Get the Deep-Woods Off! It's a mosquito the size of a German shepherd, armed with a proboscis as big around as a carrot, which it jabs into various eye sockets, chests, thighs, and even butt-cheeks! When a UFO crashes into a swamp, swarms of these mutated, oversized bugs go out looking for victims. A hapless couple smacks one of the outsized insects (filled with what appears to be stewed tomatoes and cranberry sauce) with their car, disabling the auto and leaving them stranded. They soon hook up with a government scientist, run afoul of two half-wit militia types, commandeer an RV, and make a break for it. The uneasy allies eventually make it to a farmhouse where they board up the windows à la Night of the Living Dead (or Assault on Precinct 13) to make a last stand against the marauding bloodsuckers. If it all sounds goofy, that's because it is. On the downside, the dialogue is rotten and the acting is all rather casual (except for the scientist, whose overacting makes up for the rest of the cast's slack performances). On the upside, there's no cheesy computer animation; it's all done with cheesy '60s-style miniatures and puppets instead. Horror fans will recognize Gunnar Hansen, Texas Chainsaw Massacre's Leatherface; he's even given a chance to do battle with the bloodthirsty bugs with his old weapon of choice, a 24-inch Homelite! Also, rock fans should notice Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton! Just don't take this big-bug saga too seriously (nobody involved does), keep an eye out for boom-mic shadows, shut down a few sections of your brain, and go with it. After all, this is the kind of movie that would have made it big on the drive-in circuit some 30 years ago. --Jerry Renshaw

A year after his American film debut, Peter Weir reteamed with his Witness star (Harrison Ford) for a tricky adaptation of Paul Theroux's novel of a modern man who takes his family into the jungle. The results are mixed, but the film is galvanized by Ford's atypical performance as inventor/madman Allie Fox. Paul Schrader's script sets up Allie as a man who follows his idea: that America is dying and the real "four-in-the-morning courage" is found in returning to the essence of life, here the jungles of a fictional Central American country (it was shot in Belize). With his family in tow (including Helen Mirren and River Phoenix), Allie creates a utopia when his inventions create a local sensation, but seedier elements from bandits to evangelicals (led by Andre Gregory) take their toll. Certainly, it's hard to root for a central character who is unpleasant ("a know-it-all who is sometimes right," as one states), and the film's second half is not as interesting. But Weir's film is logical and true in its progression and, as usual, is beautifully crafted (he also reteams with the cinematographer, editor, and composer of Witness). Ford's rawness is reminiscent of many an actor's foray into the meaty role of an independent film--which this film is certainly not--and, unfortunately, it was not the direction he ultimately pursued. --Doug Thomas
Description
Harrison Ford gives one of his most powerful portrayals as an obsessive inventor whose dream of creating a jungle paradise erodes into a survival-of-the-fittest nightmare. Year: 1986 Director: Peter Weir Starring: Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, River Phoenix
Customer Reviews:
The troubled inventor ..........2007-06-13
The movie is based on a book by the prodigal Paul Theroux. It is centered around Allie Fox (Harrison Ford) and his family's migration to the remote and enigmatic Mosquito Coast. The tropical jungle gives Allie a virgin ground for creating a superior civilization. Surprisingly, he thinks ice is synonymous with civilization and builds a monstrous machine that generates ice, air-conditioning and condensed water. The ice-making machine is called Fat Boy. It is a giant manifestation of his creative genius. He hikes (lugging ice blocks) to remote Indian villages to proudly show them ice that he created. Not surprisingly, the Fat Boy initiates the sudden collapse of his remote & superior civilization. Thereafter, he gets madly obsessed to create another (more elemental) civilization on an unmapped place and exposes his family to great peril, hardships and hunger. He nurtures a strong dislike towards the missionaries operating in rural-rural Mosquito. His dislike towards them and the disappointment of failing in multiple attempts to create & sustain a civilization leads him to burning down a mission city. The reprisal is strong and he is shot & fatally wounded.
If you've read the book, then (subconsciously) you'll be trying to relate every scene to the book and will always be disappointed because the movie seems to move very fast. At times it'll be digressing from the book's story line and other times, it'll be an exact enactment. The mental picture painted by the mind while reading the book is very vivid & colorful compared to the scenes depicted in the movie.
