The One
The One sets a martial arts milestone by pitting action star Jet Li against his greatest enemy: himself. This sci-fi thriller establishes a "multiverse" consisting of countless parallel universes, each populated by variants of every individual. Li plays a renegade from the Multiverse Agency, illegally traveling through "quantum tunnels" to eliminate all versions of himself until only two remain, each sharing the cumulative strength of their "parallel universe versions." This mumbo-jumbo inspires a variety of dazzling special effects, and director James Wong (with cowriter and fellow X-Files alumnus Glen Morgan) injects clever humor into the Matrix-derivative premise. Carla Gugino is wasted as the "good" Li's obligatory love interest, but The One will appeal to action fans with its fast-paced pursuit between the evil Li and two agents (Delroy Lindo, Jason Statham) assigned to stop his trans-universal killing spree. It's a one-gimmick movie, best enjoyed with your brain in neutral. --Jeff Shannon

Meltdown
Mild-mannered Jet Li is bodyguard and secret stunt double to Jackie Chan-like action-movie superstar Jacky Cheung in this action-packed spoof of the Hong Kong movie industry. Li, playing a former demolition squad commander haunted by the loss of his family, takes a job with the womanizing Cheung, an action hero with a reputation for performing all his own stunts. Li surreptitiously performs the most dangerous bits with quick-switch secrecy, but when a TV journalist catches sight of him sneaking from a spectacular fall they suspect an elaborate publicity conspiracy. The showbiz scandal becomes sidetracked when high-tech jewel thieves take them all hostage in a skyscraper heist that smacks of Die Hard. Li turns stealth fighter, stalking perimeter guards and taking out the heavily armed bad guys with a smooth display of acrobatic martial arts moves, while glory hound Cheung proves his own skills in a brave confrontation with the thieves. The swipes at Jackie Chan are mean-spirited and undeserved, but Cheung's manic, mugging performance is awfully funny (unlike much Hong Kong humor), and Li plays his usual moral backbone with quiet authority, impressive agility, and explosive fireworks. Meltdown is broadly played and Wong Jing directs bluntly, but the movie packs plenty of explosions, great martial arts work, and a driving sense of energy. --Sean Axmaker

1 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......2007-07-05

I just can't believe this show gets 4 stars and a half.
I would give 2, but to lower the average, i'm giving it the worst possible.
There are so many scenes that just don't make sense.
Example is, in the finale, Sylar even stops bullets, but easily gets stabbed by Hiro who just runs into him with a sword without using his power.
Those scenes just let me down so badly.
Also, People who read subs may not feel the same way, but those who play Japanese people are the worst actors I have ever seen. Hiro may be Japanese but pretty much speaks in monotone. Ando is definitely Korean and he speaks Japanese fine, but not good enough to play the role. Hiro's sister is Japanese, but his father is not. They couldn't even hire two Japanese guys or what? Since I speak Japanese fluently, all of them are terrible actors to me. Just terrible.

5 out of 5 stars Are you on the list?.......2007-07-05

What happens when oridinary people begin to discover that they may not be so ordinary afer all? You get Heroes, a fantastic show that doesn't just stop and focus on the surface of its premise of people with extraordinary powers. The creators of the show take you deeper than that, bringing the audience on a journey into the lives of its characters, as they grow and evolve while coming to grips with their newfound abilities. From the first episode of the season to the last, the story builds, never revealing too much before it should, nor leaving the audience with too little at any time. With great writing and a great cast of talented actors, this is a show that keeps you wanting more.

2 out of 5 stars I was not a fan.......2007-07-03

I'm sure I'll get lots of comments about how I'm completely wrong about the series, I don't know anything, and I'm sure other things will be said. Simply enough I just didn't like the show.

Its really suprising to me because every single one of my friends love the show. I tried really hard to watch the whole first season and I've ground to a halt at episode 16.

Things I Like:
-- The voiceovers by the indian professor - not the old one, the young one. They are generally well written and give a decent vibe to each show. He basically introduces and closes each show with a voice over.
-- The acting is fairly good for a run of the mill TV show
-- In particular - the acting of Claire and Hiro. They are very likeable characters and it makes thier storylines very likeable.
-- the cheerleader and hero portions of the story. They do the best job of stressing individuals discovering thier power and how they deal with it in the context of understanding thier life.

I disliked

-- the sheer number of different storylines they tried to meld together. I felt that there were too many characters and in effect they tried to do entirely too much at once. It caused what I think to be a major weakness which is the short choppy scenes. As another reviewer mentioned you get about 1 to 2 minutes per scene before it jumps to someone else. I think at least a couple characters could have been cut from the storyline and it would have made the show feel less frenetic.

--Predictability - in general you can see almost any turn of events coming way in advance either because of deliberate writing or the way the director films give you a bit of a hint of whats coming. Mainly it seems to be the way the show is written.

