agent 007, whose latest mission takes him to Istanbul to retrieve a top-secret Russian decoding machine. His efforts are thwarted when he gets romantically distracted by a sexy Russian double agent (Daniela Bianchi), and is tracked by a lovely assassin (Lotte Lenya) with switchblade shoes, and by a crazed killer (Robert Shaw), who clashes with Bond during the film's dazzling climax aboard the Orient Express. On Her Majesty's Secret Service: Australian model George Lazenby took up the mantle of the world's most suave secret agent when Sean Connery retired as James Bond (although Connery returned in Diamonds Are Forever before leaving the role to Roger Moore). In On Her Majesty's Secret Service, 007 leaves the Service to privately pursue his SPECTRE nemesis Blofeld (played this time by Telly Savalas), whose latest master plan involves a threat to the world's crops by agricultural sterilization. Lazenby hasn't the intensity of Connery but he has fun with his quips and even lampoons the Bond image in a playful pre-credits sequence. Former editor Peter Hunt makes a strong directorial debut, deftly handling the elaborate action sequences with a kinetic finesse. --Sean Axmaker

Dr. No: Released in 1962, this first James Bond movie remains one of the best, and serves as an entertaining reminder that the Bond series began (in keeping with Ian Fleming's novels) with a surprising lack of gadgetry and big-budget fireworks. In his first adventure James Bond is called to Jamaica where a colleague and secretary have been mysteriously killed. With an American CIA agent (Jack Lord, pre-Hawaii Five-O), they discover that the nefarious Dr. No (Joseph Wiseman) is scheming to blackmail the U.S. government with a device capable of deflecting and destroying U.S. rockets launched from Cape Canaveral. Of course, Bond takes time off from his exploits to enjoy the company of a few gorgeous women, including the bikini-clad Ursula Andress. This is Bond at his purest, kicking off a series of movies that shows no sign of slowing down. --Jeff Shannon

You Only Live Twice: The film boasts the best of the Bond title songs (this one sung on a dreamy track by Nancy Sinatra), but the movie itself is one of the weaker ones of the Sean Connery phase of the 007 franchise. The story concerns an effort by the evil organization SPECTRE to start a world war, but the not-so-super villain behind the plot is the awfully civilized Donald Pleasence. The thin script is by Roald Dahl (shouldn't we have expected a better Bond nemesis from the creator of mad genius Willy Wonka?), and direction is by British veteran Lewis Gilbert (Alfie). But the movie can't hold a candle to Dr. No, From Russia with Love, or Goldfinger. --Tom Keogh

Octopussy: Roger Moore was nearing the end of his reign as James Bond when he made Octopussy, and he looks a little worn out. But the movie itself infuses some new blood into the old franchise, with a frisky pace and a pair of sturdy villains. Maud Adams--who'd also been in the Bond outing The Man with the Golden Gun--plays the improbably named Octopussy, while old smoothie Louis Jourdan is her crafty partner in crime. Two Bond films were actually released in 1983 within a few months of each other, as Octopussy was followed by Sean Connery's comeback in Never Say Never Again. The success of both pictures proved that there was still plenty of mileage left in the old license to kill, though Moore had one more workout--A View to a Kill--before hanging it up. And that title? The franchise had already used up the titles to Ian Fleming's novels, so Octopussy was taken from a lesser-known Fleming short story. -- Robert Horton

Tomorrow Never Dies: Pierce Brosnan returns for his second stint as James Bond (after GoldenEye), and he's doing it in high style with an invigorating cast of costars. It's only appropriate that a Bond film from 1997 would find Agent 007 pitted against a media mogul (Jonathan Pryce) who's going to start a global war (beginning with stolen nuclear missiles aimed at China) to create attention-grabbing headlines for his latest multimedia news channel. It's the information age run amok, and Bond must team up with a lovely and lethal agent from the Chinese External Security Force (played by Honk Kong action star Michelle Yeoh) to foil the madman's plot of global domination. Luckily for Bond, the villain's wife (Teri Hatcher) is one of his former lovers and 007 finds ample opportunity to exploit the connection. Armed with the usual array of gadgets (including a remote-controlled BMW), Brosnan settles into his role with acceptable flair, and the dynamic Yeoh provides a perfect balance to the sexism that once threatened to turn Bond into a politically incorrect anachronism. He's still Bond, to be sure, but he's saving the world with a bit more sophisticated finesse. --Jeff Shannon

