Editorial Review:
Amazon.com
As directed by Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast) and dimly lit by cinematographer Harris Savides, Birth is a melancholy chamber piece, its pensive mood sustained by nearly sub-sonic nuances in a fine, thematically developed score by Alexandre Desplat. All of these fine qualities are well-matched by the somber performance of Nicole Kidman, playing a still-grieving widow of 10 years, about to remarry when a 10-year-old boy (Cameron Bright) arrives to announce that he is her dead husband, reincarnated and full of convincing answers to personal marital questions. Rather than go for Sixth Sense-like chills and thrills, Glazer approaches Birth as a conundrum with no clear-cut solution, and his directorial style is so subdued, so deliberately understated, that most of the story's dramatic impact is sacrificed to oppressively dour atmosphere. If it doesn't lull you to sleep, Birth might hold your attention as a strange, subtle thriller in miniature scale. With its delicate, mature approach to the processes of grieving and recovery, however, Birth rewards attentive viewers attuned to the film's ultra-low-key wavelength, and it's guaranteed to provoke interesting post-movie discussions. Lauren Bacall, Danny Huston, Anne Heche, and Arliss Howard lead an esteemed supporting cast. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic!.......2007-07-03
I'm a new mom of four days and I purchased this DVD for myself 3 weeks ago after hearing a little about it from a friend. Boy am I impressed! The information given is very simple and easy to follow. I was instantly able to recognize Mason's different cries and take appropriate action. Otherwise I would probably be tearing my hair out trying to figure out that he needed to eat yet again after just finishing a meal. Worth every penny and then some.
This DVD Rocks!.......2007-06-20
I bought this DVD for my best friend Kelly who just had her first baby and she has said "thank you" about a million times. Her husband, who was skeptical, has become a big fan too. She said it took listening and watching the DVD just a few times and now she knows exactly what her new baby girl needs with every cry. Why didn't this come out sooner? I'm looking forward to having this DVD for my first baby soon!
Unique explanation of different cries.......2007-06-11
Having bought this hasn't changed my life but it has definately given me a different perspective to my daughter's different cries. For the most part I am able to tell what she wants but it is still sometimes difficult to distinguish between the cries -even after reviewing the DVD. It is a great DVD and aside from distinguishing what the cries mean, Dunstan does a wonderful job offering different techniques to help solve what is bothering your baby - from different burping methods to various feeding positions. This is very helpful and overall I do recommend the DVD!
Not just for parents.......2007-06-07
I bought this as a gift for my sister before her first baby but I have found it also helps me with my babysitting duties. I don't have kids of my own and was worried that my lack of experience might mean that I didn't feel confident enough to play a large part in this baby's life. Thanks to this I don't feel like I am getting it all wrong. I would recommend the system not only to new mothers but to extended family as well.
Pricey for what you get - In any language........2007-06-05
I saw a TV broadcast and thought, "Gotta have it." My wife and I just had our first, so I thought it would be a good idea. It seems to be useful so far, and Dunstan is good at what she does. However,I was rather disappointed to find a combined content total (lessons 1&2) of barely 30 minutes (on two DVD's! wasteful), covering only five 'words'.
These 15 minute lessons are followed by extensive praise in the form of testimonials, so called 'Bonus Features'. These run longer than the lessons. I don't understand, if I'm at home watching the DVD I've already bought the item, so why sell it to me?
The content is quality - the item is 20% overpriced.

Something the Lord Made recounts the relationship between Dr. Alfred Blalock (Alan Rickman) and Vivian Thomas (Mos Def). It begins in 1930s Nashville when imperious cardiac surgeon Blalock hires Thomas, an African American carpenter, as his janitor. When the latter reveals a passion for medicine and facility with surgical instruments, Blalock promotes him to lab tech. Thomas isn't given a raise, works side jobs to make ends meet, and is expected to be grateful. Along the way, he follows Blalock from Vanderbilt to Johns Hopkins, where they save thousands of lives through their pioneering work, but will Thomas ever get any credit? The film provides a satisfying answer to that question. Joseph Sargent (A Lesson Before Dying) directs with subtlety and intelligence, while Rickman and Mos Def are in top form, often underplaying where most actors would do otherwise. Something the Lord Made won the 2004 Emmy for outstanding made-for-TV movie. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
(Drama) Something the Lord Made tells the emotional true story of two men who defied the rules of their time to launch a medical revolution, set against the backdrop of the Jim Crow south. Working in 1940s Baltimore on an unprecedented technique for performing heart surgery on "blue babies," Dr. Alfred Blalock (Alan Rickman) and lab technician Vivien Thomas (Mos Def) form an impressive team. As Blalock and Thomas invent a new field of medicine, saving thousands of lives in the process, social pressures threaten to undermine their collaboration and tear their friendship apart.

