An excerpt from Newton Minnow's Vast Wasteland Speech to the National Association of Broadcasters on May 9, 1961:

"When television is good, nothing--not the theater, not the magazines or newspapers--nothing is better.

But when television is bad, nothing is worse. I invite you to sit down in front of your television set when your station goes on the air and stay there without a book, magazine, newspaper, profit and-loss sheet or rating book to distract you--and keep your eyes glued to that set until the station signs off. I can assure you that you will observe a vast wasteland.

You will see a procession of game shows, violence, audience-participation shows, formula comedies about totally unbelievable families, blood and thunder, mayhem, violence, sadism, murder, western badmen, western good men, private eyes, gangsters, more violence and cartoons. And, endlessly, commercials--many screaming, cajoling and offending. And most of all, boredom. True, you will see a few things you will enjoy. But they will be very, very few. And if you think I exaggerate, try it. ....

Why is so much of television so bad? I have heard many answers: demands of your advertisers; competition for ever-higher ratings; the need always to attract a mass audience; the high cost of television programs; the insatiable appetite for programming material--these are some of them. But I am not convinced that you have tried hard enough to solve them . . . and I am not convinced that the people's taste is as low as some of you assume."

Veronica Mars Season Three (There should be more) .......2007-06-29

The CW has got to be the most pathetic TV network (next to FOX, where it seems no shows last any longer than 2 years, but we get TWO NIGHTS of AMERICAN IDIOT, I mean, IDOL!!, yet great shows on FOX such as Tru Calling, Dark Angel and Firefly bit the dust far too soon).

The CW killed their best show, Veronica Mars, by halting it's third season by showing America a generic RockStar/American Dufus(oops!Idol) televised search for...THE NEXT PUSSYCAT DOLL????!!!

When this happened, I was like, This is TRULY the end of new quality TV being aired.

Veronica Mars was a breath of fresh air to the TV airwaves after losing BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and ANGEL (yet another show that was patheticly cancelled by the CW's former, WB, way too soon). Veronica Mars had great, young actors, clever dialogue and involved great twists and turns with it's crime solving/mystery story-telling..But, then again, maybe that's why the show didn't last: IT TOLD STORIES and INVOLVED ACTING!!! Unlike the irrational forms of "entertainment" fodder that, sadly, too many americans swallow and think they are getting quality TV..

The only show that is worth watching on the CW now is SUPERNATURAL (Some of you may say what about SMALLVILLE? Sorry, that kid who plays Clark Kent just isn't believable as the boy of still, I mean steel, my opinion). Let's hope SUPERNATURAL won't get the Third Season axe like Veronica Mars with the CW pre-empting the show with the likes of Searching for the new Boy Band!

Glad there are the Discovery and Sci Fi Channels...

The best show you've never seen.......2007-06-28

This show is why I turn on the television every week. If you've never seen this show, you should definitely check it out. It's not your typical teen show. It's smart, sassy, intriguing, and just plain genius. If you enjoy truly great tv, Veronica Mars is a must see. Although the 3rd season is its last, Veronica Mars is well worth getting into and loving.

RIP to the Best Show on TV.......2007-06-28

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that a show this smart and original cannot survive in a society that considers so-called reality television entertainment. That said, I'm greatly saddened by its passing.

Though season three is not as good as the previous two seasons, it is still hands down the best show on television--and well worth the purchase.

Watch all three seasons of Veronica Mars--you will not be disappointed!

Buy all three seasons! The third season is different from 1 and 2, but still amazing in its own right.

One of the last great Disney Movies.......2007-05-28

Mermaid was one of Disney's last great movies.....before they started trying to spin each classic tale into a 2nd, 3rd movie....each meaningless money making machines.

The Little Mermaid is the Disney version of the Hans Christian Anderson tale. Disney brings it to life with the beautiful Ariel, and a whole cast of loveable characters- Flounder, Eric, Sebastian, Flounder, Skuttle.

Ariel, the youngest of many daughters is bored with life under water and want to explore life on land as a human. She see's a man aboard a boat and falls in love. His name is Eric. When a storm rages, Ariel saves Eric and leaves his ashore. He sees her and can't forget her face. Against her fathers wishes Ariel dreams of life on land. She bargains with the sea witch Ursula to turn her into a human. The price she pays is her voice. She has to make Eric fall in love with her- but she has no voice.
Ursula uses Ariels voice to bring her father to her knees. In the end, she is overcome, and Triton- Ariels father is saved, and let's Ariel go- to become a human.