I think movies based on wonderful & compelling books/novels should spend some time building the initial story (as in the book). In the movie, it would have helped if the director would have spent some more time showing Allie, his family members, his creational genius and his plot to migrate to the Mosquito Coast. The director should not assume that everyone watching the movie has read the book. That is the best approach for a mixed audience (folks who have read the book & folks who have not).
Nonetheless, the movie is watchable. Harrison Ford (as Allie) shines and the dramatic Mosquito Coast scenery & rugged jungle beauty is alluring and well shot. I particularly liked the shots of the tiny boat coasting upstream amidst thick jungle whilst being bathed in tropical sunshine. Fat Boy's manifestation is very impressive. The movie will leave you with a very strong afterthought about the manmade creations. To be honest, we are in very many ways (despite the luxuries) a forsaken captive of our own creation.
The movie's background score is lackluster. A good music score would have complemented the jungle backdrop.
One of the Best Damn 'Classical-American' Films Ever Made.......2007-03-26
I am disgusted at editorial reviews of this film that claim Allie Fox to be eccentric, mad and obsessive- do not be fooled by the rambling of these idiots.
This film is not about a madman, it is about an idealist. If you believe America to be the Land of Oppurtunity- not the Land of Result, if you believe in hard work; if you believe in technocracy; if you believe that a mans destiny is determined by what he makes it, that that destiny is not to be left alone to God, but that God made Man intelligent and strong so that he could survive and better his world; if you believe that a mans efforts, thoughts and struggles are the things which compose his body, blood and soul- that these efforts are worth dying for, that they are a mans life and that those who would take them from him are taking no less than his life and are no less than murderers and thieves; if you believe these things to be true then this movie is for you. On the other hand, if you're a mosquito and any of these things make you feel uncomfortable then this movie was not meant for you- however such evil creatures as yourself may find the film enjoyable as you may choose to morbidly relish in the struggle and pains of the protagonist.
The film is deep and intelligent and riddled with powerful lines and scenes; the details of which I wouldn't dare reveal to you. I will say that The Mosquito Coast is a tragedy that brings some comfort in knowing that one is not the only one who thinks as one does- that the world of Good Men is not entirely lonely. I more than highly recommend The Mosquito Coast- it is a film not to be missed.
He dropped out of Harvard - to get an education..........2006-12-30
This movie not only has one of the best actors ever taking the lead role - it has a great storyline. Harrison Ford's character is a little on the weird side, but is also very easy for the viewer to relate to in one way or the other.
How many people living in America have thought about the possiblity of leaving the country? How many people would love to experience what a more simplistic way of life could be without feeling bogged down by all of our modern technologies and so-called advancements? Yet very few ever take the risk...
Although Allie is disenchanted with what America has become over the years, he is also psychologically fitted with a traditional protestant work ethic; the same mindset upon which America was built - this irony is seen by the decisions he makes throughout the film, and this drives him to insanity.
The characters surrounding Allie create the conflict within the film, most notably his son Charlie (played by River Pheonix), who narrates during the film and tells the events from his point of view. Charlie respected his father but also was able to recognize the progressive decay of his father's mental health. As the oldest (there is a younger son and daughter), Charlie takes a role of leadership within the family and sometimes has to stand up to his own rolemodel.
Allie's wife (whom he refers to as 'Mother'), is played by Helen Mirren. Her struggle in the film is seen by her submissiveness to Allie and her dedication to him often blinding her to the sickness of her husband, and thus preventing her from not allowing her family to make correct decisions.
There is a missionary whom Allie argues with which adds to the film's philosophical tension. At times you wish different descisions had been made, the direction of the storyline may frustrate you, but I believe this was the filmmakers intension - human nature can be unpredictable, untrustworthy, flawed.
Faith vs willpower, simplicity vs complexity, technology vs nature, self- fullfillment vs group responsibility...this film has it all. A MUST SEE!!!
Hopefully I have left the storyline somewhat ambiguous for those who have not seen this movie, and perhaps those who haven't seen it in a long time. I will finish this review with one of my favorite quotes from the film to further convince you of the brilliance of 'The Mosquito Coast':
"We eat when we're not hungry, drink when we're not thirsty. We buy what we don't need and throw away everything that's useful. Why sell a man what he wants? Sell him what he doesn't need. Pretend he's got eight legs and two stomachs and money to burn. It's wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong." -Allie Fox (Harrison Ford)
RECOMMENDATION: If you are looking for some other great films from 80's with great acting and storytelling then 'Gorillas in the Mist' should be next on your list. Sigourney Weaver gives her best performance in this film that is based on the real life events of the scientist Dian Fossey. Filmed on sight in Africa with the real mountain gorillas that Dian studied...BEAUTIFUL, MOVING, BRILLIANT.
