Many previous reviewers have praised this film, in particular the VHS version. I am in their camp, but having recently purchased the DVD version, due to a cassette accident, I have to say that the DVD version is a poor substitute. The DVD release is awash in a red tint, and many scenes are simply too dark to view. Such a pity, as I originally found the cinematography in this film spectacular.

So, i love this version of Twelfth Night - it's the best one out there! The product arrived after a couple of weeks, which was kind of a pain because i needed it for school, but it worked out. The DVD was in good condition and has good picture, no problems, and will last longer than the VHS.

This could have been a 5 star movie because it is hard for me to follow the dialect without subtitles though the acting by the cast was what made up for this. The cinematography is great and was sentimental seeing the coast of Cornwall. I saw this movie primarily cause of Imogen Stubbs playing the part of a tomboy as being plausable because of a boyish figure like Hilary Swank, who is a hotty too. I found Imogen attractive in other roles and was curious as to how i would see her. Well it was amusing to watch the scenes where her cover could have been revealed whether or not she was fooling anyone i could not care cause she still looked fine as a woman to me. One particular time was when an instructor was correcting her posture during fencing training at the military academy. Later I enjoyed her swordsmanship in a duel that was surprisingly aggressive so that you would not mind having her around alot enjoying life. There is a relationship between twins that is very poinyant during the beginning and at the end of the film that Imogen had part into that is worth noting.

4 out of 5 stars Ooh, so hot but you're breakin' my heart!.......2007-02-19

"Twelfth Night" may be one of Shakespeare's lesser known plays but this production really hit it with my entire family - even my two sons, ages 15 and 11, loved it! The trailer/teaser for the movie played up the gender-bender aspects of the plot but don't be misled - there's nothing gay about this movie. "Twelfth Night" is all about mistaken identity, wistful and fruitless love, and runaway egos. All's well that ends well, and all does. Ben Kingsley as Feste is my favorite character, and his song at the movie's close really wraps things up well. He, Helena Bonham-Carter, and Nigel Hawthorne are the best known members of what proved to be a very good cast. So, why not 5 stars??? I am profoundly deaf. The first time I saw this movie, it was on VHS with poor-to-average closed captioning. I so looked forward to seeing it on DVD. The DVD version that I purchased is NOT CLOSED CAPTIONED! What's with that! Just copy the text from Shakespeare's play and add it to the DVD! I simply cannot believe that this is happening in the 21st Century. I now HATE this product and feel quite slighted by the people responsible for making it available to the public.

Despite voluminous protest and nitpicking criticism from loyal fans of the original 1978-80 TV series, the 2003 version of Battlestar Galactica turned out surprisingly well for viewers with a tolerance for change. Originally broadcast on the Sci-Fi Channel in December 2003 and conceived by Star Trek: The Next Generation alumnus Ronald D. Moore as the pilot episode for a "reimagined" TV series, this four-hour "miniseries" reprises the basic premise of the original show while giving a major overhaul (including some changes in gender) to several characters and plot elements. Gone are the flowing robes, disco-era hairstyles, and mock-Egyptian fighter helmets, and thankfully there's not a fluffy "daggit" in sight... at least, not yet. Also missing are the "chrome toaster" Cylons, replaced by new, more formidable varieties of the invading Cylon enemy, including "Number Six" in hot red skirts and ample cleavage, who tricks the human genius Baltar into a scenario that nearly annihilates the human inhabitants of 12 colonial worlds.

Thus begins the epic battle and eventual retreat of a "ragtag fleet" of humans, searching for the mythical planet Earth under the military command of Adama (Edward James Olmos) and the political leadership of Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell), a former secretary of education, 43rd in line of succession and rising to the occasion of her unexpected Presidency. As directed by Michael Rymer (Queen of the Damned), Moore's ambitious teleplay also includes newfangled CGI space battles (featuring "handheld" camera moves and subdued sound effects for "enhanced realism"), a dysfunctional Col. Tigh (Michael Hogan) who's provoked into action by the insubordinate Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff), and a father-son reunion steeped in familial tragedy. To fans of the original BG series, many of these changes are blasphemous, but for the most part they work--including an ominous cliffhanger ending. The remade Galactica is brimming with smart, well-drawn characters ripe with dramatic potential, and it readily qualifies as serious-minded science fiction, even as it gives BG loyalists ample fuel for lively debate. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars superb - so say we all.......2007-06-12

This is an outstanding piece of television. The acting is a cut above the TV sci-fi norm, and the plot development excellent. This led into one of the best sci-fi series for many years, and the pilot shows why.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Myth and execution. wow. but buy it with season one bundled together.......2007-06-08

The original miniseries is a treat. If you are looking for a new myth to add to today's world, everything adds up in this one. Besides the beautiful views, artful cinematography and the convincing acting, the unceasing parade of interesting changes makes every scene fodder for a future episode that I am looking forward to. This story follows convolutions and intricacies of classic tales of empire building and rending apart. Every episode has ties both to the present day and to our own ancient times. It's filled with the whole depth of the human psychological experience. It's surreal, effective and this world and these characters are now a permanent part of my inner world.

