This 1956 pop adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest is one of the best, most influential science fiction movies ever made. Its space explorers are the models for the crew of Star Trek's Enterprise, and the film's robot is clearly the prototype for Robby in Lost in Space. Walter Pidgeon is the Prospero figure, presiding over a paradisiacal world with his lovely young daughter and their servile droid. When the crew of a spaceship lands on the planet, they become aware of a sinister invisible force that threatens to destroy them. Great special effects and a bizarre electronic score help make this movie as fresh, imaginative, and fun as it was when first released. --Amazon.com

On the DVDs
The colorfully designed 2-disc 50th Anniversary Edition of Forbidden Planet (also available in a collector's box) comes in a slip-covered fold-out case accompanied by a pocket of 17 miniature lobby card reproductions (eight for Forbidden Planet, nine for the 1957 companion movie The Invisible Boy). On Disc 1, Forbidden Planet is presented with a new digital transfer from restored picture and audio elements, with soundtrack remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1, offering considerable improvement over the film's previous DVD release. A selection of deleted scenes were taken from a faded and scratchy 16-millimeter "work print" that had originally been viewed by composers Louis and Bebe Barron as they were creating the film's unique electronic score; they consist of full or partial scenes cut from the final film-- mostly for good reason, but collectors (and those who first saw this rare material on the original Criterion Collection laserdisc) will welcome their inclusion here. The "lost footage" is crude special-effects test footage, primarily of interest to sci-fi historians and aficionados. Given the fact that the original "Robby the Robot" cost over $100,000 to build in 1955, it's easy to see why MGM wanted to get their money's worth: An excerpt from the 1950s TV series "MGM Parade" shows Forbidden Planet star Walter Pigeon appearing briefly with Robby, and the popular robot gets even more attention as a guest star in "The Robot Client," an episode of the Thin Man TV series (starring Peter Lawford and Phyllis Kirk) that originally aired on Feb. 28, 1958. Disc 1 also includes a gallery of seven science-fiction movie trailers dating from 1953 (The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms) to 1960's The Time Machine.

Disc 2 begins with 1957's The Invisible Boy, a still-enjoyable B-movie that served as Robby's post-Forbidden Planet showcase. Here, filmdom's favorite automaton plays sidekick to a young boy (Richard Eyer) who turns invisible when he gets caught up in a super-computer's scheme of global domination. Also included are three documentaries, ranging from very good to excellent: In addition to reuniting the surviving cast members of the '56 classic (including Leslie Nielsen, Anne Francis, Richard Anderson, Warren Stevens, and Earl Holliman), "Amazing! Exploring the Far Reaches of Forbidden Planet" is an appreciative tribute to Forbidden Planet with some of Hollywood's foremost sci-fi fans including special effects masters Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett, SF movie expert Bill Warren, and others. "Robby the Robot: Engineering a Sci-Fi Icon" is a featurette about the robot's design, creation and pop-cultural history, featuring original "Robby" designer Robert Kinoshita, Bill Malone (current owner of the original Robby), and Fred "The Robot Man" Barton, a lifelong robot fanatic who now sells fully authorized, full-scale replicas of Robby for sci-fi fans with deep pockets. Closing out disc 2 is "Watch the Skies!: Science Fiction, the 1950s and Us," a 2005 documentary from Turner Classic Movies, written and directed by Time magazine critic Richard Schickel. It's a thoroughly comprehensive survey of '50s sci-fi and its influence on the next generation of film directors, including engaging interviews with George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, Ridley Scott and James Cameron. --Jeff Shannon

Description

A dutiful robot named Robby speaks 188 languages. An underground lair offers evidence of an advanced civilization. But among Altair-4's many wonders, none is greater or more deadly than the human mind. Forbidden Planet is the granddaddy of tomorrow, a pioneering work whose ideas and style would be reverse-engineered into many cinematic space voyages to come. Leslie Nielsen plays the commander who brings his spacecruiser crew to the green-skied world that's home to Dr. Morbius (Walter Pidgeon), his daughter (Anne Francis)...and to a mysterious terror. Featuring sets of extraordinary scale and the first all-electronic musical soundscape in film history, Forbidden Planet is in a movie orbit all its own.

This is a true gem. It makes so little sense that it is beautiful. The plot and reasoning would give Spock a migraine. This movie starts with hansom Lesley Nielson or whatever, going to visit some old creepy guy "living" with his only daughter on some way out planet. Everything from why it was so long to send a ship to investigate the velerapon party's disappearance, to morpheous blowing up the planet didnt make sense... BUT WHO CARES! it has lesley nielson man, really. Laser blasters, cheap rubber robots, beautiful women and drunk cooks. Even contains a brilliant sub plot of the farmers daughter scheme. Lets just say his daughter is like a child in a candy shop when a ship of hunky men land on her porch. If you love top notch B movies that were bumped up a grade or two then this is the goodness here. This movie truly encompasses the rich, chewy, caramel flavor of being a great movie.

5 out of 5 stars this 1956 movie is spectacular!.......2007-06-04

Enjoy the story, special effects and art work. remember this movie was made in 1956 way before most of us were even born. Anne Francis was one gorgeous woman! Buy this movie in HD it looks fantastic. Its a little spooky for kids under 12.

