Collateral offers a change of pace for Tom Cruise as a ruthless contract killer, but that's just one of many reasons to recommend this well-crafted thriller. It's from Michael Mann, after all, and the director's stellar track record with crime thrillers (Thief, Manhunter, and especially Heat) guarantees a rich combination of intelligent plotting, well-drawn characters, and escalating tension, beginning here when icy hit-man Vincent (Cruise) recruits cab driver Max (Jamie Foxx) to drive him through a nocturnal tour of Los Angeles, during which he will execute five people in a 10-hour spree. While Stuart Beattie's screenplay deftly combines intimate character study with raw bursts of action (in keeping with Mann's directorial trademark), Foxx does the best work of his career to date (between his excellent performance in Ali and his title-role showcase in Ray), and Cruise is fiercely convincing as an ultra-disciplined sociopath. Jada Pinkett-Smith rises above the limitations of a supporting role, and Mann directs with the confidence of a master, turning L.A. into a third major character (much as it was in the Mann-produced TV series Robbery Homicide Division). Collateral is a bit slow at first, but as it develops subtle themes of elusive dreams and lives on the edge, it shifts into overdrive and races, with breathtaking precision, toward a nail-biting climax. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Dark and Exciting.......2007-07-04

Tom Cruise does a fantastic job as a hired assassin who travels to Los Angeles to do some people in. The key to this tactic is that he holds a cab driver hostage so that he can be carried from target to target with relative ease. Within the film the cab driver named Max (Jamie Fox) keeps his wits about him while at the same time getting into some psychological and philosophical discussions with Vince (Cruise), as Vince almost seems like a friend at times to Max. Mark Ruffalo is also good cast as Detective Fanning, a perceptive investigator who can view the pieces of the puzzle but not quite put them all together, although he is farther ahead than the Feds, who realize too late that witnesses related to a case they are working on are being killed off one by one in a single night. Jade Pinkett Smith is also in the film and has a key role, so just fasten your seatbelt and crank the volume as Max and Vince roll out into the night! What can I say; director Michael Mann sure does know how to produce an action packed crime film!

5 out of 5 stars Simply mesmerising, what a movie!.......2007-05-22

This movie proves Tom Cruise is an actor par excellence.

Forget about Hollywood [...] like Top Gun - Cruise is a serious and remarkably talented actor. I was absolutely glued to the screen watching this movie; Cruise created an "air" and "presence" that was simply electrifying. *Note* The way Cruise "moves" through the crowded nightclub to acquire his target you would think He was the only person in the room.

Collateral is a stunning movie, a psychological/action thriller without compare.

Unfortunately, Collateral has never received the credit it truly deserves - it will, I have no doubt, become a classic.

I gave this movie five stars; I wish I could give it six.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome and beyond the box plot!!!.......2007-05-13

This movie has an awesome plot. How often do we see a movie from almost a hitman's perspective? The gun fighting and hand-to hand combat is pretty realistic. Tom Cruise does look like he knows what he is doing with his USP .45 ACP. Jamie Fox should probably be dead the way they both were shooting, but otherwise great movie. I like the views of LA and the whole town not just the part everyone sees. You can tell the director knew LA. Yes, I have been to LA use to live in CA. Plus the music made this just as much as anything, Air in G in the cab, and the Korean Club music were awesome adding to the mood. This a great movie with a different plot. Warning: may make you almost like Tom Cruise again!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great action/drama with superb acting.......2007-05-09

I'm not a big fan of action movies, or Tom Cruise, and the only other Michael Mann movie I've seen is Last of the Mohicans. I still should have known better than to wait three years to check out Collateral after the glowing reviews and Jamie Foxx's Supporting Actor Oscar nomination.

Tom Cruise shows that he really does have the acting chops to pull off a variety of roles as his portrayal of Vincent is quite a departure from the typical Cruise hero. He's got a different voice, walk, and attitude. And with the white hair and beard he's captivating to watch as he unstoppably takes on the sociopathic hired [...] role.

Jamie Foxx is equally engaging as Max, a big-dreaming cab driver that has never has the follow through to make any of his dreams happen. Collateral follows a night in Max's cab and the character arc that Max follows because of the events that transpire.

Jada Pinkett Smith has a smaller role, but still puts in some solid acting as a prosecuting attorney who rides in Max's cab.

The action and dialogue throughout Collateral are brilliantly played out and hard to turn away from. You won't want to miss a minute of the movie for fear of missing a cool special effect, a great acing moment, or just a quick plot point. The helicopter panning shots over the city of LA are pretty awesome too.