5 out of 5 stars Mistake I made.......2007-06-04

When I saw the intro of the miniseries, I really didn't expect anything good. I turned away and I didn't looked back until one day I didn't have nothing to do. When I revisited the series again, I realized my mistake because this series is one of the best I have seen. It makes you question many things about our society and religion. I think this series is even better than many of big-budget movies.

5 out of 5 stars A solid spectacular beginning to an amazing series.......2007-05-14

This is in many ways the most exciting part of the entire series kicking off quite literally with a (sultry) bang. Most exciting though is that many of the narrative threads only now seeing the light of day were right there at the very beginning. A nuanced, complex and often dark series this show bears no resemblance at all to the original disco-infused cotton candy concoction; instead this is the Star Trek that should have been - darker, more intelligent, yet ultimately the most hopeful.

Amazon.com essential video

When Unbreakable was released, Bruce Willis confirmed that the film was the first in a proposed trilogy. Viewed in that context, this is a tantalizing and audaciously low-key thriller, with a plot that twists in several intriguing and unexpected directions. Standing alone, however, this somber, deliberately paced film requires patient leaps of faith--not altogether surprising, since this is writer-director M. Night Shyamalan's daring follow-up to The Sixth Sense. While just as assured as that earlier, phenomenal hit, Unbreakable is the work of a filmmaker whose skill exceeds his maturity, its confident style serving a story that borders on juvenile. However, Shyamalan's basic premise--that comic books are the primary conduit of modern mythology--is handled with substantial relevance.

Willis plays a Philadelphia security guard whose marriage is on the verge of failing when he becomes the sole, unscathed survivor of a devastating train wreck. When prompted by a mysterious, brittle-boned connoisseur of comic books (Samuel L. Jackson), he realizes that he's been free of illness and injury his entire life, lending credence to Jackson's theory that superheroes--and villains--exist in reality, and that Willis himself possesses extraordinary powers. Shyamalan presents these revelations with matter-of-fact gravity, and he draws performances (including those of Robin Wright Penn and Spencer Treat Clark, as Willis's wife and son) that are uniformly superb. The film's climactic revelation may strike some as ultimately silly and trivial, but if you're on Shyamalan's wavelength, the entire film will assume a greater degree of success and achievement. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Unbeatable!.......2007-06-12

Although Shyamalan's "Sixth Sense" perhaps had more chills and more of a classic twist-ending - I personally think "Unbreakable" is his best film. I'm not sure if you would call it's ending a "twist," but it made me gasp when it suddenly brought a whole landscape of emotion into focus with an amazing depth of field.

Furthermore, this movie has one of the most interesting characters I've ever seen on screen. Samuel L. Jackson plays a precise and learned art dealer with a special affinity for original classic comic book drawings. His genetic affliction limits the physical activity he can engage in, but his imagination has always been free to entertain strange possibilities. This truly is an original portrayal that could never typecast Jackson. His role is not as romantic lead, not as supporting character actor, not as doctor, lawyer, merchant... It's what he is that in the end creates the shock of brilliant resolution.

This is a movie whose intricacies will haunt you long after the fact. And even if you never had any interest in comic books, you will probably walk away from `Unbreakable" with a new respect for what Joseph Campbell might call their "power of myth."

One word about the availability of this film - I see a lot of the single-disc versions of it are available only in "Region 2" DVD format. You would need a "Multi-Region" or "Universal" DVD player to play these versions. As I understand it, all DVD players are manufactured with the capability of playing all DVDs. However, the players are then set by distributors to play in only one region, most often the US/Canada Region 1 - in order to block overseas bootlegging versions and other illicit overseas offerings.
There are on-line sites presumably listing decoding sequences that will allow you to "unlock" your specific DVD player so it will play all regions. However most people I've talked with have found these decoding sequences don't work. This can be frustrating because it seems an increasing number of English or foreign movies and comedy series are being offered only in non-Region 1 formats lately.
So if you want to buy one of the single-disc Region 2 versions of "Unbreakable" listed on this website, you might need to consider buying a "Multi-Region" DVD player on-line, or else you might want to go to an ethnic neighborhood (such as an East Indian community) in a large city to find a Multi-Region player.

4 out of 5 stars For Real Comic Book Fans.......2007-06-05

Unbreakable is about the mythology behind comic book superheroes and the purposes that each of us have in life. The film opens with the birth of a baby boy with all four of his limbs broken. He is Elijah Price, who is played by Samuel L. Jackson, and he has type I OI or brittle bone disease. As his life goes on, he gets the nickname of "Mr. Glass" as up the point of present time in Unbreakable, Elijah had broken bones in his body 57 times. Elijah is motivated early on to socialize in some capacity by his mother and his primary interest becomes comic books. As he gets older he soon begins to question what the reason is for his own existence and comes to the conclusion that if people like him exist with his weakness, then surely there must be someone on the other end of the spectrum with massive strengths. Elijah believes there is nothing scarier than to live life without knowing your purpose and he makes the assertion that there are in fact real-life superheroes.