-- I desperately didn't feel the need to include Ali Larter's family and Peter's brother. It almost seemed like they were added to give more drama to the show, but really I just kept wanting to fast forward through thier parts because I found thier characters grating and dull. While I see how they enter into the story, I also can see Heroes without them in it.

-- The are at times, and I know this is a generalization, where it felt like they forced Lost to have sex with X-Men and this show was the result. It was almost like Lost with people with special abilities. I admit I like Lost, and I like X-Men, and I even liked parts of Heroes....

End result..I didn't like Heroes and thought it could have been a lot better. I figured I would share my opinion so others could see a review that didn't just state "I hate it" without reasons.

5 out of 5 stars Hiro is number one!.......2007-06-28

What got me hooked on this show was the character Hiro. He is probably one of the most powerful but he hasn't quite figured out everything he can do. The place they leave us off with makes ya think hes gonna get even cooler :) travel through space and time or just stop time. lol. And his acting is awesome.

Peter has nothing in the beginning he just wants to help people. He eventually starts figuring out what he can do. I don't wanna say much more though or it'll spoil it.

I guess this show has something for everyone. Those are my two favorite characters and They keep me interested in the show. I epically wanna see Hiro and Peter kick some more butt.

When I can afford it I'll be buying this. I pretty much still have every episode on my computer.

1 out of 5 stars Could have been better.......2007-06-27

Heroes is entertaining and does hold your attention at times. It is not very original and I am sad to say,it will make any attempt by J. Michael Straczynski of "Babylon 5" fame to bring "Rising Stars" to the screen and be compared as a knockoff.
"American Idol" and "Lost" are considered giant hits, followed by millions, explains the massive appeal of this show.
The show bounces around constantly giving each type of viewer something to identify with and most waiting expectantly to see what happens in the next episode. The finale was a weak attempt to bring a conclusion to this season, and may be an indication of how weak this series will be in the long run as the writers run out of ideas and try to copy other successful cliche' that will be touted as original ideas.
I will probably buy this for the extras. When the price drops to around $10.00 or I find a quality bootleg copy.

Thank goodness for second seasons. While the first season of The Office started dubiously with a pilot that was just a poor copy of the original British version, it did manage to provide enough good material to stay on the air and hint that better was yet to come. And here it is. The second season of The Office finds its own footing and manages to do the near-impossible by not only breaking free of the gravity of that excellent BBC version to stand solidly on its own, but establishing it as one of the best comedies on TV. Season 2 starts out strong with "The Dundies," where Regional Manager, Michael Scott (Steve Carell, The 40 Year Old Virgin) hosts the company's annual office-awards event with his signature less-than-perfect grace. Things seem to only get worse for him this season as he bumbles a potential affair with his boss, Jan (Melora Harding), angers his employees by reading their emails ("Email Surveillance"), cooks his foot ("The Injury"), and accidentally destroys the warehouse with a forklift in "Boys and Girls," one of the season's highlight episodes. Always at his side is the clueless paranoid Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson), the Assistant Regional Manager ("Assistant to the Regional Manager," Michael always reminds him in one of the show's running jokes).

One of the reasons for the show's improvement in the second season is increased focus on Dwight's character, who's becoming something of a pop-culture icon right down to having his own bobblehead. He in turn provides so much good material for Pam (Jenna Fischer) and Jim (John Krasinsky) to play off of, to their own amusement. But of course, Pam and Jim's simmering relationship is the real meat of the show, as their compatibility becomes more obvious, Jim's feelings for her continue to grow, and Pam struggles with the impending marriage to her less-than-caring boyfriend, Roy (David Denman). Things have to come to a head, and they do nicely in the final episode, "Casino Night." As strong as the leading characters are in The Office, it's the excellent peripheral characters that really make the show hilarious, especially dimwitted office-slug Kevin (Brian Baumgartner), long-suffering intern Ryan (B.J. Novak), office-ditz Kelly (Mindy Kaling), and ultra-conservative Angela (Angela Kinsey). As with season 1, this season contains excellent bonus features to give you an excuse to spend more time at The Office, including the fake PSAs, commentaries, Michael's The Faces of Scranton movie, the ten stand-alone webisodes, and deleted scenes. --Daniel Vancini

Description

Steve Carell (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, The Daily Show) stars in The Office, a fresh and funny mockumentary-style glimpse into the daily interactions of the eccentric workers at the Dunder Mifflin paper supply company. Based on the smash-hit British series of the same name and adapted for American Television by Greg Daniels (King of the Hill, The Simpsons), this fast-paced comedy parodies contemporary American water-cooler culture. Earnest but clueless regional manager Michael Scott (Carell) believes himself to be an exceptional boss and mentor, but actually receives more eye-rolls than respect from his oddball staff. Entertainment Weekly calls The Office "smart and trenchant," and all six hilarious season one episodes are available here on DVD for the first time. The awkward silences in The Office will have you laughing out loud!

