Franc Roddam's terrifically energetic movie, set to music from the Who's Quadrophenia, is--at the very least, the best film ever based on a rock album (and, yes, that includes, Tommy, Pink Floyd: The Wall, and Jesus Christ Superstar). Actually, this tale of the battle between two early '60s youth subcultures--Mods and Rockers--in the seaside teenage wasteland of Brighton, England, isn't so much a cinematic "version" of the Who's 1979 double-record rock opera as it is a story based on the sequence of songs on the album. Quadrophenia is about that crucial time in teenhood when the lion's share of your sense of identity is tied up in the music you listen to, the clothes you wear, and the groups you hang out with. Jimmy (Phil Daniels) identifies himself with the sharp-dressing, scooter-riding Mods, who listen to American soul and British pop-rock (The Who themselves were once rather Mod). The Rockers, on the other hand, are leather-jacketed, black-booted, motorcycle-riding tough guys who listen primarily to classic American rock & roll. The film captures this minor pop-culture revolution perfectly. Look for Sting as a club-hopping slickster, who's shameful secret is that he's a hotel bellboy by day. --Jim Emerson

If you want to see a great movie about the Mod Movement in the 1960s, strap your self in for the (vespa) ride.

5 out of 5 stars Quadrophenia, The Movie .......2006-10-31

As a huge Who fan I loved this flick. It brought the lyrics of the album to life. Pretty well acted too. Phil Daniels as "Jimmy" was great. You do need to pay close attention to the dialog as the british cockney accents are very strong. Gives you a true feel for life in early '60s England. I have an old VHS that I copied back in 1980 and I'm thrilled to be buying a DVD edition in 5.1 quality sound to rock out to the Who's best album (in my opinion) all over again! Sad to think there's just Pete and Roger left of the Who now but their music lives on forever!! If you get the chance, check out this movie!

1 out of 5 stars This film is disgusting.......2006-10-04

If you want to watch a movie where young boys (unattractive teenage boys, ladies) sit in bath tubs, with no attempt to hide their private parts with bubbles. All the while they curse back and forth at each other in such a harsh British accent, that all one can understand is the foul language; then this film is for you.

Half way through, I took out my sharp compass and scrapped the word "Disgusting" across the DVD, so I could never make the same mistake of watching this rubbish again. I'm U.S. Navy (Retired). And I have never, ever, heard such needless foul language even from drunken sailors, as is in this film.

4 out of 5 stars Mods rule ok.......2006-08-31

What a movie...like it or not this movie tells it how it was in the 60's in England. The clashes of police with mods and rockers, scooters versus motorbikes and the effects of alcohol and sex in finding oneself. The music of The Who brings it altogether. Buy it...you will feel yourself singing 'My Generation' for days after...Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Cult nostalgia.......2006-08-27

The themes explored in this movie are pretty cliche - angst ridden young man finds illusory identity in youth cult, gets off with girl, gets dumped by girl, then goes beserk. But worth seeing for the brilliant evocation of a time in the 60s when gang war between Mods and Rockers ruled. And Leslie Ash at her finest as the temptress Steph (way before her ill advised lip enlargement). And Sting as a curiously stilted club hipster.

Description

Rhino Records is proud to present a 3-DVD boxed set showcasing one of the greatest live bands ever-The Who. Disc one features a live rendition of their full-blown rock opera about a deaf, dumb, and blind boy. Tommy was performed live in 1989 at The Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, with special guests Elton John, Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Patti LaBelle, and Steve Winwood. Disc two contains the band's second rock opus, this time built around the story of a young mod's struggle to come of age in the mid-60s. This live version of Quadrophenia, from the 1996/1997 U.S. Tour was the first time it was performed as Townshend and Daltrey had visualized it, with live action and featuring a then-unknown Alex Langdon in a spellbinding performance as Jimmy, the disillusioned Mod.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD collection!.......2007-06-01

I have simply loved this DVD, and do not for a moment regret buying it.

Pros:
-having two FULL concerts is simply excellent: it gives a seamless and authentic feel to the band/music and the whole thing is fun to watch.
-great commentary: townshend and daltrey were apparently filmed against a blue screen and their bodies appear overlayed on the actual concert (with the music faded significantly while they talk).
-Good concerts, filming, quite a good live performance.
-guest appearances are pretty neat, with a brief but memorable appearance by Phil Collins.
-incredible bass solo by john entwistle in 5:15. Simply outstanding.