The music is some of the most creative animated music EVER. From Kiss the girl to Under the Sea, each songs is singable, and unforgettable. Boy and girls alike will love this movie about dreams, courage, and adventure.

Fun, witty entertainment.......2007-07-03

Though I didn't enjoy the second season quite as much as the first, it is still great entertainment. This season the mystery surrounds a school bus crash. There are many suspects and red herrings but the ultimate perpetrator is a BIG surprise. The chemistry between Veronica and Wallace is still great fun to watch- they really come off as great friends, and show a lot of spark and mischief in just a twinkle of the eye. The same is true with Veronica and her father. They have a very unique father-daughter relationship. I'm kinda jealous... They have great rapport- their conversations are always fun, playfully combative and witty banter, the dad is funny/silly/goofball but ultimately cares for and protects Veronica.

The season is a fun medley of mystery, intrigue, romance, friendship, and "normal" high school drama. Veronica graduates from high school and you're left to wonder just what is to come of the feisty detective next... The season finale isn't quite as stressful and suspenseful as the first but it's still a heart-pounding roller coaster ride of emotions. I can't wait to see what happens next!!

Harmless but Overrated.......2007-06-05

The show is relatively harmless teen schlock, but in general I've found it to be quite overrated. Not bad television, but no where near as wonderful as its generally purported to be.

If you like teen angst, you'll enjoy it. If you are a stickler for details or you find yourself irritated by teenagers making pop-cult references to the 80s that are more indicative of a writing staff in their 30s and 40s than to anything actual teenagers would say, you'll probably find yourself annoyed.

Not awful. Not great. But if you love WB teen soaps, it's probably right up your alley.

An incredibly intelligent and witty show. I thought that the premise of a "teenage detective" was a little corny at first, but I soon fell in love with the characters (Kristen Bell is amazing). Fans of Buffy or even Gilmore Girls will enjoy this show, as it engages in the same quick banter and has continually intriguing storylines. I just wish they had decreased the price BEFORE cancelling the show to drum up some extra viewers...Buy this season now, you won't be disappointed.

the BEST show on television.......2007-05-27

This show is intelligent, funny, and suspenseful. It is without a doubt
the most original show on television today (and hopefully will continue
to be if the CW doesn't cancel it). In an age of television where we
are inundated by crime and medical dramas and frivolous teen soap
operas, nothing holds a candle to Veronica Mars. The writing is
excellent and the acting is even better. Kristen Bell is superb as a
tough and spunky, but still human, leading lady. Her supporting cast is
excellent (Enrico Colantoni, Percy Daggs III, Jason Dohring, Tina
Majorino) and the frequent guest stars range from highly credited
actors like Paul Rudd, Harry Hamlin, Steve Guttenberg, Sydney Tamiia
Poitier, Ed Begley Jr., Lisa Rinna, and Alyson Hannigan to talented
unknowns. The story lines are excellent and completely unpredictable.
As you can tell, I can't say enough about it. But you don't have to
take my word for it...

Gregory McDonald's lightweight mystery novel about an undercover newspaper reporter cracking a police drug ring is transformed by screenwriter Andrew Bergman (Blazing Saddles, and writer/director of The Freshman and Honeymoon in Vegas) into a fairly sarcastic and occasionally very funny Chevy Chase vehicle. Enjoyment of the film pivots on whether you find Chase's flippant, smart-ass brand of verbal humor funny, or merely egocentric. If you don't like Chase, there's really no one else worth watching (Geena Davis is sadly underused). Chase seems born to play I.M. "Fletch" Fletcher, a disillusioned investigative reporter whose cynicism and detached view on life mirrors the actor's understated approach to comedy. Fletcher offers Chase the opportunity to adopt numerous personas, as his job requires numerous (bad) physical disguises, and much of film's humor centers on the ridiculous idea that any of these phony accents or bad hairpieces could fool anyone. These not-so-clever disguises are put to use when Fletch becomes involved in the film's smart but continually self-mocking two-part mystery. As well as trying to gather drug-smuggling evidence against the LAPD for a long-overdue newspaper story, a rich and apparently terminally ill stranger also offers Fletch a large payoff to kill him. While the film does a fairly good job juggling both of these plots, not to mention tossing in a love interest as well, it's subservient, for better or worse, to Chase's memorable one-liners and disguises. Classic Chevy.......2007-07-03

