Description
An epic in the spirit of THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, this widely acclaimed motion picture is a meticulous recreation of the turbulent era of Jesus and the events that changed the course of history! Narrated by Golden Globe nominee Christopher Plummer (Best Supporting Actor, AMERICAN TRAGEDY, 2000), it's the bold and powerful story of Jesus as told by his disciple John. The best-loved but least understood of the gospels, John presents a uniquely human portrait of courage and passion encompassing Jesus' entire three-year ministry, the final years of his life. Intimate and reflective, THE GOSPEL OF JOHN offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the incomparable life and times of Jesus Christ.

Customer Reviews:
Why does Jesus have that weird smirk on his face?.......2007-07-04
My brother raved about this movie, and so I foolishly bought it without seeing it first. What a disappointment. It was long and boring, but worst of all, Jesus walks around the whole time with this odd, vacant half-smile on his face, as if this is just a game. If you want to see a realistic view of Jesus' experience, watch The Passion. Gross, but true-to-life.
My last word on the subject: "loving" does not equal "always smiling and soft-spoken." Ugh.
Inspirational!.......2007-06-15
It is so nice to finally have a modern film about the life and ministry of Jesus Christ!! What I mean by that is while I love films like "The Nativity Story" and "The Passion of the Christ", they focus on the parts of Jesus' life that almost every human being knows, has already seen, read about, heard about etc. It's like Christmas and Easter. Christians always show up for church for those two days out of the entire year and thats all they know or care about because those are the "glamorous" parts of Christianity. What I love about "the Gospel of John" is that it spends more time on the LIFE of Christ, emphasising His ministry, His teaching...really the true heart of Christianity. For those of you who want more than the Nativity Story or the Easter Story this is the film for you. The actor who plays Jesus is perfect. While I appreciate the interpretation of Jesus in films like "Jesus of Nazareth", I always wanted to see a Jesus that was less "scary". In "The Gospel of John" Jesus is human, accessible, inspirational, beautiful, tender, strong and one can definitely see how he was able to capture our hearts and really tick off a lot of the religious scholars of His day! The rest of the cast is quite good as well with the exception of Mary (the mother of Jesus). I think she must have known the director or something because she was seriously miscast. Fortunately she is barely in the film.
Another reason I enjoyed this film is that it includes Mary Magdalene in almost all the scenes with the disciples. I appreciate that because I believe she usually gets stuck in the whole prostitute role (which I don't believe). Here I think she gets a little more credit but still not as much as she probably deserves.
I hope you enjoy "The Gospel of John" as much as I did!
Fatally Faithful to the Fourth Gospel.......2007-06-14
Unlike most Jesus films, which tend to be harmonizations of all four gospels, this movie attempts to be strictly faithful to the Fourth Gospel. And that's just what's wrong with it. John's gospel insists that faith in Jesus as the Son of God is what's necessary for salvation. Those whom he calls will believe and be saved; everybody else is damned. Unlike Mark, Matthew and Luke, in which Jesus is an apocalyptic prophet proclaiming the coming kingdom of God and the way to behave until it comes, John's Jesus is a self-aware God demanding faith in himself, and he's plenty angry at those who won't give it. Thus John has no Beatitudes, fewer miracles, no eucharist -- but plenty of long exhortations.
The movie The Gospel of John stays very close to this portrayal, and the results are quite disappointing. Cusick does what he can with the role of Jesus, but the script demands that he spend so much time scolding his fellow Jews and proclaiming his own divinity that it's hard to understand what anybody sees in this guy.
Moreover, many of the episodes we've come to expect in a Jesus movie -- episodes that tend to add drama and sympathy for the character of Jesus -- are missing from this film. Where's the nativity? The temptation in the desert? The baptism by John? The agony in the garden? They're not here -- because they're not in the gospel the film is based on. Instead, there are plenty of interminable speeches, many of which are circular and redundant. By insisting on sticking to the text, the film winds up being very uncinematic, despite all the lavish production values. Unfortunately, you can't fire a screenwriter who's been dead for two thousand years.
By the time the Gospel of John was written, Christians were facing a growing straightforward rejection by mainstream Judaism, and the gospel reflects the bitterness and recriminations of the community for which it was written. So if you're looking for real anti-semitism in a Jesus film -- one in which Jews are truly depicted as hard-hearted dolts squandering their last chance for salvation -- forget about The Last Temptation of Christ or even The Passion of the Christ. For anti-Jewish antagonism, nothing beats The Gospel of John.
A story as old as time...........2007-06-08
This was the most moving thing I have seen in my life. I sat spellbound with tears streaming down my face the first time I saw this. What a great depiction of the boundless, endless, timeless love the father has for us, his children. There may be a few inaccuracies in the film, I have not checked them out yet, but regardless it is a true masterpiece. Highly recommended and well done for a 'religious' film. Better than 'The Passion' by Mel!
Must see!.......2007-05-20
Very good movie.Just as the gospel of John does, this movie is very detailed on the ministry part of Jesus life.No skimping on the dialog or teaching/miracles.Doesn't have the big Hollywood feel to the movie which makes it more realistic.See it now!