Excellent movie!.......2007-07-03
This movie is a must see. It will keep your interest throughout. There are no dull moments. I didn't realize that Mos Def is such a wonderful actor.
The Birth of Open Heart Surgery.......2007-06-27
Before (or after) you see this incredible video, you might want to read the book, "Partners Of The Heart" written by Dr. Vivian Thomas,an account of his role in pioneering open heart surgery. It's funny to see a young Dr. Denton Cooley as a resident observing and learning. This is a heart wrenching story of a man with talent beyond comprehension who never had a chance to actually attend medical school - simply because of his race. Even if you are not entrenched in the medical field you will appreciate this movie. The acting is superb, and it is said Mos Def does an outstanding job of portraying Dr. Thomas.
A story about a miraculous surgery that saves lives........2007-06-26
Born in 1987, I never knew the story about the surgery that saved my life. I was born a "blue baby", yet today I am still alive. Two amazing figures in the history of medicine made this all possible.
"Something the Lord Made" is a powerful story about two colleagues of different backgrounds who strive to save babies with a congential deformity. The movie shows great social inequality as a genius African American assistant helps solve the mystory of the heart. Without this groundbreaking research, many people today would not be alive.
Something the Lord made right!!!.......2007-06-12
Absolutly superb.
Heart warming and sincere.
Four of the most influential people in heart surgury in the world.
Something HBO Made.......2007-05-17
When I read the description of Something The Lord Made, I thought to myself - there is just no conceivable way that this is going to be interesting. However, it did have a lot going for it. It was directed by Joseph Sargent, who also directed the brilliant, A Lesson Before Dying. It starred Alan Rickman who is so good he could make an IKEA commercial look like it was directed by Ingmar Bergman. It paired Rickman with Mos Def, who has remarkable screen presence. (I first noticed Mos Def in another exceptional film, The Woodsman, which, coincidentally or not, also featured Kyra Sedgwick.) So, despite the promise of (in)action confined exclusively to a medical lab, I forged ahead.
I'm so glad I did. This is one of those minor gems you might easily miss. Make sure to pay attention to the score, which is outstanding. It's way too easy to sketch this movie out as an anti-racism diatribe, that's way too facile. As with A Lesson Before Dying, racism is simply a fact, not a larger-than-life villain. This, of course, makes the depiction that much more powerful. We don't see the pain of racism courtesy of gassy soliloquies; we feel the pain of it as we read Mos Def's face watching Dr. Blalock receive his award at Baltimore's Biltmore Hotel.
Why beat a dead parrot? We know the Biltmore is segregated. Vivien - Def - can only gain admittance by posing as a bellhop. We know that Blalock is a vain and arrogant surgeon (quelle surprise!) only too willing to bask in glory that would never have been his without Vivien's remarkable contributions. And yes, we know that the racist culture surrounding these men makes it easy for Blalock to distance himself from Vivien when it suits him.
This context of racism is woven right into our flag; it's part of the culture, hardly newsworthy enough to merit a film. The engine that's really driving Something The Lord Made is not racism at all; it's the subtle, complex relationship joining these very different men who share a passion for medicine. The interplay between Vivien's self-effacing, quiet dignity and Blalock's braggadocio is pure gold, these two are so right for each other; they balance one another in a way that is touching at the very least.
Certainly there were moments when I wanted to explain to the supercilious twits at Hopkins that Vivien was the genius behind the wheel and they should be lavishing praise on him. At times it was sad, and Vivien's stoicism makes it sadder. But the movie never takes cheap shots; Def and Rickman offer marvelously reserved performances, thereby increasing the impact. Ultimately I was left with an overwhelmingly positive sense of how people can, and often do, achieve miraculous things despite the mountains of debris and bizarre baggage they've been saddled with. A wonderful film.

