In Independence Day, a scientist played by Jeff Goldblum once actually had a fistfight with a man (Bill Pullman) who is now president of the United States. That same president, late in the film, personally flies a jet fighter to deliver a payload of missiles against an attack by extraterrestrials. Independence Day is the kind of movie so giddy with its own outrageousness that one doesn't even blink at such howlers in the plot. Directed by Roland Emmerich, Independence Day is a pastiche of conventions from flying-saucer movies from the 1940s and 1950s, replete with icky monsters and bizarre coincidences that create convenient shortcuts in the story. (Such as the way the girlfriend of one of the film's heroes--played by Will Smith--just happens to run across the president's injured wife, who are then both rescued by Smith's character who somehow runs across them in alien-ravaged Los Angeles County.) The movie is just sheer fun, aided by a cast that knows how to balance the retro requirements of the genre with a more contemporary feel. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Just a little anxious to get up there and whoop E.T...........2007-07-03
This movie as off the charts with the special effects. Not to mention some of the best lines in any movie of the decade in which it was made.
Jeff Goldblum, Will Smith, Adam Baldwin, Judd Hirsh, Bill Pullman, Mary McDonnell, Vivica A. Fox, Harry Connick Jr., Brent Spiner and an ensemble cast too numerous to name have come together to create an "end of the world" story that triumphs in the spirit of the American Revolution. (And on July 4th nonetheless).
I'll never forget these words from the president's young daughter...
"Is mommy sleeping now?"
Yes, Mommy's sleeping.
if that exchange did not make you cry, you have no heart.
This movie has Hollywood written all over it but it's all good........2007-07-02
The movie trailer shows a picture of the White House...all of a sudden, its blown into smithereens by a laser blast!!! But then again the jacket to this disc also shows that also.
This popcorn flick was all that I hoped for, nothing but 100% of everything: action, drama, humor and suspense. Many people are justified in stating that the success of "Independence Day" comes from the fact that its nothing more than what its intended to be: FUN, period. However, in this day and age of constant threats to modern society from epidemics such as war and disease, "Independence Day" can suddenly mean more than just a cinematic escape from reality. Perhaps it symbolizes the power and determination of the human spirit to prevail against all odds. Well, I most certainly think so! Just observe the plot and you'll find out what I mean:
Several gigantic UFOs, dwarfing anything which mankind can possibly conceive, suddenly hover above major cities all over the world. Without warning, these alien ships simultaneously strike the heart of the cities with awesome laser beams, causing vast proportions of horrific destruction. Just when it seems that all is lost for the citizens of the Planet Earth, a courageous band of human rebels join forces to combat this seemingly impregnable terror. These rebels come from all walks of life, from the dead serious to the outrageously funny. You've got Will Smith, a fighter pilot with a mouth of a wise guy but having a heart of gold; Jeff Goldblum, the computer nerd who knows how to decode the alien bad guys; and Bill Pullman, the dedicated U.S. president who will stop at nothing to preserve the survival of the human race. Put them together and you have a trinity (respectively the heart, mind and soul) of the ultimate good guys to rally "mankind," a word as Pullman in the film eloquently states, "should have a new meaning to us all."
The spirit of this movie owes much to past multi-character disaster classics such as "Earthquake." If you are an avid fan of sci-fi flicks, the content and material of "Independence Day" might be familiar territory for you, but it's a treat to watch nonetheless.
So, do you feel the need to ignite that "fighting human spirit" in you? Then its time to place this on your cart or rush to your nearest video store and celebrate your "Independence Day!"
I hated this movie.......2007-05-31
This movie sucked big time. It was so Over the Top. One man takes on the galaxy with help from the President and a guy flying a crop duster. Gimme a break. Also, this movie sports some of the worst one liners.
Love It.......2007-05-15
I'm not usually one for action and too much excitement but this movie was exciting and funny and had a great message to it. I loved the movie and I think you probably will too.
entertaining annual event.......2007-05-12
We have been watching this movie almost yearly since we saw it the first time shortly after it came out. We had a vcr version and watched it in our travel trailer. Now with the dvd, we have introduced it to our youngest grandson. For him it is a change from his normal space adventure. And he loves it too.

While other films directed by Nicolas Roeg have attained similar cult status (including Walkabout and Don't Look Now), none has been as hotly debated as this languid but oddly fascinating adaptation of the science fiction novel by Walter Tevis. David Bowie plays the alien of the title, who arrives on Earth with hopes of finding a way to save his own planet from turning into an arid wasteland. He funds this effort by capitalizing on several highly lucrative inventions, and in so doing becomes the powerful leader of an international corporate conglomerate. But his success has negative consequences as well--his contact with Earth has a disintegrating effect that sends him into a tailspin of disorientation and metaphysical despair. The sexual attention of a cheerful young woman (Candy Clark) doesn't do much to change his outlook, and his introduction to liquor proves even more devastating, until, finally, it looks as though his visit to Earth may be a permanent one. The Man Who Fell to Earth is definitely not for every taste--it's a highly contemplative, primarily visual experience that Roeg directs as an abstract treatise on (among other things) the alienating effects of an over-commercialized society. Stimulating and hypnotic or frightfully dull, depending on your receptiveness to its loosely knit ideas, it's at least in part about not belonging, about being disconnected from the world--about being a stranger in a strange land when there's really no place like home. --Jeff Shannon.
