If you can get past its thick layer of syrup and molasses, Secondhand Lions reveals itself as a thoroughly decent family film that anyone can enjoy. It gets a little sappy sometimes, but there's something to be said for a movie in which Michael Caine and Robert Duvall play eccentric old brothers who take the easy approach to fishing: instead of a peaceful rod and reel, they use 12-gauge shotguns. When 14-year-old Walter (Haley Joel Osment, teetering on puberty) spends an eventful summer with his great-uncles on their vast Texas farmland (he's been dumped there by his delinquent mom, played by Kyra Sedgwick), he soon discovers they've lived lives full of adventure, excitement, passion, and mystery. Either that or they're old-time bank robbers with a long criminal record, and writer-director Tim McCanlies (who invested similar warmth into The Iron Giant) does a nice job of concealing the truth until the very end. Full of enriching lessons and homespun humor, Secondhand Lions has more substance than most family films. If you enjoyed Holes, you'll probably enjoy this movie, too. --Jeff Shannon

Description

This comedic and touching family film follows the adventures of a shy young boy (Haley Joel Osment) who is sent to spend the summer with his eccentric uncles (Michael Caine, Robert Duvall). At first shocked by his uncles' unconventional behavior that includes ordering African lions through the mail, the boy soon becomes enthralled with unraveling the mystery that has followed the uncles for years. Hearing tales of their exotic adventures involving kidnapped princesses, Arabian sheiks and lost treasure, not only brings him closer to his uncles but also teaches him what it means to believe in something... whether it's true or not.

5 out of 5 stars Secondhand Lions Review.......2007-06-27

A thoroughly entertaining story. One that can be viewed over and over. Excellent acting and humorous in many respects. A good family film. I highly recommend this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars humor, pathos, heartwarming all the way........2007-06-14

One of my all-time favorites. Are brothers Hub and Garth liars when they tell stories of adventure and daring to their distant relation, a pre-pubescent boy hurt by a lying mom who abandons him with these two old geezers. And where did they get all their money? The bond that grows between the aging men and the boy gives the boy the boost to manhood he needs, but is his belief in them misplaced? You won't know until the end of the movie. I love the tenderness and toughness of the two wild old characters as they show a wimpy boy what it means to be a real man.

Movie can be watched again and again......wish there were movies made these well now.

This is one of the best movies of all time as far as I am concerned. It never hit the major theaters and I happened upon it by accident. Good for all ages. I am buying this one for a gift for a family who did me a favor.

5 out of 5 stars FUN Movie .......2007-05-14

I bought this movie after renting it because I enjoyed it so much! The curmudgeon uncles played by Michael Caine and Robert Duvall were spectacular, interesting, and always with enough believability to their stories that you wondered if they were true. A warm family story for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Great classic comedy!.......2007-06-27

I used to watch these guys every Sunday morning when I was a kid. When I seen they finally came onto DVD and especially 8 episodes per volume, you just can't go wrong for the price. In my opinion, they were the best comedy duo there ever was. Some of their best movies exist within this volume including my favorite, Abbott & Costello meet Frankenstein. I ordered via standard shipping and received them within a weeks time, packaged nicely, and in great condition. If you love classic, clean comedy, then this is for you.

WORTH THE MONEY
I LOVE THIS DVD, BRINGS BACK LAUGHTER AND MEMORYS AND YOU NEVER GET BORED WITH IT,

5 out of 5 stars A. & C.::::Vol. 1,2,3.......2007-05-22

All the movies were 'clean', no fuzz, no lines, clear sharp pictures. Unlike some other reviews, these DVD's played perfectly with no problems! Definitely worth the money if you're a true Abbott and Costello fan...well worth it even if it's just old comedy you enjoy!!

3 out of 5 stars More turkeys than gems.......2007-05-22

While there are a couple of really good films on this set, the majority of them are sub-par vehicles. These aren't exactly films that would make a big fan out of someone just getting into A&C. At least this set has been updated to have the eight films on four single-sided discs as opposed to the problem-plagued earlier version which had eight films on two flipper-discs, although the main menus, oddly, haven't been updated as well. They're still designed in a way that gives the impression that two other films are on the flip side.

'A&C Meet Frankenstein' (1948) is widely held as a classic, though I personally find it rather overrated. I liked it more the second time I saw it, but I still honestly don't get why so many people feel it's their best and funniest movie. Who knows, perhaps I'd find it a lot funnier if I'd seen it in the original theatrical run or on television as a child. Although I do think that the plot is pretty strong, and of the three monsters, Bela Lugosi's reprisal of Dracula had the most depth.

'Mexican Hayride' (1948) has some fun scenes, such as when Joe (Lou) is getting his entire wardrobe torn off of his body in an attempt to get rid of everything with his real initials and the later scene in the bullring, but overall it's a pretty mediocre vehicle. Its biggest fault is probably that it was originally a book and Broadway show, not a movie script originally written for them, and so didn't really fit even after being reworked to make it an A&C vehicle.

