These four classic, 1938 black-and-white Nancy Drew hour-long films directed by William Clemens (not the 2007 movie starring Emma Roberts) feature Bonita Granville as Nancy Drew, John Litel as Carson Drew, and Frankie Thomas as Ted Nickerson. Based on the character from the book series first published in 1930, the headstrong teenager Nancy Drew has a knack for winding up right in the middle of a mystery, and neither her father nor friend Ted can talk Nancy into doing what they consider the sensible thing: letting the police handle the detective work. With a curious mix of early feminism and cultural chauvinism, a dichotomy representative of late-1930s society, Nancy investigates each mystery with fervor, usually dragging her friend Ted into the thick of the investigation and demonstrating a complete disregard for her personal safety or the safety of her friends and family in her determination to track down the perpetrator. Sharp-witted and quick to pick up on the smallest, seemingly insignificant details, Nancy often succeeds where the local Police Captain Tweedy (Frank Orth) fails. Nancy Drew, Detective presents the story of an elderly benefactress unscrupulously detained at a sanatorium, while Reporter and Trouble Shooter are murder mysteries, and Hidden Staircase deals with a combined murder and attempt to dupe two elderly women. While somewhat ponderously paced by modern standards, these original Nancy Drew adventures are quality suspense mysteries that deserve their classic designation. (Ages 10 and older) --Tami Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
These old movies are great!!!.......2007-07-04
These movies are funny and well written. My husband even enjoys watching them with me. Also recommend that Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series from the 1970s also available on DVD. Go Nancy, go!
Disappointed with quality.......2007-06-25
I was looking forward to owning these movies, having seen and enjoyed them on television over the years. When I got the dvd set, I found that there was no sound to go with the movies. Thinking that I had gotten a defective set, I exchanged them. It's the same problem with the new set, so I'm stuck with silent movies. My dvd player is of recent vintage and plays all forms of dvd's (even ones I've recorded). I hope your experience isn't the same as mine. :^(
Why that girl is such a card!.......2007-06-24
I was first introduced to Nancy Drew through the original books- I loved the books. Then I saw the show(s). I loved those very much. Finally I saw this movie on store shelf and had to have it. I loved it a lot because Bonita Granville played a very great Nancy.
FOR THOSE WHO LOVE OLD DETECTIVE MOVIES.......2007-06-16
I won't go into the plot outlines, as they have already been discussed in previous reviews. I am late again but will add, this is a great entry into the many famous detective series of the 30's. Bonita Granville who originated the role may appear a bit "perky" to some, but we must remember she was a typical all American teen who was not only very intelligent for her age but also had a knack for solving very clever clues to unravel a crime or mystery.
For Granville, this series liberated her typecasting as a "brat" that she was playing prior to the Drew movies. In real life, she was a very gracious lady who went on to produce the famed LASSIE TV series. Warner Brothers hoped the Drew franchise would continue after 4 movies (contained in this set), but Granville was growing up and ready to play roles more suited to her age.
Based on the beloved series of novels by Carolyn Keene (a pseudonym for many writers of the books), all the remakes of Nancy drew pale in comparison including the television series.
For those young girls who loved the books, and nostalgia buffs, will certainly find this an entertaining, if not a bit fluffy series. The 4 movies do manage to create suspense--making this one of the better entries in the genre.
Worthwhile, despite the sometimes imperfect transfers to DVD--and nicely priced.
Four-Film Classic Series.......2007-06-15
The Original Nancy Drew Mystery Collection presents the four movie Nancy Drew series released by Warner Brothers in 1938-9. Nancy Drew (played by Bonita Granville), an enthusiastic, insightful teen, delights in solving crimes. Her successful lawyer father, Carson Drew (played by John Litel) tries to restrain and protect her, to little avail. Nancy's best friend is compliant, inventive Ted Nickerson (played by Frankie Thomas), who takes frequent tumbles in Nancy's behalf. Each film is a separate story and lasts from 60 to 69 minutes. The principals are all excellent and are supported by fine character actors.
In Nancy Drew - Detective, wealthy alumna Mary Eldredge wants to leave $250,000 to Nancy's school but suddenly disappears. Nancy's doctor reports being kidnapped to treat an old woman in a secret place, to gain entry to which, one must use the password `Blue Bells'. An injured carrier pigeon shows up with a message containing the password. Nancy goes to work to find out what happened to the alumna and to get the money for the school. Nancy and Ted disguise themselves. The story is based on `Password to Larkspur Lane'.
In Nancy Drew - Reporter, Nancy, entered in a newspaper's reporting contest, visits a coroner's inquest and decides the likely defendant is innocent. The key to the case is finding the tin can the poison came in because the can preserves all fingerprints, including the real murderer's. Ted has to box, and a hotel sign provides fun.
In Nancy Drew - Trouble Shooter, a family friend at Sylvan Lake is accused of murder. When a dead man is found under a rare, tropical flower in a field, Nancy starts to snoop. She is not happy that her father enjoys the company of a woman neighbor. Nancy and Ted get to ride in a biplane.
In Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase, two elderly sisters intend to donate their property to a hospital once they own it in two weeks. By their father's will, at least one sister has to sleep in the large house each night in order to inherit. The problems are that people are trying to steal the proof the sisters met the terms of the will, that the sisters' chauffeur is found shot, and that small sounds and thefts are going on at night inside. Should the sisters flee their home? Nancy and Ted find a passageway in the basement that clarifies matters. The film is based on "The Hidden Staircase".
All four black & white films look good, although there are some brief segments of `Detective' that don't and at times `Reporter' looks viewed through a very thin waterfall. (The picture is still far ahead of Alpha Video's.)