Moonraker: This was the first James Bond adventure produced after the success of Star Wars, so it jumped on the sci-fi bandwagon by combining the suave appeal of Agent 007 (once again played by Roger Moore) with enough high-tech hardware and special effects to make Luke Skywalker want to join Her Majesty's Secret Service. This time Bond is up against a criminal industrialist named Drax (Michel Lonsdale) who wants to control the world from his orbiting space station. Bond thwarts this maniacal Neo-Hitler's scheme with the help of a beautiful, sleek-figured scientist (played by Lois Chiles with all the vitality of a department-store mannequin). Despite Moore's passive performance (which Pauline Kael described as "like an office manager who is turning into dead wood but hanging on to collect his pension"), Moonraker had no problem attracting an appreciative audience, and there are even a few renegade Bond-philes who consider it one of their favorites. --Sean Axmaker

The movies look great and it is fabulous to watch how the character of Bond and the movies themselves evolve. Great for a film class or just someone who wants a lot of fun action adventure movies around. Plus at Amazon prices, you can't go wrong.

wonderfully restored movies!.......2007-06-27

We bought this set after reading a lot of reviews that said how nice the movies looked (restored). We were pleasantly surprised that the restored movies exceeded our expectation. The movies are very clean and there are absolutely tons of extras on each DVD.

There are only 2 annoying things. 1) they don't come in chronological order. We just rearranged them, but then you can't quite see the entire title from inside the box. 2) the slim cases were cheaply made. For the price it seems like they should be a little more sturdy.

Because of the slim cases, they don't take up very much room (for 20 DVD's plus extras). We are very happy with the set.

Will Farrell followed up his star-making vehicle Elf, which matched his fine-tuned comic obliviousness to a sweet sincerity, with a more arrogant variation on the same character: Ron Burgundy, a macho, narcissistic news anchor from the 1970s. Along with his news posse--roving reporter Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd, Clueless), sports guy Champ Kind (David Koechner), and dim-bulb weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve Carell, Bruce Almighty)--Burgundy rules the roost in San Diego, fawned upon by groupies and supported by a weary producer (Fred Willard, Best In Show) who tolerates Burgundy's ego because of good ratings. But when Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate, View from the Top) arrives with ambitions to become an anchor herself, she threatens the male-dominated newsroom. Anchorman has plenty of funny material, but it's as if Farrell couldn't decide what he really wanted to mock, and so took smart-ass cracks at everything in sight. Ferrell's Redemption Complete.......2007-06-30

After the crime against all that is decent otherwise know as Bewitched (Special Edition), I have come back around to giving Will Ferrell movies a chance and I was glad I did so with "Anchorman". What could have been another unmitigated disaster turned out to be a very funny story about 1970's sexism and news teams.

Veronica Corningstone takes a new position with the Channel 4 news team and finds herself surrounding by egotistical male chauvinists. Not that she is any damsel in distress, as she can more than handle her own and she has plenty of ambition to go with it. The love thing between her and the lead anchor, Ron Burgundy, make things all the more interesting.

With cameo parts played by Ben Stiller, Tim Robbins, and a minor role with Vince Vaughn, this movie certainly gave the story a good shot. There is a lot of "silly" humour, but it is all very good. The comedy covers a variety of bases from the purely ridiculous to the situational and more. It is a diverse movie in this sense.

I enjoyed this movie a whole lot, and have seen it a few times now. Although not something you would want to overdo, it is an enjoyable laugh at when "times were changing".

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy

Anchorman is a very funny movie, but it is inconsistent in tone. They do anything for a laugh, and ad libbing was encouraged by director Adam McKay, but it often veers off track, and the story is pretty stupid. It just doesn't make sense, half the time. That being said, it has some of the funniest scenes ever filmed, and I'm sure there were a lot of laughs, on screen and off.

It begins with the following narration, spoken by announcer Bill Lawson: "There was a time, a time before cable. When the local anchorman reigned supreme. When people believed everything they heard on TV. This was an age when only men were allowed to read the news. And in San Diego, one anchorman was more man then the rest. His name was Ron Burgundy. He was like a god walking amongst mere mortals. He had a voice that could make a wolverine purr and suits so fine they made Sinatra look like a hobo. In other words, Ron Burgundy was the balls."

There is the movie in a nutshell. It is very funny in spurts, but spins out of control just as often. The problem is that the funniest parts could also be the out of control ones. Will Ferrell is excellent as Ron Burgundy, all empty headed and puffed up with self importance. There are great scenes of the news team doing the purposeful walk, wearing 70s style suits, it is so right on and true to the period.

