During the mid-'30s, Mickey Mouse's fans ranged from the more than one million children who were members of the Mickey Mouse Club to Franklin Roosevelt, Mary Pickford, and the Nizam of Hyderabad; theater marquees announced "A Mickey Mouse Cartoon" with the feature titles. These wonderful shorts, many of which have never been released to the home market, remind viewers just how charming Mickey was before his popularity and role as a corporate symbol restricted his behavior. In these cartoons Mickey's personality was boyish, appealing, and slightly mischievous. The superb animation emphasizes that impish appeal. When Mickey dances with a deck of cards in "Thru the Mirror," he displays a stylish grace Fred Astaire might envy; in "Brave Little Tailor," his expressions and body language reveal his thoughts as he outwits Willie the Giant. It's virtually impossible to watch him without smiling. These shorts overflow with color and motion, and their lavish visuals pack an increased impact in an era of minimal television animation. Only Walt Disney would spend the money to animate a full deck of cards, a band flying through the air in a tornado, or a clutch of semitransparent ghosts, and only his animators could make those characters live on the screen. The prints have been lovingly restored without pumping up the color too much: the nuances of the delicate watercolor backgrounds still come through. Parents, Disney buffs, and animation fans will want this superb collection in their home libraries. Unrated: suitable for all ages. --Charles Solomon

By 1939, when the earliest films in this collection were made, Mickey Mouse was the most famous cartoon character in the world. The unsuccessful hunter in "The Pointer" (1939) and the irrepressible magician in "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" (1940) rank among his finest performances. In both films, he sparkles with vitality. But as Mickey grew more popular, more restrictions were placed on what he could do, and the character grew dull. Those restrictions become obvious when the viewer compares these films with the shorts on Walt Disney Treasures: Mickey Mouse in Living Color. In "Mickey's Birthday Party" (1942), he clowns and stumbles through a comic dance routine, but it feels like he's working for the laughs. In 1936, when a more impish Mickey danced with a deck of cards in "Thru the Mirror," the fun came from the stylish grace of his movements: That Mickey didn't need to mug for the camera. In the later films, Mickey serves as a genial straight man, with Pluto and other side characters supplying the comedy.
A new generation of animators faced the same problems and restrictions when they tried to revive the character in "Mickey's Christmas Carol" (1983) and "The Prince and the Pauper" (1990). The extras include some deleted animation from "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," and the five opening sequences from the "Mickey Mouse Club" (1955), the last time Walt Disney provided the character's voice. (Rated G, suitable for all ages: minor cartoon violence, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon
Description
The celebration of Mickey's color capers continues in this second volume of shorts -- from "Society Dog Show" in 1939 to his last short, "The Simple Things," in 1953 -- and feature film appearances, giving you a decidedly colorful history of the most famous mouse in the world. This outstanding review of Mickey's color career spotlights some very special features, including his groundbreaking performance in "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." You'll also get an inside look at Mickey's recent career through the eyes of his most recent animators, Mark Henn and Andreas Deja, and voice actors Wayne Allwine (Mickey) and Russi Taylor (Minnie). Featuring exclusive introductions by film historian Leonard Maltin, this is a timeless collection from generations past for generations to come.

Leonard Maltin apologies/intros are Absurd. Just the Cartoons, Please........2007-05-19
I was going to buy this collection, but after reading so many negative reviews about the unavoidable explanations included in the dvd's about how "offensive" these cartoons might be construed by sensitive types who don't understand the times that these films were made in, I am declining to make the purchase. It's a shame because I love Mickey and the Beanstalk, and many other Mickey shorts/films.
Until the company wises up and puts a warning label marked POSSIBLY OFFENSIVE MATERIAL on the case (for those pathetic folks who want to turn a blind eye to smoking, stereotypes, violence, and drinking in cartoons), instead of the constant warnings and introductions by Maltin, I refuse to tolerate this ridiculous nonsense. I want to watch these cartoons in their original form, without interruption or apologetic introduction. They did this with some of the other Disney treasures, as well. (And on some of the Looney Tunes box sets, with Whoopi Goldberg popping up to explain why you might find questionable content.) Good grief, that we've become such a society that we are tampering with works of art and cowtowing to PC whiners. These are cartoons from our history, and dvd is perfect for preserving them, warts and all. But Disney seems obsessed with pleasing people and keeping things safe and squeaky clean. No thanks.
Mickey's Coasting Period.......2005-12-21
The greatest always go through a "coasting period" where they stop trend-setting and start craftmaking. The innovative, industry leading Mickey of the 20s/30s gives way to "the icon"/"institution" Mickey of his later career.
Mickey's cartoons from 1940-and beyond show a superstar in his element doing what he does better than anyone: entertain and delight. He does so by himself, but mostly with the best animated supporting case ever made.