There are no sex or language issues. There are no skin scenes, other than a boxing match in `Reporter' between Ted and an older, bad guy. Nancy and Ted are pals and don't even kiss. The chemistry is good.
The characters often say '23 80', which refers to the $23.80 fixed weekly payment to WPA workers; so if you bet '23 80', you are betting a lot.

You may be surprised to discover that the director of the Lethal Weapon movies and scary horror flick The Omen, Richard Donner, also produced and directed this classic children's adventure (which, by the way, was written by Donner's screen-wizard friend Steven Spielberg). Then again you may not. The Goonies, like Donner's other movies, is the same story of good versus evil. It has its share of bad guys (the Fratelli brothers and their villainous mother), reluctant-hero good guys (the Walsh bothers and their gang of friends), and lots of corny one-liners. Like in an old-fashioned Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew plot, the Goonies need to solve a problem: a corrupt corporate developer has bought out their neighborhood and plans to flatten all their homes. Luckily, the beloved gang stumbles on a treasure map. In the hopes of finding the treasure to buy back their houses, the Goonies embark on their quest through underground passages, aboard pirate ships, and behind waterfalls. This swashbuckling and rollicking ride was also a great breeding ground for a couple of child actors who went on to enjoy numerous successes in adulthood: Sean Astin (Rudy, Encino Man) and Martha Plimpton (Pecker, 200 Cigarettes). --Samantha Allen Storey
Description
Following a mysterious treasure map into a spectacular underground realm of twisting passages, outrageous booby-traps and a long-lost pirate ship full of golden dubloons, the kids race to stay one step ahead of a family of bumbling bad guys... and a mild-mannered monster with a face only a mother could love.

Why was there never a sequel?.......2007-07-03
This movie was little more than your typical 80's "Teen angst" movie, starring Sean Astin, Josh Brolin and (we hope) a sober and drug free Corey Feldman. A search for pirate treasure, a trio of bad guys who keep their deformed brother locked in a basement and an Indiana Jones-like trek through tunnels, caves and booby traps takes this from a campy 80's kid flick to an enjoyable Richard Donner film.
I just watched it again this past weekend with my 9 year old. He sat wide-eyed at the tense parts, laughed his toosh off at the funny parts and raised a freaked out brow at the first sighting of Sloth...
And when it was all over, he asked me a very simple question... "When's part two coming out?"
I didn't know what to tell him. After 20 years, if they haven't made one by now, they're not likely to make one. "Chunk" at 35 just wouldn't be as funny.
goonies.......2007-06-10
saw this movie .went it came out was in pressed than as iam now it a classic
Hey You Guys!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-01
I grew up with this movie. Its one of my all time favorites and it's a classic.
Its about a group of kids who find a treasure map and go looking for the treasure. Pretty simple but throw in the booby traps, 3 wanted killers, a deformed giant and you still arent even coming close to describing this hit.
All I can say is its a must have for any movie library. I bought a copy for my 5 year old son (warning there is a bit of cursing but hey, I grew up with it so can he) He loves it and watches it over and over again. Thankfully its one of those movies that I could never get sick of so I havent gone crazy from seeing it yet.
A Definite Must-Have DVD.......2007-05-26
I was 21 years old and in college when this movie came out and I liked it! At almost 43, I still love the movie and have it in my DVD collection. There are many good scenes in the movie, such as when Chunk is watching the car chase and smashes his drink against the window and says, "AW #$%&!" I also like the contraption that Data uses to get over to Mikey's house and goes thru the front screen door. The best part of the movie.. The end where they save their town from the developers! You will have to watch the movie to find out how the Goonies save their town. :)

Amazon.com essential video
Hong Kong wuxia films, or martial arts fantasies, traditionally squeeze poor acting, slapstick humor, and silly story lines between elaborate fight scenes in which characters can literally fly. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has no shortage of breathtaking battles, but it also has the dramatic soul of a Greek tragedy and the sweep of an epic romance. This is the work of director Ang Lee, who fell in love with movies while watching wuxia films as a youngster and made Crouching Tiger as a tribute to the form. To elevate the genre above its B-movie roots and broaden its appeal, Lee did two important things. First, he assembled an all-star lineup of talent, joining the famous Asian actors Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh with the striking, charismatic newcomer Zhang Ziyi. Behind the scenes, Lee called upon cinematographer Peter Pau (The Killer, The Bride with White Hair) and legendary fight choreographer Yuen Wo-ping, best known outside Asia for his work on The Matrix. Second, in adapting the story from a Chinese pulp-fiction novel written by Wang Du Lu, Lee focused not on the pursuit of a legendary sword known as "The Green Destiny," but instead on the struggles of his female leads against social obligation. In his hands, the requisite fight scenes become another means of expressing the individual spirits of his characters and their conflicts with society and each other.
The filming required an immense effort from all involved. Chow and Yeoh had to learn to speak Mandarin, which Lee insisted on using instead of Cantonese to achieve a more classic, lyrical feel. The astonishing battles between Jen (Zhang) and Yu Shu Lien (Yeoh) on the rooftops and Jen and Li Mu Bai (Chow) atop the branches of bamboo trees required weeks of excruciating wire and harness work (which in turn required meticulous "digital wire removal"). But the result is a seamless blend of action, romance, and social commentary in a populist film that, like its young star Zhang, soars with balletic grace and dignity. --Eugene Wei
Description
An epic set against the breathtaking landscapes of ancient China, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, combines the exhilarating martial arts choreography by Yuen Wo-Pind (The Matrix) with the sensitivity and classical storytelling of an Ang Lee film. The result is something truly unexpected: romantic, emotionally powerful entertainment.
Customer Reviews:
Best Martial Arts Film Ever.......2007-06-22
Everything has already been said about this film, so I'll put only a short review here.