Another problem is the theme of a woman breaking into the male dominated world of TV News. It tries to be too PC, and that gets in the way of the comedy. Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate) doesn't know if she wants to play it as a professional or a conniving slattern. Does she loath Ron Burgundy or love him? If she is as intelligent as she appears, then how could she love someone as ignorant as Burgundy? Should the movie mock her, or should it just mock Ron and the other male chauvinists?

I like the part where Ron Burgundy comes home and talks to his dog, Baxter. Also outstanding was the scene where Ron Burgundy jams at a jazz club with his flute. There is a running gag where the other news teams rumble, and one of them gets his arm ripped off. Later, when everyone is trying to cover the Panda being born at the San Diego Zoo, he is shown with one arm. I just wish they could have shown as much care for the other plot lines that led nowhere.

I want to emphasize that I think this is a very funny movie, and I recommend it, but it gets silly at times. There are some very funny people in it. Paul Rudd, David Koechner, Steve Carrell, Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Fred Armisen, Vince Vaughn, Fred Willard, Owen Wilson, and Chris Parnell, as well as co-anchors Will Ferrell and Christina Applegate. Four of them have double L's in their names.

Wake Up Ron Burgundy - you're brilliant.......2007-05-24

Fantastic fun! Loved Anchorman in the cinema (nearly choked to death on my popcorn your know - ah, good times) and the DVD is even better with the additional full length movie 'Wake Up Ron Burgundy'. The extras are great too, especially Ron's ESPN job interview and his MTV Awards interview with JC.
Anchorman is definately in my Top 10 favourites and its keeping some pretty impressive company in there too, I can tell you.
So buy it and laugh your socks off. Just be careful to swallow your popcorn properly young man!

"You have an absolutely breathtaking heiny. I mean, that thing is good. I wanna be friends with it".

Anchorman Ron Burgundy has so many smooth pickup lines in this movie, it's super-hilarious. (Don't try them at home though).
Will Ferrell got the idea for this movie by watching some 70's footage of news coverage. A bunch of dorky white dudes in bad polyester suits, reading the newscast while smoking, drinking, and cussing. It was so unintentionally funny, a movie had to be made.
And this movie is purposely a laugh riot. One of the best recent comedies (which isn't saying much).
Ron is so egotistical and spurts out crazy random things. He and his male coworkers are enraged when the studio decides to bring in a female reporter. This disgust quickly subsides when she is declared "fair game" and they all take a run at her. Whammy! let the games begin...

Anchorman has awesome cameos by Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Owen and Luke Wilson. Tim Robbins, and Jack Black. You can't go wrong.

"So whatd'ya say we grab some chicken, have some sex, you know, see what happens"? Like see this movie!

All About My Mother traces the delicate web of friendship and loss that binds these women together. The movie is dedicated to the actresses of the world, so it's not surprising that all the performances are superb. Roth in particular anchors All About My Mother with compassion and generosity. The Flower of My Secret
Pedro Alomodóvar made this misfired, rambling comedy about a romance novelist (Marisa Paredes) whose crumbling marriage has left her depressed and unable to work. At a low point, she writes a scathing indictment of her own books (which are penned under another name), with no one realizing critic and author are one and the same. Almodóvar ( Law of Desire) has the start of a great idea here, and for once, he's direct about his sympathy for a character. But nothing else about The Flower of My Secret is so clear. Despite its unusual allegiance to the straightforward "women's films" of the 1950s, this movie blows it by becoming needlessly complicated over extraneous junk, forcing one to grope in the dark for Almodóvar's point. -- Tom Keogh

Bad Education
Writer/director Pedro Almodóvar's dark, sexy Hitchcock homage is his best work since his Oscar-winning All About My Mother, and deepened by a sun-dappled sadness. Handsome, enigmatic Ángel (Gael García Bernal) arrives at the Spanish movie offices of director Enrique Goded (Fele Martinez) and happily proclaims that he's actually Enrique's long-lost school chum Ignacio--an announcement that is both less than convincing and more than it seems. A novice actor, Ángel pitches a semi-autobiographical screenplay in which he's determined to star, a revenge-laden reflection of the doomed love he and Enrique shared as boys before a pedophile priest cruelly intervened. I was familiar with the movies. They were part of a Retrospective about 6 yrs. ago at the Museum of the Moving Image. The box set is great!! The layout is fabulous. I had all the other movies except Matador. This is a must have for any Pedro fan. It is only missing High Heels, one of Pedro's best.

