The chameleon-like actor Kevin Spacey is best known for playing pyschopaths (in Seven and The Usual Suspects) and capturing a creepy mid-life crisis in American Beauty--but surprisingly, playing crooner Bobby Darin, Spacey does some snappy dancing and top-notch singing. Beyond the Sea puts Darin's life through a bit of a kaleidoscope: While singing Darin's most memorable hit, "Mack the Knife," Darin suddenly stops the show, revealing that he's not at a nightclub, but in the middle of a shooting a scene about his life as a nightclub performer. Why has he stopped? Because he's just seen himself as a young boy, peering from behind a curtain. Such self-conscious narrative twists recur throughout the movie, turning Darin's fight for fame and respect into a love story between his adult and childhood selves. Sandra Dee (Kate Bosworth, Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!), a hugely popular movie star in her own right, was supposedly the love of Darin's life, but she never holds his attention as does his childhood self (played by newcomer William Ullrich). It's a striking metaphor for the narcissism that drives such success-hungry entertainers. But despite (or perhaps because of) the complexity of the telling, the events never grip your emotions; though Darin's life featured hits galore and a few soap opera twists, his story lacks the seductive charm of his nighclub show. Also featuring Bob Hoskins, John Goodman, Brenda Blethyn, and Greta Scacchi. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars The story telling may be a little off center, but Spacey is in true form and more than makes up for it..........2007-06-21

Kevin Spacey definitely carries this entire film on his very supportive back. The film falls short in brilliance where a biopic is concerned but it excels in brilliance when entertaining the idea of a musical, a genre that is very hot or miss. Spacey is infectious as he plays his real life idol Bobby Darin. His moves are crisp and his voice is effortlessly beautiful to listen to. The script though fails to truly uncover the man that was Bobby Darin. We see his relationship with screen legend Sandra Dee, played by the beautiful Kate Bosworth, but we never really understand it. The film seems to be more focused on telling the relationship between Darin's adult self and his child self, played by newcomer William Ullrich.

Bosworth is notably fantastic as Sandra Dee though, her emotion fully invested in a character that is sadly left a little two-dimensional. Bob Hoskins also shines; an actor who just continues to amaze me with every performance, each more poised and promising than the last, and here as Darin's brother-in-law he does a beautiful job juggling protective, compassionate and judgmental. Caroline Aaron and the splendid Brenda Blethyn also illuminate their scenes, but no one is able to stop the tidal wave that is Kevin Spacey in full on shiny luminescent glory.

The film, a dream project of Spacey's, follows Darin as he devotes himself to making a motion picture musical chronicling his life. This I feel was done so that Spacey, an actor quite a bit older than Darin was in his prime, could justify starring in the film. Darin in his older years is now starring as himself in his younger years in a film telling his life story. I may have made it sound too complicated but it's not. The set pieces are spectacular, the musical numbers are extraordinary and the acting as a whole is fulfilling and right on point. The story telling itself though is a bit off.

I recommend this biopic for the music itself, a true testament not only to the brilliance in the acting but also to the legend that is Bobby Darin, and Spacey here has created a wonderful example of how to reintroduce music of old to a new generation. Spacey's determination and dedication to his performance makes every word jump out at you, makes every line swim in your ears for hours on end. Even scenes as corny as his `Rub-a-Dub-Dub' music video are done with enough humor and sass that the audience is forced to appreciate it for what it is.

`Beyond the Sea' may not be the most effective of the biopic's, and coming out in a year that sported some wildly successful and critically appraised films such as `The Aviator' and `Ray' may not have helped it none, but here is a classic example of an actor taking his passion for a performer, a legend and an inspiration and creating a whole knew feel from it. To me Spacey one up's Foxx's Oscar winning performance by investing his very soul into Bobby. Spacey didn't merely impersonate the man but he recreated him within himself and gave us Spacey the performer, the actor and the legend. As a musical showcase `Beyond the Sea' sizzles and shines and is worth every fun filled minute.

