At first glance, René Clair might seem an odd match for Agatha Christie's mystery thriller Ten Little Indians, but his buoyant touch is exactly what is missing from so many overly solemn remakes. Ten strangers gather for a mysterious gathering on a secluded island. It turns out to be a farewell party, for they all have been sentenced to die for crimes in their past by a self-appointed judge, jury, and executioner who may be one of them. One by one, the guests are systematically dispatched in the manner described in the lyrics of the children's rhyme "Ten Little Indians," while the survivors nervously eye one another, splintering into tenuous alliances until the next murder throws suspicion on someone new. The terrific cast of character actors has a ball with Dudley Nichols's witty script. The flamboyant sparring of Barry Fitzgerald (whose paternal Irish lilt takes a sinister dimension) and Walter Huston is almost upstaged by Roland Young's deadpan drollery. Romantic leads Louis Hayward and June Duprez come off as arch and stiff in august company that includes a sinisterly detached Judith Anderson, a dotty and distracted C. Aubrey Smith, and a hilariously flippant Mischa Auer. The story has been remade numerous times under the title of Christie's novel, Ten Little Indians, but never as well. Clair's effervescent, lively little gem is a fatal drawing-room comedy with a body count and a surreal mood of doom. --Sean Axmaker

And Then There Were None.......2007-06-21
French director Rene Clair populates this quaint but ingenious whodunit with a wonderful assortment of old-world characters, including Judge Quinncannon (Barry Fitzgerald), Doctor Armstrong (Walter Huston), and General Sir John Mandrake (C. Aubrey Smith). You'll feel as uneasy watching this as the guests themselves, and equally baffled as to the whos and whys of it all. Great vintage fun.
Pleasing Diversion.......2007-06-12
While not quite up to the quality of the novel upon which it is based, this little film starring Barry Fitzgerald is entertaining nonetheless. Because of the problem of bringing such a novel to the screen, the production team found it necessary to change certain of the elements of the novel. It is up to the viewer to determine if they did so effectively or not in each case.
mystery murder.......2007-06-03
nice movie good actors (judite anderson whaiting for rebecca)
but the dvd copie is not very good
Horrible adaptation.......2007-06-01
My family and I waited eagerly for our DVD to arrive. We immediately loaded the DVD and began to watch, anticipating a movie at least almost as exciting as the book. Instead of 96 minutes of suspense we were bogged down with what seemed to be hours upon hours of uninspiring drivel. This is one of the worst movies I have seen in a long time. The acting was horrible! I know some home movies that are more suspenseful. Overall we see character after character die while we the viewer could care less. One can only wonder, what would this movie have been in the hands of Hitchcock. Unless you have money to burn don't waste your money (even a dollar or two on this horrible adaptation of a wonderful book. Play a board game with the kids and fight, it will be immensely more enjoyable.
Good movie. But they should have kept a little closer with the book........2007-04-18
I had to read this book in high school. I never was able to read it then though so I bought it years later. The book is really good. And so is the movie. My only complaint about the movie is that they didn't stay very close to the book with it. The ending in this movie is completely different than the ending in the book. Some of the characters names aren't even the same and neither are their "crimes". Personally, while this is a good movie and I do enjoy watching it, I like the book better. The movie has a happy ending to it where the book has a more tragic one.
I would definitely recommend that anyone who hasn't read the book should. Anyone who is thinking about buying this movie, if you haven't already seen it and you haven't already read the book, buy the book instead. Read it first. Then come back later and buy the movie.

Most Dangerous Game: The sole survivor of a yachting accident Robert Rainsford swims to a mysterious island to save himself. There he finds his way to the mansion of Russian Count Zoroff. He is made welcome and introduced to two other shipwreck survivors brother and sister Eve and Martin Towbridge. The Count is a big game hunter and the three guests soon find that he has grown bored with hunting animals and is after a new prey...man. AND THEN THERE WERE NONE: This Agatha Christie masterpiece is a must see for all mystery fans. The scene of the crime is a wonderfully foreboding deserted island. The stage is a large creepy mansion.

Oh come ON, my man GODFREY!!!.......2007-06-13
Mike is correct in his rating of this DVD, as well as the Marengo product in general. For a mostly Public Domain DVD company, it doesn't get much better than Marengo Films.
Oh, come ON, Mike !.......2007-03-22
I'm not reviewing the product - thus the solitary star - but rather commenting on the fact that Mike Smith's review, see below, felt a little contrived somehow - and sure enough, click the link to his other "reviews" and they are ALL glowing reports of Marengo's product ! Stuffing the ballot a little, eh Mike ? Oh, why not, and good luck to you and whatever interest you have in Marengo.
MARENGO SHINES ON TWO GORGEOUS TRANSFERS.......2007-02-26
If you have been looking for quality transfers of these two titles, here they are. MARENGO'S work on THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME is every bit as good as the CRITERION version and, in my opinion, better in one respect. The Marengo transfer is printed a shade lighter which results in sharper details in the outdoor night scenes which comprise the vast majority of this wonderfully exciting classic. And the clear and booming audio track will blow you away as well.
For AND THEN THERE WERE NONE, MARENGO does a freeze frame on each of the main titles with a seamless bleed over from one to the other. This completely clears up the soft focus and distortion caused by the jumpiness of the main titles in the IMAGE version. And the rest of the transfer is sharp with a clean and clear soundtrack.
Kudos to MARENGO for a job well done.
Finally, a decent transfer of these films..........2006-11-23
Both of these films have been in the "public domain" for a while, and really lousy video & DVD transfers have inundated the shelves, cheap quickies with poor picture & scratchy sound. Both films are classics, and deserve a treatment as good as this (if not better). I enjoy "And Then There Were None" maybe a little more. The very stylish director, Rene Clair, assembled a cast of reliable "supporting" players, including Barry Fitzgerald, Walter Huston, Judith Anderson, Roland Young, etc., and they are in confident command of the wonderful Agatha Christie material. "The Most Dangerous Game" is also terrific; at only an hour long, it is suspenseful and the entire cast is marvelous (Joel McCrea, Fay Wray, Leslie Banks, Robert Anderson). You could do a lot worse than to purchase this fine duo by Marengo Films.