Description
The Man Who Fell to Earth is a daring exploration of science fiction as an art form. The story of an alien on an elaborate rescue mission provides the launching pad for Nicolas Roeg's visual tour de force, a formally adventurous examination of alienation in contemporary life. Rock legend David Bowie completely embodies the title role, while Candy Clark, Buck Henry, and Rip Torn turn in pitch-perfect supporting performances. The film's hallucinatory vision was obscured in the American theatrical release, which deleted nearly twenty minutes of crucial scenes and details. The Criterion Collection is proud to present Roeg's full, uncut version, in this exclusive new director-approved high-definition widescreen transfer.

Outstanding Criterion Release.......2007-07-03
The Man Who Fell to Earth is a science fiction cult film from director Nicolas Roeg (Walkabout, Don't Look Now). It stars David Bowie as an alien who visits Earth seeking water for his home world which is barren. It is based on the Walter Tevis novel of the same name and this Criterion release of The Man Who Fell to Earth comes with the book as well. There are significant enough differences between the novel and the film that the novel is a worthy supplement to the experience of watching this movie. You will also want to check out the DVD extras in the same regard.
David Bowie is the title character in his only feature role. He is Thomas Newton and he only has to adjust his appearance a little bit to look somewhat human. That is if you think David Bowie even looks human because I don't, but I do realize he is...I think? Anyway, Thomas Newton rises to great wealth due to his society's advances in technology and his ability to create enterprises based on his patenting compilations of ideas that his world produced, nonexistent on Earth. He is trying of course to fund the shipment of water back to his home world. Thomas soon meets Mary-Lou (played by Candy Clark). Mary-Lou is your typical girl who introduces him to many of Earth's temptations. Thomas is soon inhibited by his aberrant consumption of alcohol and his fixation with television. It all has a very negative effect on him. Mary-Lou and his friend Nathan (Rip Torn) both eventually discover separately that Thomas is indeed an alien. After being revealed and after the government imprisons him, Thomas's inevitable downfall becomes apparent. We see him gradually accept failure in his task and grow increasingly negative in his disposition. He has truly fallen to Earth I suppose.
The big strengths in this film are primarily its cinematography. I like Nicholas Roeg's other films a lot so I'm aware that this is to be expected. I like the idea of a science fiction art film and overall I can really appreciate the fact that The Man Who Fell to Earth is not as in your face as most science fiction is today and was even back then in the mid 70s. However, this is almost too surreal and sedated for me. It was convincing but there were some long and boring stretches and I couldn't figure out why exactly, beyond the photography alone. It just seemed a lot longer than the story warranted. Also, I think I can draw the line between gratuitous nudity and appropriate nudity and I'm grown up enough to accept both. The Man Who Fell to Earth has much gratuitous nudity, but that was a sign of the times I guess so it's partially forgivable. There is more emotion and drive behind Newton in the Tevis novel and it seemed a bit more controlled as an existential piece of work. It doesn't matter though because with the Criterion release you are getting both and if you like to collect interesting and unique films that will have you talking then this set is worth owning. The film itself would probably get three stars from me but the Criterion release justifies four. It really is an exceptional package. The extras are outstanding and should help answer most questions you will have. Provoking movies like this one, whether they be good or bad, deserve the royal treatment so kudos to Criterion once again.
Plugging the square questions with circular anwers .......2007-07-01
Although this story has some pieces that don't quite seem to fit together smoothly, still somehow it works for me. If you're the type that needs a straight forward narrative with a very linear structure and basic, formulaic plot developments, then this isn't for you. This is an odd tale with heavy, underlying themes and a variety of profound layers. It might take a few viewings to absorb much of the details.
Well, I made an attempt to take it all in with a single look, but I found myself lost in some parts. But that's not to say I didn't enjoy the journey.
You've got Newton (David Bowie), who is an alien who crash lands on Earth. He makes a vast fortune with some unique inventions from his home planet. I believe he wants to use the money to get back and save his home planet, which is a dry and desolate place.
As the story strangely progresses, you begin to realize the symbolistic ambiguity with the title of the film. Newton falls into some very humanistic traps in his surroundings, with the fortune he amassed and his alcholic girlfriend.
There are some scenes with some bizarre but astounding imagery, plus some vivid sexual explorations that some people might be turned off by.
Overall, I give this strange movie an "A" for effort, although I think it loses a little something in the final product. Probably a movie I need to watch again to grasp it all.
