You might be tempted to call it "Johnny Moronic" after you've seen this illogical and derivative adaptation of William Gibson's cyberpunk short story (available in his book Burning Chrome), which is all the more depressing since Gibson himself wrote the screenplay. First you have to ask yourself why valuable top-secret electronic data would be stored in the "wet-wired" brain of a human courier (played by Keanu Reeves), who then transports the data from China to New Jersey as part of his last, most dangerous assignment. Surely there are better ways to transmit sensitive information, but since this is really just a conventional thriller with near-future design and spiffy special effects, Gibson and New York artist Robert Longo (making his directorial debut) are more interested in surface gloss and cyberpunk atmosphere. On that level the movie's fairly engaging, and Japanese film star Takeshi Kitano makes a pretty good villain, tracking Reeves down for the information in his data-packed brain. The movie also boasts an eclectic gallery of supporting players including rapper Ice-T, performance artist and rocker Henry Rollins, beefcake actor Dolph Lundgren, and transcontinental oddball Udo Kier. They can't stop this trip through virtual reality from being botched up, but sci-fi fans will certainly enjoy the echo of Gibson's fiction that remains on the screen. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Decent film, now a bit out of date, but still a great movie from the mid-90's fearing the new century.......2007-07-02

A number of good movies came out in the early to mid 90's that showed fear about the technical advances being made at that time and what today might be like. Movies like strange days, Free jack, and even the Crow to a certain extent. Johnny Mnemonic was one of Keanu Reeves first big leading roles, and in a way a preview of another one if his future role, neo in the matrix. Keanu plays Johnny, A courier/smuggler of information jacked directly into his brain to avoid detection by athouraties. Well, he ends up taking on one last trip and gets more than he bagined for. Overloaded with data now threatening to seep into and damage the rest of his mind, He sets off to find his buyer in the streets of future Neward New Jersey. He will die if the information is not taken out of him quickly, and what he finds out soon the world littereally is resting between his shoulders. Unfortunately, his information is valuable, and the original owners have hired a gang to get it back...intacted. They want his head. Check it out, kinda cheesy, but a great movie from that genere, worth buying.

1 out of 5 stars Brain Seepage - It happens.......2007-06-25

Got to watch this for free--it was worth the money, but not my time. I had heard this was a cult classic. If yes, then it is for people that love Napolean Dynamite and B-grade Sci-Fi. Can't touch Blade Runner, Matrix, Terminator or any of their sequels, Excalibar, why, even Krull kicks Johnny's [...]. The one star rating is for seeing Flipper again. It's been a long time.

3 out of 5 stars A future that nobody wants.......2006-11-28

First, it has Keanu Reeves in it. His monotone, expressionless role has only one dramatic point. That comes when he stands tall and shouts to the skies and the gods above, "I want room service!" Lawdy, what depths that man can plumb.

Outside of Reeves, it's a fair SF flick. It's a recognizably near future, where computer chips are routinely implanted for biological enhancement. (It's already happening in Spain: ID chips implanted so the bartender can keep pouring when you're too blitzed to pay. Really. I'm serious.) Johnny's brain implants turn his mind into a lockbox for secret data. The problem is, someone snapped the key in half and the box is full to bursting, so the race is on. The baddies want the data in his head, but the head itself is a good start. Johnny is very much attached to his head, at least for the moment. So, he engages a body guard.

In part that means a guard with an engaging body, even if the engagement is only visual and platonic. It turns out that she has a skeleton in the closet too: her own, because the mysterious scourge called NAS is slowly eroding her brain, as it has done to so many millions of others. (The movie dates to the early AIDS days, so fear of disease was vivid at the time.) She'll work as long as she can, but shouldn't buy green bananas.

Like Reeves himself, this movie has many stylish pieces: tech/human mergers, evil pharmas, honorable underground geeks with thick glasses frames, and a hot babe wearing only a few gigabytes of RAM. And, like Reeves, it comes across as hyperkinetic and flat at the same time. Good SF, but on the whole a movie that's ordinary at best.

5 out of 5 stars Here's Johnny.......2006-09-23

This is one of the best semi-futuristic movie ever. And for all you Shadowrun lovers out there this movie has the same type of erie-ness and finess to it. By far Keanu Reeves' best performance to date.

4 out of 5 stars Good action movie.......2006-07-28

This a pretty good action movie, futuristic in nature, with a plot that is OK. I enjoyed it. Does have some bloody scenes if you are concerned about that sort of venue but overall it is a fun movie to watch. It is in the mode of "Blade Runner," "Logan's Run," and others of the genre. If you liked those you will like this movie.
