By following up their debut thriller Bound with the 1999 box-office smash The Matrix, the codirecting Wachowski brothers--Andy and Larry--annihilated any suggestion of a sophomore jinx, crafting one of the most exhilarating sci-fi/action movies of the 1990s. Set in the not too distant future in an insipid, characterless city, we find a young man named Neo (Keanu Reeves). A software techie by day and a computer hacker by night, he sits alone at home by his monitor, waiting for a sign, a signal--from what or whom he doesn't know--until one night, a mysterious woman named Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) seeks him out and introduces him to that faceless character he has been waiting for: Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). A messiah of sorts, Morpheus presents Neo with the truth about his world by shedding light on the dark secrets that have troubled him for so long: "You've felt it your entire life, that there's something wrong with the world. You don't know what it is, but it's there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad." Ultimately, Morpheus illustrates to Neo what the Matrix is--a reality beyond reality that controls all of their lives, in a way that Neo can barely comprehend.

Neo thus embarks on an adventure that is both terrifying and enthralling. Pitted against an enemy that transcends human concepts of evil, Morpheus and his team must train Neo to believe that he is the chosen champion of their fight. With mind-boggling, technically innovative special effects and a thought-provoking script that owes a debt of inspiration to the legacy of cyberpunk fiction, this is much more than an out-and-out action yarn; it's a thinking man's journey into the realm of futuristic fantasy, a dreamscape full of eye candy that will satisfy sci-fi, kung fu, action, and adventure fans alike. Although the film is headlined by Reeves and Fishburne--who both turn in fine performances--much of the fun and excitement should be attributed to Moss, who flawlessly mixes vulnerability with immense strength, making other contemporary female heroines look timid by comparison. And if we were going to cast a vote for most dastardly movie villain of 1999, it would have to go to Hugo Weaving, who plays the feckless, semipsychotic Agent Smith with panache and edginess. As the film's box-office profits soared, the Wachowski brothers announced that The Matrix is merely the first chapter in a cinematically dazzling franchise--a chapter that is arguably superior to the other sci-fi smash of 1999 (you know... the one starring Jar Jar Binks). --Jeremy Storey

5 out of 5 stars "i'm going to enjoy watching you die, mr. anderson.".......2007-06-15

It is the movie that set new standards in the world of movie making. Terminator 2 did it in 1990, and the Matrix took it to the next level in 1999. Other films, such as Romeo Must Die, have tried to duplicate these wonderful effects, but have come up short. Not only is the Matrix a first in superb visuals and animation, but it is a dang good movie too.

If you haven't heard of the Matrix yet, this first installment explains everything. It might take a few viewings to understand every nook, but once it all fits into place it is a great theme, "is this world we live in real, or not, and what exactly defines "real". The Matrix will explain it all, in the eyes of Neo (aka Mr. Anderson as Agen Smith likes to call him), from his simple days as another man in the Matrix to becoming unplugged and becoming "The One".

The story is great. The characters are top notch and the visuals are to die for. Many even place this movie into martial arts category, as each fight scene displays true martial arts choreogrpahy intertwined with visual effects of animation. Truly though, the Matrix is a sc-fi action blast. Although there is the R rating, I have seen PG-13 films with more questionable content that this film. Most teenagers and above should be suitable for this.

Arguably the best in the trilogy, The Matrix is in my opinion that compared to the other two. Be sure to watch Reloaded and Revolutions, though not as good in story, the visuals are simplying mind-blowing, only expanding on what the first installment created.

4 out of 5 stars Beginning of a revolution.......2007-06-08

If one could rate a movie's greatness by how many other copy it, then the Matrix has to be one of the greatest movies of all time. This movie was the first US film to use "bullet time" whereby entire action scenes are filmed in slow motion slow enough to see bullets move across the air. This is also the first movie to copy martial arts fighting scenes from Chinese films, and incorporate them into an American film in totality, including freeze frame shots, 360 pans, and really high jump kicks. Combined with the great storyline, dialogue and casting, this movie became a trendsetter. Other movies like LOTR, Shrek, and even Animal Channel specials have copied this style of action films.

The storyline itself is incredible, probably the best plot of any movie released in 1999. But it is not wholly original. Earlier in the decade the sci-fi movie Dark City was released, and back-to-back viewings of both movies reveal many similarities in the story, setting and even cinematography.

The casting was great. This is by far the best movie for Keanu Reeves. This movie was also groundbreaking in having a black actor and black actress in key protagonist roles; these being Morpheus and the Oracle. The casting of Carrie-Ann Moss was also great. A younger woman would not have lent the emotional weight as Ms. Moss. The use of a sexier woman might have reminded fans more of the Pamela Anderson bomb, Barbed Wire. Carrie-Ann Moss was the perfect actress to play Trinity; athletic but not buff, attractive but not bombshell, mature but not old. Interestingly, the movie's basis on science and computers has kicked of a fashion trend in US cities with large populations of young East Asian women in the high tech fields such as Seattle or San Francisco. Walking through these downtowns one can notice the large number of hot Asian chics dressed in black in the style of Trinity.