I am a big fan of director Pedro Almodovar's films and this collection of 8 of his best movies is a must-have. These timeless movies are presented in a nice, space-saving box. I recommend it wholeheartedly to any fan of Almodovar.

Brilliant fimmaking, enormous vairety, lovely transfers. The material is difficult ot see. If you didn't catch these things when they were first released, you are up the creek. The theatrical reissue that was meant to promote the video release didn't last long enough for me to see but one of them. The dvds of most are out print, but I had LIVE FLESH, TALK TO HER and BAD EDUCATION on dvd and WOMEN ON THE VERGE on laser disc. But still, I had to have the set. Really terrific. got a good price at amazon Marketplace and i'm totlaly satisfied.

You have to appreciate the improbable and ridiculous.......2007-05-01

A pretty good collection, if strangely inclusive of BAD EDUCATION, a recent film, with the older batch of films, mainly of 1980s. This could be because LAW OF DESIRE's film director character is a forerunner of the film director in the later film. The problem is in reviewing the collection or the individual films. For instance, there are 3 documentaries on the filmmaker included on an extra disk. Otherwise the movies are presented w/English subtitle options but no extras, except for one of them.

Almodovar's style as a whole is for wildly improbable plots involving situations and characters that run of the mill people would never experience. American film reviewers love this, as they love French farce, and so give these films a free pass, awarding a blue ribbon. The true question is whether the same films would be as highly reviewed if the identical screenplay were presented as a solely American product.

Almodovar's film staples include (on the 8 films represented in this package): (1) Penelope Cruz going into labor (ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER; LIVE FLESH). (2) The homely guy is always slick, a real winner, at least professionally, and sometimes a film director (BAD EDUCATION; LAW OF DESIRE). (3) There's always strained theatrical moments, such as presentations of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, that take up much screen time, and often are comical without being meant to be. Ditto a usage of older films that his characters seem to be greatly influenced by. (4) The cute guy, who in real life would probably be greatly sought after as a romantic partner, is always a loser who becomes obsessed with another person or thing to the detriment of everything else (LIVE FLESH; LAW OF DESIRE; BAD EDUCATION). (5) Usage of FF nudity is primarily male. (6) Everyone in the world (or at least Spain) is personally acquainted with a transexual or transvestite.

Briefly, on the films themselves, ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER is a tear-jerker that goes to extremes and unfortunately goes on way too long. Good acting, but improbable characters and their life histories make this film an experience to endure.

BAD EDUCATION has the superlative Gael Garcia Bernal in it, and is also a blatant indictment of the Catholic Church's methods. The twists and turns in the plot make it worthwhile as well as uniformly good performances. Unusual film from this director, who usually focusses more on the women. For those squeamish of homosexual content, this film is not nearly as explicit as LAW OF DESIRE.

LAW OF DESIRE has the young Antonio Banderas seducing/seduced by a film director whom he is obsessed with. There is FF nudity from Banderas and others. Rather interesting, not quite a thriller, but an ending that brings the story-line full circle in a way. Rather a moral on how what you're looking for may be staring you in the face but you have to be prepared to take it. I found the plot weak whenever it got into the ancillary characters, as they were unnecessary to the main plot but presumably there to soften the main character of the film director.

LIVE FLESH is an unbelievable situation of a young man from prison subsequently having affairs with two police officers' (one of whom he'd shot and crippled) wives. Unfortunately this plot was wholly predictable though improbable. Too many cliches of drunken criminal cop abusing wife, etc. At times seems it was meant to be a music video, and should have been, with pop songs used as narrative.

TALK TO HER, generally considered one of the more popular Almodovar films, and a quiet, sincere character piece. I could easily have lived without the scene of the shrunken man interacting with a woman's nude body; that was outrageous for the fun of it, I guess. But from what appeared to be a would-be homosexual union between two men veered in another direction that also made the ending quite believable. It set up cliches only to knock them down.

WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN has provided me an obsession with gazpacho that has haunted me to this day. I didn't watch it again via this collection, but realized I have no memories of the film from first seeing it, except that it was fun; so that tells me nothing of the plot is essential, and I probably didn't identify with the characters.