4 out of 5 stars Monsters from the ID.......2007-06-02

Forbidden Planet was the blueprint for Star Trek, Lost in Space, Star Wars, It was so influential that you may watch it, and see a whole new genre that popped up because of it. The movie is the first time the world saw the Robbie Robot character, the same robot give or take a few spare parts from Lost in Space. The crew of the space ship was a complete crew even down to a cook. Laser shooters were used in this movie as well, a Hollywood first. That being said it did have some flaws; the characters were all one dimensional. The story went no where at times. Such as the time where the cook got the robot to synthesize bourbon. Yes some of the plot just seemed like filler. I really got the feeling that Dr. Morbius was based on Captain Nemo from 20000 leagues Jules Verne story. The way how he gave the tour of his world and machinery just seemed so familiar to the 20000 leagues story. Overall this is a fine transfer to DVD, and has quite extras on this DVD package. If you love old science fiction campy films this is a must have.

3 out of 5 stars Why? Oh why?.......2007-05-24

Warner should be ashamed of itself for calling this an Ultimate edition.
They release this on one of the highest capacity media and yet guess what!
The original aspect ratio of the movie is lost!!! That means the movie is clipped on the sides. The original movie is 2.55:1, this so called Ultimate version is 2.4:1.
%5 of the original width is missing. And you call this an ultimate version, HAHA!

5 out of 5 stars A Sci-fi Classic.......2007-05-22

The movie itself is a classic on so many levels...this particular package contains promotional items that the movie buff, at least, will find intriguing. The film itself is surprisingly non-dated considering that it was made in the very early 50's. And Leslie Nielson sometimes actuall acts.

2 out of 5 stars LOOKING FOR CLUES.......2007-07-04

It has to be said up front that THE GIANT BEHEMOTH is BO-RING! It's often more fondly remembered as a better picture than what it was. It's too long for the material, it takes too long to get to the BEHEMOTH, and once we finally get to it - it disappoints. It's too stiff, too flat and too little too late (with effects repeated again and again to pad out the time) for the film when it finally arrives.

Not to say it doesn't have its moments, but they are fleeting at best (and sloppy at worst - check out the bottom left hand corner of your screen when the BEHEMOTH tips the ferry over in the Thames, the neck of BEHEMOTH comes up too far, exposing the naked metal structure underneath). THE GIANT BEHEMOTH is simply a "CSI/MONSTER procedural" film that opens with a strange occurance and then spends the rest of the film searching for, and following the clues to something which is no mystery to anyone who saw the poster, and paid for a ticket. It's a GIANT BEHEMOTH!, we see it, why can't they, and when are they going to get to it? But, having said that, it is interesting to watch what amounts to a mystery of finding, in essence, an 800 pound gorilla in a locked room from a trail of bananas. But, it's not enough to save the picture.

Commentary is included with Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett (effects men both) and while they admire the effort given to creating THE GIANT BEHEMOTH, they are not afraid to slouch back into their seats and question every choice made in making this picture. From it's slow and plodding pace, to their novel take on this film being about the "chain of command" (pushing paperwork and theories upwards to those who have the power to issue orders and (finally) take action. They rightly joke that the only authority not represented in the film is the Queen herself, whose blessing it seems was not sought when it came to radioactive monsters). Being not only effects men, but writers and directors as well, it is funny to listen to them point out all the tricks the creators of THE GIANT BEHEMOTH used to pad the film to make its running time - great stuff, and a fun commentary.

Overall, should you own a copy of THE GIANT BEHEMOTH? If you're a fan (be it mild or die hard) then, yes, your collection would not be complete (and this is coming from someone who dares to own a copy of MONSTER FROM GREEN HELL which is BO-RING! times two). Despite its flaws and plodding pace, there is some love there, and worth the space on your shelf.

Also, for DOCTOR WHO fans... there is one TARDIS in THE GIANT BEHEMOTH, see if you can spot it.

4 out of 5 stars MORE THAN JUST ANOTHER BIG BAD DINOSAUR YARN.......2005-09-03

Basically the story goes like this; a Cornish fisherman is found by his daughter covered with radiation burns. His last "word" to her on the surf is, "behemoth," a citation from the bible which we understand means some kind of monster did this to him. Eventually, England is besieged by this dinosaur which as the film unfolds is evidently the tragic by-product of careless atomic fallout in the Pacific. Ultimately, only a special torpedo fired from a two man sub in London harbor can save London and ultimately the world.

Yes, the story line is rather cliché, but there is more, much more.
Around 1960 I saw "THE GIANT BEHEMOTH" many times and each time I was genuinely enchanted and terrified by it. The premise of a dinosaur suddenly appearing and destroying a major city, London in this case, had been done before and perhaps somewhat better in "THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS. However, this was a new setting, England and ultimately London and this monster spewed radiation at anyone and anything within its sight, a take off on the germ carrying "Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" naturally, but still something new. Also, the Behemoth was invisible to radar so its movements were impossible to track as it traveled mostly underwater. This virtual invisibility caused more than a few fatalities including the venerable Doctor Sampson [Jack MacGowran] who was in a helicopter over the Thames trying to get a closer look at what no one who saw lived to tell about. Of course we had to wait an hour into this 79 minute flick to actually see the monster, but this type of invisible sneaky monster becomes visible in these old creature features incrementally which adds to both the campiness and suspense. Somehow after several failed attempts and desperate situations the monster is vanquished!

BUT .. BUT .. BUT .. As the film ends we hear on the car radio that dead fish are covering the shores of New England just as they had in England just prior to this whole thing beginning! The two scientists having just barely survived this ordeal looked at each other rather ominously, and without uttering a word we knew that they knew, that it was all about to happen again! Maybe we would not be so lucky again!?