Caught between the purest of intentions and unimaginative shortcuts to sentimentality, The Mighty is nevertheless rewarding enough to make it worth seeing. Kieran Culkin stars as Kevin, a terminally ill but spirited young boy who befriends a healthy but illiterate social outcast, Maxwell (Elden Henson). They realize that together they are a stronger, braver force than they are as individuals, and the various opportunities they have to confront persecutors and memories of their bad fathers are handled very effectively by director Peter Chelsom (a very original filmmaker who made the terrific Funny Bones). The curious adult casting includes Sharon Stone (a natural scene-stealer even when she doesn't intend it) as Kevin's saintly mother, and Gillian Anderson in a quite-unbelievable supporting role. Chelsom's lapses in judgment are not terribly significant (imaginary appearances by Camelot-era knights on horseback are the most annoying), though one could argue that a plot to kidnap one of the boys is a cheesy way to underscore the kids' redemptive loyalty to one another. Still, all in all, you can laugh and cry at this tale of rare friendship, and admire the sensitive performances by Chelsom's younger players. --Tom Keogh

This was such a touching movie. If you enjoyed the movie Simon Birch then you will love this movie. It's inspirational and a tear jerker!
A Must See Movie.......2007-05-13
While watching this movie it takes you back to when you were in school..and the truth about how cruel kids can be. But at the same time how they can stand up for what is right. I have loaned this movie out to everyone I know. They all have purchased it after watching it.
Another must see movie ( Pay it Forward) you won't forget either of these movies.
Excellent movie.......2007-03-18
Freak the Mighty, a book by Rodman Philbrick, was the inspiration for the movie The Mighty. It is a character-builing story, with two opposites who become a powerful unit against the challenges each must deal with. My eighth graders loved the book when we read it in class; the movie became a wonderful way to compare and contrast the written and the film depictions of the characters. I have added Freak the Mighty to my list of favorite books and The Mighty to my list of favorite movies.
Everyone Needs to Read this book!.......2007-02-16
The first time I read this book, I laughed, cried, and felt every emotion possible. As a middle school teacher, I made sure I read it to my students. It has become a favorite for the school and most of the students that have read it. The movie is also outanding. This book needs to be a classic.... If you are reading this review, you need to purchase the book and read it to your children, grandchildren or whoever. They will love you forever!!!
The Mighty mighty.......2007-01-15
I purchased this movie again because I lost my first copy. I used it as a follow up to the reading of the book by the same title. My at risk junior high school students enjoyed both the book and the movie!!! The theme is timeless and the film is well acted. It can be seen over and over again!

Amazon.com essential video
Though it's impossible to gauge just how much of it is true, this endearing family comedy (based on the book by their children Frank B. Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey) is inspired by the true story of the husband-and-wife efficiency experts Frank and Lillian Gilbreth and their adventures raising 12 kids at the turn of the century. Director Walter Lang takes a loping pace through the episodes of family life: the kids descend upon the new school in force while Dad (fussy Clifton Webb) offers his unsolicited views on education; Dad takes his oldest daughter (wholesome Jeanne Crain) to the school dance and becomes the hit of the ball; a mass tonsillectomy becomes an opportunity to document the ordeal as an experiment in efficiency. Myrna Loy almost steals the film in her one standout scene, holding back a smirk while a birth-control advocate (played by Mildred Natwick) solicits this mother of 12 to speak at a rally, but her martini-dry comic deadpan is criminally underused in this picture, which is dominated by Webb's stern, military-like parenting and Crain's adolescent crises. Though this sometimes overly sentimental classic never builds to any real dramatic plateau or comic highlights, it maintains an even tone of good humor and warmth throughout, capturing a bygone era through the travails of a loving family. A charming sequel, Belles on Their Toes, followed two years later. --Sean Axmaker
Description
This colorful depiction of life in a family of 12 children stars Clifton Webb as Frank Bunker Gilbreth, an eccentric father who prides himself on some truly unorthodox child-rearing methods. Based on the bestseller by two children of the real Mr. Gilbreth, this charming film co-starring Myrna Loy is "alive with big laughs" (Los Angeles Times).
Narrated by the oldest daughter (Jeanne Crain), the story follows a series of family crises over the years: from how the children over-whelmed their new school's administration office, to the time they threw a hospital into chaos when they arrived for a mass tonsillectomy. There's even a memorable encounter with a birth control advocate. Simultaneously hilarious and sentimental, "Cheaper by the Dozen is a family comedy in the truest sense.