THE FLOWER OF MY SECRET is weird, as it takes off from the scenario of ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER, which isn't a good thing. It's about a writer's crisis, this time her own self-conceit being played out on a public stage, as she is both a well known author but also writes under a pseudonyn attacking her own work. Meanwhile, her marriage is falling apart. So she's really a woman having an identity crisis, as an artist, and as a woman. Maybe it takes a person who's undergone an identity crisis to understand this one.

MATADOR can be summed as "Can two serial killers find happiness in death with each other?" Add Banderas as a sexually confused young man who appears to have occasional perfect-radar psychic abilities and a young woman who's been sexually assaulted three times and is quite casual about it, and a closeted gay detective, and a psychiatrist who wants to seduce basically anybody, and you pretty much have a would-be psychology thriller very confused about what's going on. The film has the confusion one would expect from a wholly improvisational piece, like the director was making it up as they went along in the filming. I am blinded by the idea any of these characters would even exist in real life, except for the detective, so find it amazing they'd actually be stumbling into each other's orbit. A fun movie to spend some time on, as it is an entertaining mix of psychological motivations and I guess you can breathe easy nobody like this lives on your block.

I have been an Amoldovar fan for more than twenty years (at least). I'm glad that he's gotten more American recognition now, but his older movies are still my favorites ( and so hard to find not that I'm no longer in a big city with great art and foreign film theaters. I'm so glad this incredible collection is finally available! (Not to mention that Matador and Law of Desire are some of the best acting Banderas has ever done!)

This as good as it gets in modern DVD concerts, and it's getting there with one of the classic hard rock/metal bands in history. The video and sound is incredible, a real treat on my simple 5.1 system with HiDef monitor.

For a bunch of old farts, DP still kicks some serius arse. I think Ian Gillan even blows a nut trying to sing Highway Star (and quickly runs back stage to re-group during the following instrumental). The band is spot on, all night, as Gillan joins mainstays Roger Glover, and Ian Paice, in addition to Don Airy on Keyboards and Steve Morse keeping the Blackmore feel alive.

Excellent video editing, no flashing MTV 2-second bull crap here. The camera's pointing where it should, especially during solos, and stays there. The band is having fun, it's obvious throughout the concert, and you'll have fun following along with a bunch of old geezers rocking out to your heart's delight.

don't bother..........2007-06-15

Deep Purple Stopped growing and stretching as a band shortly after Purpendicular. I kept buying, because it was almost habit-like to buy the latest DP product. No longer. As musicians, all the members shine. Especially Paice & Glover. Morse has begun to bore me. Airey is a wonder on the keyboards, but really adds nothing to the band. Together, as a band, there is no longer any spark or passion in the playing. Just a simple going through the motions play it safe feel to the performance. Even the ROTD material, which sounds and feels better than on the studio recording, is nothing to get excited over.
Deep Purple has been a part of my life since I first heard Pictures of Home from the Machine Head album. I've enjoyed their music through the various Marks, including the Joe Lynn Turner line-up. But no more. I will not let them collect royalties from my purchase. There's just nothing there any more...

I'll miss them...

good release, but one thing to nitpick........2007-06-15

Excellent 2 DVD release, but...for whatever reason, "Perfect Strangers" is omitted from the Montreux set! The band played it, but it's not on the DVD or the companion CD release. Why this happened is a mystery to me. It's a pleasant surprise to have the London Hard Rock Cafe set included here. A few of the tracks were issued on the Rapture of the Deep Special Edition CD, but I didn't realize the show had been filmed. Well worth the buy, and in my opinion, a better one than Montreux 1996, which was a bit of a truncated performance (11 songs, barely an hour and twenty).

4.5 stars for terrific Deep Purple concert DVD.......2007-06-13

OK. It's not Deep Purple live 1972, but the band still rocks here. This DVD was filmed and recorded very well. Sound is full and fat, with nice balance between instruments. The camera crew and, later, DVD editors, knew what they were doing. When Glover has a bass solo or even a snazzy bass run, it's caught by the cameras. Same for Morse on guitar, Paice on drums, and Airey on keys/Hammond. Lots of nice closeups of the hands of Morse and Glover (musicians will rejoice!). A camera catches Paice drop a stick over the high-hat early in the set, and Paice, always the pro, quickly grabs another stick from below without missing a beat. Airey sounds good on keys. Long-time DP fans will probalby wish it was Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore in the band still, but the current DP still is a great band. Ian Gillan, who looks mysteriously more and more like actor Patrick Duffy these days, is in pretty good voice. He also has fun, moving from one side of the stage to the other, and all around. The guys look like they're having a really good time. Glover makes a few "rock guitar faces" without ever slipping into cheesy territory. Makes me want to go see them this summer in St.Louis, even though I'm broke. Ha.