Description
This is it! Agatha Christie's famous mystery, "Ten Little Indians," deftly brought to the screen by legendary French director Rene Clair in this restored original screen masterwork. Ten strangers are invited as weekend guests to a mansion on a remote island. When the host doesn't show up, the guests start dying, one by one, in uniquely macabre Agatha Christie-style. A brilliant cast lead by Academy Award-winning actors Barry Fitzgerald and Walter Huston.

Poor sound and picture quality.......2005-10-14
I purchased this DVD for the movie "And Then There Were None." I loved the Agatha Christie novel and wanted to see the movie. However, the sound is so difficult to understand even at high volume that I had to give up watching it. I understand and enjoy most old movies even with poor picture quality; this was the poorest one I've seen. On picture quality alone I wouldn't say this is a problematic DVD, but because it seems impossible to understand, I'd have to recommend skipping this one and finding one with restored sound. The movie itself however is probably much better than two stars; the two stars are for sound and picture quality only.
A very good collection on one DVD.......2004-11-11
This is a single sided DVD which contains three mystery/suspense thrillers. 1)'And Then There Were None'; Barry Fitzgerald, Walter Huston, Louis Hayward; 97 minutes, B&W: Based on the Agatha Christie classic, a mysterious host invites ten guests to an old house by the sea. When the quests end up being killed off one by one, terror and suspicion run amuck. Who will be next, why are they being killed off, and who is the killer? 2)'Cry Panic'; John Forsythe, Earl Holliman, Anne Francis; 74 minutes, Color: Driving through a small town, a man accidentally hits a pedestrian and kills him. In trying to get assistance with the accident, the body disappears. No one in town, not even the sheriff, is willing to admit that anything happened. What secrets are they hiding and how far will they go to protect those secrets? 3)'The Bat'; Vincent Price, Agnes Moorehead; 79 minutes, B&W; In this old dark house mystery a killer has invaded the rented mansion of a mystery novelist and her guests. One by one, the guests are being killed off as the Bat flies. What is the motive of the Bat? Is there something hidden in the mansion? And, perhaps more sinister, who is the Bat? These are three very good suspense movies. 'And Then There Were None' is one of the best among mystery movies. The quality of the DVD is good. I have a 20" TV and they look as good if not better than VHS. Among the American Home Treasures triple feature DVDs, this is the best of what I have seen. The bonus material includes filmographies of the stars, biographies, and trivia. I have just given teasers based on the jacket descriptions. The premise of mystery movies is not to know what is going to happen so you can get caught up in the mystery.-Bob

Product Description
Australia released, PAL/Region 4 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada. Languages: English (Dolby Digital 2.0) Synopsis:
The third of many film and TV adaptations of the popular Agatha Christie novel And Then There Were None ("Ten Little Indians" is the title of the American edition, the hit play, and most of the movies), this 1965 version moves the action from a remote island to an isolated ski resort and otherwise rearranges the plot. The basic premise, however, remains the same. Ten strangers, eight of them guests and two of them servants, are lured to a dinner party and then trapped there to be killed one at a time by an unseen host who wishes to punish them for their disparate perceived crimes. The old nursery rhyme provides both the framing device, and, in the source material, the method of execution for each victim. In this version, however, the revised murder scenes include a hapless servant (Marianne Hoppe) falling to her death from a booby-trapped ski lift. Ten Little Indians features a varied cast that ranges from future Bond girls Shirley Eaton and Daliah Lavi to former teen idol Fabian and former Wyatt Earp TV star Hugh O'Brian. It also reunites My Fair Lady co-stars Stanley Holloway and Wilfrid Hyde-White. The film was the final directorial effort of George Pollock, who had previously helmed several adaptations of Christie's popular Miss Marple mysteries, starting with 1962's Murder She Said. Christopher Lee makes an uncredited appearance as the recorded voice of absentee host/villain Mr. Owen. Despite its mountain setting, the picture was filmed in Ireland.

Hugh Lombard, "Drop dead!".......2006-04-21
8 people are invited to a remote mountaintop chalet by their host U.N. Owen; two people are already there as the butler and cook. Once there they find that their mysterious host has accused each of murder and commences to dispatch the guests in the order of a song of Ten Little Indians. Finding that they are cut off from the outside world they must find Mr. Owen and neutralize him before they are all dispatched.
All the clues are present; can you detect whodunit and why?
Pretty well acted version of an Agatha Christie classic. Everyone remembers the standard movie version the was made "And Then There Were None" (1945) with Barry Fitzgerald. Several other attempts were made such as "And Then There Were None" (1974) with Elke Sommer and even one movie with the original book title "Ten Little Niggers" (1949) with John Bentley.
This version with Hugh O'Brian as Hugh Lombard even keeps much of the dialog and is with adding to you Agatha Christy collection. Many of the actors are popular and will be recognizable form similar plays. The Voice of 'Mr. Owen' is Christopher Lee. The only annoying part is the constant intrusion of sixties music by Malcolm Lockyer. The good part is that the most obnoxious actor gets bumped off first.