Warning!! Not a happy ending!.......2006-10-14
This is one of those thoughtful, well acted movies with a deeply unsatisfying conclusion. If you like such things, have at it. If you like happy endings, avoid it.
If they'd only taken some guns..........2006-10-12
A great study of the consequences of indulging in utopian idealism without either practicality or realistic preparedness. Harrison Ford plays a man who has a great dream of living in the wilderness isolated from civilization, but who is dangerously naive about both nature and human nature, and therefore woefully underprepared to deal with the menaces of both. A true classic.

World War II aviation buffs may quibble with details in Mosquito Squadron, but they'll love it just the same. It's an average war movie, capably directed by Boris Sagal, who thrived in television before he was tragically killed by a helicopter rotor in 1981. At the peak of his post-Man from U.N.C.L.E. success, David McCallum plays a melancholy RAF ace, leading his squadron of De Havilland "Mosquito" bombers on low-altitude strikes over Nazi strongholds in Germany and France. His ground-based dilemma involves the grieving wife of his best friend, a fellow pilot presumed dead but later discovered alive with other POWs held at a French chalet where the Nazis are developing advanced V-class bombers. The RAF employs bouncing "highballs" capable of penetrating difficult targets, and the rousing climax doubles as a rescue mission and treacherous bombing run. Explosive action compensates for predictable melodrama, and Rocky Horror fans will enjoy seeing Charles ("the Criminologist") Gray as a stuffy RAF Commodore. --Jeff Shannon
Description
David McCallum ("The Man From U.N.C.L.E.") stars in an epic adventure that perfectly captures the explosive action and emotional torment of war. With its astonishing special effects, stark cinematography and brilliantly choreographed aerial combat sequences, Mosquito Squadron catapults the viewer into the searing heat of battle! As Allied forces struggle against the awesome might of the German Luftwaffe, an even greater threat is posed by the destructive V3 rocket nearing completion at a secret testing center. The Royal Air Force's Mosquito Squadron gears up to destroy the site, but its leader, Quint Monroe (McCallum), becomes conflicted when he discovers that the air strikemay kill hundreds of British POWsincluding the squad's former commander!
Customer Reviews:
Not as good as I remember.......2007-04-06
Hey, I was six years old and this was the best movie I had ever seen on the big screen. So at 43 my tastes have changed a bit and the movie, although still cool, was not as spectacular as I remember. I know I know, you can never go home again can you....
A poor rehash.......2007-01-09
I've seen these scenes in so many different movies that I got bored and
turned it off. It was just a poor copy of other good movies. (Like 633 squadron).
No, No, No, No!!!.......2006-11-27
I don't care what others may say about the capabilities of the director, producer, cast, cinematographer...nothing, and I mean NOTHING is capable of redeeming this sappy production. The scenes utilizing miniature buildings look like they should be under a Christmas tree, with the only good aspect of the film being the flying scenes borrowed from 633 Squadron. David McCallum is an expressionless bore, while the action scenes of the special bombs look more like elderly lawn bowling. Oh no! Look out Dave! When you bank your plane right your left wing is missing! Studio oversight or did they just figure we're all dumb enough not to notice?
I give it 2 stars instead of one only because of the fact the story actually involves the Barnes Wallis designed Hi Ball weapons that were an off-shoot of the bouncing bombs he designed for the Dam Busters, even though they were to be used on water. Laughable at best...skip it.
Great DVD of a Poor Movie.......2006-02-21
CONCERNING THE DVD:
Yet another MGM quickie, containing the film in its correct 1.66:1 aspect ratio with some nicely restored video elements. The footage from other films that was edited in looks poor. The 2.0 Mono soundtrack is in good shape. There are basic subtitles in French and Spanish, scene selections as well as a beat-up trailer.
CONCERNING THE FILM: (from my website, www.angelfire.com/film/eurowar)
The always-overrated David McCallum is one of the few good things in this low-budget World War II adventure piece, yet another quickie from Oakmont Films.