'A&C Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff' (1949) was one of my favorites on here. It's a great murder mystery, complete with some touches of film noir, and leaves the viewer guessing till the very end. Although in spite of the title, there aren't really any elements of horror in here, and Boris Karloff's character is relegated to a secondary character too quickly. There might not be a lot of funny scenes in it, but the great plot makes up for it.

'A&C in the Foreign Legion' (1950) isn't their most memorable, nor is the premise that novel (just how many comedies have had a similar setting?), though there are a lot of good scenes, such as the opening scene in the boxing ring, the auction for the harem girls, and when Bud and Lou are wandering through the desert and having mirages. It might not be as sophisticated as some of their other films, but I enjoyed it quite a bit.

'A&C Meet the Invisible Man' (1951), one of their better entries in the 'Meet' series, is possibly my favorite film on this set. There's a great plot, and the special effects are rather impressive for the era before computer-generated special effects. Though a lot of the gags center around the fact that Tommy (the boxer who is trying to clear his name of a false murder charge) is invisible, I didn't feel that these jokes got predictable or formulaic, since there were so many different jokes to be mined from this premise instead of the same ones over and over again. And how could any movie not be funny when there's an invisible character?

'Comin' 'Round the Mountain' (1951) is pretty weak, not least because, like many of their earliest films, it's cluttered up by superfluous musical numbers (which seem to drag on forever). The movie even starts with one of them, which isn't a good sign. Among the few genuine highlights are Lou's scene with the witch and the effects her love potion has on everyone who drinks it. The spoof of the Hatfield and McCoy feud could have been funnier, but the hillbilly characters just weren't utilised well enough, particularly the pistol-wielding granny, who should have been given more to do. Bud's character also doesn't get a whole lot to do. It's enjoyable enough, just nothing really memorable.

'Lost in Alaska' (1952) is near the bottom of the barrel. I was massively unimpressed by it. What few humorous moments it contains are all in the first half, and even then they're not that hysterically funny. They were really wasted in this one, and it's not even redeemed by a good ending scene. Bud's character also seems like more of a jerk than usual here.

'A&C Go to Mars' (1953) is generally regarded as one of their worst also, but I found it a bit better than its reputation. The Mardi Gras scenes are pretty funny, as are the two guys playing the escaped convicts who end up joining them on the rocket, and the opening scene of Lou with the children at the orphanage is really heartwarming, particularly knowing how much he cared for disadvantaged children in real life. Most of the rest, however, falls pretty flat. The sci-fi bits are badly dated and such obvious products of the Fifties, the scenes on Venus are pretty ridiculous (although the Queen's truth-detectors are kind of funny), and the last third or so of the movie seems really rushed. Those Venusian women must have been really desperate for men if they were attracted to these four guys! (Even Bud, whom I think looked rather handsome in their earliest films, was looking pretty old and tired by this point.) Overall, it's the type of thing that only a young child or someone who first saw this as a child decades ago is apt to find that funny.

All in all, while there are some genuinely good movies on here, and while the other ones all have their moments, this is something likely to be enjoyed more by completists and hardcore fans than new or casual fans. It's a shame A&C weren't given high-quality scripts worthy of their talents more often and had to go through the motions in turkeys like 'Lost in Alaska' and 'Comin' 'Round the Mountain' so often in the later part of their career.

4 out of 5 stars Abbott and Costello on Parade.......2007-05-07

I remember the great antics of Abbott and Costello from the earliest days of my childhood. That's why I purchased the DVDs covering their film career.
I was not at all disappointed with the quality of the transfer from film to DVD; watching the DVDs was very much like watching the films in a theatre. And of course, Abbott and Costello are as entertaining for me now as much as they were back "in the good ol' days."
I would not, however, recommend these great DVDs for young people; this duo was at its best back in the forties and fifties, but they would be considered corny in this day and age. So, if your fifty--or more--by all means, shell out the cash and enjoy the laughable, crazy, and slapstick antics of one of the most famous comic pairs ever in the business. If you happen to be young, unless you have an unusual interest in the the film industry, skip these DVDs for something a little more modern and sophisticated.

For one-stop convenience, you can't beat this handy compilation of Laurel & Hardy classics. Although it's modestly priced and packaged, this DVD packs plenty of extras along with Stan & Ollie's finest feature and several of the comedy duo's best-loved "talkie" shorts. Sons of the Desert (1933) is the crown jewel in any L&H collection, and with Charley Chase as their stellar comedy costar, the boys reached the pinnacle of their unique partnership, playing a pair of Fez-wearing "Sons of the Desert" sneaking off to a convention in Chicago, but their wives discover the ruse with hilarious results. For L&H fans, it simply doesn't get any better than this, although 1932's "The Music Box" shares equal status--and a 1932 Oscar® for Best Comedy Short--in the L&H pantheon. The remaining shorts on the disc ("Another Fine Mess," "Busy Bodies," and "County Hospital") were produced during the prime of Stan & Ollie's sound-era success (1930-33), each boasting their own timeless bits and flawless routines. Abundant laughs are virtually guaranteed.

