Wildly romantic, daringly exciting, Michael Mann's film of James Fenimore Cooper's novel created a new babe magnet out of Daniel Day-Lewis, he of the heaving pecs and flowing mane. As Hawkeye, he plays an American settler raised by the Mohicans who is forced to serve as a guide for British adventurism in upstate New York. But the British have been outflanked by the French (and their Indian allies); then British honor is betrayed when a band of renegades assaults them during their retreat. Mann captures the viciousness of this era's hand-to-hand combat in startling battle scenes. But he also invests the film with heartfelt romance, as the feelings swell between Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe. The ending is a stunner, a long, nearly wordless sequence of battle and loss. Strong performances all around, particularly by Russell Means as Chingachgook and Wes Studi as the evil Magua. --Marshall Fine

SO WHAT IF IT DOES NOT TRACK THE BOOK EXACTLY? MOVIES SELDOM DO. THEY CAN'T. 90 MIN. IS NOT ENOUGH TIME. WOULD YOU WANT TO SIT THROUGH AN EXHAUSTIVE EXPOSITION OF EVERY DETAIL? ALSO I WORKED WITH THE MAN WHO WAS TATTOO CONSULTANT FOR THE MOVIE. MUCH INSIGHT FROM HIM...

I love the original movie. It is one of my most feel good movies of all time. I was really disappointed with the way they edited this dvd. The vocal part that is missing was a huge hole in what was a wonderful movie. Why do they have to mess things up that have a good thing going for them.

After reading the book,it became my favorite. So I was disappointed that the movie did not follow the book very much.About half the book was missing from the movie and the relationship between Hawkeye and Cora is all Hollywood. In the book,Cora and Uncas die.Not Alice,Uncas, and Heyward. And I was so heartbroken by the portrayal of Heyward as a cold, heartless military man who meets his demise at the stake. That is not how he was in the book at all!I do give the movie makers credit, however for the stellar score and realistic storytelling. It was not a bad movie,it was just disappointing if you're expecting the same story as the book.

Not to be confused with the 1992 Michael Mann feature of the same name, nor with any of the many other adaptations on screens big and small, this version of The Last of the Mohicans, produced by the BBC and originally aired in the U.S. on Masterpiece Theater in the early 1970s, is widely considered the most faithful to James Fenimore Cooper's novel. That's a mixed blessing, to say the least. On the one hand, this Mohicans, with eight episodes (offered here on two discs) totaling some six hours, is undeniably thorough. Cooper's tale, taking place in 1757 and set in upstate New York during Britain's so-called French and Indian War, concerns the heroic adventures of Natty Bumppo, called Hawkeye (portrayed by Kenneth Ives), and his Indian companions Chingachgook (John Abineri) and Uncas (Richard Warwick), Chingachgook's son and the true last of the Mohican tribe. While the French and their Indian allies battle the British for control of Canada and northeastern America, Hawkeye and friends are preoccupied with Cora and Alice Munro (Patricia Maynard and Joanna David), the daughters of a Scottish colonel who commands Ft. William Henry and the prey of the evil Magua (Philip Madoc), a Huron who seeks Cora as his squaw and revenge against her father for past wrongs. The girls' quest to reach their father makes Homer's Odyssey look like a three-hour tour; there are constant captures and rescues, heroic and dastardly deeds by the bucketful, and a good deal of detail about a conflict that set both Euro against Euro and Indian against Indian. What's more, Cooper's sympathy toward the Native Americans, who even then could see that their way of life was being obliterated by the palefaces and their smooth-tongued treacheries, comes through loud and clear.