Sometime prior to D-Day - probably early '44 or '43 - a Mosquito Squadron is sent to bomb a V-1 rocket installation in France, when Squadron Leader Scott (David Buck) is shot down and presumed dead. His second-in-command, Quint Munroe (who just happens to be like a life-long brother to him) has to return to England and tell his beautiful blonde wife (Suzanne Neve) the sad news. As one would expect, Munroe and Mrs. Scott slowly fall in love. But when Munroe is chosen to lead a mission to bomb a new V-3 development center, things will chance quite a bit - because Scott is a prisoner held at the target fortress!
From start to finish, "Mosquito Squadron" is a total hack-job - literally. The story is filled with enough contrivances and clichés to drive any mildly serious critic mad. Let us take a brief look at a 1964 film entitled "633 Squadron". In said film, a squadron commander has a best friend shot down over Norway, and falls in love with his sister. Later on, he is assigned to bomb the fortress where his friend is being held. Sound familiar? And that's not all our title film steals! Virtually all of the aerial battle footage is directly lifted from "633 Squadron", while the new footage is comprised almost entirely of horrible-looking miniatures hanging from far-too-visible wires.
The writers have also directly copied another classic war film, "The Dam Busters". The feasibility of Munroe's mission revolves around a bouncing bomb, which will skip along the ground and roll into an open tunnel leading to the V-3 rockets. (I won't even mention how convenient it was to leave a big open tunnel to drop a bomb into). The real bouncing bomb (made famous in 1954's "The Dam Busters") was designed to skip on water to destroy Nazi dams - not the ground as is seen here! The idea of dropping a bouncing bomb on the ground is, simply, ludicrous and impossible. Introduction of this concept kills the storyline immediately.
The low budget shows up in every action sequence: the French resistance force is comprised of a half-dozen men in berets carrying Sten guns, and only a handful of German guards enforce security at the "fortress". The forests are obviously cheaply furnished soundstages, and a face-off with an imitation German "tank" is ludicrously shot. We never really see much of the German-held Chateau, and when we do it never looks as though we're inside some high-tech development center a la "Operation Crossbow". The scenes set in England fare somewhat better, with some excellent scenes set at airfields and a rather rowdy officer's club.
David McCallum and the cast of little-known English actors do a fair job, even though the no-frills script doesn't give them much to do. McCallum is a fair actor, nowhere near as great as his fans hail him to be, though. He was better suited for television than cinema, and that comes out in every scene. He often looks uncomfortable and awkward, but delivers his often banal dialog convincingly and with conviction. His scenes with Neve are often touching, even though audiences have seen this dozens of times before. There aren't any other actors worth mention among the ensemble, besides perhaps Charles Gray who would go on to play Blofeld in the James Bond film "Diamonds are Forever" a few years later.
Oakmont Productions financed a number of cheap British war films in the late 1960s and early 1970s: "Attack on the Iron Coast", "Hell Boats", "The Last Escape" and "The One Thousand Plane Raid" among them. These quickies were best suited for TV viewing instead of theatrical release, but United Artists picked them all up and put them on the big screen. Anyone expecting a classic here - or in any of the aforementioned pieces for that matter - is in for a big disappointment. Check out "633 Squadron" instead.
I Need To Learn To Read The Reviews First!.......2006-01-01
I bought this on the fly (no pun intended)at a local store, then watched it , then ran to Amazon.com to read the reviews. Yup, it's all been said before. This is a clone of 633 Squadron, even down to the plane crash and the hook-handed pilot.
The two-pilots-love-same-woman reminded me of Pearl Harbor.
Still, some good acting and good flying footage. Worth a view if you can buy it cheap.

grade-z, but strangely compelling.......2007-06-06
when this was shown on SciFi it was titled "Mansquito". I don't know why they changed the title.
undoubtedly you've seen the previews on sci-fi which show the sexy scientist tearing off her blouse-- that and the [original]title tell you all you need to know about how cheesy and ridiculous this picture is-- but I hate to admit I found it strangely watchable. Corin Nemec plays a positively Beowulfian cop who tussles repeatedly with the mansquito but somehow survives each time, while(numerous) lesser men and women die within a few tenths of a second of their 'squito encounters. The story hurtles forward at a breathless pace, which is undoubtedly a good thing considering how silly it is. The heroine is also infected by radioactive skeeter juice(hence her need to disrobe(?), and she figures out that Only She can lure Mansquito to his doom...and you can probably guess the rest.