You know what Fletch is -- classic Chevy Chase in a movie written for, well, classic Chevy Chase. While the plot is rather thin, it is a solid, if not perfect, vehicle for Chase's comic genius honed in SNL skits. The direction is a little heavy handed for Chevy Chase; you can readily see the moments when Chase is acting according to script, vice when he's adding his own comic touches. Nevertheless, Fletch is a pure-fun movie that will appeal to almost any age. And if it weren't for the infamous "Fetzer valve," an awful lot of mechanical glitches would still be chocked up to gremlins!

One of the best, if not the best, Chevy Chase role of all time.......2007-06-03

When I was about eight years old, Fletch was released in the movie theaters. And I absolutely loved it. Everything about it was cool, from the dorky tall guy humor, to the car chase in the Alfa, to the Harold Faltermeyer soundtrack. Indeed, it sat at the top of my list (along with Beverly Hills Cop (Special Collector's Edition), another detective-who-impersonates-people-with-hilarious-results flick with a Faltermeyer score) of Movies To Live By, for many years. I used lines such as, "Can I borrow your towel? I just hit a water buffalo" with my classmates, but all I drew were blank stares and comments like, "you're weird." Such was third grade.

Many years later, I made the mistake of selling my VHS copy of Fletch in a bulk auction with about thirty-three other tapes. I was moving, so it made sense, but I regretted losing my only copy -- and there was no DVD available to replace it!

So now the movie has been released on DVD (a second time after a gap of a few years) in the "Jane Doe Edition," so named for Irwin Fletcher's by-line. And now that I am married, and my wife has seen the movie with me, I am aware of the movie's shortcomings. In fact, if you don't like Chevy Chase, you might think this movie is just downright dumb. But I find it so easy to identify with a character who uses his wits to get himself out of trouble that I can easily overlook some less-than-credible plot elements and the use of Geena Davis as a doormat.

Here's how the story goes: Fletch is an investigative reporter pretending to be a junkie, blending in on the LA beach with many who are the real thing. He is trying to find out the source behind the drugs so that he can make headlines in the newspaper he works for. At the same time, he is offered $50,000 and a foolproof escape plan to kill a wealthy man named Alan Stanwyk, who says he is dying of bone cancer.

Much of the story revolves around Fletch pretending to be other people while he gently pries information out of gullible and confused bystanders. In a typical scene, Fletch passes for a government messenger (Mr. Poon) who has to collect information on allegations about the company Stanwyk has married into. He interviews the CEO of Boyd Aviation, who also happens to be Alan Stanwyk's father-in-law, and finds out all kinds of information that helps get to the bottom of the unusual proposition. Whether this seems credible or not is beside the point. The characters Chase comes up with take center stage, as he wriggles his way into any subculture he pleases by using a few props and a quick wit.

The "Jane Doe Edition" does have a few extras, of course, besides the external sleeve that reveals various Fletch identities, depending on perspective. In the Special Features you will find a chuckleworthy mockumentary in which an amateur filmmaker does some interviews with people who worked on the movie. There is also a brief bit in which the make-up artists and producers talk about the many disguises Fletch uses. Besides the obligatory trailer, you will also find a clever montage piecing together some of the funniest moments of the movie, grouped loosely by category: foreign phrases, noises made with the mouth, et cetera. It's fun for long-time fans in particular.

One of my only misgivings about the DVD is the lack of any new Chevy Chase material. There are no interviews with him, no commentaries, nothing more recent than what he did in the original movie. His career is not exactly red-hot these days; would it have been so difficult to get him on board? My guess is that his asking price was a bit too high, but there are legions of twenty- and thirty-something American men who make this movie a part of their own personal philosophy and religion. It is this cult following which should keep the "Jane Doe Edition" sales strong for years to come.

Finally!!! Fletch is a modern classic this DVD worth the wait!!.......2007-05-30

Fletch is a true modern classic. I have been looking for a updated DVD of this great movie for years. This DVD version is well worth the wait. All Fletch fans will love it and new Fletch fans will be created. The special features are just "OK", but just to have this movie in a high quality DVD format is just what doctor "Rosen Rosen" ordered.