The downside, however, is also considerable. The production values are laughable by today's standards: while some outdoor footage was shot on 16mm film in the Scottish highlands, all interior and some exterior scenes were shot on soundstages, and on video, and the contrast is jarring. The pacing is slower than a two-legged wolf, and other than the climactic showdown between the Huron and Delaware warriors, the several battle sequences are less than riveting. Director David Maloney relies on scenes that play more like a staged drama than a movie, featuring static two-shots in which characters exchange expository dialogue at great length. And speaking of dialogue, in addition to the fact that listening to Indians with British accents takes some getting used to, Madoc's tendency to spit out every line as if he were delivering a pugnacious proclamation is wearisome, and it won't take viewers long to tire of stilted lines like "What has brought the white chief to the camp of the people of the turtle?", to quote just one. Yet surprisingly, The Last of the Mohicans somehow manages to transcend these flaws; in the end, those with a little patience are likely to find it very entertaining. --Sam Graham

Description

The definitive adaptation of the James Fenimore Cooper novel, this eight-part BBC production stars John Abineri, in an Emmy-nominated performance as the Mohican Indian Chingachgook, and Kenneth Ives as the intrepid frontier scout Hawkeye. In 1757, during the French and Indian War, half-sisters Cora and Alice Munro set out to join their father, the British Commander of Fort William Henry. After they are betrayed by the villainous Huron Magua, the sisters are rescued by Hawkeye, whose efforts to lead them to safety are aided by Chingachgook and his son Uncas.

4 out of 5 stars BBC's Mohicans.......2007-05-13

Brilliant - I've been waiting for this version of Last of the Mohicans to appear for ages, ever since 1971 in fact. It's just as good as I remember from the TV transmission, the most faithful to the book ever made, much better than the Daniel Day Lewis film which took such liberties in taking storyline from earlier big screen efforts.

5 out of 5 stars Early Masterpiece Theatre drama.......2007-05-07

This was one of the first Masterpiece Theatre productions. I have always wanted a copy since seeing it on tv in the 1960s. I have had to wait all these years for it to be released. The version is faithful to the Cooper book. It is not a slickly made movie as you would see today. ( Keep in mind when it was made.) The Indians are white men dressed up as Indians. Despite the fake scenery and a few acting shortcomings, I enjoyed this miniseries as much today, as I did back when it was a new production.

5 out of 5 stars Last of the Mohicans-Masterpiece Theatre.......2007-05-07

in my opinion this is the best version of LOTM

5 out of 5 stars The masterful 5.75-hour BBC mini-series seen on 1970s Masterpiece Theatre.......2007-04-23

In James Fenimore Cooper's 140,000-word novel first published in 1826, half-sisters Cora and Alice are escorted through trackless wilderness forests teeming with hostile Indians to reach their father at British Fort William-Henry, under siege and threat of frontal attack by the French and their Huron Indian partisans. The time is 1757, the place upper New York State's lake country. Background events are historically accurate, the British armies fighting French army incursions from Canada, each side with Indian partisans. LOTM is one of five novels comprising Cooper's so-called Leatherstocking Tales, centering on Natty Bumppo (aka Hawkeye, Deerslayer, Pathfinder). Attempts to film this novel's riveting combination of American history, life-and-death drama, and action-adventure date back eighty-some years to silent films.

This BBC production never loses sight of, or respect for, Cooper's source material and characterizations. Perhaps twenty key events are dramatized in proper sequence. Search-party and life-inside-Fort-Edwards scenes are also added for background. Acting is uniformly superb; characterizations are as Cooper intended; and Dudley Simpson's haunting, understated flute and drum score, composed for this mini-series, seems ever more poignant as the drama progresses.

Exclusions are Hawkeye's Huron-camp bear sequence, many philosophical discourses (Cooper never allowing such opportunities to pass unused), most of Hawkeye's and Chingachgook's pursuit strategizing, and lots of linkage between events (making scene and time transitions abrupt). As Cooper based his backdrops on actual New York state locales, filming in England required cinematography simplifications while still preserving reasonable facsimiles of these backdrops. One can't find fault with these limited budget short-cuts: No effort to bring this novel to film, before or since, remotely approaches this production's accuracy, substance, emotional impact, and sheer entertainment.

It speaks volumes about the US media and their viewing culture that one must look to the British for a decent depiction of this classic and quintessential AMERICAN novel, the other four novels of this series having never been touched in any meaningful way. Where is Francis Ford Coppola when you need him?