Why did I use the superlative in the title? Because it seems to be true for me. (The second place belongs to House of Flying Daggers [Region 99].) The story line is not very strong, but much better than you may see in this genre. The romantic threads do not make it too schmaltzy, and the visual design is simply excellent.
Disappointed..........2007-05-28
Although I enjoyed Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi (as always), I didn't enjoy this movie hardly at all. I couldn't believe this was the movie that got such rave reviews and was Oscar nominated etc. I don't say that foolishly, stating that I dislike the movie when really I dislike the genre. That's not it. I just much prefer films like "House of the Flying Daggers" and "Hero" to this one.
Not The Best Martial Arts Movie.......2007-04-05
the cinemotography is pretty good i this movie, but the plot was raw. This movie was okay.
East meets West, and West comes off best. .......2007-02-16
The martial arts film traditionally has attained its own unique niche in the domain of film. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a Chinese-language film that works within the parameters of the old cliches of this niche, but changes just enough to make it stand out and create an appeal that reaches far beyond the limited circle of the average martial art film enthusiast. It doesn't lack the action that one might expect from the typical film in this genre, but it adds something new: the soul of tragedy and romance.
An adaption of a Chinese pulp-fiction novel, the story concerns two secret lovers (the male Li Mu Bai and female Yu Shu Lien) who are warriors on a quest to recapture a legendary sword, the Green Destiny, which has been stolen by a masked bandit. The thief turns out to be the beautiful princess Jen Yu, who is in the middle of trying to avoid an arranged marriage, because she is secretly in love with the desert bandit Lo, whom she grew to love after being abducted in the wilderness. Behind the intrigue and romance of these two forbidden loves, lies the dark cloud of mastermind Jade Fox, the evil woman responsible for the deaths of Mu Bai's former master and of Shu Lien's fiance. This sets the stage for a poignant drama, warm romance, and breath-taking action.
Despite being a martial arts film, the movie breaks the traditional Eastern mould by incorporating romantic elements one would expect from Hollywood. It has well been said that stylistically, it is "a blend of Eastern action and Western psychological drama." I think this assessment is correct, that while on the one hand the film is clearly inspired by martial-arts mysticism and action of the East, underneath the window dressing of the foreign aspects of the film lies the romanticism and drama that one is accustomed to from the West. By catering to what appeals to the modern Western mindset and incorporating subtle criticisms of traditional Chinese culture, it's not surprising that the film was somewhat of a flop in Asia, and that its concessions to contemporary themes of love and feelings made it a breakthrough success in the West. Stephen Greydanus puts it well by remarking: "Ang Lee has here crafted a masterful synthesis of various forms of Chinese mythology and Taoist philosophy that brings a broader perspective to its subject matter than many Asian films including some aspects of more typically Western sensibilities and ideals and, in the end, embraces a gently romantic humanism that is more life-affirming than the esoteric way of detachment and denial characteristic of Eastern thought." Certainly there are allusions to Taoistic mysticism, but the Taoism is in the end rejected in favor of realism and romanticism - which perhaps explains why the movie worked for Western viewers and not for Eastern ones.
The movie has also been the subject of scathing criticism for other reasons, not least from conservative Christian quarters, where offense was taken primarily to the implicit endorsement of extra-marital sexual relations, and the rebellious attitude of Jen toward her parents and her arranged marriage. For the most part, I share this concern, and it's good to be reminded of it. Watching too many movies which advocate the moral laxity of modern culture can dull sensitivity on this point, and unfortunately there aren't enough films on the other extreme to act as correctives.
But perhaps most discussion has been about the ambiguous conclusion (*spoiler warning*), where Jen leaps into the unknown. Lo has just expressed the wish is "to be in the desert, together [with you] again" and then Jen jumps off the cliff into the mist of uncertainty. If it's not suicide, what is it? And what happens next? We don't know. Some have optimistically seen this as a Christological leap of faith and sacrifice with the hope of resurrection, but it seems to me that interpreting this as a message of atonement and resurrection is being too generous and overly charitable. Perhaps the point is that we don't know the ending, and that the movie can only leave it up to us to decide for ourselves. And isn't this typical for a Western culture without absolutes? Maybe this is a reflection of our post-modern culture more than anything. Not only does contemporary culture delight in being morally ambiguous, but as a result it also has an ambiguous eschatology. The best that modern Western film can offer is a nebulous promise of a hope for the future. In other words, our world today doesn't really know much about the afterlife, so it can't really tell us much about it, except offer paradoxes and try to make us come up with our own happy endings. The best promise it can give is a blend of hopeless romanticism and eastern mysticism, where suicide is romanticized as an genuine escape and a leap into another world where perhaps dreams might just come true.
Despite being critical of some of these underlying themes and moral ambiguity, I have to admit that Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is stimulating in raising these questions, in a way that few popular films today do. It remains a fascinating film in what it says about a clash of cultures, and in what it says about our time. The discerning viewer is sure to find some measure of profit and entertainment from this highly regarded and award-winning film. - GODLY GADFLY
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.......2007-02-12
I watched the TV programs first. I understand it must have been difficult to make the long story to short. But the movie didn't reflect the original plot. Since I like Michelle Yoe and Zhan Ziyi, I bought the movie. But I didn't really enjoy it. I couldn't understand the ending, either. I wonder why it got the awrad. Anyway, I recommend "Hero" if you like to enjoy fantazy kun fu movies.