5 stars for movie - zero stars for "extra features".......2007-05-26

wow, the studio is this desperate for a cash in? Retail price of $20 for a "new edition" that interviews only a handful of cast members and never Chevy Chase? Claim that there are "deleted scenes" and only show about 5 camera stills of them? If this 'bonus features' producer really does like the movie so much then he should be utterly ashamed at himself for misleading fans this way. Old cast members tell you their favorite Fletch moments - big deal. This is worth buying it all over again? And a seperate chapter for 'best moments' when the previous chapter interviewed people talking about the exact same things? Maybe Chevy was never interviewed because he knew what a desperate cash-in attempt it was for this unworthy "rerelease". Save your money and stick w/ the bare-bones original.

Great movie, marginal extra features.......2007-05-10

Fletch is an excellent movie; humorous, fast-paced, and a perfect vehicle for Chevy Chase in top form. Twenty years later, it remains as a great movie to watch repeatedly, and the humor does not diminish with age.

I have been waiting patiently for the re-release on DVD of Fletch, since it had been off the shelves for quite a while. However excellent the movie itself is, this "Jane Doe" edition offers very little in the way of extra features.

There are interviews with some of the cast, but as mentioned in other reviews, most notably missing is the main man himself, Chevy Chase.

I did learn some interesting tidbits here and there from the other cast and production staff (I always wondered why the final scene on the beach in Rio seemed so stormy and overcast), but on the whole, it left me wanting more.

There is no "deleted scene" footage, only a few photos of deleted scenes that are long lost.

There is no "commentary version" with cast voice-overs as the movie is playing.

If there are 15-20 mins of "extra features", that would be a stretch.

As I say all this however, the movie itself is well worth the price. Fletch is a timeless classic and the DVD quality is excellent. By itself, Fletch stands at 5/5 stars. It is only the special features themselves that are nothing "special".

Fun, sassy show.......2007-07-03

I have only recently gotten into Veronica Mars. I happened to catch most of the third (and last) season and have now rented and seen the first two. I was disappointed to hear that it has been cancelled. It's a very unique, witty, and highly addictive series. The first season introduces us to sassy Veronica who has recently been unceremoniously dumped by her high-class boyfriend Duncan; her best friend, Lilly, has been murdered; her father was ousted as sheriff; and she was sexually assaulted. Geez!!That's a LOT for anyone to deal with.

She's going into her junior year of high school pretty much alone, an outcast from the rest of her classmates. That is until Wallace shows up, a new kid to Neptune- he isn't aware of her "sordid" past and comes to like Veronica for who she really is. The chemistry between Veronica and Wallace is fun to watch- they really come off as great friends, and show a lot of spark and mischief in just a twinkle of the eye. The same is true with Veronica and her father, Keith, now a private investigator. They have a very unique father-daughter relationship. I'm kinda jealous... They have great rapport- their conversations are always fun, playfully combative and witty banter, the dad is funny/silly/goofball but ultimately cares for and protects Veronica.

The season is a fun, roller coaster ride of mystery, intrigue, romance, friendship, and "normal" high school drama. My one complaint is how something is mentioned or happens and then is not resolved (or even mentioned) until a few episodes later. The season ends with a very suspenseful, stressful, and hugely climactic note. I couldn't wait to get my hands on season two. A wonderfully entertaining show that unfortunately was cut short way too soon.

It's amazing how much can happen from four little words- "I need your help" and how many times Veronica hears them. But also how many times Wallace (who works in the school office) hears "I need a favor." lol...
Don't miss out! It's a highly addictive show; so have all seasons ready to go.

Veronica at her best - and even at her worst she is better than most.......2007-06-21

This was one of my favorite shows of all time, and its demise caused me physical pain. Still, we got three seasons, and this one was the very best. Entertaining, humorous, suspenseful, heartbreaking, stunningly well written. This is a cross between a "Pretty in Pink," "Chinatown" and "Less Than Zero" ... but funny! Though the concept of this post-modern Nancy Drew is a little contrived, the characters are some of the most honestly portrayed teenagers ever on TV who react to the circumstances they are in (no matter how odd) as most teenagers truly would. And did I mention, it is a whole lot of fun to watch. One last thing, I am far from being a teenager - this is NOT just a show for teens.

