Customer Reviews:
A Blast from my past........2007-06-05
I first saw these serials in the movie theatres in the 1940's. They were part of the magical joy of a child's early life, which brought us back to that same theatre every Saturday matinee until we had seen all the episodes. In those days one could see a triple feature, the Flash Gordon serial, and cartoons for 9 cents at the Old Loma Theatre in Burbank, California.
Later, in the early 1950's they appeared on television for the first time. Even the adults were part of the audience. Crude as those early special effects were, they just delighted my whole generation.
Now, all three of the serials are available for a huge savings on DVD, about the same price for one individual movie. Step back into time and relive another era, sadly gone forever.
Flashing on Memory.......2007-05-19
Those of us who grew up in the 1950s, first saw most of these episodes on TV. Originally designed as weekly serials in the 1930s to be shown in theatres before the main feature, they were among our earliest entrees into the genre of science fiction and fantasy films. Still showing on TV into the 1970s, they suddenly vanished from view thereafter and are only now available in their entirety on DVD. Seeing them again is a revelation on more than one level. It never occurred to us as kids just how overacted was Buster Crabbe's portrayal of Flash Gordon, and it's a hoot to witness now. There's more unintentional humor than anything else in these volumes, but you'll also see images your brain has forgotten and you'll howl at the "flash" backs. The impossibly goofy spaceships, the gila monster lizard dragons, The Emperor Ming, Professor Zarkov, Prince Baron, the great sexless Dale, and all the gang are here. If you've got kids, they'll laugh along with you and wonder how a generation could be so entranced by such phony yet entertaining technology, back before there was any real technology to speak of. By the time you get to the 3rd DVD, the similar plotlines (what plotlines there are) begin to grow tired. But you can always pull this stuff out again for a good laugh and a warm stroll down memory lane. Note: Obviously, Steven Spielberg was well acquainted with these serials and you'll enjoy seeing his inspiration for the initial Star Wars movie on DVD 2 here.
Youth Revisited.......2007-05-12
As a youth I used to go to movies on Saturday to see the Flash Gordon episodes. Those were the days (1930s) when they gave away free dishes to attract the more mature crowd. The quality of these DVDs is very good and I have enjoyed seeing Flash and Ming and the rest of the crowd again.

exactly as I remembered from my youth - a local channel used to play these serialised shows on friday nights
decent transfer and sound quality.
I am happy with it.
Classic Sci-Fi Serials!.......2007-02-16
Flash Gordon is a superhero in his own right. Created for Alex Raymond's 1934-1945 Sunday comic strip, Gordon is an all-American hero, who travels to the alien planet Mongo with the lovely Dale Arden and brilliant scientist, Dr. Hans Zarkov. On the strange planet, the three Earthlings encounter savage monsters, and Ming the Merciless--the most cruel dictator in the Universe.
The first of the serials--"Flash Gordon" (1936)--is the best. This continuity does Raymond's original vision a great justice. The first two years of the strip are roughly chronicled here, with innovations (what they are I won't tell you, because they occur at the end). If read Checker Books' first Flash Gordon volume, then you basically have a novelization of this serial. Buster Crabbe, Jean Rogers, Frank Shannon, Charles Middleton, Priscilla Lawson and John Lipson star.
"Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars" (1938) pick up right where the first serial left off. In order to save Earth from the diabolical plans of Ming and witch-queen, Azura, Flash and company must ally themselves with the Clay People of Mars. Crabbe, Rogers, Shannon and Middleton.
Buster Crabbe, Frank Shannon and Charles Middleton were reunited in the final chapter of the Flash trilogy, "Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe" (1940). Though this is the weakest of the series (barely any monsters, weak acting, and overused plot), there is a note of finality as the ruthless Ming defiantly declares, "I am the Universe!"
Of all the serials I have seen, Universal's Flash Gordons are the best. One of the things I admire the most about all of the Gordon serials are that you never see any strings or anything in all the rocket ship scenes. Even in "Batman," (1943) strings were evident in the plane used in one of the chapters. B-movie serials, yet great period quality invested in them.

Description
Weird! Wild! Wood! The most legendary B-movie director of all time, Edward D. Wood, Jr. assaulted audiences worldwide with a string of bizarre, no-budget fusions of horror, science fiction, noir and comedy. Now his oddball legacy is finally collected in one indispensable box set! Feast your eyes on his first feature, the madcap Glen or Glenda? in which Eddie himself portrays a transvestite struggling with his addiction to angora while Bela Lugosi offers inscrutable narration. Blackmail, outlaws on the run, and plastic surgery collide in the surreal crime drama Jail Bait, featuring a young Steve Reeves (Hercules), while Bela returns to create the Bride of the Monster in a heady collision of atomic experiments, a rampaging octopus and clumsy assistant Lobo (played by wrestler Tor Johnson). Wood's indisputable disasterpiece, Plan 9 from Outer Space, offers pie-plate flying saucers, incompetent alien leaders, all-seeing psychic Criswell, goth favorite Vampira and a post-mortem appearance by Lugosi himself in his last film role. Then Lobo and a phony spiritualist usher in a Night of the Ghouls at a spooky marsh filled with shuffling undead and wailing ghosts. Finally, learn all about the man himself with The Haunted World of Ed Wood, a comprehensive disc packed with interviews, film clips, TV rarities and much more! It's enough to make you scream!