Mann's 1992 film is quite good, but only when divorced from Cooper's work: It is not the story Cooper wrote, as anyone reading the novel or seeing this BBC production will discover. Mann's film-time constraints require butchering the novel's structure. Mann also adversely distorts Cooper's characterizations: Colonel Munro and Major Heyward (who survive in the novel) become abrasive and non-sympathetic; Uncas and Alice become pale shadows whose ultimate fate is of little concern. Cooper's Hawkeye is a SCOUT in British employ (NOT a settler or militia member), living the Indian way and eschewing white settlers' encroachments by later fleeing to the Kansas prairies. Cooper's Hawkeye was made prisoner only by hostile tribes, NEVER by the British! Mann's Hawkeye/Cora love interest is preposterously incompatible with the entire Leatherstocking saga! Cora's fate in the novel becomes Alice's instead, Cora surviving. The psalm-singer David has vanished. The screenplay for the 1936 film is listed as a principal credit. M*A*S*H is allowed to influence Hawkeye's name. Need more be said?

DVD picture-sound quality for this 5.75-hour 1971 BBC TV mini-series is fine. There are eight six-chapter 40-plus-minute episodes on two one-sided DVDs, the keep-case having an inner leaf. There is no Masterpiece Theatre commentary or any extras. Library of America offers (obtainable via Amazon.com and well worth the very reasonable price) a beautifully hardbound, ultra-compact two-volume set containing all five novels, highly recommended for serious libraries and readers seeking substantive entertainment.

2 out of 5 stars Not Terrible-But Not Good.......2007-04-12

My father had viewed this years ago and remembered it being excellent. We just got it and it is not. The sets are horrible. It must have been filmed with a budget of about $1,000 or less! The camera quality is horrible and the actors are pretty bad except for Hawkeye, Cora and Alice. The Indians are terrible. Uncas is a little nerd with an English aristocratic accent and Magua is pretty dumb too. All in all it is pretty bad. The Massacre at Fort William Henry consists of about 5 women! Would not recomend, unless you want to laugh at something very dumb.

4 out of 5 stars I will find you.......2006-03-24

It is 1557 a confusing time with the French verses the English and the various Indian tribes taking sides. There are innocent settlers just looking to be free caught up in the conflict.

A small contingent of British are escorting two daughters Cora Munro (Madeleine Stowe) and Alice (Jodhi May) of a British colonel to a near by fort. They are betrayed and three trappers come to the rescue thus setting the story of the "last of the Mohicans" begins.

I do not want to go into details as it will undermine the surprises. Let's just say you will not be disappointed.

This story is based on the 1936 screen play and embellished to a full movie. The scenery is breath taking. One item you can spot right off is that the people in buck skins blend into the back ground; however the British, French and colonel's daughters conspicuously stand out.

Many of the scenes are also surrealistic and have an ethereal feel. This combined with such songs as "I will find you" in the back ground lure you into a timeless feeing. Even at the end of the story you are waiting for more.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
As with most films today there are many versions. And different media. Be sure to find the one that suits you best. Be aware of director's cuts as "cuts" is a key word. If you can not find a domestic version do not settle for less; you may want to invest in a region free player or convert the media using software readily found on the internet.

3 out of 5 stars Great date movie but an extremely disappointing Director's Expanded Edition DVD.......2006-03-24

I consider Michael Mann's 1992 version of "The Last of the Mohicans" to be a great movie, and one of the best date movies of all time. You think I am kidding? Find a better combination of action and romance that this film. Nathaniel (Daniel Day-Lewis) runs through the forest with an intensity that is frightening and when he finally gets tired of just looking at Miss Cora Munro (Madeleine Stowe), he does not need words, just the sound of a fiddle being filled in by a string section. That is why I can also say try to find a movie with better music for both the action and the romance (I figured out how to play the main theme on a cheap mini-organ). But I will not belabor the point because I have to think I am preaching to the choir when it comes to speaking of the quality of this film (Just avoid the book, because I could not get halfway through Cooper's novel).