Most of the bonus material pays tribute to legendary comedy producer Hal Roach, who first partnered Stan & Ollie in 1926. A film-clip tribute includes interviews with comedy greats like Mel Brooks and Steve Allen, and on-screen articles explore Roach's career in greater detail. A "then and now" photo tour provides an historic tour of Roach Studio locations in Culver City, California, and text biographies are provided for Roach, Laurel, and Hardy. In addition to the films themselves (which never looked or sounded better), these extras make this Laurel & Hardy DVD a perfect choice for old and new fans alike. --Jeff Shannon

Being an avid fan of Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy down through the years, I really appreciated the Digitally Remastered versions of "Sons Of The Desert", "The Music Box", "Another Fine Mess", "Busy Bodies" and "County Hospital." The feature film "Sons Of The Desert" is one of my absolute favorites of their collected full length works. It is only rarely that one views a modern comedy of the quality these two portrayed.

5 out of 5 stars Job Well Done...Van Damme at his finest!.......2007-06-09

This movie was well made and it truly displays Jean-Claude Van Damme at his finest. He has been criticized recently for his focus on action based movies, but then again, it is what he really excels at. Job well done and I recommend this one to any fan or just anyone who is looking for a great and entertaining action movie "Van Damme" style.

this is one of VanDamnes earlier movies---and one of his better ones-----the story line is fair and his acting is good

4 out of 5 stars the movie has heart.......2006-10-03

Lionheart is one of Van-Damme's better movies. It is filled with great fighting, decent characters, and a good story.

Van Damme plays a French Legionnaire named "Leone", who escapes to America, where his brother has been killed. In an attempt to help his sister-in-law and niece, Leone enters the underground of fighting for money to help them out, where he becomes known as "Lionheart". The movie displays, through its story, that a good heart eventually defeats all forms of evil and deception.

The fights are awesome in the movie, as well as the fight locales ranging from a parking garage, a raquetball court, and even a near-empty pool. The final fight is between Lionheart and a massive fighter named "Atilla" (who also played the deadly Mongolian fighter in Van Damme's movie "The Quest"). The fight displays great Van Damme kicks, lots of blood, and lasts about 7 minutes.

If you love underground fighting for a variety of fights, Lionheart will definetly please. You even get a decent story with a happy ending as a bonus.

    3 out of 5 stars where's the letterboxed edition.......2006-08-02

5 stars for the movie but only one star for the company releasing it. Much like "timecop" another terrific Van Damme movie, there's no letterboxed edition. Why do they do this to us? The horror...the horror...

Exiled to a video-only release when its distributor balked after the flop of Jean-Claude Van Damme's previous film Knock Off, this lavish adventure deserved a chance at theatrical success. Action icon Van Damme recasts himself as a tragic romantic hero in this entertaining old-fashioned adventure with a modern sensibility. "The Muscles from Brussels" is no Brando, but he acquits himself nicely as a cocky boxer who double-crosses a Marseilles mobster and joins the French Foreign Legion when his half-baked plan backfires with tragic consequences. Surrounded by a better than usual cast (including Steven Berkoff as a Teutonic drill sergeant, Jim Carter as the ruthless ganglord, and Nicholas Farrell as a gentleman soldier with a taste for gambling and a dark past), Van Damme's dour performance sometimes gets lost in the colorful characters around him. But that's okay--there's adventure enough to go around and he's willing to share it. The Marseilles scenes evoke a quaint movie past with their smoky bars and shadowy streets, but the film is reborn as an ambitious, stoic platoon drama in the sands of French Morocco. Legionnaire alludes to classic films from Beau Geste to Casablanca to Lawrence of Arabia, but ultimately marches its own macho course, reveling in testosterone-driven heroics and bonding-under-fire while acknowledging the irony of its colonial mission ("We're the intruders," realizes one soldier). It's a calculated risk for Van Damme (who also cowrote and coproduced), but if Legionnaire never quite grasps the epic scope it's reaching for, it remains one of his best films, a handsome, exciting, and surprisingly grim desert adventure. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars Good direct to TV movie.......2007-01-21

I think this is direct to TV, I certainly never heard of it in the theaters.

Jean Claude Van Damme stars as a boxer who is supposed to throw a fight. When he meets his old girlfriend who he stiffed at their wedding he decides to run away with her. This doesn't work out and he decides to run away to join the French Foreign Legion. He knows that it is going to be bad going in but has to do it. I wish they would have explained a little more of exactly why he joined but that is really the only major flaw in the movie. The interaction between the main charcters who Jean Claude meets is the shining point in the movie. Adewale Akinnouye-Agbaje's(Oz, Lost) southern accent was odd to hear. It didn't fully work for me but it is always great to see him on screen. Everybody is great and they stick by each other no matter what and everybody just does a brilliant acting job overall. Jean Claude's facial expressions looked stiff for the most part but he was the worst of the bunch and still did pretty good for himself.