This DVD is fairly simple; the same movie as in theaters, some special features but no extended scenes. The movie is a great watch, but since it shows so often on TV, I would not recommend buying this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars One of ten top ten films ever made.......2007-06-06

I mean how can you not list Matrix as one of the most extraordinary films in history, with one of the most intriguing storylines to ever hit the big screen. How utterly original, how truly amazed I am every single time I watch it. It is a movie that can sit in the background of a party, on multiple tv's and everyone is in tune with it. Visually brilliant and the sound is bar none. If you couldn't follow this one, or could not keep up with the fast paced and intricate plot, well then do not say you are too 'American' for a film such as this like the reviewer below. How shallow is that; instead go rent Fantastic Four, that should be trite, unmoving and American enough for you.

Matrix is one of the greatest, and always will be. Stunning, rich in depth and suspense, totally engrossing and mesmorizing.

5 out of 5 stars Comics, Comparative Religion and Kung Fu.......2007-06-05

Just about perfect, as long as you don't think too much.

In a world of nuclear ruin, I imagine your average intelligent computer could probably find a better fuel cell than a slightly warm, always hungry, constantly defecating comatose human, for whom they have to invent an elaborate mind warp, so as to, what, keep all their blood-slaves happy?

But Besides That...perfect in all regards.

With technical and martial arts grace, thanks to a long line of predecessors.

See the "Once Upon a Time in China" series (especially the first, with dvd commentary) for a great introduction to wire-fighting.

Next, pick up a concise guide to Hindu philosophy, a compendium of Dark Horse comics, and a pair of anti-gravity boots, and you've got it.

And Keanu? I'm tempted to say that making ineffectual look superhuman is the single greatest special effect, but that would undermine the great artistry that is painted all over the digital cells.

In the `nuked-world' scenes, the film looks like it was photographed in an Eastern European sewer system, and the actors let you feel the grit and mold.

A very good action movie, plus a high school treatise on comparative religion....who could ask for more?

1 out of 5 stars Too complicated.......2007-05-11

Maybe I'm too american and simple minded, but the plot twists and turns too often in the series. You have to remember every little plot twist or risk not understanding the next ones in the series.

After scoring popular hits with When Worlds Collide and The War of the Worlds, special-effects pioneer George Pal returned to the visionary fiction of H.G. Wells to produce and direct this science-fiction classic from 1960. Wells's imaginative tale of time travel was published in 1895 and the movie is set in approximately the same period with Rod Taylor as a scientist whose magnificent time machine allows him to leap backward and forward in the annals of history. His adventures take him far into the future, where a meek and ineffectual race known as the Eloi have been forced to hide from the brutally monstrous Morlocks. As Taylor tests his daring invention, Oscar-winning special effects show us what the scientist sees: a cavalcade of sights and sounds as he races through time at varying speeds, from lava flows of ancient earth to the rise and fall of a towering future metropolis.

The movie's charm lies in its Victorian setting and the awe and wonder that carries over from Wells's classic story. The pioneering spirit of the movie is still enthralling, but it gets a bit silly when Taylor turns into a stock hero, rescuing a beautiful blonde Eloi (Yvette Mimieux) and battling with the chubby green Morlocks whose light-bulb eyes blink out when they die. Although it's quaint when compared to the special-effects marvels of the digital age, the movie's still highly entertaining and filled with a timeless sense of wonder. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome!!!.......2007-04-08

George Pal's The Time Machine is one of THE great sci fi films. Forget the dumb remake, which totally botches the story. This is about as good as it gets fellow sci fi fans. In this film, a Victorian gentleman visits a hippy commune in the distant future and teaches them how to be men. (Of course that's not the real synopsis, but it fits!)I will not here start expounding on all that's great about this film. There's too much and the review would be too long. I will however say that this is one of my favorite films, has one of my favorite soundtracks, and has one of my all-time favorite main characters/protagonists. Too many sci fi films focus on a future that is better than the present, assuming a priori that things will only get better. I therefore greatly enjoy the novelty of this film's premise: the main character, who does not entirely like the Victorian era he lives in, launches himself on a trek into the future, only to learn that the Victorian era was about as good as it gets. The further he goes into the future, the worse things are, until about 800,000th year or so when he finds that those who are left who still resemble humans have been reduced to passive, unintelligent cattle. Note that the remake entirely botches this point. The Eloi ARE supposed to be human cattle. The remake took too many liberties with the story and unsurprisingly dropped the ball.

4 out of 5 stars First rate movie.......2007-03-29

Very interesting and well done. Really enjoyed the story, acting and cinematography.

4 out of 5 stars Priceless.......2007-03-29

This time travelling tale is getting quite old, but is still fine
entertainment that will stir the imagination. Saw this movie around 40
years ago and even if some stuff is outdated, it still holds my attention.

4 out of 5 stars special for me.......2007-03-09

Just I consider: in this movie happen like that today, at any society.

5 out of 5 stars A Great look at Movie History.......2007-03-08

It was a great book and although this movie is a bit different from the original book, the movie gives us a great look at the view of the future in the 1960's. Obviously H. G. Well could not imagine a nuclear holocaust to destroy what we know of civilization, but it is a better explanation then what the book gives us and is easier to relate to. H. G. Wells was trying to show us the downfall of civilization through industrialization, and the movie shows us the modern problem of the 1960's.