IN A NUTSHELL! GREAT SET! LONG LIVE BELA AND ED!.......2007-05-03
"This is an excellent box set and you get all of Ed Wood's films. The king of cheapy creepy's for sure. A must have for any cheese lover!" The box set features "Plan 9 From Outer Space" "An Ed Wood Classic! The film features Bela Lugosi in his final role, but for those of us who love Bela it's nice to see him go out wearing his Dracula's cape. Bela died before the film was finished and Wood's dentist?(who is at least a foot taller than Bela, keeping his face covered by the dracula cape in every scene)had to step in to complete the scenes." The whole box set is a gas!
Ed Wood \ Only for the Collector.......2007-01-09
Ed Wood was the worst film producer of all time. His film, "Plan 9 from Outer Space" has been given the title of "Worst Film Ever Made." Ed was a transvestite so he worn angora sweaters and other women's clothes, and you see this in some of the films.
Although many classic films have been reworked and are in pristine condition, what you see is what you get here. They were a hoot and terrible to begin with. There is in the box a DVD on Dolores Fuller and others of Wood's gang gathering for an Ed Wood Showing. How they all ended up being and looking like is so interesting. Dolores lived with Ed and finally got enough of him and moved on. She became a song writer and wrote some of Elvis' lesser known songs. And she still looks good!
I just loved this collection and got a laugh out of all of it. This is a collection only for those interested in early film making, and as part of film history.
Ed Wood: "He Tampered In God's Domain!".......2006-10-28
Edward D. Wood Jr. was born in 1924 in Poughkeepsie, New York; spent his youth torn between comic books, pulp fiction, and movie matinees; and after a World War II stint in the Marines landed in Hollywood with an itch to wear women's clothing, drink to excess, and make movies. The result was a series of remarkably atrocious low-budget movies of the "so bad its good" variety, and this inexpensive box set offers not only the best know titles but unexpected bonuses as well.
Filmed in 1953, GLEN OR GLENDA is Ed Wood's ode to the joys and tragedies of cross dressing, featuring Wood himself as the conflicted hero and Delores Fuller as the girlfriend who keeps wondering why her angora sweaters are stretched out of shape. The 1954 JAIL BAIT is a riff on teenagers gone bad and is often described as the best made of Wood's films--but the term "best made" is extremely comparative, to say the least. The 1955 BRIDE OF THE MONSTER is the only Wood film that actually made back its cost; featuring a desperate Bela Lugosi, Tor Johnson, a rubber octopus, and a laboratory helmet that looks suspiciously like a collander, it is easily a Wood fan favorite. The 1959 NIGHT OF THE GHOULS is a kinda-sorta sequel, featuring Tor Johnson once again in a remarkably silly story of fraudulent spiritualists who bite off more ghosts than they can chew.
The most celebrated title, of course, is the 1959 PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, infamous as the film built around about five minutes of film Wood took of Bela Lugosi shortly before Lugosi's death. Fans have attempted to catalogue every error in the film, but it is inexhaustible: no matter how many goofs, mistakes, and disasters you notice, you always see one or two more with every viewing. Day turns to night and then to day--all in the same scene. Cars unexpectedly change year and model from cut to cut. Flying saucers cast shadows in outer space. The list is endless.
NIGHT OF THE GHOULS was never actually released during Wood's life time: he couldn't afford to pay the lab fees for a print of the film, and since the film was never issued the transfer is unexpectedly good. This is not the case with the other titles, all of which were pretty battered by the time video and DVD technology arrived on the scene--but this actually part of their charm. And the set includes an unexpected dollop of bonus material.
The big bonus here is THE HAUNTED WORLD OF ED WOOD JR, a 1996 documentary that intercuts various bits of Wood movies with archeival footage of Wood and his circle and interviews with those who knew him, including his leading ladies Delores Fuller, Mona McKinnon, Loretta King, and Vampira (aka Maila Syrjaniemi.) Perhaps the most interesting subject is Bela Lugosi Jr., who is extremely forthright in his opinion of Ed Wood as a cheapjack opportunist who hitched his wagon to a fading and desperate, not out of genuine affection for Bela Lugosi Sr. but to further his own ends. Coming in a close second in bonus material is SAUCERS OVER HOLLYWOOD: THE PLAN 9 COMPANION, which draws from many of the same sources as HAUNTED but which focuses on this specific film.
While it is true that the set does not include every scrap of Ed Wood material available--for a tenth rate director-writer-actor he was remarkably prolific, racking up fifty credits on such films as THE BRIDE AND THE BEAST and ORGY OF THE DEAD--it will hit the spot for all but the most diehard fan. Ed Wood will never appeal to a wide audience, but if you have the warped sense of humor required to appreciate his films, you'll find this set indispensible.

"15 Frightful Horror Films ... Bela Lugosi ... Passport Video".......2006-10-15
Passport Video presents "The Bela Lugosi Box - 15 Frightful Films" (1942) --- (Dolby digitally remastered) --- Béla Lugosi was the stage name of actor Béla Ferenc Dezs Blaskó (October 20, 1882 - August 16, 1956) --- Lugosi was born in Lugos, Hungary, at the time part of Austria-Hungary (now Lugoj, Romania), the youngest of four children of a baker --- best known for his portrayal of "Dracula" in the American Broadway stage production, and subsequent film, of Bram Stoker's classic vampire story.
Late in his life, he again received star billing in movies when filmmaker Edward D. Wood, Jr., a fan of Lugosi, found him living in obscurity and near-poverty and offered him roles in his films, such as "GLEN OR GLENDA?" (1953) (in which his role made no more sense than the rest of the movie) and as a Dr. Frankenstein-like mad scientist in "BRIDE OF THE MONSTER" (1955), during post-production of the latter, Lugosi entered treatment for his addiction, and the premier of the film was ostensibly intended to help pay for his treatment expenses. The extras on an early DVD release of "PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE" (1959) include an impromptu interview with Lugosi upon his exit from the treatment center, which provide some rare personal insights into the man --- this was one of Lugosi's most infamous roles was released after he was dead. Ed Wood (Director) features footage of Lugosi interspersed with a double --- Wood had taken a few minutes of silent footage of Lugosi, in his Dracula cape, for a planned vampire picture but was unable to find financing for the project --- Wood later conceived of Plan 9, Wood wrote the script to incorporate the Lugosi footage and hired his wife's chiropractor to double for Lugosi in additional shots --- notice however the "double" is thinner than Lugosi, and covers the lower half of his face with his cape in every shot --- Leonard Maltin (Famous Film Critic) was quoted - "Lugosi died during production, and it shows."
Lugosi died of a heart attack on August 16, 1956 while lying in bed in his Los Angeles home. He was 73 --- Bela Lugosi was buried wearing one of the many capes from the Dracula stageplay, as per the request of his son and fifth wife, in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California --- Contrary to popular belief, Lugosi never requested to be buried in his famous cloak; Bela Lugosi, Jr. has confirmed on numerous occasions that he and his mother, Lillian, arrived at their decision independently.
BIOS:
1. Bela Lugosi (aka: Béla Ferenc Dezsõ Blaskó)
Date of birth: 20 October 1882 - Lugos, Austria-Hungary. [now Lugoj, Romania]
Date of death: 16 August 1956 - Los Angeles, California
2. Edward D. Wood Jr. (Director, Writer and Producer)
Date of birth: 10 October 1924 - Poughkeepsie, New York
Date of death: 10 December 1978 - North Hollywood, California
This collection of "The Bela Lugosi Box - 15 Frightful Films" (1942) --- still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years --- but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten ... Plus the half-hour tribute "100 Years of Horror: Bela Lugosi", hosted by Christopher Lee --- and a great job by Passport Video for this release --- looking forward to more of the same from the '20s and '50s vintage...order your copy now from Amazon or Passport Video, stay tuned once again for more remarkable films from the vaults of classic television and Hollywood during the Golden Era of Entertaiment.