While fighting battles with no of chance winning, some of Jean Claude's past catches up with him but the heart of the story is between the main characters and the story remains that way until the end which was a good choice.

I was completely surprised this wasn't your standard B-action flick. It is actually a very good movie with great sets and superb battle scenes. The cinematography in the desert is one of the finer points of the movie. No stylized action and the movie is all the better for it. We don't need to see Jean Claude doing super kicks and taking out everybody who has a gun with his bare 2 hands. We have seen that way too many times. You could tell it was right at this point in his career that he wanted to start doing better movies and he has put out about 4 good movies since this. Things are definitely looking up for the man who's first starring role was in Ng See Yuen's 'No Retreat, No Surrender'(AKA Karate Tiger). The movie gets a 3.5 from me but I can only pick a 3 or a 4. I don't know if I would watch it again since I am a hardcore action junkie but it was damn good movie.

This is a great DVD release from Sterling Entertainment. Picture is widecreened in a letterboxed format. Only 2-channel sound but still pretty good.

Special features include a 7 minute behind the scenes. It has an interview with one of the producers where he talks about Jean Claude. It also has an interview with the director and you get a little bit of a look behind the scenes.

There is a French Foreign Legion section and has a good interview with an historian. This is very good information wise and briefly tells how the Legion came to be and a bit about what happens after this movie. Best special feature on here. Also in this section is a very brief recent look at the FFL, text given on descriptions of weapons used, and a still gallery of filming the movie.

There is also a commentary with the writer of the movie.

The back of the DVD case also says that it has a commentary from a FFL expert and I was very disappointed not to find that on the disc.

5 out of 5 stars one of "THE BEST OF THE BEST" ..........2006-06-09

Was that even a Van Damme film ? ... oh well , that's how I would discribe this Van Damme film .

Great sets , Great locations , Great costumes , Great props , ok acting ... this is Van damme after all !

The only 2 things I could complain about is the fact that Van Damme was a little bit cheesy about being proud to be a LEGIONAIRE and the ending ( I wont spoil it) .... it just seemed prodictable to me .

All in all , this is a good film and I recommend this as one of the best Van Damme films .

5 out of 5 stars van damme at his best .......2006-05-13

love this movie jean claude van damme at his best great fun for all action fans do not miss this one

    3 out of 5 stars B Budget At Best.......2006-03-15

This is NOT one of Jean-Claude Van Damme's better efforts. Lots of special effects, blood and gore, but very light on acting. Historically, I'm sure the members of the LEGION ETRANGERE (French Foreign Legion), are laughing themselves silly, or rolling in their honorable graves.

    5 out of 5 stars "I will break you, then re-make you!".......2005-12-11

Definitely a good movie, Legionnaire, brings to the screen the story of a French boxer, who refuses to take part in a rigged match resulting in his joining the Foreign Legion.
It is the 1920's. France's North African colonies are experiencing Arab national revolutions and the French Foreign Legion is looking for new recruits in Europe as they sense their hold is weakening.
The movie is action packed, the special effects are great, the acting is excellent and the cast are wonderful.
Jean-Claude Van Damme, Steven Berkoff, Nicholas Farrell, and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Consequently, they have done a superb job of providing an entertaining film that can be watched over and over again.
There is a wonderful feel of History; the clash between the French and Arabs is as fascinating as the interaction between the different nationalities found within the Legion, and both are presented very well in the film.
History, Battles, Intrigue, Duty, and Honor are all about.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, the costumes, and the music are all wonderful!
The film combines romance, drama, action and adventure making it a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!

1 out of 5 stars This is SO Cynical.......2007-05-23

The only reason Time-Warner continues to put out this one disc/three-four episodes nonsense is to snare small children, who will needle their parents into making the impulse buy. The adult fans of these shows already know to wait for the inevitable box sets. This is aimed squarely at kids, who don't have the ability to discern what a bad deal it truly is. Shame on you, Time-Warner.

I agree with some of the other writers here. If you buy this dvd you are supporting Warner Bro's and their consistant greedy bonehead decisions to constantly release these 3-4 episode per dvd items. It's ridiculous and a RIP OFF!! YOu can get the entire seasons of the Batman for no more that 15 bucks right after the season ends..but this cartoon you get only 4 episides for the same price and its also WB. Greedy. Please do not purchase this item. Force full season sets to be released day 1. True fans..I know you agree...represent.

    1 out of 5 stars Agreed, but . . ........2007-05-15

This is a 1 for Warner but a 5 for the show.