Look: obviously no one watches a teevee movie called "Mansquito!"(it needed an exclamation point, don't you think?) expecting King Lear, unless they have neurological problems or something. Mansquito! is the cinematic equivalent of cheese nachos: you hate to admit you occasionally crave because you know they're nutritional gargbage-- good in a bad way.
And gee, I didn't know mosquitos could growl-- did you?
Tibor Takacs strikes again........2006-06-29
Mansquito (Tibor Takacs, 2005)
Corin Nemec first made a real impression in Hollywood as the male lead in the excellent, short-lived, highly underrated early-nineties sitcom Parker Lewis Can't Lose. With the exception of a role in the Mick Garris-helmed miniseries The Stand (in which he was woefully miscast and still managed to do an excellent job with the role), it's been all downhill from there.
Mansquito may be the nadir of Nemec's career. (His next flick puts him opposite the excellent, similarly underrated Ken Foree, so there's hope the long journey back into the light begins now.) Directed by Tibor Takacs, a man who has directed so many intended-for-theatrical-release-and-laughed-out-of-the-distribution-company-only-to-be-picked-up-by-the-Sci-Fi-Channel films it's amazing, Mansquito is the story of a (gorgeous, naturally) scientist (Musetta Vander [recently seen in O, Brother, Where Art Thou? for a very short time, turning John Turturro into a toad]) and her boyfriend (Nemec) the cop (because gorgeous research scientists have the time to have social lives, especially with cops, who work hours as long as theirs). The scientist is working for a company looking for a cure for the West Nile virus by genetically altering mosquitoes. There is the inevitable explosion, and the quickly-following Genetic Tampering Is Bad theme writ large, as a convict who's volunteered for human testing is exposed to radiation and, presumably, a large rain of disembodied mosquito parts, which turn him into, yes, the title character, who then goes around sucking peoples' blood and being hunted by said scientist and said cop. Takacs works with some of his favorite actors here, and they can't act any better than they ever could (Vander, especially, is not destined to get a lead role ever again, unless it comes from Takacs).
So you've got a plot thin enough that it's nonexistent, really bad acting, a script so awful it practically bleeds (let me rephrase an earlier statement: the nadir of Cory Nemec's career comes with the line "HEY, MANSQUITO!"). What could there possibly be worth watching about this dog? Well, it has the automatic train-wreck appeal: it's so bad you can't stop watching. But it also has, despite its silliness, an innate sense of pace. I grant you, there is no tension whatsoever to be built here, unless you're playing a drinking game that involves cast members spouting cliches. But if there were tension to be built here, the structure of the film allows that it might have actually happened. It's a surprisingly fast two hours. Though, granted, it's still two hours of your life that you will never get back.
Oh, and no mosquitoes were harmed in the writing of this review. Not surprising, since it's early March, and I'm in Cleveland. *
Worthy of a showing or two.......2006-02-14
Mosquito man was a average movie but with a great mosquito costume.
99% of the mosquito man scenes are great, and only 1 scene where you
the mosquito costume revealed too much.
Now if they would have invested in a better script this movie could
have been a 4 star movie.
The non-action scenes because of boring ' deja vu stuff' almost kills this movie...i dont know who to blame ...the actors or the
direction. Also the music was not too bad,, but better music might
have brought this film to a 3.5.
There is enough gore for the horror fan to enjoy.
WHAT'S THE BUZZ.......2005-10-09
Yes, you can tell the mosquito man costume is a man in a suit most of the time, but this movie harkens back to the days of the paranoid fifties when everyone was terrified at what nuclear war could do. This time, the ever popular theme of messing with mother nature is given a new twist in MOSQUITO MAN. The victim this time is a nasty serial killer who has been brought to a laboratory to test out a new breed of skeeters that might help lower the casualties in a new virus propagated by mosquitos that is 100 times worse than the Nile virus. He makes an escape attempt, however, and in the process is infected with the DNA of these mosquitoes and turns into a nasty mosquito man. Cheesy, indeed, but its obvious homage to those bug movies of the fifties is appreciated by one of those fans of that era. Corin Nemec and the rest of the cast of relative unknowns do a fairly decent job and some of the scenes have a tense ambience that makes this above average.
Nothing New.......2005-07-31
Pretty much a retread of numerous low budget horror flicks--the kind you used to see at drive-ins. The acting is pretty poor, the story line is worse, the interest factor is almost non existent. To top it all off the description on the dvd cover is almost totally wrong--making me think either the person who wrote it 1. Didn't actually watch it or 2. Was so bored they forgot what they watched or 3. Figured nobody would actually notice
Examples-"His lab is invaded by criminals intent on stealing a new vaccine"--actually one criminal who is supposedly a research volunteer is brought to the lab-where he manages to escape.