Ed Wood: the man and his mission!.......2006-09-18
Ed Wood? Yup, he's a genius... well sort of. I strongly agree with another reviewer who indicated that a film would need to lack any entertainment value at all to be labeled the worst film of all time. As far as this notion goes, Ed Wood didn't make bad films because every one of the five he made in the 1950's are loads of fun and laughs. 'Glen or Glenda' and 'Plan 9 from Outer Space' are likely my favorites. His first feature, about transvestism, is so inept and so incredibly strange, that one simply watches mesmerized at the audacity and enigmatic spirit Wood demonstrated as a filmmaker in the early 1950's. What can be said about 'Plan 9 from Outer Space,' except that every serious film buff and film maker should make this film priority viewing. The other three films directed by Ed Wood and featured in this box set are all worthy of attention because they're nearly as campy, inept, and hilarious as the other two I mentioned above. On the back of the case to 'Jail Bait,' the film description indicates that Ed Wood, here, made his first legitimate film. If the film is legitimate simply because it is less inept and hilarious than his other films, I do think this statement is quite misleading. Ed Wood never made a film that would receive any serious consideration for legitimacy from the mainstream and the critical masses. Ed Wood, now more than ever before, remains in a class all his own. Ed Wood's films are stamped with his trademark zeal, good humor, and distorted logic, and remain the work of a filmmaker who may have lacked talent, but was never lacking in purpose. The Ed Wood box set is a perfect way to enjoy Ed Wood's films for the first or twentieth time. This set is a great buy, but don't neglect to check out Tim Burton's 'Ed Wood,' in my opinion, one of the greatest film biographies ever made.

Japan's classic monster movie is back again! Not only does he carry a two-hundred foot house on his back, but he also has the weight of the world on his shoulders. Gamera - a giant, flying, fire-breathing turle, friend to children everywhere, and protector of Earth - is now available in a collectible hard shell.
Customer Reviews:
Worth it for Disc 2 alone.......2007-03-14
The first movie is rather slow. But the second one is pretty freaking awesome, especially if you activate language Track 3!! Texarcana Lake Gamera is one of the funniest things I've ever seen/heard. More like "What's Up, tigerlily?" than Mystery science theater, they redubbed the entire movie except for the main female character in redneck voices and altered the script to hilarious effect while still following the general storyline. It's rare that something will make me laugh sitting watching it by myself but this one had me chuckling throughout. I could have done without about 50 of the "Holy Crap!" dubs that were WAY overused but some of the things were so clever that I forgive them this one excess. The General that sounded like George Bush was hilarious, the one who was dubbed with the voice of a 7 year old boy was insane and the radioman that just says "Kyuh Kyuh Kyuh" like Roscoe P. Coltrane from the "Dukes of Hazzard" was genius. I have yet to watch the third film but I have no doubt the commentary by Gamera will be amusing. Unless it's just Gamera screaming through the whole movie in which case it will only be amusing for about 30 seconds. So if you like Wild Turkey, Bar B Que, Guns and your sister a little too much this is definitely the box set for you!
Friend of Children & Giant Monster Fans Everywhere.......2007-02-02
Even the most causal fans of the "giant Japanese monster movies" that were staples of 1960s "creature features" will delight in this three disc set! Gamera gets an incredible updating while retaining the "turtle cry", the flaming breath, the flight by spinning shell; in short, everything we loved in a package that is slick, skillful and dazzling. A triumph on all levels, with stories kids can still enjoy, while being more mature than the original films were. If only all movies could be this well done.
Gamera ROCKS!!!.......2007-01-10
I haven't seen the Giant Turtle since I was a kid, I LOVE these new movies!
I had the 60's ones on DVD, but the special effects on the 3 new movies was out of this world!
If you are a Godzilla Fan then you'll LOVE Gamera!!!
Good box set but its non-anamorphic.......2007-01-06
So if you have a Widescreen tv you'll have to deal with zooming the picture to fill it in.
The unknown giant.......2006-09-11
I never heard of this monster called Gamera before, till I saw it here at Amazon. I read a few of the reviews and thought: "Let's try this".
I'm really glad I did. This is a great collection of three terrific movies. The special effects are stunning. I don't think I ever saw more beautiful explosions. The explosion of the Kyoto train station (in the third movie: Revenge of Iris) is incredible, as well as the total destruction of Tokio when Gamera suddenly appears in that same movie.
And what about the acting. Well, I've seen a lot worse in Godzilla films. The third film is without a doubt the best acted film of the three, but the other two ain't bad at all.
The stories aren't great, the second one is a mess really. There are so many characters you cannot tell them apart, but this second movie has the most fantastic monster though. It is called Legion and it really is a worthy adversary. Great stuff !!!
And then something about the extra's on the disc's: A lot of trailers and an interesting three part interview with the special effects director. But the craziest extra is a soundtrack (on the second film) in which all the characters speak like rednecks and the music is changed to hillbilly style. It's called the Texarcana lake track. It's insane but absolute fun.
Now, the big question, should you buy this. If you like Godzilla films, I think the answer is clear: Yes, absolutely.

Description
RESIDENT EVIL: Something rotten is brewing beneath the industrial mecca known as Raccoon City. A huge underground bioengineering facility known as The Hive has accidentally unleashed the deadly and mutating T-virus, killing all of its employees. Now a team of highly-trained super commandos including Rain (Michelle Rodriguez - The Fast and the Furious, Girlfight), Alice (Milla Jovovich - The Fifth Element) and Matt (Eric Mabius - Cruel Intentions) must race to penetrate The Hive in order to isolate the T-virus before it overwhelms humanity. RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE: After narrowly escaping the horrors of the underground Hive facility, Alice (Milla Jovovich) is quickly thrust back into a war raging above ground between the living and the Undead. As the city is locked down under quarantine, Alice joins a small band of elite soldiers to rescue the missing daughter of Dr. Ashford, the creator of the mutating T-virus. Written and produced by the visionary director of Resident Evil, Paul W. S. Anderson (Alien Vs. Predator) and directed by Alexander Witt, RESIDENT EVIL: Apocalypse is a superior sci-fi suspense sequel.

