Broadcast to record ratings on the TNT cable network, this Raiders-esque adventure does not go by the book, staring with its atypical action hero and his decidedly uncool profession. Flynn Carsen (Noah Wylie from E.R.) is a thirtysomething perpetual student who still lives with his mother (Olympia Dukakis). When his exasperated professor finally ejects him into the real world, Carsen's Holmesian deductive acumen lands him a job as the librarian at the Metropolitan Library. This is not an ordinary library. It houses history's most mythic artifacts, including the Ark of the Covenant, Pandora's Box, and the sword Excalibur. The fate of the world is in Carsen's hands ("That's so sad," he observes) when the dread Serpent Brotherhood steals the library's Spear of Destiny, and Carsen must retrieve it. His reluctant, and antagonistic, partner is Nicole (Sonya Walger), who is as skilled in martial arts as Carsen is schooled in the Dewey Decimal System. Bob Newhart and Jane Curtin add welcome comic relief, with Newhart, of all people, getting into the action by film's end. The humble hero (who would rather be known as "Flynn, the rather pleasant at parties"), somewhat cheesy special effects, and corny comedy make The Librarian a fun guilty pleasure. As Carsen proclaims, "Being a librarian is actually a cool job." This looks like the beginning of a beautiful franchise. --Donald Liebenson

4 out of 5 stars great romance, great characters, great fun!.......2007-05-19

So, this movie wasn't Indiana Jones. So what? What is? They did they best they could with a limited budget. So it had factual errors? So did Indiana Jones, so did the Mummy, so did National Treasure and Sahara. Does that make them less enjoyable movies? Not to me. So, give this movie a chance before you bash it.

This movie was superbly cast, given the TV movie budget. Noah Wylie was the geeky and goofy, but kinda cute, intellectual Flynn Carson, who finds himself in his thirties, living with his mother, while having amassed 22 degrees (is that even possible?) and is no longer welcome in school. He's told to get a job (and a life) and is thrust into the real world. His well-meaning mother (Olympia Dukakis) is constantly trying to fix him up, in the mean time. So, here is Flynn, a genius with 22 degrees, and he doesn't have employers beating down his door with jobs? I took a star off for that being really inplausible.

Flynn finds an invitation to interview with the Metropolitan Libary. After waiting a whole day in line, he goes into an interview with cranky Jane Curtain, humorless director of library, although she was actually pretty funny. In a funny sequence, he deducts, with Sherlock Holmes logic, that she's recently divorced and had three different cats. Surprise, he meets a Judson, the senior librarian (Bob Newhart). They take him on a magical tour of the portion of the library that few people know about; it's stocked with antiquities that the rest of the world doesn't (or shouldn't) know about: the REAL Mona Lisa, the Holy Grail, unicorns, the golden goose, the arc of the covenant, pandora's box, among other things. The Librarians are keepers of these great treasures. And it's the Librarian's job to keep them secret from the public.

On Flynn's first official day, they discover that the library was broken into and a band of theives took only one thing: one-third of the Spear of Destiny, the spear that lanced Christ's side. To wield it gives the user great power. Hitler had a third. Napoleon had a third. So basically, humanity is SOL if the evil Serpend Brotherhood gets all three pieces. The only clues as to where the other three pieces are in in the Language of the Birds, which no living human being can translate- (of which, our hero does so in less than 6 hours). Thus, Flynn's on the job training begins.

Flynn finds himself on a flight to the Amazon while he steadily attempts to translate the language of the birds. Judson manages to come on Flynn's personal TV in coach, telling Flynn, "Trust No One." Unbeknownst to Flynn, the Serpent Brotherhood is on the plane, too! The horrors! A beautiful, but arrogant, Amazonian woman sits beside him, and eventually saves his hide (in a fantastic, yet unbelievable sort of way). When they escape to the jungle, she introduces herself as Nicole Noone (here's No One, get it!? Nyuck, Nyuck) and she has no interest in anything but keeping the Librarian alive. Thus, the adventure begins.

There was one romance scene, but really, most of it was just implied, not shown, so this movie is safe for the kiddies over the age of 8. There was great romantic tension between Flynn and Nicole. Wylie really flexed his comic muscle in this film (I never knew he had one). The best part, in my opinion, was when Bob Newhart got into a Ninja fight (you heard right!) with the Serpent Brotherhood (anybody else want a piece of me!?!). I laughed- Semper Fi! Overall this is a good movie if you need something funny and cute with good chemistry in it.

4 out of 5 stars Librarian - Quest for the Speak.......2007-05-09

I enjoyed this movie. I like the adventure and excitement of the whole thing. It is just plain fun with some imagination! Hope they make a third.

