I hold my hands up and honestly say i love the Subspecies films,i love the authentisity,i love the atmosphere,i love Radu's long wobbly fingers and messy eating habits,yeah i love these films,cheap,oh so cheap but good.
Its such a shame the film images haven't been cleaned up or remastered at all,they have the look of old video tapes but not even that ruins their spell over me.
Where the Radu Subspecies movies are dirty,squalid (and lovely) the Vampire Chronicles episode is aiming for the oppulance of Interview With A Vampire, it almost hits the mark as well,it has a sumptious quality and style that is the other end of the spectrum to the Radu films but they meet perfectly.
If you're a Goth (like me) if you like vampires (like me) then sink your teeth into this boxset,worth every penny (though the outer box is flimsy)

ok i will make this quick and painless. I Loved these films and others *like puppetmaster* but these were favorites, but alas seemed impossible to find a good set since the 1 ed set was poorly packaged and had terrible glitches well im Pleased to announce this shiny New Set that i will summerize:

theres good attension to detail in this movie in particular watch during the swordfight *you will see something you never see that would be natural in battle with a sword* **Spoiler Warning** yes indeed while his oponent is down he swings his Sword at His Legs! attension to details like this catch my keen eye! also swords bending and chipping also good detail! the "subspecies" demons were a great idea but sadly the effects were subpar at the time hence they look badly dated and poorly done.

its a great vampire flick slightly dinked by a few graphical problems that you really wouldnt notice unless you were Looking Specificly For Them. 3 star due to probs otherwise a definate 4 star if you can overlook this new editions flaws.

Still a great vampire flick anyone who loves vampires etc and needs something different to see, well this is it! all kinds of vamps from zombie type and nosferatu *radu* type also even some anne rice types *see 1st movie* Uber for any Major Vampire Fanatic.

I just received my copies of these fabulous movies, and I am quite pleased. I bought the 1998 redistribution of this box set, and it appears that the video transfer is better than the original DVD box set. I have only watched one of the DVDs so far, but I am very happy with what I saw. Sure, in the beginning of Subspecies 1, there is some minor oddities in the video, but the simple fact that these awesome movies are on DVD more than makes up for it.
I was beginning to think I would have to make copies of my VHS version in order to ensure that I would always have a copy of these movies. It would have been a shame if these movies would have been lost due to no transfer to modern media.

Is it Really a Great Set?.......2007-02-28

I must say that I am a newcomer to this series, and I have only watched 2 of the DVDs.

Subspecies - The picture quality isnt wonderful and it's certainally not digital. It actually resembles that of a new VHS. The videozone is not in it's entirety either, it only has the behind the scenes segment.

Bloodstone: Subspecies II - The quality is wonderful in all but 2 scenes. In the scenes that involve the Romanian historian, the picture gets while spots that jitters throughout the whole scene.

This is a wonderful DVD Box Set released onto DVD by Kangaroo Entertainment along with Full Moon. Each one of the five DVD's comes in its very own DVD case with Highly Detailed DVD cover packaging. Special features are very pore on the DVDs. From what I have see. They only come with there original video zones and a mini trailer in the beginning advertising their website and also for their "Puppet Master" toys that are way out of print.

Picture and audio quality is Great. Full Moon and Kangaroo Entertainment really did a great job on this Five Disc DVD Set. This is a must have for any Full Moon and gothic Horror fans.

If that isn't enough of a title, it's also subtitled "The Master's Revenge." The old master is Radu Vladislas, the same bloodsucker from the other Subspecies movies. Michelle (Denise Duff) is back once more as well, although her sister gets knocked off unceremoniously in the first few minutes. It's impossible not to warm a little to a film that has the line, "So what brings you to Bucharest, master?" and this film doesn't mess around delivering what its audience wants. That means blood, lots of blood, and everybody talks with their mouths full. Vampires can't seem to wipe their chins, but they sure are plucky. Filmmakers pretty much expect that you've seen the first three films. The DVD also has a cheapo video release update, showing off the latest Blood Dolls and Puppet Master films, as well as a "making of" for this film. Hope this doesn't disappoint, but there is no actual storm of blood. Tsk, tsk, what a shame. --Keith Simanton

Great Series.......2004-05-01

I like collecting DVDs of movies I liked as a kid,for nostalgia, and I was really into full moon movies. The Puppet Master series, Dollman, Demonic toys, Pit & The Pendulum, Trancers Crash and Burn and Subspecies. Most of these DVDs are hard to find. For those that don't know a few years ago Full Moon sold their DVD rights to Paramount to market their movies. But Koch video released many official Full Moon movies on DVD illegally causing a big fall out between Full Moon and Paramount. The original Subspecies is available on DVD (other movies released were Puppet Master I and II, Puppet Master boxed set, Crash and Burn, Pit & Pendulum and Demonic Toys. These are rare, expensive and hard to find but very possible. Subspecies I is available on Amazon for 199.99...a little much.)
Anyways I am still quite surprised at how much I enjoy them. There is really nothing to say about Bloodstorm that other reviewers haven't. If you are a fan of the series then by all means buy it. This brings some closure to the series but its very necessary to see the other 3 movies first.
This DVD comes with the usual Full Moon VideoZone. There are two commentary tracks provided by Director Ted Nicolau and Denise Duff. Mr. Nicolau's commentary is excellent. He provides with all the intricate technical problems and enhancements that had to go into this movie. Denise Duff's commentary is very humorous.