Customer Reviews:
The Gospel Road.......2007-03-10
Our church showed this movie in the mid '70's. Several years ago I was able to 'win' a copy (VHS) on e-bay. When the DVD came out I HAD to have one. Wonder when or if they will re-release the "soundtrack" on CD? I have it on vinyl. (NO record player now)
The Gospel Road.......2007-02-18
Johnny Cash takes the truth of Christ's life and death and makes a very sensitive and touching movie that is bound to draw people to the person, Jesus Christ, the only thing that makes sense in this sad and lonely world.
Excellent film.......2007-01-09
The film is very moving and can be given an excellent for the story. As it was filmed in the 1970's the pictures are a little wierd compared to what we used to seeing in today's cinema but the film is still a good one.
Surreal Johnny Cash Art Flick Twist to the Jesus Story..........2006-11-25
This is one strange dramatization of the story of Jesus as narrated by Johnny Cash in his down home, ever cool style, walking along the Galilee or perched atop a high cliff, Bible in hand. Two prominent themes of this Cash version are (1) that Jesus died for all people of all time (especially brought home in the startling crucifixion scene), and (2) that Jesus' journey was very solitary--even when he was amidst crowds. There are very few actors in the film, and even crowd scenes, such as Jesus entering Jerusalem on the donkey, sometimes have no people at all, though they may have a mob of voices heard but not seen.
Those who are sticklers to Biblical chronology and precision, probably would not like this movie, since it employs quite a bit of artistic license and some doubtful interpretations or statements. Also, the movie is weak as an evangelistic film, as it emphasizes the nice, inoffensive pitiable side of Jesus, his healing ministry, love for children, and so on, and largely (but not entirely) skips over sin, need of repentance, repeated confrontation with the Jewish religious leaders, and so on.
Except for brief words from John the Baptist, only Mary Magdalene, played by June Cash, southern accent and all, has a speaking part. The bright blond hair and blue eyes of Jesus are striking, but as the movie obviously doesn't attempt to give a realistic interpretation, those physical qualities only made Jesus stand out in an even more other worldly way apart from his dark-haired disciples, again heightening his separateness, uniqueness. The movie's pace is very laid back, with many scenes of the Sea of Galilee, naked Judean hills (again the aloneness motif), Jordan River, or Galilean hills. The country music adds a nice touch as does Cash's friendly voice.
Because of its uniquenes and artistic liberties, I'm hesitant to recommend it for everyone, but I liked it, if only for the poignant crucifixion scene.
The Gospel Road by Johnny Cash.......2006-11-11
I'm happy this old brilliant movie is available on DVD now. I don't know how many times I watched it yars ago with my youth groupes, and we had chilles every time because it's a gospel narration so touching and profound, and I haven't seen a Jesus character portrayed so close to human reality in another gospel movie. Thanks for this DVD edition.

The Fighting Temptations may not cure the common cold with its FFF (Familiar Feel-Good Formula), but it'll definitely cure what ails you. Here's an unassuming, well-cast comedy drama, filled with forgiving spirit and jubilant gospel music, and its lessons go down as smooth as a mint julep in summertime. Mostly it's just good, harmless fun, beginning when a deceptive corporate ladder-climber (Cuba Gooding Jr.) returns from Manhattan to his southern-fried Georgia hometown to attend the funeral of a beloved aunt, whose will stipulates a reward of $150,000 if he'll direct the local church choir to win a big annual gospel music contest. The outcome is obvious, but veteran comedy director Jonathan Lynn keeps things percolating with casual flair, especially when a lovely lounge singer (Beyoncé Knowles, in a nicely downplayed costarring role) agrees to rejuvenate Gooding's choir, which teams rapping convicts, a boozy barfly (on organ), and bible-thumping prudes. With musical appearances by the O'Jays and the Blind Boys of Alabama, among others, how could this be anything but delightful? --Jeff Shannon

