Description

JEAN-PIERRE MELVILLE'S MASTERPIECE ABOUT THE FRENCH RESISTANCE WENT UNRELEASED IN THE UNITED STATES FOR THIRTY-SEVEN YEARS, BEFORE ITS TRIUMPHANT THEATRICAL DEBUT IN 2006. ATMOSPHERIC AND GRIPPING, ARMY OF SHADOWS IS MELVILLE'S MOST PERSONAL FILM, FEATURING LINO VENTURA, PAUL MEURISSE, JEAN-PIERRE CASSEL, AND THE INCOMPARABLE SIMONE SIGNORET AS INTREPID UNDERGROUND FIGHTERS WHO MUST GRAPPLE WITH THEIR OWN BRAND OF HONOR IN THEIR FIGHT AGAINST EVIL.

5 out of 5 stars Cinematic ideal.......2007-06-16

Now why would you want to see L'ARMÉE DES OMBRES (or ARMY OF SHADOWS, or ARMY IN THE SHADOWS)?

Do you appreciate beautiful visuals? Jean-Pierre Melville possessed a truly cinematic eye. His characters are part of a setting but they don't get lost in it (unless he wants them lost, for effect). And here he worked with his cinematographer, Pierre Lhomme, to produce a blue-tinged world too exquisitely lit to be grim and ugly. This is a visual masterpiece of mood.

How about an honest story of the French Resistance? Not too romantic, nor too cynical? Melville was in the Resistance. So was the writer of the novel that this is based on. Here, Resistance fighters are presented as brave, and frightened. As self-sacrificing, yet pragmatic. As diverse, and single-minded. As successful, or frustrated. As doomed. As hopeful.

Do you like depth of character? This is not an action film. Very little violence is shown. This is a story of the lives between the violence where most of the time is spent. Where suspense dogs each Resistance member's footsteps. Where secrecy, even from family, is the way of life.

Do you like something thoughful? The effect of this film's quiet, deliberate pacing is intellectual - not just emotional. I didn't lose myself entirely in the fatalism of the Resistance fighters' circumstances. There was a sane, comforting person befriending me. And his name was Jean-Pierre Melville.

This was the first Melville film that I had seen. It was like the splash of cold water. Why had this filmmaker been overlooked? Here was a Frenchman who constantly wore a cowboy hat, Ray Ban sunglasses, drove an American convertible and soaked in American films - and he got nothing beyond art house exposure in return.

Here was a man who blended his beloved American influences with his own sensibilities, creating an extraordinary style all his own. Melville may be as close to my ideal cinematic auteur as I'll ever find. And, I only now discovered him.

5 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Film on the French Resistance in World War II.......2007-06-12

"Army of Shadows" is a powerful presentation of the heroism of some members of the French Resistance during World War II. Their heroism in the face of Nazi torture is extraordinary. I can do no better than to quote from Amy Taubin's essay in the book that comes with the Criterion DVD's (Taubin is a contributing editor for Film Comment and Sight and Sound and also writes frequently for Art Forum): "The hideous mess in Iraq, the sense that we are enmeshed in a situation in the Middle East where all options are bad, may partly account for the embrace in 2006 of Melville's depiction of the tragedy within even the supposedly 'good' war. In their pessimism about the inevitability of war and its cost in individual lives, Clint Eastwood's admirable and moving World War II films "Letters from Iwo Jima" and "Flags of Our Fathers," ... have something in common with "Army of Shadows." All three films show that in the worst of circumstances, human beings can act with courage and honor, but that there is a larger tragedy in the fact that war is a realm in which such heroism comes into being. Perhaps Roger Ebert's review best accounts for the contemporary power of this emissary from 1969:'Rarely has a film shown so truly that place in the heart where hope lies with fatalism.'

5 out of 5 stars A moving, tragic portrayal of the French Resistance........2007-06-03

With its release on DVD, Jean-Pierre Melville's "Army of Shadows" finally is available to the wide audience it always deserved. First released into a France under the sway of radical intellectuals, "Army of Shadows" was denounced as Gaullist propaganda and flopped at the box office. A U.S. release was never even considered until 2006, when a version restored under the direction of cinematographer Pierre Lhomme received a limited release here. Set between late October 1942 and late February 1943, "Army of Shadows" exists in a grim world of drab buildings, barren fields, and rain, all the better to depict the bleak prospects of the French Resistance in their fight against the Nazi invaders. Resistance fighters live in such danger that they dare not reveal their membership in that shadow army, even to close relatives; even the brothers Luc (Paul Meurisse) and Jean-Francois (Jean-Pierre Cassel) never learn of each other's courageous sacrifices for the cause of freedom. The life of the film's hero, Philippe Gerbier (Lino Ventura), demonstrates in microcosm the perils Resistance fighters face; in the space of four months, he escapes from two German prisons (including one escape, literally, from a firing squad); parachutes from a British airplane during aerial bombardment; and is forced to kill two traitors to the Resistance. The action of "Army of Shadows" is episodic, all the better to emphasize the uncertainty and constant terror under which all Resistance fighters lived. While not particularly gory, the film pulls no punches about the brutality of the Nazis. In two separate instances, Resistance fighters are brought to Gestapo headquarters and tied to chairs. One jump cut later, both fighters are slumped in those chairs, their faces beaten into hamburger, their sightless eyes bulging from their sockets. The unrelieved tragedy of "Army of Shadows" pays grim but just tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in the name of freedom, not least in the excellence of the performances. Watch out particularly for the great Simone Signoret as Mathilde, the most tragic of the Resistance fighters. Equal in courage, resourcefulness and daring to any of the other fighters, Mathilde nevertheless is unable to separate her life as a Resistance fighter from her life as a wife and mother, and therefore becomes an inevitable hostage to fate.