The older classics are always favorites, but "Wrong Man" on this DVD rocks. It's a great version and makes me appreciate Deep Purple's recent work, too. Same for "Rapture of the Deep"'s title cut, also heard and seen in this film. Enjoy!

Sadly dated, get the CD.......2007-05-12

I vaguely recall bits and pieces of video from my childhood, but it was still a bit of a shock when I got the DVD. The CD seems unfortunately timeless, but the DVD looks very very dated. Some of the animations (e.g. "Atalanta" and "William's Doll") aren't too bad, but the rest is too 70s. Get the CD instead, you'll be much happier.

Stands the test of time.......2007-03-24

Kids loved this. Girls 7 (first grade) and 5 (pre k) and son 2 yrs. We moved from a very relaxed, well funded, full of arts school district to across the world, heavily congested, low funded little to standard art school district. Found the transition from fun sunny friends to competitive relatively unhappy community tough. This video really helped my 7 year old see her diversity in a soft and soothing way, believe it helped her move. Kids loved it for the entertainment value too. I swear I heard their brains blooming open with possibilities when they watched this. I loved the retro revisiting my childhood of it. It was a lot shorter than I remember it, which is handy for rewatching.

I knew this stuff from the album, but hadn't ever seen the TV show. It is dated...cartoon unicorns flying off a carousel in Central Park. And unfortunately the video quality was obviously mediocre to start with. But it is fun, and the humorous parts are enduring. The songs are great too, as you'd remember if you were young when this came out...

I left my 2 yr old this morning on the couch watching the puppet babies (Mel Brooks and Marlo T) doing the I AM A BOY/GIRL thing--she had a big smile on her face..

It is so nice to hear this music again! My daughter enjoys it immensely and it'll be so nice to both be able to be nostalgic about it someday. I love that they're putting these shows from my youth onto DVD so she can enjoy them also.

Sure, it's dated, and not a lot of kids know who Rosie Greer is. But, if you don't love it for the simple childhood "niceness" factor, rent it for the kitsch factor -- a young Michael Jackson is a hoot!

Like any good brand, the Rolling Stones know to preserve the formula even when updating the package, and this long-form concert video underscores that market strategy. As with each of their tours since the early '80s, the quartet, augmented by a discreet auxiliary of backup musicians, gives the fans new eye candy while dishing up a familiar set list spiked with Mick Jagger's lip-smacking vocals and Keith Richards's signature guitar riffs. The visual twists are at once spectacular and conservative: a cyclopean main stage design with massive pillars (presumably the Babylonian connection), a vast oval video screen (shades of Big Brother), and a hydraulic bridge enabling a midconcert sortie into the audience, with the Stones playing a more stripped-down, intimate set on a small satellite stage.

That huge physical setting doubtless made the live shows eye-filling rock spectacles, but the video crew necessarily accepts the limitations of the small screen, focusing more on close-ups of the band, rapid cuts, and racing, hand-held tracking shots to convey excitement while keeping the viewer close to the action. The evening's repertoire sticks to the band's most familiar hits, and if the Glimmer Twins occasionally slip their masks to let the routine show, the real wonder is how effectively they keep the playing focused. During the first half of the program, the band's newest songs (especially "Saint of Me" and "Out of Control") elicit conspicuously higher energy from the band, if not the audience. But just as the show seems doomed to a certain anomie, the escape onto the smaller, no-frills stage pumps up players and crowd alike, particularly when they launch into "Like a Rolling Stone," a cover that winds up sounding like a great idea too long deferred. --Sam Sutherland

This is by far the best concert video I own. The Stones were on top of their game at this St. Louis concert, soulful, bluesy, and rocking. The cameras stay on the band the whole time, unlike many current concert videos that seem to think the viewer wants to watch the audience. The sound is CD quality, the picture and color is vivid, the editing is tight. The highlight for me is Keith Richards' "I Wanna Hold You" and some incredible versions of many classics. The songs from the Bridges to Babylon album are excellent and it is funny how quickly some of them faded from the permanent repertoire. The fact of the matter is the Stones have enough excellent songs to do ten different concerts.

I highly recommend this DVD. It is superior to the Four Flicks, and a lot less expensive. Five Stars.

