5 out of 5 stars In A Time When There Were No Shades Of Gray ..........2007-04-14

As a child of the 1950's, I spent many a Saturday at the local movie house where, for a quarter, we were out of our mothers' hair for a big chunk of the day being entertained, generally, by a program that included some previews, a couple of cartoons, two features and an old serial chapter, often from the 1930's. These were often my favorite parts! It was how I discovered things like Gene Autry and his horseback good-guys battling underground aliens from the planet of Moravia, etc. Long before Disney's version of Zorro (starring Guy Madison) hit TV, I learned about Zorro and his Robin Hood-esque exploits in the old Republic serials shown then. This DVD, packaged and sold by Marengo Films (www.marengofilms.com), covers one of the many 12-chapter Zorro serials produced by Republic Studios -this one back in 1939.

Starring Duncan Reynaldo as the double sided hero (only unrecognizable behind his mask by the same folks who couldn't see that Clark Kent was Superman in a suit and tie), John Carrol and Reid Howes - and delightfully flourished by one of the black and white screens truly great bad guys, Noah Beery, Jr., the plot revolves around control of a railroad. The plot is less important, I think, than the ways in which this serial masterfully represents an entire, and now obsolete, genre of what were called cliffhangers. As each chapter ends, Zorro (or his love interest played by Helen Christian) is in some imminent jeopardy - literally about to fall off a cliff, be run over by a train, be hung by the nasty Commandante or about to be skewered by the maladept Sgt. Garcia - Yet, each new chapter begins similarly to the way the one before it ended - but just differently enough to allow for a quick but definitive escape from the likely demise suggested by the previous ending.
Thus the formula for the serials.

Also characteristic of this type of matinee entertainment - whether shown when first produced in the 1930's or when I saw them as a kid in the 1950s or as a DVD here in the 21st Century- is that in these black and whites there is no gray. The Commandante is not just bad, he is ALL bad . Zorro and his sidekick are not just good, they are ALL good. As kids, I suppose what we learned was that no one wore gray hats - they were black or white - that the world was populated with really good people and really bad ones. Today, as naive as that compartmentalization appears, it is informative historically. Even Hollywood has relegated most of such clearly dichotomous narratives to the world of animation - and even there, crossover can sometimes be found between the good and the bad. But, in Zorro Rides Again there is no question about it.

Nothing can be viewed clearly or understood separate from it's context. Thus it is with this serial. By today's standards, the stagings are primitive, the dialogue unsophisticated and the plot development entirely predictable. While these characteristics would, if applied to any contemporary film effort, result in truckloads or earned criticism, in this 1939 serial - produced as Europe was deeply immersed in the evil that was Nazi Germany and as the United States struggled to eschew military involvement- the simplifications make sense and are reflective of the mores, beliefs and entertainment needs of the public at the time.

Directed for Republic by William Whitney and John English, the 12 chapters run back-to-back for a total of 210 minutes.
Keep in mind though, that this is NOT how they were intended to be seen. As first offered to the public, the intent was for people to leave the theater and go back to living a full week of their real lives between each and every episode. I haven't taken the time to watch it that way - but, now that I think about it, it might be fun!

1 out of 5 stars Not the swashbuckling Zorro you'd expect.......2004-06-22

I wish I could give this DVD a favorable review. Unfortunately, I cannot. If you are expecting the Zorro of the 1820's of Southern California who fought against tyranny, you won't find him here. Nor will you find the Capitan or Sgt. Garcia. This is the story of Zorro's descendant. *cough* The acting leaves much to be desired. So does the script. His Zorro costume is not what I expected. The mask is pathetic. It doesn't look like the Zorro mask most of us know it to be. The picture on the cover is misleading. You're better off watching the Disney version of Zorro starring Guy Williams. Sorry to sound so harsh, but I am sorry I wasted my money on this DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Bold as his Blade! Wild as his Whip!.......2006-01-08

That was the tag line for the movie posters, although there's not a sword in sight in this movie. This was the first of the many Zorro-type serials, and the first collaboration of William Witney and John English, the consensus all-time-best serial directors. It's not quite as good as "Zorro's Fighting Legion" or "Zorro's Black Whip" (which wasn't about Zorro at all), but still worthwhile. This Zorro is James Vega, the great-grandson of the original Zorro called by his uncle to help the railroad of which he is part owner. No one knows his identity except his faithful companion Renaldo, played as an old man by Duncan Renaldo.

John Carroll was a handsome young actor whom Witney and English hated to work with because of his supersize ego. He had run away from home at the age of 12, later drove race cars in Europe, and worked as a stunt man in the early 30's. MGM considered him a potential rival to Clark Gable, but that never quite worked out. No matter, wise investments in land and the shrimping industry left him a wealthy man when he retired from films in the late 1950's. The tension between him and Whitney/English doesn't show up on screen, however; Carroll does a very good job, especially when he's pretending to be a fop.