I love this show. It is by far the best thing that was on t.v. I can watch this dvd over and over. The cast fits so well together and the writing is perfect. If you are looking for a good show to keep you in your seat this is the dvd for you.

Great classic comedy!.......2007-06-27

I used to watch these guys every Sunday morning when I was a kid. When I seen they finally came onto DVD and especially 8 episodes per volume, you just can't go wrong for the price. In my opinion, they were the best comedy duo there ever was. Some of their best movies exist within this volume including my favorite, Abbott & Costello meet Frankenstein. I ordered via standard shipping and received them within a weeks time, packaged nicely, and in great condition. If you love classic, clean comedy, then this is for you.

All the movies were 'clean', no fuzz, no lines, clear sharp pictures. Unlike some other reviews, these DVD's played perfectly with no problems! Definitely worth the money if you're a true Abbott and Costello fan...well worth it even if it's just old comedy you enjoy!!

More turkeys than gems.......2007-05-22

While there are a couple of really good films on this set, the majority of them are sub-par vehicles. These aren't exactly films that would make a big fan out of someone just getting into A&C. At least this set has been updated to have the eight films on four single-sided discs as opposed to the problem-plagued earlier version which had eight films on two flipper-discs, although the main menus, oddly, haven't been updated as well. They're still designed in a way that gives the impression that two other films are on the flip side.

'A&C Meet Frankenstein' (1948) is widely held as a classic, though I personally find it rather overrated. I liked it more the second time I saw it, but I still honestly don't get why so many people feel it's their best and funniest movie. Who knows, perhaps I'd find it a lot funnier if I'd seen it in the original theatrical run or on television as a child. Although I do think that the plot is pretty strong, and of the three monsters, Bela Lugosi's reprisal of Dracula had the most depth.

'Mexican Hayride' (1948) has some fun scenes, such as when Joe (Lou) is getting his entire wardrobe torn off of his body in an attempt to get rid of everything with his real initials and the later scene in the bullring, but overall it's a pretty mediocre vehicle. Its biggest fault is probably that it was originally a book and Broadway show, not a movie script originally written for them, and so didn't really fit even after being reworked to make it an A&C vehicle.

'A&C Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff' (1949) was one of my favorites on here. It's a great murder mystery, complete with some touches of film noir, and leaves the viewer guessing till the very end. Although in spite of the title, there aren't really any elements of horror in here, and Boris Karloff's character is relegated to a secondary character too quickly. There might not be a lot of funny scenes in it, but the great plot makes up for it.

'A&C in the Foreign Legion' (1950) isn't their most memorable, nor is the premise that novel (just how many comedies have had a similar setting?), though there are a lot of good scenes, such as the opening scene in the boxing ring, the auction for the harem girls, and when Bud and Lou are wandering through the desert and having mirages. It might not be as sophisticated as some of their other films, but I enjoyed it quite a bit.

'A&C Meet the Invisible Man' (1951), one of their better entries in the 'Meet' series, is possibly my favorite film on this set. There's a great plot, and the special effects are rather impressive for the era before computer-generated special effects. Though a lot of the gags center around the fact that Tommy (the boxer who is trying to clear his name of a false murder charge) is invisible, I didn't feel that these jokes got predictable or formulaic, since there were so many different jokes to be mined from this premise instead of the same ones over and over again. And how could any movie not be funny when there's an invisible character?

'Comin' 'Round the Mountain' (1951) is pretty weak, not least because, like many of their earliest films, it's cluttered up by superfluous musical numbers (which seem to drag on forever). The movie even starts with one of them, which isn't a good sign. Among the few genuine highlights are Lou's scene with the witch and the effects her love potion has on everyone who drinks it. The spoof of the Hatfield and McCoy feud could have been funnier, but the hillbilly characters just weren't utilised well enough, particularly the pistol-wielding granny, who should have been given more to do. Bud's character also doesn't get a whole lot to do. It's enjoyable enough, just nothing really memorable.

'Lost in Alaska' (1952) is near the bottom of the barrel. I was massively unimpressed by it. What few humorous moments it contains are all in the first half, and even then they're not that hysterically funny. They were really wasted in this one, and it's not even redeemed by a good ending scene. Bud's character also seems like more of a jerk than usual here.