5 out of 5 stars A grim, austere masterpiece of the French resistance during World War II, by Jean-Pierre Melville.......2007-06-01

"...but I'm going to die and I'm not afraid. It's impossible not to be afraid of dying. But I'm too stubborn, too much of an animal to believe it. If I don't believe it to the very last moment, the last split second, I'll never die." This is Philippe Gerbier speaking. The time is between October, 1942 and February, 1943. He's the leader of a resistance cell in German-occupied France. He was an engineer. Now he is a hard man of skeptical intelligence. He kills a German guard with a knife to the throat so quickly and so unexpectedly it's nerve rattling. In Jean-Pierre Melville's austere, somber Army of Shadows, we follow what happens to Gerbier (Lino Ventura) and a handful of others, primarily Luc Jardie (Paul Meurisse), a weak-seeming intellectual who turns out to be the head of resistance in France; Jean François Jardie (Jean-Pierre Cassel), Luc Jardie's younger brother; and the remarkable Mathilde (Simone Signoret), resourceful with icy nerves, a woman, Gerbier tells us, who is "strong-willed, methodical and patient. She knows both how to command and how to carry out orders." For four months we watch them operating in a claustrophobic environment of matter-of-fact violence, the realities of betrayal, hiding and planning, a life without humor and only cautious trust, and above all else, the goal of killing Germans. That also means the need to kill informers, no matter how young or how respected. They will all probably die.

The movie is really a series of incidents that happen during these four months and how this group must respond: a prison camp and an escape, a shave from a barber who might be a Petainist, the killing of a young informer in an empty house when three of the resistance, including Gerbier, discover they cannot use a gun, there is no knife and finally they decide to use a towel to strangle the man. All the while, gagged and tied, the informer can hear them discuss the problem. This will be the first time any of the three have ever killed a man, and they do it. There's Mathilde's nerve in smuggling a radio through a German cordon, and her attempt to rescue a Resistance comrade from a prison where he has been tortured. There's the death of one of the four, carried out by three. Briefly, at the very end, we read of what happened to the members of this group...a cyanide pill, a beheading, tortured to death, survived. The ending is logical and incredibly sad.

One of the most effective aspects of this movie is how it concentrates on this small group of people. There are no explosions, gun fights, beatings and torture scenes, no gore, no bravado. In fact, there are comparatively few Germans. What there is is the unremitting pressure of discovery, of making a mistake, of tension, of never being able to relax. All the main characters were based on members of the French resistance. The actors are excellent. Lino Ventura dominates his scenes. Signoret is incredible.

This is tragedy, not melodrama, says Amy Taubin, author of an article which appears in the Criterion booklet. When that last note on the screen is finished, we feel exhausted. We have to remind ourselves that the right side won. Otherwise, I, at least, would feel not just respect for these men and women, but also deeply pessimistic. We've gotten to know them. Not to like them; they are too grim and dedicated for that, but to understand them to a degree. We know that if they had never existed there would have been others in their place. But I came to understand that I probably would never have had the fatalism, the nerves or the courage to undertake what they did.

Army of Shadows was shot in color, but the effect has been so deliberately muted that the movie looks as chilly and overcast as the time period. The Criterion edition has an excellent DVD transfer, a commentary by film historian Ginette Vincendeau, a booklet in the DVD case and a second disc filled with extras.

5 out of 5 stars The best movie you've never heard of........2007-05-31

A year ago, while the whole world saw such films as "Mission: Impossible III", "The Da Vinci Code", "Poseidon" among others, This movie "Army of Shadows" was finally released in the United States last year. I know this because then, I'd never heard of "Army of Shadows" until recently. I viewed this movie on DVD from the Criterion Collection last week and this was a great movie. I was shocked to learn that Jean-Pierre Cassel who was in the movie is Vincent Cassel's father. I didn't know that. Why was this movie remained unreleased for 37 years in the U.S. until last year I'll never know. My guess it was a political thing. This was a great film from France from 1969 which why this was the best movie you've never heard of.

Standing in the Shadows of Motown is a must-see film for any fan of the Supremes, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, or any other classic Motown stars. This swinging documentary celebrates the Funk Brothers--the team of studio musicians who powered dozens and dozens of hit Motown songs--by combining reminiscences, reenactments, and clips from a recent concert put on by the Funk Brothers, featuring singers like Chaka Khan, Ben Harper, and Joan Osborne on classic tunes like "What's Going On," "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," and "Heatwave." This crafty gang of elderly musicians will charm your pants off with a slew of entertaining anecdotes. Though it seems that there's a lot of dirt they're declining to dish, the movie deftly outlines the history of Motown, surely the most significant music label in American history--the label that turned segregated "race music" into chart-topping success. A soulful delight. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Detroit, Michigan, 1959. Berry Gordy gathers the best musicians from the city's thriving jazz and blues scene for his new record company: Motown. For the next 14 years these players are the heartbeat on "My Girl," "Baby Love," "Ooo Baby Baby," "Bernadette," "I Was Made To Love Her," "I Heard It Through The Grapevine," "Dancing In The Street," and every other hit from Motown's Detroit era. By the end of their phenomenal run, the unheralded group of musicians plays on more Number One hits than the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, and The Beatles combined, making them the greatest hit machine in the history of popular music. They call themselves the Funk Brothers. But no one knows their names...this is their story.

This might be the best 10 bucks you'll ever spend if you like Motown or heck if you like music. It leaves you wanting to know more and many of us who grew up with this music should know more. While some of their stories are heartbreaking it was a pleasure to see Pistol Allen smiling behind the drums even though he was so sick he would die shortly after the completion of the film. It was a sad moment too when two of the surviving brothers describe their last encounter with James Jamerson who would die the day after their visit. But there is fun too, fun for the Funk Brothers and fun for us as we are honored to hear these guys play and play they still can. The band is still very tight and very good. The vocalist do an admirable job of interpreting the hits. It would have been nice to have been graced with Marvin Gaye's and David Ruffin's presence but this is about the Funk Brothers and I for one am damn glad I got to see it.
Thanks to Dr. Lick's for putting this together.