Bruce Willis plays David Dunn, a security officer, who, unlike Elijah, is trying to find his own purpose in life. He gave up his football career for his wife but now his marriage is falling apart. David survives a train wreck that kills 131 people, and he is the only survivor. He was completely unharmed. Elijah believes David to be a real superhero and gradually confronts David with his theory. David's son Joseph believes Elijah and assists David in finding out more about his potential powers. Just to add, I'm of the opinion that it is an absolute pleasure to watch Willis and Jackson act in pretty much anything.

As with any M. Night Shyamalan film, giving too much away is hugely detrimental to the experience and please know that this film is entirely worth going into with no more information then I have already provided. What Shyamalan has done here in retrospect, while considering the recent onslaught of big-budget comic book movies, is create a completely unconventional yet convincing adaptation of comic book heroes' origins. At the same time Unbreakable celebrates the mythology behind these fictional characters. It takes a profound imagination to come up with a screenplay that gives this concept the treatment that Shyamalan has. It is the kind of concept that might have taken almost a lifetime of brainstorming.

A friend of mine once said that the Sixth Sense was a gigantic and nearly perfect movie for absolutely everyone, while as a comic book fan Unbreakable was tailored made perfectly for him. Though I'm half the comic book fan he is, I concur with that assessment enough to confidently invoke it hear. If you truly love comic books, Unbreakable is your film. If you are not a lover of comic books, then try to walk into this film expecting little action and you shouldn't be disappointed.

It can be argued that Shyamalan has lost his way in recent years, although he does retain his technical prowess even now. Nevertheless, Unbreakable is still a joy to watch and is a shining example of Shyamalan during his most inspired and generative phase.

4 out of 5 stars review.......2007-06-01

I'll admit: I've only seen a couple of Shyamalan's other movies, but I didn't like them. I'll admit: I like comic books.

I'll try to keep objective to this movie [as opposed to ranting about Shyamalan's other movies].

The first time I saw Unbreakable, the overall movie generally seemed slow and anticlimactic. However, after a few years I had the urge to see it again, and the second time through was much more enjoyable. The movie starts right off into the main plotpoint: the protagonist is on a train, it crashes, and somehow he walks out of a hospital bed unharmed. The use of color-themes throughout the movie are very alike to comic books. And as the story progresses, this becomes very obvious. As the movie starts, most of the colors are undersaturated and almost dull. But when the story picks up, different colors just jump out. This is a great style of bringing the viewer's attention to something (something comic books uses often).

The overall tone of the characters is set to show: these aren't supposed to be in your face action-packed characters from movies like X-Men or Batman or the like. These characters are supposed to feel like everyday characters. They're not supposed to shine above anyone else. They're supposed to be experiencing everyday life stuff: marital problems, a father trying to bond with his son. The only difference is that something extraordinary has been suddenly discovered by someone who is ordinary: the main character is an everyday man who finds out he can't be harmed. I'll be honest: the movie isn't highly-dramatic. But it's probably a realistic way of showing how an everyday guy is trying to come to terms with something not-so-everyday.

I found the individual characters very well-developed in the respect that they are meant to represent everyday people with an unusual situation thrust upon them. It's not as if real-life-dad and real-life-mom are going to react to this situation by saying, "Hey, maybe you should make a costume out of bright spandex or colorful leather and fight crime with a lot of publicity!" The hero is a husband and father trying to deal with a troubled marriage and a son affected by that troubled marriage. His wife is a wife and mother, trying to keep moving through her life despite the hard marriage. The son is a kid; what do kids do? Over-react. He tries all he can to make sure his parents are happy while at the same time trying to prove his dad is a superhero. It might come off as annoying, but I'm sure anyone can agree kids who over-react are annoying.

If you have the attention span of a five-year-old, where everything has to be fast-paced, in-your-face, bad-guys-flying-in-from-everywhere action, you probably won't enjoy this movie. It's not glitz or explosions or fancy-costumes.

But rating on an objective level: the cinematography is interesting. It tries to keep from being generic Here's the guy talking, Switch to other guy talking, Switch back to other guy talking. The way the contrast and colors are depicted is thoughtful and not overly generic like so many movies. Someones you have to admit it's a nice to not be stuck with generic camera angles and generic color/contrast presentation. The acting is highly skilled. The only actor I would have a problem with would be the kid, but that can slide considering he's still young and not as experienced as his older counterparts. The plot, while it is definitely quiet and has a not-lightning-speed pace, is still something the viewer can get into (again, assuming they don't have the attention span of a five year old). A little bit of high-paced action might have been okay to bring it a wider audience, but to do so would downplay the "normality" of the characters' lives.