For a long time I debated as to whether this film or the "BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS" was superior. I have recently concluded that the stories are about equal though very similar as is the acting, but the superior stop action animation by Ray Harryhausen in "The Beast" gives it a clear edge. Although Eugène Lourié Directed both films [plus Gorgo] and Willis O'Brien did some of the Special Effects for the "Giant Behemoth" there are some major visual weaknesses and much less visual air time in the "Giant Behemoth" for the featured monster. Also as I recall one pretty gritty scene where the Behemoth trashes a ferry and does leave some people dead in the water has not made it to video, having been edited out in the transfer probably because it was deleted from the TV version that played in the 1960's. Too much gore?

Well, whichever film is better is now for you to judge.

If this genre [50's style atomic creature/features] is appealing to you, this film is among the best of its kind. The film transfer is very good for a 46 year old film, and very well worth viewing. Nevertheless a DVD, preferably remastered with the lost ferry scene restored would be greatly appreciated and make a more equitable rival for "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms".

3 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GIANT, RADIOACTIVE MONSTER.......2005-06-01

Giant Behemoth, and isn't that just a bit redundant, was directed by Eugene Lourie who was no stranger when it came to films in this genre having directed the 1953 classic Beast From 20,000 Fathoms and 1958's Colossus of New York and would go on to direct Gorgo in 1961. Clearly the man liked giant monsters. Behemoth is in the latter in terms of quality behind both Gorgo and Beast from 20,000 fathoms. This creature threatens the shores of England not only with his size but also being able to emit radiation to burn people. The stop-motion animation was done by Willis O' Brien who did King Kong and was Ray harryhausen's mentor. The animation itself looks very good as you might expect but the the monster up close looks a little cheap and cheesy. At any rate the best rampages through London, even destroying London Bridge. The movie was on a very low budget and it shows but it's more laughable rather than being a detriment to the film. The performances in the film are adequate, in fact better than you might expect for a movie with such a small budget, so kudos to the mostly British cast. Not as good as many other giant, radiation-created monsters of the 1950's but still worth a view.

3 out of 5 stars Classic film, MISSING KEY SCENE THOUGH!.......2004-04-09

A Great film but shame on Warner Bros. for releasing an edited version! Film quality is good, but the FERRY SCENE where the creature attacks and sinks the ferry is MISSING! Great sequence involving people boarding a ferry for an afternoon ride, when suddenly the creature attacks. Old woman eating, little girl with doll, full ship of people become victims of the beast. Memorable last scene in this sequence showing bodies floating, burned from the creatures radioactive rays, gruesome, yet an important part of the movie, What Happened To This Scene? Too long to blame it on broken film, obviously they used an Edited print! Too bad, hopefully the eventual DVD release will be INTACT! And COMPLETE!

1 out of 5 stars "And The Lord said, Behold now.....The Behemoth".......2004-03-11

One of the last in "the giant monster from sea" genre of the 50's
"Gorgo" officially being the last in 1961 before the japan imports
came in.

The story concerns that of a mysterious radioactive force that
not only seems to wash up mountains of dead fish on england shore
but infects one man's hand & kills another. An investigation by Marine biologist uncovers the radioactivity's source from that of
the titled creature, a huge brontasaur left over from "King Kong"
who proceeds to stomp London and burn all within it's radioactive
range.

Another of my favorites from the creature feature era This film
was probably Willis O'Brien's swan song as his creation stirs the
streets of Merry old in all it's glory one would tend to think on
life had come full circle from his brontosaur of the "Lost world"
made some 30 years earlier,Unlike "The beast from 20,000 fathoms"
This film takes on a darker tone focusing more on the science and
the aftermath of radiation (showing burn victims, fishing market
slumps etc)& in addition a memorable score. Gene Evans in one of
his few goodguy roles accompanies Andre Morell as Prof. Bigford

Special effect range from a wonderful entrance by the creature
on the docks to the quickie shot of the beast's wooden head on a
makeshift raft. You wouldn't see this sequence on warner bros.vhs
version of The giant behemoth though. I wouldn't believe that the
company responsible for so many classics like "The African Queen"
& "The Roaring 20's" would be too cheap to use a 90 min tape. The
picture quality is great but I hope the dvd will be more complete

Amazon.com essential video

David Cronenberg's 1986 remake of the science fiction classic about a scientist who accidentally swaps body parts with a fly is both smart and terrifying: an allegory for the awful processes of slow death and a monster movie with a tragic spin. Jeff Goldblum gives a masterful performance as a sweet, nerdy scientist whose romance with a writer (Geena Davis) makes him more fully alive. Next thing you know, a tiny oversight in an experiment causes him to transmogrify, gradually, into something more like an insect than a human. This is Cronenberg (Scanners, Videodrome) country, so expect The Fly to be a gross-out, but in the way that disease corrupts the body and can make a loved one unrecognizable on every level. This is one of Cronenberg's best films, and certainly one of the important movies of the 1980s. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars One of the few times a remake tops the original.......2007-07-05

David Cronenberg's remake of The Fly is one of the incredibly few times a remake tops the original in every way, shape, or form; and remains one of the absolute best films of Cronenberg's career. Jeff Goldblum stars as a brilliant scientist whose experiment goes awfully awry, and soon enough he is transforming into a an insect-like creature; much to the horror of an investigative journalist (Geena Davis) who he has been romancing, and who is also carrying his child. Like many of Cronenberg's other films, The Fly is a grisly allegory disguised as a horror film that's hard not to forget. Goldblum gives what very well may be the best performance of his entire career, and David is excellent as well. The makeup effects are brilliantly realized as well, with plenty of skin crawling and horiffic moments peppered throughout the film. This Two-Disc Special Edition features an excellent commentary from Cronenberg, as well as various production diaries as well that are quite insightful. All in all, The Fly remains one of the best films Cronenberg has ever crafted, and one of the most visionary films to come from the genre as well as one of the few times a remake tops the original in every way, shape, or form.