If you are a Legion fan, you've probably already seen the show. But if you're a Legion fan who hasn't seen this incarnation of the team- or maybe a Teen Titans fan lamenting the loss of that great show- LoSH is worth seeing.

If you liked Teen Titans in animation then the Legion provides some interesting comparisons and contrasts- both are anime-influenced with plenty of action but while the theme of Teen Titans is friendship, the theme of the Legion is heroism. It leads to different relationships and a different feel to the show and although the characters are consistent in their actions and as well-developed as you could hope from the format, the chemistry between the characters is not quite where TT got in the first season- but there is promise in LoSH and I'm looking forward to season 2.

Despite the fact that LoSH is a kid/teen-oriented show and not part of the "Timmverse" I am happy with the way the writers and producers respect the history of the Legion- and some of that is in surprising ways, including a budding romantic relationship between two characters, the death of third and an epic story that is a part of Legion lore.

Granted, on a 4 episode DVD it's unlikely that you'll see any of those moments but when Warner finally gets around to releasing the complete first season on DVD I'll enjoy watching the evolution of the team by watching the episodes in order [Kid's WB showed the episode out of sequence during the broadcast run].

In short: great content, crummy marketing.

btw- this is not, "Legion of the Super Heroes." Ugh.

1 out of 5 stars Why Does Warner Keep Doing This?.......2007-05-14

I hate that Warner keeps doing these one disc/3 or 4 episode releases for their cartoon series first and waiting years to do full season releases. Full seasons releases are the standard now and I wish that Warner would get on board. I'll be waiting for the full season and will laugh when I see this release in the cut-out bin next year.

3 out of 5 stars Strong Plot Weakened by Blotchy DVD.......2007-03-19

In CONSTANTINE AND THE CROSS director Lionello de Felice brings to the screen a period of time in Western history that is much misunderstood and even less recognized in history texts. The Roman Empire in the early 300s was a strange and unwieldy quilt of multi emperors all of whom ruled various subsets of what had once been a unified empire. There was an emperor for the Eastern provinces and another for the western. And in both there was a sort of junior emperor called a caesar. Cornell Wilde is Constantine, son of one of these caesars. His father is killed in battle, and Constantine is soon elevated to the emperorship as a result of a smashing victory over a barbarian army. The film is historically accurate in many areas, but suffers from an inexcusably poor job of transferral to DVD which includes blotches and blips aplenty. De Felice captures the historical sweep of events that must have seemed confusing even to contemporaries but due to a deft hand behind the camera never manages to lose the interest of the viewer.

Wilde begins the film as a hothead, who seems to be unwilling to heed the advice of his caesar father. As event follows event, we can see his slow maturation on several levels. As he moves to Rome to get embroiled in the power struggle that will later elevate him to emperor, Wilde becomes more astute as one who gets on the job practice as a young emperor to be. He meets and later marries Fausta, fetchingly played by Belinda Lee, who in real life died in a car accident just a few months before the film was released. Fausta is a woman who is torn between her love for Constantine and her knowledge that her brother and he must soon collide in a lethal duel for the crown. The film has several dramatic highlights. The much discussed scene of the moon morphing into a cross stands out. Further, De Felice had to stretch a tight budget so that a few hundred extras could sub for the tens of thousands that were seen in other films like Ben Hur and Spartacus. The film does not mention that in real life Constantine executed Fausta for fear that she had cuckolded him with a son from a prior marriage. The historical Constantine is mostly remembered as the first Roman emperor who made Christianity as the empire's official religion. Wilde is convincing as a ruler who slowly comes to value acknowledging a faith that places peace over mindless war. CONSTANTINE AND THE CROSS is one of those rare films that entertains even as it instructs. It succeeds well enough for one to overlook the admitted flaws. Recommended

3 out of 5 stars For anyone enjoying biblical drama, fact or fiction> It is worth watching........2006-04-26

I am not an expert on movies, but I do enjoy most biblical dramas. A long time ago, I recorded this movie off TV; (not a very good recording), so I was very thrilled to find that it is availlable on DVD. When it arrived in the mail, I sat down to watch it right away. I was surprised at the poor quality of this reproduction. The colours are kind of pale and keep fading in it out. However, I did enjoy the story and it is still watchable. Hopefully, some day they will release a better reproduction of this movie. Be aware of low priced DVD's, I will be in the future.

4 out of 5 stars It is a movie about discovery and acceptance.......2005-12-14

Most of the movie centers around political intrigue between Constantine and those in Rome who want to usurp his power and prestige. There is a good amount of Roman battle scenes (Civil war). A very small part of the movie is also taken up fighting the barbarians.

However, it is a good example of just what Christian Martyrs by the tens of thousands had to endure (death) before Constantine came on the scene. Some here say that it is not factual. Yet evidence from antiquity is strong that Constantine did have a conversion due to divine intervention. He was alone among emperors to fight for religious freedom. Constantine did not convert immediately after seeing the cross in the sky. But the stage was set. His mother (Helena/to Catholics: St Helena) is portrayed very well in this movie.