2 out of 5 stars Motown disappointment.......2007-06-27

I was looking forward to seeing the actual footage of the singers. I do appreciate the story of the fellows behind the artists but still, I think the video would have been more enjoyable had they included the actual singers.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!.......2007-06-18

I rented this from Blockbuster, and immediately bought it. It's sooooo good and informative, I can't describe it. I loaned it to someone who stayed up until 2:00 a.m. to see the whole thing. There are absolutely great live performances from: the late Gerald Levert, (His "Shotgun" is outstanding) Me'shell Indegeocello (sp.)(who sexes up "You Really Got A Hold On Me"), Bootsy Collins, ("Cool Jerk"). Joan Osborne does a great ("What Becomes of the Broken Hearted") and Ben Harper all sing 2 songs. (The only performance I HATED was Ben Harper's "Heard it through the Grapevine"). Chaka Khan, Montell Jordan & Tom Scott also appear. The remaining "Funk Brothers" musicians who played behind the Motown groups, tell funny stories about each other, how they met, Berry Gordy and the label's performers. They even go to "Hitsville" where it all started. There are reinactments, and old photos. It's so good I've seen it at least six times. You will almost cry at the finale when they introduce everyone, even the musicians that have passed away. Their photos are on stage with the remaining members. There is a second disc of extras that I have yet to finish, but the movie itself is wonderful. I've watched it with Black and White people, young and old, and everyone loves it. Go get it. Now.

5 out of 5 stars I never really liked Motown..........2007-05-25

...and the Motown sound. I saw it as a saccharine, watered-down parody of Soul for mass consumption.

This DVD changed all that for me.

The story of the Funk Brothers and their different personalities --personal and musical-- was fascinating and a revelation. The music is top-notch and the modern vocalists they got for this film and for the excellent soundtrack --buy it, even if you think you don't like the Motown sound-- bring out the magic of those famous tunes I dismissed at an earlier age.

Maybe the current crop of singers have more soul or more influences to draw on than the originals artists, or maybe the engineers/producers sucked some of the guts out of the original tracks... I don't know, but these songs sound great!

What is more or less the same is the line-up of the Funk Brothers, finally getting a very small measure of the recognition they deserve.

The filmmakers and the the artists featured in this film turned me from detractor to a fan of the Motown sound. I can't give a better review than that.

If you like music documentaries and you haven't seen this one, you're missing one of the best!

3 out of 5 stars Why Barnabas was badly needed........2007-06-21

The early story lines were just okay. The introduction of Barnabas Collins transformed the show into the cult classic that it is today. The price for these early storylines is way overpriced by MPI. In fairness to the true Dark Shadows fans, I think MPI owed us something better than the high price for 6 dvds. I truly felt cheated in Vol. 26 for 19 esp. Nothing against MPI, but you can`t be serious about the pricing structure of your product. In most of the dvd`d there was some type of distortion and video malfuction. I do understand it was from the master tapes. Again, the price of the dvd`s was to high compared to the quality we were given. I`ve been wanting to get that off my chest for years. I wish anyone well who chooses to buy the pre-Barnabas years. I`m not going to be one of them.

5 out of 5 stars dark shadows the beginning.......2007-05-25

In reference to the above review MPI could charge 100.00 for the series in each set and I would still buy it, it is simply an all time classic show and I remember running home from school, (screaming even at the top of my lungs) in to the living room, turning down the lights and throwing a blanket over my head when the show came on at 3 p.m. in Dallas. I have all 26 volumes and am buying what MPI is sending thru the mail on the pre Barnabas episoes. Before I become a ghost myself I am going up to Rhode Island and take a tour of Collinwood to see it for my self. Barnabas, the evil witch Angelique who almost destroyed the entire Collins family in the year 1795, Elizabeth, Ben Stokes, the Evil "Rev" Trask who definatly deserved what he got in punishment and by the it way was so richly deserved, (It was not pretty in case you are wondering) Maggie Evans, David, Willie, Doctor Julia Hoffman, Roger, Carolyn, the ghosts of Sarah Collins and Joset Dupre who threw her self off of Widows Hill, the Dream Curse and the secret room at Eagle Hill Cementary, the celler room in the Old house on the "great estate of Collinwood" where so much tradegy and grief took place ( I for one was glad to see Abigal Collins come to an "untimley" end there after what she put poor Victoria Winters thru, the Blue Whale in the town of Collinsport and of course Quentin and Victoria Winters, how can I ever forget them..........

5 out of 5 stars Here's the basic dvd info, short and sweet........2007-05-19

Unlike other reviewers who feel the need to impress you with their DS knowledge....here's the basics about these dvds:

After OVERCHARGING for these sets (Dark Shadows-The Beginning)on their website, MPI will begin releasing the first year of the series 66-67, the Pre-Barnabas Collins stories, on dvd. Who thought these would be direct sales ONLY from their website?

These episodes are in fair condition. The dvd menus are horrible and cheap. Alexandra Moltke's (Victoria Winters) intros & interviews are nice, since the first season does focus on Victoria's arrival at Collinwood and Moltke has been out of the convention circuit for sometime.

Unlike the VHS release of the very first episode, MPI in their "INFINITE WISDOM" has edited the original commercials out and placed them as extras on a the last disc. Being 41, I liked seeing these old commercials as part of the first episode presentation.

Fans will appreciate the more simple "soap" plots of season one as well as the subtle supernatural elements. Diana Millay appears as The Phoenix, a creature who is reborn to die in fire, taking victims with her on each return. This plot line is truly under appreciated.

Dark Shadows-Beginning/Episodes 1-35

Old and new fans of the beloved Dark Shadows will finally be able to watch how it all began as MPI Home Video rolls out the first DVD Boxed Set of six of the series' very first episodes. This first DVD boxed set includes the first 35 episodes of the series.