I have always stated that I hate remakes of classic's.
Well that really is not the case,I should say I hate
a remake of a movie that was already perfect! John
(HALLOWEEN-THE THING)Carpenter said it best."IF YOU DID
IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME,WHY FIX SOMETHING THAT IS NOT BROKE!"
And believe me Amazon viewers when I first heard him say
that I have not let it leave me since. Now for 2000-2007
we are in a big time SLUMP for movies.Yes there are those
rare exceptions that we get gold, but again for 2000-2007
it is so far and inbetween, which leads me to this JEWEL!!
I was looking at my MASS HORROR coll. And saw THE FLY! I
said hhhmmm.Have not seen this one in awhile so slapped
it on.This is a remake that is so far supior to the ORIG.
I wont even go there for I will be lynched by every
die hard 50's sci/fi fanatic,which is a good point
is The Fly sci/fi or horror? HORRROR BABY,PURE HORROR
Jeff Goldblum gives his best performance(he was so good
and ment for the part, like Sir Perkins in the immortal
PSYCHO)in this as Seth Brundle who in ways is like a
male version of CARRIE WHITE.He wears diff.suits but
all the same style,he does not go out with friends?

directs(in my opinion)his MASTERPIECE of the macabe!
His directing in this is awsome for we watch a man

surpass MICROSOFT,and we see his FALL!You really
feel for Jeff especially when he is deteriorating
slowly, his acting was topnotch him breathing heavy
and muttering the words"NO!..no" when he ask Geena

the Oscars did not take notice of his performance

5 out of 5 stars Never Let a Fly Accompany You Into a Teleporting Cabin. .......2007-05-04

"The Fly" (1986) is a remake of a famous horror-sci-fi of the same title from the fifties, amazingly it is a far better movie than the original one.

The story is as follows: a scientist is in the last stages of developing a revolutionary transport media: a teleporter.
Trying to impress a young & beautiful journalist he commits the indiscretion to show her his prototype.
To amend his slip Dr. Brundle recruits Veronica to write and film a diary of his investigation. Working together evolves into romance.

The prototype has a bug: it only teleportate inanimate things. When animate subjects are entered a mass of blood & bones appears at the receiving cabin. So Dr. Brundle after an illuminating dialog with Veronica fix the software bug and is ready to send an ape from one cabin to the other.
Unfortunately he gets jealous and drunk and instead of sending the baboon he performs the experiment personally with the unnoticed & unwelcome company of a fly.
Well.... You know how computers are... Dr. Brundle and the Fly get mixed (with subtlety, not as in the original version when a whole head and hand were exchanged between scientific and insect).
From here onwards a parallel with Kafka's "Metamorphosis" starts, until the end, providing the most fearful scenes to the movie.

Musical score in charge of Howard Shore is on a higher level than usual scores for this kind of films. That is not a surprise now, knowing how many awards Shore has earned.
Another plus of the film are the special effects done by Louis Craig and Ted Ross. Craig was nominated to a BAFTA award for this work.

Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Brundle and Geena Davis as Veronica perform over par rendering a credible mask to their characters.

This film is a very good one for sci-fi & horror film fans.

4 out of 5 stars David Cronenberg: "Everybody's a mad scientist, and life is their lab....".......2007-04-29

"Be afraid...be very afraid!"

David Cronenberg's "The Fly"(1986) - is a remake of the 1950s movie of the same title in which a scientist is turned into a half- man, half-fly due to a fatal defect in the matter transmitter. In his remake, Cronenberg piles the eye -popping, jaw-dropping, and stomach-churning effects on the top of each other as the body of the unfortunate, mad but brilliant scientist (Jeff Goldblum in the role of his life -I've never seen him better) is hideously distorted and he is losing his humanity turning into the insect of the title. "The Fly" is a truly visceral experience which the director himself sees as a metaphor for aging: "In time we all turn into monsters". This very impressive movie is a classic of a "the fatal error of a mad scientist" sub-genre, "Everybody's a mad scientist, and life is their lab. We're all trying to experiment to find a way to live, to solve problems, to fend off madness and chaos" (David Cronenberg).

4 out of 5 stars Be afraid, be very afraid..........2007-03-06

Seth Brundle (Goldblum) is a scientist who might just have invented the world's first teleporter. The only bug (pun intended) is the fact that it doesn't handle flesh and live teleportations. Ronnie (Geena Davis) is a writer for Particle magazine and will stay by his side, documenting via video his attempts to break through. Upon successfully teleporting a baboon, Seth gets cocky and decides to try and teleport himself; a fly slips into the pod while he teleports. At first, Seth finds newfound strength and agility, but pretty soon he's changing for the worst.

This is one of Cronenberg's best films, masterfully directed and executed. It's also Jeff Goldblum's finest performance to date! Not content on doing a mere remake (the original Fly (1958) is a much different film starring Vincent Price), Cronenberg brings this film to the next level--literally. It's filled with deep human drama and let's not forget the award-winning special effects! Top notch effects contribute in putting this film ahead of the pack of other mid-eighties sci-fi/horror flicks. The film overall has aged well (it's already been twenty years) if not for the eighties fashion statements.

I'm having a hard time figuring out which it is more; a sci-fi or a horror film? I guess it's a fusion of both (I gotta stop these bad puns!). Whether you see it for the first time or revisit it, Cronenberg's The Fly is a great gory, character-driven, profoundly human film. The second disc is chock full of special features: various documentaries and a making-of, screenplays, the original short story on which the original film is based, trailers for all the Fly movies ever made, deleted scenes, and much much more. A must have for any Cronenberg fan.