Despite the inevitable law of diminishing returns, The Matrix Revolutions is quite satisfying as an adrenalized action epic, marking yet another milestone in the exponential evolution of computer-generated special effects. That may not be enough to satisfy hardcore Matrix fans who turned the Wachowski Brothers' hacker mythology into a quasi-religious pop-cultural phenomenon, but there's no denying that the trilogy goes out with a cosmic bang instead of the whimper that many expected. Picking up precisely where The Matrix Reloaded left off, this 130-minute finale finds Neo (Keanu Reeves) at a virtual junction, defending the besieged human enclave of Zion by confronting the attacking machines on their home turf, while humans combat swarms of tentacled mechanical sentinels as Zion's fate lies in the balance. It all amounts to a blaze of CGI glory, devoid of all but the shallowest emotions, and so full of metaphysical hokum that the trilogy's detractors can gloat with I-told-you-so sarcasm. And yet, Revolutions still succeeds as a slick, exciting hybrid of cinema and video game, operating by its own internal logic with enough forward momentum to make the whole trilogy seem like a thrilling, magnificent dream. -- Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars "oh i'm not so bad, once you get to know me".......2007-06-23

Conclusion is what Revolutions is, bringing and ended to the explosive Matrix Trilogy. A direct continuation from Reloaded, Revolutions is once again more eye candy than anything else, with the actual Matrix getting less screen time than the first 2 films. The focus is on the great war in Zion city, against the machines. Its true, the best action and story in this movie all take place in the real world. But there is still plenty of Matrix involved, but only in the beginning and end of the film.

The ending is predictable, but the journey to reach the conclusion has smaller twists and turns along the way that are unexpected. The movie is very intense, in terms of action and cgi. It is truly a thrill ride and we finally get to see an army of mechs unleash their firepower upon the sentinels in Zion city. Neo and Smith face off in their final battle. Unlike the first Matrix, which incorporated a nice blend of realistic martial arts and wirework, this battle is more cgi and expands to the 2 barely fighting on any ground, thus limiting the true martial arts. Not a bad fight, but its ridiculously overdone and not very pretty.

Some say this movie is just plain bad, but I don't believe that is true. Most people want to compare it to the first Matrix, but independently its not a bad movie. While it is not nearly as good as the first Matrix, it is still a great movie, but just like Reloaded, the story effort is not as strong as the first Matrix, and the focus seems to be on the action. You'll want to see Reloaded before Revolutions, simply because Reloaded is part 1 and Revolutions is pt2.

4 out of 5 stars Jesus analogy aside, some brave choices here.......2007-05-17

You know, it's almost impossible to do a trilogy franchise and please fans of the original with episodes 2 and 3. When Reloaded came out, I listened to the masses who moaned and rolled their eyes that no one should bother and to just accept the original Matrix as the classic that it is, essentially pretending that they don't exist. When will I learn my lesson and go see for myself instead of writing things off like that?! I did the same thing with The Two Towers, which everyone told me I would hate. Well excuse me, I loved it. Every last minute. No, it wasn't Fellowship and it wasn't supposed to be, it was different and progressed the story. I feel the same way about Reloaded and Revolutions; it's essentially one enormous story (and yes, it's easy to see the Jesus and King Arthur analogies here) told in three very different films. It would be cowardice and unoriginal to duplicate the first film just to play it safe and I commend the W brothers for staying true to their vision, however and whenever that came about. I won't spoil any plot points here but there are some surprises because American audiences are accustomed to certain things and a few times this film zigs when you expect it to zag. The battle sequences at Zion are a bit long but they're well done, and while I hear a lot of griping about how they ripped off Aliens with their technology didn't we all think it was damn cool at the time and wish we'd seen it do more? I did. So here you get to see that in an insane standoff to save the city.

Reloaded and Revolutions are far more akin to one another than the original Matrix is to either and from what I hear from people in the industry, the W bros didn't know they would be doing 3 films initially so the Matrix was conceived and produced as a standalone project and then the trilogy grew out of the popularity. Now, I personally don't think that detracts from anything. Whether it was all conceived at the outset or not, they planted some very interesting seeds in The Matrix and then helped them to sprout in Reloaded and Revolutions. I liked the philosophy and ideologies lobbed out there, whether I agreed with it all or not. This franchise has balls. Once in a while I felt like the fight scenes or action got to be a bit lengthy but at the same time there was such astounding beauty within each segment it kept me hooked into it and interested.

And as for the absolute ending, all I can say is that if you need a neat and tidy Hollywood ending in order to feel satisfied (which is very common and understandable) then this will leave you frustrated or upset. I also see a corrolation between people's own attitudes about life, death and rebirth reflected in their reactions to this trilogy, though sometimes on an entirely subconscious level. I just wish I had seen them all in the theater rather than allowing myself to be swayed by the massive tidal wave of negativity I heard about the last two installments. I now own them all and I'd love to watch them in sequence sometime soon, like Lord of the Rings or the original Star Wars trilogy, to see how that brings it all together as well.

And for the love of God, let's lay off of Keanu for once! Every actor has their niche, even Jack Nicholson. Would you want to see Jack as King Lear? Probably not. I hated Keanu in Much Ado because it's not his element, but as Neo he is the perfect choice.