Special features include the original commericals from the first episode, and an interview with Alexandra Moltke Isles, who played Victoria Winters, and an original Dark Shadows promo.

Creator, the late Dan Curtis, literally dreamed the series. He dreamed about a young governess riding on a train en route to a dark, strange and brooding estate. Talking over his dream with his wife and family, Curtis decided to turn it into an incredible soap opera, and the rest is history.

Dark Shadows ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971 and enjoined an iconic fan following similar to Star Trek and Batman, which also both premeired in 1966. Dark Shadows fans continue to hold annual conventions, and many of the actors have formed real and enduring friendships with the fans they've seen each year.

On this DVD boxed set, the Collins Family of Collinsport, Maine, are introduced: Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (portrayed by the legendary screen actress Joan Bennett), who hasn't left her family's great estate, Collinwood, in 18 years because of an enormoust secret; her brother, Roger Collins (played by the fantastic Louis Edmonds), who is vain, a snob and, like his sister, hiding a huge secret; Elizabeth's daughter, Carolyn Stoddard (played wonderfully by Nancy Barrett), who is full of 1960s teen angst; Governess Victoria Winters (played by the aforementioned Alexandra Moltke Isles), a young woman who grew up in a New York foundly home and was unexpectedly and mysteriously offered her post as governess; and Roger's son David Collins (played by David Henesey), who is BEYOND troubled.

Those who live in Collinsport are also introduced in this boxed set: Collinsport Inn Waitress Maggie Evans (played by Kathryn Leigh Scott), who is Vicki's best friend; her artist father and troubled alcoholic, Sam Evans, (played by Mark Allen for seven episodes then the rest of the series by David Ford); successful businessman and Collins Family nemesis Burke Devlin (played to the hilt by Mitch Ryan), who was wrongly convicted to manslaughter and blames Roger Collins; and Collins Plant Manager Bill Malloy (played by Frank Schofield).

The series began as a gothic romance, which this first boxed set portends. But, ratings were poor and the series faced cancellation after only about six months. Dan Curtis has said that he was forced to do something drastic to try and save the show, and drastic he did: he made the series revolve around the supernatural, so he introduced a ghost.

Mr. Curtis said that every time he introduced another supernatural element he was surprized to find that ratings increased markedly, so he decided that he had nothing to lose, since the series was still facing cancellation, and went all the way --- throwing a vampire into the mix in 1967!

The vampire, Barnabas Collins, was played to perfection by classically trained actor Jonathan Frid. The vampire was only to have been a temporary character that would be killed off following a reign of utter terror, but Frid's compelling characterization of a "sensative" and remorseful Barnabas was a revelation. Ratings soared, the series was saved, and Frid became an international superstar virtually overnight.

While casual viewers are very familiar with Barnabas, many are unaware that there were wonderful episodes that preceded him. It is truly incredible to be able to watch the progression of the series in these early episodes.

The gothic elements depicted in the episodes in this boxed set remain very entertaining, long before the supernatural plots began.

The core brilliance of what has made this daytime series endure for more than 40 years (and be the only daytime drama to be released on VHS and DVD) is the real emotions and life themes it dealt with: Love, death, fear, longing, revenge, obsession, lies, secrets, loyalty and betrayal.

What made it unique among all daytime dramas is that those themes were played out against a compelling backdrop of Gothic sensibilities that eventually included the 175-year-old guilt-ridden and love-lorn vampire, seances, time travel, ghosts, mystery, murder, intrigue and a constant dose of the unexpected.

This "soap opera" managed to transcend its genre by bringing a taste of Gothic horror and science-fiction fantasy to the hum-drum world of the afternoon drama.

But, it was the stellar repertoire cast that made it all work, because they played it straight, and gave some of the most incredible performances ever captured in daytime, and did so under the pressure of the series being virtually produced live!

The series has too many memorable moments to mention. For me, I still remember the beginning voiceover by Alexandra Moltke Isles of the very first episode, released on this set for the first time on DVD:

"My name is Victoria Winters. My journey is just beginning. A journey that I hope will open the doors of life to me, and link my past with my future ... A journey that will bring me to a strange and dark place, to the edge of the sea, high atop Widow's Hill to a place called Collinwood ... A world I've never known, with people I've never met. People who are still only shadows in my mind, but who will soon fill the days and nights of my tomorrows."

5 out of 5 stars First installment of a unique soap opera.......2007-03-27

I didn't even see Dark Shadows on TV until it began running as reruns back in 1976. Even though these episodes were ten years old at the time, I was instantly hooked. I had never seen anything like it - a gothic soap opera with a vampire as both heartthrob and sympathetic villain. The 1976 reruns did the same thing this first DVD collection did. It ignored the fact that the first 210 episodes ever existed and started with the appearance of Barnabus Collins in Collinsport, Maine, and the simultaneous disappearance of Willie Loomis, the Collins' handyman. I've never seen the first 210 episodes, but I've read their descriptions. Apparently they revolved around a series of love triangles and mysteries that just weren't that interesting to viewers, and so the storyline was radically changed and TV history was made as a result.

Jonathan Frid was really born to play the part of Barnabus. He is not a good looking guy in the classical sense, but he's got style, dignity, and class and was extremely magnetic in the role. Barnabus is a vampire in the mold of Lugosi's Dracula. However, rather than looking to expand an ever-growing harem as Dracula did, Barnabus is a romantic intent on reclaiming only one lost love. That is the emphasis of these 40 episodes. Even with the magnetic Barnabus, you'll notice these first 40 episodes move at a snail's pace compared to later episodes. However, what you are seeing is pretty much the way most soap operas progressed up through the early 1970's. The formula for most soap operas in those days was that there was one dynastic and wealthy family, and lots of middle class families with ordinary problems. Problems generally had to do with affairs of the heart with the occasional crime mystery thrown in, and resolution was very slow. Not until 1975 or so did you see everyone in town being CEO of their own company with fashion models as the cast. So have patience with the 40 episodes in collection one, because the pace definitely picks up in the second collection.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars maximum?? Should be 10 stars ... and more!!!.......2007-07-03