Cons:
-Of course it's largely a matter of personal opinion, but I was dissapointed that all content is from 1989+, so no keith moon. This also means some older yet notable songs were not included. (magic bus, my generation, pictures of lily. No sister disco or eminence front either, though those were a couple of their later songs).

Overall, well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars The Who - Tommy and Quadrophenia Live.......2007-05-29

5 out of 5 stars A Definite Must For Who Fans.......2006-12-22

I had front row seats for the 1989 "Greatest Hits" tour at Alpine Valley, WI. This is an excellent collection of The Who in concert. The archival footage of the Mods and Rockers wars on the "Quadrophenia" disc are a real pleasure, also. Townshend is memorable, and I still consider John Entwhistle the greatest rock bass guitarist.

5 out of 5 stars Live Who.......2006-12-05

Even with only 3 (now 2) no one rocks like the Who! Thanks Steve for the X'Mas Present!

5 out of 5 stars Who are YOU?.......2006-11-05

The people that have written negative reviews about this DVD even though they have given it 3+ stars have absolutely nothing intelligent to say on the matter. It sounds like a group of lonely geeks that never even made it in a garage band trying to critique one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Why don't you guys shut up and go see a Flock of Seagulls reunion.

5 out of 5 stars We are the Mods, We are the Mods..........2006-10-13

A truely fantastic film from a truely awsome Who album! The film depicts 1964, when the two rival youth movements were very much present. On one side you had the traditional Rockers with their big bikes & leathers & on the other, the new kid on the block - The Mod (Modernist). 1964 was a fantastic time in England with London being a mecca for all things Mod. Quadrophenia takes us on a 60's trip through London & the south coast resort of Brighton. It tells the story of Jimmy (The Mod)& his aspirations for all thing Mod, only to conclude that things ain't all they suppose to be. A great cast is brought together under the watchful eye of Franc Roddam. All works well on this movie, the young cast, the director & lets not forget the thumping sounds of the Who with a nice blend of 60's sounds to back the picture up. It's quality at it's best. It's English & it was made at a time when the British film industry was truely suffering, (as it still does). We do pride ourselves on our films & Quadrophenia does us more than Proud - with a capitol 'P' .

3 out of 5 stars Misconception leads to missed conception.......2007-04-19

Lets get a few things straight out there. I'm a big fan of The Who. One of greatest, if not the greatest rock n roll band, ever. The title of this album/opera is a modification of the word schizophrenia. It's a common misconception that schizophrenia means multiple personalities. It does not, the term for that mental disorder is Multiple Personality Disorder, go figure. Regardless Townshend ran with his misconception and modified schizophrenia to quadrophenia to accommodate the four personalities of our protagonist, Jimmy.

Quadraphenia fails as a rock opera, since the songs and music together, can't tell the story. This actually requires a read a long booklet that comes with the CD to provide background and to fill in the blanks. As it is presented here, we have the advantage of an over the top live production of the music, huge screen view of the film itself to fill in the blanks, and a couple guest stars to step and play music, sing and become characters from the story, live on the stage.

Sound goofy yet? It should. And while I love The Who, comparing this album to other hard rock albums trying to tell a story (rock opera if you care to call it that) like The Who's own Tommy or Pink Floyd's The Wall, the music just falls miserably short. I know the album usually ranks well on those silly 100 Greatest Album lists that are put out by everyone from VH1 to Rolling Stone Magazine to Regis and Kelly, but the record doesn't do much for me. The songs just aren't that good, and when you listen to the songs, the story is incomplete. It's a lose/lose situation.

The Live footage is nice, but it seems they only have a few camera views. The shots of the band members are pretty much just the same one or two looks over and over. The music does sound great, but there are a few problems with it. This is another one of those times, when The Who quit being a rock band and tried very hard to be something else, I can only assume something that Townshend felt was something more. In addition to the band you're used to seeing, with Zak Starkey on drums, there's a second drummer, a percussionist, a horns and strings section, multiple keyboardists, multiple back up singers and Pete Townshend`s brother Simon on guitar and doing some vocals. It's just a bit on the side of pompous. And on top of that, John Entwistle's bass is hardly heard.

The two main live on stage characters are played by Billy Idol, who does a great job as the Ace Face, the rebel mod that ended up working as bellboy, and PJ Proby who apparently has the look they wanted for the Godfather, the "rocker". Frankly, I couldn't understand a single think PJ Proby ever said while singing. He just looked like a bad caricature of something from "The Wild One". Just awful.