3 out of 5 stars A classical monster reunion.......2007-06-25

All the greats, Dracula, Frankenstein, Werewolve, even Jecke & Hyde make an appearance in this film. The movie is dark and sometimes the plot seems a little thing, or the director introduced something but never returned to it. The movie is good basic entertainment, if you are looking for a high-grade movie or classic, you should probably look elsewhere. This was great for entertainment, but I didn't add it to my library.

3 out of 5 stars Dracula, Frankenstein, Werewolf, Oh My!.......2007-06-14

A great idea... that has a little too many monsters to track. The movie is filled with lots of characters, maybe too many. But Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale make a good team! The fight seen at the end is a dizzying visual feast! I liked it, but others got a headache! A good movie, definetly worth a viewing! Recommend renting first to ensure it is to your taste before you buy.

5 out of 5 stars HOLY CRAP!.......2007-06-13

The picture is gosh darn amazing... very friggin' detail and colors... I love the opening part... Black and White. It's very surreal looking and so detail for black and white. And the special effect are amazing for its time and still do good for now. I forgot how violence this film are for a PG-13 film, its should be PG-15... anyway, HD-DVD is indeed amazing HD format out right now!

1 out of 5 stars Van Hell Stink.......2007-06-08

Absolutely ghastly. So bad - if I were a werewolf - I'd be hacking hairballs for days on end. I wanted to like this movie - I really did - because I think Hugh Jackman is a wonderful actor - but even Jackman - talented as he is - can't save this mess. It looks like the director was writing the script as he went - throwing ever black and white monster movie, and Hammer House of Horror flick, at the wall just to see what would stick. Thus you have a convoluted plot involving Dracula, Werewolves and even Dr. Frankenstein's monster.

Some movies take a while to get going - I knew this one was going to stink up the joint within the first ten minutes - and I'm probably being generous there. This movie never gets going. There are idiotic plot lines involving Dracula getting it on with his undead brides - is anybody gagging yet. The undead brides look like a trio of jiggle queens - B rated porn stars who look like they are ready for a slumber party - and none of them can act - and really - Dracula and his brides making babies? So what, even undead women have biological clocks ticking away now? If I was Dracula's bride - I can think of much more entertaining ways to spend my immortality - than being pregnant with his undead kid.

So we see Van Helstink channeling Indiana Jones, swinging from ropes and crashing through windows. This movie is unintentionally funny - and even then not in a good way. Then he gets bit by a werewolf and we get to watch him morph- and even this was a collosal disappointment. Instead of employing make up, special effects, etc. and actually creating a realistic werewolf - they just used computers and puked up a CGI fight between an animated werewolf and an animated flying, dracula batlike - whatever. By the time the big smackdown between VanHelstink and Dracula was ready to begin I had completely zoned out of this movie.

The only reason I even stuck around for the end was because I had already wasted the money - thank god it was at least matinee prices or else I would have really been disgusted. So the only thrill I got - all two seconds of it - was watching Hugh Jackman rip his shirt off and I like shirtless Hugh. Save your money - do not rent this, do not buy it. And the guy who wrote the script probably deserves a silver bullet AND a stake through the heart to make sure they never produce anything this bad again.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent story.......2007-05-18

On the DVDs
Nestled in a metal collector's box decorated with variations of original promo art, the colorfully designed 2-disc 50th Anniversary Edition of Forbidden Planet (also available separately) comes in a slip-covered fold-out case accompanied by a pocket of 17 miniature lobby card reproductions (eight for Forbidden Planet, nine for the 1957 companion movie The Invisible Boy). On disc 1, Forbidden Planet is presented with a new digital transfer from restored picture and audio elements, with soundtrack remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1, offering considerable improvement over the film's previous DVD release. A selection of deleted scenes were taken from a faded and scratchy 16-millimeter "work print" that had originally been viewed by composers Louis and Bebe Barron as they were creating the film's unique electronic score; they consist of full or partial scenes cut from the final film--mostly for good reason, but collectors (and those who first saw this rare material on the original Criterion Collection laserdisc) will welcome their inclusion here. The "lost footage" is crude special-effects test footage, again primarily of interest to sci-fi historians and aficionados. 28, 1958. Disc 1 also includes a gallery of seven science-fiction movie trailers dating from 1953's The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms to 1960's The Time Machine.

Also included are three documentaries, all of them very good to excellent: In addition to reuniting the surviving cast members of the '56 classic (including Leslie Nielsen, Anne Francis, Richard Anderson, Warren Stevens, and Earl Holliman), "Amazing! Exploring the Far Reaches of Forbidden Planet" is an appreciative tribute to Forbidden Planet with some of Hollywood's foremost sci-fi fans including special effects masters Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett, SF movie expert Bill Warren, and others. "Robby the Robot: Engineering a Sci-Fi Icon" is a featurette about the robot's design, creation, and pop-cultural history, featuring original "Robby" designer Robert Kinoshita, Bill Malone (current owner of the original Robby), and Fred "The Robot Man" Barton, a lifelong robot fanatic builds fully authorized, full-scale Robby replicas for sci-fi fans with deep pockets.