It is great to see a family from the past and see the problems of that day in time. Children that behave. and love for one another. pat
CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN DVD.......2007-05-14
The dvd was in excellent condition. I have seen this movie before and I wanted to add to my collection of movies based on true stories. I enjoy comedies as well as movies based on true stories. I would recommend this movie over the ones with Steve Martin.
One of the greatest ever.......2007-05-07
I saw this as a movie when I was a younger girl. It left such a great feeling I have never forgotten it. Then I was so glad to see I could get it in DVD form. Since receiving it I have watched it numerous times. With a storyline like this one it is such a treat to escape the real stresses of the day. It makes for alot of laughter and warm feeling in the heart. Since I come from a large family it brought back alot of memories. All of them happy ones. I also purchased Belles On Their Toes, the sequel. It was just as entertaining and touching. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to feel good about life.
Cheaper by the Dozen (old version).......2007-01-16
Wouldn't watch the new movie, love the old one.
Oldie but Goodie.......2007-01-14
I purchased this to show my industrial engineering students - they hadn't heard of it and the Galbreaths are the founding father/mother of industrial engineering ... also should see the sequel Bells on their Toes

Excellent!.......2007-06-16
Well-done, magnificent example of sensibility combined with technical virtuosism.
A fascinating journey.......2007-05-14
This documentary follows the multiple pregnancies of three different women, from conception to shortly after the birth. Rachel (the only one who isn't a first-time mother) is having fraternal twins (a boy and a girl), Jennifer is having triplets (two identical boys plus one fraternal brother who was conceived on a different day), and Julie is having identical quads (girls). All three of these sets of multiples were conceived naturally, even Julie's (the odds of having naturally-conceived identical quads are one in eight million!). Using cutting-edge 4-D technology, we're able to get a fascinating look at just what goes on in the womb during these gestational periods. Not only do we get to see what the embryos/fetuses look like as they develop, but we also get to see the kinds of interactions they have with one another, interactions that vary from up-close and personal (if they're together in the same amnion and chorion, no barriers between them) to only able to feel one another through membranes if they're in separate amnions and chorions.
This documentary is loaded with just about everything you ever might have wanted to know about multiple pregnancies. Topics include the different types of twinning, what might cause conjoined twins, how interactions in utero continue playing out after birth (such as one set of twins in which the dominant twin often kicked his brother, who put his head down on the placenta for comfort instead of fighting back; as they grew up, the submissive twin would go to his room and put his head on the blanket when bullied by the dominant one), why older women are more prone to naturally-conceived multiples (one theory is that the eggs a woman is left with by then are weakened by age and therefore more likely to split), why many twins are mirror images of one another, and how a woman's height affects how close to term she can bring a multiple pregnancy. I knew that sometimes triplets can be carried almost to full term and delivered naturally, but didn't know that the odds are greater for such a thing if the mother is taller. Jennifer, the triplets' mother, was almost six feet tall, though she ended up having to have a C-section that wasn't as close to full term as had been hoped.
In addition to shining a light on the amazing process of development a fetus goes through, it also lets one into the mysterious world of what it's like to actually be in there, and to be on the same amazing journey with one, two, or even three other companions. One can't help but wonder how much these newborn multiples remember of their time in the womb, when they formed a bond like no other with their womb-mates.
Amazing.......2007-04-06
I had to watch this movie for a human development course in college. It is the most amazing thing to see actual footage of multiples growing in the womb. I also learned a lot about multiples that I did not previously know. Very good watch! Definitely reccomended.