Having never seen Dark Shadows in the 1960's (don't think it's ever been shown in the UK at all) - this was my first introduction to the world of the Collins family, and the master of malevolence - Barnabas Collins (Ben Cross). Cross' Barnabas is ultra cool, sexy (of course), malevolent, threatening, violent, and caring - uh? caring? yeah, that's right - a vampire with a conscience. This 'revival' is for me, the best of the three attempts (apologies to any DS Original fans, this is not intended to insult your show, I've never seen it but have seen this and boy does it rock) only 12 episodes long, it does exactly what it says on the tin, it does not let up for a second. Suffice it to say that I hate Angelique for what she did to Barnabas (even though he led her on a bit, he didn't deserve her eternal punishment). Wish the powers that be had made a couple more episodes to finish it off properly but they didn't and that's a shame. Cross's Barnabas is one of the most amazing characterisations I've ever seen and because of this extraordinary portrayal of every conceivable emotion, brilliantly crafted, I have experienced every feeling that the character did and there's not many actors who have that power to play with the audience's emotions in the skillful manner that Mr Cross did with Barnabas, and in so doing has made the character immortal (forgive the pun) in the psyche of everyone who sees this masterpiece. After watching Dark Shadows the Revival, I cannot in all honesty say that I could watch another vampire series or movie without comparing it to Cross' Barnabas - The best vampire creation in all movie history.

Dark Shadows The Revival is the best series I've seen for a long time, I can't get enough of it, thanks SO much to all concerned with it, you did great.

5 out of 5 stars Dark Shadows: The Revival.......2007-05-19

I remember watching this on tv when it first aired..Wow! Although most people have fond memories of the original, the revival series had much higher production values, and moved along at a much faster pace..Seemed like it also eliminated some of the more unimportant sub-plots.. I already watched all three discs, and ready to watch again! Such a shame that it was cancelled so soon..If you are thinking of purchasing, don't delay! Well worth the price..

3 out of 5 stars Good show but not a very good release.......2007-04-27

While I'm glad that they finally put this out on DVD, it appears that the powers that be barely cared when putting together this release. There are absolutely no extras, commentary, subtitles, anything. (Well, there is the trailer on Disc 3 for a mini-series that has nothing to do with Dark Shadows.) Even more baffling is that apparently some genius decided to convert the picture to letterbox, possibly thinking this would look better on modern HDTVs. However, the show was not originally shot in this format, so what we get (on either an HDTV or an older standard size screen) is the top and bottom parts of the picture cut off, and some of the shots suffer as a result. What looks like poor framing or direction wasn't that way when it aired originally (or when it was released on VHS).

4 out of 5 stars flawed but worth it.......2007-03-21

well, I did read about the day 4 night scenes and u do notice the blue sky ,and sunlight, ...kinda sucks .... checked it against my vhs copy of the premier episode and they obviously forgot 2 dim the lights, as it were, when they made the dvd...still though it's either this or nothin,,,
also, it should be noted that this series is 4 the most part really well done ,acting [not every 1], but the strong ones r great, direction , writing,,,,
all in all, flawed presentation but worth it 4 the show...if u hate parting with your money, don't buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Dark Shadows -- The Revival.......2007-03-15

I, too, like many others commenting on "Dark Shadows -- The Revival" have found being able to watch this series again such a treat! I was a huge fan when it was on in 1991 and watched each and every episode breathlessly! Then, my co-workers and I would chit-chat at work the next day about what had happened on last nite's episode. I feel like every other true fan that it was not given a long enough run to develop a following, and with the success of other vampire movies and series recently, it should be given a chance again on TV! This is a definite much watch short-lived series, but don't let that scare you off. There is enough twists and turns to keep you wanting more. It is well worth the money and perfect for the vampire fan!

Bionicle 3: Web of Shadows is the most visually and narratively pleasing feature yet in the Bionicle series. With a story that is a little less self-referential than the previous movies, and set against some truly spectacular, computer-generated backdrops, Web of Shadows concerns the return of the heroic Toa to Metru Nui. There, they find an old enemy has overtaken the great city with the help of Visorak--robotic spiders that can quickly encase anything or anybody in near-indestructible webs. The Toa undergo a bizarre metamorphosis while sealed within strange cocoons, and emerge as clunky-looking machines made up of mismatched parts. Though horrified, they find that they also possess some new powers, which prove essential for their subsequent journey (itself full of twists and turns) to restore Metru Nui--and themselves. This delightful Bionicle installment is probably easily accessible for any viewer unfamiliar with the series to date. --Tom Keogh

The order came sooner than stated & arrived in excellent codition. This was a first attempt at on line ordering & it was very easy for me to follow.

I purchased this DVD for my 11 year old son. He loves Bionicles and he loves the DVD. I would recommend it for any Bionicle-loving child.

3 out of 5 stars Its better...........2006-01-01

Don't get me wrong, I think Bionicle is Ok. I'm not as huge a fan as my brother, but living with him, I've had to get to know a thing or two about this series.
Web of Shadows was not terrible, it was certainly better than the first and maybe moreso than the second, but it is soooo obvious that these are just one BIG commercial.
Overall, the plot line is a bit stale and hard to get caught up into. There are several sequences, such as "Keetongu" (or however it is spelled) or the transformation of the toa that will have anyone that is not a die hard fan rolling their eyes. Roodaka, the queen, was a refreshing new twist on the scenario and gave us something interesting, however, the relationships of the toa still seemed rather forced, which is somewhat surprising at this point.
Fans of the "bionicle" series will rejoice at yet another installment of their favorite series, but there isn't much here for anyone else. If you don't know much about the plot, watch this with someone who knows all the names, locations, and references made, because you won't understand a word of this story otherwise.