'A&C Go to Mars' (1953) is generally regarded as one of their worst also, but I found it a bit better than its reputation. The Mardi Gras scenes are pretty funny, as are the two guys playing the escaped convicts who end up joining them on the rocket, and the opening scene of Lou with the children at the orphanage is really heartwarming, particularly knowing how much he cared for disadvantaged children in real life. Most of the rest, however, falls pretty flat. The sci-fi bits are badly dated and such obvious products of the Fifties, the scenes on Venus are pretty ridiculous (although the Queen's truth-detectors are kind of funny), and the last third or so of the movie seems really rushed. Those Venusian women must have been really desperate for men if they were attracted to these four guys! (Even Bud, whom I think looked rather handsome in their earliest films, was looking pretty old and tired by this point.) Overall, it's the type of thing that only a young child or someone who first saw this as a child decades ago is apt to find that funny.

All in all, while there are some genuinely good movies on here, and while the other ones all have their moments, this is something likely to be enjoyed more by completists and hardcore fans than new or casual fans. It's a shame A&C weren't given high-quality scripts worthy of their talents more often and had to go through the motions in turkeys like 'Lost in Alaska' and 'Comin' 'Round the Mountain' so often in the later part of their career.

Abbott and Costello on Parade.......2007-05-07

I remember the great antics of Abbott and Costello from the earliest days of my childhood. That's why I purchased the DVDs covering their film career.
I was not at all disappointed with the quality of the transfer from film to DVD; watching the DVDs was very much like watching the films in a theatre. And of course, Abbott and Costello are as entertaining for me now as much as they were back "in the good ol' days."
I would not, however, recommend these great DVDs for young people; this duo was at its best back in the forties and fifties, but they would be considered corny in this day and age. So, if your fifty--or more--by all means, shell out the cash and enjoy the laughable, crazy, and slapstick antics of one of the most famous comic pairs ever in the business. If you happen to be young, unless you have an unusual interest in the the film industry, skip these DVDs for something a little more modern and sophisticated.

This 1969 film has never lost its popularity or its unusual appeal as a star-driven Western that tinkers with the genre's conventions and comes up with something both terrifically entertaining and--typical of its period--a tad paranoid. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.......2007-06-27

At the close of the sixties, Paul Newman and up-and-comer Robert Redford would make the evergreen "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," the first of two hugely popular collaborations with director George Roy Hill. (The other was "The Sting.") No standard western, "Butch" romanticizes the true story of the infamous "Hole in the Wall" gang, creating the ultimate buddy picture, and (thanks to William Goldman's brilliant Oscar-winning screenplay), a movie that's by turns lyrical, hilarious, and tragic. An eternal crowd-pleaser.

I have loved this movie since I saw it at the drive-in when I was a kid. I watched it on t.v. over the years and felt sad as the film seemed to age.
The dvd was such a pleasant surprise, the picture was great/the colors were crisp. Even the sound seemed clearer and more brilliant. The interviews were so wonderful-I was so absorbed in all of the splendor.
As a kid, I decided that my favorite scene was the mountain scene (when Butch and Sundance are being chased by the law). I always laugh when Butch says, "The fall will probably kill you!" and then they both jump.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a modern western. It is more exciting and has more action than the typical slow western. Paul Newman and Robert Redford are an excellent duo. A great story with an even greater cast.

The movie itself hasn't lost anything with age--still funny and sad and amazingly beautiful. The special features are outstanding; it's hard to imagine what the movie would have been with Steve McQueen as Butch and Paul Newman as Sundance, but that was the original casting. How it fizzled and why the studio fought so hard to find someone--anyone--in place of an unsuitable fill-in named Robert Redford are only a few of the inside stories packed on the features disc.

Ariel and her husband, Prince Eric, have a little problem with their daughter, Melody, in the sequel to Disney's landmark The Little Mermaid. Melody is threatened by Morgana, the evil sister of the sea witch Ursula (both voiced by Pat Carroll). Before you can say "Briar Rose," Melody's parents decide to keep their daughter's roots a secret, forbidding her to learn about the ocean while Morgana is around. Now the budding teenager secretly frolics in the sea with Ariel's old friends, Sebastian and Scuttle. When she learns the truth from Morgana, Melody becomes an unknowing pawn in her scheme--and Mom has to take to the sea again to help.