If you open yourself to an intense experience and let go of any expectation of seeing another Matrix, you might enjoy this film as much as I did. Again, it might help to watch even 2 and 3 together since they do have such a similar energy and really build on one another. I think this is powerful stuff that would make for some really interesting discussions with a movie group.

3 out of 5 stars Lacks originality and style of acts I & II.......2007-02-28

Revolutions was not a great climax to the Matrix trilogy. The first was sensational. It was stylistic, original, and thought provoking. The first time I watched it I was captivated the entire time and wanted more. Many people did not think much of Reloaded, but I personally loved it. It was not mind-bending like the first, but that wasn't its purpose. The Matrix asked the questions; Reloaded set the stage for a final resolution. I felt it did so with continued originality and style. The fight sequences were artistic and compelling. I don't know how Matrix fans could not have loved watching the result of Neo realizing the potential of his abilities. I can't help overusing the word, but the movie just overflowed with style. The architect scene was odd, but it had good dialogue and was a pretty fun change of direction.

Revolutions almost completely dropped all of those aspects that I enjoyed about the first two. Instead of original, it was filled with cliche. Most of the Zion battle seemed like it could have been made by cutting and pasting from dozens of war/action films. Other than the visual aspect, there was nothing original about the entire Zion portion of the movie. Amaze some people by how well you can pilot a ship. Can an unlikely character somehow find it in him to overcome all when nearly all hope is lost? I need not mention the overdone yet cliche Neo/Trinity scene. The Merovingian fight scenes were fun but basically a hybrid of the security guard fight from I and the medieval weapons one from II.

On the whole, I liked the culmination of the Neo storyline. The machine city, along with the train station, was one of the few aspects of the film that was original and interesting. On a fairly superficial note, I just did not enjoy the fight scenes with Smith. The stylistic choreography was replaced with two guys flying all over the place. Even more superficially, I always loved Smith's wisea-- lines from the previous films, but we didn't really get any more of those. Again, I thought the concept of the Neo storyline was good. It just felt like it was delivered a little less thoughtfully, almost as though that plot was the last to be worked out before some sort of deadline. The Oracle's eyes were thrown in as being important to get then barely played any part in the story. The Merovingian didn't have anything interesting to add this time around. Generally it just felt like the actual plot of Revolutions was thrown together somewhat hastily.

The movie wasn't terrible, it was just quite mediocre. Visually it had many great moments including the batman bouncers at the coat check, much of the Zion battle, and the Source. However, it mostly lacked originality and didn't fit together that well. As the final act, Revolutions could have been the culmination of an exciting, philosophical, and compelling trilogy. Instead it was just the last movie.

4 out of 5 stars Revolutions.......2007-02-20

I waited a long time to see this because everyone I know didn't like it, as it relates to the first two films. When I finally gave in, I wasn't expecting much (my sure fire method of getting more out of a film), so I appreciated it more than I expected...plus Jada Pickett-Smith is hot. However, the ending needed a little more resolution, considering the monumental storyline.

Lower your expectations, have a few beers, and watch all three films in a row.

4 out of 5 stars More of the same...which is a good thing!.......2007-02-12

A nice, tidy ending to the groundbeaking Matrix phenomenon.

In the first and finest RoboCop movie, director Paul Verhoeven combined near-future science fiction with a keen sense of social satire--not to mention enough high-velocity violence to satisfy even the most voracious bloodlust. In Starship Troopers, Verhoeven and RoboCop cowriter Ed Neumeier take inspired cues from Robert Heinlein's classic sci-fi novel to create a special-effects extravaganza that functions on multiple levels of entertainment. The film might be called "Melrose Place in Space," with its youthful cast of handsome guys and gorgeous women who look like they've been recruited (and in some cases they were) from the cast of Beverly Hills 90210. Viewers might focus on the incredible, graphically intense action sequences (definitely not for children) in which heavily armed forces from Earth go to off-world battle against vast hordes of alien "bugs" bent on planetary conquest. The attacking bugs are marvels of state-of-the-art special-effects technology, and the space battles are nothing short of spectacular. But Starship Troopers is more than a showcase for high-tech hardware and gigantic, flesh-ripping insects. Recalling his childhood in Holland during the Nazi occupation, Verhoeven turns this epic adventure into a scathingly funny satire of fascist propaganda, emphasizing Heinlein's underlying warning against the hazards of military conformity and the sickening realities of war. It's an action-packed joy ride if that's all you're looking for, but Verhoeven has a provocative agenda that makes Starship Troopers as smart as it is exciting. The DVD includes an above-average commentary by the director and Neumeier, several deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes documentary and promotional featurette, cast bios, production notes, and more. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Cheesy Goodness It's A Bunch Of Calcium In This One .......2007-07-02

I have never seen the entire movie. I always catch this movie in the middle of it. But from what I have seen this is one of the worst movies ever. But that is what makes it great. Lame monsters and terrible over dramatic acting team up to make a B movie classic. Now if you think this is an actual "good" movie you have some issues. If you appreciate cheese flowing through your tv screen into your living and down the hall out of the window and down the street then this is for you.

2 out of 5 stars The Movie Rips the Heart Out of the Story.......2007-06-22

Robert Heinlein's 1959 Hugo Award winning novel Starship Troopers is the inspiration for this very loose movie adaptation. Heinlein was a 1928 graduate of the Naval Academy and the author of over thirty science fiction novels. Starship Troopers encouraged the growth of the military science fiction subgenre.