Resident Evil - Apocalypse - 5 stars.......2005-08-07
From all the reviews I've read for this movie, they're pretty mixed in opinion. Some people Have been ranging on about how the movie sucked and how "scantly dressed" the female characters (I.E., Jill Valentine and Alice) are and ect. But really, the reviews --- for the most part--- could not be more far from the truth than the Miami Dolphins lost in Baltimore. "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" is the coolest movie of late summer 2004, only second to "Spider-Man II." It's that great of a movie. Contrary to belief, "Resident Evil" had a major scare factor for me, I still cannot will myself to watch the Claustrophobic-filmed movie that left me with a sense of hopelessness for the characters as they were attacked by the former "Hive" employees of the Umbrella Corporation. So you can believe that when I heard "RE:A" was on Television (7-2-05) I had a pretty hard time willing myself to watch it. I was that scared of it. I had watched enough for the first movie to understand the sequel:
- [The Umbrella CORP. has reopened the hive after capturing Matt (Eric Malbus) and Alice from their narrow escape from the hive upon sealing it to prevent further contamination. Both have been subjected to laboratory experiments with the T-Virus under the orders of men named Dr. Isaacs (Iain Glen - Tomb Raider), but only Alice is left partially unscathed through the entire incident. However, Alice's attempts to keep the T-virus from escaping the underground facility were foiled by the Umbrella CORP when they reopen the HIVE and released the T-Virus and the lickers along with it. Thus creating mass hysteria within the walls of Raccoon City whose citizens have fallen prey to the deadly virus and are locked inside the city when it reaches the city limits.
Jill Valentine (from CAPCOM's Resident Evil game series, played by Sienna Guillory) a S.T.A.R.S. operative who was suspended for her accusations against the Umbrella CORP., her partner Pyeton Wells (Razaaq Adoti), along with whether reporter Terri Morales (Sandrine Holt), take refuge in a church after Pyeton is bitten by one of the recently undead at the city gate and are met with more trouble. Their saving grace happens to be "PROGRAM" Alice (Milla Jovovich!!) who has been genetically enhanced by the T-virus and Anti-virus, armed to the teeth with guns of every kind and superhuman strength to boot.
The newfound group of survivors make their way through the city toward a hopeful exit before Raccoon City is sanitized by a Nuclear Missile strong enough to reradiate the virus and everything else. They're then contacted by Dr. Charles Ashford (Jared Harris), the creator of the T-virus, who wants them to head to the school where his daughter Angela "Angie" Ashford (Sophie Vavasseur; "Evelyn - 2001") --- whom he designed the "RED QUEEN" after ---- is hiding out after the van she was in was hit with a Semi truck. Right behind them S.T.A.R.S. elite Carlos Olivera (Oded Fehr) and Nicholai Sokolov (whom was a villain in the game. ---- played by Zack Ward) and the wandering Raccoon City resident pimp L.J. (Mike Epps) who also get a call from the so-called "Dr. Doom. Unbeknownst to the group as they approach the school, the Umbrella CORP. has unleashed their ultimate Bio-weapon "PROGRAM" Nemesis (from Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Played by Matthew G. Taylor and not Eric Malbus) monitored by Major Cain (Thomas Kretschmann), whose primary objective is to kill all the S.T.A.R.S. members that were still alive and battle Alice for superiority of sorts.]"
---------- Apocalypse deals heavily with Alice regaining her forgotten memory after she is captured and subjected to tests and the secondary star of the movie "Nemesis" who was her friend, Matt Addison. While the movie deals with the subject of the undead, the plot is strictly character driven in the every way possible; You actual care about what will happen to all the people who survived the outbreak in Raccoon City. The scare factor in the movie for me has diminished somewhat after I conquered my fear of watching it but it still holds some kind of fear over me when it comes to all the Undead scenes which are truly something to be scared about for the "most" part. Milla Jovovich's character Alice kicks Jill Valentine (who really isn't given much to do in the movie) to the passengers seat and really kicks major ass in this movie, the action scenes in this movie are a sight to behold, its practically nonstop through out the entire movie but does nothing to dissipate the movie's twisting plot.
Alice's stunts are the coolest ever--- from the graveyard battle, the 100-Foot dash down City Hall (which Milla did the last of the stunt herself) to her battle with Nemesis, the action for this character is undeniably the best ever and better than her exploits in the first movie. Jill Valentine, however, manages to hold a special place in my heart and basically gets to do some pretty awesome things herself (Fighting the undead to some wicked handgun fights) but her range is basically limited since the movie is focused on Alice. The comic Relief provided by Mike Epps' character "L.J. ," is actually pretty funny and does not kill the atmosphere of horror/action in the movie.
Oded Fehr does pretty a pretty good job with the limited character Carlos Olivera, he's never too macho and his character is quite likable (much like Nicholai was). Most of all the music is well fitted and plays best on the most important parts of movie overall. Best of all, Resident Evil: Apocalypse deals heavily with the video games in only a way the fanboys of the games would recognize. All in all this movie was up-to-specs and majorly different from the horde of Horror movies concerning the Undead that came out in 2004. There are indeed, plot holes big enough to stick your finger through but this does nothing to diminish the movie's high-rate enjoyment. Purchase this movie if your a fan of Milla Jovovich or the Resident Evil series, but consider this movie with an open mind. This movie contains brief scenes of nudity, mild-swearing, gory scenes, frightening images, and nonstop action violence (Written by Paul Anderson, Directed by Alexander Witt). FYI: The female protagonists, Jill and Alice are not "scantly dressed" they're quite covered with clothing for combat and easy mobility -----[a 5 out of 5]
If you played the video games... you'll love the movies!.......2005-07-09
Not many video game based movies turn out well, but Resident Evil is an exception to the rule. The second rule is that a sequel is never as good as the original... Apocalypse breaks this rule. Although losing Michelle Rodriguez was dissapointing, the second movie obviously has a bigger budget and really lives up as a sequel. Now.. this movie IS based on a video game.. so if realistic plots and the norm is what you expect, you won't like this movie. But the original video game scared the bejesus out of me at the time and the movie sticks true to the game... especially the zombie dogs!! So have fun with these 2 movies, and they will prove to entertain you for sure!
3 and 1/2 stars. Good fun.......2005-07-04
These movies were both good sci-fi/ action/ horror movies that are still inferior to the Blade trilogy. So if you want to have the best sci-fi/ horror movies of the 2, Blade's better. If you want to have the classic, check out the Alien Quadrilogy, but if you just want to have some fun, buy this set. They're both good, solid movies with good suspense and great action and special effects.
Resident Evil (# 1) is about a group of soldiers that must destroy a virus before it has a deadly effect on the world.
Resident Evil Apocalypse- Alice played by Mila Jockavich has to help fight the undead and has to rescue a missing girl.
Both movies have good action scenes where you'll be like:" wow! That was cool!!" but the 2nd one is better with better action and more memorable stuff. I recommend them as rents to everyone and buys for absolute die hard funs. You'll just have a good time watching them.