4 out of 5 stars Amusing.......2007-05-07

Noah Wyle exceeded expectations and Bob Newhart & Jane Curtain were fun to see in action. The premise of the film was interesting, and the special effects were just fine.

5 out of 5 stars the Librarian Quest for the Spear.......2007-03-29

Excellent, more of the movie on the dvd than on tv...I love this adventure!

4 out of 5 stars Not bad for a TV show.......2007-03-16

We actually watched Return to "King Solomon's Mines" first and enjoyed it, although the special effects were a bit cheesy. It was good family fare, so we bought "Quest for the Spear". We thought it was actually better than "Solomon's Mines" and the special effects were more believable in some instances. We call it "Indiana Jones Lite".

The latest testosterone-saturated blow-'em-up from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay (The Rock, Bad Boys) continues Hollywood's millennium-fueled fascination with the destruction of our planet. There's no arguing that the successful duo understands what mainstream American audiences want in their blockbuster movies--loads of loud, eye-popping special effects, rapid- fire pacing, and patriotic flag waving. Bay's protagonists--the eight crude, lewd, oversexed (but lovable, of course) oil drillers summoned to save the world from a Texas-sized meteor hurling toward the earth--are not flawless heroes, but common men with whom all can relate. In this huge Western-in-space soap opera, they're American cowboys turned astronauts. Sci-fi buffs will appreciate Bay's fetishizing of technology, even though it's apparent he doesn't understand it as anything more than flashing lights and shiny gadgets. Smartly, the duo also tries to lure the art-house crowd, raiding the local indie acting stable and populating the film with guys like Steve Buscemi, Billy Bob Thornton, Owen Wilson, and Michael Duncan, all adding needed touches of humor and charisma. When Bay applies his sledgehammer aesthetics to the action portions of the film, it's mindless fun; it's only when Armageddon tackles humanity that it becomes truly offensive. Not since Mississippi Burning have racial and cultural stereotypes been substituted for characters so blatantly--African Americans, Japanese, Chinese, Scottish, Samoans, Muslims, French ... if it's not white and American, Bay simplifies it. Or, make that white male America; the film features only three notable females--four if you count the meteor, who's constantly referred to as a "bitch that needs drillin'," but she's a hell of a lot more developed and unpredictable than the other women characters combined. Sure, Bay's film creates some tension and contains some visceral moments, but if he can't create any redeemable characters outside of those in space, what's the point of saving the planet? --Dave McCoy

Product Description

From the blockbuster-making team who produced and directed PEARL HARBOR and THE ROCK (Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay) comes the biggest movie of 1998 -- ARMAGEDDON! Starring the explosive talents of Bruce Willis (DIE HARD), Academy Award(R)-winners Ben Affleck (GOOD WILL HUNTING) and Billy Bob Thornton (SLING BLADE), Liv Tyler (INVENTING THE ABBOTTS), Steve Buscemi (CON AIR), and Will Patton (INVENTING THE ABBOTTS), ARMAGEDDON is a meteor storm of action-adventure moviemaking that has you on the edge of your seat forgetting to breathe! When NASA's executive director, Dan Truman (Thornton), realizes the Earth has 18 days before it's obliterated by a meteor the size of Texas, he has only one option -- land a ragtag team of roughneck oil drillers on the asteroid and drop a nuclear warhead into its core. Spectacular special effects, laugh-out-loud humor, great characters, riveting storytelling, and heartfelt emotion make ARMAGEDDON an exhilarating thrill ride you'll want to experience like there's no tomorrow.

5 out of 5 stars If I wanted Reality I could just go to work...........2007-07-05

Armageddon is one of my top ten movies of all time. Out of my 750 DVD Collection I own, I often find myself reaching right past movies I haven't even watched yet so I can sit back and watch Armageddon once more.

It takes a lot to get anyone to watch a movie several times over and over, especially with the enourmous number of movies out there to chose from, but the wit and storyline just really flows together and the one liners are hilarious.

One of my all time favorite lines came from this movie, from the character "Rockhound" played by Steve Buscemi: "You know we're sitting on four million pounds of fuel, one nuclear weapon and a thing that has 270,000 moving parts built by the lowest bidder. Makes you feel good, doesn't it?"

The roster of all-star cast members is amazing and in my opinion, they all showed why they are all-stars, it was a great performance from everyone.

Everyone complains that the movie isn't realistic? It's a sci-fi movie for goodness sakes. If your standard for a good movie is that is has to be feasible then you might as well completely wipe out more than a few entire categories of movies altogether.

Like I said in the title of this review, if I wanted realism and feasibility I would just go about my life, I go to the movies to get away from realism.