Anne Frank: The Whole Story delivers exactly what it promises: the incredibly moving complete story of Anne Frank, going beyond what the Jewish teenage girl wrote in her widely read diary. Anne, along with her family and friends of her family, hid in a secret annex behind her father's office in Amsterdam during the Nazi occupation of Holland. She dutifully kept a diary, which became a worldwide bestseller when her father published it in the 1950s. The story has been adapted for television and movies before, but this version, which played on ABC television, moves beyond what Anne wrote, meeting up with the Frank family before Anne receives her diary, and following her past the diary's last entries into Auschwitz and Birkenau. Hannah Taylor Gordon is a superb Anne, bringing to life the multifaceted girl, in turns intelligent, dreamy, creative, spoiled, and bratty, a girl like any other except that Anne is a Jew in Nazi-occupied Holland. The only one who outshines Gordon is Ben Kingsley as Anne's father, Otto Frank. His quiet performance is extraordinarily powerful; as he watches his family slip away, it is impossible not to feel his grief. This brave film is difficult in parts to watch--the concentration camp scenes are brutal--but this is a remarkable adaptation of Anne's life, and it is a film to be shared and discussed and remembered. --Jenny Brown

Education Review.......2007-06-27
I used this movie for my 8th grade class and they loved it. The only problem is that you have to manually edit it as there is a nudity scene as they are in the concentration camp. This movie gives a new perspective to the students of Anne Frank after they have read her diary. I thought it was a great movie.

Excellent DVD - my son watched it in school and was so touched by it that he wanted to whole family to watch it. It was very moving. A great DVD.
The most compelling movie ever ?.......2007-03-27
I recently read the book, and then bought the DVD straight afterwards. Seeing Ben Kingsley's name on the credits brought me hope that his inclusion would enhance the film...but I was not prepared for the stunning, moving, and totally compelling piece of movie making i was to see. I must admit my heart sank, when I read it was a Disney production, but full marks to them for such an undertaking, so magnifically produced.
The locations and scenery were totally believable from Anne's flawless descriptions, and the acting from all concerned totally breathtaking. The way that clips from original war scenes were included only served to enhance the belief that one was living it as in a documentary.
The young actress , playing Anne, only fourteen years old, but bringing out a stunning performance that belied her young age.Hannah Taylor - Gordon gave her all in a range of emotions that showed Anne to be a normal teenage girl, with all her doubts, fears, dreams and intentions placed in a totally restrictive situation, as when in hiding, and in adesperate savage situation as when in the concentration camps...she deserves total praise for her role.
Her totally devoted father..Ben Kingsley, played his part as the middle class, reserved parent with total professionalism..his breaking down at the end of the film, was heartwrenching. Anne's slightly repressed mother..always doing the "right thing", was splendidly portrayed by Brenda Blethyn..and all the other characters played their parts so believably.
The film follows the story of anne , from her carefree days, with her school friends to the bitter end..and I cannot say I have seen a film that moved me so much, in all my 56 years. To think that Anne Frank died only two weeks before the British liberated the camp at Belsen - Birkenau , totally breaks my heart...and moves me to view the film again in a different light...if only !!!!!

A true saga of "loving your neighbor as thyself" .......2007-03-13
The Hiding Place
A true saga of "loving your neighbor as thyself"
[146 minutes - genre: reality and drama]
In a manuscript from the 1st century AD one reads
<
< "You have heard that it was said `An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.'" But I say to you Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also ..." "You have heard that it was said, `You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven...">> [words of Jesus, gospel manuscript according to Matthew]
"The Hiding Place, is one of the most extraordinary true stories to come out of World War II. Filmed in Holland and other authentic European locations, the film traces the lives of Corrie ten Boom, her father, and sister Betsie, from the quiet years before WWII, to their work with the `under-ground' in helping to save the lives of countless Jewish families. The ultimate price they pay for their efforts is arrest and imprisonment in one of Nazi Germany's most dreaded concentration camps. In the midst of monstrous cruelty and suffering, Corrie and Betsie must face the greatest test of their faith in God and their ability to love mankind." [DVD jacket description]
Los Angeles Times calls it "It is that rarest of rarities, a film of shining, triumphant spirituality."
The acting was flawless, the cinematography could not be more authentic [accurate details of life in a `work-camp'], but what shined above all else was the testimony of faith and courage of this Christian Dutch family. Their morals and religious ethics came first, not only in times of freedom, or Nazi occupation, but also in times of despair living in sub-human conditions of the Nazi `lager' [concentration camp].
The end is as dramatic as the rest of the story itself -
"Years later it was learned my release came through a clerical error. ... Some questions remain, but they are not to be feared. Out heavenly Father holds all things in His hands. Even our questions. ... No pit is so deep, that He is not deeper still. With Jesus even in our darkest moments, the best remains, and the very best is yet to be. ... I promised my sister - I would tell it - and I tell you."
What a beautiful testimony of living as a child of God and loving one's neighbor and also one's enemies.
engaging movie.......2007-01-19
Nice movie on the topic, particularly for Christians,
(good choice of movies at Easter time).
The Hiding Place.......2007-01-06
I am researching the life of Corrie Ten Boom, and found the depiction of her life from the movie was portrayed quite well! The horrifying events that lead up to the Holocaust were unknown to me. I did not come from the era that it is still so fresh upon the hearts of all men. Only those that remember and lived it. My eyes were opened even more by this beautiful movie to a time that as a country and world we should never forget, lest it happen again and again. Corrie's courage is just one of millions of souls that suffered this horrendous ordeal. Allow her story to touch your heart as it did mine. Enjoy this film!
Too much misinformation here!.......2006-10-11
In a number of the reviews, I've read that "nobody survived except Corrie."
Simply not true. Her sister died, her father died, and one of her many nephews died. After her release from the camp, she returned to her surviving brother and sister-in-law (brother died in '46 from tuberculosis), and her surviving sister, who had also been arrested and imprisoned. And many nieces and nephews as well.