In the first season of The X-Files, creator Chris Carter was uncertain of the series' future, so each of the episodes is a self-contained suspense story; they do not delve deep into the ongoing X-Files mythology or turn to self-parody and humor as do episodes in later seasons. Yet, these episodes display the elements for which the show would become famous: the cinematic production values and top-notch special effects, the stark lighting of the Vancouver sets, the atmospheric halo of Mark Snow's score, and the clever plots dealing with subjects ranging from the occult, religion, and monsters to urban legends, conspiracy theories, and science fiction. Most importantly, season 1 introduces FBI agents Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Fox "Spooky" Mulder (David Duchovny), two of the most attractive government officials around. Scully is the serious-minded medical scientist assigned to join Mulder on the X-Files, a division of the FBI dealing with the paranormal. Mulder is the intuitive thinker with a dry wit, a passionate believer in the existence of paranormal phenomena and one of the few characters on television smart enough to figure out who the bad guy is before the audience does. Their muddled relationship, a deep friendship laced with sexual tension, provides the human heart in a world where the bizarre and horrible lurk in everyday society.
The materials on the bonus disc provide some interesting trivia and background, but it is the 24 episodes themselves that make this seven-disc boxed set a true find. Those unfamiliar with The X-Files often view all the fuss with the same skepticism with which Scully first regards her new partner's ideas. But just as she comes to realize the uncanny accuracy of Mulder's outlandish theories, newcomers to The X-Files who sample a few episodes in this boxed set will likely find themselves riveted to their television late into the night. And undoubtedly, the shadows and creaking noises in the house that evening will seem more menacing than usual. --Eugene Wei

"They've been here for a very long time".......2007-06-27
The first season of the X-Files introduces Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Mulder is a disgraced FBI special agent/conspiracy theorist working in the basement on unsolved cases known as x-files. Scully is a FBI medical examiner sent by the Bureau's big wigs to partner with Mulder to report and hopefully debunk the purpose of Mulder's project. As the season progresses Mulder and Scully's professional relationship transforms into one of mutual respect as Mulder, the believer, proposes unusual explanations for the events they investigate while Scully, the skeptic, trys to be more realistic. Their ability to counter-balence one another provides the show with two of the best characters we've ever seen on television. The mytharc episodes are a good introduction for the story we will expect to see throughout the rest of the series and, while their are a few duds, most of the stand alone episodes are worth watching again and again.
Nine Out of Twenty-Four.......2007-06-11
The first season of "The X-Files" isn't a season that you should buy hoping to enjoy every episode. That being said, the nine great episodes are worth the price. Granted, nine out of twenty-four isn't a good ratio by any means, but every episode does have its own little quirks that make it passable. I just walked away from the majority of the episodes with an overwhelmed feeling. Maybe I'm used to the intricate plotting of modern serial television, but it just seemed as if the season could have been planned better.
The best episodes of the season are the following:
Pilot
Squeeze
Eve
Fire
Beyond the Sea
Gender Bender
Miracle Man (best of the season)
Tooms
The Erlenmeyer Flask
Beside the fact that the show, except for a few of Mulder's comments, is humorless (I heard that changes down the road, so I won't really get into that until I check out the other seasons), I sometimes find myself having a problem with Gillian Anderson's portrayal of Scully. The camera often shows close-ups of Scully's face when she's talking, but there is never a glimmer of emotion in the her face. Her eyes always remain dead focused, as if she is staring at a wall instead of talking to a person. Her lines often seem forced, compared to Duchovny's more loose, more human portrayal of Fox Mulder.
From the rave reviews and the cult following this show has, I did expect better from the debut season of "The X-Files." However, I'll keep watching, because I trust the public: It'll get better. It will get better. I hope it gets better.
6/10
X-Files , Season One.......2007-06-11
Awesome to be able to see the original series in its entirety, and so neatly presented. Great extras. Highly recommend.
Lost in the Xfiles.......2007-05-28
I feel like I won the jackpot. I'm sure there are others out there who also lucked out too. But I just had to tell folks I bought seasons 1-7 of the original Collector Edition sets (not the slim set) for $[...] each at Costco. If you have a Costco near you, check it out, although I've noticed that at least near me, all the stores are pretty much out of them.
As for the shows, they are mesmeric and a hazard to the ability to carry on a productive life. Once you start on episode 1 season one, your life is no longer yours.
Having said that I do have favorites, I think Small Potatoes and Dreamland are at the top with Jose Chung & Clyde B, War of C, Humbug. Maybe because I like Shandling I also enjoyed Hollywood A.D. alot.
Out of season 1 I liked the Pilot because it it just that, the beginning. Darkness Falls was great.
Like everyone else though, Season 3 is without question the genius of the series. It is one of the most brilliant seasons of TV ever.
Just Great.......2007-05-13
X Files was the best program to air on our TV's. I was lost when it ended but now I can watch the whole series over and over. It is fantastic to go back over the earlier episodes and re-live Fox and Scully all over again.
Just great

While the first season of The X-Files introduced us to Scully and Mulder, the second season finds the show confidently hitting its stride. Building on its earlier success, the show evolves, and in these 25 episodes, a glimpse is shown of a longer-running story line (which will continue through subsequent seasons) that is woven into the usual stand-alone episodes of the paranormal. These so-called mythology episodes hint at a global conspiracy involving sinister government agents, UFOs, alien abductions, genetic engineering, the ever-lurking Cigarette Smoking Man, and Fox Mulder's father. Season 2 fleshes out Mulder's family history, including the childhood abduction of his sister Samantha, an event that would shape him for life. Actress Gillian Anderson (Scully) became unexpectedly pregnant during season 2, but series creator Chris Carter managed to dance nimbly around her absence and even integrate it into the show. As in season 1, Mulder and Scully are surrounded by a strong supporting cast, which adds a suspicious new agent named Alex Krycek, an informant named X, and a seemingly indestructible alien bounty hunter.
Among the standout episodes are "The Host," "Duane Barry/Ascension," "Humbug," "Dod Kalm," "Colony/End Game," and "Anasazi." These episodes are a powerful reminder that The X-Files, like no other show on television, can span horror, suspense, mystery, romance, drama, and comedy, sometimes all in the same episode, and always with the production values of a major feature film. --Eugene Wei