5 out of 5 stars "We have 18 days before it hits Earth...".......2007-06-10

This action-packed, fast paced, movie has it all and it keeps your attention as well. People need to understand that Hollywood makes millions of dollars with this particular style of film, and who is to blame them. If something gives you a positive outcome, then it would be foolish not to attempt it again. I also understand that there are those movies that are on a category of their own and that break the boundaries of a typical Hollywood movie. But, Armaggedon serves its main purpose. It keeps you entertained and it has all the elements that make an action movie great. Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer are a lethal combination when it comes to this particular genre of movies, and I feel that is an honest compliment to admit that they are two of the best out there. Job well done!

4 out of 5 stars Armageddon.......2007-06-08

All the right stuff for this gang.... What a way to save the world.

5 out of 5 stars Action Packed And A Whole Lot Of Fun!.......2007-06-04

I don't understand it when people say that this movie is not realistic, it never claims to be! It is a fun ride with with a great sound track and cast. I don't want this type of movie to be realistic, it would be too boring! This was the biggest hit of the year it was released for good reason......IT'S ENTERTAINING!!!!! That is what a movie should be! I watch a movie to escape and be swooped away from reality and that is what Armageddon does very well. If you can't just sit back and enjoy this movie with some popcorn and a soda than I feel sorry for you. Life is too short to not enjoy a great flick like Armageddon! I can't wait until it comes out in HD! Now go put the DVD in the player and hang on! :-)

1 out of 5 stars The perfect movie for stupid people!.......2007-05-30

Armageddon ranks up there with one of the absolute worst movies I've had the misfortune of seeing. It gives new meaning to the phrase 'over the top'. (Bigger is not better). Why is it that Hollywood insists on giving 99% of the attention to ridiculous special fx and 1% to the script/writing? Mega budget blockbusters like Armageddon are the most guilty of misappropriation of resources. Somebody please make Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer stop ...

Our favorite American hero has returned in this rerelease of the now cult-classic G.I. Joe movie from 1987. Once again G.I. Joe must protect the world from total obliteration. Cobra, the deadliest of foes and leader of an underground race of snake people, is proving to be a great threat to humankind. After spending many generations underground, he plans to take over the world again (with the help of his evil foes Pythona and Serpentor) by releasing deadly spores into the atmosphere. These spores can transform all life into the weakest of creatures, which means humans could potentially devolve into amoebas. However, in order to accomplish this, Cobra must acquire the Broadcast Energy Transmitter. (The BET activates the spores.) Luckily G.I. Joe is there to stop Cobra and his evil army. There are terrific fight scenes in which nobody gets hurt (like in all great A-Team episodes) and the cartoon style is true to the G.I. Joe character. All your favorite G.I. Joe characters are here, including Falcon, Bazooka, Alpine, Duke, Snowjob, and Roadblock. Starring voices also help lend a hand: Don Johnson, Burgess Meredith, and Sergeant Slaughter. Forever and always G.I. Joe will be "fighting for freedom wherever there's trouble, over land and sea and air!" --Samantha Allen Storey

Description

A 40,000-year-old race of snake people resurface, and with help of Serpentor, Desto, Baroness and Dr. Mindbender, plan to eliminate all of mankind and rebuild Cobrala. Once rulers of Earth, the Snake people were driven underground by ice-age temperatures. While in exile, they developed a plant whose spores turn ordinary men into mindless, weak animals. The key to their plan is G.I. Joe's secret project--the Broadcast Energy Emitter. Only this device generates enough heat so that the spores can mature. Humankind's very existance depends on G.I. Joe, but are they strong enough, smart enough, cunning enough to fight a warrior race with 40,000 years of experience?

3 out of 5 stars Was never and still not a fan of G.I. Joe.......2007-06-15

Overall, I hate G.I.Joe. I dont own the seasons. I hate anything that contains a whole lot of shooting and nobody is ever shot. And if they were shot, it was never, ever, fatally. If there's ammo flying. Animated or otherwise, I want to see people shot dead! GI Joe never gave me that. And there was no blood. With that being said. I pretty much thought this movie was decent. Because it had a little blood. It continued with Cobra fighting for world domination. And with the Joes trying to stop them.

I dont know about others, but I liked the dark setting of this one. And that opening was to die for. This movie delivers more with the action. There is fisticuffs all over this movie. The story in my opinion is a mixed bag. They do a good job in my opinion with the origin of Cobra the organization and Cobra Commander himself. The plot leading up to the end was ok at best. This is what dragged the movie down alot for me. The new characters on both sides just weren't very likable. Tell you how popular they were. Except for Falcon, none of them made an appearance in the episodes after the movie. 'Nuff said.