Peter Bogdanovich directed this sensitive and moving story about a teenage boy, Rocky (Eric Stoltz), who lives with severe facial deformities and poor prognosis for survival beyond childhood. The film concentrates on that threshold-of-adulthood period familiar to past and present 16-year-olds, folding together common experiences of youth (love, hassles with mom, a desire to travel) with the special burdens endured by the hero. Stoltz, absolutely unrecognizable under lots and lots of prosthetic makeup, is quite good, as are Cher (as Rocky's mother) and Sam Elliott (Rocky's father figure). More than a tearjerker, the film is a genuine celebration of all that is most precious in life, even more to those who have nothing to take for granted. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
I love it,- it's a classic!!!.......2007-05-09
I love this move. It's so full of emotions. It's about Rocky (Eric Stoltz), a 16 year old boy who has a deformed face. His mother is Rusty (played by Cher) and she really fights for her son to have a normal life. Both of them have their devoted friends in a biker environment. I've seen it a lot of times and I cry every time. Heartfelt and excellent acting
On the bright side, Cher remains fully clothed.......2007-02-12
I liked it so much better when Eric Stoltz lived with that other family and decided to shack up with his tomboy drummer next-door neighbor chick with the new wave hairdo and duds, and tight little body. He turned down the annoying, future homemaker-looking Mrs. Popularity in the process. Amazing! Damn, it looks like Eric got stung in the face by a wild pack of bees for hours and then had his head stretched on a rack after being taken in by his new foster mom and biker gang. Don't worry, these are the same bikers as the ones who deliver cute little stuffed animals to kids with leukemia, so it's all good. Not! Later, if you'll remember, Eric devolves into a drug addict bank robber in Paris and eventually earns a living selling drugs to folks like Vincent Vega, an inane, puffy-faced and high-ranking Scientology official. So I guess you can at least partly blame Eric for "Battlefield Earth."
How About A 2-Disc Set? With A Documentary About The Real Rocky Dennis.......2006-08-27
I am not going to write about the movie as what more can be said, its incredible, emotional, touching, etc.
I think they need to make a definitive 2-disc edition.
On it, should at least be the following:
-All the extras from this version plus new extras
-A documentary about the real Rocky Dennis, including actual pictures, interviews, etc.
-Where is Eric Stoltz in the extras? Should have interviews with Eric about what it was like playing Rocky Dennis, etc.
- I love the Springsteen music in it but also enjoyed the music in the theatrical version so they should include that version on the 2nd disc.
-At the end of the movie after the credits roll Cher comes on and talks about the disease/disfigurement. This should be longer and could include experts talking about it like doctors, family members, etc. I also think they should've put the Cher interview on the actual special features listing in the dvd and on the back of the case, why have it buried at the end of the movie where not everyone will see it?
hopefully you found this review helpful, if enough people did, maybe the studio will see the demand and release a definitive 2-disc set.
Mask .......2006-07-08
Mask is the ultimate Biker movie about the close bond between a mother and her son. There are some awesome scenes that are not shown on VHS or on TV. Everytime I watch this I cry. Sam Elliott is the best Biker Boyfriend for his part. Eric Stoltz outdid himself in this movie and Cher was awesome and really brought this one to home. Cheers
5 stars for Original 2 for Director's Cut.......2006-06-29
This Director's Cut is bad, simply because it's not the original threatrical version - I liked the old soundtrack and with this one the Springsteen songs seem way too overused and doesn't fit. It was fine the way it was.

The late "Pistol" Pete Maravich made basketball history as the most spectacular college scorer ever, and he's still inspiring kids through this movie based on his first season of high school varsity basketball (which he played when he was in eighth grade). This 90-minute film explores the supportive father-son relationship that pushed him to the heights of achievement and fame (Dad was a former pro and Clemson University coach) and includes a story line on the stirrings of the quest for racial equality in the late 1950s. Newcomer Adam Guier plays some fine basketball in his role as the young Maravich. Viewers won't be able to track his no-look passes any better than opponents could when the real Maravich was dishing them out. In fact, the basketball sequences in general are superior to many seen in bigger-budget films. Shot on location in Louisiana, where Maravich grew up, the film captures the moral dilemmas of its time while still keeping a positive drive, making it an excellent film to watch with the kids. --Kimberly Heinrichs
Description
"Pistol" Pete Maravich had a dream - that he could achieve anything he put his heart and mind into. He wanted to become the greatest player anyone had ever seen. The Pistol is the true story of a legacy handed down from one generation to the next. Much more than a story about basketball, this is a story of a boy and his relationship with his father. It's a movie of the American Dream. 'Pistol' Pet Maravich (Adam Guier), a scrawny five-foot-two, 90 pound eighth-grader plays basketball with the innocence of a child and the determination of a champion. Pete inherited a dream from his father, Press Maravich (Nick Benedict) and he believed that if he committed himself completely to his dream, he would one day play professional basketball and win a championship ring. Including Academy Award nominee Millie Perkins as Pete's mother Helen, 'The Pistol' shares the story of an American sports legend. It teaches us the American Dream is alive and well to all those who believe in it. DVD features: "Maravich Memories" - Making of Documentary, Out-Takes & Bloopers, Pistol Pete's Sports Records Gallery, Pistol Pete Trivia, English & Spanish Language Tracks, Commentary by the Producers, High-Def Transfer, 16x9 Anamorphic Widescreen, Dolby Digital 5.1, DVD-9.