As with Disney's other made-for-video sequels, The Little Mermaid II looks and sounds wonderful (and reunites much of the same vocal talent). Four- to nine-year-olds who grew up with the original will certainly enjoy seeing the friends again. A new set of artists has come up with four catchy tunes and some fun new characters, including Tip and Dash, a pensive penguin and his blubbery walrus friend. Yet, where Beauty and the Beast had a deliberate Christmas-themed sequel, and Pocahontas told the tale of her historical trip to England, the plot here is very forced. It is pretty much a rehash of the first film with different characters. Tip and Dash are a reincarnation of Timon and Pumbaa, and Morgana is exactly like her sister, except thinner. Besides the stellar music, this unneeded sequel also misses another important aspect of the original--heart. --Doug Thomas

It's Probably What you Expect -- An In-Depth Review (SPOILER).......2007-03-07

"The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea". Well, just by looking at that title, it's not exactly difficult to tell what sort of sequel it will be. Not just, "The Little Mermaid II", but they added a little hint for you: RETURN TO -- as in, a rerun of -- THE SEA.

Therefore, it's what you would expect from Disney. First off -- technicalities. They've taken some shortcuts and used CAPS animation, so it lacks that old-fashioned Disney look from the original Little Mermaid and the "classics". It doesn't look too bad or too cheesy, though. The colors are only a tiny bit more neon than before, and it's only a bit overly-smoothed. It's not as bad as many would make it seem.

The voices are, with the exception of Eric, kept, and they sound great. My only pet peeve is Melody's voice. Technically, I am YOUNGER than the character, and much younger than her voice actress Tara Strong, but I solemnly promise that I do not sound that much like a hyperactive six-year-old. But, really, what can you expect from the voice of Bubbles from the Powerpuff Girls?

The story, if you haven't gathered it yet, is simple: Ariel is grown up. Eric is grown up. They've had a baby girl named Melody, who inherits her mother's contempt of boundaries. Apparently, Ursula the Sea Witch has a younger sister named Morgana, who conveniently shows up at Melody's christening (Sleeping Beauty, anyone?). She attempts to ransom Melody for King Triton's trident, fails, and is (sort of) banished from the kingdom. Ariel decides it's too dangerous for Melody to know anything about the world of merpeople -- including King Triton, Melody's grandfather -- and hides it from her daughter.

It might be nice to mention here that only King Triton or his ancestors/descendents can remove the triton from its holster-like thingie, which is where it is stored when not in his hands.

Melody, however, longs to go in the sea or even be a mermaid (though is not sure they even exist.) When she finds a mysterious golden seashell "locket" -- which, in perfect Disney fashion, is roughly four or five times the size of a normal locket, to get the point across to the younger audiences -- she has an angsty teenage fit at her mother, Ariel, and makes up her mind to run away. Or, technically, rows away in an absolutely tiny rowboat.

Morgana seizes the chance to use a descendent of King Triton, lures Melody into her trust by using Ursula's bottled magic (?) to transform her into a mermaid, and weepily convinces Melody to "recover [her] lost trident". Melody, not knowing any better and only wanting to "belong" as a mermaid, captures the trident with the help of a talkative penguin, "Tip", and a blubbery walrus, "Dash".

Of course, Ariel and Eric are frantic during all of this, searching here on the land AND sea (coincidentally the name of the finale song), which, in effect, causes Ariel to be turned into a mermaid for the purpose of searching underwater for her daughter. If you think about it, Ariel is acting as a sort of tour guide through the original film: her grotto and "Under the Sea" rock are featured during a little musical "duet" she sings with Melody.

Naturally, Ariel and her re-united pal Flounder arrive at Morgana's lair -- strangely made of ice and above water, as opposed to Ursula's bony underwater lair -- at the exact moment that Melody arrives with the trident. Mother and daughter go through the traditional you're-a-mermaid-deal before Morgana reminds Melody that she is still waiting for her trident. Ariel rebukes this and begs Melody to not give the trident to Morgana. Melody, with a new bargaining chip, rubs it in her mother's face that she never told her about merpeople and -- with a dramatic "too late, Mom!" -- hands over the trident.

The obvious happens: Morgana gains command over all the seas, Melody is locked away with Flounder in a quickly-made ocean prison cell to await the loss of her fins and underwater breathing, King Triton's sea-army and Eric's land-army come to defeat Morgana and fail, and ultimately, Melody escapes with the help of Tip, Dash, and Flounder to reclaim the trident and give it to her newly-reintroduced grandfather, Triton.