Do you enjoy STRANGE?.......2007-06-08
I have always loved this movie. David Bowie, Candy Clark, Rip Torn & Buck Henry are sensational. This movie requires multiple viewings to catch the whole story and subtle details. The bonus features disc is really not necessary (and short) unless you're really into knowing everything about a movie and it's principals. If you like to think about and discuss a movie with friends, this is definitely the one.
Bazar Bowie.......2007-05-07
This was fun to watch if your a Bowie fan. If you do not want to see "that" much of the Bowster close your eyes. Other wise enjoy the weirdness....A bowl helps.
Kudos to Criterion.......2007-04-08
I saw this movie years ago on VHS. This is the ultimate for collectors.
Lots of extra goodies ala Criterion. Beatifully remastered. I have a couple other Roeg films released by Criterion, and again Criterion has come through with a quality product. If you've seen this film and liked it
than this is a must have. When I rented this on VHS, it was an unrated version, but this one has had some additional footage added. Charlie S.

What would the average sensible American do if he encountered a pulsing ball of protoplasm from outer space? That's right: he'd poke it with a stick. Thus begins the endearingly earnest and silly tale of The Blob. Young Steve McQueen takes on his first leading role as, um, Steve, a spunky teenager with plenty of heart. Steve sees the blob kill the local doc, but darn it, none of the town's adults will believe him! Yup, it's up to the teens to save the day! Steve and his trusty girlfriend Jane break their curfews(!) and head off into the night to find the Blob and warn the town. The Blob is a completely enjoyable watch from start to finish, offering the triple pleasures of 1950s morals, gee-whiz acting, and a whole lotta extras running around and screaming. The special effects, though primitive, certainly get the job done, and it is still a treat to watch the Blob ooze its way to its next meal. You may notice that the theme song is surprisingly bouncy for a horror flick ("Beware of the Blob! It creeps, and leaps, and glides and slides across the floor"). It was written by Hal David and a fresh young composer by the name of Burt Bacharach. --Ali Davis
Description
"Beware of the Blob!" One of the great cult classics, The Blob melds '50s schlock sci-fi and teen delinquency pics even as it transcends these genres with strong performances and ingenious special effects. Made outside of Hollywood by a maverick film distributor, a crew experienced in religious and educational shorts, and a collection of theatrical talent from Philadelphia and New York, The Blob helped launch the careers of superstud Steve McQueen and composer Burt Bacharach.
Customer Reviews:
Absorbing Performance.......2007-01-10
While Steve McQueen and the other human actors seem to be honing their acting skills, the Blob itself gives an absorbing performance. In addition to the monster's performance, the story is what makes this 1958 production an essential addition to any collection of science fiction movies. Like The Invasion of the Body Snatchers before it, The Blob deals with the idea of dormant alien life drifting through space, just waiting for a chance encounter with an unsuspecting planet. Hey, it could happen. It may have already happened.
As the song goes: "Beware of the Blob - it creeps and leaps and glides and slides...".......2007-01-02
In 1958, Paramount Pictures released THE BLOB, a modest sci-fi cinematic effort showcasing a struggling, up-and-coming actor named Steve McQueen in his first feature film starring role. THE BLOB - about a primal life form from outer space which comes to earth and begins to indiscriminately devour human flesh - made a killing at the box office and generated a 1972 sequel and a 1988 remake, as well as a Halloween parody by THE SIMPSONS. This movie is also known for its tongue-in-cheek theme song ("Beware of the Blob"), co-written by a pre-famous Burt Bacharach, which went on to become a top 40 hit.
The plot: Teenagers Steve Andrews (McQueen) and Jane Martin (Aneta Corsaut) are out on a date when they glimpse a falling star and attempt to pinpoint its location. Meanwhile, an elderly man comes upon the fallen meteor and pokes at it with a stick (never a sound move in first alien contacting), only to have the meteor break open and the semi-sentient, jelly-like substance within climb up and cling to his hand. The frantic numbnut runs around and is almost struck by Steve's car. Steve and Jane take the man to the hospital, where the jelly blob on the infected victim begins to grow further, eventually consuming its host. It then begins to treat the medical staff like a buffet; the blob inevitably gets out and begins snacking on every human in its path, ever growing larger and larger.
The townspeople are blissfully unaware of the goings-on, despite Steve's desperate attempts to warn them, until a blob assault in a movie theater finally clues in everyone. The town, naturally, falls into a panicked state as the frenzied citizenry mill around and the police strive to ineffectively battle the monstrosity. Finally, it's up to Steve to figure out how to vanquish the blob monster. Unfortunately, he figures it out before the annoying kid actor is eaten.