Why aren't Subspecies 1,2 & 3 on DVD!!.......2003-11-04

The Subspecies series is one of the best vampire saga's out there. Though they are low budget, they use their budget well and they have wonderful gothic atmospheres. What makes me mad is that only Subspecies 4 is on DVD! You cannot have one Subspecies movie without the others; they are all connected like one big long movie. The VHS versions of Subspecies 1-3 are even out-of-print, so there is no way to get the entire series anymore! This is terrible for fans just getting into the series and as a result they are forced to purchase bootlegged copies. What makes me wonder is if they will ever release the others again because Full Moon pictures has just folded and has gone out of business. This is a scary thought indeed. Lets just hope that someday, the first three gems will be re-released.

Great End To A Great Series!.......2003-10-30

This movie is one of the few horror sequels that I can honestly say is a great film. The atmosphere of the movie is morbid. the acting is surperb. Followed up with a good plot line. A must see movie for Vampire fans, in which Radu is back again to reclaim his "fledging" Michelle who he turned into a vampire in the 1st film of the series. In the same time Michelle has been trying to rid herself of Radu himself. With the "bloodstone" in the middle of the fight. This is the final chapter of a 4 part series of movies about the doom of the vampire Radu. A definate movie to watch over and over again.

Bloodstorm rocks!!!.......2002-10-17

After four movies(each better than the one before it), I hate to see it all end. I got quite attached to the characters myself. But, oh well. Everything has to end sometime, eh?
Anyways, all I can say about this one is it's a brilliant movie. Anders Hove and Denise Duff did an awesome job as they reprised their roles for this movie. Too bad, it took some time for this one to come out as a followup to the others yet I'm glad to see it done. If any Vampire movies were true to the folklore, the Subspecies series has been it. The movies just drip with Gothicness. If you wanna see a cool Vampire movie, check this one out. In fact, check the whole series out. You'll be glad you did.
Trust me.

Are We Done With the Vampire, Radu?.......2002-08-02

The fourth installment of the Subspecies series is a wrap up of the series, or at least this particular story line in the series. We once again see the vampire Radu trying to control his "fledgling" Michelle and Michelle trying to find her way to freedom from her "master". The series still views like a comic-book come to life but like a comic-book you keep buying the next in the series. In this episode new vampires are introduced . . . who live a life that bears a striking resemblance to Anne Rice's "Theater of the Vampires" that was depicted in her first novel Interview With the Vampire. In the finale of "Bloodstorm" we learn what both Michelle and Radu's fate will be. I'd recommend this or any of the Subspecies films for diehard fans only.

I will admit that I am a fan of early Full Moon films. I grew up renting and buying those low-budget wonders like Dollman, Oblivion, Puppet Master, and Subspecies. These films will always hold a special place in my black heart. I however am sick and tired of reading reviews of this box set by "fan boys" stating such worthless babble as "this series rocks! Get the DVD set now".

Being a fan of early Full Moon pictures (I'm sorry, but their new material royally sucks) I was eagerly awaiting DVD releases of their classic films. Knowing Full Moons legal battle with Paramount Pictures (Full Moon's old distributor), I never thought I would see the day these films would come out on DVD. Thankfully Charlie Band (head of Full Moon) found a way to bring the films to DVD for fans "legally" as so-called "Australian Imports" (for more information on that please check out my review of the Dollman / Demonic Toys box set).

When I heard Full Moon was going to be releasing many of their classic films on DVD and that a Subspecies box set was going to be their first release, I quickly pre-ordered the item. After receiving it I was shocked by how shoddy the packing was. Literally all 5 discs were CRAMMED into a small chubby keep case. Subspecies II,III,IV, and Vampire Journals were packedged in the "stacked" position in the case in which one disc overlaps another. I hate when companies release discs like this because it's a better chance of scratching the discs. Sure enough my Subspecies IV disc came pre-scratched. The cover of the set was also extremely terrible and looks like someone took only a few minutes to cook up in photo-shop. The set literally looked like a bargain bin "5 movies for 5 bucks" deal instead of a $70 collection.

