Steven Spielberg's deeply flawed but sporadically fun and moving update of the Peter Pan legend stars Robin Williams as the grown-up Pan, a corporate-takeover type who must embrace his old identity in order to save his kids from Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman). The stars put on a good show, including Hoffman's read of Hook's hysterical personality, Julia Roberts mini-turn as a tiny Tinker Bell, and Maggie Smith's touching performance as the aged Wendy. The visual contrast between the adult Pan's bustling outside world and the insulated fantasy of Neverland is striking, but Spielberg's ideas about the Lost Boys--politically correct in their ethnic diversity, energetic on skateboards--are contrived and cheapening. On the plus side, the story's theme about adults finding their innocence again through their children is very touching (though some people have found it cloying). If you can look beyond the glaring problems, there's plenty to like here. --Tom KeoghProduct Description

Maybe "nobody's perfect," as one character in this masterpiece suggests. But some movies are perfect, and Some Like It Hot is one of them. In Chicago, during the Prohibition era, two skirt-chasing musicians, Joe and Jerry (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon), inadvertently witness the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. In order to escape the wrath of gangland chief Spats Colombo (George Raft), the boys, in drag, join an all-woman band headed for Florida. They vie for the attention of the lead singer, Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe), a much-disappointed songbird who warbles "I'm Through with Love" but remains vulnerable to yet another unreliable saxophone player. (When Curtis courts her without his dress, he adopts the voice of Cary Grant--a spot-on impersonation.) The script by director Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond is beautifully measured; everything works, like a flawless clock. Aspiring screenwriters would be well advised to throw away the how-to books and simply study this film. The bulk of the slapstick is handled by an unhinged Lemmon and the razor-sharp Joe E. Brown, who plays a horny retiree smitten by Jerry's feminine charms. For all the gags, the film is also wonderfully romantic, as Wilder indulges in just the right amounts of moonlight and the lilting melody of "Park Avenue Fantasy." Some Like It Hot is so delightfully fizzy, it's hard to believe the shooting of the film was a headache, with an unhappy Monroe on her worst behavior. The results, however, are sublime. --Robert HortonDescription
When Chicago musicians Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) accidentally witness a gangland shooting, they quickly board a southbound train to Florida, disguised as Josephine and Daphne, the twonewestand homeliestmembers of an all-girl jazz band. Their cover is perfect...until a lovelorn singer (Marilyn Monroe) falls for Josephine, an ancient playboy (Joe E. Brown) falls for Daphne, and a mob boss (George Raft) refuses to fall for their hoax! Harry Hook's adaptation is not as faithful to the William Golding novel as you'd wish (they excised the Lord of the Flies dialogue with Simon!) and because of it, the movie is less allegorical and less resonant. A group of young men from a military academy are stranded on an island. The group quickly becomes fractious with a passive section led by Ralph, trying to get rescued, and a hunter faction, led by Jack, trying to procure meat and "have fun." Peter Brook's 1963 filming seemed to get closer to the Darwinist sense of this cultural disintegration. Here, the hunter faction seems more like Peter Pan's Lost Boys than the bloodthirsty murderers they are. The performances, particularly young Getty, don't quite carry the weight of the situation. It's still, however, sobering to slowly watch the school uniforms traded for war paint, and the little boys turn into little savages. --Keith SimantonDescription
With 'sharply expressive performances (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone) by its young cast, this stunning adventure explores the deep dark corners of the human soul, as a group of adolescent castaways are thrust into an intense world where law and accountability are governed by the rules of survival. After a harrowing plane crash into the sea, a group of American military cadets finds itselfmarooned on a deserted island. Realizing the minimal chances of being rescued, the boys band together out of fear and desperation. But as the island paradise becomes their own, competition and power struggles split them into two packs. Ralph (Bathazar Getty) leads one group and preaches civilized ingenuity and togetherness, but Jack (Chris Furrh) wants nothing of it and builds a faction of barbaric hunters who ultimately go to war with Ralph. This powerful shift in conscience transforms ordinary kids into primal killers, setting off a devastating battle of good versus evil and presenting a haunting metaphor for the savage in us all.Customer Reviews:

A shameful chapter in American history is powerfully dramatized in Rosewood, but moviegoers in 1997 may not have been ready for the African American equivalent of Schindler's List. And while the massacre that occurred in the nearly all-black town of Rosewood, Florida, in 1922 cannot compare in scale to the Nazi holocaust, it potently illustrates the same issues of racism and inherited intolerance that percolate at every level of human existence. An estimated 40 to 150 blacks were killed in Rosewood by an all-white lynch mob from the neighboring town of Sumner, where a white woman falsely claimed she'd been assaulted by a black man. The resulting mayhem ignited a tinderbox of resentment toward the flourishing citizens of Rosewood, and those few who survived were so traumatized that they remained silent until the truth was revealed by an investigative journalist in 1982.The film is blessed with richly authentic production design, lush cinematography, and a subtly effective John Williams score, and director John Singleton and screenwriter Gregory Poirier embellish the truth of Rosewood with a fictional hero named Mann (Ving Rhames), who arrives to buy a five-acre plot coveted by Rosewood's white grocer (John Voight). The emerging trust between these two characters--and the fate of an extended family led by a defiant father (Don Cheadle)--gives shape to the movie's devastating depiction of racism and the courage of those who opposed the lynch mob's brutality. Singleton and Poirier fall prey to some bad dialogue and a broadly unbalanced depiction of bloodthirsty hayseeds, but the film's passion is maintained by its superb cast and the timeless echoes of history. --Jeff Shannon
Description
In 1982 a reporter visiting Levy County in Florida noticed a lack of black residents. So he asked questions and a long-ago tragedy came to light. John Singleton directs Jon Voight and Ving Rhames in this powerful true drama. It is January 1, 1923 in Rosewood, but in this largely black town built on family, faith and hard work, hopes for the new year abruptly end. In a few harrowing nights, a white mob razes Rosewood into oblivion. As the rampage gains cataclysmic force, a heroic World War I veteran (Rhames) and a shopkeeper (Voight) join forces. Dozens of terrified women and children have fled into nearby swamps. Somehow they must be led to safety.