Absolutely, THE BLOB had its own share of shlock, but, within the confines of its B movie status and irregardless of the cheeky theme song, the cast and crew strived to tell a gripping sci-fi/horror story. The cheesy special effects don't hold up at all to modern day standards (the blob was created initially using a weather balloon and later with tinted silicone gel), and the blob, in today's age, certainly isn't about to realistically intimidate anyone, but there's still an element of nostalgic fun in watching the blob go oozing about its business and scaring the bejesus out of the film characters. The actors made the tale as credible as possible by playing it straight and serious. Kudos go to 27 year old Steve McQueen for convincingly playing a 19 year old. Apparently, McQueen wasn't well liked on the set (he was a prima donna and was in constant argument with the director), but he ended up turning in a charismatic leading man performance. He, evidently, was good enough here that it got him the lead in the television series WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE.
THE BLOB, with its display of 1950s sensibilities so different from today's mores and values, is a time capsule film in which the audience could hearken back to a more innocent time. Back then, as predominantly portrayed in cinematic films, even the delinquents end up being kinda square and wholesome. Put side by side with today's standards, it looks pretty unrealistic today. Anyway, THE BLOB is worth investing about 80 minutes of your time. It tells a decent monster attack story, the special effects are so hokey they're fun, the song is bubbly, and McQueen is very good. But that kid is still annoying.
The Blob: 5 stars for the movie, 1 star for Criterion........2006-12-17
First of all, I want to say that 1958's The Blob is a landmark picture and a fantastically fun sci-fi/horror film. Steve McQueen is perfect in it, and it's quite possibly the best sci-fi cheese to come out of the 50s.
HOWEVER, I'm fed up with the Criterion Collection. What this company seems to intend to do is snatch up the rights to many, many great movies, "class" them up with minimal special features, and sell them at obscene prices. This edition of The Blob has ONE DISC, and the only special features are two commentaries. And we have to cough up $40 to have it.
There are no other options; If you want to own this masterpiece, you have to be able to fork up forty dollars to do so.
Criterion is trying to target great films that should be enjoyed by everyone to a wealthy group of people.
The best way to watch this iconic film.......2006-07-20
As with other Criterion releases, this DVD gets right to the point. No annoying "coming soon" or other cross promotions.
This transfer is clear, but by this point, the film could do with a bit of restoration or at least color balancing. This is a limitation of the original film stock, not of the transfer.
I have watch the film both with and without the commentaries. The commentaries add quite a bit of behind the scenes information and allowed me to enjoy the film on a different level.
If you are a fan of Steve McQueen or of 1950's SF movies, then this is an essential movie. It is one of McQueen's breakthrough roles and one of the better "invasion" SF movies. Granted it was made on a shoe string budget, but it has more realistic characters than just about any other SF movie of its era.
Good Movie.......2006-03-13
I went ahead and ordered the Criterion version of this dvd based on other reviewers who said it was a high quality transfer, etc..
Yes it was good. I liked it.
I don't have anything to compare it to as far as a cheeper dvd so I can't comment on whether the colors are better, etc..
Highly recommended.

Ancient curses, all-powerful monsters, shape-changing assassins, scantily-clad stewardesses, laser battles, huge explosions, a perfect woman, a malcontent hero--what more can you ask of a big-budget science fiction movie? Luc Besson's high-octane film incorporates presidents, rock stars, and cab drivers into its peculiar plot, traversing worlds and encountering some pretty wild aliens. Bruce Willis stars as a down-and-out cabbie who must win the love of Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) to save Earth from destruction by Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg (Gary Oldman) and a dark, unearthly force that makes Darth Vader look like an Ewok. --Geoff Riley

What's Not to Love!.......2007-06-29
As I have recently become a solid fan Milla Jovovich and her work, I was compelled to see this movie again. I remember from my younger days seeing this film and not understanding that it was intended to be an action/comedy! Let me just say, when it comes to any movie that leans more toward comedy than action, this movie does it all!
The acting is superb in this movie. Everyone plays their roles perfectly. Gary Oldman, Ian Holm, Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, Chris Tucker, and dare I say even... Luke Perry. A very solid cast that don't take themselves too seriously and just seem to have fun in the film!
Of course, we have Willis saving the world; along with Tucker as an inadvertent side-kick; and the love interest and connection with Jovovich! This movie tackles every major genre all in one! Action, comedy, adventure, romance, and sci-fi all wrapped up in a fun-filled "B" movie that has become a cult classic!
For a good time, see this movie! If not just for Gary Oldman doing an awesome job as the evil man from the south, and a very big former professional wrestler as the United States President!
A change of heart.......2007-06-13
I first saw this film at the theater when it was first released. At the time, the slogan that went with it was "...go beyond Star Wars, go beyond Star Trek..."
Wow. That's a pretty bold statement. I had been a life long fan of both Star Trek and Star Wars as well us Luc Besson's previous work (Le Femme Nikita, and the masterful The Professional). I was really looking forward to this movie.
And then I was disappointed.
The film is visually stunning (obviously borrowing heavily from Blade Runner), but the movie was MUCH different than either Star Trek or Star Wars.