More of the same white knuckle viewing........2007-03-18
`X-Files' Season 2, created by Chris Carter and starring David Duchovney and Gillian Anderson is entirely consistent in quality with Season 1, and everything I said about that release is true of this one as well.
One of the most distinguishing features of this season is that Ms. Anderson was pregnant throughout the first third of the season, and an arc of three shows was done to remove her from the scene while she was off on maternity leave. In spite of her delicate condition, the scripts continued to put her character and her costar into mortal danger in virtually every episode.
A second major distinction of this season is fact that `Deep Throat' from season 1 was killed off at the end of that season, to be replaced by a very similar character simply labeled `X'. This character was worked into the episodes when the `X-Files' unit of the FBI was reinstated about a third of the way into the season, just in time for Gillian to get back from her maternity leave.
The order of episode themes in this season is very similar to season 1, in that there is a rough alternation between Alien Visitor and homegrown weirdness. One of the very best episodes, `Humbug', which literally comes off as a comedy, involves virtually no paranormal activity at all. It almost seems like a take-off on the classic cult film `Freaks', made in the 1930s.
My biggest complaint about the premises underlying the entire series is the way in which agents of our government are split in four different antagonistic directions. First, there is the X-Files unit within the FBI, being our heroes, Muldur and Scully. Then there is the FBI hierarchy, represented primarily by Assistant Director Skinner. Then, there is the shadowy conglomerate of some other government agencies, primarily representing `the military', whose figurehead is `the cigarette smoking man'. Last, there is the `X' character, who represents some other shadowy conglomerate of government agencies who are seemingly on Muldur and Scully's side, but seem to offer nothing more than obscure clues and directions, when they feel like it (or more accurately, when the script needs a `deux ex machina' to move it along).
Another thing that tends to spoil things for me in some episodes is the degree to which the stories are stolen from other well-known works, the most common source being recent major films such as `The Exorcist'. I also get a bit antsy when a script misuses some arcane piece of scientific theory, as when `End Game' plays off the notion of `dark matter'. On the other hand, the season closing cliff-hanger episode manages to steal a march on a later film, `The Code Talkers', based on the use of the Navaho language as a code in the Pacific Theatre of Operations, which, according to both dramatic works, the Japanese were never able to crack or translate.
On the other hand, I really enjoy the occasional appearance of some interesting character actors in lead roles now and then. For example, I loved seeing `Mr. Monk' (Tony Shalhoub) in `End Game' and William Sanderson (an important minor character in `Blade Runner' and `Larry' from `Newhart') in the episode, `Blood', just as it was a gas to see Bradley Whitford as the leading guest character in a season 1 show.
Just like most modern dramas, one of the best features is the rapport between the two principal characters. This chemistry is shown in many ways, some quite subtle, as when both characters constantly answer their calls to their partner with the statement `It's me.' They even use this greeting when they meet one another unexpectedly. This rapport is often a major part of episodes, especially since one or both major characters is so often getting into perilous and quite deadly situations.
The extras are not `great', but they are interesting. The best thing about the set is that it is an excellent presentation of episodes from a major TV series. I will reinforce the impressions of other reviewers that this is done well, since they have probably seen more different series than I.
This series has become a minor milestone in TV history. It is not quite as iconic as `The Twilight Zone', but it is stronger than its inspiration, `The Night Stalker'. To my lights, it is also in general superior as Science Fiction than most `Star Trek' episodes from its various incarnations. I think it is more rewatchable than many series, if not quite as addicting for me as `The West Wing'.
GOOD BUT..........2007-03-16
Things to consider about this product:
- Image and sound are not so good, especially because it's an old programme.
- It's 2.1 and not 5.1
- The package (the boxes) are too thin.
- It's much cheaper than the collector's edition but it does not include something important for collectors, the 7th CD with the extras!!
- I still do not understand why FOX overprices the collector's edition and makes it impossible for us to buy it. I think it is too expensive!! Besides if they want to save money in packaging, why did they eliminate the 7th cd? How much money can it cost to add that CD? Please!!!
- The series is excellent and worth watching.
Technical Notes On The Slim Sets.......2007-02-26
I wanted to point out something technical about the slim set discs that I bought. If you're looking for insight into the episodes or characters - please look elsewhere.
When I put the first disc of Season One into my DVD player, it started the "loading" process and gave me a disc error after about one minute. Instead of cursing Fox (well, I did it later anyway) I turned the player off, leaving the disc inside. After a couple of minutes, I turned my DVD player on and Viola! I heard the X-Files theme and saw the menus (after the obligatory FBI copyright infringement warnings).
For those wondering, the DVD player in question above is a Philips Progressive Scan. The same problem occurred on a newer Panasonic player. No glitches materialized when I tried the discs on the Sony or AKAI players. In all cases, I was eventually able to get to the episodes. With the first two the screen sometimes showed up scrambled and the menus inaccessible. On other occasions I was able to access a root menu similar to one you would see if you "explore" the DVD contents on a PC (Video_TS files, etc.), though the players would not load any content from these menus. Speaking of PC viewing, I experienced no problems with any of the discs on my PC and all four programs my PC has to play DVDs functioned perfectly.
PLEASE DON'T READ INTO THIS TOO MUCH. I don't work for Fox - I'm not trying to encourage sales of the more expensive sets. This was just a personal experience I had, and it seemed to occur less frequently with Seasons 4 - 9. My uneducated opinion: the equipment I have isn't top of the line, and maybe wasn't equipped to handle the way the content was compressed. I was impressed that 4, sometimes 5 episodes were squeezed on one disc. That's three - almost four hours of content. I know - dual layer DVDs and blah, blah, blah. But c'mon - even Lord of the Rings - Return of the King was issued on 2 discs! (By the way, the content looked and sounded great.)
Another side note: Seasons 1 - 4 that I got were full frame, and 5 - 9 are widescreen. At first I thought I had missed the option when purchasing these discs, but these are the only way I've found them at retail stores and online. Nothing major; I just thought I was losing my mind at first. (Which is still a possibility.) I can't remember if they aired this way on television - I just noticed that the cinematography got revved up a bit starting with Season 5. If this observation is incorrect, someone please feel free to correct me.
Okay. If you have read this entire review give yourself a pat on the back, a cookie, I dunno - watch some old Doctor Who episodes or something. A better price, better packaging, and better for you. (They were giving out a carton of Morley's with the bigger sets, right?) By the way - the 5 stars is based on my overall X-Files enjoyment. Sure, there are episodes I can skip through. But for me, it's good bang for the buck. Enjoy!
don't be fooled by negative reviews..........2007-02-15
most of the negative reviews for this product result from the fact that it's basically a repackaged version of the more expensive edition that was released previously. despite being in full screen (it was shot in widescreen, but they dont' show up on dvd in 16X9 until season 5) and not having much in the way of bonus features, this is an excellent DVD set. the X-files is one of the best shows that has been on TV and the second season is a dramatic improvement over the hit-and-miss first season (but not as good as season 4, which is one of the strongest seasons).
The X-Files - The Complete Second Season (Slim Set).......2007-02-12
I love it! Saved $$ and I get to finally catch up on the X-Files!

