The eternal fascination with all things Beatle pretty much guarantees an audience for any offering from the group and its respective members, and that will likely be the case with Paul McCartney: The Space Within US, a documentary recorded during his 2005 world tour (and broadcast in truncated form by A&E). Not that it's by any means bad. McCartney and his crack four-piece band are seen performing a variety of Fabs faves, from the delightful trifle that is "I'll Follow the Sun" to the genuine masterpiece that is "For No One" (the latter is a solo job, as are "I Will," "Yesterday," and others); as Apple computer poo-bah Steve Jobs, one of the many talking heads on hand to sing Macca's praises, points out, just hearing these classics played and sung by the guy who wrote (or co-wrote) 'em is a treat, and the great sound and high-definition video certainly don't hurt. On the minus side, the camera spends a lot of time in the audience, capturing their rapturous and often quite touching responses to the music. There are also bits focusing on a Beatles-obsessed family from Columbus, Ohio, all three generations of which are excited, to put it mildly, when Sir Paul pays them a brief visit before going onstage, and on two astronauts on board the International Space Station, for whom McCartney plays "English Tea" (from his 2005 CD Chaos and Creation in the Backyard) through a live feed from his Anaheim, California gig. These tangents may be distracting to fans who just want to watch McCartney and company at work, but considering that this was dubbed "the Us Tour," they should hardly come as a surprise. Same goes for the disparate line-up of celebs and others, ranging from Bill Clinton and various academic types to Tony Bennett and Eddie Vedder, whose comments punctuate (and occasionally interrupt) the music. Bottom line: there are better McCartney concert videos (like Live in Red Square), but this is a Beatle we're talking about here. For many, that will be more than enough. --Sam Graham

4 out of 5 stars Make The Next One A Concert DVD........2007-06-30

EVERY McCartney concert video has the same format(fast paced montage of four seconds shots, dozens of zoom in-out and around and audience shots of moslty well endowed pretties, and ecstatic people, commentaries who makes you feel like you witnessing the second coming). The music is great, the band is youthfull and energetic and the performances are often inspired,so please give us a well produced concert like so many other rock performers put out(Concert for George,Gilmour,Clapton,Chili Peppers,etc...).

O.K, the bi-polar in me still loves this concert because of the great songlist, the very much rockier arrangements ,guitar heavy sound and fantastic drummer. This younger band has given Paul a major energy boost compared to his previous touring band with Robbie McIntosh and Hamish Stewart.

So,it sure ain't going to please everyone, but i watched it three times already. It has to mean something no??

4 out of 5 stars He still has it!.......2007-06-12

Great concert dvd. Paul and the band are flawless. To much panning of the audience...... Way to much. Wanted to see more of the stage performance, but other than that, great dvd to have. Sound was great. A must have in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Day in the Life.......2007-06-08

I really liked the dvd of this 2005 concert. It has more of a personal touch than some of the other concerts have. I've read quite a few complaints about there being too many shots of the crowds shouting and singing their hearts out, and not enough of Paul and the band. I thoroughly enjoyed the pics, especially because in most places the audio was lowered and you could hear Paul's voice commenting on his life and love of the music world. Like he said in the last concert "It's what I am"
I like how he looked with his hair grown longer in back which is the way I'll always remember him anyways . Was also great hearing some new songs we'd never heard done live before like "I Will", "Till There Was You", and "Drive My Car", boy did those songs take ME way back as I was 14 years old when the Beatles first came out.The concert gives you a chance to see Paul as a man who has endured a lot, but who doesn't feel one bit sorry for himself. He intends to keep on writing and performing till the day he stops breathing. After all, "It's what he is". Buy it--you won't be sorry, I promise.

5 out of 5 stars The Next Best Thing to Being There LIve.......2007-05-19

I saw Paul McCartney live 3X in 2006 and I never do that for anyone--not even a Broadway play. I liked the fact the footage jumped around from people in the audience, the band, the audience and of course the stage. It's sound bytes, the way Gen Y prefers their info and entertainment. I'm a Boomer and I like that too. If you're looking for a straight conert, you're not gonna get that but there's no such thing as a straight concert. The fans connect in the audience and generally enjoy the experience of the concert. And every performance is a little bit different.