First of all, the film was VERY campy. It made no attempts to deliver a serious or believable story. Most of the characters delivered their lines as if they were all taking part in one huge inside joke.
Some of the cinematography was done is such a way that I felt as though I were watching an '80s rock video.
The special effects, however, are probably the biggest redeeming qualities of this film. They are absolutely impeccable. The costumes and set designs were very good as well.
But this movie could never even hope to hold a candle to the Star Wars or Star Trek franchise. It was more of a comedy than anything else.
To be quite honest, after I saw the movie.....I hated it.
Then came the VHS release. With some trepidation, I decided to rent it and give it another chance. This time, I knew what to expect. I knew that I wasn't going "beyond Star Trek" or "beyond Star Wars". I was able to watch the film a second time with no preconceived notions of what it was going to be like.....
.....and I actually ENJOYED it!
If taken for what it is (a sci-fi action-comedy), The Fifth Element is actually quite a well-crafted and executed little film. Just don't expect the film to deliver something better than what Star Wars or Star Trek has to offer.
I learned an important lesson from the marketing of this movie. It's best to go into a film without any ideas of what it will be like or what it SHOULD be like, despite what the advertisements may suggest.
All in all, I did buy a copy of the DVD for my collection and I do watch this movie from time to time. It's fun escapism, but Star Wars it's not.
One of the Best Sci Fi Movies Ever.......2007-06-12
I would rank this movie up there with the top 10 greatest Sci Fi movies. Special effects...stupendous. Storyline...excellent. Casting, Acting, Costumes...all top notch. If you don't own this movie, you should purchase it NOW!!
Thank you, French guy!.......2007-05-29
This is it, folks. An actual apex of film making, as only a French guy could bring.
And let me attest to this now: It's been BROUGHT!
LEON is probably my favorite movie of all time, but this movie just goes off in directions that no other film has gone before. I have now idea how this film can be so funny, so tragic, so inspiring, and so sad all at the same time, but it does, and it does it well.
Do you know what I'm most thankful for? That they didn't make a sequel. I (usually) really hate sequels, and a sequel to this would have blown. If you've seen Starship Troopers 2, then you know what I'm talking about.
So what would Marc Antony do? DUH! He'd drop Cleopatra like a small pox scab and run off with Mila Jovivic! (is that how you spell her name?)
One of my favorite movies.......2007-05-17
I love this movie, in fact I'm going to have to watch it again this week now that I have been reminded I have it. Oh yeah, superbit is pretty cool, but I bought the superbit version as a gift for my parents.

More remake than sequel, Men in Black II safely repeats everything that made Men in Black the blockbuster hit of 1997. That's fine if you loved the original's fresh humor, weird aliens, and loopy ingenuity, but as sequels go, it's pure déjà vu. Makeup wizard Rick Baker is the only MIB alumnus who's trying anything new, while director Barry Sonnenfeld and costars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones (as alien-fighting agents Jay and Kay, respectively) are on autopilot with an uninspired screenplay. The quest of a multitentacled alien--on Earth in the form of Lara Flynn Boyle--for the light of Zartha requires Jay to deneuralize Kay, whose restored memory contains the key to saving the planet. The tissue-thin premise allows all varieties of special effects--mostly familiar, with some oddly hilarious new stuff tossed in for good measure. Certainly enjoyable as a popcorn distraction, but the MIB magic has worn a bit thin. --Jeff Shannon

Another weird story.......2007-07-02
Kay is gone, J is looking a partner like Kay. A snake lady shows up, other things happen too.
Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith, Lara Fline, Boyle.
The men should have stayed gone.......2007-06-25
I remember having such high hopes for this movie, but it turned out that the movie trailer had served up all the laughs and the rest of the flick was shockingly dull and un-orginal. But I get it. Sequels are hard and Hollywood are usually a greedy lot. The plot re: returning the Light couldn't have been more campy or paper thin if you tried. But, and it's a big but, it may have worked a little better for children. I'm not sure. I don't have children. Anyhoot, if you have absolutely nothing to do or you're searching for what NOT to do with a sequel, check this film out. Otherwise, watch the first movie and then pretend that this one never happened. Where's a good nuturalizer when you need one?
A Good Sequel.......2007-02-19
A very good comedy, Men in Black II picks up four years after the first movie left off, and continues to shed light on Earth's finest agents. This time the arrival of an unexpected guest from outer space will rock their world...
Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith, Lara Flynn Boyle and Rosario Dawson (both of whom are HOT!), and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well.
The setting, the plot, the music, the humor, and the dialogues are all wonderful!
Overall, it is a movie worth watching, and even though quite silly at times, it will surely put you in a good mood! 4.5 Stars
Where this sequel is strong, it is v-e-r-y strong. Where it is weak, it is v-e-r-y weak........2007-02-17
Mr. Jones and Mr. Smith are back and, IMHO, and their chemistry is as good if not better than in the original (this time IMHO Jones deserved top billing). Rip Torn is given some lines that I'm sure made him wonder if the $$$ he received from being in the second movie was worth the public embarrassment. Tony Shalhoub, on the other hand, is hilarious during the deneuralizer scenes (even though the writers saddled him with stolen lines).