5 out of 5 stars The Bionicle Trilogy Is Complete!.......2005-10-07

The Bionicle movies just keep getting better with every release!
Web of Shadows features the best CGI thus far in the series along with the greatest action sequences to date. The voice acting is again top level and the storyline logicaly fits between "Mask" and "Ledgends". This is a must buy for any fans or owners of the first two DVDs.

Knebworth, Hertfordshire, June 30, 1990. 120,000 fans gathered for an historic concert event to aid the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Centre and the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology. This incredible benefit concert was an instant success due to the high-energy, awe-inspiring performances of such rock 'n' roll legends as Paul McCartney, Phil Collins, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Mark Knopfler, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Status Quo, Tears For Fears and Cliff Richard & The Shadows. The 2002 DVD edition features a new 5.1 Dolby Surround and DTS sound mix.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable-Fantastic.......2007-06-18

I bought this for the fact that Mark Knopfler was in it. I was blown away at the performances. Pink Floyd did "Shine on you crazy diamond" and "Run like hell". It was wonderful as always. Paul McCartney whom I'm not a fan of, changed my mind. "Hey Jude" was almost inspirational. The band, Status Quo, sang "In the army now". I really liked that one. The biggest surprise for me was Genesis, Phil Collins sang the song "Mama" like I've never seen and heard someone sing before. The band was unbelievable in this song too. I Actually got goose bumps. Play it loud! I haven't really listened to Phil Collins since they went their different ways. Eric Clapton, Elton John, Robert Plant (with Jimmy Page), Mark Knopfler, Dire Straits, Cliff Richards & The Shadows, Tears for Fears, Phil Collins and the Serious Band were all great too. I couldn't find one bad or even mediocre performance. It was wonderful to see some of these "supergroups" perform together. The sound is very good for a live concert. The DVD's are capable of Dolby Digital, Dts, and 5.1 Surround sound. 125,000 people were there for the benefit of the mentally handicapped kids. These people sang and rocked their hearts out. I am very critical of live music, not this one. You will NOT be disappointed .

5 out of 5 stars Live at Knebworth: Parts 1, 2 & 3.......2007-06-08

This Concert is really superb. With many rock music stars on one place, "Live at Knebworth" is amazing experience.

4 out of 5 stars Great Show.......2007-03-27

I bought this DVD because, I wanted to see some of these bands when I was a teenager but never got the chance. I think that Pink Floyd should have gotten more air time. Genesis was good, Robert Plant and Jimmy page was very good. Paul McCartney was not bad. Cliff Richard (Who was He??). Everyone else in the show was alright. But, All in All the entire show was great. Nice to see how these artist preformed on their own TURF.

5 out of 5 stars A must.......2006-06-03

I have seen other reviews and although most people recomend this item, some have concerns and issues with editing. I respect the opinions of everyone but offer this view: listening to "I think I love you too much" performed by Knoppfler and Clapton, guitar mounsters, is worth the entire box; believe me, it is outstanding and something very unlikely to see again. If you know who these people are, you will not be dissapointed. Guranteed.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-03-15

Yes, I am disappointed. The sound is terrible. Crowd sound levels are out of proportion to the music performed. We have come to expect a much better editing job. Of particular note, is that the sound track is out of sync with the video performances - especially on the Status Quo numbers.

It is nowhere near as complete as it could have been. So many good performances were omitted.

I give it 3 stars simply because it was such a moving concert. And it is better to have this record of it than to have none at all. Maybe someday this event will get the first class treatment it deserves.

Improvised by the cast, shot in black and white, John Cassavetes's first independent feature, Shadows, looked like no other film of its time. Cassavetes, seeking to both deal with social issues and create a new kind of cinema, told a story about a family of black siblings in Manhattan trying to make ends meet. Though it meanders at times, it features the kind of spontaneous emotion Cassavetes most wanted to elicit in his films.

A sensation in 1968, Faces earned Oscar nominations for actors Seymour Cassel and Lynn Carlin. Improvised and shot in an edgy, hand-held fashion, the film examines the disintegration of the marriage of a couple in mid-life doldrums. Each seeks solace elsewhere: husband John Marley with prostitute Gena Rowlands, wife Carlin with a free spirit played by Cassel. But neither finds anything approaching the fulfillment they feel is missing from the marriage. Indeed, in Cassavetes's probe of raw emotions, these people discover that, just maybe, the problem lies not with their spouse but with themselves.

The long, free-form drama A Woman Under the Influence is best appreciated as a good showcase for Rowlands, playing a woman whose sanity literally appears to be shattering as different aspects of her personality eclipse others at various times. Peter Falk plays her struggling, blue-collar husband, trying to understand the phenomenon and sometimes losing his patience. As with most of Cassavetes's works as a director, one can't help but find one's attention drifting in and out, but Rowland's performance is a key reason the film has been declared a "national treasure" by the Library of Congress.

The title of The Killing of a Chinese Bookie is the only commercial element in this fascinating character study by writer-director Cassavetes, who once again finds his cinematic soulmate in actor Ben Gazzara. The film uses verité technique to tell the story of Cosmo Vitelli (Gazzara), a Hollywood strip-club owner whose growing debt to a local gangster can only be erased if he agrees to kill a rival Chinese gangster. As usual, Cassavetes employs his favorite actors (including Seymour Cassel and the fearsome Timothy Carey) and vivid improvisation to give Chinese Bookie a tense atmosphere of emotional urgency.

Gena Rowlands stars in Opening Night, Cassavetes's drama of an aging, alcoholic stage actress in the days leading up to her latest Broadway opening. Like all of her collaborations with her writer-director husband, Rowlands is a woman on the verge of collapse, this time a lonely alcoholic whose very life is a performance. Overlong at 144 minutes, the film's long, loose scenes build through uncomfortable small talk and slow, tentative confrontations. Some of the scenes are edgy and thrilling, though many find this facet of Cassavetes pretentious and self-indulgent. Ultimately it's a matter of taste: if you like his style, you'll love this discomforting drama.