"When Bowman's attackers inject him with the experimental serum they unleash a horrifying transformation"--not quite right, while escaping the criminal causes an explosion which transforms himself into the mosquito man.
I'd have to recommend avoiding this clunker--unless you're in a mood for some Ed Wood type entertainment (not nearly as funny though)

Must...resist...sucking joke..........2005-04-26
Hi folks. Take a look at the front cover of the box. See that? Evil mosquito face, teeth gnashing, drool dripping with every anticipation for it's next victim. Looks really cool, right? Makes ya wanna go out and see the movie, right? But here's what you should do: go to the rental store. Pick up the videotape box. Look the front over. Put it back down. Walk out. You've had a better experience than I did watching the film.
The mosquitos in here are really mosquito biology models increased to the size of your hand. They kill people by attaching themselves to low paid actors, thanks to the help of wire and the hands of studio gaffers. The mosquitos are created by radiation (oh wow, there's a twist) dumped by a corporate villain. (oh wow, yet another twist) The corporation subplot is odd as it's never fully resolved - making the whole thing weird. The corporate villain cavorts around talking like Tony Jay and looking like the "Phantasm" Tall Man's little brother. He also sends his minions after our heroes, resulting in a few gunfights. It's almost like the movie forgot it was a horror film and tried to be a John Woo film instead.
This movie stars Charles Napier as a police officer (again) and William Sanderson, who was famous as J.H. Sebastian in "Blade Runner" and Joe Monday the bartender in "Last Man Standing." Oh yes and a whole load of mosquitos. Contains gun-fu, kung-fu, Indian-fu, and moquito-fu. Two stars. TrezKu13 says don't check it out.
If you see just one giant mosquito movie then skip "Skeeter".......2003-06-28
If you see just one giant mosquito B-movie this summer then go see "Mosquito." That 1995 film is above average low-budget camp, as oxymoronic as that sounds. But the "1994" film "Skeeter" is just plain bad, without the redeeming quality of unintentional humor (the script is actually better in this film, but with the bad special effects it works against your enjoyment). This time around, instead of the skeeters feasting on alien blood they end up being mutated because of a toxic waste dump. Meanwhile, at our isolated desert town cattle showing up drained of all their blood through giant puncture wounds. Then a pair of sex starved teenagers disappeared, followed by the people looking for the aforementioned teenagers. The first people in town to spot the monsters are drunks, so they do not count and the locals have no clue until they are buzzed by mosquitoes the size of birds ("big" is a relative term in monster movies, and since we are talking swarms of mosquitoes, this size works better).
The hero is Roy Boone (Jim Youngs), a strapping lad who likes to work with his shirt off, and the damsel in distress is his once and future girl friend Sarah Crosby (Tracy Griffith). The local rich jerk Drake (Jay Robinson), is involved in land grabbing and his land has the toxic spill that leads to the mutated mosquitoes. Charles Napier plays the corrupt local sheriff, and William Sanderson is the perplexed county examiner, and Michael J. Pollard's character keeps one of the skeeters as a pet. All of your favorite conventions are here, the point of view shot from the perspective of the giant insects, the brutal deaths of the bad guys, and screams from the healthy lungs of the heroine. It is just that "Skeeter" is not bad enough to be enough fun. Do "Skeeter" as a late night double-bill with "Mosquito" and you will have to argee this is the lesser of two giant mosquitoes B-movies.
It's a bloody brilliant movie.......1999-03-09

~Mosquito~.......2006-07-09
Although I gave this movie a rating of two stars, do not let that fool you. I found this horror movie enjoyable and hillarious at times and a good movie to watch with my friends and family. Especially during Halloween parties. We decorated our home with the theme of this movie {tents, camping equipment and mosquitoes of course} and had a fanastic time. Hands down, this movie should be in the hall of fame for great movies! I am disappointed about the price of this movie, however, I have not been able to find it for sale, but $74.00 on Amazon is way too much for the movie itself. When you are ready to wipe the dust off, and come down on your price, I imagine you would not be able to keep this movie in stock. :)
Blast from my past........2005-11-13
This was a movie I used to watch every time I saw it on T.V. when I was a kid, of about 12 or 13. I enjoyed it, as it was probably the first horror movie I watched that was COMPLETELY UNFRIGHTENING TO ME. I was a notorious wuss when it came to horror films, and that's what my friends were into. So, I was always having nightmares. However, this was a movie I could watch that wasn't scary at all! And still look cool to my friends. This sloppily put together, cheap looking movie also helped fuel my love affair for awful horror movies. So for that, it has immense sentimental value. For that alone, it gets 5 stars.