Last but certainly not least, the Ultimate Collector's Edition of Forbidden Planet comes with a highly detailed three-inch tall die-cast replica of Robby the Robot. Should you display it proudly on your toy shelf or keep it in its cellophane wrapper? That's a tough call for devoted Robby fans... so you'll just have to decide for yourself! --Jeff Shannon

Inspired by the controversial E.C. Comics of the 1950s--which also provided the title and inspiration for the popular Tales from the Crypt TV series--director George Romero and screenwriter Stephen King serve up five delightfully frightful stories. Utilizing comic-book panels, animated segues, and exaggerated lighting and camera angles, Romero and cinematographer Michael Gornick come very close to replicating a horror comic in film format. The results mix fine acting with the morbid sense of humor and irony that made the E.C. books so popular in their heyday. Actors such as Leslie Nielsen, Hal Holbrook, Ted Danson, Adrienne Barbeau, Ed Harris, E.G. Marshall, and even King appear in the stories, which include tales of a sinister father's day celebration, a mysterious meteor, seaweed-draped zombies, a monster in a crate, and a cockroach-phobic millionaire. Fiendishly fun fare from one of horror's most famous directors. --Bryan Reesman

Description

Five spooky stories, written by Stephen King, are shown in a format based on the popular horror comics of the 1950's.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MOVIE WITH A PLAYFULL SPIRIT!!!.......2007-06-09

I have been watching horror movies for a long time, and I remember when this movie was released(my mother took me to the movies to see it; I still don't know whether that was a good or bad thing?!?!). Years had gone by and one day I saw this movie at the video store and just had to have it. This movie is graphic but very playfull(comicbook roots). Ther are five storys: First, A murdered father showing up for Father's Day. Second, A man (Steven King) discovers a meteor(intresting fact, This story is based on H.P.Lovecraft's "The Colour Out Of Space")Third, A man seeking revenge on his wife and lover. Fourth, A janitor and a college proffesor open a crate that the janitor found to a grizzly consequence. Last, and greatest, A hypocondriac in a germ free apartment gets an unwelcome visit by several thousand little unwanted guests. If you like horror comedy then check out this classic. well worth the time.

5 out of 5 stars "Where's my cake!?!"........2007-03-31

This was just a great and fun anthology horror film from George A. Romero, it was also writen by Stephen King so you probably know what to expect when you have these two geniuses of the horror genre together this was deffinetely a high quality film. Creepshow was inspired by the horror comics Tales from the crypt from EC comics which were released during the 50's and were quite unique and a bit controversial during that period, these five tales were quite good and alot of fun to watch especially on halloween but still you could watch them at any time, during the beginning the title sequence is shot like a comic book and has some nice animation and then the live scenes happen where a bratty kid is playing around with his horror comic book then his dad finds out and gets angry and upset and well the story resolves at the end of the film when the boy gets his revenge, the boy was played by Stephen King's son so watch out for some bad acting these stories are not really scary but you wouldn't mind since they're alot of fun to watch anyway here is a short summary of these five stories:-

Father's day involves a family reunion, an ashtray and an unnatural desire for cake. Watch out for Ed Harris's corny dance sequence and the zombie that rises from his grave, very good storyline about revenge and retribution "Where's my cake!?!".

The lonsome death of Jordy Verill features Stephen King as a dorky and dumb farmer who discovers a meteor with all sorts of growth and fungus and decides to touch it, not a good idea since now hes about to turn into a plant. This is one of the worst storylines but the good thing is its short and doesn't take to long, there were some funny parts though.

Something to tide you over tells of Leslie Nielson's interesting plan of vengeance against the man who stole his wife played by Ted Danson. This was a very good and suspensfull storyline that will keep you on the edge of your seat as Leslie buries Ted Danson's character in the sand.

The crate was one of my favorites and it has some wonderful special fx done by Tom Savini who made the effects for the monster in the crate that looks like its from another world and is quite creepy, the story is about a college professor who has a very loud and obnoxious wife played by Adrienne Barbeau who keeps embarissing her husband infront of everyone untill an opritunity comes along to get rid of her, this story has alot of twisted dark humor in it and some gore.

They're creeping up on you is about a rich and greedy eccentric executive type who has to deal with a roach problem, this is a very nice storyline that wraps up everything. Overall the film was a classic 80's horror film and is the best George Romero flick since he was more known for his living dead trillogy this film also showed that he could do other things beside that, great stuff and highly recommended. Make sure that you also watch the sequal along with this back to back, the best storyline IMO was The raft where the college kids get eaten by a creature in the lake.

4 out of 5 stars You will have nightmares........2007-03-10

This film is essentially 4 stories woven to create equally frightening tales in true comic book format. Stephen King's brilliance shines in all four tales of murder, tragedy, love, betrayel and desperation. "Father's Day" still gives me the creeps. "Meteor Man" will leave you questioning yourself. "The Sea Lovers" will frighten you. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars It's Father's Day..............2007-01-08

I grew up watching this movie whenever and wherever I could. I like to think that the writers of Creepshow educated me in how to handle life's many problems and keep a smile on my face while doing so. I was amazed at how the remains of Nathan Grantham, the murdered patriarch of the Grantham family exacted revenge on his ungrateful family and he even managed to get his Father's Day cake in the end. And for all of you people on the old ball and chain, look at the way in which Henry dealt with Wilma, his horrifying wife. This just goes to show us that sometimes, seeminlgy awful situations can work in our favor.