1 out of 5 stars The ME Tour.......2007-05-02

Paul calls this the "us" tour at one point on the DVD. Rather it should be called the "ME" tour. Basically this is a collection of fan reaction shots interpersed with sound bites from personalities who are supposed to impress on us the importance of Paul to modern civilization. Oh yes, there are a few shots of Paul playing, but I don't remember any close ups and the camera never stays on him for even a full sentence during a song. Apparently, it is too important to show more fans in ecstasy, on ecstasy, or whatever, for us to actually watch Paul performing.

Okay, Paul, we get it. We are supposed to like you. Maybe we could like you more if you didn't keep reminding us and just let us watch?

There are few voices in popular music like that of Dead Can Dance's Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard. Perry's is rich and earthy, whereas Gerrard's multi-octave instrument is, at times, downright unearthly. Toward the Within, the audiovisual version of a 1993 concert at Santa Monica's Mayfair Theatre--chosen, no doubt, for its excellent acoustics--is a fine showcase for their unique talents. Joined by five musicians on keyboards, strings, and percussion, Mark Magidson (Baraka) has filmed the proceedings in a straightforward manner, but the music is intricate and exotic enough that no special effects or fancy camera moves are necessary. The songs, which incorporate pop, folk, and world-music influences, are interspersed with interview clips, turning the release into a hybrid between a concert video and a documentary. Highlights include the hypnotic "Rakim" and soaring "American Dreaming." Toward the Within was also issued on CD, sans the interview and video clips. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

4 out of 5 stars Unique.......2007-05-07

Excellent for DCD fans, this DVD illustrates how unique this band is. If you've heard the CD it's quite an eye-opener how to see how the amazing labyrinth of sound is produced. Quality not the ultimate but camera work pretty good. A must-see.

5 out of 5 stars Dead Can Dance and Lisa Gerrard's Sanctuary.......2007-04-28

I'm a DCDaholic! I eat up everything and go to any concert in my neighborhood even if I have to drive for hours/days. This is by far one of their best products! I wish we had more of these. The new Sanctuary Lisa Gerrard is also very cool, check it out.

1 out of 5 stars Poor quality.......2006-01-21

I own the VHS tape and purchased the DVD. The DVD is horrible fuzzy quality and only 2 channel Dolby. I absolulety love the performance but the DVD is of such inferior quality that it detracts from the performance.

5 out of 5 stars Charming!.......2005-12-03

I went to see DCD with my partner when they came here on October 4th of this year (my birthday). We sat so far from the stage, it was hard to see Brendan, Lisa and the entourage, because they were so small and we were so high up in the rafters. If it hadn't been for the DCD website and Lisa's website, I wouldn't know what the duo look like. So...getting back to the DVD...I always had the CD somewhere in my music collection. The music was just 'okay' on the CD, because I couldn't see DCD performing. But now that I own the DVD of the concert, it's so pleasing to watch & listen at the same time. Obviously, the band puts a lot of effort into their performances, coming up with a sound so similar to the studio recording, it's incredible.

Yes, it's true...the picture is a bit fuzzy, but so what? For the price I paid for the DVD, I'm more than happy for buying it. And, the DVD plays on both my computer and TV DVD players. The sound is great and there's little distortion. My only gripe regarding the item is due to the editing of 'Yulunga' and 'The Carnival is Over' from the live setlist. Why did they have to cut out those 2 fantastic tracks? Darn! Oh well, that's what you get when they give you 5 bonus tracks to watch instead. Not bad, but it would've been nicer to see those 2 extra tracks live. It is nice to have 'The Host of Seraphim' on this collection, because it's one of my fave songs of DCD.

Customer note:
- There are 2 editions of this DVD, depending on when it was made.
- Early edition was released in a hard plastic, slimline jewel-case DVD case.
- Re-released in an amray case (standard 'fat' DVD box).
- Amray case comes with just the front & back insert (1 piece) without any booklet.
- Additional performances are NOT live performances. They are MTV videos.

The amray case edition is the one I have. It's obvious the DVD was re-released. When I bought the DVD, I thought it would come in the slimline jewel case. What i'd like to know is...did the original have a booklet? Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry are cool, intelligent musicians with a God-Given talent. I love the little interview snippets between performances. Lisa is pretty and her voice doesn't match the face. Everyone I've played DCD to, says the same thing, and it was amazing to watch the DVD for the first time, right from my computer.