It could've stopped there, but didn't. After the climatic battle, the first thing King Triton says to his granddaughter is that he'll give her a choice -- come to Atlantica and live as a mermaid with him, or stay with her mother and father on the land. She invents a new option: break down the (literal) wall between merpeople and human people once and for all. Voila! The End! Complete with an exeptionally good-looking teenage mer-boy and a trident-created rainbow!

Though it took a few cues from it's prequel, it was a pretty entertaining story, once you've sprinkled in a few songs:

"Down to the Sea" -- opening scene, Jodi Benson, mostly. Sweet and catchy. Almost as good as one of the originals.
"For a Moment" -- Tara Strong and Jodi Benson. Beautiful song, period.
"Tip and Dash" -- Tara Strong, Max Casella, and Stephen Furst. I'm sorry to say that this song simply ANNOYED me. It does succeed in getting stuck in your head, however, which may be the point.
"Here on the Land and Sea" -- finale, chorus. This is also a catchy song, though not especially moving. A good, solid, happy-ending song.

Characters...what can I say? Ariel has lost her characterizing feistyness, but, unless you refuse to accept a "new" Ariel, it probably won't bother you. She's more motherly than I thought the teenage Ariel could be, but that makes sense, as she is...oh, thirty- or forty-something now. Eric, I'm sorry to say, was a bit wimpy until he brought out his army. And he was my favorite Disney Prince. Tip and Dash, well, I never felt sorry for them or cheered them on. I didn't really dislike Melody until she started using too much out-of-date slang ("Hey, fellas! What's kickin'?") and was selfish and didn't think about consequences. Sebastian...good ol' Sebastian. He stayed just the same. Same with Scuttle. Flounder, on the other hand, has turned into a beady-eyed, deep-voiced obese yellow-and-blue father fish. Morgana was actually very hateable, and I loved her sharp-witted anchovy of a shark, Undertoe. Her pet stingrays, supposedly a replacement for Flotsam and Jetsam, didn't impress me nor scare me. What was really scary about them? They just laughed in this hissy way reminiscint of a toddler or a bat.

Overall, however cynical I may have been, it is a good -- not excellent, but very good -- sequel to the original. It's less epic than the first, certainly, but as the original was based on a long-known fairytale and Return to the Sea was based on the Disney adaption of the long-known fairytale, it's hard to compare them. Kids won't really care about the little characterization flaws or annoying dialogue, and it is, after all, marketed toward kids.

This is a good movie. Unlike Ariel Ariel's thirteen year old Melody dreams of being a mermaid like Ariel, dreamed of being human. But in the upcoming Ariel movie,The Little Mermaid 3 ARIEL'S MELODY Ariel is pregnant with Melody at the begining of the movie. How come Melody is thirteen in here? I like this movie and I like the fact that it doesn't have Melody in her late-teens like Ariel was. Melody goes to Morganna{Ursala's sister} with her need{want} like Ariel goes to Ursala. The two movies are a little simualar and both very good. The little Mermaid 2 has quite a few songs in it here are all the ones I can remember: DOWN TO THE SEA, FOR A MOMENT, DIP AND DASH and HERE ON THE LAND AND SEA. ENJOY THIS MOVIE.

P.S THE LITTLE MERMAID 3 IS COMING OUT IN NOVEMBER!

Of course a straight-to-video sequel is not going to be as polished or professional as the orignal, but even my dog could have written a better set of dialogue to go with the plot to Little Mermaid II.

The music stinks. I understand that for straight-to-video movies they aren't going to hire the big guns to come in and compose an Oscar worthy score, but really, a child could have written better music and more imaginative lyrics. Even children aren't going to take the songs seriously, they are that bad.

The wall thing was stupid, Ariel was almost senile wondering around the castle not knowing where the heck her brat is! Flounder is old and fat, and Prince Eric is a drain on society.
Melody is an ungrateful brat and if my daughter were like her, I would smack her silly. There are far better teenage girl role models who do not fit in that are way more pleasant than she is.
Then we also have the cheap token Timon and Pumbaa pair with the penguin and the walrus.
This movie is for Disney to make some quick cash, and for parents to get rid of having their kids underfoot for 75 minutes (though it might not even be good enough to do that)
It might be worth renting if you get severely drunk before watching it.