But this Special Edition DVD is a disgrace and the fact that here we are more than a half a decade latter since this DVD came out and we still do not have something worthy of this film. This DVD loses one star right off the bat because here is what it describes as being "BONUS FEATURES": widescreen format, scene selection, and subtitles. Excuse me for living, but I would consider those standard. I have a DVD of "Zulu" that has all of those things (albeit only four chapters) and still has biographies to read. The standard for special editions has been set by James Cameron, first with "The Abyss" (on Laser Disc originally) and then on "T2." Just look at what ever DVD you think gives you everything you want and more about a favorite movie and compare it to this barren effort.

This DVD loses a second star because what has been added to the film as part of the "Director's Expanded Edition" actually takes away from the film. To tell you the truth, I did not think that was possible. But the scenes that are added to the film do not add anything significant. They come across as padding rather than adding depth, so just make them deleted scenes. But even worse, there are a couple of well remembered scenes for which the music and editing have been changed to the point that the scenes are just not the same. Even my kids picked up on this (we still have the laser disc). There are few films I have enjoyed more than "Last of the Mohicans," but it is currently the most disappointing DVD in my collection because I know what it should be.

The one strength of this disc is that the screen ratio is back to the original, which is NOT TRUE about the Laser Disc or the Widescreen Video Tape. For proof look at just one scene, the one where the British leave the fort and get attacked on both sides by the Magua's warriors. When I saw the film in the theater it was this scene that made me immediately think: "They HAVE to do this widescreen. Anything else destroys the film." I remember that Cora and her sister rode their horse over to a tree on the right, got off, and hid behind it. On the VHS and the Laser Disc I could not see that. I thought I was crazy and had imagined that part of the action, but when the movie aired on TV the scan and pan caught the scene. So the good news is that on this DVD you can see everything.

If you loved this movie, by all means, rent the DVD and check it out. But be prepared to be disappointed. I watched the movie again and there are still scenes I love, but then one of those "expanded" moments comes along and it makes me want to cry. I have been waiting this entire century for them to go back and juice up this DVD as Cameron finally did with "Titanic." I want a DVD edition worthy of this film and my patience will run out by the end of this decade.

This impressive silent adaptation of the James Fenimore Cooper tale captures the essence of his work by keeping the film's storyline close to the written work. Set during the French and Indian Wars, our adventure centers on two sisters trying to find their lost father, a British officer, while trying to avoid the French and their allies, the Huron. Helping our heroines are Chingachgook and his son Uncas, the last of the Mohican tribe, and their friend and ally, the frontiersman known as Hawkeye.

Based on the classic writings of James Fenimore Cooper, this exciting frontier adventure series vividly captured the daring exploits of Hawkeye, "first of the long rifles," and his faithful blood brother Chingachgook, last of the Mohicans. Set in New York's Hudson Valley of the 1750s, the series was filmed almost entirely in Canada from 1957 to 1958 utilizing authentic outdoor settings and carefully observed period detail. Athletic and handsome John Hart, famous for playing the title role in Jack Armstrong, The All-American Boy (1947) and numerous action adventure movies, is a natural as Nat 'Hawkeye' Cutler. Lon Chaney, Jr. plays the Chingachgook role with relish, years after he had gained fame for his starring role in Of Mice And Men and the classic Universal movie The Wolfman.Episode 1 - The Search: Hawkeye and Chingachgook rescue an elderly woman from the clutches of two Indians. She enlists their help in finding her son who was abducted 18 years ago by the same tribe.Episode 2 - The Delaware Hoax: The Delaware, an Indian tribe with ties to Chingachgook, are framed by white men for murder and robberies they did not commit. Hawkeye sets out to clear the tribe's name.Episode 3 - False Witness: Army payroll messengers are found murdered, victims of a band of renegade highwaymen. Hawkeye and Chingachgook go undercover, managing the local trading post, to find the culprits.Episode 4 - Hawkeye's Homecoming: Hawkeye learns that his brother Tommy has become a red coat soldier. When Tommy is killed by a corrupt Indian companion, Hawkeye seeks justice.