Tracklist:
01- Opening Credits
02- Rakim
03- Song of the Sibyl

Hopefully DCD will release more live concert DVDs in the near future. I've already purchased "Nierika" on DVD from the October 4th performance in Montreal. That show was an excellent birthday gift. Perhaps if DCD read the reviews on amazon, they would sell the DVDs commercially. But then again, that's wishful thinking.

1 out of 5 stars towards the within.......2004-09-23

The DVD quality of the DCD concert in 1993 is well below the VHS Quality, Goodness WHY? I have been a collector of everything DCD have produced, How could Brendon and Lisa let something of this poor quality get released by the Distributors
Still DCD are or were a terrific band of musicians. Lets hope this DVD will get remastered

I would just like to say that although I haven't seen it in DVD form, i have seen live shows on YouTube, and had the opportunity I've been waiting for to see them Live for almost 3 years! I saw them Live in San Louis Obispo on June 4th, and I must say...Holy God!!! They are INCREDIBLE live! I have never seen a show of theirs I have been dissappointed in. Now, I just bought this DVD package two days ago, and when it gets herel, i'll be back to review. But I expect nothing less than an Outstanding performance..and I expect they would give me nothing less as an incredible live band! :D WOOT!

2 out of 5 stars very poor quality concerts.......2007-05-07

just stick to the their cd's honestly, I was really looking forward to seeing them live on stage, but they whole thing is like a britney spears concert, all were pretending to play their instruments, and that orchestral arrangments that sounds so good on a cd just looked really bad as a background tape in the concert...they should have hired the proper orechestra to be more authentic, true will cost more money..but thats how art and music should be performed...

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best concert DVD I have seen.......2007-03-06

I bought this DVD about a month ago and have seen the concert several times already. Setting aside the fact that Sharon is beautiful and has a beautiful voice, the whole band is just awesome together, they put on a show that is infectious making you want more. I haven't been this excited about a DVD album since Iron Maiden's "Live after Death" and Rush's "Exit Stage Left". The only sad thing is that Within Temptation and others like Nightwish, After Forever, etc rarely tour in the United States. I wish they would so that they can infuse the uninteresting and mind-numbing US music scene with some energy.

5 out of 5 stars PAL format not NTSC.......2007-03-03

I got my copy directly from Amazon and it is a PAL format DVD. Now I have a player that will play PAL discs but most buyers will not. That said, this is a fantastic concert with great sound and stunningly sharp visuals. Sharon den Adel is not only a very beautiful woman but is perhaps the best female vocalist fronting a metal band, especially now that Tarja is not longer fronting Nightwish.

Get it by all means if you're a fan, but just be aware that this is actually a PAL format DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Within Temptation- Silent Force Tour.......2006-06-22

This is must-have for Within Temptation fans. I discovered them when I listened to Evanescence and someone told me Evanescence sounded like Within Temptation. Sharon den Adel has an amazing voice. I've never heard anyone that has that type of voice. She has a very strong voice and it goes nicely with the rest of the band's heavy rock.

2 out of 5 stars STANDARD SCI FI FARE.......2004-07-06

One of the main problems in this low budget sci fi flick is its failure to show us the monster in full detail. A combination of ALIEN and ARMAGEDDON, WITHIN THE ROCK offers us a mining crew on a strange moon that is hurtling towards the earth. A doctor is on board to help divert the orbit of the moon. What they don't know is that the moon is harboring a million year old demon imprisoned by an alien civilization. The monster cannot function in oxygen-saturated air, so the crew decides it must battle it with nitrogen. The cast includes Xander Berkeley in his typical villain role as the money-grubbing manager of the mine crew; Caroline Barclay in a lifeless portrayal of the doctor; Brandon Tatum and Brian Krause as the gungho brothers--they're actually pretty good; Calvin Levels in his typical brother role; and Michael Zelniker as the computer nerd Archer, who is also quite good. The direction is amatuerish and the movie moves a little too slowly;it is also atrociously edited and lit. Not a horrible film, just not a good horror film.

    3 out of 5 stars Let's be honest.......2003-09-09

Not too bad for a B flick. But, spend your money elsewhere.

    5 out of 5 stars Completely Horrific!.......1999-09-03

What a horrific movie! It's scary and bloody. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It's worth watching over and over again no matter how many times.