Well GI JOE the Movie should appeal to most fans. I thought it was alright even though I'm not a fan of GI Joe. This is the only thing of GI Joe in my collection. If you love the series then pick this up. But to those who are new to this should probably rent it. If you didn't follow the seasons its possible you won't enjoy this the same way a fan would because you don't know the characters. Still if your looking for a movie full of fistfights, you might not be disappointed with this.

5 out of 5 stars A fun time for Joe Fans.......2006-11-06

This movie had its problems, but looking at it now I see a lot of fun. I remember as a kid I didn't like some of the things that happened in the movie. Now I see it as a good mix of G.I. Joe and science fiction two things I have always loved. I never thought of G.I. Joe as science fiction as a kid, but looking back I wonder how I missed all the the super science G.I. Joe had in it. The move's big flaw is that the characters from the show were not used that much in it. They focused on new characters who we didn't get enough time to really care about like we did the old favorites. Still, it is a movie all Joe fans should see. I have shown it to some who have never seen an episode of G.I. Joe and they loved it. It got them to look at the other episodes. Check it out... and... Yo Joe!

3 out of 5 stars Got to get tough Yo Joe!.......2005-09-06

In the 80s cartoon graduation went something like this... He-Man, Transformers, GI Joe, and Ninja Turtles. Yes there were other shows you may have seen, even other shows you may have enjoyed more, but there is no denying that if you were a boy between 5 - 11 these were the shows you mainly remember watching.

G.I. Joe is the series for the patriotic gung-ho attitude of freedom over communism that the 80s really flaunted with stuff like Rocky 4 and the Coca-Cola vs. Pepsi "coke wars". G.I. Joe is also one of the corniest yet lovable animated shows of that time. The series was a constant hit or miss. You either had brilliant shows with plausible plots (like Cobra ruining the oil supply) or farfetched fantasy (The Egyptian gods episode).

So what was G.I. Joe the movie? Well you take the brilliance and mix it with the bizzare and you get Cobra-la. If you take it as is the movie is really action packed and fun, but unfortunately it's supposed to be an awesome American military force that fights terrorism. Instead it looks like "Alien vs Predator" meets "Starship Troopers".

The public service annoucements are the one saving grace. They are truly entertaining and more memorable than the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Too bad America can't do nothing this creative anymore. Japan could teach this young generation something!.......2005-08-08

This movie change the way we look at cartoon's forever. Kids were blown away by the animation the way the drawing's were so mature looking and not cartoony. Back then U.S.A. could make good orginal cartoons, drawing them almost like it's an anime. The Joe's deal with an 40,000 year old race of snake which looks half snake half human. Shargent Slutter the wrestler had his cartoon character on this movie. The action is way cooler in this movie then the series.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired casting and brilliant writing.......2005-03-24

Brilliant to get Burgess Meredith, who played the tragically martyred journalist Ernie Pyle in the original movie of the STORY OF G.I. JOE, to take the role of Globulus in this sequel made some 40 years later! Okay, it's not strictly a sequel, but talk about going over from the forces of light over to the dark side! No one does it better than Burgess Meredith, as he proved playing the Penguin in the 1960s TV series of BATMAN, and now here in the middle of this stylish movie cartoon.

Some complain that the emotional tone of the movie is too different from the TV series we all grew up watching. On the other hand some of the exact same writers were employed on both, including Ron Friedman, who wrote "Revenge of the Cobra." I saw his movie (that he wrote) BROTHER BEAR and I'm looking forward to his next animated special, Disney's new one CHICKEN LITTLE.

Friedman also wrote the TRANSFORMERS MOVIE. Where the hell is his OSCAR? Better send in Tunnel Rat and Dial Tone to retrieve it, boys!

5 out of 5 stars break your heart with a view of how it could have been...........2007-06-08

JFK may not have been the best man for the job, but who could have done in those days? We have since placed him on an impossible pedestal and now that LBJ is the latest villain of that day in November this film has even more resonance. Superb casting has the best RFK ever, a Really Creepy Hoover. This film works best for those of us who were there and know the players.
When Mick Jagger sings that it was you and me who did the deed, I need to refer you to another 5 star film, "Interview with the Assassin" (2002).

4 out of 5 stars Good low budget movie for time travel junkies.......2007-06-01

First off all, I don't even remember Bruce Campbell in the movie, but if he was, so what? Honestly, what is with these Bruce Campbell junkies? Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed The Adventures of Brisco County Jr and wish it continued, but the fact that he had a small part in this movie doesn't really matter.

I'm a time travel junkie. I love stories about time travel. And almost every movie or novel gets it wrong by involving impossible paradoxes. This movie didn't. For that it gets an automatic 3 stars.

The plot is the dad from The Waltons comes back in time and warns JFK and RFK about JFK's upcoming untimely death. A lot of the movie is spent dealing with their need to be convinced that this is for real. However, once convinced, can they actually stop it from happening?