Literature is a springboard for ideas, insights and intellectual growth but science fiction rarely aspires or reaches such heights. When I first read the novel as a teenager it provided insights into how a society might be organized and in the years since it has been a springboard for new ideas and growth. I'm not saying the novel is great literature but it is superior science fiction. It presents a plausible future society with an appropriate intellectual and philosophical framework. It is the philosophical aspect that is at the heart of the novel. This movie rips that heart out of the story.

Written during the height of the Cold War, the novel was the means by which Heinlein argued for a strong military. The story also is a vehicle to present his libertarian political ideas. While the story does contains more introspection, exposition, and character discussion than is common in the genre it has also been criticized as exceedingly pro-military and lacking in character depth and development. The story is pro-military but I do not agree that it lacks character development. However, one must remember that, unlike most science fiction, Heinlein was presenting ideas with the novel, not merely a story about killing alien bugs.

If the movie stood alone I might be able to recommend it based on some fine special effects, truly unworldly aliens and great action scenes but since I read and enjoyed the novel I could not enjoy this travesty of a movie.

Recommendation: Read the novel, skip the movie.

3 out of 5 stars Does Not Do The Book Justice.......2007-06-08

I was excited to learn that a movie was being made of "Starship Troopers", a favorite novel of my teen-years, and even more excited that Paul Verhoeven would be directing it since he had previously taken a much more mediocre story (Robocop) and made an excellent action film out of it. Unfortunately, the movie "Starship Troopers" does not live up to the promise of the original - highly controversial - novel.

Of course, it is hardly unusual to feel let down by film adaptations of favorite books. The screen-writer's need to compress into a couple hours a story that may have involved the satisfied reader for several days guarantees that something will be left out that one really wishes had been left in. Nevertheless, I felt that the screen writing took far too many liberties with Robert A. Heinlein's novel, and the film suffered as a result.

As one example, the original novel was full of observations about the responsibility of people to 'serve' society before becoming "citizens" with the right to vote and participate in the political process - and this aspect became controversial because of Heinlein's emphasis on military service. The movie touches upon this, but quickly simplifies it into a stilted fascist state divided between the non-participating "civilians" and the military veteran "citizens". While even that could have made for some interesting plot development, the film proceeds to ignore it completely to focus instead on soldiers in an interstellar war who frequently seem to treat combat more like a football match - even after they have suffered shocking casualties. (A more careful reading of the book, by the way, will find that many forms of service to society other than military were included among the things responsible people could do on their path to citizenship. I am afraid it would take too long to include that here, though, and suggest that anyone interested simply read the book.)

Finally, there is the matter of the characters. Heinlein had strong views on the utter pointlessness of racism. He chose to create a future in which racism was so completely extinct that no one at any point in the book ever comments, or even thinks descriptively about other characters in terms of race. But he does leave enough clues in the text so that you know that the central character - Rico - is Filipino, not the white guy (Casper Van Dien) presented in the film. Once again, I find it unfortunate that most of the book's more progressive ideas were erased by the film-makers and more so that having done this, they then fail to develop any storyline around the evidently fascist state they have created.

This does not mean the film was a total waste. As a low-brow action picture it is entertaining. But I really think the book furnished material that could have made a far better movie, with greater depth to both the characters and their situation, and I continue to hope that it will be re-made some day into a more faithful adaptation of Heinlein's original novel.

4 out of 5 stars A little campy............2007-05-25

This is hard one to nail down. It is fun, campy, it makes you wonder what you would do if this was really real. A little on the gory side, but you can understand where the characters are coming from; I have felt like several of them. Lots of action, fun and friends that don't usually enjoy this kind of movie has watched and enjoyed it.

Far from the masterful treatment that groundbreaking animator Ralph Bakshi gave the similarly themed The Lord of the Rings just a year later, Wizards feels amateurish. A simplistic distillation of fantasy tropes, the scenario is millions of years after nuclear war wipes out civilization. Middle Earth fairies, elves, and magic emerge from the "good lands," while dimwitted mutants with poor comic timing emerge from the nuclear wastes. In the ultimate confrontation between good and evil, a hippie-ish wizard named Avatar defends his utopia against the technological and neo-Nazi revival of his bad-seed twin, Blackwolf. With volleys of jokes that couldn't hit a barn door, elves with Brooklyn accents, and the dubious climax that sees the kindly old wizard using one of the hated machines of war to triumph over evil, Wizards is one of fantasy animation's least successful examples. --Alan E. Rapp

Description

Set on a post-apocalyptic Earth, this fantasy adventure follows the story of Avatar, the kindly, eccentric sorcerer-ruler of Montagar, a rainbow paradise inhabited by elves and fairies. Avatar?s evil brother, Blackwolf, dominates Scortch, a bleak land of goblins and wraiths. When the power-hungry Blackwolf attacks Montagar, Avatar, accompanied only by a spirited young woman and a courageous elf, must enter the darkness of Scortch to save his world. WIZARDS is a thought-provoking, kaleidoscopic feast for the eyes that will enthrall animation fans and film lovers of all ages.