2 out of 5 stars A better title would have been Shyamalan: Unbearable.......2007-05-17

Ah yes, here we have another example of the "genius" of M. Night Shyamalan, the writer/director with the uncanny ability to take a silly, fantastical story and transform it into a film that is - well, silly and fantastical. And patronizing, as well. The Sixth Sense was a great movie, but viewings of Lady in the Water and Unbreakable have me convinced that Shyamalan is the most overrated filmmaker to come along in years. Unbreakable is just a bad movie, pure and simple, but what makes it ever so much agonizingly more unbearable is Shyamalan's "holier than thou" approach to filmmaking. He can't put together a single scene without going all artsy-fartsy on us, as if his films are just too important for anything resembling normal cinematic techniques. He gives us panoramic views of characters for no apparent reason, overdramatizes even the most mundane of scenes by showing the film in ¾ time (actually, knowing Shyamalan, it's probably something like 0.7893834343 time), and oftentimes foregoes the use of background music in his far too numerous "let's just pause right here for about five minutes" character shots. Thus it is that Unbreakable, a film largely inspired by comic books, is presented as if it's a cinematic masterpiece of life-changing proportions. Well, it isn't.

Here's the down and dirty description of Unbreakable. Bruce Willis plays David Dunn, a seemingly ordinary guy who just so happens to walk away unscathed from a train wreck that killed everyone else on board. Soon thereafter, he is covertly contacted by Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson), an avowed comic book collector and dealer in comic "art" who tries to tell him he's some kind of modern-day superhero. Apparently, Elijah, who was born with a defect that made his bones incredibly brittle and easy to break, has spent all of his adult life seeking a real-life comic book superhero. David blows the guy off but soon begins thinking back on his life. The first thing he does is to try and figure out if he has ever been sick or injured. Now you would think any sane person could answer that question himself - if you've ever been really sick, you're going to remember it, and if you've never been sick or injured over the course of multiple decades, you're going to have picked up on that fact at some point long ago. Eventually, Elijah gets under David's skin, which leads us up to the film's final scenes. These crucial moments in the film ought to generate cinematic fireworks, but they don't. I looked for some excitement, and there was just none to be found.

As I've indicated, I thought the storyline was pretty silly (but not as silly as that of Lady in the Water), but an equally serious problem is the lack of any chemistry whatsoever between any of the main characters, especially David and his wife and son. Apparently, I was supposed to care about the fate of their troubled marriage - but I didn't. I didn't even care if David lived or died, to tell you the truth. And his son was just annoying. Now, you do get the vintage Shyamalan twist at the very end, but the effort required to sit through this movie all the way to the end greatly exceeds the payoff of that "surprise." I haven't seen all of Shyamalan's films yet, so maybe there is still some hope for him, but the evidence is definitely mounting that The Sixth Sense was a one-hit wonder for this filmmaker.

The amiable sci-fi spoof The Ice Pirates has earned a small but vocal cadre of admirers thanks to its go-for-broke gags and a healthy disrespect for outer space epics like the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises. An atypically goofy Robert Urich stars as the leader of a band of space pirates who kidnap a princess (Mary Crosby of Dallas fame), and then join her quest to find a mythical planet that can solve the universe's water shortage. A completely game (shameless?) cast (which includes Anjelica Huston in fetching leather gear, Ron Perlman, John Matuszak, and fantastic film icon John Carradine) and Stewart (The Philadelphia Experiment) and Raffill's breezy direction help sell the funniest bits (most notably, the notorious "space herpy" scene, and the frantic time-warp finale) and make the more leaden jokes palatable. --Paul Gaita

Description

Spoofy-goofy comedy, otherworldly special effects, spectacular space creatures, bedraggled 'bots, and biceps-ripplnig swashbuckling highlight this cult fave. In the future, as the galaxy's water supply starts to run out, a band of pirates searches for a new water source.

5 out of 5 stars Either you like the movie or you don't.......2007-07-03

It's a silly SciFi movie which can be fun to watch about once a year or so.

5 out of 5 stars 80's ya!.......2007-06-10

I think you have to have an appreciation for slapstick and 80's movies. They wouldn't be able to make this movie today[like most 80's movies]since it's weird, irreverant and pre-steroid using Pearlman.

I laugh every goddamn time the space herpie is seen scooting around in the background.

3 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-05-15

I remember this one being so very funny back in the day when it first came out. I watched it the other day and sat there laughing at how far funny movies have come since this movie was made. While it does have its parts, I would not organize a movie night around it.