I don't want to give too much of the plot away, other than to say, I liked the follow up after the immediate issues are dealt with. I enjoyed finding out what happened to the then young future time traveller in a few year's time.

The actor who played RFK nailed it. As I recall, the JFK actor did a terrible job. Must not have been much budget left after hiring Ralph Waite and Bruce Campbell. Would like to see again to catch more details.

3 out of 5 stars JFK.......2007-05-25

It was an interesting twist on things. The actor portraying Dan Rather however sounded rather chppy and did a bad job on his acting. A lot of it was art. It had certain twists with it too.

1 out of 5 stars remarkable in its banality.......2007-05-22

In customer reviews there is excessive use of hyperbole and exaggeration when reviewing films. Way, way too many times the phrase "Worst Film Ever" or "worst film I have ever seen" is casually and capriciously used, even though the latter claim is most likely inaccurate and the first one almost certainly is inaccurate.

However, this film may well merit some of the more scathing aspersions. The general premise is not all that bad, although hugely farfetched (a time-traveller goes back in time to stop the JFK assassination). I am a HUGE fan of alternate/counterfactual history (as confirmed by my book buying patterns). I was intrigued by the storyline of this film and had very high hopes for it being an interesting and fascinating movie. Done well, it could have been an intriguing and maybe even a great film. Yet a lack of budget and an ENORMOUS lack of imagination made this a weak community stock theater version of an English composition essay. Besides the very conspicuous lack of even a vague reference to any scientific or sci-fi explanation, Papa Walton shows up in a diver's suit (the old fashioned kind like you see in fish aquariums) in the middle of JFK's supposedly secure hotel suite, then dodderingly proceeds to explain that he went back in time to prevent the assassination (no scientific mumbo-jumbo included).

Although the film does make an attempt to present an alternative to what might have been in history (the consequences of JFK's more unethical side catches up with him), mainly it is an embarrassingly bad soliloquy to a time-traveling stalker's love for Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. An awkwardly large part of the film was Ralph Waite's character talking about his love for the First Lady (telling her directly), then asking for a slow dance with her as a reward for saving the President's life - I kid you not!

The acting was sluggish and palpably uninspired. I was literally embarrassed for the actors at a few points in the film. I swear it is as if the cast was using body language as if to say, "how did I get talked into this film, and when OH DEAR GOD when will it end?". Seriously, the actors playing the first couple were listless and seemed to be uncomfortable, although that part is understandable. Ralph Waite's performance or character was just plain creepy and off-putting, combining near-senility with a stalker's eeriness. Even Bruce Campbell (yes, I am a fan), who can generally be counted on to add some energy and interest to a film with his appearances, is both underused and poorly directed.

This is way too much like a story written by some marginally skilled Kennedyphile who pines for the days of Camelot, complete with the embellished and exaggerated notions of virtue that were all too often imputed to it. If those who rave about this film can be honest with themselves, the notion that all of America's problems being solved as a result of an unabridged JFK (and later RFK) administration are a little on the ridiculous side, though he no doubt would have made some accomplishments.

Political leanings aside, you don't have to be a conservative or Republican to dislike this movie, which had an interesting and promising idea but became a weak and lazy result full of poor writing and acting. Do not be mislead by the inaccurate reviews that tell you otherwise. If you want a good film to make you feel good about the Kennedy presidency, watch THIRTEEN DAYS (although too much of that is focused on Kevin Costner's character).

2 out of 5 stars Some good, some strange........2007-05-15

I gave this dvd as a gift and was told by the receiver that: the JFK what-if thing was cool, it was at times strangely presented, and the Bruce Campbell character was not in the movie that much. He (the gift receiver) is a huge Campbell fan! Passing on this movie is probably a good idea. I will watch it myself through Blockbuster-Online in the future.

4 out of 5 stars Intelligent insanity.......2007-06-20

British humor is unique and could be considered an art form in and of itself. British humor in the form of a science-fiction adventure movie is something else altogether. This movie, along with Brazil and the Adventures of Baron Munchausen, form a trilogy of fantasy classics by Terry Gilliam. Whereas Brazil is more of an apocalyptic view of the future, and Baron Munchausen is steeped in Greek mythology and European history, this movie is more of a pure adventure story with lots of ridiculous scenes thrown in.

The plot of Time Bandits is simple. Six dwarfs, servants of God, steal God's map of time-space and use it travel throughout human history. They stop at various times and places to steal loot from wealthy individuals, such as Napoleon (Ian Holm) and King Agamemnon (Sean Connery). Along the way, the sink with the Titanic, and get robbed by Robin Hood (John Cleese). They pick up an English boy living at the end of the 20th century, and bring him along in their travels. In the end, they encounter Evil himself, and have to be rescued by God.