The eight-disc Criterion Collection set is filled out with the 2000 documentary A Constant Forge: The Life and Art of John Cassavetes, plus numerous interviews, a second version of The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, a commentary track for A Woman Under the Influence, a 68-page book, and various other features.

Description

This boxed set includes the following titles: • Shadows (1959) 81 min. B&W. 1.33:1 aspect ratio • Faces (1968) 130 min. B&W. 1.66:1 aspect ratio • A Woman Under the Influence (1974) 147 min. Color. 1.85:1 aspect ratio • The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976) 135 min. Color. 1.85:1 aspect ratio • Opening Night (1977) 144 min. Color. 1.66:1 aspect ratio • A Constant Forge (2000) 200 min. Color. 1.33:1 aspect ratio John Cassavetes has been called a genius, a visionary, and the father of independent film. But all this rhetoric threatens to obscure the humanism and generosity of his art. The five films included here represent his self-financed works made outside the studio system of Hollywood, on which he was afforded complete control. While about beatniks, hippies, businessmen, actors, housewives, strippers, club owners, gangsters, and children, all of them are beautiful, emotional testaments to compassion. Cassavetes has often been called an actor's director, but this body of work—astoundingly, even greater than the sum of its extraordinarily significant parts—reveals him to be an audience's director. The Criterion Collection is proud to present Shadows, Faces, A Woman Under the Influence, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, and Opening Night in stunning new transfers. Includes Charles Kiselyak's A Constant Forge, a candid biographical documentary on the life and work of Cassavetes .

5 out of 5 stars Criterion's most amazing collection to date.......2006-06-04

John Cassavetes - Five Films is, perhaps, Criterion's most ambitious project to date. The box set is absolutely amazing. Other reviews have done a good job of explaining the extras, so I won't repeat that information. The topic of Ray Carney has been the focus of much anger and frustration amongst Cassavetes fans and deserves some explanation. It is my understanding that Carney, the foremost Cassavetes scholar and author of "Cassavetes on Cassavetes", was almost solely responsible for the creation of this collection. He had a hand in everything and the set is the result of much hard work. His name was left off of the set at the last minute because of a dispute with Cassavetes' wife, Gena Rowlands. Ray Carney felt, as any scholar should, that the truth was important and did not make any attempt to hide any of the negative aspects of Cassavetes's life. This was completely unacceptable to Rowlands who threatened to kill the project unless Carney's name was removed completely. This also included the omission of several audio commentaries provided by Carney. What a shame! Contrary to the highly specious "documentary", A Constant Forge, Cassavetes was no saint. Who cares? Well, Gena Rowlands does.

Everything about this set is quite impressive. The book contains many thoughtful essays and insights into these complex and sometimes difficult films. The only weakness is the worthless "documentary". Don't be fooled - Charles Kiselyak is no Cassavetes scholar. Supposedly, he had never even heard of Cassavetes before he began filming. Again, Ray Carney provided all the factual information, which Kiselyak decided to discard in favor of crafting an "inspirational" narrative. A Constant Forge frequently feels more like a bizarre attempted beatification than an objective study of a real person. For those wishing to be disabused, check out Carney's excellent book, "Cassavetes on Cassavetes". Cassavetes never really sat down and wrote a lot about his life or work, but Carney spent years compiling every scrap of information available, forming a chronological narrative. He alternates Cassavetes's passages with what actually happened. Cassavetes was prone to exaggeration to the extreme. A lot of what he says is an outright fabrication, but that shouldn't diminish the importance of his films.

All this controversy really misses the point. These are amazing films that continue to influence filmmakers all over the world. Criterion did an excellent job and their handling of the Carney/Rowlands issue shouldn't hinder your enjoyment of this set in the slightest. It is a wonderful introduction to one of the most important American directors and belongs on every film connoisseur's shelf. Buy without hesitation.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS!.......2005-12-01

Please do not support this release of Cassavetes' films by Criterion Collection. Purchasing this DVD set constitutes a denigration of real criticism and suppresses the appreciation and comprehension of true art. The troubling circumstances leading up to the release of this edition (in which world-renowned Cassavetes critic Ray Carney was snubbed and fired after his work was completed) are absolutely pathetic and embarrassing for both Criterion and Miss Rowlands.

Shadows in the Sun is a feel-good movie that tells the story of two men who're struggling to overcome their fears of not being good enough. When Jeremy Taylor (a charming Joshua Jackson of Dawson's Creek) is assigned the unenviable task of tracking down and signing up reclusive author Weldon Parish (Harvey Keitel), he has his work cut out for him. The American expatriate hasn't written a book in 20 years, has no interest in dealing with junior editors such as Taylor, and sees no reason why he should change his idyllic lifestyle in Italy to worry about meeting hurried deadlines and publisher's editorial changes. In reality, Parish--who stopped writing when his wife died--is scared he won't be able to live up to his reputation as a relevant literary icon. After a few fistfights and the reclaiming of a stolen cow, the two begin to bond. A little. As Parish tells Taylor, "I dislike you less today than yesterday." Not as subtle as Diane Lane's Under the Tuscan Sun, Shadows in the Sun highlights the beauty of rural Italy--and of Claire Forlani, who plays Parish's daughter Isabella. The warm acting and lush scenery transcend the film's slow-moving pace and the predictable ending, which, in movies like this, can be nothing other than happy. --Jae-Ha Kim

5 out of 5 stars A very CHARMING movie!.......2007-04-15

If you liked "Under The Tuscan Sun", you will enjoy this movie too. It is a romantic comedy filmed in the beautiful Italian town of Tuscany. This movie shows wonderful scenery of the countryside. It really makes me want to visit Italy one day. This movie is about an ambitious agent Jeremy Taylor (Joshua Jackson) who is sent by his London publishing company to convince a reclusive, retired author Weldon Parish (Harvey Keitel) to write again. After Jeremy spends time in Tuscany he finds himself very much in love for Weldon's daughter (Claire Forlani) and also he becomes friends with Weldon. This movie has a little bit of everything...romance, comedy, and wonderful scenes of Italy. However I would consider this a girl's movie...or better yet.."chick flick". It is a good movie for a girl's night together with a bottle of wine. Or a good entertainment on a rainy day. If you are interested in Italy or Italian movies then this is the movie for you. I also am a fan of movies filmed in Italy. I imagine it to be the most beautiful place on earth.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful in so many ways.......2007-04-13

Excellent film, my son is a writer, getting his MFA (Masters of Fine Arts) in creative writing/English, to be a professor at a University, he enjoyed it as well.