3 out of 5 stars Cheesy but entertaining.......2007-05-14

This was cheesy movie making at its finest. But it is worth watching. Some funny moments and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE ICE PIRATES.......2007-05-14

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think it is sooooooooo corny, but yet so AWESOME at the same time. There are so many 80's movies that are so B rated it isn't even funny, but then again those are the ones I LOVE to watch over and over again. Everyone everywhere has an 80's movie that they love, and there is no reason to be ashamed of that. In fact I will come out and say that I actually love 'Howard the Duck'! See, I said that out loud and I am not afraid. Ice Pirates is actually not too bad to watch. It really is a lot of fun to watch and it has a great cast, too!! Well, again, I LOVE ICE PIRATES!!!!!
Thanks, Me

Product Description

In 1998, a group of Tennessee schoolchildren embarked on a class project that would change their lives and impact those of countless others around the world. Responding to a history lesson about the Holocaust, the students began collecting 11 million paper clips (a Norwegian symbol of Nazi resistance) to commemorate each of the lives lost in the concentration camps. As news of the Paper Clip Project spread through the Internet, the children found themselves aided by total strangers in their effort to build a permanent memorial to tolerance and diversity in their schoolyard. Filmmakers Elliot Berlin and Joe Fab document the project in their documentary, PAPER CLIPS, for a moving testament to Margaret Mead's assertion that "a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world."

Paper Clips is an inspiring 2004 documentary about a consciousness-raising project that blossomed into something beautiful at a rural Tennessee school. When the principal of Whitwell Middle School sought a program that would teach diversity to a predominantly white, Protestant student body, the notion of focusing on the Holocaust--specifically Hitler's extermination of six million Jews--seemed like an obvious way to go. But understanding what "six million" looks like became a challenge. Thus was born the idea of collecting that number of paper clips at Whitwell as a visual reference.

But then it turned out paper clips actually have, in historical terms, symbolic value where the Holocaust is concerned. In this moving film, one sees Whitwell students dig into research on Germany's genocidal campaign, solicit clips from a variety of leaders and celebrities, and make a name for themselves on the national news. In time, the world comes to Whitwell's doorstep, via unsolicited donations of clips from people around the world, and in a tearful meeting of students and Holocaust survivors. The dimensions of the project, the lessons about prejudice and intolerance, are stunning to watch grow beyond anyone's wildest expectations. This is a great film for families and classrooms to watch together. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars An extraordinary documentary about loss, hope, and a desire to LEARN.......2007-06-21

I purchased this movie last December.

I usually purchase movies only after viewing them. However, I was fascinated by this story, and purchased the movie without prior viewing.

The documentary is an interesting look not only at the Holocaust, but at relationships between people, and the desire to understand events of history.

In an effort to further diversity education at their school - teachers and administrators at a Tennessee school, along with students, developedh a project to collect 6 million paperclips to represent individuals destroyed by the Holocaust.

The individuals in the film - students, teachers, the journalists who assisted the project - are all absolutely genuine. They are not afraid to show their own judgements and prejudices, and also express why they have felt this way. The innocent perspectives of the students is endearing, and genuinely inspiring.

Yes, this is a deeply emotional film. It is heartbreaking, and amazing. The holocaust surivors who came and shared their stories, shared their tattoo'd numbers...broke your heart and warmed your spirit. But in the same respect the desire of these students and educators to learn and UNDERSTAND - their desire to really GRASP JUST HOW MANY 6 MILLION PEOPLE would look like...is phenomenal. This is a brilliant documentary.

I was also fascinated by the symbolic choice of a paperclip...

I am very glad I purchased this film, it is an amazing story, enlightening. And it gives you a sense of what people can accomplish. Gathering paperclips seemed overwhelming in the beginning, but what the students do, with the help of journalists, family, etc. is phenomenal. I truly get tingles and goosebumps thinking about this film. And was breathless when the journey of the Train car from germany intersected modern history on September 11.

There is much to learned from history.

When one sets out on just such a journey, I believe often, the resources come to us. And I think this story displays how seeking out to accomplish the goal of education brought many people together, and created an example of just what the world lost during the Holocaust.

Each paperclip represented one life, a life with lost potential. Each paperclip was treated with such an endearing respect; handled by someone who thought about the person who might have been...

I believe we should all see this film.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Documentary.......2007-05-16

I used this video as an introduction to teach the Holocaust for my Junior Hight students and it was well received by them.

    5 out of 5 stars A Standing Ovation.......2007-05-14

Every middle school should own and show this DVD. It is one of the most educational documentaries available today. The students and teachers at Whitwell school deserve a standing ovation for their work, dedication and determination to honor the victims of the Holocaust. I've viewed it three times and still weep.

5 out of 5 stars Accomplishes the impossible.......2007-03-27

This film accomplishes what I used to think was impossible: it's a film about the holocaust that leaves you feeling warm and hopeful when it's over. The holocaust was such a horrific event that any sane person who watches a film about it is usually left with a pit of sadness and pessimism about humanity. How could people treat fellow human beings so badly?

This film fully addresses the sadness and the tragedy of the holocaust. But it shows how students use this even to transform prejudices, bring people together, honor the dead and the survivors, and expand their minds in general.

Buy this movie instead of just renting it. You will feel like a better person after having watched it. You cannot watch this movie too much.