If you must buy one Rolling Stones DVD concert...you must choose this one; no doubts about that. Great artists performance and just hits on this. I'm a new Rolling Stones fan just because this DVD. Great value!

Here you'll find Mick, Keith and the boys together with some "cool friends" doing what they do best. ROCK & ROLL!

They have the lovely & talented Lisa Fischer on backup vocals. She really used her "assets talents," all of them. Her voice hits all of those amazing notes that few singers will ever hope aproach.

The "really cool" Joshua Redmond joins in with his saxophone.

Lets not forget the inovative theatrics that we've come to expect from the Stones. The never disapoint me in that area. In this film they do actually cross "a bridge" to Babylon.

If you love the Stones and you love seeing them live or wish you could, this is a great way to see them!

Captures high energy and party atmosphere........2006-01-01

This solid show has some great moments. The 10 minute Miss You version here is the best available, with the whole band acting like they never want it to end. Lisa Fischer, the awesome support singer, is in rare form as she and Mick bump and grind all over the stage. She gets in everybody's business on this one. Surprisingly, Miss You doesn't appear on Four Flicks. Neither does Its Only Rock and Roll, which is a highlight from the B-stage here. Also is a terrific Wild Horses duet with Dave Matthews and Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone-performed better here than on Stripped. Another highlight is Keith's I wanna Hold You, from Undercover. The sound is a slight step down from Four Flicks, but certainly great for when it was released. At the end we get a blazing Juming Jack Flash with Mick sporting cool shades and Keith and Ronnie weaving in and out like they're trying to outdo themselves. Lots of Fun!

I'm a Gong Li fan, so naturally I'm watching all of her movies. Although I've enjoyed some of her other ones more (like "Zhou Yu's Train"), I enjoyed this one more than some others as well (like "The Story of Qiu Ju" and "Ju Dou"). It educates the viewer about several decades of Chinese history while focusing on one family's experiences through life. The viewer can either relate to the characters as husband & wife, and/or mother & father, and/or children & siblings. The viewer may also relate to some of the characteristics/emotions on display--like one's submissions to and obliviousness during addiction, one's willingness to sacrifice for others, one's guilt for not being able to do better by your family or for your family, one's sorrow after another's death...the list goes on. Overall, it's a good movie, and I'd watch it again.

The movie tells a tale of a family living through troubled times, during the communist uprising in mid 20th century China. To Live, literally expresses every human emotion known to man. It can and will, touch your heart one moment and drown it the next. But honestly, I couldn't relate to the characters. It lacked the necessities for me to empathize with the people in the film. I saw the drama, but I didn't feel it. I won't go as far as to say the film sucked, because it didn't. It was good, but not a masterpiece. The first 30 min were far from captivating, I wasn't drawn in one bit. When the movie grabbed me, I'd literally blink, and I was already waiting for the tempo to pick up again. I'm 20/m, open-minded, but this film just didn't do for me. If you buy it, judge it for yourself and post a review for future audiences.

If you want to buy a MASTERPIECE of a foreign film, buy Tae Guk Gi: Brotherhood of War. That movie will steal your heart and i guarantee you won't be able to tear away from it.. and YOU WILL cry.

A Decent Film In Storytelling: Worth A Look!.......2007-01-07

"To Live," does not hold the same appeal for me as it once did in the past. However, I do recommend viewers to at least take a look at this film. The films narrative deals with the lives of Fugui and Jiazhen, a husband and wife with two children, as well as Fugui's mother. The time period is from the 1940s up to the 1980s. Because Fugui has a gambling problem the family loses everything: house and possessions, which splits the family apart. It is a time when the Chinese Nationalist's and Communist's are battling for control of China. Further, the film deals with the social upheaval that is afffecting the lives of many Chinese. Although the film never criticizes the changes incurred by Mao Tse Tung, just the view of the how people's lives were affected accomplishes this task very well.

And although this film does not look deeply enough at the changes taking place in China in the chaotic 40s, 50s, and 60s with Mao's reforms and its affects on the people; I don't think that this is what the director had in mind. Especially regarding the films main protagonists. On later viewings I realized that there was much missing in the film which could have made this a truly great film. As the viewer, one witnesses the changes occuring in China, but the real horror of Mao's reforms are put on the backburner. There is social upheaval occuring, but it appears tame in comparison to actual events. However, Fugui and his pregnant wife are the films main protagonists, and the film is about their life in this new China. With poverty now a way of life, Fugui decides to work at a puppet troupe. After the birth of their first child [a son] Jiazhen returns to Fugui, however, civil war has broken out causing Fugui to leave for the fight. The rise of Mao changes everything for these two individuals in the films narrative.