On the other hand, with the exception of Johnny Knoxville as Scrad/Charlie, the villians are downright awful, and, as much as I like Patrick Warburton's other work, his short appearance here was pretty bad.
The Superbit technology doesn't get as many opportunities to shine as in MIB, although it is quite noticeable during the first subway scene and at the end. I'm still impressed enough with Superbit to choose it over other formats, even if I sacrifice the DVD "bonus features" to have it.
Men In BlackU.......2006-12-13
This movie is about two men who must stop aliens from attacking the earth. They are funny and couragousat the same time.I thought the show was exciting because two men fighting aliens.I would recommend this show Men In BlackU because very funny movie.

In the first and finest RoboCop movie, director Paul Verhoeven combined near-future science fiction with a keen sense of social satire--not to mention enough high-velocity violence to satisfy even the most voracious bloodlust. In Starship Troopers, Verhoeven and RoboCop cowriter Ed Neumeier take inspired cues from Robert Heinlein's classic sci-fi novel to create a special-effects extravaganza that functions on multiple levels of entertainment. The film might be called "Melrose Place in Space," with its youthful cast of handsome guys and gorgeous women who look like they've been recruited (and in some cases they were) from the cast of Beverly Hills 90210. Viewers might focus on the incredible, graphically intense action sequences (definitely not for children) in which heavily armed forces from Earth go to off-world battle against vast hordes of alien "bugs" bent on planetary conquest. The attacking bugs are marvels of state-of-the-art special-effects technology, and the space battles are nothing short of spectacular. But Starship Troopers is more than a showcase for high-tech hardware and gigantic, flesh-ripping insects. Recalling his childhood in Holland during the Nazi occupation, Verhoeven turns this epic adventure into a scathingly funny satire of fascist propaganda, emphasizing Heinlein's underlying warning against the hazards of military conformity and the sickening realities of war. It's an action-packed joy ride if that's all you're looking for, but Verhoeven has a provocative agenda that makes Starship Troopers as smart as it is exciting. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Cheesy Goodness It's A Bunch Of Calcium In This One .......2007-07-02
I have never seen the entire movie. I always catch this movie in the middle of it. But from what I have seen this is one of the worst movies ever. But that is what makes it great. Lame monsters and terrible over dramatic acting team up to make a B movie classic. Now if you think this is an actual "good" movie you have some issues. If you appreciate cheese flowing through your tv screen into your living and down the hall out of the window and down the street then this is for you.
The Movie Rips the Heart Out of the Story.......2007-06-22
Robert Heinlein's 1959 Hugo Award winning novel Starship Troopers is the inspiration for this very loose movie adaptation. Heinlein was a 1928 graduate of the Naval Academy and the author of over thirty science fiction novels. Starship Troopers encouraged the growth of the military science fiction subgenre.
Literature is a springboard for ideas, insights and intellectual growth but science fiction rarely aspires or reaches such heights. When I first read the novel as a teenager it provided insights into how a society might be organized and in the years since it has been a springboard for new ideas and growth. I'm not saying the novel is great literature but it is superior science fiction. It presents a plausible future society with an appropriate intellectual and philosophical framework. It is the philosophical aspect that is at the heart of the novel. This movie rips that heart out of the story.
Written during the height of the Cold War, the novel was the means by which Heinlein argued for a strong military. The story also is a vehicle to present his libertarian political ideas. While the story does contains more introspection, exposition, and character discussion than is common in the genre it has also been criticized as exceedingly pro-military and lacking in character depth and development. The story is pro-military but I do not agree that it lacks character development. However, one must remember that, unlike most science fiction, Heinlein was presenting ideas with the novel, not merely a story about killing alien bugs.
If the movie stood alone I might be able to recommend it based on some fine special effects, truly unworldly aliens and great action scenes but since I read and enjoyed the novel I could not enjoy this travesty of a movie.
Recommendation: Read the novel, skip the movie.
Kyle Pratt
Does Not Do The Book Justice.......2007-06-08
I was excited to learn that a movie was being made of "Starship Troopers", a favorite novel of my teen-years, and even more excited that Paul Verhoeven would be directing it since he had previously taken a much more mediocre story (Robocop) and made an excellent action film out of it. Unfortunately, the movie "Starship Troopers" does not live up to the promise of the original - highly controversial - novel.
Of course, it is hardly unusual to feel let down by film adaptations of favorite books. The screen-writer's need to compress into a couple hours a story that may have involved the satisfied reader for several days guarantees that something will be left out that one really wishes had been left in. Nevertheless, I felt that the screen writing took far too many liberties with Robert A. Heinlein's novel, and the film suffered as a result.