The second disc is full of special features, including a short about Tom Cruise dressing up as a FedEx worker in order to work on not being recognizable for the role of Vincent. There's also a making of featurette and a clip of rehearsals between Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx with director Michael Mann. It's all worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, well-crafted thriller.......2007-03-27

Collateral is a truly excellent and intelligent thriller. One of the most captivating movies I have seen since the start of the new Millennium. I am not a Tom Cruise fan, on the contrary I would say, but in his role of contract hitman Vincent he is very convincing. Jamie Foxx is impressive. I agree with a remark that I read somewhere that the city of Los Angeles plays the third leading role in this movie. Director Michael Mann creates a fascinating athmosphere. The photography is breathtaking. I was unable to focus on the action and found myself wandering away and simply gawking at the images of nighttime L.A. a couple of times. The brutal and for some characters fatal events seem small and unimportant and isolated when played out against the backdrop of this huge antheap of a city. This is surely a movie that you'll want to see more often than once. The violence is very brutal and explicit, but mercifully short and well spread out over the story. It is also very realistic and functional violence, not the bizarre and completely over-the-top superhero stuff that you see in too many movies nowadays, where the opponents constantly smash, stab and shoot each other into a bloody pulp and still manage to keep on fighting. Collateral therefore is not your typical run-of-the-mill action movie, but instead a well-crafted psychological thriller and police-movie. I absolutely recommend it.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's loyal fans get what they want in this routine but rousing revenge thriller, which pits the aging action star against a Colombian guerrilla terrorist. Schwarzenegger plays a Los Angeles fireman who witnesses the killing of his wife and young son, caused by the terrorist's bombing in a crowded L.A. pavilion. Despite intense scrutiny by FBI and CIA officials, Arnie infiltrates the terrorist's remote jungle compound, enlists the aid of the villain's seemingly trustworthy wife (Francesca Neri), and plots to foil another bombing in Washington, D.C. Director Andrew Davis (The Fugitive) maintains adequate plausibility even when Schwarzenegger's survival grows absurdly unlikely, and lively roles for John Turturro and John Leguizamo add welcomed spice to the movie's impressive display of military ordnance. Despite its formulaic plot and Arnold's advancing seniority, Collateral Damage still manages to pack an entertaining punch. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars It's Flex.......2007-02-04

Usually I like Arnold. But unfortunately Sylvester Stallone is far more ahead than Arnold when considering performance.A very good one to watch.

3 out of 5 stars Not one of Arnolds best movies..........2007-02-01

While this movie was entertaining, it definately is one of the weaker ones! My main issue is with the weak and unbelievable story line! While the action scenes are good, the story seems boring and like something we have seen many times before! An interesting twist or unusual plot line would have helped a lot! The overall mood seems mostly depresing to me!
I can only give this movie 3 stars!

3 out of 5 stars Better than expected, but not as good as it needs to be.......2006-04-12

Collateral Damage threatens to become a good film on several occasions but never quite makes it. Partially it's due to the post 9/11 re-editing that played down the innocent civilian casualties in Arnie's quest for vengeance on Colombia terrorists, but more because it seems that the script was probably rewritten a few too many times to accommodate the Austrian Oak. Some swipes at the duplicity and counterproductive nature of American intervention in South America survive as the war hits home, but the film is ultimately content to turn its revolutionaries into cardboard fanatics (not to mention throwing in a ridiculous scene with a snake in case we don't get the point) and go for the big bangs. Still one of its stars better pictures of the last 12 or so years, though.

4 out of 5 stars Not Arnold's best, but definitely one of his best! .......2006-02-06

This is a great movie. It follows a man named Gordy Brewer who wants a team of Columbian terrorists dead after they killed his wife and son. He gets into lots of fights as well as lots of trouble, all the while saving lives and joining teams. Soon, he saves another mom and son, only to find out later the mom is the terrorist leader who put all this together. He stops her & her sidekick from escaping, soon getting into a fight with both of them. It's a long, brutal and difficult battle, but in the end Gordy wins(what would you expect from Ah-Nold?)Anyway, if you like action movies or films about hope and care, then this is the film for you. It's not the very best, but it is good.

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely horrid!.......2005-07-24

I have to admit that I enjoy Arnold's movies and even like the ones that are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO UNREALISTIC like Commando. But, this one was absolutely horrid. The plot is lame, the action is lame, the suspense is lame, everything is lame. It was terrible! Arnold plays a firefighter bent on revenge after his son and wife are killed in an explosion. And of course, he kicks but. Anyway, I own this terrible movie and think about throwing it out of my window a lot. It's horrid!
It's not interesting, boring, repetitive and there is no suspense. Oh my gosh! Is the terrorist attack going to work? Of course not because Arnold the firefighter will save the world! I hated this terrible movie!

5 out of 5 stars Solid Arnold Double Feature DVD!.......2007-04-17

The original release date for Collateral Damage was October of 2001, forcing the studio to delay release for a couple of reasons.

For starters, the plot deals with foreign-born terrorism inside the U.S. and contains scenes of a Los Angeles restaurant being bombed, which in late `01 was still a bit raw for the public consciousness. However, adding to the time specific unease is the role Arnold Schwarzenegger portrays here - a firefighter, who early on is seen helping people frantic to escape from a building before the fire reaches them. Other than these two elements though, Collateral Damage has nothing to do with any real world event in any way.