5 out of 5 stars A Vanity Project? Or Labor of Love?.......2007-05-23

I reacted to the announcement that Kevin Spacey was to play Bobby Darin with approval. Although he was about a decade older than the 60s crooner ever lived to be, and his age showed a bit, Spacey (who successfully won an Oscar whereas Darin was only nominated for one) quite deftly engaged in the art of personification. He looks enough like Darin, although Darin's chin was narrower.
Spacey helms an occassionally surreal account of Darin's life, beginning with a backstage view of his venue in Las Vegas, during which the singer takes a detour, and presides over a telling of his own remarkable life story.
Newcomer William Ullrich portrays the young Walden Robert Cassotto (a.k.a Darin's not-so-inner child throughout the course of the film), a child of the Bronx who lives with Nina and Charlie Maffia (Bob Hoskins and Caroline Aaron) and the doting Polly Cassotto (Brenda Blethyn), from whom he inherits his love of music. It would be years later that the singer would be devastated by the revelation of a family secret.
In the meantime, he builds his reputation as a performer, taking those closest to him along for the ride. He acquires a manger named Steve Blauner(John Goodman), and works his way from seedy nightclubs to more upscale venues. Spacey's recreation of Darin's signature performances is admirable. One really has to listen hard to be able to differentiate between the original recordings and the reproductions made for this film.
Tragedy strikes as Darin's recordings climb the charts. Still, the singer perseveres, making appearances on national televison, winning a Grammy, and beginning a film career, during which he meets America's Golden Girl, Sandra Dee (Kate Bosworth), with whom he feels he can make even more beautiful music if he can lure her away from her controlling mother, Mary Duvan (Greta Scacchi). Spacey shows impressive dancing skills in the process of getting the girl.
Before long, Darin has won his prize, but in an emotional scene that relies on a viewer's awareness of Dee's survival of incest, the bride has an anxious moment, which her groom nobly redeems.
The Darins have a son named Dodd, and the honeymoon ends soon enough during an Oscar Night brawl in which the couple become violent over incredibly petty issues. One feels dismayed that people who appear to have been given everything in life can't at least behave themselves!
Still, as Darin strives towards his goal to play at the Copacabana, one may come to empathize with him since a childhood bout with rheumatic fever weakened his heart, and he knew his time was limted.
As the 60s wear on, and social changes ensue, Darin, a politically conscious entertainer who, earlier helped desegregate a nightclub, struggles to stay relevant. Amid Sandra's increasing problems with the bottle, and his being a hands-on Dad to his son, Darin refurbishes his act with songs that are more topical, and makes plans to join Senator Robert Kennedy in his bid for the Presidency. Nina drops a bombshell on Bobby, regarding his family history (in order to beat the media to the punch), sending him into a tailspin, and he spirals even harder and deeper when RFK is assassinated.
In real life, Darin could be be found lying at Kennedy's grave, but the film ignores this. It focuses on his desertion of his family, his soul-searching, his reconciliation with his family(although it neglects to mention a short-lived second marriage), and the triumphant revival of his career at the Flamingo in Las Vegas before the curtain prematurely falls...
This film may be viewed some as a vanity project, as it was something Kevin Spacey had wanted to do since he and his late mother (to whom the film is lovingly dedicated) were fans of Darin's. He definitely dominates the project, but omits the presence of Darin's half-sister, Vee, who was with him at the end. But it is an apparent labor of love in which Darin's ex-wife (who happily lived long enough to see the film's release) and son had some input.
It does capture the salient points of Darin's life, and it's more than obvious that Spacey had fun playing off of the sassily precocious Ullrich, especally in the final dance number. I feel glad that Spacey's dream came true! He was born to play the part!
The child from the Bronx may have died; the legend lives, and through the eyes of a devoted fan, Bobby Darin is forever swinging at the Flamingo!

2 out of 5 stars Darin Deserves Better.......2007-04-13

I grew up with Darin watching him on Bandstand in the fifties and as he developed into quite a wonderful "crooner," an adult singer. I have loved his "That's All" album through the years, through thick and thin.

