When you consider that old-fashioned tearjerkers are an endangered species in Hollywood, a movie like The Notebook can be embraced without apology. Yes, it's syrupy sweet and clogged with clichés, and one can only marvel at the irony of Nick Cassavetes directing a weeper that his late father John--whose own films were devoid of saccharine sentiment--would have sneered at. Still, this touchingly impassioned and great-looking adaptation of the popular Nicholas Sparks novel has much to recommend, including appealing young costars (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) and appealing old costars (James Garner and Gena Rowlands, the director's mother) playing the same loving couple in (respectively) early 1940s and present-day North Carolina. He was poor, she was rich, and you can guess the rest; decades later, he's unabashedly devoted, and she's drifting into the memory-loss of senile dementia. How their love endured is the story preserved in the titular notebook that he reads to her in their twilight years. The movie's open to ridicule, but as a delicate tearjerker it works just fine. Message in a Bottle and A Walk to Remember were also based on Sparks novels, suggesting a triple-feature that hopeless romantics will cherish. --Jeff Shannon

"What happens if a car comes?" "We die.".......2007-07-02
A must have! This is by far one of the best movies I've ever watched. After witnessing a few scenes from this movie I just had to go out and buy it and I don't regret it!
"The Notebook" breaks away from the typical kind of chick flick and adds a touch of humor. The movie adds more focus to the character's first Summer together, unlike the book which I found to be quite a snoozer. Also, the character's personalities seems more realistic and have more depth to them as you will discover during their heated arguements. Noah's personality is so dreamy and you can't help but fall in love with him over and over again.
I found many differences between the book and movie, but I won't spoil it for you if you haven't seen either. :3 This movie definately allows you to take a step back and appreciate the relationship you have with your loved one.
Awesome.......2007-06-27
Excellent movie ! A wonderful story about soul mates, soul mates for life. It will bring tears of happiness and sadness. Definitely a feel good movie.

My favorite movie!.......2007-06-22
I'm glad I finally got to buy this movie, it is one of my favorites. If you want to know what love could do to somebody and how powerful can be just watch this movie and you'll see what love is all about...
Just to let you know make sure you have a box of tissue handy, or maybe two haha!
Unforgettable Summer Romance.......2007-05-31
`The Notebook' is a sweet romance with a compelling story. The appeal easily develops with freewheeling dating scenes and revelations which unfold lovers sorting out priorities that hit so close to home. A bitter-sweet romance, the film is a beautiful tale of two sweethearts who come from completely different backgrounds but live in the same Southern town during the early forties.
Noah (Ryan Gosling) is from a dirt poor family and works as a logger for forty cents an hour. Allie (Rachel McAdams) belongs to the Southern aristocracy. She has private tutors for every class and most of her whims satisfied. It is love at first sight for Noah who spots Allie at a carnival and jumps between her and her chosen date from the platform of a Ferris wheel. Once he has her attention, he threatens to let go and fall to the pavement if she won't agree to date him. From there his colorful presence challenges every route she's ever known. They each bring a measure of deep beauty to each other: He recites poetry, and she creates paintings. All the oddball adventure he presents from lying down in the middle of a street to dare the traffic, letting go in a torrential rainstorm, to dancing in the street provide those defining moments that demonstrate how strangely people act when they are in love. As the summer ends their lives are disrupted: She is forced to go to Sarah Lawrence College in New York, and soon later he is drafted to fight in Europe during World War II. They split ways and find different lovers, but their relationship is truncated, especially when Allie's manipulative mother (Joan Allen) intercepts Noah's letters that are meant for her.
`The Notebook' is told from the point-of-view of "Duke" (James Garner) who reads the story of Noah and Allie to a beloved nursing home resident (Gena Rowlands) suffering from dementia. I kept thinking as they sit on a park bench in one scene that the story is retold in a manner not entirely different from 'Forrest Gump'. Duke narrates the story, and we come back to him and the woman until the two stories meet and have meaning.
Besides solid, absorbing performances by Gosling and McAdams, Garner softens the edge of the story as narrator, and Allen and Rowlands are easily captivating as Allie's complex and emotional mother and the elderly dementia patient. 'The Notebook' is a pleasing old-fashioned movie that easily plays on our heartstrings and provides a very satisfying viewing experience. (Based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks)

Classic series still holds up.......2007-05-07
This was a great series that's still entertaining today. The series is very high on the cheesey meter and so is the box set. I just wish that they actually put the episodes in order. But recommended none the less.
my hero.......2007-05-02
i have seen this great show in italy in my childhood (dubbed in italian) 2 decades ago and wow, i was about to cry when i found those dvd-series while i was browsing on amazon (.com, sadly not sold on amazon europe).
on a side note, the title of this show was "Ralph Super Maxi Eroe (Hero)" in italy. =)
Blast from the 80's.......2007-04-22
Although my review isn't as colorful as the 1st.. I do have to say that if you're looking for great family entertainment, then you won't be disappointed here. The show used to come on at 8pm on Wednesday nights. It was our family's mac & cheese night. I think it was the only night that we all ate dinner together. It has the crime/drama for the parents, and the action/hero stuff for the kids and comedy for all. It's definitely a family worthy show!
just what i ordered.......2007-04-12
brand new. got it in 2 days. what else could i ask for?
A fun series.......2007-04-08
Greatest American Hero certainly wasn't one of the all-time great tv series, but it was good in its time and it was fun to bring back memories of the early 80s by watching this DVD.
The three strengths of the show were the three character leads: William Katt played his role perfectly; Connie Selleca was also very good, and nice to look at; and Robert Culp was great in every "scenario". Sample Culp line, regarding Ralph's difficulty in flying:
"We'll get out one Saturday, we'll take a lunch maybe, do a few touch-and-gos, work out the kinks."