The Pistol.......2007-05-19
Top film for all the family. Feel good movie which you can watch over & over. If your into sports movies this is one to get.You don't even have to be a basketball fan
The Pistol has plenty of pop!.......2007-05-13
If you are a fan of basketball, you must know who "Pistol" Pete Maravich is and about his contribution to the game.
Now you can get a glimpse into the childhood story of how Maravich grew into one of the top 50 players in NBA history in this wonderful family movie.
The movie has plenty of basketball action and the young man playing the "Pistol", Adam Guier, shows off some amazing skills. This is a super film to watch if you are coaching young children. The story offers hope and inspiration, as well as some woonderful drills for your players to try.
This movie, rated G, is part of a dying breed-Great FAMILY entertainment for the ENTIRE family.
Not as good as what I remembered.......2007-05-10
I saw this movie when it FIRST came out on VHS and thought I liked it. I was impressed with the skills of the young Pistol, like when he was walking on the rail of the railroad tracks, dribbling the ball on the railroad ties.
In this viewing, I didn't have the same impression. The basketball footage is comical in how easy everything is portrayed. People don't play defense, Pistol gets wide open layups, etc. I could have beaten the teams they played, and I don't even play basketball.
Then there are the racist undertones, while Pistol isn't portrayed as the racist, his teammates/coach/community are, there is no condemnation of it either. It makes for a very uncomfortable viewing in 2007.
This movie is mildly entertaining, but the voice over narration is creepy and the story line takes far too long to get going.
inspirational sports movie young and old can enjoy.......2007-03-09
This is a story about the great Pete Maravich and his eigth grade basketball season playing on the varsity high school team. I say a story because it probably is not a true biography. For instance, Pete's brother Ronnie played on the team and that is not mentioned in the movie. Ronnie had a hot and cold relationship with the family and was probably purposely left out of the movie. Also, I believe the relationship as portrayed between Pete's mother and father in the movie is probably a little too cozy as opposed to what reality was. Having said that, as a sports movie it is very uplifting. The actor that plays Pete does a great job of trying to showcase the skills that Pete was developing at the time that would eventually lead to him having a great basketball career. At different points in the movie we see Pete practice the dribbling and passing drills that helped him acquire the skills that were far superior to other players at the time. He would then put those skills to play during the games, and the actor in the movie must have practiced a lot because he does a good job in the game sequences. We also get a sense from the movie about the relationship Pete has with his dad. His dad basically raised him to become a professional basketball player. The movie depicts Press Maravich, Pete's dad, as hard driving, but somewhat tender. The performances of the other actors are very good as well. Particularly that of the coach of the high school team. He really does a great job of portraying the attitude of baskeball coaches back at this time which was: slow the game down and pass into the tall guy. Pete was devloping a game that would be based on the fast break which would include slick ball handling and passes meant to trick the opposition and also delight the crowd. Some of the lines the coach has during time outs of games are pretty funny. I read somewhere that they actually tried to get Ronald Reagan to play the part of the coach after he was President: This movie was made in the early 1990's. Made on a shoe string budget, this film shows that you don't need to have a ton of money to make a good movie.
Great motivational movie.......2007-02-02