One poster asks "what did they accomplish by their sacrifice?" Beyond the fact that they weren't trying to "sacrifice" anything, but rather just living their faith to the best of their ability, the poster doesn't seem to realize that they were part of the Dutch Underground. They were part of an organizational system that saved, and got ration cards, for hundreds of Jews. The Ten Boom home transferred many Jews to safer hiding places, as did others. They did it as part of a network of people, many of whom were ordinary and clumsy and inexperienced, and deceived eventually by informers.
Of the five eventual "permanent" residents, four survived the war. The fifth, an elderly woman, was arrested while walking the street in daylight.
Please check facts before you post!

The Ronald Reagan 1980s were all about going back to the future--rewriting the past to better suit Reagan's upbeat vision of the present. So, Sylvester Stallone's John Rambo (a psychotic, shell-shocked Vietnam vet in the original film, transformed into a flag-waving hero in the sequel) was able to go back to Southeast Asia and "correct" history by decisively (and single-handedly) winning that messy ol' war on behalf of America. Red Dawn is a paranoid cold-war cautionary tale that presents us not with a rosy alternative past, but with an ominous vision of the future, metaphorically plopping a piece of Russian-occupied Afghanistan into America's back yard. In this celebration of the Second Amendment, storm troopers from the Evil Empire descend upon the inadequately defended United States and hold America hostage. Stealthily avoiding the invaders, a motley group of red-blooded, small-town, gun-toting teenagers go underground to form the Wolverines, a guerilla resistance squad dedicated to making those Russkies rue the day they parachuted onto U.S. soil. It's a darn good thing those kids had the right to keep and bear arms, huh! Written and directed by macho filmmaker John Milius, the self-described "Zen fascist" who also cowrote Apocalypse Now, as well as the horrifying shark story Robert Shaw tells in Jaws. The cast includes Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson, Jennifer Grey (a few years before she and Swayze took up Dirty Dancing), Charlie Sheen, Powers Boothe, Harry Dean Stanton, and Ben Johnson. Red Dawn was a commercial success, although audiences invariably split into two camps, finding it either patriotic or appalling. Whatever your verdict, the film remains a telling reflection of its era. --Jim Emerson
Description
Red Dawn opens with one of the most shocking scenes ever filmed; on a peaceful morning, through the windows of a high school classroom, students see paratroopers land on the varsity football field: the invasion of the United States has begun! As their town is overrun by foreign nationals, eight teenagers escape to the mountains. Taking the name of their high school football team, the Wolverines, they wage unremitting guerrilla warfare in defense of their parents, their friends and their country. Powerful, chilling and absolutely gripping, this outstanding film features some of today's most popular stars, including Patrick Swayze (Ghost), Charlie Sheen (Platoon), C. Thomas Howell (The Hitcher), Lea Thompson ("Caroline in the City"), Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing) and veteran actor Harry Dean Stanton (Alien). When it comes to thrilling entertainment, Red Dawn wins the war with a vengeance!
Customer Reviews:
The best PG-13 movie ever made.......2007-07-04
I first watched "Red Dawn" on HBO as a kid. The patriotism that it instilled drove me to join the US Army. The scenery is amazing, the plot line sufficient, and the characters are amazing. Rarely will you find a movie that commands the presence of so many key characters. From the mayor's patriotically weak son, the first generation Mexican-immigrant boy with the will to fight for the country he loves, to the stereotypical "good 'ol boys" who ultimately instill the futility of war in an enemy commanding general, you're forced to realize all that America has to offer to a potential occupational force.
This is a must watch for anyone who displays a yellow ribbon, believes in the American way or is just up for a movie that spans the gambit of American values and determination.
Guerilla Youths Fend Off Soviet Communist Invasion........2007-06-30
_Red Dawn_ (1984) is an excellent film by John Milius (also famous for _Apocalypse Now_ (1979) and as an anti-gun control law advocate) which came out in 1984 when Ronald Reagan was president during the height of much Cold War hysteria. The movie is about a joint Soviet and Cuban invasion of the United States. The movie asks us to imagine the following scenario: "The Soviet Union suffers worst wheat harvest in 55 years. Labor and food riots in Poland, Soviet troops invade. Cuba and Nicaragua reach troop strength goals of 500,000. El Salvador and Honduras fall. Greens party gains control of West German parliament. Demands withdrawal of nuclear weapons from European soil. Mexico plunged into revolution. NATO dissolves. United States stands alone." Following this scenario the Soviet communists invade the United States, crossing the Bering Strait, while Latin America rises up from the South and attacks. The movie takes place in a small Colorado town where a band of high school students (calling themselves the Wolverines) must work together to fight off the Soviet threat. As guerilla forces these students move up into the mountains where they continually wage war against the Soviet invaders. Their hometown becomes compromised and they must fend off the Red Menace. The movie is interesting in that it shows how the people and in particular the youth must rise up and fend off tyranny. It is to be noted that the brave bands who form together are not members of the army but are ordinary citizens. In this respect, the movie is to be commended.
The movie begins with an ordinary day at high school. While their history teacher is discussing the ancient military tactics of the Mongol hordes (eerily foreshadowing things to immediately come), who repeatedly invaded Europe in ancient times and thus forced the people to fend off their menace, a group of Soviet paratroopers suddenly land on the school grounds. The teacher goes out to meet them but is quickly gunned down. Thus, begins the ensuing struggle, which we later learn is merely a part of World War III, the invasion of the United States by communists. A band of students must join together to fight them off, while their parents remain in the town. The students head for the mountains where they live, periodically returning to the town for supplies. Later, we are to learn that many of their parents (particularly the ones who were viewed as trouble-makers) were sent off to re-education camps. As with the Soviets in Russia, these euphemistically named camps are nothing more than torture and death camps. The students must hunt for food, relying on ancient Indian lore and making use of the Indian rite of drinking the blood of a slaughtered deer to attain its powers. Throughout the year the students begin to fight off the Soviets using guerilla tactics against them. The students call themselves "the Wolverines", which one Soviet notes are "small vicious animals". Thus, begins the war with the imperialist Soviet menace. It should also be noted that the mayor of the town collaborates with the Soviet invaders and gives over the names of dissidents in exchange for his life and security. Thus is the way with all politicians. One of the extraordinary facts about this film is that the people involved can no longer rely on the government to fend off tyrants for them. Thus, it is necessary to take up arms and fight for their homeland themselves. In this spirit, the original frontier tradition of the American revolutionaries lives on in these brave bands of freedom fighters. To see how the movie resolves and how freedom is won back from would-be tyrants you must watch it for yourself.