And even though they have suffered [as many other did too] they never complain. The film never throws Mao at the viewer, but he is left in the background of the film. However, this was a very clever use of directing in order to tell the story of these two individuals. This is a decent film of human tragedy, which I only feel could have been so much more. I recommend the film to those viewers [rent it first] who are not familiar with this period in Chinese history. This is not a propaganda film, but a film about those caught in the unheaval of turbulent times. Recommended. [Stars: 4.5]

One of Gong Li's Best.......2006-11-19

I must admit, I didn't expect too much from this movie when I bought it, despite the good reviews. To me, the movie starts off rather slow as well (and kind of comedic) with the centerpiece of the story being the gambling.

It doesn't take long for the story to really take shape and unfold into one of the best movies I have ever seen. Gong Li is amazing.

You won't regret buying this.

This film is amazing. The story is strong and gets its point across like no other I have ever seen. It shows the negative aspects of the communist regime without getting preachy and without losing the positive aspect, therefore making sure the story is not one sided. Please take note: this is an extremely sad movie. If you cry easily, stay away. I loved it. The acting is fantastic, especially Gong Li, who stuns with her emotion, but that is always a given with her. The director, Zhang Yimou, is truly a genius. He makes this story heartbreaking and pointed. I can see that this title is not available except by marketplace but trust me when I say that it is worth the price. It's fantastic.

"The Lizzie McGuire Movie" is really good! Lizzie is mistaken for a famous singer, Isabella, who looks alot like her, except for their hair color (Lizzie's is blond, while Isabella's is brunette). This means that right after Lizzie makes a wish, tossing a coin into a fountain, the fun begins when she goes from a regular (junior) high school student to a popular singer! You'll love her song, "What Dreams are Made of!" This movie's as good as:

* "The Cheetah Girls 2"

* "Bratz: Genie Magic"

* "High School Musical"

* "Grease"

* and "A Hard Day's Night!"

Buy this for your daughter's/sister's/niece's/stepsister's birthday! She'll love it!

I really enjoyed the Lizzie McGuire movie. It was light and entertaining.
But I don't know if I would want my daughter to watch it because it's based on deception and I am really concerned about her not learning the wrong thing.

Lizzie is pretending to get sick so she could sneak out and do other things. But for those who already know right from wrong and won't be convinced that lying is ok based on this movie, it's entertaining.

Parents, Think Twice!.......2007-01-23

The only thought in my mind throughout this whole movie was the Natalie Holloway case, about the girl last summer that went on that school trip, went off with a boy and disappeared. In this movie, Hilary Duff's character is on a school trip to Rome, meets a guy there and then fakes sick to get away from the school group to follow this guy around Rome. I felt so bad that Disney had made this movie showing a young girl going off on her own with a boy she did not know on a school trip because it rang so close to home from that tragic dissappearance of Natalie Holloway. In this movie the only repurcussions the character gets for doing such completely unsafe acts was that she was grounded..and they didn't even show that part. Young girls are very impressionable and will jsut see the glamour in the movie. Hopefully they will be brough up by good parents that will teach them right to know better than to go off with a stranger in a strange place.

By far the best GD cronicle that I have seen. The energy level of their play was certainly at a peak here. I was happy to see that a release of this quality had a playlist that included some of their lesser known works.

GD Best in Show of the live DVD's.......2007-01-29

I "got on the bus" on the 12/31/82 show, and in my opinion, if you want to know what the fuss was all about with this band you should pick up this DVD and the "Dozin' at the Knick" CD. The stages of the Grateful Dead can best be measured by the tenure of the keyboard players, giving Brent two periods (early and late). "Late Brent" is defined as the period where he was given a chance to lead once or twice a show, as opposed to "Early Brent" where it was more like once or twice a month. "Late Brent" is where the Dead finally got it all together as a professional act, and you get the benefit of all that in this DVD:

+ Equipment and sound at the show is clean, bugfree, and solid
+ Camera and recording chops are practiced and at their best
+ This particular DVD comes at a point in the technology where they've figured that out too. 5.1 sound is clean and strong... Phil (bass) is ALL THERE and the "rain" sound effects during "Looks Like Rain" come from behind you!