Description
Narrated by Oprah Winfrey, Emmanuel's Gift tells the story of a disabled orphan in Ghana, West Africa, whose father abandoned him, village dismissed him, and country thought him better off dead. This is the story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah, who had nothing, but gave everything--and changed a nation forever.
Customer Reviews:

unreal....a man with nothing into that which we all aspire to....conquering and beating the DEMONS!, meeting Oprah....
Emmanue'ls Gift a great motivator.......2007-05-21
I watched Emmanuel's Gift with my 2 sons, age 10 and 11. After the movie we had a great discussion about the opportunities they'll have in their life. If Emmanuel could do so much good with the difficulties he faces, just immagine what they could accomplish in their lives!!! It was a great door opener for conversations about making goals, working hard and never giving up.
a gift from ghana.......2007-01-25
watched this film because the DVD blurb by Oprah Winfrey (who narrates a good portion of the film) encourages "every parent to take their children to see this movie." And how many films have you watched that are set in Ghana?! Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah was born with a deformed leg and suffered all the disadvantages and humiliations you would expect in a third world country. His father deserted the family, then his mother died, but through perseverance of body, mind, and spirit, Emmanuel became a national hero as a champion of the disabled in Ghana. His initial feat was to ride a bike across Ghana on one leg to draw attention to the plight of the disabled; the rest of the documentary follows how this snowballed onto an international stage including visits with Kofi Annan (a Ghanaian), Robin Williams, and to even more remarkable athletic accomplishments. Emmanuel's "gift" involves a double entendre; he had his leg amputated and replaced by a prosthesis at Loma Linda Hospital in California, and of course his incredible story is a gift to all of us. Oprah was right; see this wonderful documentary about an incredible human being.
Inspirational and informative.......2007-01-11
Would have rated it a five star for impact! We watched it with our grandchildren ages 5 and 7, stopping it along the way to explain and answer their questions regarding disabilities in general and what they were observing in the film. They were mesmerized by what they were seeing and by the courage and perserverence which Emmanuel demonstrates. At times it is hard to understand and moves at a clip which required us to replay many sections in order to follow. Highly recommend for helping children become more comfortable with special needs members of their community. Emmanuel's commitment to use what was given to him to overcome his own limitations and in turn use his gifts for the benefit of others is an invaluable lesson for all of us and especially for children in their formative years.
Inspiration low? Watch this movie..........2007-01-10
This movie was phenomenal!!! Incredibly inspiring and helped me put my own life and struggles into perspective. One person really can change not only their own life and the lives of those around them, but single handedly change a country.

The Snapper may be the funniest film ever made about an unexpected pregnancy. In adapting the second novel of his popular Barrytown Trilogy, Irish author Roddy Doyle brilliantly captures the hilarious dynamics of a working-class family, the virulent gossip of their nosy Dublin neighbors, and the mixed emotions of a young woman on the verge of single motherhood. Sharon (Tina Kellegher) is the 20-year-old daughter of Dessie (Colm Meaney), and her refusal to name the father of her unborn child turns into an escalating crisis that's as traumatic (especially for Dessie) as it is delightfully amusing. The film was directed for British television by Stephen Frears, but its flawless blend of comedy and drama made it worthy of a theatrical release, landing it on many critics' top 10 lists for 1993. Best known as Chief O'Brien on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Meaney mines gold from the role of his career, and his fatherly love turns The Snapper into a heartwarming charmer with universal appeal. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
Good craic.......2007-01-15
This is a hugely entertaining film, filled with brilliant Dublin humour. However - and I could be mistaken - I think that it has been cut in parts? I first saw this many years ago and distinctly remember a few scenes and phrases that appear to have vanished. I wonder why? A good laugh anyway.
The Snapper.......2007-01-13
One of my favorite Irish movies! An unplanned pregnancy puts a working-class family through some changes that ultimately bring them closer together. Completely realistic. Explores the themes of family and sexuality in a warm, witty fashion.
lousy script with nothing but.....????.......2006-09-21
either drinking, cursing, and laughing in the pub, or replaying the messy home life style. what is this? you call this 'one of the year's top 10 movies!', 'two thumbs up!', 'one of the year's funniest!'?????????? this is one of the most terrible movies with bore-to-death storylines i've ever seen. acting maybe acceptable but, with such a lousy script and a bunch of ugly young female actors, i have to pass. wasted my money was fine, but wasted 95 minutes watching this silly movie? well, absolutely not! rejected the dvd out of the player after about 15 minutes. thanks for nothing.
Pleasant Surprise.......2006-07-08
This is one of those movies you'd never have known about unless you came across it by accident on cable TV , like I did. I had never heard of it, but was lucky to find it while looking for something to watch on a rainy day off. This movie was one of the funniest, heartwarming films I have ever seen. The family interaction was so true to life, it was like being in my own home growing up. (Catholic Italian - very similar to Irish Catholic in nature). Sometimes the dialogue was a little difficult to follow with the heavy accents; and the conception of the child made you angry at both she and the father - and made you wonder why she chose the path she did. For the little things this movie isn't, it sure earned a place as one of my all time favorites. Colm Meany was the best. This was by far his best performance. The movie was so good, it made me late because I couldn't tear myself away, and even then I had to miss the last 10 minutes or leave my poor teenage daughter waiting for her ride after work. I HAD to buy it just to see the end. I'll be watching this one over and over.