Enjoy this set that (like MM in B&W Vol Two) allows you to play all the cartoons back to back continuously.
"Mr. Mouse Takes a Trip", "The Pointer", "Mickey and the Seal", AND "The Little Whirlwind" show a veteran movie star making it look soooo easy.
A major YAWNER.......2005-12-19
I got this collection for my wife, who loved Disney cartoons as a girl. We watched the shorts together one evening, and I was looking forward to laughing.
I don't think either of us even cracked a smile. After most of them, we would look at each other with an expression that said, "What the hell was that all about?"
We're not humorless people. Honest. But these Mickey shorts just aren't . . . funny. There're more . . . charming, I guess, than funny. And they all end at the most inappropriate times, as if the animators just gave up. It's hard to imagine Walt Disney and his writers sitting around a table coming up with some of these "stories."
Any humor to be gleaned from these shorts have been eliminated by Leonard Maltin, who, at the beginning of most of them, says innane things like, "We all know that gunplay isn't funny . . ." or "We all know that drunkenness isn't funny . . ." So I made sure not to laugh when those moments arrived. Maltin also informs us that Americans were so base and unsophisticated in the 40s and 50s that they actually found humor in bogus foreign accents. But no longer! We're too enlightened for that now. I guess Maltin isn't familiar with Apu or Fat Tony from the Simpsons.
This set gets two stars because of "Mickey's Christmas Carol," which, in case you're sensitive of such things, contains a bogus Scottish accent, and because of some of the insightful bonus features. Besides that, this set is a real yawner.
terry jarvis reviews a walt disney treasure.......2005-12-17
the second volume of mickey in colour is brilliant and i have only watch one feture and that is the prince and the pauper im 17 but i remember watching this when i was about 5 and i loved it the vhs does the prince and the papuer no justice as on the dvd you see how good the animation is with breath taking animation for something made in 1986 this is pretty good animation
Great stuff. Too many inescapable apologies.......2005-11-26
I have most all the Disney Treasures DVDs. Watching these over and over, I get tired of the Leonard Maltin apologies for the content. First, the content doesn't offend me. I guess that must mean I need to know why it should. The Maltin intros tell me every single time I see each offending short. I hope those in charge will consider putting one disclaimer at the beginning of the entire set, which can be bypassed with the ff button in the future. I really get tired of seeing them over and over.
Beyond that, and that's no small thing, the content I bought the DVDs for is the best. Thank you, Disney for releasing them.

Any plans for a re-release???.......2007-06-24
To Leonard Maltin and those in charge:
Are there any plans on re-releasing any of the earlier wave of the treasury series w/out the limited edition packaging? I could care less about that stuff and just want the DVDs in a regular package. I think it would be fair to those of us who missed out earlier and good for disney business to re-release these in different packaging so everyone can get these for a reasonable price. Right now the only people making money off of these DVDs are the secondary sellers who are holding Mickey, Goofy, ect. for ransom at ridiculous prices for a couple discs. Let's get these cartoons into the hands of the public and fans where they belong.
You gotta love Mickey.......2007-05-06
Mickey is awesome! I do not think you can watch this without laughing at least once. Mickey is the greatest cartoon star ever!! I'm tring to get MM in B&W now, since I loved this so much.Walt Disney Treasures - Mickey Mouse in Black and White
oh, mickey, you're so fine.........2007-03-20
my son and i own both vol 1 and 2 (4 dvds in total), and i can see from other reviews there is no need to tell you about how many cartoons that is in total, i can keep dealing in realm of impressions and feelings about the feature.
mickey is nice, and funny. his relationship with other characters is funny and sometimes other characters are funnier than mickey. but mickey is just as relevant and fun and laughs to my son as mickey was to me 35 years ago. disney is great in that respect, never gets "old".
and that is why you should have it. cuz both your kids and you will enjoy it all the same.
Outstanding!.......2005-11-04
After years of rewinding and replaying my fuzzy VHS tapes of HERE'S MICKEY, MICKEY MOUSE GOLD, MINNIE MOUSE GOLD, LIFE WITH MICKEY, MICKEY'S CRAZY CAREERS among others, I finally possess the first half of the Mick's color cartoons on DVD. They play wonderful and bring back plenty of memories. Please pay particular interest to THE BAND CONCERT, MAGICIAN MICKEY, and CLOCK CLEANERS...gems.
MICKEY MOUSE ONLY STARRED IN 55 COLOURED CARTOONS.......2005-09-15
The Disney treasures collection is the best and cheapest way of getting the entire series to their golden age shorts.
I must warn you not to buy any of these mini DVDS if you are someone who would love the full collection being the mini DVDS are just repeats or shorts due on future Disney treasures.