5 out of 5 stars Never again; but always remembered!.......2007-02-10

This film documents the progress of an idea to stop discrimination and prejudice and truly live with tolerance of all people. It shows a rural community in Tennessee,a very unlikely location, who affected history now and in the future. What started out as a project to see how much 6 million of anything - paper clips - could be collected to commemorate the number of Jews who were killed in the holocaust. In the first two and a half years, just over 2 million clips had been collected, but as word of the project spread all over the world, in the next four months they had now collected over 29 million paper clips! A cattle car, from Germany was located, was purchased (with donations of private citizens)was transported and set up on ties which had been set up - all without any cost to the students of Whitwell. The car had been renovated and 6 million paper clips, to remember the Jews and were put on one side of the car and 5 million - to remember the homosexuals, Gypsies, and others - were put on the other side. This project changed the entire town in a very touching way. The images of this film stay with the viewer long after it has ended. A film that can be seen many times without tiring of it. It restored the values and principles upon which this country was founded. A truly outstanding film based on a truly wonderful project. From the mouth of babes....

    Description

On December 31, 1931, lone trapper Albert Johnson (Charles Bronson) shot and killed a man in self-defense at his remote Yukon cabin. A few days later, hard-living lawman Sgt. Edgar Millen (Lee Marvin) reluctantly brought a heavily armed posse to arrest Johnson for murder. In the brutal siege that followed, Johnson would kill four more men before escaping into the frozen mountains. As a nation watched, Millen was forced to pursue Johnson by foot, dogsled and plane in a desperate chase that would take both men from the brink of survival to the very edge of vengeance.

Fifteen years after THE DIRTY DOZEN, Bronson and Marvin re-teamed for this explosive action hit directed by Peter Hunt (ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE, ASSASSINATION). Andrew Stevens, Carl Weathers and Angie Dickinson co-star in this real-life story of the fugitive called 'The Mad Trapper' and the manhunt that shocked the world. Based On The Incredible True Story Of'The Deadliest Manhunt In History'

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Plenty Of Action Packed Adventure.......2007-06-26

Death Hunt starring Lee Marvin and Charles Bronson is certainly one film that will never end up on the Lifetime channel. Director Peter R. Hunt and Scriptwriters Michael Grais and Mark Victor do a bang up job moving the standard western film formula to 1930's Canada. The Yukon backdrop is as much a part of this film as Monument Valley is to a John Ford Western. This film carries that uneasy feeling of trouble right from the get go. Granted it is based on a real incident, but doesn't follow the real historical line, and so what. Death Hunt is meant to be pure men's entertainment. Lee Marvin as Sgt. Millen of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who has been in the backwater for too long, knows that he represents law an civilization to a group of folks who could care less. He is a pragmatist who knows just how much to let the locals get away with, as long as it keeps the lid on. Marvin is exquisite as the grizzled drunken professional, who in his own way, is running from civilization as much as any of the ignorant locals. I forsee a retrospective of the work of Charles Bronson definitely including the film Death Hunt. Bronson plays Albert Johnson who shows up in town, out of nowhere. A man tired of life, it seems, who just wants to be left alone. But, he is not a man, like most of the people in that town, who will ignore suffering, and that even applies to animals. This is where the trouble begins. The film contains a great supporting cast, Ed Lauter, as Hazel, the ignorant dogfighting trapper who thinks that he is the defacto king of this barbaric place. Andrew Stevens as the young, piss and vinegar, Mountie assigned to Millen's outpost is great. The film also boasts Carl Weathers as an ex-patiriot American black, who found a life in this part of Canada that was denied to him in the U.S. The film is a great chase. You find yourself routing for hunter and hunted alike. With Death Hunt you get great direction, great dialogue, great scenic locations, and wonderful acting. This all adds up to A plus entertainment. A great film. Buy the DVD!

5 out of 5 stars catch me if you can and live to tell about it.......2007-03-14

There are two movies that come to mind, when I speak of this one,"Lonely are the Brave" and "Valdez is Coming". The same theme in all three of these excellent films, "the Law Hunts The Fugitive" The fugitive portrays the sympathytic hero in all three films. In all three, the persuer takes a liking to the one he hunts. They come to respect his courage and fortitude. This movie is full of twists, turns, thrills and spills, excitement, suspense, not to mention beautiful mountain scenery. Last but definetly not least, Lee Marvin and Charles Bronon, they alone are worth the price of admission. "Anonymously" Louie G.

5 out of 5 stars Marvin and Bronson at their best.......2007-03-02

This film is a masterpiece for action and adventure.Great scenery and an ending where all the good guys win,BRILLIANT.

    5 out of 5 stars Engrossing film!.......2007-02-07

Lee Marvin and Chuck Bronson are both top-flight actors, and their presence in this movie only makes an excellent 'chase' plot that much the better. This is one that can be watched when the desire to see a good action film hits again and again as it contains interesting nuances and issues that keep it from getting 'old.'