I'm glad Spacey brought this man more recognition. But Spacey was way too old for the film; Darin died at 37. Kate Bosworth as Sandra Dee is not in Spacey's league as an actor and it was painful to watch her on the screen. It brushed off his early rock and roll years which had great stuff like Artificial Flowers and Clementine (already showing Darin's turning to jazz and more "pop" tunes, like Sinatra).

The story was scattered all over the place. But Spacey's singing was terrific, if not exactly like Darin's. (Sissy Spacek really nailed Loretta Lynn in Coal Miner's Daughter.)

This picture was a "what might have been" rather than a good biopic.

Yes, Bobby deserved much better than this. But I give Spacey an e for effort.

5 out of 5 stars "An outstanding biopic".......2007-04-01

"Beyond The Sea" is a treat for both the eyes & ears-Kevin Spacey did an excellent portrayal of the late great Bobby Darin-Darin did not limit himself to a single musical genre-He could sing rock and roll, standards, country,& folk-As a matter of fact, one of his last releases in that vein was "Sing A Simple Song Of Freedom"-"Beyond The Sea" chronicles the volatile relationship between Darin & actress Sandra Dee,played to perfection by Kate Bosworth-Although Darin only lived to be 37,he certainly left behind an outstanding body of work-If you're a die hard Bobby Darin fan,you owe it to yourself to purchase this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie and Spacey is outstanding.......2007-03-12

I love this movie, not because of Bobby Darin, but because of Spacey. His singing and dancing remind me of Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire - he's not as great a dancer as these two, BUT I enjoyed the movie as much as Kelly's and Astaires. Maybe the movie did skip over important parts of Bobby Darins life (according to the die hard Darin fans), but for the average person, this movie is delightful and Spacey is well worth watching.

4 out of 5 stars Not for Tourism.......2007-01-10

This was not exactly what I expected. Since I've been planning a trip Down Under, I thought the movie would showcase some of the more popular places that people would visit, so I could get a visual of what I was hoping to see while there. Instead I got more of a National Geographic flora/fauna of the outback, perspective. It is a great film about the outback, its wildlife and climate, but for tourism information it doesn't have what I was looking for to help plan my trip.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Present for a Traveler.......2006-11-04

I gave this DVD as a birthday present to a friend who was planning a trip to Australia within a couple of months. I have not seen the documentary and can only comment on my friend's reaction to watching it frequently before her trip. She was pleased with the information, scenery, and especially the animals on the film. She has a hectic schedule and little time for TV and films. However, she commented several times how much she was enjoying this DVD. She's in Australia now, so I'll have to wait until she returns to find out if it helped her during the trip.

    AUSTRALIA THE BEAUTIFUL
    DISCOVERING AUSTRALIA
AUSTRALIA - THE LAND BEYOND TIME

These movies are all informative, and Australia itself is of course gorgeous. Some people seem to think the only things in Australia are kangaroos, koalas, Aborigines, Crocodile Dundee, and Steve Irwin feeding his baby to the crocodiles. Students in China will ask you "What is the weather like in Australia?" as if a country roughly the size of China or the USA has the same weather from east to west and north to south. These films will show you otherwise, but it is annoying that I can't find a single DVD about Australia made by Australians. These are distinctly American, even though the third has a British narrator.

    4 out of 5 stars Beautiful film.......2006-08-27

Very good film about Australia. I would have liked more scenes and info about marsupials and other exotic Australian animals, but any how, this is a great documentary. Totally recommended.

    Land yes, people no.......????
this video shows the beautiful and interesting land and land creatures of the continent but fails to show that it is inhabited at all. I expected some views of the aboriginals and their history, some mention at least. But by watching this video you have no idea that humans exist on the continent AT ALL!
I loved the segments of the formation of the continent, the kangaroos, the birds... but after 30 minutes of this I expected to see the Great Barrier reef, the inhabited areas and some other aspects of Australia. I was left very unfulfilled. Too bad.