In this movie, I was glad to see that we see in the Christians of the time, a sincere, unwavering love for Christ. How else could they go so willingly to their deaths.

At such a very small price for this fully restored and digitally enhanced film, you just can't go wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Elaborate Italian Sword And Sandal Epic A Cut Above The Rest.......2005-10-29

The Roman Emperor Constantine who was responsible for making Christianity the official religion of the previously pagan Roman Empire has strangely enough been rarely the subject of movies set in Roman times. While this early 1960's Italian produced epic does play around heavily with historical fact, in particular with the details of Constantine's personal life and character, it does however make an earnest attempt to retell many of the significant historical moments in the period of Constantine's battle to become sole emperor of the crumbling Roman Empire in the 4th century A.D. For this kind of production which enjoyed great popularity in the early 1960's "Constantine and the Cross", is an elaborate entry and benefits from the presense of American actor Cornel Wilde who takes the lead roel of Constantine and does bear a good resemblance to the Emperor from the statues preserved from his time. Despite having to act many fictional events Wilde does an excellent job in the lead and manages to combine well with the Italian cast who make up all the supporting roles

    DVD features

The Challenge of the Super Friends: Attack of the Legion of Doom DVD is rounded out by some slight extras that provide a few nuggets of background information on the Legion of Doom and the series itself. "Hall of Doom" is the most enjoyable feature, offering thumbnail sketches of each Legion member as well as a montage of their fiendish exploits. However, "Super Friend or Super Foe?" is an ill-explained identification game that asks viewers to find hidden Super Friends in a portrait of the Legion of Doom. Series story editor Jeffrey Scott contributes brief anecdotes about the program, which can be played before each episode; these bits are advertised as introductions, but this is somewhat misleading, as he doesn't mention anything specific about the four episodes. Finally, the main menu offers viewers the opportunity to play the episodes individually or all at once. --Paul Gaita

    Amazon.com

Warner Home Video aims to please viewers hungry for vintage Saturday morning animation with this DVD, which compiles the first four episodes of the popular 1978 super hero series. Challenge of the Super Friends was the third go-round with DC's heroes for producers Hanna-Barbera; the difference here is in the premise, which pits Superman, Batman et al. against their sworn enemies-Lex Luthor, the Riddler, and 11 other villains-who have joined together as the Legion of Doom and are dedicated to defeating the Super Friends. Scripting and animation in each episode is rudimentary by today's standards, which may be off-putting for younger viewers who are familiar with the recent Justice League series. But purists will appreciate the more serious tone of the episodes, and how closely they hew to the original comics, and fans of all stripes should enjoy the cliffhanger action and the over-the-top machinations of the Legion of Doom. --Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best of all superman cartoons on DVD.......2003-09-19

My 3 1/2 years old son watches this dvd over and over again.

I have bought him all 3 justice league dvd which are the newer version with better color, sound... But, for a 3 years old this does not really seems to matter much since after I got him this DVD I have a hard time playing him the justice league ones.

I highly recommend this one for your kids. They will enjoy this one over and over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Great content, poor package design.......2003-08-10

I may yet buy this DVD someday, as I always enjoyed the Superfriends series in all variations especially Challenge of the Superfriends where this comes from. I will review the disc itself when I buy it, but for now I just have one question which hopefully people will take notice of when they do buy it. This is a compilation of "Challenge of The Superfriends" episodes, who is the dumb cluck who designed the dvd case with the "Super Friends" logo of the first incarnation of the series which came out in 1973? In my opinion that will confuse customers who buy it here on Amazon.com or anywhere for that matter. Someone should write to the manufacturer, and tell them to ease up on the red dew (I'm being nice here, could have said something stronger) when they design the package for the next disc.

5 out of 5 stars FLASH RUNS REALLY FAST.......2003-06-26

THIS IS A NICE TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE IF YOU'RE PROPERLY BAKED.
TED KNIGHT IS THE NARRATOR...WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR?

    5 out of 5 stars Fun incarnate.......2003-05-22

This DVD brings back the memories of being a kid, and enjoying the best of the years of Superfriends cartoons --- the "Challenge of the Superfriends" where they are pitted against the Legion of Doom. Fantastic voices, cheesy (but fun) storylines ... this DVD is pure fun. Its light fare when compared to the 90's Batman Animated series but still provides a good time.