As one example, the original novel was full of observations about the responsibility of people to 'serve' society before becoming "citizens" with the right to vote and participate in the political process - and this aspect became controversial because of Heinlein's emphasis on military service. The movie touches upon this, but quickly simplifies it into a stilted fascist state divided between the non-participating "civilians" and the military veteran "citizens". While even that could have made for some interesting plot development, the film proceeds to ignore it completely to focus instead on soldiers in an interstellar war who frequently seem to treat combat more like a football match - even after they have suffered shocking casualties. (A more careful reading of the book, by the way, will find that many forms of service to society other than military were included among the things responsible people could do on their path to citizenship. I am afraid it would take too long to include that here, though, and suggest that anyone interested simply read the book.)
Finally, there is the matter of the characters. Heinlein had strong views on the utter pointlessness of racism. He chose to create a future in which racism was so completely extinct that no one at any point in the book ever comments, or even thinks descriptively about other characters in terms of race. But he does leave enough clues in the text so that you know that the central character - Rico - is Filipino, not the white guy (Casper Van Dien) presented in the film. Once again, I find it unfortunate that most of the book's more progressive ideas were erased by the film-makers and more so that having done this, they then fail to develop any storyline around the evidently fascist state they have created.
This does not mean the film was a total waste. As a low-brow action picture it is entertaining. But I really think the book furnished material that could have made a far better movie, with greater depth to both the characters and their situation, and I continue to hope that it will be re-made some day into a more faithful adaptation of Heinlein's original novel.
A little campy............2007-05-25
This is hard one to nail down. It is fun, campy, it makes you wonder what you would do if this was really real. A little on the gory side, but you can understand where the characters are coming from; I have felt like several of them. Lots of action, fun and friends that don't usually enjoy this kind of movie has watched and enjoyed it.
SC FI FUN.......2007-05-23
This movie is just fun, almost funny at times. Not to be taken seriously.

CAT-WOMEN OF THE MOON who don't take kindly to trespassers on their lunar paradise. Then stick around a little longer for a remake of the same story,
MISSILE TO THE MOON, which tosses in giant spiders and rock creatures for maximum monster mayhem. Finally, return to home planet for
THE DAY IT CAME TO EARTH, when a flaming meteor crash-lands in a small swamp town and unleashes a shambling zombie terror. You'll never look at the stars the same way again after this queasy quartet of extra-terrestrial epics!

Alien movies.......2007-01-10
Purchased for nostalgia sake. Parents used to drop me off w/ a girlfriend at the movie theater to see double features. We were only six. Could you imagine doing that today? I remember Moon women and other really bad missle to moon type movies. They're good for a Friday night giggle. These 4 CDs are well packaged and enjoyable to look at as well as play.
A rocket blast from the golden past........2006-06-29
Forgive the rap. These movies, although not the eye-popping ilk of Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers, or War of the Worlds, or even Invaders From Mars, are still worthy additions to anyone's canon of what goes for classic science-fiction. Sure, the sets move when the actors bump them in Catwomen, and the so-called Brain is barely believable in Planet Arous, and the sets still move in Missile To The Moon, and the acting of The Day It Came To Earth has to be seen to be believed, but what is required here (as even in Star Wars) is a suspension of disbelief. It seems to me that as movies get more sophisticated with the special effects, there isn't as much of a challenge being demanded of with our imaginations. It's as if the work is being done for us. See these movies not for their flaws, but for the light and shadow of mystery that is still in each one---even if you have to look a little harder than Close Encounters of the Third Kind to find it . . .
more like cheese attack!!!!.......2006-06-24
these movies are the worst, and i just can,t believe i really bought these turkeys, the PITS!!!!!!!!!!!

Sarah (a teenage Jennifer Connelly) rehearses the role of a fairy-tale queen, performing for her stuffed animals. She is about to discover that the time has come to leave her childhood behind. In real life she has to baby-sit her brother and contend with parents who don't understand her at all. Her petulance leads her to call the goblins to take the baby away, but when they actually do, she realizes her responsibility to rescue him. Sarah negotiates the Labyrinth to reach the City of the Goblins and the castle of their king. The king is the only other human in the film and is played by a glam-rocking David Bowie, who performs five of his songs. The rest of the cast are puppets, a wonderful array of Jim Henson's imaginative masterpieces. Henson gives credit to children's author and illustrator Maurice Sendak, and the creatures in the movie will remind Sendak fans of his drawings. The castle of the king is a living M.C. Escher set that adults will enjoy. The film combines the highest standards of art, costume, and set decoration. Like executive producer George Lucas's other fantasies, Labyrinth mixes adventure with lessons about growing up. --Lloyd Chesley

Labyrinth ~ David Bowie.......2007-07-03
This is a great movie specially for the kids. It also has a great soundtrack as well and excellent graphics. Also a Must own for any David Bowie Works Collecter. Also not bad for those capturing that era of time and those young at heart. thumbs up.