Despite a roster of disreputable films that includes everything from Bloodsucking Freaks to Terror Firmer, Troma Films' crowning achievement remains its comic book tribute/parody The Toxic Avenger (1985) and its pair of 1989 sequels. The comedy/action/sci-fi effort, about a crime-fighting monster spawned from chemical sludge, is as proudly crude as Troma's other films, but also genuinely funny and competently directed by company chiefs Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz. The combination of slapstick and splatter helped earn the film the broadest audience recognition of any Troma film prior to Tromeo and Juliet--so much so, in fact, that several years later, the Toxic Avenger would be given his own Saturday morning cartoon.
Troma's affection for Toxie is made abundantly clear with The Tox Box, a lavish (by the company's standards) four-disc package that contains the three features as well as four episodes of Toxic Crusaders, Toxie's animated adventures. Troma fanatics should note that that the discs for Toxic Avenger I and III are largely identical to versions that were released independently within the last few years, but the disc for Toxic Avenger II is a true "uncut" version (with more violence) that differs markedly from the previously released R-rated DVD. As with all Troma DVDs, each disc is packed with supplemental material, from Lloyd Kaufman's hilarious (and often unhinged) commentary to a wealth of excised scenes, trailers, and production stills. Toxic Crusaders even includes a pair of '40s-era serials in their entirety to fill out its scant running time. Cineastes may decry that lowbrow material such as this has been given the deluxe treatment, and even Toxie fans may wonder if this much Troma is good for their mental health, but DVD buyers must admit that The Tox Box is an embarrassment of riches. --Paul Gaita

A Respect Super Hero.......2006-08-02
A boy turn into a Super Hero with help of the toxic waste. Helping everyone to fight evil away.A loving monster everyone appeased his good deed. You must get this box set.
Original is excellent, the rest are horrible........2005-09-12
To be brief, the original movie is an excellent classic for all to enjoy. The other 2 aren't worth speaking of. I couldn't even watch more than 15 minutes of part3. This movie was almost as bad as Van Helsing.
Reviews on all the TOXIC AVENGER movies........2005-01-23
The Toxic Avenger is a masterpiece from Troma while the sequels are decent the first is a classic.
The Toxic Avenger-*****-Entertaining black comedy features a nerdy janitor that is picked on and accidentally falls into toxic waste and becomes a hero around Tromaville and then the fun starts. The Mexican restaraunt scene is a classic as well as the head crushing scene. Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz are geniuses.
The Toxic Avenger part 2-**- Don't really remember this one too well but the plot has Toxie(aka Melvin) in Japan.
The Toxic Avenger part 3:The Last Temptation of Toxie- So-so chapter has Toxie working for a company called Apocalypse to help get his blind girlfriend her eyesight back and soon discovers the boss is a devilish villian. The movie store scene is another classic where punks try robbing it and one of those punks get there hand in the VHS rewinder and the close-up of the hand being grinded and then Toxie gets a mop and jams in his head and twists his head right off and blood squirts everywhere. Overall the Toxic Avenger movies are watchable B-movies with good production values and excellent special effects.
Im moveing to tromaville !.......2004-07-16
let me start by saying i orderd the tox box withought seeing any of the movies. was i naive ? sure i was ! the way i seen it was , theres no way they cant be wonderful . was i wrong ? NOPE ! the movies are great. the sequals are in my opinion , alot better than people have been saying , there fun ! the toxic crusaders dvd is very cool to watch . i dont remember the show cause i was 3 in 1991. not only did the tox box open the doors to how great toxie is it revealed the wonderful world of TROMA. it apeares oveous that Lloyd Kaufman and the rest of the staff at troma put there heart and soul into makeing some great dvds for the fans .
If you don't own this, why are you even alive?.......2004-03-05
The Toxic Avenger, the crown jewel of Tromaville Productions. Melvin certainly has come a long way. From a hot blind girlfriend at the dump (Who does her makeup anyway?), to Japan and cooking villians in the bathhouse. The Toxic Avenger is a dynamite, soul brother, action adventure for the whole family. Seriously, what other movie has a leotard wearing freak pointing a double barreled shotgun at a baby? Or a chick masturbating to pictues of bodies her boyfriend ran over? How do you fight with fish? Can you windsail from New Jersey to Japan? How many people can Toxie fight at once? All these and many more questions are answered. Buy this now or live a miserable and empty life.

BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA
Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder and Anthony Hopkins star in director Francis Ford Coppola's visually stunning, passionately seductive version of the classic Dracula legend. In BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA, Coppola returns to the original source of the Dracula myth, and from that gothic romance, he creates a modern masterpiece. Gary Oldman's metamorphosis as Dracula who grows from old to young, from man to beast is nothing short of amazing. Winona Ryder brings equal intensity to the role of a young beauty who becomes the object of Dracula's devastating desire. Anthony Hopkins co-stars as the famed doctor who dares to believe in Dracula, and then dares to confront him. Opulent, dazzling and utterly irresistible, this is Dracula as you've never seen him. And once you've seen BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA, you'll never forget it.
MARY SHELLEY'S FRANKENSTEIN
Robert De Niro, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hulce, Helena Bonham Carter, Aidan Quinn, Ian Holm and John Cleese star in Branagh's acclaimed adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. True to the original, here is the story of a young doctor whose obsession with death leads him to create a life. But his "creature" crafted from the bodies of convicts and the brain of a brilliant scientist, is a hideous mockery of humanity. And when the creature realizes he will never be accepted by men, he seeks revenge on Dr. Frankenstein and his family. An inspired adaptation that's emotionally complex and truly terrifying.