A posthumous homage!.......2006-02-15
When Nicholas Ray ` s creative spark was vanishing and the winter dreams arrived at the end of the road, Wenders inquired him to make the last documental-interview around his thoughts, points of view and other subjects in NYC .
Ray was dying of cancer but far to behave himself as a Romantic figure, Ray makes what a man must do: accept the death `s call and not to give up.
I still remember a smart statement of Bette Davis : "To get old is not for the weak people." And the undeniable talent of this German filmmaker this bold and painful testimonial will endure the sudden reverses of the forgetfulness and the fragile collective memory.
"The glory is the sun of dead" Balzac.

Prophetic........2004-01-23
My original interest in this movie was Wim Wender's take on his own art-form and how he would see it develop in the near future. In his narration for 'Notebook', he tells of how his fascination with video comes about partly through its then total absence of form and grammar. 15 years down the line that's no longer the case as the plethora of reality shows will attest to.
At the time he made this movie (the late 80's), Wenders was asking some searching questions about the future of video and digital film-making. Questions that would eventually be answered by Lars Von Trier and his Dogme 95 rules, i.e. 'The Idiots' and Thomas Vinterberg's 'Festen'.
In 'Notebooks' Wenders finds his 35mm camera cumbersome and imposing. In contrast his video camera is more flexible and seems to disturb no-one. This then is the main focus of the documentary, the stark contrast between two forms of film-making, symbolized by the constant juxtaposition of Paris and Tokyo in the same shot. Paris shot in the classical style of his 35mm camera, almost cliched in its romantic results, while Tokyo vibrates with garish colours and a shaky hand (which in its own way has become a cliched style over 10 years later).
In fact most of Wenders thoughts about the future of image-making have more or less come true. He believed that the future authors of film would be the makers of commercials, video clips, electronic games and computer programs. Sadly insightful.
Superbly thought provoking.......2004-01-06
I bought my own copy of this movie after renting it. Like Latcho Drom, it's something that I've watched more times than I can count; each time, I come away with something new. Here, the meditations on who we think we are, and the shaping power of place in forming our identities (a power that's really thrown into question in our ever-more-placeless times), encourage me to think again about my own identity, and what shapes it.
There are other pleasures here as well, springing forth from the collaboration of two deeply thoughtful people, Wenders and Yamamoto. Among them--thoughts about how clothes "make the man" (or person); the paradoxical idea of fashion as an art form; how many people's work goes into making one person famous as an "artist"; whether Eastern or Japanese ideas of artistic identity differ from Western ones; and much more--you're sure to find your own themes. Some of the music is a bit overblown, but that's my only, slight reservation. The pace might seem slow, but if you slow down with it and let it speak to you (and think WITH you), you're sure to come away with a richer perspective on much in life.
PS--the DVD version has a good commentary overlay by Wenders.
How to be an original in the postmodern world ..........1999-04-14
The director of WINGS OF DESIRE and PARIS,TEXAS follows Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto around Paris, France and Tokyo (two of Wenders' favorite cities)to find out whether the concept of originality still has meaning in a world where almost everything is a commercialized copy. Wenders depicts Yamamoto and his work in much the same way he treated director Nicholas Ray in LIGHTNING ON WATER and Japanese director Ozu in TOKYO-GA. Wenders shows how Yamamoto can be both original and humane in the unlikely environment of the fashion industry, which has a reputation for exploiting the bodies it displays and equips. If you are interested in the question of Art in the Age of Reproduction, you'll enjoy this film a great deal.

Product Description
Alfred Kinsey was a little-known biologist when, in the 1940s, he began compiling data from thousands of interviews about the sexual practices of men and women. The results of that research were the explosive "Kinsey Reports." Through interviews with his research assistants, his children, his biographers, and historians, this documentary assesses Kinsey's achievements, while examining how his personal life shaped his career.

Customer Reviews:
A VERY WELL DONE MOVIE!!!.......2005-06-27
MY GIRLFRIEND AND I WENT TO SEE THIS MOVIE THE WEEKEND IT HIT THEATRES, AND I HAVE TO TELL YOU...... I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A CHICK FLICK, BUT WE LOVED IT. SHE THOUGHT IT WAS VERY ROMANTIC AND SHE SAID SHE WANTED TO RECREATE SOME OF THE SCENES WITH ME WHEN WE GOT HOME. JACKPOT!!!!!!!!! ANYWAY, RYAN GOSLING AND RACHAEL MCADDAMS ARE TWO VERY TALENTED ACTORS, AND DESERVE A LOT OF CREDIT FOR THIS FILM. THE STORY IS WONDERFUL. BUY IT AS SOON AS YOU CAN!!!! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!!!
WOW!.......2005-05-17
This is by far the very best movie I have ever seen! It reminds me of my first love. It is very real. Everyone should see this movie. It's rare that a film comes a long that can make this kind of impression. It's not sappy (I'm not a fan of sappy) or corny. It's just very real...and very worth the money. I saw it in theaters and bought it the minute my local stores had it available for more than five minutes. (It sold out as soon as it was put on the shelves.) Buy it!
THE BEST MOVIE EVER.......2005-04-09
THIS MOVIE HAS BEEN THE BEST MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY 20 YEARS OF LIVING!!!!! IT'S SO CUTE AND SAD!!! I WOULD GIVE THIS MOVIE ALL THE STARS IN THE WORLD!!! RYAN AND RACHEL DID A VERY GOOD JOB IN THIS MOVIE. MAD PROPS TO THEM BOTH!! THIS MOVIE WAS OUTSTANDING!! #1 MOVIE OF ALL TIMES! I DON'T THINK ANYTHING CAN OUTBEAT THIS MOVIE!!