5 out of 5 stars The most fun you'll ever have being scared!.......2007-01-07

Sometime after doing my review of Creepshow 2 did I realize I didn't review the original. And not wanting to disappoint my (2) fans, I have decide to put the disk back in, and give you my in depth opinion...George A. Romero("Dawn of the Dead"," Day of the Dead"," Martin")after huge success with "Dawn of the Dead" directed his another masterpiece-an anthology of five short stories called "Creepshow". The script was written by Stephen King, and the special effects were made by F/X wizard Tom Savini("Martin","Maniac","The Prowler"). The first story "Father's Day" is so-so-nothing special, but the zombie looks terrific; the second story "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verril" is the funniest, Stephen King steals the show as a Jordy,a goofy farmer, who finds a strange meteor; the third story "Something To Tide You Over" is my favorite-it's ghastly, creepy, funny and a little bit disturbing, again great make-up of the drowned zombies; the fourth story "The Crate" is the longest and goriest-there's a lot of suspense and plenty of gore mixed with black humour. Finally we are getting to the last story "Creeping Up On You"-an enjoyable story about cockroaches with some rather gross special effects. Overall I must say that I love "Creepshow"-surely they don't make them like this anymore. So, check it out! In fact, I will hold my breath as you do. Because I can hold my breath for a long, long time.

When the Hulk gets angry, his movie gets good, so you wish he'd get angry more often. Accepting this challenge after the triumphant Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, director Ang Lee has created an ambitious film, based on the Marvel comic created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, that succeeds as a cautionary tale about mad science and traumatized children coping with legacies of pain. That's the Hulk's problem: After accidental exposure to gamma radiation, scientist Bruce Banner (Eric Bana) turns into the huge, green, and indestructible Hulk when provoked, and repressed childhood memories fuel his fury. Hobbled by the obligatory "origin story" (to acquaint neophytes with the character's Jekyll-and-Hyde-ish fate), there's room for little else in a sluggish film that struggles to reconcile Lee's stylistic flair (evident in his visual interpretation of comic-book technique) with the razzle-dazzle of a megabudget franchise. What's good is good (Jennifer Connelly essentially echoes her role from A Beautiful Mind, and Nick Nolte is righteously tormented as Banner's father), but the movie's schizoid intentions remain largely unclear. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Can HD DVD picture quality get any better than this?.......2007-06-15

Though the movie did not gross as much as Universal had originally hoped, this HD DVD is still a winner! Even if you do not appreciate the film, it makes wonderful HD DVD demo material! Personally I liked the film, but I give the film itself a 7, story is 6.5, the picture is a 10 and the sound is a 9. Ang Lee (the director) did a good job using multiple scenes on a single screen using comic book templates! I loved to see Hulk Smash all the tanks in the dessert in pure HD! Batman can't be the only Superhero in you HD DVD collection and Hulk is a lot better than Superman!

1 out of 5 stars Cure for insomnia.......2007-06-07

I was really looking forward to this movie. I love the Hulk and after the success of X-Men and Spiderman (two excellent comic book movies) I was begining to think Marvel wouldn't let them put out a bad movie. Well, they did. It drags, the plot is incoherent, it just plain sucks. It may be the perfect cure for insomnia...

4 out of 5 stars You won't like me when I'm mad.......2007-05-30

The hulk was decent to good movie. I didn't like how they split the Screen in so many scenes. There is a very catchy story line and a very cute girl. I'd really give it a a 3.5. Sorry I have to keep it short.Spider-Man / Spider-Man 2 (Full Screen Special Editions)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie.......2007-05-24

hulk is definitely one of the most under rated films of the past few years. dont watch it expecting a summer action movie. rather expect to see a intelligent, well written film that draws on some of the better human aspects of the comic. for this reason, the hulk does not get as much screen time as the other characters. but when he does appear, its a real treat! in hindsight, it shouldnt have been marketed as a summer blockbuster.

Love the classic monsters Frankenstein, the Mummy, Dr. Jekyll, the Creature, Dracula, the Werewolf, and the Invisible Man? They're all here in this animated, 90-minute video--and so are the vocal talents of Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller. After discovering the secret of destruction, Baron von Frankenstein is retiring as head of the World Wide Organization of Monsters. He's handpicked his mortal nephew Felix to be his successor, and his fellow monsters are less than pleased. Even though Felix politely declines to carry on this family tradition, the monsters band together and double-cross one another in comic attempts to expel Felix from the group.

The "Rankin/Bass Animagic process" of using stop-motion photography with three-dimensional figures makes this video a visual feast for animation buffs, but it is outdated compared to modern animation techniques. Humorous details, like the count looking into a mirror to comb his hair and seeing only his comb reflected, permeate the video and will have viewers chuckling out loud and on alert for potential missed laughs. This video is best for children from about 5 to 12 years old or adults who want to reminisce over a movie viewed in their childhood. --Tami Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Monster Party stands the test of time.......2007-05-13

I remember this movie as a favourite from my childhood. Whenever it appeared on tv - I was always ready to watch it. Even though that was a good few years ago, Mad Monster Party stands the test of time. The story is simple -Monsters gather to party, bad verses badder and yet love wins in the end. The humour is quirky, the songs catchy. The characters are the original group of monsters that we all know and were scared of. When you think that this was made in the 60's the animation is brilliant. You can see at times where Tim Burton may have got some of his ideas. The colour seems to have been inhanced - all for the better. I knew this movie was a favourite and having not see it for many years pleased to say it remains one.