It's time to clock in for Season Two of The Office, the comically honest look at the world of white-collar employment. Steve Carell (The 40-Year-Old Virgin) won a Golden Globe for his role as Michael Scott, the sometimes pathetic but always hilarious regional manager of Dunder-Mifflin paper supply company. Join him and the amazing ensemble cast (Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer and B.J. Novak) as Michael, Dwight, Jim, Pam and Ryan navigate the hidden romance and open absurdity of the business world, from the Christmas party to sexual harassment training to the "Booze Cruise" retreat to the heartbreak of "Casino Night." Developed by Greg Daniels (King of the Hill, The Simpsons), fully staffed with all 22 outrageous episodes and packed with hours of laugh-ot-loud bonus features, The Office: Season Two is the must-own cure for the workday blues.

5 out of 5 stars Best show since Seinfeld.......2007-07-05

How often do you witness something someone is doing and you feel that horrible embarrassment for them? You know, that chill that goes up the spine?? Yeah, that is what this show is all about. And it's brilliant. Each character is flawless and contributes to the office environment perfectly. For those of you who complain about it being racist or prejudice or sexist or blah blah blah and because of this is insulting, well, you don't get the humor. It's what makes the show so great. You get to appreciate it even more when you work in an office environment and can relate to some of the show's situations (though perhaps not as extreme as the show). I have yet to watch the BBC version and I have heard critisism from the British version's fans...understandable. The American version is based off of the British version because of how great it was. In any case, this is still one of the top sitcoms in the last decade. Keep up the great work Steve Carrell et al!

5 out of 5 stars Superb Comedy.......2007-07-04

I watch very little television, but this is worth saving my THursday nights for! It is timely, witty, satirical, and just plain funny! Even my grandkids love this show!

4 out of 5 stars great season 1!.......2007-07-02

great season 1! a must have for any Office fan!
it has a great pilot that introduces all the characters and the show.

it also includes some great episodes including my fav. "Diversity Day"! "Basket Ball" and "The Alliance are some of the other great ones.

5 out of 5 stars You'll never tire of owning this.......2007-06-29

The out-takes alone make this worth owning. I own both Season 1 & 2 and thoroughly enjoy watching them over and over. Watching Rainn Wilson (aka Dwight Schrute) try to keep a straight face while saying some of the nutty things he's famous for in the out-takes makes you cry with laughter. Go for it - you won't regret buying this at all.

I started watching the episodes after my father started buying them off of Itunes. I Love the series; it is very well done with cool gadgets, great hummor, a good cast and interesting plot lines for each episode. I can't wait for season two to come out.

5 out of 5 stars Something New and creative!.......2007-07-01

This show is really something that the television world can be proud of. It's something new with some great characters, interesting story lines that have you up and down every minute not to mention the creative angle of the show. The acting is incredible. SciFi took a great leap for television kind with Eureka. 2 thumbs all the way up!

5 out of 5 stars One of the few series I watch.......2007-06-29

There are lots of lengthy good reviews so I'll just say this is one of the few shows that interests me on tv. It has great humor, a great premise and great characters. The father-daughter relationship of the sheriff is wonderful, love the deputy, the wonderful chef at the cafe, pretty much all the characters. The humor is intelligent, the stories are entertaining and interesting. I really, really enjoy this show! I was so excited to hear the 2nd season was starting.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-06-28

I love this show. I hope they don't take it off like so many of the series that have been removed. It makes you laugh, think, dream of what could be possible.
I do not miss Tuesday night on SciFi unless the power is off at my house.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy the Humor.......2007-06-15

This is a show that doesn't take itself seriously, so neither should you--relax, it's meant to be funny. I realize that humor is subjective, but if you like it wry, dry and quirky, you'll probably like the high-tech/small town of Eureka and its nerdy/genius denisons. I didn't want to miss a single episode. The writing is sharp, the characters engaging, and the odd mix of classic sci-fi tropes are hilarious. The plots are silly and clever at the same time, with the same reaffirming message: Humanity wins over technology--barely!