Probably the best acting in this film comes from Noah Beery, Sr. With his magnificent basso profundo speaking voice he's the archtypical Western villain. Richard Alexander (Prince Barin in "Flash Gordon" and the mute henchman in "SOS Coast Guard") is also quite good as Beery's go-to bad guy El Lobo. Helen Christian plays a co-owner of the railroad who is disgusted with James Vega because he apparently never stands up for them. Of course, at the very end, after being appalled by him throughout the whole picture, they are about to get together. This apparently was the only movie Helen Christian ever made--she married RKO short-subject producer and retired. Yakima Canutt did all the stunt work so you know it was good.

There's one obvious cheat in this one, which is not typical of Witney/English serials. At the end of Chapter 10 Zorro loses his balance on the edge of a tall building, topples backward, and falls straight down. In the next chapter he was merely jumping from one building to another when he slips, catches onto a ledge, uses his whip to swing to the next window, and escapes.

3 out of 5 stars Early Zorro.......2000-06-10

Adapted from the serial or not this was an action serial and belongs to those days, Don't compare and you will enjoy. I didn't like Zorro singing, Yakima Canutt did all the stunt work and they cheated the kids on some the cliffhanger endings, but it was an enjoyable one with a good story line.

5 out of 5 stars ZORRO LOVERS THIS MOVIE ROCKS.......1999-10-12

Description

Zorro Rides Again debuted in 1937, and was the first serial from the Golden Age of Republic Studios. Taking place in then-modern day Mexico, John Carroll starred as James Vega, a descendant of the famous masked avenger Zorro, who dons the costume of his ancestor to battle a gang of outlaws trying to wrangle control of the California-Yucatan Railroad, under the control of a greedy financier (Noah Beery). Unlike in the days of his ancestor, these villains have trains, planes and automobiles at their disposal to make their getaway. Can the new Zorro bring this surly gang to justice?

Directors William Witney and John English went to direct sixteen more serials after Zorro Rides Again.

"Zorro is the ultimate folk hero. My thanks to the Roan Group for bringing this vintage Zorro to us and for carving a new Z into the world of DVD." - Alice Cooper, 2004

4 out of 5 stars Too bad they don't make movies like this today.......2005-12-16

This is one of the many vintage serials from the 1930s. In this action-packed 12 chapter serial, A sinister businessman and his henchmen try to stop a california raliroad line. In an effort to thwart these evil plans, The great grandson of Zorro, James Vega [John Carroll], Dusts off his Grandfather's Zorro outfit and he rides to the aid of his business partners. The Zorro here is slightly different than the Zorro that's seen in the usual Zorro movies. The Zorro here is not Don Diego De La Vega, He doesn't wear a cape, He doesn't carry a sword [Sorry, No swordfights in this serial], And his mask is much bigger and it covers up pretty much all of his face. But, Other than that, This was a nice fun serial that's full of action. The budget might not be big like the movies you see today but hey let's not forget, This was 1937, At this time, There was really little technology available to make films look elaborate, So you shouldn't really be shocked to see the cheapness of this film. But, For Zorro fans and Serial lovers and collectors, This film is sure to please. This serial's available at affordable prices on dvd for those who don't wanna spend over $15 on this serial.

4 out of 5 stars The "modren" Zorro...........2005-09-06

One of the better Republic serials, "Zorro Rides Again" centers around James Vega. great-grand son of Don Diego Vega, the original Zorro. Like Diego, James frustrates his friends by posing as a lazy good-for-nothing. But when there's trouble he dons the mask of Zorro, fighting evil with his trusty six-shooters and whip...No sword tho.

This serial is a lot of fun, but if you want a more traditional Zorro, I suggest "Zorro's Fighting Leigon"... but this one is sure to please serial fans. Keep an eye out for Duncan "Cisco Kid" Renaldo in his supporting role as Zorro's confidant.

      5 out of 5 stars "The King of Serials...VCI Entertainment ~ Zorro's Cliffhanger Collection".......2005-11-28

VCI Entertainment and Republic Pictures present three outstanding serials with 36 Chapters starting with "Zorro Rides Again" (1937)..."Zorro's Fighting Legion" (1939) and "Zorro's Black Whip" (1944) (Dolby digitally remastered), exciting Chapters of vintage serials loaded with thrilling drama and high adventure sequences....there is a great deal of entertainment here for the cliffhanger fans out there... It has more of everything with lots of action, hard riding chases and plenty of shootouts...Republic Pictures stuntman assistant director Yakima Canutt and his department of stunt people Tom Steele, Dale Van Sickel, Babe DeFreest, Helen Thurston, James Fawcett, Ted Mapes, Ken Terrell make every scene and episode a cliffhanger...each episode gets closer to the climatic ending, watch this and relive those thrilling yesteryears of the Saturday Matinee.

First up with Disc One is "Zorro Rides Again" (1937)...12 Chapters under director's John English and William Witney, producer Sol C.