However the packing was not the worst part of the set. The first thing that many fans will be upset over is the picture quality. Subspecies I,II,and III are obviously VHS rips. Laserdiscs tend to have a hair better quality then VHS but you can tell they are VHS rips because of "white lines" that pop up every so often and the soft picture. They however are still very watchable and there are no signs of compression or digital artifacts. Ironically the movie with the WORST transfer is Subspecies IV. This film suffers from horrible compression and digital artifacts, especially the dark scenes. I was shocked at the picture quality of this entry as it is not that old of a film. It would have probably looked better if they did do a VHS rip! I however never liked Subspecies IV as it was made when Full Moon was having some financial problems. The whole film has a bad cheap feel and the opening computized credits just scream BAD. The film seems only to be made in order to generate some more revenue for the failing Full Moon Pictures company. I can live with the horrible transfer because I never plan to watch that dismal sequel again. Vampire Journals is the same decent transfer as its original DVD release

Again, the transfers still aren't the worst part. The worst part are the glitches. The Subspecies I,II, and IV dics have TERRIBLE audio and video glitches. After watching the films I was ready to just huck the set in the garbage. I however calmed down and decided sit down and email Full Moon Entertainment. After a month of emailing and getting no response, I decided to go online where I talked to other people with the same problem and I was able to get a phone number to Full Moon/Wizard Entertainment's customer service. They said all the Subspecies box sets have the defects but they repressed the discs and will send me replacements. The replacements came and they play perfectly.

I thought about giving the box set a 2 rating but due to the shoddy packaging, the watchable yet disappointing VHS transfers of Parts I,II,and III, the terrible transfer of Part IV, and crappy glitches, I'm going to give this set a 1 star rating. Some people are going to say "suck it up, just be glad they are on DVD" but dang it, when I pay $70 I expect a quality product and this ain't it. It is actually the worst DVD box set/collection I have ever purchased. Full Moon used to always offer quality products but lately they have taken a nose dive just like their films. For a struggling company they should start treating their fans better. I swore I would never by a Full Moon DVD again but I tried the Dollman / Demonic Toys Box Set and it is FAR better.

Again, please remember that all the box sets have glitches. Full Moon is offering replacement dics but they are a hassle to get. Some sellers have already gotten the replacement discs and offer the set "new" but opened. I only recommend getting this set if you own the films on VHS because tapes can easily be ruined. If you have the films on laserdisc then don't bother.

UPDATE: I have been informed by friends that Full Moon has redone the box set. This new set (often referred to as 'Version 2') has all the glitches fixed on the discs and all 5 films come in seperate DVD cases with seperate artwork. Having the glitches fixed and seperate DVD cases is of course a betterment on the original release but Subspecies 1-3 have the same VHS rips and Subspecies 4 still has a crappy transfer. This new version of the box set would garner a 2 star rating from me

Subspecies...Not the Best Horror Movie, But Definitely Unique.......2006-03-10

Although this isn't the greatest, or even one of the best-made horror films, it has a certain novelty that one can't deny. Because of this, "Subspecies" is one of my favorite horror flics. True vampire fans need to watch this if they want to see a plot that diverges from Anne Rice's sleek, and extremely attractive depiction of vampire men and women. Of course, this is not at all to say that "Interview With the Vampire," in conjunction with any of Anne Rice's vampire novels aren't any good. In fact, they're also some of my favorites.

Since a well-outlined synopsis of the film has already been given by several raters, I won't go into any summaries. The main character/bad guy Radu (played by European actor Anders Hove) is true to the original "Nosferatu" genre. He is creepy, irascible, and even a bit pitiable as the sequels to this film point out.

What I like about this film is the introduction of the Bloodstone, a mythical relic that is known to drip the blood of the saints. The Bloodstone is a family heirloom that originally belongs to Radu's father, the king of the vampires (played by "Phantasm's" Angus Scrimm). The movie starts off with Radu murdering his father and taking the Bloodstone by force.

Another unique characteristic of the movie and its sequels is Radu's use of "shadow flying." Radu is able to use this technique to go/move anywhere through the shadows. He also is able to sort of mutate and reproduce tiny "subspecies" versions of himself. Despite the film's low budget, along with the fact that the actual subspecie demons look very superficial, the actors do an incredible job. Finally, the film is shot in Romania/Transylvania within a real castle along with several ancient ruins. Thus, "Subspecies" is a must-see for real vampire lovers due to its originality and inherently unique qualities.

IS A VAMPIRE GOD!!! Radu Vladislas is quite possibly the best (if not really the neatest eater) vampire character I have seen in a long time. My husband and I have searched high and low for the Subspecies movies with little to no luck. So far we have only been able to locate #4. LET THERE BE A BLOODBATH!!!

You can purchase the DVD for 1 and 2 in Spanish versions for 20 bucks each. There is an option to turn off the spanish subtitles, so you get the english language version on DVD and don't have to pay a fortune for a sucky (pun intended) VHS copy that some creep is charging $150.00 for.

Now go get your SUBSPECIES! You bloodsuckers!

Low budget...great movie!.......2004-09-02

I won't go into the storyline because that's been sufficiently outlined by other reviewers, but I will say that this is a fun and interesting little vampire flick. I'm actually surprised and disappointed that it's not more available on DVD, and I wonder if the studio has any plans to perhaps turn the Subspecies series into a 4-disc boxed set of some sort? The setting is great, and as long as you suspend disbelief and realize this is a product of the early 90s, it's a great movie to watch with a bowl of popcorn and a good drink.