The Sopranos, Season 6, Part 1 is the most contentious release yet in the acclaimed series' history. While many fans think it jumped the shark at the exact moment Vito said "I love you, Johnny Cakes" , this season also contains some of the series finest moments and plumbs new depths of character, while continuing to add to the body count. Things get started with a bang, literally, that unexpectedly sends Tony (James Gandolfini) to the hospital and into a coma where he experiences an alternate reality while in limbo. At one point he awakes and asks "Who am I? Where am I going?" encapsulating this season's central theme in a moment of desperation wrapped in a fever dream. But it's not all existentialism. With Tony and Uncle Junior both of the picture, the capos in the Soprano crew try to take advantage of the situation and begin jockeying for position while a reluctant Silvio (Steve Van Zandt), acting in Tony's place, struggles to keep everyone in check. Things aren't going much better for Tony's family, as A.J. (Robert Iler) confesses to Carmela (Edie Falco) that he flunked out of school, and while at Tony's bedside, swears revenge for his injury. The stress of the situation finally gets to Carmela, who takes up Dr. Melfi's (Lorraine Bracco) offer to help and finds herself in the strange position of confiding in her husband's therapist, revealing for once that she feels some guilt over making the kids complicit in how Tony makes his living—plus there's the issue of whether she really loves him. Christopher (Michael Imperioli) continues to provide much of the comic relief for the series, culminating in one of this season's best episodes when he flies out to L.A. in a bumbling attempt to get Ben Kingsley to sign on for his fledgling movie (Saw meets The Godfather), and ends up mugging Lauren Bacall for her goodie basket at an awards ceremony. Sowing further discord in the ranks, Vito (Joseph Gannoscoli) finally gets outed as homosexual, and is forced to flee for his life up to New Hampshire where he meets "Johnny Cakes." Finally, even with New York boss Johnny "Sack" Sacramoni (Vince Curatola) in prison, Phil Leotardo (Frank Vincent) makes plays against Tony and eventually sets in motion a hit against someone on Tony's crew, and now a larger war with Johnny Sack's crew seems to be looming.

Series creator David Chase seems to be saying with this season that character is destiny. If so, then Season Six, Part 1 is taking the necessary time to flesh out who these people really are, and is leaving the destiny part up for Part 2. The fact that the series' writers have been able to maintain such a strong show with so many interweaving storylines for so long is a feat not to be taken lightly. That said, this season of The Sopranos does deserve some of the criticism it's received: the Vito storyline would have been better served by resolving it in fewer episodes, and the season ending is the most unsatisfying one yet, leaving many fans wanting more. But the bottom line is that this season deserves more praise than criticism, proving that even at its weakest, The Sopranos is still the strongest show on TV.--Daniel Vancini

Description

Several crises threaten Tony and his crew; for starters, rival boss Johnny Sack (Vince Curatola) is in prison, and the always-tense relations between the New Jersey and New York families are strained through the unpredictable behavior of Sack?s surrogates. The third season of the WB's small town soap begins with the blaze that ended the second ("Like You like an Arsonist"). Dan (Paul Johannson) makes it out alive, but vows to seek vengeance on the perpetrator--even if that person happens to be estranged son Lucas (Chad Michael Murray). In the following episode ("From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea"), Dan's preferred offspring returns to Tree Hill. Will Nathan (James Lafferty) reconcile with wife Haley (Bethany Joy Galeotti)? It's her deepest desire, but Nathan has his doubts. Further changes are afoot. Haley and Brooke (Sophia Bush), for instance, move in together...which wouldn't seem so strange if they were in college rather than high school. Brooke and Lucas also try a "non-exclusive" arrangement (her idea, not his). When sexy schemer Rachel (Danneel Harris) joins the cheerleading squad, Brooke starts to regret her decision. Meanwhile, the delightfully odious Dan runs for mayor. Just when he thinks he's got it locked, Lucas's mom, Karen (Moira Kelly), throws her hat in the ring. But those developments are minor compared to the school shooting in episode 16 ("With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept").

Guest stars include Nada Surf ("Return of the Future") and season two favorites Fall Out Boy ("An Attempt to Tip the Scales"), while recurring characters include Peyton's birth mother Ellie (Sheryl Lee, Twin Peaks), and smug singer/songwriter Chris (Tyler Hilton, Walk the Line), with whom Haley collaborates again. As in the previous year, the finale ("The Show Must Go On") is a cliffhanger. Fortunately for fans, One Tree Hill was picked up by the CW, so resolution awaits in season four. Special features include commentary, deleted scenes, and a featurette about the making of "With Tired Eyes." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars There's only one Tree Hill - and it just gets better.......2007-06-27

I personally feel that this show gets better with each season, and its third is no exception. The drama is fascinating and the sweet moments are numerous, especially with such couples on the mend as the epic Nathan and Haley, and also Brooke and Lucas. More guest musicians appear, such as Fall Out Boy and Jack's Mannequin (both featured on the Friends With Benefit soundtrack), and there is also a reappearance of Tyler Hilton as the smarmy Chris Keller - meaning Haley will be singing again (also on the soundtrack). Dan, once again, revels in destroying those around him (literally), and the season finale leaves you hanging on tenterhooks with a plethora of questions swimming in your head. A must for any One Tree Hill lover.

5 out of 5 stars This season has it all.......2007-06-11

This season has the school shooting, the vow renewels between Nathan and Haley and ends with so many questions you just have to have the answers to!