As you know Black and white cartoons are only normally seen these days on a fan basis or history basis which is why the general audience since the 1960's have not seen many old and original Mickey mouse cartoons because the Studio wants the general audience to see coloured cartoons only these days, plus black and white do not suit the general audience anymore.
Mickey Mouse Was created in 1928 and was Walt Disney's very first cartoon as well as the first cartoon with sound in it, at first they just starred Mickey, Mini, Pete and others, but did not feature our familiar Disney characters till the early 1930's including Donald, Pluto and Goofy. 75 black and white cartoons were made from 1928-35, Mickey Mouse's cartoons turned fully into color in 1934/35 and still stared his new friends who were seen is his last few black and white cartoons including Donald, Pluto and Goofy. They were still all just Mickey Mouse cartoons but all of them except 3 starred at least one out of Donald, Pluto & Goofy. By 1936 14 colored cartoons had been made of Mickey Mouse and his friends. In 1937 In the late 1930's Walt Disney for the very first time created a cartoon classified as one of Mickey's friends(DONALD DUCK) Then in 1938 they started doing spin off classifications called DONALD AND GOOFY, then in 1940 they done PLUTO'S very first own short. In these cartoons not classified as Mickey Mouse, they did not star Mickey Mouse when all of Mickey's cartoons starred them which was because in the late 30's the audience was complaining about Mickey's mean character not going with his nice friendly personality which is why from 1937-53 Walt Disney realised he was limited on stories to suit Mickey's character and that he better make Mickey's popular friends turn into cartoon superstars who were bigger stars than Mickey physically all along as you are about to read as well as the fact that they starred in all of Mickey's own cartoons when did not star in there's who also had an enormous lot more cartoons made alone per character than Mickey did at all. Mickey was and still is today in the present just what made Disney start and become what it turned out to be and is used today as we speak like it always has been since the 1940's like an advertisement for WALT DISNEY, but Mickey is not a cartoon star like all think he is.
Only 14 colored cartoons classified as Mickey Mouse had been made upto 1936. They only made 28 new cartoons classified as Mickey Mouse from 1937-53 when his last original short was made, which makes 42 colored shorts in total which all starred atleast one of his friends out of Donald, Pluto and Goofy except for 3 of his own shorts out of all 42 that just Starred him and Minnie. Donald starred in 130 Shorts of his own from 1937-67, Goofy starred in 48 cartoons of his own from 1939-67, Pluto starred in 48 shorts of his own from 1940-51 which makes 226 colored shorts not classified as Mickey Mouse which he only appeared in ten of, other than that he appeared in 2 special Shorts and one WAR commercial which also starred his friends and makes 55 colored shorts in total starring Mickey Mouse. Meaning 39 out of Mickey's own 42 colored shorts star Donald, Pluto or Goofy which is why I would rather call these DVDS Mickey, Donald, Pluto, Goofy and Friends. Being Mickey is not the star. Then you see there is 226 cartoons of the stars seen in Mickey's cartoons which do not star Mickey meaning Mickey's cartoons were like an origin to the real stars who starred in 226 shorts of their own which did not star Mickey.
after the last short in 1967, they did not produce anything till 1981 because TV was taking over and the theatre customers was reducing in cartoons due To Hanna Barbera and lots of other TV cartoons that were making cartoons popular as TV Series, Studios like Disney and Warner were not willing to create TV Cartoons till the late 1980's early 90's when Animated TV as well as taken over Theatrical cartoons had become a massive popular thing to the whole world. In 1981 they Did a Special called Mickey's Christmas Carol which again starred all his friends plus friends of Donald's that were introduced in Donald cartoon shorts. Then next in 1987 a Goofy Special was made called Sport Goofy in Soccermania that did not star Mickey. Then in 1987 A TV Series of Donald's Uncle and Nephews was made. Chip-N-Dale who were introduced in Donald Cartoons had A TV Series done in 1988. Goofy had a TV Series of his own Done in 1992. Donald had a TV Series of his own done in 1996. a Few Specials of Mickey were made from 1990-97 but all stared his friends when his friend's specials and TV Series did not star him. The finally in 1998 they started a new TV Series called Mickey Mouse works which was show with scenes that made Mickey and all his friends the presenters of lots of brand new shorts which again in Mickey's cartoons they starred his friends when Donald, Pluto and Goofy's new shorts did not star Mickey. It is all because Mickey is not an easy character to write stories in cartoons up for with good humour and adventure, which is why he never starred in all his friends cartoons as well as when getting a show that did star him it featured all his friends being Mickey is nothing when it gets to screen entertainment other than a way of advertising Walt Disney productions and cartoons like a cartoon advertising Toys.
Mickey Mouse only starred in 55 colored shorts
Below is a complete list of all his appearances. it comes in 4 columns: first the episode number, then the date, then the official classification of the series it comes under, then the title.