This movie is classic British humor. Sarcasm and wit overflow; action scenes are funny because of how ludicrous they are, and scene after scene pokes fun at the powerful. The scenes with the dwarfs are also great, as they alternate between hitting each other Three Stooges style to performing feats worthy of any circus. For such an old movie, the film quality was great. The special effects were believable, but did not distract from the storyline. The dialog was also good. Unfortunately, the soundtrack was nondescript, and parts of it sounded like it was copied from The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. But overall, a good movie and quite interesting to watch.

3 out of 5 stars Classic but not perfect.......2007-06-07

Unlike many Americans, I have this love of British humor. Or would that be humour? Well, there is something to English hilarity; that dry, mature comedy that carries with it an adolescent streak Americans too often translate as juvenile in their our own format. True, Gilliam is American, but his humor is far from. In Time Bandits, one of his best works, we get to travel alongside the Supreme Being's ousted aides as they try to find a new living as time traveling thieves. Of course they fail at every turn until their greed lands them in the hands of Evil himself. David Warner is the stand out in this movie. I literally love every performance he has ever done. And Sean Connery, who knew he could give a subtle, unselfish performance. There are plot holes which nagged at me, especially the point that everyone, no matter the era, speaks English! Still, this is an adventure that can't help but to resurrect the child in you. Movies like this are a rarity in the modern age.

5 out of 5 stars The Folks Who Made This Film Had To Be High....Thankfully!!.......2007-03-29

I have always thought this movie was one of the strangest movies around. I really enjoy dark movies and this one is no exception. The storyline twists and turns so much. The characters are great along with the little guy actors who played them. The scene on the beach when they break the mirror is cool. This dvd is better than the first edition released but it could still be done better I would think. It gets five stars because it's a great adventure movie that's really dark and twisted.

A crazy movie on the lines of Baron Munchusen. Fans of John Cleese will like this.

Star Wars meets A Wrinkle in Time in this adventure of an intergalactic war and one unassuming young man who holds the key to dimensional travel, the legacy of his mysterious adventurer father. Boyish Josh Charles is the lucky Luke Skywalker stand-in, a good-natured underachiever shocked out of his lovelorn moping when gorgeous guerrilla fighter Andrea Roth takes the battle to his bedroom. Rutger Hauer is the coffee-chugging freedom fighter who is roused from retirement to fill out the trio and face dimensional mob boss Stuart Wilson to settle the fate of the universe. This obviously low budget picture makes the most of limited special effects and striking settings--notably an elevator ride that turns into a free-floating mind game hanging in space and a knock-down, drag-out finale that sends our hapless hero popping up all over the universe. Hauer makes for a surprisingly charismatic mercenary turned father figure and Charles is modestly charming, once he loses the smart-ass wisecracks. Though it reaches for a scope that's beyond its means, Crossworlds is an entertaining bit of sci-fi fluff. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2006-12-01

I bought two sci-fi movies at the same time...this one and Velocity Trap. I have to say, I enjoyed Crossworlds far more than the other.

2 out of 5 stars Low Budget.......2006-07-01

The plot and its development are extremely weak. Acting is marginal and special effects are questionable. What can I say, I love SciFi, have a thing about time travel flicks and enjoy punishing myself with B rated SciFi movies. If you're looking for quality entertainment, then this is not the choice for you. If you're a nut about SciFi, go for it Bro.

2 out of 5 stars Cheesy Sci-Fi flick only has *some* good things to offer, but its really silly..........2005-11-12

Josh Charles (S.W.A.T., Tv's Sports Night) finds out that he is the bearer of a key that can make you travel into different dimensions. Andrea Roth brings him to her friend, played by Rutger Hauer (The Hitcher, Sin City) who guides Charles and tells him that his father was a timedimensional warrior and that he could be too as well. On the evil end, baddie Stuart Wilson (No Escape, The Mask of Zorro) wants the key and the septer that goes along with it so he can fuse worlds together and be the ruler and what not and the trio must bring back the septer to the right place before evil hands get on it and the fate of the world is at risk. Interesting idea is squandered by sillyness and dumb dialouge and some pretty crummy acting, altough Charles saves this from being a total disaster. It's good to see Hauer not being a bad guy but he's wasted along with Wilson. AND, well, it was surprising to see Jack Black (School of Rock, King Kong) in this movie...one before he became famous. Black does his mannerisms and speech. Watch it once and then dimension jump the hell out of the room.