4 out of 5 stars One for the diehard fans.......2007-05-15

As a late comer to OTH I was completely satisified with series 3. It does however not push the boundaries of any existingly relationships in new ways. "different things" happen, sure just no real surprises. The cast are talented indeed and they are what make an indulgent pleasure. The DVD box set is excellent for international buyers ( I am Australian ) as we don't get as much information. The extras scenes, gag reel and commentary a good little bonus.

I recently became a fan of House throughout the course of the 3rd season, and needed to catch up. The two-season set of DVD's was perfect for me. It was an excellent price compared to what the two would be individually in the store. I am only half way done but so far, Dr. House has lived up to my expectations. I recommend this show to anyone!

    5 out of 5 stars Superb DVD.......2007-06-10

Well, what can I say about this DVD set.. You get the best of Dr. House in season 1 and 2 and you will enjoy every second of it. In top of all the episods from the season 1 and 2, you get alot of bonus stuff like bloopers and set tour etc. I really enjoyed the DVD collection and it is most deff a good buy...

Okay people, there are plenty of reviews about these DVDs already. And if you're thinking about purchasing these season compilations, then you probably already know about House. What I want to comment about is the price for both of these together. This is an awesome deal, fellow amazon users, because I paid this much for just Season One. So, if you're thinking about buying these, well, go ahead! Kudos to you for saving more money than I!

Ocean's Eleven improves on 1960's Rat Pack original with supernova casting, a slickly updated plot, and Steven Soderbergh's graceful touch behind the camera. Soderbergh reportedly relished the opportunity "to make a movie that has no desire except to give pleasure from beginning to end," and he succeeds on those terms, blessed by the casting of George Clooney as Danny Ocean, the title role originated by Frank Sinatra. Fresh out of jail, Ocean masterminds a plot to steal $163 million from the seemingly impervious vault of Las Vegas's Bellagio casino, not just for the money but to win his ex-wife (Julia Roberts) back from the casino's ruthless owner (Andy Garcia). Soderbergh doesn't scrimp on the caper's comically intricate strategy, but he finds greater joy in assembling a stellar team (including Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, and Carl Reiner) and indulging their strengths as actors. The result is a film that's as smooth as a silk suit and just as stylish. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars the boys are back.......2007-06-08

nice to have all the ocean series good entertainment for a rainy day for myself and guests

4 out of 5 stars Have you ever watched a film where you wanted the bad guys to win?.......2007-06-01

I have trouble calling this a remake, because it doesn't share much in common with the `rat pack' original except the name of the lead character and that it is a casino heist. Actually, this is a better film than its namesake, apart from the fact that the cast of the original was filled with entertainment legends.

Director Soderbergh takes a vacation from serious filmmaking with this film, which on his resume is something of a lark. Everyone seems to be having a good time and it is clear that the actors enjoyed making this film. The overhauled screenplay pops with snappy dialogue, riddled with deadpan humor and a decent, though somewhat far fetched plot. It has a little of the whimsical feel of `The Sting', though the screenplay isn't as strong. A crew of professional thieves plans to knock over three casinos on a fight night by raiding the impregnable vault that serves all three. The plan is elaborate, full of high tech wizardry, daring deceptions and acrobatic stunts. The caper runs into more than the normal amount of foul ups, but our devious team of burglars is always up to the task of working around the glitches.

The cast is very solid. George Clooney is perfectly cast as the brainchild of the scheme. He is dapper, macho and smooth with a sardonic wit that keeps the film's tone serious yet light. Brad Pitt plays the always eating Rusty, who is really the brains behind the operation, coordinating it flawlessly. Except for `The Mexican', this is much lighter material than Pitt usually tackles, yet he gives a suave performance seeming very comfortable with his character. Despite the fact that this is an ensemble cast, Pitt carries a lot of the weight and makes the story as close to believable as could be possible given its improbable nature.

Don Cheadle continues to impress, rendering a terrific demolitions expert. His cockney accent is great and with this part Cheadle shows once again what a terrific character actor he is. In a little twist of irony, Cheadle plays an analogous part in this film to that played by Sammy Davis, Jr. in the original, and he also played Sammy in the TV movie entitled `The Rat Pack'. Poor Andy Garcia has the thankless task of playing the heavy in a tongue-in-cheek film, but he does a marvelous job. Matt Damon plays the rookie, giving the character a charming naiveté and a mischievous bent. Julie Roberts is nothing more than a throw in, with a minor role as Ocean's ex-wife.

If you don't take this film too seriously, you are in for an entertaining evening. It is smartly done without too much melodrama, and provides just enough suspense and realism to keep it from being a farce.