    4 out of 5 stars Vintage Bronson.......2007-01-12

I enjoyed this film, typical of the 1970s Bronson Genre - quietly spoken tough guy. Lee Marvin also plays a good role as the knock about arm of the law - who feels more sympathy for Bronson's character than his pursuers. Angie Dickenson plays a less likely widow that becomes attracted to the much older Marvin - a common thread in the 70's for some reason - a bit unrealistic but it doesn't detract from the overall story and suspense. Enjoyable action scenes and a fantastic snow covered environment make this a movie worth buying.

Immaculée Ilibagiza grew up in a country she loved, surrounded by a family she cherished. But in 1994 her idyllic world was ripped apart as Rwanda descended into a bloody genocide. Her family was brutally murdered during a killing spree that lasted three months and claimed the lives of nearly a million Rwandans. Miraculously, Immaculée survived the slaughter. For 91 days, she and seven other women huddled silently together in the cramped bathroom of a local pastor's home while hundreds of machete-wielding killers hunted for them. . . . Now, the award-winning and three-time Academy Award®-nominated documentary film producer Steve Kalafer (More, Curtain Call, Bottom of the Ninth, Price of Freedom, Going Home, and Sister Rose's Passion) brings together the same creative and production team for their most challenging and powerful cinematic journey. The Diary of Immaculée reveals the horrific, yet inspiring story of a remarkable woman's experiences in the midst of one of history's most tragic events. Immaculée Ilibagiza, and others who were there, will tell you what happened . . . and you shall never forget it. With powerful and emotional on-camera appearances from the good Samaritans who kept Immaculée alive in Rwanda, to inspirational personalities such as Dr. Wayne W. Dyer and Carl Wilkens, this amazing story of a journey through the darkness of holocaust will touch your heart and soul. This is a documentary that will take you to a place where horror and hope and hatred and love lived side by side, clasping hands and breathing the same air. With unwavering faith and courage, one young woman faced the threat of unspeakable acts; endured incomparable despair; and quietly, graciously, and bravely came through the living hell of holocaust searching for safety, peace, and an everlasting Heaven. The Diary of Immaculée is a film that abounds with drama and compassion . . . and makes us all realize that heroes and heroines will always walk among us.

5 out of 5 stars The Diary of Immaculee.......2007-06-09

I read the book Left to Tell (which was tremendous), and ordered this video right away when I saw that it was available. It is excellent also, both as a companion piece to the book or on its own. Immaculee's story is emotional and wrenching as it portrays an unbelievable tragedy. Everyone should see it so they'd feel compelled to help others who are now suffering and dying in Darfur.

    5 out of 5 stars Very moving.......2007-05-07

If you can watch this and keep your eyes dry you should examine your heart. A very touching experience as you relive her past.

    5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2007-01-22

This is an incredible story beautifully portrayed in this DVD. This is not to be missed!

    2 out of 5 stars Immaculee's CD.......2007-01-04

This CD was interesting and enhances her book "Left to Tell" by actually visiting Rwanda, her homeland. However, I give it a low grade only because I was looking for more information on the spiritual elements of her heart-wrenching story. So by that measure, my expectations were not met. I can only say that the whole of her story -- the factual and spiritual -- as told in her book will live with me forever. Very powerful.

5 out of 5 stars The Diary of Immaculee.......2006-12-05

This was a fabulous documentary...very moving. It realistically depicted the atrocities and horrors yet was tastefully done. It personalized a monumental disaster and put a face and individual story to the genocide. This one woman's remembrance becomes a tribute to her strength and endurance and a lesson in humanity as she returns to her country so many years later. You feel as if she is in the room telling the story directly to you...the method of film-making adds to the depth of her poise and emotion. Highly recommended!!

I remember first seeing this as a play when I was about 10 years old performend by a community theater group. It was so powerful, the story stuck with me for years. The movie is also powerful, and allows the viewer to see the perspective and dilemnas that anthropologists faced (and still face), and also allows the viewer to see Ishi's perspective and world view.

Another good film is the documentary, "Ishi, Last of the Yahi". Both are great for older kids (middle school and up) studying US or California history.

All received in good timing and good price. Very pleased.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2006-11-09

This movie has great historical value, especially for the State of California. The story of Ishi is one everyone should know. He was the LAst of His Tribe and just came walking out of the bush one day. No one even thought there was any of his tribe left and he taught us all a great deal about a people that had been wiped of the face of the earth. The acting in this movie was great and if you are a fan of Ishi then this is definately a movie you want to see. If you are a fan of History, see it as well.