Of course, this movie has been greeted with the usual chorus of detractors and naysayers who claim that it is "right wing propaganda". Such latter-day Soviet apologists simply fail to see the horrors innate within Soviet power. It is unfortunate that today many would gladly witness the ideals upon which America was founded perish rather than to stand up and fight for them. However, this is the situation in which many Americans exist today.
This movie is highly recommended and is certain to entertain. While it does feature fighting and bloodshed which may horrify the squeamish (it was the first movie to receive a PG-13 rating), the message from it is a positive one. Freedom does come with a price, and that price must often by won by standing up to tyranny.
First movie with a Pg-13 rating. . Ive listed what special features the new version has below........2007-06-22
Red dawn is a classic 80s movie from writer director John Milius. Milius also co wrote the screenplay for the brilliant Apocalypse Now which he shared an oscar nomination with Frances Ford Coppola.
I also learned this was the first movie to get a Pg-13 rating from the mpaa after public outcry of the violence in pg rated movies such as Indiana Jones and the temple of doom, and Gremlins.(movieweb)
I own about 1200 dvds and i actually do not have this one, so i will splurge and get this new collectors edition. I've listed some info below about the new version i found on the internet hopefully it helps. Thanks for reading.

WOLVERINES !!.......2007-06-20
Though some people may think that this movie is far fetched because it depicts teenage men and women taking on a communist invasion, I believe that this is a very good movie.
If somehow something like this did happen I think that it is very likely that there would be civilian freedom fighters, look at past wars and invasions and this happens. If you were in this situation would you set back and let them win or would you take up arms and fight for your family, friends, country and freedom.
This movie brings about a very strong feeling of patriotism ( Something our country needs much more of) and is very good to watch around independence day.
"WOLVERINES!!!!"
Red Dawn Revisited.......2007-05-21
The first time I saw this in the mid 80s I thought it was kind of cool, with great action, and a bit over the top. I never bought it because I just didn't think it was worth owning. Over the years as I have seen this on TV I realized this was worthy of a revisit to my initial opinion. As I have grown in age, I realized these young teens are thrown into a whole different world and their over-acting if you will, is quite honestly nothing more than I think a teen would do when stressed to this point. After all they lose their families and their world is turned upside down. What am I talking about, any adult would over-act as well in this kind of post holocaust situation. Basicly become distraught and over emotional.
So all things considered this movie deserves much more credit than it typically gets from critics. It is a good fictional story. The action and special effects are well done. I finally ordered a copy for my DVD library. Don't wait till you have seen it at least a half dozen times on TV like me. The commercials are to painful for that. You can even buy it with "Navy Seals" in a two pack for less than fifteen dollars. "Navy Seals" is a reasonably good movie as well and for about seven dollars and change each it is a good deal. Navy Seals has Charlie Sheen, Michael Biehn, Bill Paxton, Dennis Haysbert, and several other familiar faces. Good action movie that most people will enjoy. So grab a Big Gulp and a big bowl of popcorn and make an afternoon of it.

"I like that. Turn it up!" Performance is the Altamont of '60s cinema; psychedelic and hallucinatory, decadent and depraved, polymorphous-perverse. And you can dance to it! Melding the sex, drugs, and rock & roll ethos of swinging '60s London with the gangster film, Nicolas Roeg and Donald Cammell's genre-bending cult classic is so mind blowing that star James Fox did not act in a film again for nearly a decade. Fox stars as Chas, an "out of date" enforcer for crime kingpin Harry Flowers. Chas is a "nutcase," who likes "a little cavort," but when he kills someone he wasn't supposed to, he is forced to go on the lam. He takes refuge in a basement room belonging to Turner (Mick Jagger), a former rock star who has "lost his demon" and now lives as a recluse in his dilapidated house with his secretary/lover, Pherber (Anita Pallenberg, who was Rolling Stones bandmate Keith Richards' girlfriend at the time), and an androgynous French girl (Michele Breton). They enjoy a little cavorting themselves. In these drug-strewn surroundings, worlds collide and identities merge. "I know who I am," Chas tells Harry early on. He (and viewers) will become less sure as Performance unfolds. Completed in 1968 but shelved for two years, Performance was originally rated X and has been redesignated R. But it's still strong, potent stuff. With its elliptical editing, mirror images, and echoed dialogue that bridges the two worlds, Performance may not become clearer with repeat viewings, but there are fresh discoveries to be made each time. The killer soundtrack features Randy Newman, Ry Cooder, rap revolutionaries the Last Poets, and Jagger's own astounding "Memo from Turner." "I know a thing of two about performing, my boy," Turner tells Chas at one point. "The only performance that makes it... that makes it all the way, is the one that achieves madness." Performance makes it all the way. As Roeg is quoted in a featurette produced for this DVD, "After all this time, its mystery is part of its magic and attraction." --Donald Liebenson
Description
Psychological drama about a criminal on the run who hides out with a rock star.
Customer Reviews:
Performance.......2007-06-27
Good to see the film again. Kind of a cult classic as I see it.