5 out of 5 stars WOW DANG ONE OF THE BEST MOVE.......2007-05-08

    4 out of 5 stars stealing from a casino....crazy!.......2007-04-30

George Clooney plays Danny Ocean. Danny just got out of prison for a mistake he made 5 years ago. Along with that mistake, he lost his wife. Coming out of prison doesn't deter him from crime. He immediately rounds up 10 men to help him steal from a vault that stores money from 3 casinos. This is a big and dangerous mission. There has been 3 attempts to rob the casinos and none of them have been successful.

In the midst of their planning and training, an tidbit of information comes to light. The owner of these casinos is Terry Benedict (Garcia). That's not the important part. The important part is that Terry's current girlfriend is Tess (Roberts). Tess is Danny's ex-wife. So the question is...is Danny doing this for the money or is he doing this for his ex-wife? Of course, the gang is upset as it puts the mission in jeopardy.

Nonetheless, the mission continues with some adjustments. The question is will Ocean and his gang succeed with the mission?

I have to say that *Ocean's Eleven* is one of the best heist film that I've seen in recent years. I may not have agreed with the selection of actors but I do have to say that the chemistry between them was great.

With its fantastic comedy series Weeds, cable network Showtime finally gave up its also-ran status to HBO and found itself with a controversial, buzz-worthy show that was as hilarious as it was dark, one about a truly desperate housewife. A recent widow with two growing sons, Nancy Botwin (Golden Globe winner Mary-Louise Parker) looks like a typical resident of the affluent Southern California suburb of Agrestic. She keeps a clean, upscale house (with the help of a live-in maid), attends PTA meetings, goes to her kids' soccer games, makes frequent stops at the local coffee franchise.... and sells marijuana in order to make it all possible. Left with no way to support herself after her beloved husband's fatal heart attack, Nancy turns herself into the "suburban baroness of bud," dealing to her neighbors in the area, with the help of her supplier Heylia (Tonye Patano) and point man Conrad (Romany Malco). Nancy's clients run from the local councilman (Kevin Nealon) to the just-barely-legal students at the local community college, but many in Agrestic are still in the dark as to how she keeps her family afloat, including her best friend, the sardonic Celia (Elizabeth Perkins), a wife and mother whose blistering, withering put-downs could make Dorothy Parker cringe in fear. But like many small-business owners, Nancy yearns for more success and cash, and like her workaholic neighbors, finds keeping a balance between work life and home life to be extremely precarious at best.

While Desperate Housewives yearned to be a suburban satire with bite, Weeds was the real deal, skewering upper-middle class mores with a sharp eye, a keen wit, and a mostly forgiving heart. In episode after episode, the show's creative team (led by creator Jenji Kohan) pulled back the layers of Agrestic's superficiality to show what lies beneath the squeaky-clean exteriors and smiling faces; it turns out that hunger, fear, desire, and, yes, desperation aren't that far down. However, Weeds forsakes pulpiness and florid drama for biting yet affectionate humor--its heroine is a woman with sliding morals, but one you'll root for to the very end. The effervescent Parker, the only actress who can mix perkiness with morbidity in just the right amounts, anchored the show with her amazing turn as Nancy, who by the end of the first season had become a kind of soccer-mom version of Michael Corleone, entering a corrupt world with both trepidation and fascination--and totally enamored of the power it brought her. Also perfectly cast, Perkins found the role of a lifetime as the bitterly hilarious Celia, and entering the show in its fourth episode, Justin Kirk (Parker's co-star in Angels in America) proved to be a potent secret weapon as Nancy's brother-in-law Andy, a slacker who wasn't above peddling t-shirts to elementary school kids. As icky as these characters might appear on the surface, Weeds made them all immensely appealing and great company to be around. Don't say we didn't warn you: one hit and you'll be hooked on this show. The DVDs feature six episode commentaries with cast and crew, outtakes, original featurettes, a music video, and most enjoyably, Agrestic Herbal Recipes (for entertainment value only, we assume) and the "Smoke and Mirrors" marijuana mockumentary. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars Gets better with each episode.......2007-06-27

It started off a bit slow but I gave it a go and was really glad that I did........each episode is better than the last and now I can't wait for Season 2...........definitely a hit!

    5 out of 5 stars Highly addicting.......2007-06-18

When I first heard of this series, i thought it was a funny concept, but at the same time, i was skeptical. When i finally saw it, i was immediately sucked into the storylines, characters, and Weeds is now one of my favorite tv shows of all time, up there with buffy and six feet under. Worth the money, and worth your time.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good Soup Opera.......2007-06-01

I liked Weeds S1 it was interesting and kind of a novel idea, however overall I thought the acting was very wooden and contrived and some of the storylines were very unrealistic. This show seems like "Just Shoot Me" mixed with "The OC" with some drugs mixed in. I mean come on, no drug dealer is going to just have sex with a rival and back off, this is where the unreality becomes a little much, although the comedic nature of this series would explain this there wasn't much funny there. Overall the superficiality of this series is it's strength, otherwise we have another depressing journal of the death and destruction that is the real world of drugs that has touched everyone either directly or indirectly.