But I must balance this rating with the fact that this isn't a good movie. It's awful! It's not really very watchable, for the most part. I'm watching it on T.V. as I write this, and it gives me a warm feeling inside, but I'm not exactly "loving" it. My girlfriend is doing homework rather than watch it! On a realistic scale, the movie gets 2 stars.
However, for two truly bizarre people staring in it, it gains an extra star. Though it might not mean a lot to people to some people, the fat, whiny park Ranger Parks (groan) is actually the GUITARIST FOR INFAMOUS PROTO PUNK BAND THE STOOGES!!!!! This might not mean a lot of people, but it's a truly mind bogglingly strange thing for me to deal with, ten years after the fact. This man could make the claim, quite legitimately, that he created punk rock. And here he is, running away from mosquito's and mincing his way through a role he has no right staring in; he even WROTE A SONG FOR THE SOUNDTRACK. For rock fans, this gives the movie an extra star.
However, for horror movie fans, an even odder casting was the choice of Gunner Hansen as the big fat redneck. Though this name won't ring bells to many people, this is the man who was Leatherface in Texas Chainsaw Massacre! Here is a man who could lay claim, quite legitmately, to starting the "slasher" horror film fad. Seeing him here is surreal; I keep expecting him to grunt and stick his toungue out. At the end, he even wields a chainsaw, saying "I haven't used one of these in 20 years." Heh, heh. This is worth an extra star for horror film fans.
So, for most people this movie is a two star deal. For rock or horror, it's three stars affair. For rock AND horror fans it's four stars. But for ME seeing as it has the "sentimental" value, it gets five stars. I will buy this on DVD as soon as I can find it.
Great 'b' movie.......2005-09-25
I really enjoyed this flic about mosquitos sucking alien blood and growing to the size of turkeys.
The bugs themselves were excellent, especially the cgi ones flying in a pack.
The story and acting reminded me a bit of the quality of an Evil Dead movie which really made me happy cause i love those.
I got a kick out of the 'bad guys' always calling the girl ranger's b.f 'pretty boy'.
I'd love to buy this movie but i've never seen it for sale, only for rent in a single video store in my town.
Excellent cult film.
Great Movie.......2005-03-14
I do not own Mosquito but I have seen it on TV and as much people think that it is a stupid movie on the other hand I think its very good. It has some good action parts. Its an old movie. 1994 but I would like to see if I get a copy on VHS or DVD. Thanks.
Huge Mosquitos vs. Leatherface.....yeah baby.......2005-03-13
A group of people band and form together to stay alive from huge mutated mosquitoes which if they kill you, you radiate radiation. They join forces in a farmhouse and board it up and get ready to face down these hilariously looking mosquitos. Must of had guys on the sides holding up those suckers on wires, I guess. It all rolls up to a final bug squatting showdown with a big bang or no wait, that was my head hitting the wall because I was trying to get my brain started. A big critter movie with people banning together in a home, just like Duane Jones and company did in the original Night OF The Living Dead although these people are running away from huge mosquitos. Among the group is Gunnar Hansen (Leatherface from the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre) who wields a, yes, you guessed it, a chainsaw and he revs it up slicing and dicing these blood humpers to kibbles and bits. Act people!

During WWII: one airplane was equally at home at 30:000 feet on a reconnaissance mission as it was skimming over treetops while taking the fight to the enemy. With a speed of over 400 mph: the Mosquito was so fast and maneuverable that Germany awarded pilots two kills if they shot one down. Powered by two Rolls Royce Merlin engines: its revolutionary leap of design had no armor: no weapons: could carry the same bomb load as a B-17: and was built entirely of wood! By war's end: over 40 versions of this amazing aircraft were in use. Fly into the heat of battle on one of these wooden wonders--from bombing Berlin to flying at 10 feet against Gestapo prisons; from night fighter against the Luftwaffe to pathfinder on D-Day.