Carroll Ballard's 1983 adaptation of Farley Mowat's autobiographical novel turns his life-changing experience studying the wolves in Canada's inhospitable North into a moving drama of one man's courage and discovery of nature's majesty. Charles Martin Smith plays green biologist Tyler, sent by the Canadian government to "prove" that the wolves are depleting the caribou herds, but what he finds is a natural world in perfect harmony where he becomes a tolerated outsider. Dumped unprepared in the wilds by a hard drinking bush pilot (Brian Dennehy), Tyler learns survival skills from the aged Eskimo who saves his life and the rules of coexistence from a neighboring wolf (which results in a literal pissing contest as man and beast mark their respective territories). Tyler's journey culminates in the majestic run with the wolf pack, an exhilarating sequence where for an instant he becomes one with natural environment of the wilds. For all its beauty, however, Tyler's experience becomes a bittersweet lesson as the encroachment of hunters, tourism, and the social landscape threaten the natural order. As in his previous film, the delicate and lovely The Black Stallion, Ballard's astounding visual treatment captures the awesome natural beauty of the Canadian wilderness with power and poignancy. Kevin Costner's Oscar-winning Dances with Wolves explores many of the themes presented in this film, but without the resonance or beauty of Ballard's unsung masterpiece. --Sean Axmaker

An odyssey of self-discovery told through captivating drama, NEVER CRY WOLF is a haunting, lyrical film from the director of THE BLACK STALLION.

5 out of 5 stars Oldie but goodie.......2007-06-12

I'm a big fan of Charlie Martin Smith, and somehow I had overlooked this movie. Could only find it on Amazon, of course. I enjoyed the movie very much, and enjoyed the ease of finding it and buying it on Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars buy it for you or your kids.......2007-04-30

A friend introduced me to this movie on videodisc (yes, you read that right). I loved it and recently bought it for my (grown) daughter. Definitely in the 'must see' list for anyone who cares about the environment, is jaded about the 'help' we're getting from the government, consipiracy theorists, nature lovers, or anyone looking for a few hours of good entertainment and great scenery.

5 out of 5 stars Never Cry Wolf.......2007-04-11

I remembered this film from the past, and purchased it so I could see it over and over again. It is an adaptation of the autobiographical book by Farly Mowat, and shows his transformation from city scientist to wilderness lover as he experiences the lives of a wolf pack, and the Indians who cross his path. He could never report back to his superiors that wolves should be shot to "save" the caribou.

4 out of 5 stars Never Cry Wolf - .......2007-04-02

The Soul of Jeramiah Johnson and the Humour of Little Big Man. Closely follows the book by Farley Mowat(?) Great sinister characters, heroes and humour...although it is even better once you have read the book. I would rank this well within my top 30 movies.

5 out of 5 stars The Magic Visual Sense of Carroll Ballard.......2007-03-30

I really discovered the talents of Carroll Ballard when I first watched "Never Cry Wolf" back in the 1980's. The film mesmirized me, not for the naturalist spirit of the story, although I share that spirit, but for the incredible visual sense of the director, Carroll Ballard. Every scene in this film seems so completely and almost perfectly composed. Each shot would, in the art galleries of the world, be an independent work of beautiful composition. Carroll doesn't just pick great locales, he weaves a work of filmic locations that imbues a sense of what the main characters in the story see. Once you view this film you see the gift that Ballard possesses and you will see it again and again in his other films; The Black Stallion, Fly Away Home, Wind (a cheesy script, but Ballard makes the visual exciting) and his last, Duma, a film ignored by the studios but a masterpiece, nonetheless, for its combination of gorgeous images of animals and kids involved in natural, conflicted, situations. Carroll Ballard announced that Duma would be his last film because the big studios weren't interested in supporting his work. I, for one, hope that this might be, for once, a perfect world that might give appropriate support for this very talented producer/director and his products.

    5 out of 5 stars Widmark's Best!.......2007-04-04

Being a great Widmark fan, this was always my favorite movie of his as a kid. Great acting by all, especially Mr. Widmark himself. and great on location scenery. The movie has a great feel to it and has you really getting into the characters.
I am looking forward to owning the DVD.

    5 out of 5 stars must have.......2007-01-21

This is a Western as it should be. In mine opinion, everyone who has a library of Western DVD's should have it; it is superb. A good story with no unnecessary shooting and nearly no unneccesary violance. The story is at all times suspensefull and the end is both satisfying and original. The actors are generally good (on a scale of 1-10 I would rate them 8).There are four exeptions who rate a 9 - Comance Tod, the youngest boy and his sister, and the hysterical and spoiled girl. There are three with lower ratings: the dark haired young adult boy (rating:7), the blond young adult boy who unnecessari shot the rattlesnake (rating:6), and the sheriff (he was completely and without any reason unhumanely cruel (rating:4)

    3 out of 5 stars Western .......2007-01-11

Richard Widmark did a good job playing an on the run outcast. He's done better but also done worse. I liked the movie as I am a western fan.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, Underated Western!.......2007-01-10

A very good interesting, well written and well acted western! The pace of the film is good and there's plenty of action. Richard Widmark, as usual delivers a very good performance. Beautiful scenery, with a very good musical score. I recommend this western, which you don't hear much about.