5 out of 5 stars One of the 10 Best Films I have ever seen!.......2007-04-05

We loved everything about this film. The acting was some of the best. And how can you go wrong with a backdrop like Tuscany to film in! We loved the tender story of two artists who brought out the best and the worst in each other. Amazing! We would like to see more films like this one. We also enjoyed the extra features on the DVD that explained more fully about the making of the film. Let's see more of this caliber of filmmaking!

Dean and Lori Mickelson

5 out of 5 stars A must see!.......2007-02-23

Stunning Tuscan scenery, well filmed and a superb storyline. There is no bad actor nor any bad role in this entire movie! I've never known much about Harvey Keitel before this film. I've seen him but the characters he played never matched his ability. But, this film is, by far, THE BEST role I've ever seen Mr. Keitel play! The depth of this movie will amaze you and long after the movie had ended, good vibes and happy thoughts will linger in your mind! This is a must see movie, definitely an addition to my personal collection and is a "feel good movie" that I will watch again and again! Enjoy!

Val Lewton's name is synonymous with the subtlest, most mysterious brand of horror filmmaking in Hollywood's golden age, and the nine horror classics he produced at RKO between 1942 and 1946 constitute the most remarkable cycle of creativity in B-movie history. (For the record, the Lewton/RKO legacy also includes two non-horror entries, Youth Runs Wild and Mademoiselle Fifi.)

Before becoming a film producer, the Russian-born Lewton was a prolific writer of pulp fiction, nonfiction, and a couple of pornographic novels. He also worked for years as assistant to David O. Selznick, a legendary producer with a distinctive personal signature--and a flair for grandiosity Lewton himself never emulated. It's ever so revealing that, on Selznick's Gone With the Wind, it was Lewton who came up with the idea for the famous rising shot of the Atlanta railyard filled with Southern wounded, with the Confederate flag streaming above--only he idly proposed it as a joke, never imagining that anyone would actually film such a spectacularly ambitious scene.

In 1942 Lewton left Selznick to undertake a series of horror films for RKO Radio Pictures. The studio would give him a budget around $200,000 per picture and a title RKO deemed to be grabby; Lewton would have a free hand as long as he stayed on budget, used the title, and gave the studio a salable movie of second-feature length (around 70 minutes). Over time, Lewton would increasingly have trouble with studio supervisors, but RKO was the right place for him. Although low in the pecking order among Hollywood majors, the studio made up for its lack of MGM-style glamour and Warner Bros. grit-and-gusto by working in a finely filigreed, almost miniaturist style. The art department under Van Nest Polglase and Albert S. D'Agostino was capable of exquisite artisanry, and in Nicholas Musuraca, a master of low-key cinematography and supple camerawork, Lewton found an invaluable collaborator in creating moody shadow-worlds where what you couldn't see was more disquieting than what you could.

He was also fortunate in having Jacques Tourneur to direct his first three efforts (they had teamed years earlier on the Bastille-storming sequence for Selznick's A Tale of Two Cities). They scored first time out of the gate with both a popular hit and a masterpiece: Cat People (1942). The story involves a pretty young Serbian woman in Manhattan (Simone Simon) convinced that her ancestors had practiced animal worship during the Middle Ages--and that she herself might shape-change into a lithe, ravening panther if her passions were aroused. The film is uncannily successful in keeping the viewer guessing whether this is a phobia borne of morbid obsession and sexual repression, or a genuine, horrific possibility. There are two sequences of matchless artistry and almost unbearable suspense--a lonely, echoing walk through pools of lamplight alongside Central Park, and a late-night swim in a deserted indoor pool--that build to throat-grabbing climaxes and remain milestones in the history of screen horror.

Many critics feel that the second Lewton-Tourneur endeavor, I Walked With a Zombie (1943), is both men's finest work. The title is so lurid that the heroine-narrator (Frances Dee) must shrug it off with her very first words, yet the movie is an amazingly delicate and poetic piece of spellbinding--nothing less than a reworking of Jane Eyre on a voodoo island in the Caribbean. Other horror aficionados prefer the more mainline ferocity of The Leopard Man (1943), an adaptation of a Cornell Woolrich story about a serial killer strewing corpses along the U.S.-Mexican border. Although on one level this is the Lewton film that veers closest to conventional mystery-suspense, there's no end of unsettling ambiguity (another black panther on the loose!) and hints of occultism and religious mania.

RKO promoted Tourneur to A-movies after this; Lewton would never again have so masterly a directorial partner. Yet in a weird sense (which is only appropriate), this underscores how much Lewton--with his wealth of arcane historical lore and storytelling archetypes, his quiet, patient attention to detail, and his taste for oblique narrative--was the essential auteur of all his films. Promoting first Mark Robson and then Robert Wise from the editing table, Lewton went on to make the deeply mysterious The Seventh Victim (1943) and The Ghost Ship (1943), two films in which such grotesque elements as Satan worship and murderous psychopathology are folded away inside eerily drifty, almost becalmed sleepwalks into eternal night. The Seventh Victim--a movie populated with more walking dead than Lewton's out-and-out zombie picture--is one of the cinema's supreme meditations on the ways lives brush against one another in the spaces of a great, impersonal city. And The Ghost Ship (th