3 out of 5 stars Ham and Cheese with Rye.......2005-08-20

This was obviously a pilot for a proposed TV series that never made it out of the cutting room. Josh Charles plays a heroic nerd whose special power seems to be being able to take a punch in the face and bounce right back. Andrea Roth is the cheesecake who motivates Josh's character to go from zero to hero in 90 minutes and Rutger Hauer is a cross between Obiwon Kenobi and Han Solo with a touch of Mad Max thrown in for style.

The company that made "She-Ra, Princess of Power" should probably have sued for copyright infringement (and that may be why nothing ever came out of this pproject) because there are strong similarities between the two stories. Princess Adora - er, Andrea Roth plays a mighty female warrior from a parallel dimension conquered long ago by mystical Warlords. One of those Warlords wants to invade Earth's dimension but for some strange reason - even though he and his henchmen bounce back and forth freely between the two worlds - needs a mystical staff and gem hidden in our world to bring his army through.

The Final Battle between Charles and the Warlord seems to be stolen from the ending of Waxworks II, which was done much better in my humble opinion. Still, there's worse dreck out there and Hauer is a pleasure to watch so I'm giving it 3 stars for trying.

3 out of 5 stars Nice little mind teaser.......2005-06-18

This low budget movie isnt the greatest thing you'll ever see but it was quite intriguing as a story and well executed. The actors are all well cast and its a pity it didnt have the budget to make it more complete and visible -or to use it as the start of a series as mentioned elsewhere. If you like interesting stories, or sci-f, this is one that can stretch your mind a bit for the evening. It's good to see different dimensions, rather than different planets and worlds, used for exploration. Pleased I bought it.

Description

Something bizarre has happened abourd flight #29...a nightmare so chilling, so frightening, so unrelenting it could only come from the mind of Stephen King. Now the master storyteller of our time gives terror a new name in THE LANGOLIERS. A jet leaves on a red-eye flight from Los Angeles to Boston. But early in the flight, ten passengers awaken to a startling realization: All of the other passengers have vanished - and the ground below is only...ground. But once they manage to land the plane, the situation doesn't improve. No one is there...the air is still...the clocks have stopped...and a dread, evil presence bent on their destruction is headed straight for them. Based on the novella from the best-selling anthology Four Past Midnight, Patricia Wettig (City Slickers II), Bronson Pincho (Beverly Hills Cop), Dean Stockwell (The Player), and David Morse (The Getaway) stare into the jaws of oblivion in this nightmare from the mind of Stephen King.

1 out of 5 stars Are you ready for some fun? here we go:.......2007-06-06

1. Buy it used, for the .80 cents its worth.
2. Get some old family members together, preferably distant cousins and some nasty in-laws.
3. Find a torch, a nail gun and perhaps an ignitor
4. Perform operation in a safe place, away from trees or animals
5. Take DVD, still unopened from packaging, ie. either mailing bubble or shrink wrap, and light up the sky. (ritual must be performed at night to get full affect)

It is too bad, had some really talented actors in it. It was painful to watch this. I am sorry some talent will take any work, just to be on screen. This was appalling.

5 out of 5 stars I was once obsessed with this movie.......2007-02-18

The Langoliers is probably the most interesting movie I've ever seen. I've seen TONS of movies. Suspense, drama, horror, comedy, family films, you name it. But the Langoliers is probably one of my very favorite films.

When this film first came out in the mid 90's, I was addicted to it. I would go over to my aunt's house every weekend and watch it. What made it so addicting to me, you wonder? I've always had an obsession with the thought of wondering if somewhere in the universe a world EXACTLY like this one existed. BUT, if there was a way we could somehow arrive to that mirror world, would EVERYTHING be exactly the same? Wouldn't some things be different? Wouldn't it be fun to figure out the things that make that world different from the one we've lived on for years?

The Langoliers is almost like that game where someone shows you two almost-identical pictures and you have to find the one minor thing that makes them different from each other. That's a good way of explaining the point of this film. To me, this is something EXTREMELY fascinating. Imagine if I could somehow travel to another world exactly like Earth where all the continents and oceans are located in the same exact place, and arrive to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Something about the city isn't quite right. What's wrong?

Let's say, just like in the film, as I go around exploring the city in my attempt to figure out the difference between this abandoned and unsettling Philadelphia compared to the Philadelphia I grew up in, I keep hearing strange sounds in the background, and I have no idea what it is. Wouldn't that be scary? The sounds continue nonstop, and they get louder and louder as *something* gets closer and closer. I have to hurry up and find a way out of there, because it dawns on me that this Philadelphia is actually a nightmare version of the real thing. It turns out nobody lives in this nightmare Philadelphia, even though all the buildings and bridges are still standing exactly like they were in the real world. But what's going on?