Hip-hop czar Master P cowrote, executive produced, and stars in I Got the Hook-Up, which is truly one of the more surreal urban comedies ever seen. P plays Black, a small-time hustler who scams a shipment of cell phones. With his partner Blue (A.J. Johnson) and semi-girlfriend Lorraine (Gretchen Palmer), Black snags a bit of cellular service from a large corporation and starts making a bundle from cell-phone sales. Unfortunately, the phones are a bit undependable, and a gangbanger accidentally broadcasts the location of a package of cash over the radio, setting off a treasure hunt. The gangbanger swears vengeance on Black and Blue, the cellular company starts investigating the surge in use, the FBI gets involved--everyone's on the hunt for our heroes. This plot description, however, is much more direct than the way it plays out. I Got the Hook-Up is a bizarre conglomeration of oddball characters and odd, off-the-cuff incidents, such as when a couple of cops get called in for a domestic dispute, only to discover one of the cop's wives, a dwarf, having an affair with a guy in a leather bat suit. Or there's the funeral of a gangster that turns into a brawl; the pleasure palace a TV repairman has in the back of his shop; an FBI interrogation in which the agents tear off Mission: Impossible-style rubber masks--the plot quickly gets lost in the madness. Which is not a bad thing, really. Tall, laconic P and short, excitable Johnson make an appealing Mutt and Jeff comic duo. Featuring cameos by Ice Cube, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and others. --Bret FetzerDescription
This outrageously out-of-control comedy adventure teams chart-busting hip hop sensation Master P with the hilarious A.J. Johnson (B.A.P.S., HOUSE PARTY). They're a pair of small-time hucksters who go mobile -- upwardly mobile -- when they turn a scammed truckload of cellular phones into more money and beautiful, sexy girls than they ever thought possible! But when this booming bootleg business gets its wires crossed, angry customers, mad-as-hell crooks, and the ever-so-clumsy FBI are all out to have these offbeat operators permanently disconnected! Also starring John Witherspoon (SPRUNG, RIDE, BOOMERANG) and Tommy "Tiny" Lister Jr. (FRIDAY) ... plus special appearances by Ice Cube and Snoop Doggy Dogg, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and more!Customer Reviews:

This is almost as bad as Manos: the Hands of Fate.......2003-12-16
The plot to "I Got the Hook Up" is actually quiet simple. Two hustlers who run a fencing operation go into the cell phreaking business, only to piss off all the wrong people in the process. Despite the simple premise however, the movie quickly turns into an incoherent series of scenes, which present a story only in theory. I actually wonder if the idea was to film a bunch of random scenes, glue them together, and hope for the best. This is supposed to be a comedy, but there are only a few scenes that are even remotely humerous. There isn't much unintentional humor either.
Whoever pronounced Ed Wood Jr. the worst director ever, has obviously never heard of Michael Martin. Seriously, I've seen Asian films without any dubbing, or subtitles that make more sense than this. Hell, even the Italians circa 1975, made horror movies that were more coherent than this pile of garbage. Do yourself a favor and find some nice paint to watch dry, and stay away from this one.
Watch Senseless, Don't Be a menace to..., Friday instead.......2003-11-02
This is nuthin like "Friday" or the next, "Dont be a menace to South Central", "High School" High or even "Trippin".
AJ Johnson is a really annoying guy, but he's simply a Chris Tucker,Chris Rock wannabe who's not funny at all.
And Master P has got to be the worst rapper to turn actor, yes people even Coolio has shown better acting skills.

Culled from the video archive of Germany's popular MusikLaden TV show, this compilation of live performances offers the proverbial something for everyone, from the blue-eyed soul of Hall & Oates to the three-chord thrash of the Ramones. It's an incongruous mix, united only by the chart-rising popularity of each selection, spanning the 1970s and presented, with mixed results, in remastered Dolby 5.1 sound. The hilarious low point is Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show's drunken, unruly romp through "The Cover of the Rolling Stone." And while you're trying to reconcile such ethereal hit-makers as Melanie and Bonnie Tyler with more seasoned performers like Van Morrison and Jethro Tull, you can be grateful that these vintage clips, several including extended jams, have been so faithfully preserved. By the time the Ramones fittingly close the disc with "Blitzkrieg Pop," you'll be having a very nice day, indeed. --Jeff ShannonDescription

Great music, "classic" performances!.......2001-12-27
The video and sound quality are very good (apart from a bit of over-psychedelic effects on Free's cut)--great when one considers that they are from the early 70's. And the performances are uniformly very-good-to-excellent. I can't believe anyone would find them "boring" because they aren't simply the familiar album versions. (Is it me or is something backwards here???) BTO doesn't have quite the full energy of their studio cuts, but Tull and the Ramones give nothing up . Dr. Hook's antics are hilarious (with an amazing feedback-assisted 'break' in their song) and even Hall and Oates are quite listenable. In my opinion, Alice Cooper *performing* live is better than any overproduced "music video".
Just about all of the 19 songs are as good as their album counterparts; several sound even better. Watching this eclectic assortment of classic rock artists playing live is simply a real treat for the eyes and ears.