Description
Dianne Parker (Kimberly Williams) meets and marries the handsome and charismatic Mark McCune (Eric Close), never noticing the quiet attention of his brother, David (Campbell Scott), a soft-spoken pediatrician. Their marriage seems perfect until the birth of their daughter, Julia, a baby with genetic abnormalities. Mark, who can't face the idea of a less-than-perfect child, walks out, leaving Dianne to confront the challenges of being a single mom. As the years pass, Dianne and her mother, Hannah (Blair Brown), remain selflessly devoted to Julia. David introduces Dianne to a young girl (Alexa Vega) from a troubled home as a "mother's helper," and things begin to change. Julia gains a best friend and Dianne finds renewed strength and hope, but David must wait patiently for a chance to reveal his true feelings. In the process, Dianne learns that love is more than what you feel for someone - it's what you're willing to give of yourself.

excellent.......2007-02-07
This movie reminds me of a movie that happens all the time. It was so heart felt and romantic.
A very thoughtful and thought provoking film.......2007-01-31
I've seen this movie several times. It was at the most recent viewing that several thoughts came to mind. I worked in a major medical center for several years and on occassion my clinic would see children who were severely disabled. I would think what kind of life were the kids and their parents having - spending many days in the hospital. I still don't know if I have an answer but the film has me thinking about it again. I can empathize with the husband not being able to deal with the catastrophy (from his viewpoint) of a disabled child. My ex-wife was diagnosed with a possible cancer (ultimately found to be not a cancer). When she was describing how she was feeling (very very scared) I didn't know what to say so ultimately just sat there like a dope and looked at her. Not my best performance as a husband. This movie brought that scene in my own life back very vividely. Watching the mom's helper after she had been injured in a car accident apologizing for not being able to take care of Julia and Julia's mom and her alcoholic mother brought back other memories of my alcoholic father and how at the age of 12 I was trying to figure out ways to make him not drink. I never did come up with a solution but seeing the torment in the child (who was apparently younger than me) brought the moments of over 40 years ago back to me. So for me, this movie was thought provoking on many issues about my own life. I'm not sure that this is a movie for everyone. Some have said it has a good ending. I'm not sure. There is a pending death and you won't if Amy's mom says sober. There are uncertainties in this movie just like in real life. But at the conclusion you are at least hopeful that things will work out ok for everyone. Ultimately this was a hard movie for me to watch but at the same time it was beneficial. The acting was exceptional and the feelings and emotions they all conveyed were easy to understand and feel. I recommend this movie highly but I'm not sure it is a movie that kids will easily understand. Parents should stand by for lots of questions which have very hard answers.

A great movie, but not a Christmas movie - don't know how it got labelled that! Great acting and a good storyline. Enjoyed it.
Feel Good Movie.......2006-07-26
As many people as possible should watch this movie. It never fails to leave the watcher with a warm feeling and that all will be well. Makes strong arguments for family values. Kimberly Williams is superb in her role as a single mother struggling to raise a disabled child. Campbell Scott also gives a commendable performance as the silent admirer. Blair Brown is the perfect mother to Kimberly's character. Do watch it!