4 out of 5 stars Blast from the Past.......2007-06-01

I was trying to describe Wizards to my 17-year-old, then thought "I wonder if it's available for sale?" Sure enough! It was every bit as whimsical, inventive and bizarre as I remembered!

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Storyline.......2007-05-26

A little slow-paced, but very interesting animated storyline about a post-holocaust world where the "Big Bad Evil Guy" uses WWII propaganda films to motivate his tropps to overrun the "Good Guys." Not for children, but teens can probably keep up. As usual, a must for Bakshi fans. A decent gamer film.

4 out of 5 stars The Fantasy Amine - before fantasy was cool.......2007-04-10

I remember seeing this a couple times in college, a solid 25+ years ago, usually after some heavy partying, and being impressed. I picked it up on a lark, to show my kids and you know what...more critical and cynical over the years, it still is well worth the time. While others will quibble about the animation quality, Bakshi made a story you care about, that is fun and cool to watch, with animated characters that are better than most, and even a message. It is a movie of its time, which might confuse the young, but a great fairy tale is a thing to remember forever.
When Bakshi is good, he is really good, hopefully if rumours of Wizards 2 are true, he keeps in touch with what made the first one worth thinking about all this time.

5 out of 5 stars I did something bad..........2007-03-29

So, I wanted this movie on DVD a LOT and at the time, people were able to request certain films be put on DVD through Amazon by entering your e-mail address...

And over the course of about a month or two, I sent Amazon hundreds of e-mail addresses I created on Yahoo! and sent them my ALL of e-mail addresses in my address book.

A short while later, I (and everybody in my address book) received a notification that Wizards would be put on DVD and sold through Amazon.

Why am I telling you this?

BECAUSE THAT'S HOW MUCH I LIKED THIS MOVIE!

I saw it for the first time on Cinemax back around 1998. I searched for it online, but had NO clue what it was called. I finally found it about 6 years later. I REALLY wanted to see it again.

THAT'S HOW GOOD THIS MOVIE IS!

Sure, the animation kind of stinks, but there were some revolutionary video effects in here and it's a true testament to what artistic directors and producers can do on a tight budget and time frame.

(I did feel bad when Ralph Bakshi thanks everyone who e-mailed Amazon in the commentary)

Falling from the Oscar-winning glory of Dances with Wolves to the opposite end of the critical and box-office scale, Kevin Costner must have been deeply humbled when this three-hour postapocalyptic tale--his sophomore effort as a director--was greeted with a critical thrashing and tepid audience response. One of the most conspicuous flops of its decade, the 1997 release must have seemed like a sure thing on paper: a kind of futurist Western starring Costner as a charismatic drifter-turned-hero who leads the resistance against a military tyrant (Will Patton) by reviving the long-dormant postal system to reunite isolated communities in their fight for freedom. The movie bombed, but, like many audacious failures, it's got qualities that make it at least partially endearing, and its earnestness (although bordering on corny) keeps it from being entirely silly. Faint praise, perhaps, but Costner's ode to patriotism is occasionally stirring and visually impressive. The dual-layered, widescreen DVD includes a documentary segment about the creation of the film's special effects sequences, featuring a running commentary by the special effects creators. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Ignore the Critics.......2007-07-04

I've enjoyed this movie so much over the years that I found myself adding it to my personal DVD collection - and I am very selective in what I add. Yes it's long, but it's also exciting, moving, and inspiring in turns. This is a movie that features adventure and explores themes of courage, commitment and patriotism. It's also the best movie Costner's ever done.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie........2007-06-27

The movie starts out slow but is worth being patient. Really good, moving, thought provoking movie.

4 out of 5 stars A big surprise!.......2007-05-26

I have never been a fan of Kevin Costner's films with the exception of The Untouchables, and even then I enjoyed Sean Connery's performance much more than Kevin's.

One night, I was sick with the flu and the medicine I was taking at the time kept me wide awake. My wife had already gone off to bed so I wrapped myself in a blanket, settled on to the couch and began channel surfing.

I came across The Postman on HBO and figured; "Why not?". Late night TV always left something to be desired in my opinion, so I gave The Postman a look see.

I was hooked.

The story was epic in scope and VERY original. All of the actors give incredible performances (especially Wil Patton). The film does have moments where things seem to drag on, but overall, your interest doesn't wane. I sat motionless for this 3-hour film. Very rarely am I able to do that.

As soon as the movie was over, I wanted to see it again. Unlike most films, this one becomes something more with each viewing.

Give this movie a try. You will not be diappointed.

3 out of 5 stars The First Time .......2007-05-16

The first time I saw this and "Waterworld" I thought Costner had no business doing SciFi movies. I'm sure some thought that way about "Robin Hood" and "Field of Dreams". In each of his movies he doesn't quite seem on his game, but then there is something about each of them that draws you back. Perhaps it is because he isn't quite on his game, slightly vulnerable and human. Perhaps it is due to the fact there is so much trash out there, these are far better than them when compared. All I can say is I at first didn't own these movies and I wasn't particular impressed with them and now I do own them. I actually sit down and watch them and find them reasonably entertaining. They will grow on you if you give them a chance.