2 out of 5 stars Nostalgia is only so powerful...........2003-04-29

As with so many nostalgic chunks of youth of the 70s, SUPER FRIENDS holds up better when it's just a rose-colored memory; The actual cartoon is mostly just painful to watch, unless you enjoy counting the many bloopers (Green Lantern with three arms; fingernails on gloves; Wonder Woman with six fingers; Batman with a bat logo on his cape; disappearing and reappearing utility belts) or laughing at the many examples of lazy cartoon logic that were rampant in adventure cartoons of this era (Ancient Romans speaking English; highways that lead right off of a cliff; mortal humans breathing in space).
The introductions by story editor Jeffrey Scott are interesting, but too short. A few very quick flashes of model sheets remind us of how poor Alex Toth (the brilliant cartoonist / storyboard artist / character designer who put more effort into his work than anyone else at H-B ever did) is once again given the shaft with the bad redrawing of his Super Friends portrait that graces this cover.

This is your typical weak Warner Home Video compilation that is obviously geared towards children rather than collectors.
Which is fine if you have children; Certainly, CHALLENGE OF THE SUPER FRIENDS is a fine thing to sit down and watch with your kids (you can test how smart they are by seeing what ridiculous plot points they question), but if it's actual semi-adult superhero entertainment you want, stick with the Bruce Timm cartoons of the 90s (even if those DVDs are wanting as well).

    5 out of 5 stars Gee that's swell photograpghy.......2007-05-20

Ah life does imitate art. Almost 60 years after this film was made, a suicidal young man joined the US Marines to forget his girl troubles. This film will always have a special place in my heart.

Ollie falls in love while in Paris, to an inn keepers daughter. His proposal is turned down amidst laughter at his expense. Stan thinks that the best thing to do is to go back to the fish market where they work, but Ollie had nobler ideas, he must drown himself along with his broken heart. Of course Ollie convinces Stan that he must die too, after all what would Stan do without Ollie, aside from having a wonderful and rewarding life at the fish market. But thanks to some friendly advice and a man-eating shark, the boys decide to live again and join the French Foreign Legion.

What a Legion it is, work and march from sunup until sundown for 2 cents a day. Ollie tells the commandant that they refuse to do that much work for 2 cents, so they are put on laundry detail. I have never in my life seen a pile of clothes that large. Well Ollie has a revelation and forgets about his heartache and decides it is time to go home. After all why clean a mountain of dirty drawers if you don't have too.

Well the boys do not understand the terms desertion, UA, or AWOL, so off they go, but not without wrting a nice letter to the Commandant and stealing his cigars. Well the letter was pretty insulting and maybe it is a good thing that Ollie cannot spell raspberries. So after a little chase and a nice rendition of 'Shine on Harvest Moon', the boys are captured and thrown into a cell to await the firing squad. However, an eternal mysterious hand throws them a letter through the bars. There is an escape hatch. Stan is not sure why they are crawling through an underground tunnel.

    Ollie "We're making our escape"
Stan "Are we allowed to do that?"

Anyway they make their way to an airplane and get away from the chasing legionaires, only to crash. Ollie becomes a horse through the magic of movie reincarnation and Stan is doomed to walk the earth with people 'staring at him and wondering what he is'.

    It's a good flick, I like it

2 out of 5 stars Two Laughs is Not Enough.......2007-05-17

I tried to hard to love this movie, but in all honesty, I thought it was painfully unfunny. I laughed twice - first when Ollie tells Stan that without him "people would stare at you and wonder what you are - and I wouldn't be here to tell them" and last at the very end when Ollie is reincarnated as a horse with a mustache and a hat. To be fair, I admit that I also smiled once to see Ollie's coy flirtation with the innkeeper's daughter.

Apart from that, the film was only interesting for its surprising bleakness at the beginning - there was something compelling about watching Ollie, suicidally depressed, decide that Stan too must die.

All in all, I was bored. The boys try hard to be funny but the material just isn't up to it. Two laughs is not enough.

    4 out of 5 stars Deuces review.......2007-04-20

Most L & H fans are by now familiar with this classic tale of Stan & Ollie in the French Foreign Legion so I will not discuss the merits of the plot line and focus instead upon the quality of this restored edition. On the whole, the images are crisp and the sound is consistently clear. There are occassional scratch and dirt marks but these are so infrequent and occur so quickly that they do not detract in any way from the viewing of this film. These elements, combined with some of the extras included on the CD make it an excellent value and a worthwhile addition to any collection of classic Laurel and Hardy films.

5 out of 5 stars One of their best non-Roach films.......2006-10-10

While everyone seems to agree that L&H did their greatest most representative work for Hal Roach Studios, there are some films here and there from other studios which are just as strong, great, and funny. This is one of them, and in spite of a mixed reputation among fans, is often cited as the best non-Roach film, period. The plot starts out simply enough; Stan and Ollie are vacationing in France, about to return to the United States, but Ollie is in love with Georgette. He is heartbroken when he finds out she loves another man (later he finds out she's actually married, and to his Foreign Legion commanding officer no less), and decides to bump himself off. Naturally he makes Stan commit suicide too, but after a number of typical false starts, they're finally saved when Georgette's husband comes by (he overheard them arguing) and recommends joining the Foreign Legion as a surefire way of forgetting all about women. The boys take him up on his advice, but after causing a lot of trouble and a quick discovery that they're just not cut out for the service, they pack up their things and leave. Their superiors are furious to discover the note they left, and have them arrested when they finally catch up to them. When they tunnel their way out, there's an avalanche and they're forced to start digging up instead, right into the wine cellar in Georgette's house. More comedic mayhem ensues as they start running away again, and they end up in a plane they can't even fly properly, culminating in one of their strangest endings ever.