5 out of 5 stars BIG BOOBED PUPPET/ SKELETON ROCK BAND/ I THINK YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO...........2007-05-11

Corny as hell, but I still like it. I bought this movie used from Amazon a while back, for my kid. I had no idea what I was getting into. This thing has a bizarre plotline, that leads our protagonist (a geeky-Jimmy Stewart-esque kinda guy) onto an island inhabited by his uncle Boris (rightly voiced by Boris Karloff) and an army of monsters that he created.
Uncle Boris wants to hand the island and all of it's secrets over to his nephew, but the monsters are not to thrilled. Mainly Francesca (quite possibly the sexiest puppet I've ever seen). She believes that she should be the rightful heir of the island, so she seduces Dracula into helping her destroy the nephew.
Dracula screws everything up, so Francesca decides to settle things herself (biggest [...] I've ever seen on a puppet by the way).. only her plan is foiled when nephew smacks her in the face, and somehow causes her to instantly fall madly in love with him (they make out like every five minutes from here on..) Once the monsters discover whats going on with the two, they decide to get even with both.
I won't spoil the ending, but this is a cool little movie to watch with the kids on a rainy day. The best is when a rock band of skeletons pop out of nowhere and play a song called Dance The Mummy.. but the campy, sixties take on a slew of classic monsters, portrayed as puppets is all gravy. Rankin/Bass the guys that brought you Rudolph and all of those other X-mas shows from the sixties masterminded this gem.

2 out of 5 stars Some Nostalgia Is Best Left In The Past.......2007-04-02

In theory, MAD MONSTER PARTY has everything required to blast you into your childhood past: the voices of Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller; characters that are riffs on Universal horror classics; and animated by Rankin-Bass, which created such memorable holiday television specials as Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer. But at ninety minutes, MAD MONSTER PARTY is much, much too long for the very slight story it has to tell.

The story, as such: Dr. Frankenstein, who earlier discovered the secret of life, has now discovered the secret of destruction. He invites all the monsters under his control to his remote island, there to announce his discovery--and his retirement and plans to pass his secrets onto his klutzy and inept nephew. The monsters are not pleased and decide to off said nephew and use the new discovery to suit themselves.

The premise is okay, but the actual result is remarkably tedious. The script is dull, the occasional song atrocious. The pace is very, very slow. The character designs are uninspired. As for the famed Rankin-Bass animation... let us be generous here and say that in this instance it has not dated very well. This is essentially stop-motion animation, the same process so memorably used by Ray Harryhouser in such memorable films as THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD and Tim Burton in THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS--but without the same budgets.

If you are considering a purchase for "family film purposes," you can do a lot better than this. If you yourself recall the movie fondly from your childhood, do yourself a favor and don't return to it, for you will almost certainly be disappointed; some nostalgia really is better left in the past. The only people likely to find the film of interest are hardcore collectors of stop-motion animation--and even then the interest is more likely to be technical than anything else. Such fans excepted, not recommended.

Universal Pictures made a great deal of money from its monster movies in the 1930s. In the early '40s, the burlesque team of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello kept the studio's coffers full. When the two franchises were combined in 1948, the result was another windfall--despite the apparent oil-and-water mix of subject matter. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein was the first of these summit meetings, although the title is a misnomer. Actually, Bud and Lou bump into most of the Universal heavy-hitters, including Count Dracula (played by Béla Lugosi himself), the Wolfman (Lon Chaney Jr.), and the Frankenstein monster (veteran monster Glenn Strange). There's even a token appearance by the Invisible Man, whose disembodied voice is recognizable as that of Vincent Price. Sure enough, the film is funny, especially since it gives the portly Costello multiple opportunities to do his wide-eyed, quivering scaredy-cat routine. Audiences ate it up, and in future installments Bud and Lou would run into Boris Karloff, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the Invisible Man, and the Mummy. But the first was the best. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST HORROR COMEDY EVER! .......2007-06-29

It's funny how most of the Abbott & Costello horror comedies are not very good, yet this one works so well! This is a classic that I watch on Halloween just to prime me up for some great horror films.

5 out of 5 stars Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein.......2007-06-21

Timeless classic blends comedy and monster movie, resulting in something spooky enough to excite kids without causing sleepless nights. The best A&C vehicle by far, its great to have Lugosi and Chaney on hand. A fast, funny scarefest that viewers of all ages should love.

5 out of 5 stars True Classic!.......2007-06-13

Theres nothing that beats a movie that fits with famous movie monsters and this has it all. Very well known names in the movie that brings back great memories. A true gem to Abbott and Costello fans. Buy this cause they rarely play it on TV anymore. Highly Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Exorcising the Monsters.......2007-05-15

This film assumes a knowledge of the Hollywood horror films it satirizes, else it may not be appreciated. In London Larry Talbot tries to call America. Wilbur has a problem unloading a wagon, but Sandra likes him. A phone call warns him about two crates shipped to the House of Horror. Mr. McDougall got them dirt cheap from Europe - the remains of Dracula and Frankenstein! Chick and Wilbur must deliver the crates personally. Their banter is full of jokes. "Does Dracula know it?" the comedy comes from knowing what Chick and Wilbur can't see. The missing contents lead to an investigation by McDougall. We learn more about Sandra and her interest in Wilbur; its business not pleasure. Larry Talbot arrives, and asks to be locked in his room.

Wilbur and Chick arrive at the castle. They begin to search for the missing monsters, and Wilbur discovers them. But they disappear when Chick arrives. They all show up for the masquerade party. The full moon affects Larry Talbot. There is much comic action and confusion. [The special effects have advanced since the 1930s.] Chick and Larry arrive to rescue Joan and Wilbur. But Larry is affected by the full moon. There is a comic chase down the hall, and at the party. At the end the monsters are eliminated, at least as far as we can see. There is a clue to their next film.

The horror films of the 1930s reflect the concerns of people. "Frankenstein" represents the man-made horror of the Great Depression, almost beyond control. "Dracula" represents the threat of a powerful foreign ruler. World War Two saw an end to those fears. The horror films of the 1950s represented new fears, about the environment or society. "Them" or "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" are of one type. "The Invasion of the Body Snatchers" represent unnameable fear. "On the Beach" was the ultimate horror film, one that may have prevented a nuclear calamity.