It is incredibly well thought out. The action is fantastic. Vin Diesel is Riddick!! You can see and learn more and more with each and every viewing. Those that do not get it, simply don't want too. That is there choice and so be it, but I have not seen many movies that can top this one in any area. It should be remembered right in line with the Lord of the Rings movies in scope and depth. WoW wow WOW. Cannot wait for number 2 and 3. No movie deserves more consideration for sequel than this one and it was meant to be a trilogy from the start.

5 out of 5 stars HD-DVD - This one is wonderful.......2007-05-12

A lot of diverse comments have been written about this movie. I just plainly love it. Don't mistake me, I don't like Vin Diesel this much but in this movie, he is part of a greater good. I really liked the interaction between Vin Diesel, Judi Dench - one of my favorites actors, Thandie Newton and Karl Urban. No, it's also the perfect picture quality of this HD-DVD which makes me really want to watch this film. The CGI is amazing, the sunrise on Crematoria, the exhaust plumes of the starships of the Necros and more. This is really stunning! I also own the directors cut DVD but this is far away from what we see on this HD-DVD. I enjoyed the whole movie much more and felt much more in the movie than with the SD-DVD. This DVD doesn't have the emotional touch of Batman Begins but it is as good from picture quality.
If you are into Sci-Fi and Action and want to see a consistent story, I highly recommend the HD-DVD for you.
Be prepared to 'see more' on this HD-DVD than you saw before.

5 out of 5 stars best HD DVD transfer available.......2007-05-07

The more times I watched this movie, the more I appreciate how interesting and unique it is. It is true no-compromise sci-fi for fans of the genre. The extra scenes on the DVD help flesh out the movie as well.

About the HD DVD transfer. It is the best one on the market for the Toshiba player. I have about ten HD DVD movies and have been very disappointed with a lot of the transfers. Not sure if its the compression some use or the original source material. Most don't do the format justice. This is the HD DVD that I use to show off the system. It has amazing clarity. They took their time and did it right.

5 out of 5 stars Broke the Mold.......2007-03-29

The Chronicles of Riddick steps outside the traditional SciFi box. Good and Evil are blurred. This film is Vin Diesel's best performance by far. The best part is that this film built on top of the weaker film , Pitch Black. Sequels are usually disappointing, but like Empire Strikes Back, and Godfather II, this film trumps its forbearer. If you are looking for an original SciFi action thriller this movie is for you.

Description

Directed by Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator), ROBOT JOX reveals a world where nations settle their territorial disputes by a single combat between two giant machines. Piloted by national heroes Achilles (Gary Graham, TV's Alien Nation) and Alexander (Paul Koslo, Shadowchaser), the robots meet in Death Valley to fight for the greatest prize of all: Alaska. But when Achilles' machine crushes 300 spectators, the match ends in a draw. Refusing to face Alexander in a rematch, Achilles is replaced by Athena (Anne-Marie Johnson, TV's Melrose Place), a genetically-engineered combat fighter. So when the GenJox is nearly killed and the game is forfeited, Achilles avenges their honor by challenging Alexander to a winner-take-all death match, in this heavy-metal, sci-fi adventure.

4 out of 5 stars Robot underwear.......2007-04-08

There, I said it!

Excuse my little funny and lets get to business, bare with me a minute.
One: No one will ever convince me a robot--or massive object--standing better than fifty feet tall has survivabilitly on the battlefield. I mean these things were anywhere from 100 feet to 300 feet tall.
Twenty miles away they could see you and start shooting with everything they can throw from that far away and you could never see most of it coming even with the best mono-radar. "Well," you say "The other guy is in one also and it is only the two of them fighting!" And I say, "Well...that's true but how did they all get so 'big'. I mean, if fifty years ago everybody was using them it would have been a short lived war--no such thing as 'conceal and cover' with one of those babies." My point being apparently in the fifty years after the 'robot wars' they got bigger.
Two: Missle/rocket launchers on both shoulders, semi-automatic artillery in the center of the chest (just beneath the cotpit), lasers firing from the chest--sometimes the hands--hands sometimes detach and blast forth with rocket engines to smash an opponent--a fifty foot long chainsaw designed to cut through a really big opponent and several other weapons.......and then at the end when they both go berserk they resort to a stomping, kicking, bashing fest? Come on!
Three: I could see me going neanderthal with a knee between the legs as my semi-automatic artillery gun zeros' in on the pilots' cotpit but a smash fest?
Four: A neat story that should go into a part two with somewhat smaller and faster robots.
Five: Ok story line, ok acting.
Seven: If your cotpit is that obvious to see, why waist time taking pock
shots at the legs, arms, and so on--hit the cotpit and get it over with.
Eight: For those of you owning the Mech Warrior series some of this is going to look familiar.
Nine: The robots are so big they are Godzilla slow--it kinda makes a fellow wonder; why am I slowing walking over there to punch this guy with a fist as big as a house when I could be shooting him with those two shiney brand new missile launchers on my shoulder with about twenty shoots each? Oh well, so much for realistic thinking.
Ten: I think a part two should involve the robot war.
Eleven: As a matter of interesting fact, I feel a part two should show how it all began--The two countries are fighting, we're loosing, uh oh--time to bring out our super weapon--we do and then the enemy shows up with one of their own.
Twelve: All in all, I am glad I bought it, viewed it, reviewed it. For science fiction to be about technology from all directions you would think the field would be crawling with robots--but it isn't. I mean, you got Data but he didn't even look like one (that's because he is an android) then you've got the Lost in Space robot, Day the Earth Stood Still robot, Forbidden planet robot and two or three others. Of course you could say "Robot Jox didn't have a robot in it--they are mechanicals with a human in side...they don't think for themselves--dummy!" To which I will say "Well...sorry. I mean something passably robotic."