Performance.......2007-06-13
This is a classic of its time; it is predominantly a gangster film, with Jagger playing an indulgent, wealthy, drug-addled rock star holed up in a house in Notting Hill Gate. The gangster aspects are a lot more compelling than the "decadent" scenes with Jagger, Breton and Pallenberg, which might have been fascinating at the time but now seem quite dated and stilted in their acting.
Good for a snapshot of contrasting social worlds in London in the end of the 6os.
The Mick Jagger Fake Book.......2007-06-05
I like this movie, like the music, the acting is good, the mushroom looks pretty. James Fox, Anita Pallenburg are very convincing. The Artsy psychedelic style is right up my alley. Mick Jagger is basically playing himself, is he fake or real? However, when it comes to cult classics, this film doesn't stack up with some of the better ones. If it's movie party time, I would probably pick El Topo, or Beyond the Valley of the Dolls or Eraserhead over this one. Sorry, Donald and Nick.
So Relieved to have a DVD.......2007-05-13
I am thrilled to have a DVD version of this creative piece of genius with the commentaries included, particularly those by the late Donald Cammell and his brother. It's shocking to see Anita Pallenberg remembering that Keith Richards sat outside of the Powis Square house nervously waiting for Mick and Anita's love scenes to be finished. In 1970 I was part of the Billie B Shears Film Group which brought PERFORMANCE to Milwaukee to be shown at a church hall resulting in my viewing it 35 or so times. Through some cosmic joke this then high school teacher from the midwest began to personally connect with individuals involved in the film: Sandy Lieberson walking into my locked hotel room in Toronto in 1972; on a whim calling the Monte Martre and speaking with Donald Cammell who then sent me a copy of an early version of the screen play--very different ending; reading all of Jorge Luis Borges' works and then hanging with him on 2 of his visits to the US--one in which he regained his eyesight and commented that it was so he could see my face.... I use to say "Everything relates to PERFORMANCE" and everything still does...The DVD is more than worth waiting for.
Hallucinatory........2007-05-12
Performance (Donald Cammell and Nicolas Roeg, 1970)
While I have to say that I'm never entirely sure what either Cammell (Demon Seed) or Roeg (Walkabout) are entirely on about, I do know that the both of them do make pictures that are very easy on the eyes. It's very easy to sit back, relax, and just get lost in the lushness of Performance. Who gives a whit about, well, what it's about?
What it is about, though, is a gangster named Chas (Sexy Beast's James Fox) who, on the run from his old gang, ends up renting a room in the house of reclusive rocker Turner (Mick Jagger). Turner's life is sex- and drug-fueled, but there's far more to him than that; he's a decadent philosopher who finds Chas' protestations of innocence (he claims to be a juggler, though everyone sees through that as soon as it's uttered) intriguing. Chas, on his end of the odd relationship, is simply trying to hole up until he can get out of the country. You've seen enough British gangster films to know that this will not end well.
It all rolls along like gangbusters, absolutely fascinating, until a Rolling Stones video is injected not long before the end. I assume it was in Mick Jagger's contract. But hey, the song isn't all bad. Aside from that, a fine little film that's been neglected for too long. *** ½

Kids will love this sweeping story of two brothers whose plane crashes on a mysterious island called Dinotopia, where human beings live in harmony with dinosaurs--the herbivores, anyway. The carnivores present a problem, as the humans' defenses against them--a mystical power source called sunstones--are losing strength. As they try to save the island, Carl and David (Tyron Leitso and Wentworth Miller) struggle not only with tyrannosaurs and prehistoric crocodiles, but also with repressive Dinotopian traditions and a scheming malcontent (David Thewlis) who stirs up all kinds of trouble. Meanwhile, they also wrestle with each other over the lovely daughter of the mayor of Waterfall City (Katie Carr). The pacifist ideals of Dinotopia are refreshing, but it's the special effects that will hook viewers: riding on the backs of brachiosaurs, flying atop pteranadons, arguing in court with triceratops and ankylosaurs--anyone fascinated with dinosaurs (and who isn't?) will enjoy this whimsical fantasy. A host of British character actors also helps keep the human side of this four-hour miniseries lively; Alice Krige (also known as the Borg Queen in Star Trek: The Next Generation) gets a much more benevolent role here. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
Fabulous graphics, refreshing scenes with min violence, cute love story & entertaining!.......2007-06-25
I never read the Dinotopia books as a child so watching this movie was a real treat! I did not have any book storylines to make comparison while watching it so I just went along for the ride and watched all three series on Sci Fi channel one night. The two brothers, David & Tyron, (Wentworth Miller and Carl Scott in real life) had a love & hate or typical rivalry many brothers go through, especially "half-brothers" and it could teach some lessons to kids that "love defeats everything". When their father's plane crashed and they ended in an uncharted island, the adventure begins. Naturally, the two were in awe of the place where dinosaurs and humans live in harmony. Humans are descendants of those who also ended up in the island but could not go back to their former homes. The brothers became infatuated with the same girl, Marion (Katie Carr, the Waterfall City's daughter who studied Dinasaurs since her childhood. She loves nature and animals so Tyron and David learned many things from her about Dinotopia. There is also an intelligent/professor dinosaur named Zippo who helped the two brothers save the island. Of course, there is a villain who's main goal is to get out of the island so just watch for him.
As the movie progress, David, an introvert, became a pilot flying on skybacks in a place that resembled The Grand Canyon while the extrovert David had to learn patience through nursing a baby dinasaur. I puchased the DVD set so my toddler can watch it and enjoy the story when he's old enough to understand the plots... This is a great family movie despite the negative reviews others have posted. Don't let that deter from watching it because it is a treat for those who appreciate good movies other than sex and violence which you won't find here! The graphics especially of Waterfall City was just fab! Need not to mention Prison Break star Wentworth Miller starred here as one of his first major roles.