So, the songs are relatively weak, but the music does song clear and strong on the footage (save for the bass). The story is a bit generic, but the footage and acting scenes at least provide for the complete story, since the music doesn't. If you're a die hard fan of The Who, you'll probably love this. If you're a middle of the road fan, you can take it or leave it. If you're not a fan of The Who, this isn't going to turn you into a fan. Regardless, the 3-disc version which has complete footage of both Quadrophenia and Tommy would really be the better buy.

2 out of 5 stars Four star concert from the greatest rock band ever; this DVD version is two stars.......2006-08-24

A solid performance of "Quadrophenia," although this single-disc version (like the new single-disc version of "Tommy Live" is missing the encore sets. It's a better bargain to get both concerts, plus their "hits" encores on the three-disc, "The Who Quadrophenia and Tommy Live" DVD. You spend a little bit more money, but you get ALL of the footage from both shows - that triple-disc version (that has similar cover artwork) is a four-star DVD collection). To me, the rock operas were interesting and solid here, but the encore of hits is where The Who rocked out the most on these two tours. It's true, John Entwistle's bass could have been turned up in the mix - not sure why his bass guitar is almost buried under the guitars, vocals, horns and such. And that's Pete's younger brother, Simon Townshend, on guitar, not Pete's son, as one reviewer claimed below. Simon also played on the 2002 tour, at Live 8 in 2005 and on the current tour, although he's playing rhythm guitar now, instead of lead like he did during this 1996/97 DVD. For the 1989 and 1996-97 tours, Pete mostly played rhythm. Thanksfully, Pete did all of the lead solos on the 2000 tour (the only post-1982 Who tour to feature only one guitarist (Pete!)) and on the 2002 tour, as well as the current tour.
Anyway, these videos are good to have but they're not the best of The Who because of Townshend mainly sticking with acoustic/rhythm guitar and the augmented lineup. Start with the two-disc version of "The Kids Are Alright," then get "Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 (brown cover with individual shots of Pete, Roger, John and Keith Moon on the front)," then "Live at the Royal Albert Hall (shot in Nov. 2000 and released in Sept. 2001)" and "Live In Boston (shot in 2002 and released in 2004)." Also pick up "The Concert For New York," which has one of The Who's greatest sets ever on film. Their performance of "Who Are You," "Baba O Riley," "Behind Blue Eyes" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" are incredible and will turn any casual ilstener into a big fan. When they launched into "Baba O Riley," as the firefighters, police officers and other emergency personnel jumped for joy, that is when the U.S. really started to heal after the 2001 terrorist attacks. It's a jaw-dropping performance and alone worth the price of the multi-artist DVD.
The tour that spawned this "Quadrophenia" DVD was John Entwistle's next-to-last Who tour before dying on the eve of their 2002 tour in Las Vegas. The 2000 tour, The Who's best post-Moon tour, was Entwistle's last tour. His performance in this "Quadrophenia" DVD is, of course, stellar, although his bass should have been given more "oomph" and "punch" in the mastering/mixing process.
Long live The Who, the greatest rock band in the world!

4 out of 5 stars actually pretty good.......2006-08-13

while the reviewer before me is right in some respects, a lot of the songs are still excellent, for instance i will admit billy idol and pj proby mostly just embarrass themselves when they make a contribution. however most of these songs are just preformed by the who such as the real me and love reign oe'r me, one slight disapointment on this dvd is pete townshend on acoustic guitar, he started playing it when he began to experience hearing loss, while this is disapointing it doesnt ruin the dvd, townshends son fills in nicely, the only huge problem with the dvd is entwhistles bass is turned down too low

3 out of 5 stars sort of a semi-concert.......2006-06-16

Don't expect a Who concert. This is a performance of a "rock opera" in which the members of the band are fused into a single entity for the good of the whole much like your typical orchestra. Whether the whole is worth minimizing the distinctive talents of this band is the question. I think not. Roger shares his microphone with three other singers. Entwistle is mixed down as if he were just another bass player. For almost the entire show Pete is on an acoustic guitar which can only be heard when he plays all alone. The film clips of the disaffected malcontent might offer thematic continuity but didn't interest me. If this is Townsend's magnum opus as he envisioned it, I don't see what all the fuss is about. It has to be seen as more than a rock concert because it isn't a very good rock concert.