Also included are a bunch of interesting rarities--two short silent newsreels showcasing their 1932 visit to Edinburgh, Scotland and Tynemouth, England, a brief 1943 PSA short narrated by Pete Smith, 'Tree in a Test Tube' (their only appearance in color besides the short surviving fragment of the 1930 feature 'The Rogue Song'), a gallery of posters, stills, and PR materials, an introduction by Serge Bromberg (director and co-founder of Lobster Films), a star-studded (but not very good) 1931 short they made a brief cameo in, 'The Stolen Jools' (just about everyone under contract to MGM at the time makes an appearance here, along with some guest stars from other studios!), and their 1954 appearance on 'This Is Your Life.' It's well-known in the fan community that they weren't really pleased about appearing on the program, and it really shows in how quiet they are and how ill at ease and embarrassed they look. Stan in particular wasn't happy about being surprised like this, since he always liked to have material prepared before giving a performance. Additionally, most of the guests who came on didn't really have much of a connection to them; it was nice to see people like Ollie's first sweetheart, the woman who was in his performance troupe when he was living in Florida, and director Leo McCarey, but most of them didn't have a big connection to them like, say, Charley Hall, Billy Gilbert, Hal Roach, Sr., Anita Garvin, or Tiny Sanford, all people who were still alive at the time. It could have been a great loving tribute to them, but instead falls really flat.

Although fan reaction to 'The Flying Deuces' is mixed, I really like it, though perhaps wouldn't rate it quite as high as a feature like 'A Chump at Oxford' or 'Pack Up Your Troubles.' And even though they weren't at Hal Roach for this picture, their longtime foil Jimmy Finlayson also appears here, and he's as great and funny as always. Unlike most of their other non-Roach films, here they still have control over their characters, aren't relegated to lesser roles, and had a great script. As for picture quality, I'm reviewing the Kino release, which has very good image quality. It's too bad the reviews for all of the releases of this are being mixed together. I didn't see anything wrong with the prints, certainly not enough to give this a lower rating. Whatever happened to the days when fans didn't throw a fit just because something didn't always have crystal-clear picture-perfect image quality? It seems as though the invention of the DVD has really raised people's expectations, and now we hear complaints about less than 100% perfect or remastered images when such prints would have been considered just fine instead of horrid or unwatchable in the era of the VHS.

    4 out of 5 stars Hardy Reincarnated.......2006-08-07

Quite a bit of stuff happens in this short 70-minute film. Hardy falls in love with a girl who is already married, and Laurel keeps bumping his head into a ceiling by accident. When Hardy's girl tells him she's not available, he contemplates suicide. Naturally, Laurel is dragged into the suicide attempt as well. They go to a river where Hardy ties one end of a rope to a heavy object, and ties the other end to himself. Then he ties Laurel to the rope too. Laurel says he has no reason to follow Hardy into going through with such a dreadful act, but Hardy says Laurel is incapable of making it in life alone, so he has no choice. In Hardy's own words, "People would stare at you and wonder what you are...and I wouldn't be there to tell them."

Just as they're about to end it all, a man recommends the two men join the foreign legion to forget about their girl troubles and they take his advice.

Hardy plans to only be a part of the legion for a few days, until he forgets about women completely. He and Laurel refuse to work for less than 25 cents a day, yet they end up working for 3 cents a day washing and ironing clothes. After Hardy sees the mountain of work he's asked to do, he says, "A miracle has happened. I've completely forgotten what I'm supposed to forget. Let's go home." Unfortunately his iron sets fire to a giant pile of clothing, and he and Laurel are both arrested. They tunnel out of their jail cell, and try their hand at flying a plane to escape. This is where the "Flying Deuces" title comes into play. Both steering wheels of the plane break off at the same time, leaving its two occupants helpless. They crash into the ground at full speed, and Laurel miraculously survives. Hardy isn't so lucky, and is reincarnated into a mustached horse with a derby. A very unusual ending I must say. Great plot though, and a great film.

Good stuff, especially for JLA comic book fans. Kinda irritating that these 2 series are being released piecemeal (and if you find yourselves buying the Justice League 3-pack you will end up having 2 copies of the Justice League pilot!!!!). Anyway am looking forward to buying the season 1/ complete set of "Challenge of the Superfriends". Plus am hoping that they come out with season/ boxed sets of Justice League as well.