In the case of the movie, everything takes place at an airport. Nobody is around, and the main characters continue to hear strange sounds in the background as they try to discover what's wrong. This is some really good stuff to me, and that's why I gave the movie a perfect rating.

3 out of 5 stars Wonderfully unique premise, but bad execution.......2007-01-18

I basically agree with all those who have stated that the acting is generally substandard, the ending is the epitome of cheesiness (especially the wimpy jump for joy at the very end)and the fx leave much to be desired. But a couple points that I noticed that have yet to be covered. First, how come the langoliers don't devour the plane? They have plenty of opportunities, and even when the plane is in the air they seem more than capable of catching up with it and out-manuevering it. Shouldn't they have immediately gone after it after the last piece of land disappears into the void? Second, although the langoliers themselves were extremely cheesy, I would still prefer a world full of them and devoid of suicide inducing people as seen when they finally make it back to the present. Also, if they're in the future when they land at LAX, then how come all the buildings and trees and other objects are present (besides the people of course)when the "world is waiting to be born?" Shouldn't they be standing in a blackened void if everything has yet to exist? Perhaps a better way of visualizing the transfer of future time to present time should've been to have the langoliers throwing up objects instead of eating them. LOL After all, everything that exists could've been the wretched vomit of some hideous creatures. Lovely, eh?

4 out of 5 stars Nicely Done..........2006-12-28

The standout of King's Four Past Midnight was the Twilight Zone-esque, The Langoliers, a very good entry into the time-twister category in an otherwise uneven collection of four King novellas. Given the mixed bag of Steven King adapatations, I had low expectations for this 1995 TV movie. Turned out to be a pleasant surprise...

- Direction: Nice job with pacing. Things move along briskly, and the three hours run time is over before you know it.

- Script: The editing of the source material is marginal and sensible; it is very faithful to the original story.

- Casting: Casting is damned near perfect except perhaps for the Dinah character who is somewhat grating but not disasterously so. The actors are pretty close to how I envisioned them.

- Acting: Nice job by the cast. Bronson Pinchot as Toomey is especially good along with Mark Lindsay Chapman as Nick.

- Special Effects: Better than expected for 1995 TV movie CGI effects. Sure, they're cartoony but given what the script called for them to execute on a TV movie budget using CGI, which was cutting edge at the time, they're fine. Do they compare with modern 100 million plus budget theatrical film effects from a decade later? No. But is this a realistic expectation? Again, no.

Not the worst King adaptation I've seen - not by a long stretch. To the contrary, this is one of the more credible TV movie stabs at science fiction. It's an entertaining, competently executed, and faithful adaptation of a very good short story by Steven King that's well worth a look.

3 out of 5 stars I would like to see this gven an improved release........2006-08-15

If this were released on a better disk with better special effects, this would very much be worth the price. Other than that, it is an okay buy, but it needs much improvement.

The latest testosterone-saturated blow-'em-up from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay (The Rock, Bad Boys) continues Hollywood's millennium-fueled fascination with the destruction of our planet. There's no arguing that the successful duo understands what mainstream American audiences want in their blockbuster movies--loads of loud, eye-popping special effects, rapid-fire pacing, and patriotic flag waving.

Description

Bruce Willis and and an all-star cast of roughneck oil drillers blast off on a mission to save the planet in Michael Bay's doomsday space epic.

What's the sitch in Kim Possible's first TV movie? A downer: Ron (voiced by Will Freidle) is moving to Norway, meaning an end to civilization as we know it--or at least an end to the Possible-Stoppable team. That's bad news for Kim (Christy Carlson Romano). Losing your trusty sidekick is so not the way you want to tackle a cadre of bad guys trying to use mystical monkey powers to alter the universe's time stream for unspeakably evil purposes. To stop them, Kim has to take a wild ride to her pre-hero past and a dystopian future, but just when things are looking grim, remember that anything's possible for a Possible. Particularly Kim Possible, who's still tough, witty, and refreshingly free of any saucy teen attitude. Guest voices include Michael Dorn, Michael Clarke Duncan, Freddie Prinze Jr., Vivica Fox, and Elliott Gould. (Ages 6 to 10; cartoon action) --David Horiuchi

    Description

Kim, along with her faithful sidekick Ron Stoppable and Rufus, must triumph in the present and the past or the future will be history! Featuring awesome bonus features, a notable guest cast -- including Freddie Prinze Jr., Dakota Fanning, Kelly Ripa, and Raven -- and a whole lot more, A SITCH IN TIME is SO not your average movie.

This movie was actually really enjoyable. Featuring several of my favourite villians teaming up to destroy the Kim/Ron team, the premise of the move was intriguing and the story line was well done. I liked the future vision and the dialogue was snappy and funny. This is well worth a watch if you enjoy Kim Possible.