Two of the best monster movies ever made.......2006-11-04
Bram Stoker's Dracula and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein are two classic monster stories that are brought to life brilliantly in these movies. How can you beat Gary Oldman's performance as Dracula and Robert DeNiro's portrayal of Frankenstein's monster. They are both well made and are in no way cheesy (like most monster movies). For those of you who might be concerned about content I will warn you that there is nudity and sexuality in the Dracula movie but Frankenstein is very clean and would only be inappropriate for little children due to its scary nature. But overall I think these movies are great for mature teens and adults. If you like monster movies or would just like to see a good...no, the BEST...on-screen interpretation of these two classic characters, then this is the set you need to buy.
I Agree.......2006-03-28
I agree with the kid who wrote the last review. These are exceptionally well done films and are very faithful to the novels. The performances are all exceptional (save for some of Winona Ryder's British accent in Dracula)with perfect casting. I also have the same complaints : 'Where are the special features?' and 'Why is Frankenstein in FULLSCREEN only? Why must studios screw good movies over in just Fullscreen (Moonstruck)? Couldn't it just as easily been widescreen or both(also Moonstruck)?' And yes, Dracula does need a new menu doesn't it?
P.S.- I highly reccomend the film WOLF, just as the kid who wrote the last review did. It is sleek and intelligent (just like the box says!) and is also filled with exceptional performances.
Great movies but the DVDs.......2006-02-20
I just got this today these are the two most faithful versions to their novels out there Dracula is very elaborate and powereful Frankenstein is also great go for this set
But the DVDs the only Thing wrong with Frankenstein is that it is in fullscreen,Dracula However Needs Special Features and a better Menu Look but i can live with it
also check out "Wolf"
waaait for the Special EDITIONS!.......2005-12-28
Both are great movies and i'm hoping this year both get a nice treatment, they should be Special Editions!
Two Great Films-One Hell Of A Deal. "Love Never Dies." "Be Warned. It's Alive." FFC And KB SUCCEED TREMENDOUSLY........2005-11-24
Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 version of "Bram Stoker's Dracula" and Kenneth Branagh's 1994 "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" are classics in their own right. Now, for the first time, these two faithful adaptations of the classic Gothic horror novels are available together for your ultimate viewing pleasure. Though this set hasn't been released yet, I have both of these great films (one on DVD-damn shame that it is only available in full screen and with no special features apart from the trailers [one for the feature film itself, the other two for "Much Ado About Nothing" and "Awakenings"] and the other on VHS). See my reviews on both films and the novels on which they are based. "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" is rated PG for some violence. "Bram Stoker's Dracula" is rated PG-13 for some violence and brief sensuality/nudity.

Superheroes from South of the Border.......2005-04-19
It is not an easy task to explain to the average North-American raised on over-priced Hollywood cheese how great these movies are. Don't get me wrong I love Hollywood cheese (I just can't stand waiting in line to get processed food of any kind). That said, Santo, Blue Demon, Mil Mascaras are the three powerhouse icons of this misunderstood genre. It's misunderstood partly because it really isn't a genre, but a clever blending of genres. Only the likes of Quentin Tarantino would be bold enough to explore the novelty of combining genres several years later. It's had a huge payoff.
Mexican Masked Wrestler movies were influenced by Hollywood B-movies of the shlock sci-fi variety of the 1950's. Production values were low because many of these features were independent ventures. There were no Corporate Studios willing to fund such a strange mix. I am not a fan of Wrestling, especially the "WWF smackdown" stuff, but Mexican Lucha Libre (freestyle fighting) was fun to watch. It did not pretend to be real. The masks were clues that these were staged events. It was only a matter of course that fantastic movies would be the next step.
There is a bit of nostalgia tied to many of us who remember growing up with these films. They were made in the language of our Fathers. We could be Superheroes too. Superman was the first. And while I loved Superman for his universal appeal I once read that the Nazis reputedly said he was Jewish. Now don't get me wrong, but I also read that the creators of Superman were Jewish. I still love Superman, but he was supposed to be from Krypton, which rhymes with cryptic, which implies a hidden message. So much for universal appeal. Oddly enough we have come to identify ourselves with Men in masks fighting against impossible odds. That's a whole other sociological issue.
Above all these films are funny. Whether they are intentionally funny or not is a moot point. The reality is that making a movie about a Mexican masked wrestler battling Hollywood monsters is FUNNY. It's not high drama, it is "kitsch". For example: In "Santo & Blue Demon Vs the Monsters" (not in this collection) there is a carchase where the heroes are being pursued by the Monsters. What's so funny about that? The Frankenstein monster is driving! I immediately thought of the late comedian Phil Hartman doing his "Fire baad!" routine in Frankenstein makeup on Saturday Night Live.
These films are not only funny and exciting but pertinent to our sense of being in the world. Larga Vida a Santo, Blue Demon, Mil Mascaras y Huracan Ramirez Tambien!!
En la lucha libre...BOOM!.......2004-05-22
Being from Puerto Rico, I was exposed to wrestling all my life, from these mexican wrestlers to the WWF/WCW wrestlers and also to the local wrestling federations (owned by Vince McMahon). Anyway, because of my exposure to wrestling, these films have a great place in my heart. The pure cheesiness of the movies, the terrible acting, the excellent action scenes and wrestling matches, these four movies are entertaining all the way through. A must have for wrestling fans and b-movie fans.
Where is John Carradine When You Need Him?.......2004-02-21
For those of you not familiar with the genre, Santo is a very famous Mexican wrestler and quasi-superhero, who has numerous adventures filled with excitement and suspense. At least that's the theory, anyway. What the Santo movies actually contain is a hysterical combination of bad dialogue and silly plot devices only serving to amuse in a kind of John Carradine vs. Hulk Hogan sort of way.
In this film, Santo is pitted against the daughter of Dr. Frankenstein, Freda Frankenstein, and her minions of evil. Mayhem prevails when Santo faces her monster, Ursus, and her plan to enslave him and use his blood for her own diabolical purposes.
I am seriously hoping that the Santo films are not representative of Mexican cinema, in that they are unintentionally hilarious to watch, kind of like "Plan 9 From Outer Space" in Spanish (English subtitles are provided.) As a bonus, every Santo movie has scenes of him wrestling in a no holds barred format, and this is no exception, with two 'championship' matches spliced into the film so poorly that the jump cut will make your neck hurt.
Four stars, for the most wrestler vs. bad guy action since Jesse Ventura became Governor of Minnesota!
santo forever.......2004-01-26