"There is *Definitly HUMOR* in the Church".......2007-03-28
I really enjoyed this movie. The casting was excellent. It had some of the Best Gospel and R&B singers. Also alot of Good actors & actresses. Even though you might not be a church goer. This is still a nice family movie. It is *HILARIOUS* with a great story line.
The Fighting Temptations.......2007-02-19
This was one of the most moving movies I've ever seen. I watched it over and over. One minute I was up praising God; the next couple of minutes I was in tears from laughter; then I was crying along with the characters. The music on the movie & CD was magnificent. Not only is it a great movie with excellently performed music, It has all kinds of life-lessons in it. Every time I watch it, it seems as if I'm watching it for the first time.
Brother Act 1.......2006-12-10
Okay, I admit: at first this movie seems like yet another clone in a long line of lead-the-choir/save-the-church type movies (eg. "Sister Act" & "Gospel"), it actually turns out to be more like the gospel version of "Catch Me If You Can" ... sort of. Okay, well at least it tries to be different ... sort of. Okay, nevermind. It fits the new cliched prodigal-leads-the-choir-to-glory movie-making formula to a T -- can we leave it at that?
And although Cuba Gooding Jr. doesn't seem exactly comfortable in his comedic role of a con-man-turned-choir-director &, standing next to Beyonce, he looks more like a cradle robber than an eligible bachelor (who did the casting?!), the movie has a lot of funny moments, a lot of great music & a great feel-good message ... sort of. Okay, I know it's the exact same feel-good message that all the other lead-the-choir/save-the-church films have, but what were you expecting -- originality?
It's fun. It feels good. It's musical. And it works. Thank you very much & have a nice day.
A feel good movie!.......2006-10-10
Darrin (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) is hustler living in NYC. His youth was spent on the road accompanying his mother (Faith Evans) who was ostracized from their hometown church. It was found out one Sunday that Darrin's mom was singing R&B with suggestive lyrics. The strict rules of the church were enforced by Paulina who as the antagonist is successful in ridding of Darrin's mom.
Forward many years later, Darrin receives notice of his Aunt's passing. He makes the trek back to his hometown with big town attitude and swagger. He is revered as a hero, but in fact is a failure in sheep's clothing. His trip comes with an opportunity to cash (and save himself from debt) in on his Aunt's will. He is given authority to reconstruct the choir and enter them into a contest. With green on his mind, Darrin seeks out his quest to bring himself out of the red. He finds out more about himself, his family, and his hometown.
Though structurally not sound, the Fighting Temptations does provide funny moments with touching ones as well. Both Gooding and Beyonce Knowles play believable characters with substance. Mike Epps, Steve Harvey, Melba Moore, and Angie Stone round out a nice supporting cast.
Backed up with a joyous and emotional soundtrack, The Fighting Temptations is a good movie centered on the honesty (or dishonesty) of Darrin Hill and the hypocrisy of a small town church. When these negatives are ironed out though, the result is a congregation proud of their choir and proud of one of their own.
Fun and inspiring.......2005-11-19
This movie is definitely NOT BORING. Cuba is offthechain hilarious when he's directing the choir, like a crazed lunatic breakdancing, pew hopping, chandelier swinging choir director. Beyonce is amazing, the Ojays are great. The performances are musically and visually captivating. "He still loves me" at the end was a perfect finale. And I am usually hard on movies, but this one was really enjoyable. I bought it to replay the musical sequences. Oh and there is a nice little storyline in there too. and dat gurl look-ted good 2...

Product Description
The Gospel of John, the best-loved of the four Gospels, vividly comes to life in a faithful and powerful dramatization of the Biblical text. The Gospel of John meticulously re-creates the era of Jesus during a tumultuous period that changed the course of history. Starring Henry Ian Cusick as Jesus, and narrated by Christopher Plummer, and with a cast of over 2500, The Gospel of John has been adapted for the screen, word for word, base on the American Bible Society's Good News Bible, by Emmy-nominated John Goldsmith and is directed by acclaimed British director Philip Saville.