The best character is the drug dealing auntie who supplies the main character with her goods. I find the kids to be an uninteresting side story that are necessary to complete the setting only. The main character seems the least interesting to me, bumbling through it all with a blah attitude while things happen to her. The accountant is the most hilarious character coupled with the slacker brother in law, their adventures are the real comedy here. The chronicles of so called grown ups who are still teenagers is great.

This series is an above average one only because it's one of the premium channel series that can show anything it wants with no advertiser limitations. It's not particularly deep but is satisfying in its cliched "California" quirkiness and decadence that we all love to revel in. Yes this is the most decadent state in a decadent time, the great equalizing mediocrity that we are all a part of can only be laughed away so enjoy!

    4 out of 5 stars Fun.......2007-05-23

Take this for what it is, a time to relax and 'peek' into what might be. It begs the question, "Is there really a place like this?, knowing well that the writers might have patterned the series after a place and people (with some exaggerations) they had actually experienced. As indicated by my title, it is fun, it is something that could really happen to a young widow finding, suddenly, that she has to try to afford her two young sons the lifestyle to which they had become accustomed, basically just trying to make ends meet, missing having a father/husband around. However, every character, some more than others of course, has a funny edge. even the way it starts is funny, playing of the "sameness" of the residents of any real similar comunity.

    5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2007-05-23

This is one of the best shows on tv, I love it.....watch it over and over.

One Tree Hill: The Complete Second Season finds life in an uproar for virtually every major and minor character in the WB series set in One Tree, North Carolina. Basketball sensation Lucas Scott (Chad Michael Murray), illegitimate son of One Tree Hill's resident J.R.-like figure, car dealer, and all-around monster Dan Scott (Paul Johansson), has left town with his Uncle Keith (Craig Sheffer) to start a new life. (Keith himself has split One Tree to nurse a broken heart after his marriage proposal to Lucas's mom, Karen, played by Moira Kelly, was rejected.) It's not long, however, before Lucas has second thoughts, prompted in part by Dan's recent heart attack and the mess he (Lucas) left behind with two girls, Peyton (Hilarie Burton) and Brooke (Sophia Bush). Meanwhile, Lucas's half-brother, Nathan (James Lafferty), has married the former's lifelong best friend, Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz), a union approved by the bride's parents but not by Nathan's mother, Deb (Barbara Alyn Woods). (It should be mentioned that Nathan and Haley, as with nearly every other young person on this show, are not yet high school seniors. They only look much older.)

All that's just the first couple of episodes of season 2. In the remaining 21, Dan temporarily fools everyone into believing he's a changed man following his cardiac crisis. In fact, he's worse than ever, trying to wreck Nathan and Haley's marriage, attempting to buy Lucas's loyalties, driving Deb into a drug-addicted stupor, pulling the rug out from beneath Keith (who took over Dan's dealership during the latter's illness), and waging a war, of sorts, with basketball coach Whitey (Barry Corbin) for influence over Nathan's destiny. While all this is going on, Haley leaves Nathan to join a music group, Peyton finds success running an all-ages night at a new club opened by Karen, Lucas finds evidence that Dan is cheating the IRS, Brooke's once-wealthy parents go broke, and actress Sheryl Lee (Twin Peaks) turns up toward season's end playing a mysterious visitor with a surprising connection to a major character's past. Whew. If One Tree Hill's first season succeeded in part because series creator Mark Schwahn kept, for a while, a tight focus on the early, rocky relationship between Nathan and Lucas, the second season works as a frenetic, ensemble drama with elements of camp and absurdity. The above-mentioned reference to Dallas villain J.R. Ewing proves apt in more ways than one. The final episode of One Tree Hill's sophomore season ends with its own, not-so-subtle variation on the classic who-shot-J.R. cliffhanger, leaving open to debate which of many possible One Tree candidates might have committed a foul (if understandable) bit of vengeance against a certain bad dude one loves to hate. --Tom Keogh

    5 out of 5 stars Amazon service.......2007-02-06

Cannot really rate this DVD, it was a gift to our daughter and I really don't know anything about the show.

BUT, I did want to note the excellent service from Amazon. Apparently, the first shipment was lost during the recent snow storms we've had here in Colorado. We contacted Amazon, and they promptly shipped another copy to our daughter without any questions asked. Awesome service!

My 16 year old daughter just opened this Christmas gift. She went to play it and then told me that the entire DVD pkg. is out of order - what is supposed to be the first episode is actually the fourth, the second the eighth....AAARGH! Where do I go from here?