Dinorific!.......2007-06-08
Along with my kids (ranging in age from 5-17), I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The graphics are excellent and the storyline kept us all glued to the television. Violence is at a minimum and there is no swearing or nudity. Clean family enjoyment.
Dinosaurs.......2007-04-17
I bought this DVD for my boys ages 4 and 7. They absolutely love this movie. Since it is a mini series they never actually get through watching the whole thing but they do like what they end up seeing. The story is, of course, completely unrealistic but what isn't these days? The acting is just OK and the story is a little over my younger ones head but there are dinosaurs...and that's all that really matters.. It is worth it if your kids like anything having to do with prehistoric creatures.
Boringtopia.......2007-04-12
I'm not even sure why ABC thinks they can get away with naming their movies after books. They aren't usually very inspired about following the books or they do a bad job getting actors, set makers, and CGI artists. The vast majority of their movies I have seen were boring. So unless you really are bored or you just want background for something else you are doing I can't recommend this movie. I hadn't read the book, but I knew enough about them to know this movie did a poor job trying to emulate it. Not only that I approached this with an open mind, but about a half hour in I knew this was a stinker. Small children may be slightly entertained but I doubt it as the two boys fight all the time and do really stupid things.
Dinotopia.......2007-03-09
Dinotopia is a 1st class movie and series. A delight to watch. Such a terrible shame the ABC USA decided to scrap them. There is no "blood and guts splatter" in these movies, just good family entertainment. Great animation, the characters really do look like they are interacting with the Dinosaurs. The Dinotopia series continues the high quality viewing, and by buying the series too you will see episodes that never went to air because the plug was pulled half way through. Absolutely Fabulous.

Amazon.com essential video
Few actresses have captivated the camera as powerfully as Dorothy Dandridge in Carmen Jones. Her polished beauty plays in irresistible contrast to her title character's leonine sexuality and fluid emotions; a man can't decide from moment to moment if he wants to save her from doom, build her a castle, or never let her out of bed. Of course, that's the problem with the boys in this semi-experimental adaptation of Bizet's opera, Carmen. Straight-arrow Joe (a strapping Harry Belafonte), an obedient corporal on a Southern military base during World War II, is all set to go to flight school and marry his hometown sweetie, Cindy Lou (Olga James), when his troublemaking sergeant orders him to accompany Carmen to a civilian court. In short order, Joe is swept up in Carmen's carnal anarchy and her craving for release from lousy options in life. An impulsive act of violence ensures that Joe's future is gone forever, putting Carmen in the difficult position of destroying their relationship to save him. Oscar Hammerstein II took Bizet's music in 1943 and rewrote the book and lyrics. The result is largely a smashing success with a few missteps (the bullfighter in Bizet's piece becomes a heavyweight boxer here, which breaks up a certain grace in the story) and a couple of perfect stretches (the long prelude to Carmen and Joe's first embrace, set on Carmen's hoodoo-ish home turf). Despite the fact that both Dandridge and Belafonte were singers, their vocal performances were dubbed by LeVern Hutcherson and Marilyn Horne. (Yes, it is a little disconcerting to hear another voice come out of the more familiar Belafonte's mouth.) Otto Preminger directed with his usual eye on economy of action and production, as the numerous musical numbers tend to be shot in lengthy, single, carefully choreographed takes. The result can be a little visually static at times, but the passion behind the singing pulls everything through. --Tom Keogh
Description
Powered by Georges Bizet's grand music and Oscar Hammerstein II's magnificent lyrics, this Americanized all-black version of the classic opera Carmen is "a dynamic superb show" with a positively "incandescent Carmen." (Newsweek) Oscar® -nominee Dorothy Dandridge stars in the title role, a passionate, sexy creature who lures Joe (Harry Belafonte), a handsome soldier, away from his sweetheart (Olga James). Following a fatal brawl with his sergeant, Joe deserts his regiment with the sultry femme fatale. But Carmen soon tires of him and takes up with a heavyweight prize-fighter (Joe Adams). Triggering Joe's tragic revenge. Helping to set the screen on fire are Pearl Bailey and Diahann Carroll, part of the "sensational troupe" that makes this jubilant musical film "hard to beat."
Customer Reviews:
Carmen Jones.......2007-06-25
One of the first films with an all-black cast targeted to white as well as black audiences, Preminger's film reflects a seamless transference of Bizet's tale and music to the mid-twentieth century. The movie stands out for Dandridge's searing, Oscar-nominated portrayal (with her singing voice dubbed by Marilyn Horne), and for the platform it provided African-American performers Pearl Bailey (as fortuneteller Frankie) and Diahann Carroll. Sadly, Dandridge would die in obscurity of a drug overdose in 1965, but "Carmen" remains a testament to her striking beauty and prodigious talent.
Carmen Jones a Spectacular Tale.......2007-03-29
I loved this movie as a child and I purchased it in order to introduce my daughter to Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte. Many children do not realize who these icons are and how they paved the way for other prominent Black actors. This is a family movie that everyone can enjoy. The story is just as rich today as it was 40 years ago.
Fabulous Bizet movie in english!.......2007-03-24
Wonderful way to hear Bizet's music and see the USA in the 40's. And the actors are surperb!
Joe - Thanks, but I don't drink........2007-03-08
Carmen Jones - Boy, if the army was made up of nothin' but soldiers like you, war wouldn't do nobody no good.
Adapted from a legendary opera, Carmen, and the successful Broadway musical, it is a timeless story which explores the consequences when a deep devotion leads to personal anguish and then to intense, tragic rage.
The movie won a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture and Dorothy Dandridge