Came in perfect condition.......2007-06-27
I have always loved this movie since I was a kid. It's a bit cheesy for an older crowd but it's a good time and has a lot of good songs in it.
David Bowie Fans.......2007-06-27
If you love magic and fairytales this is the movie for you! Granted it is a bit older, but David Bowie plays a great role and sings you into this magical world. I had never seen it and bought it because he was in it. My stepmother loves him too so of course I bought her a copy. If you have young ones or are just young at heart this is the movie for you!!!
Kid friendly w/ a dash of adventure. .......2007-06-27
I think the title say's it all. I remember seeing this movie when I was a kid, it was a big thing in my home as I grew up listening to Bowie right down from his Ziggy days. I had forgotten how that felt until my daughter came home one afternoon telling me about this movie her teacher showed the class during the last week of school... I can't remember exactly how she explained her view of the movie, but I knew exactly what she was talking about and began singing some of the songs in it... "You remind me of the babe.. The Babe? The babe with the power....." And she beamed a brilliant smile as she said "Yes! that one..." To this day, that movie gets more play then any disney movie my kids have.. They adore watching that movie.. often going round singing the very same somes... I was glad of the reminder my daughter brought hoem of a childhood long since gone. Even more that I found the movie..
I love David Bowie.......2007-06-08
I cant help myself, David Bowie is my hero. And Jennifer Connelly shines in this movie as well

This imaginative summer comedy from director Barry Sonnenfeld (Get Shorty) is a lot of fun, largely on the strength of Will Smith's engaging performance as the rookie partner of a secret agent (Tommy Lee Jones) assigned to keep tabs on Earth-dwelling extraterrestrials. There's lots of comedy to spare in this bright film, some of the funniest stuff found in the margins of the major action. (A scene with Smith's character being trounced in the distance by a huge alien while Jones questions a witness is a riot.) The inventiveness never lets up, and the cast--including Vincent D'Onofrio doing frighteningly convincing work as an alien occupying a decaying human--hold up their end splendidly. --Tom Keogh

Pure entertainment.......2007-05-12
I watch movies simply to be entertained. I don't want to bite my nails and I don't want to be taught a lesson. I just want to escape for a couple of hours. This movie gives me what I want.
Missed some great acting.......2007-05-05
Living Fossil's spouse here. Tommy Lee and Will are not the stars here-it's Vincent D'onofrio as The Bug, an amazing comic and scary performance by a vastly underrated actor, and one of my favorites.
As camp as Rocky Horror, as rompingly satirical as Monty Python; a keeper.......2007-03-24
I'm betting that this little movie will be combed over twenty years from now by film scholars, but in the meantime my wife and I love to watch it again and again, sort of like the way one will watch Casablanca or The African Queen or 2001, A Space Odyssey, or Alien, and a whole lot of others, over and over without getting tired of doing so, while always finding some nuance or angle, or a laugh, missed before.
This is at once a camp put-on of practically every B-grade sci-fi movie of the fifties, while paying reverent homage to the genre, and it cross-references other works, such as "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," as mentioned in another review, and the snappy dialogue of a Howard Hawks or Michael Curtiz movie of the forties. You watch it and you will find more.
The quick, witty dialogue and cuteness just add to the fun. Smith and Jones are a terrific stand up comic act, Linda Fiorentino spices it up, Tony Shalhoub might have stolen the show with his sleazy pawn shop owner cameo if it hadn't been for Vincent d'Onofrio as the big bad bug, a show-stopping piece of work if I ever saw one, and then there is Rip Torn in the unlikely role of the uptight Zed. Actually, Barry Sonnenfeld, the director, got fine performances out of his entire cast. It is hard to name one without naming them all, but I'll leave it there. And the music? Well, it's right out of this world, along with the makeup.
We don't buy many DVD's of movies, sticking pretty well to proven classics in the purchases we do make, so you can see what we think of this one; it's a keeper.
A movie worth watching!.......2007-02-19
A very good comedy, Men in Black sheds light on a secret government agency that monitors alien activity.
Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith, Linda Fiorentino (who is HOT!), and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well.
The setting, the plot, the music, the humor, and the dialogues are all wonderful!
Overall, it is a movie worth watching, and even though quite silly at times, it will surely put you in a good mood!
Great movie made even better by Superbit.......2007-02-17
Mr. Jones' and Mr. Smith's chemistry in this movie is remarkable (and Rip Torn and Tony Shalhoub are great, too). I normally avoid buying DVDs of comedies because for me even the best don't always hold up well after repeated viewings (they get stale). This one definitely maintains its freshness.
I was skeptical about the "Superbit" version, given the over-hype of most video and sound technologies, but, since I was able to get it "pre-owned" at a good price, I figured "Why not?". Visually, it's stunning, and the audio is awesome. In the future, if there's a Superbit version of a movie I want to buy, that's the one I'll get.