The classic combination of James Spader and William Shatner is just one of many reasons to savor the inaugural 17-episode season of Boston Legal. Making its highly rated ABC debut on October 3, 2004, this darkly comedic spinoff from The Practice looked like a formulaic reworking of creator David E. Kelley's previously successful series Ally McBeal, with similar plots and quirky characters enmeshed in personal and professional affairs of the heart at the prestigious Boston law firm of Crane, Poole & Schmidt. It quickly became apparent that Kelley, co-executive producer Bill D'Elia, and the show's magnificent ensemble cast were onto something equally fresh, funny, and infectiously entertaining.

Both Shatner and Spader won Emmys for their original roles on The Practice, and the priceless pairing of the erratic, egomaniacal senior partner Denny Crane (Shatner, doing the best work of his career) and ethically challenged attorney Alan Shore (Spader, likewise) signaled the arrival of one of the finest comedic duos in TV history. Waging a two-man war on political correctness, the boisterous has-been Denny loves the sound of his own name (the mere mention of "Denny Crane" qualifies as ego-stroking foreplay), unabashedly subjects female associates to his lascivious advances, and (in creator Kelley's words) "trades on the currency of his reputation" as an undefeated trial attorney. As the show's fascinating heart and soul, Alan Shore is a walking contradiction, and Spader plays him perfectly as a charismatic, self-loathing lothario who'll bend the law to suit his higher purposes. Deeply cynical yet fiercely committed to his own complex and compassionate moral code, he's brazenly open about his sexual appetites as he savors the affections of smart, sexy associates Sally Heep (Lake Bell), and Tara Wilson (Rhona Mitra), whose relationship with Shore grows strained as the season progresses.

While senior partner Paul Lewiston (Rene Auberjonois), senior associate and ex-Marine Brad Chase (Mark Valley), and junior associate Lori Colson (Monica Potter) struggle to maintain the firm's lofty reputation, the appearance of founding partner Shirley Schmidt (Candice Bergen) elevates Boston Legal to an even higher plane of serio-comic perfection. A former flame of Denny Crane's, Schmidt arrives in episode 11 (appropriately titled "Schmidt Happens") as common-sense negotiator with a rapier wit and a clanking pair of big brass cojones, fully capable of holding her own against the Crane/Shore juggernaut. And while "An Eye for an Eye" (episode 5) is a sublime example of Boston Legal's deft combination of lunacy and courtroom complexity, it's the deeper implications of episodes like "Tortured Souls" (15) and season finale "Death Be Not Proud" (tackling a dubious death sentence in Texas) that cast these rich and wonderful characters into sharper relief, baring their souls and the courage of their convictions.

With surprising departures (Lake Bell, in episode 13), new arrivals (Kerry Washington, as new associate Chelina Hall, in episode 15) and stellar guest stars including Larry Miller (as the eccentrically unstable founding partner Edwin Poole), Philip Baker Hall, Frances Fisher, Carl Reiner, Freddie Prinze Jr., Shelley Long, and late-season regular Betty White, Boston Legal gained a large and loyal following with exceptional writing, timely social relevance, and that rare quality of chemistry that guarantees long-term appeal. Nowhere is this more apparent than the now-famous Spader/Shatner "balcony scenes" that quickly became an episode-closing tradition, with staunch Republican Denny Crane and passionate Democrat Alan Shore reflecting upon their careers, current issues, and their own devoted friendship over brandy and cigars. With these two actors together, virtually every episode ends on a high note of pensive introspection, and Boston Legal becomes even greater than the sum of its parts. DVD extras are minimal (two featurettes with cast and producers, plus deleted scenes from episode 1) but enjoyably worthwhile. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully clever and funny.......2007-06-24

I absolutely love this show. Extremely funny, outrageously clever, and always on-point with issues that society is facing today. Absolutely a buy (great value too for the # of episodes you get). Grab season 2 as well so you can save on having to ship them seperately :) (you'll want the 2nd one after you watch the first).

5 out of 5 stars One of the best series on tv.......2007-06-12

This series combines smart writing with the talents of Candice Bergen, William Shatner and James Spader. The show is smart, capable of doing several story lines justice per episode, and really very funny. The only negative aspect about the DVDs is that the episodes do not have commentary tracks. I would LOVE to hear some of the comments the stars and creators have on this show. In closing, buy this now.

Great, recieved in great condition at a great price. I love this show.

5 out of 5 stars Boston Legal Season 1 DVD.......2007-06-07

This show is seriously funny. I was never a big fan of either William Shatner or James Spader, but they make this series come to life. This show addresses some topics that have been in the news recently and in the past in the form of lawsuits and defending criminals. In the mix is a lot of humor. I would definitely recommend this DVD set to anyone who watches Boston Legal and may have missed the 1st season, or for anyone who is interested in the show.