Wonderful.......2007-06-13
We saw this on TBN and loved it. So, we ordered it. Have watched it several times since the purchase. Amazon got it to us quicker than stated. Thanks Amazon.
John Tesh Captures Your Heart With His Worship DVD.......2006-03-17
I originally bought this DVD as a birthday present for my 21 year old daughter. Of course as a good dad, like her Christmas presents, I just had to "test drive" this DVD. Wow! After experiencing that, I had to get back on Amazon and get myself a copy right away.
John Tesh delivers an excellent selection of well known worship songs in a spectacular outdoor setting at the historic Red Rocks in Colorado, established as a park and amphitheater in 1941.
The scenery is majestic and stunning. The audience was clearly exhilerated and enjoying every minute of it. The band that John assembled is an all star cast of professional musicians with a choir of area church worship leaders. The bass player played with Jethro Tull. Neal Wilkenson, the drummer, played with Mike Rutherford of Genesis. Jim Sitterly is a concert violinist. The keyboard player was Carole King's arranger.
It was very touching to see John and Connie's young 9 year old daughter Prima sing with the choir.
This DVD is a smash hit. I've played it over and over again several times. The production quality is excellent. I also enjoyed the bonus segments with the interesting behind the scenes information and footage. Very cool... and a great investment for the entire family. If there were more than 5 starts, I'd give it. I highly recommend John Tesh's Worship At Red Rocks.
Worship at Red Rock.......2005-07-09
An excellent, well arranged, lively example of Christian music. Superb camerawork to show the beauty of Red Rock and the heartfelt involvement of the audience with the message. Well Done!!!
Five Stars Not Enough!.......2005-03-18
Okay I've watched this more than a dozen times and the emotional
impact never fades. As a longterm musician myself, I can tell you that the band are one of the most phenominally talented group of musicans I've ever heard. Multi-layered exquisite arrangements played by world class musicians- can it get any better. Yes it can because of the spirit and heart that drives it all. Superb! This will take you right into exalted worship.
High Praise for High Praise.......2004-09-05
You must experience "Worship At Red Rocks" on DVD to fully appreciate this inspirational praise concert in all its heavenly glory. The combined vocals of John Tesh, Christine Miller, Christina Rasch, along with a choral ensemble that includes Tesh's own 9-year-old daughter Prima, deliver harmonies that at times rise to the level of angelic, are always uplifting and full of joy. The vocal troupe is accompanied by some of the best musicians in the industry - Michael Ruff and John Tesh on keyboards, Gannin Arnold and Stan Sinclair on guitars, Tim Landers on bass guitar, Neal Wilkinson on drums, Jim Sitterly on violin.
Especially on the stirring song "Breathe", John Tesh still manages to gracefully carry a tune while overwhelmed with tears of joy.
Recorded in October 2003, "Worship At Red Rocks" is a timeless worship video worth watching over and over again.

Thus far I have never had a problem with purchasing from Amazon. When I see that the seller is Amazon I don't think twice about clicking the purchase button. I know that I am going to receive my shipments without any problems.

This DVD ministered to me like no other DVD has ever done before. I've always admired John P. Kee's work, but something about hearing his choir with a live band behind him really makes it that much better. There are 13 different performances from 6 different albums and I watch about 10 of them over and over again. If you want to listen to some uplifting gospel music with great vocals, this is the DVD for you.
Absolutely Blessed!.......2003-11-19
This came as no suprise to me, but this DVD is absolutely wonderful. As it implies, it is a greatest hits featuring some of John P. Kee and New Life's greatest performances of some of their greatest songs. This may not be a good investment for someone who owns all of their previous videos, unless you want an easy way to see the best parts without flipping through several videos to do so. My favorite parts include the "Wash Me", "Jesus is Real", and "We Walk By Faith" performances. It is also amazing to see the progress and change of the choir and John throughout the years. I can't stop without mentioning this: Dorinda tore it up on "We Walk By Faith" but what else can be expected from a Clark! As always, anything with John P. Kee in it is truly a blessing and anointed by God. Hallelujah!

I love this one! So true to the book of John. What a wonderful addition to my DVD library! I am still waiting for the book of Mathew to come out as it said on the video "coming soon". You won't be disapointed. This is so true to the Word. When you go back to your bible to read the book of John you will be able to better visualize everything because it's so well made.

Companion piece to the album of the same name!.......2007-06-30
This is a recording of a 2001 concert by John P. Kee and The New Life Community Choir, filmed in North Carolina. Kee's voice is in fine form and receives heavenly support from the choir on such familiar songs as "I Do Worship," "My Healing," "I Believe," and "Jesus." The accompanying band, including Kee's own son on drums, is a group of highly skilled musicians and provide outstanding backup.
Guests on the concert include the legendary Shirley Caesar and contemporary artist Tonex.
At over an hour, the DVD is engaging and entertaining throughout. Especially inspirational is the concept video of "The Wedding Song," featuring a not-so-young couple dating and ultimately getting married.
The only downside is the editing and matching of the audio and video. During one song, it appears that the soloist performing had her vocal added later, making her a tad out of sync. There is another instance where Kee is singing lead but in a split second an elderly man appears from out of nowhere, taking the reins of the song.
Thus, the DVD loses a star.