When Maureen McGovern sang the torchy hit "The Morning After" in the original Poseidon Adventure, this probably wasn't what she had in mind. But for viewers, this post-disaster disaster film--which takes place immediately after the original Poseidon capsized--is fearlessly campy and surprisingly entertaining. As per the recipe for '70s catastrophe movies, Beyond the Poseidon Adventure (directed and produced by the original's Irwin Allen) boasts a top-notch ensemble cast. Michael Caine is the crusty, opportunistic tug captain who comes across the wreck of the Poseidon and immediately declares, "Salvage! Salvage is our salvation." Along for the ride on Caine's tug are Karl Malden and a still ingénue-ish Sally Field. They meet up mid-ocean with the suave doctor/rescuer Telly Savalas, who may not be all he says he is. And inside the wreck, incredibly, there are survivors. The film may follow a fairly predictable formula by this time (1979), but it's fun nonetheless. The effects are just right, there's plenty of treachery and tension to keep things moving along merrily, and the capsizing of the boat means the set consists of upside-down ship innards (blessedly, this also means the shag carpeting is on the ceiling, rarely seen). Families and couples are wrenched apart, unscrupulous bastards reveal hearts of gold, and the plucky ones (almost) always survive. Among the rest of the cast are Shirley Jones as the Poseidon's nurse, Peter Boyle as a passenger and concerned dad, and a baby-faced Mark Harmon as a farming kid from "back home" in Iowa, cute as the early-years Beatles. Extras include a vintage making-of featurette (perms! elephant bells!) and a montage of the era's disaster-film trailers, a movie-buff time capsule in itself. --A.T. Hurley

    2 out of 5 stars Annoying movie.......2007-05-07

The DVD quality was fine, but the movie was boring and unnecessary. I loved the original, so I was hoping this sequel would be good but is wasn't. There wasn't anything original about it, and I couldn't wait for it to end.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the original, but..........2007-04-21

Granted, "Beyond the Poseidon Adventure" is not as worthwhile as "The Poseidon Adventure, that preceded it in 1972, but still, taking it as a separate movie and by itself, it is not so bad after all.

Starring Michael Caine, Karl Malden, Sally Field, Peter Boyle, Telly Savalas among many others, with a cast like this there is still juice to it, even if the story is a bit weak and shaky.

The premise of it all, is the rescue by a fisher boat of possible survivors on board of the upside-down, but not as yet, sunken "Poseidon".

Soon though a gang of hoodlums also appear and they have absolutely no intention at rescuing people, but rather steal dangerous weapons that were carried in the cargo bay of that ship.

The problems start when the two groups meet and soon thereafter the ship starts to give obvious signs of its sinking...

The rest is up to you, to find out.

The transfer is decent and far better than its VHS counterpart, that only gave you a third of the scope of the entire movie.

The sound isn't Stereo anymore, as for the original picture, it is plain 2-channel Mono, but clear enough to be enjoyed.

This is not a Drama as "The Poseidon Adventure", it is a well-meant adventure movie, with some tense moments distributed here and there.

It is a very typical product of its times though (we are talking of the late seventies here) and as such it is still better than some cheesy pictures we are getting nowadays.

For its worth, it is money well spent.

2 out of 5 stars For fans of disaster movies only.......2007-03-21

I grew up watching these all star disaster movies and even if this one is bottom of the barrel, it's fun to watch. If you want something that makes sense look someplace else, but if very bad disaster movies are your thing then kick back and enjoy.

In 1978, when film critic Roger Ebert interviewed Irwin Allen, the mega-producer suggested a potential story idea for a planned sequel to "The Poseidon Adventure"...The survivors of the Poseidon disaster would be rescued and taken to land in Italy where they would be placed on a train which would go through a tunnel in the Alps. The tunnel would collapse and everyone would be trapped under the mountain. Ebert thought it was an excellent idea. And as it turns out Mr. Allen should have went with it. Because the movie he wound up making is an idiotic waste of time; ranks among the worst sequels ever made; and marked the beginning of the end of Allen's reign as the "Master of Disaster." Side note: Allen directed this mess and, as "Beyond TPA" star Michael Caine said in his autobiography, good ol' Irwin should have stuck to producing! Worth a look for "Poseidon" fans, but that's about it.