The bad guys here are Columbian freedom fighters who, while targeting some covert U.S. government contacts for a fiery death, also manage to wipe out firefighter Gordon Brewer's wife and young son. Yes it's mostly that formulaic but it's also handled nicely and is a slight departure from what the world has come to think of as an 'Arnold movie'. Why, you ask? Mostly because this is an older and wiser Arnold who along with Director Andrew Davis is intent on getting across the theme of attempted revenge followed by redemption as opposed to the usual straight forward revenge. Although certain areas could have been stronger, overall it works well and entertains on exactly the shallow, over the top, action movie level it shoots for.

One of the high points for me was the great supporting cast, although my favorites were gone in a flash. John Turturro gets about three minutes of quality screen time as a Canadian equipment repairman who just happens to have an item that lead character Gordy Brewer needs to find the man who killed his family. As much as I like both actors, their time together here is less than compelling. John Leguizamo has considerable chemistry with Arnold but also exits quickly. At least he gets a proper send off. Elias Koteas also does a fine job as the main baddie.

Picture is Widescreen and looks super, the sound shines as well. Lots of extras for a 2in1 disc! The best is a short behind the scenes feature, but there are also deleted/alternate scenes and a quick piece about how 9/11 changed the public's perception of popular culture. Also a Director commentary and trailers.

Like I said, not your typical Ah-nold flick and an interesting time piece for some due to it's still slightly tenuous link to a depressing time in American history.

Eraser is very much an Ah-nold flick, replete with damsel in distress, ultra-futuristic high tech weaponry, dry one liners shouted over the sound of vehicles exploding and hair that just never, EVER moves. Also, none of that 'aging Firefighter' stuff here. As is the case in many of his films, Mr. Schwarzenegger takes on the role of a renegade law enforcement type. Specifically a U.S. Marshall who works in the Witness Security or... wait for it... WitSec Division. Oh yeah. You can see where this puppy is headed ten miles away and that's part of the magic.

Normally a flick like this would devolve predictably into a proper B-movie cliche fest, but due to a surprisingly strong (albeit silly) story and some anchoring performances by veterans, Eraser actually elevates at most of the right times to come through with only slightly hokey flying colors. The honorable James Coburn floats around the edges, popping in now and again to add gravitas. Robert Pastorelli hams it up, mostly near the end to add competent comedic relief. James Cromwell gets a small part but really goes out with a bang. Last but not least, James Caan stalks and growls his way to a praise worthy performance. He's the top dog here, even outshining Arnold in many places. I think Vanessa Williams might be in this too. JUST kidding. She does an OK job, certainly no better/worse than Halle Berry would have done. On the plus side, she's drop dead gorgeous and does manage hold her own in many scenes. That's it though.

Widescreen picture that looks very nice and great sound as well. No real bonus features though.

Can't find a thing to knock about this double feature DVD. 3 1/2 hours of solid Action entertainment. If you see this on sale and you're an Arnold fan, it's absolutely worth picking up.

    Description

Hi its me. I am not dead and our whole world has just changed. Scrap Metal. When I do remember. How an ant would feel walking around on Broadway. I want to be with my wife and kids but I cannot do it. Trucks are gone. I think I can handle it. It is still yesterday. I am contaminated. These few months of my life are not focused on them. Losing it. Fresh Kills Landfill. They sent the experts in. There's a little Buddha... he is supposed to keep me safe. Rigs ripped apart. I look forward to fires more than ever. To remember what I did. I feel like I have not seen it all and I am frightened about that. It has not really hit me. Maybe it will hit me one day.

Collateral Damages is about the psychological impact 9-11 had on NYC firefighters. Featuring firefighters from Engine 6, Rescue 2, and Engine 285, these men share personal testimonies of the emotional and mental anguish of an aftermath with no end. In addition to its hour-long feature, Collateral Damages has more than two hours of extensive special features, including the dismantling of the Rescue 2 rig and never before seen footage of Fresh Kills, the crime scene no one knew about.

For someone that worked down at Ground Zero for three months, this is the best story that has been told about Post Traumatic Stress and what firefighters, police officers and volunteers that worked down at ground zero are going through every day. Mount Sinai 9/11 World Trade Center Medical Monitoring Program should show this dvd to every rescue worker that worked down at ground zero.

    5 out of 5 stars A human view.......2006-10-05

The intensity of the subject without being emotional exploiting ; The honesty of a human perspective within a global tragedy makes this documentary one of the best I ever seen.

    5 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking..........2006-10-05

This is a story of how three FDNY firehouses dealt with the loss of their fellow firefighters who they ate with, lived with, fought fires with and laughed with... until 9/11.
One only needs to look into the faces of these men to see that the expression "boys" become "men", is taken a step further when we witness "men" who have become "MEN". They are a part of our history and a national treasure. You hear from the firefighters them selves, in detail, their experiences on that day and the days, weeks and months following. An unscripted, historical record of great importance. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars My Husband, Dr. Sean Breen!.......2007-06-15

I only sat in front of the TV and the internet to catch a glimpse of my husband as he served as a physician in Iraq for 9 months in the begining of the war, only to finally see the back of his head, 3 years later, as he transported Ali to another hospital. I never thought the back of his bald, white head, in a fraction-of-a-second clip, could make my heart jump like it did!, dispite the fact that this was filmed 3 years ago and I am just seeing in '07! I love that man! TYB.