And so there it is. The original idea comes from THE Robert A. Heinleins'
novel StarShip Troopers. I recommend both this movie and that novel to all who are interested. So why only four stars? Well, Heinleins' novel pretty much laid-out a five star idea, Robot Jox really only came out with a two star attempt at it, another star for having the ball-bearings to even try, and the final star for going through with it in a fine way.
Mind you I am not throwing off on them--they did great--but they could have done better with them same people, equipment, and money.

4 out of 5 stars So campy, its fun to watch.......2007-03-09

I remember seeing this at a video rental store, and remembering it being advertised on television and in different magazines. From the box art (different from the box art shown here in Amazon - there were two robots facing off), I just had that feeling that it was going to be good.

Was I ever wrong!

This film is so campy, so over the top, it reminds me of other movies in the same vein (Wing Commander for instance). These are great to watch just for the sheer cheap entertainment value, but don't blame me if you feel a tinge of regret in enjoying Robot Jox.

5 out of 5 stars robot jox.......2007-01-20

this movie is excellent, i love gary graham as achellies piloying the battle robot

3 out of 5 stars Giant Robot Mahem!.......2007-01-10

I remember this movie from when I was younger, and more tolerant in my opinion on the quality of special effects. The stop-action quality of the robot sequences, while not up to Harryhausen standards, are still credible, until the weapons and combat are introduced. The laser, cannon and offensive technology used in the battle scenes, make the battle look like a scene from the old marrionation "Thunderbirds" TV show. The sets used to simulate the piloting of a giant robot are well done, a credit to years of giant robot anime from Japan. The major plot revolves around using robots to settle disputes in a war-ravaged world. Unfortunately, the only way we know how bad things are, is when a large family celebrates with a meal of beanie-weenie. The script and acting are kept at a basic level, obviously geared to a target audience between the ages of 8 and 13. All things considered, unless you enjoy watching hokey movies, like I do, I'd reserve this movie for young children who don't care about FX quality.

4 out of 5 stars Good Movie........2007-01-09

I was playing Quake 4 the other day when a feeling of nostalgia came over me. Looking back at this movie, I am amazed at how it kept my attention at the time. Just thinking about it gave me that sorta warm and fuzzy feeling inside. Though I haven't seen it in years, I doubt it would have the same effect on me today. This aside, I found the movie highly entertaining.

Allowing for all the low-budget shortcomings that plague any straight-to-video production, Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation serves up 92 minutes of passable sci-fi action. Parlaying his veteran status as an animator, special-effects wizard, and stalwart survivor of the CGI revolution, Phil Tippett (with returning screenwriter Ed Neumeier) makes a woefully uninspired directorial debut with this makeshift sequel to Paul Verhoeven's 1997 blockbuster, retaining the jarhead militarism of Robert Heinlein's original novel while serving up more bugs, an all-new cast of attractive young stars, and all-too-familiar plot elements borrowed from a dozen better movies. "Bigger is better" is out of the question under such meager budgetary circumstances, so Tippett and Neumeier compensate with gruesome bugfights and gross-out effects at regular intervals, some standard-issue nudity, and escalating paranoia (echoing Carpenter's The Thing) when a new breed of bugs use human hosts (à la The Hidden) to overtake a stranded platoon of Federation soldiers on a bug-infested planet. Relying on murky confinement to hide nondescript sets, Troopers 2 has three engaging leads in its favor: TV regular Richard Burgi is solidly cast as the titular hero (he's the military equivalent of Pitch Black's Riddick); Colleen Porch is engaging as the most sensible Federation survivor; and screen veteran Ed Lauter makes the most of his salty role as a battle-hardened general. Unfortunately, they're adrift in a knock-off sequel (shot on high-def digital video) that could never do justice to its energetic predecessor. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars underappriciated.......2007-06-16

Most people did not like the sequal to Starship Troopers but i think it really makes sense, i mean, the first film was and action horror and the second is just plain psychological horror. its really re-invents the series and its based on another Robert A. Heinlein Book "Puppet Masters". so if you expect to see the sequal to be like the original, you will be dissapointed, but if you just see it as another horror movie, you will surely enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Just Comments.......2007-05-18

This is one of my favorites movies, resolution is very good, and quality of product is excellent (Zero Damage).

The bad point is that in Amazon.com there's not info of languages for this item, so I'm from El Salvador and it doesn't have Spanish Subtitles.

In overview this was a great purchase.

1 out of 5 stars negative 92 stars.......2007-04-23

If I could I would give this movie -92 stars, for each minute of my life I wasted on it. Such a disappointment for fans of the original Starship Troopers. It pretty much comes down to being a bad slasher movie. The only decent special effects scene was RECYCLED from the first Starship Troopers. The first scene in the movie is comical it is so bad. For fans of the first Starship Troopers who are curious about this movie I'm saving you the suspense and valuable hour and a half of your life.
