Great outdoor scenes, and a good movie ...............2007-02-13

Maybe this 1959 version did not have a big budget like the other version with
Pat Boone, but after seeing again, i was pleasently surprise but some of
the caves and mountain scenes,,, as most of the movie is filmed in the great
outdoors the movie moves along pretty good. Always fun to watch a different
version of your favorite movie, and this one left me with a smile.
Great for the whole family. Enjoy

WHERE TIME BEGAN - FABULOUS JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EART.......2007-01-12

This is a low budget version of the 1959 classic Journey to the Center of the Earth. Similar plot with all the character going to the center of the earth & finding monsters. Some of the monsters are really cool to me while one of them , a King Kong ape wanna-be looks like Edward G Robinson and has a super goofy look to it. Characters and situations arent up to the 1959 version with James Mason (no remake to me has been nearly as good). I thought it was entertaining for the most part, & some changes in the story (the man from the future joining the foursome) and there was an uneccessary vomit scene, but overall not too bad. Better than a lot of J Piqor Simon movies like Pieces , the Unearthling, etc. This may have been his biggest budgeted movie for all I know.

This has got to be one of the top five worst movies of all time. They have some nerve using the same title as the classic Jules Vern movie (1959).My only recommendation is don't waste your time or money.

Why does this release keeping getting dropped? I know the last time it turned out it was being released by some sort of bootleg company so it was stopped. I wish a company like Anchor Bay would get the rights to this film and release it already. It's a crucial 80s slasher to have in your collection.

NOT "WHERE TIME BEGAN".......2005-10-26

It's kind of amusing that everyone thinks that this version of JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH starring EMO PHILLIPS is actually the spanish film WHERE TIME BEGAN. Of course it does not help that MGM and AMAZON have listed the credits for WHERE TIME BEGAN, which is also an adaption of JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH. This film is actually from 1988 and I think even more obscure than WHERE TIME BEGAN if such a thing is possible.

I bought this version knowing it was not WHERE TIME BEGAN. I wish it was WHERE TIME BEGAN because I love that film. I have never seen this 1988 version starring comedian EMO PHILLIPS but I have always wanted to.

Things to Come, the movie, is a mixture of two of H.G. Wells's books. The first part is out of The War In The Air. The idea is that the nations of the world end up starting a war very much like the First World War but with more powerful weapons, mostly in the form of aircraft, which causes civilization to fall. The war scenes, some of them footage of real military equipment and others very cool looking models, seem very realistic. In the end, H.G. Wells's other book, The Shape Of Things To Come, is brought into the movie. The book is about the wonderful, bright, future and the film shows a future where airmen have joined together in their wish to bring peace to the world, using science and bravery, by overthrowing the old ways and the old world. In the end mankind takes the first steps to the stars.
The second movie is called Journey To The Center Of Time. The idea is that scientists are trying to find a way to peek into the past or the future. But an accident breaks the lab away from the present, tossing it into the river of time and space, first far into the future and then back into the past. There seem to be some complaints that dinosaurs did not exist one million years BC but nobody says the giant lizard is a dinosaur. It fact it could be a giant Komodo Dragon.
OK, maybe I am being silly, but outside of the somewhat bad science, the movie isn't that bad. It isn't great but it isn't that bad. I remember seeing a part of it as a kid and being impressed that the bad guy ended up killing himself.
On the other hand I am not too impressed by the new lab coming out of no where. Maybe the movie producers wrote themselves into a corner and they had to find a way out?
This disc was worth getting used but don't buy it new without a REALLY good reason.

JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF TIME is one of those cheaply made science fiction films whose miniscule budgets are matched only by an equally miniscule plot, direction, scripting, and acting. In this clunker, Scott Brady is your typically beefy industrialist whose only connection to the advancement of science is the financial bottom line. His unwillingness to open the vaults of further funding forces his scientists, lamely played by Gigi Perreau and Anthony Eisley, to prematurely loop ahead to the future in a time machine. Naturally, there is a mishap that lands then squarely in a nuclear war, whose own weirdly made up leaders (Lyle Waggonner and Pouppe Gamin) do little more than prance about for their few minutes of screen time. Brady and his time travelling cohorts travel back to 1,000,000 BC where they meet dinosaurs. Apparently, the script writers failed to indicate that the dinosaurs died out when a comet smacked into the earth 65 million years ago. At this point, whatever plot coherence there was dissolves into a misty mess of chintzy special effects whose only apparent purpose is to divert the viewer's attention from the T-Rex size plot holes. Further complicating matters is a series of potentially interesting temporal paradoxes that might have engaged the viewer had the script respected his intelligence to the point of incorporating them into a coherent plot. By the final reel, the viewer is asked to accept yet again another dopey science fiction cop out ending of How We All Began. JTTCOT had the potential to be more than all hands concerned made it. But because it groped, however dimly, toward Saying Something Interesting, I gave it two stars.

This is a review of the combined product and the rating has no relationship to the individual movies. Some one is getting over zealous they just tied a Sci-Fi Classic "Things to Come" to a lackluster dud "Journey to the Center of Time". Just incase some one has not pointed out the differences. I figure there was room left over on the DVD and instead of adding extras they would fill the space with no cost fluff. You will want to look at the reviews for the individual movies before buying this hybrid or low-breed.

Cheap Rip-Off.......2003-03-08

This double feature by (shudder) Madacy contains two amazingly poor looking films: "Things to Come" and "Journey to the Center of Time." "Things to Come" is a thought provoking film based on H.G. Welles's book "The Shape of Things to Come," but you wouldn't be able to tell it by this shoddy transfer in which none of the dialogue is even understandable and the picture is dark. A much nicer version is available from Image Entertainment/Wade Williams Collection. Get it.
"Journey to the Center of Time" is a terrible, lifeless, shamefully low budget film in which almost nothing happens. Despite the box's claim that it's "Stimulating, exciting, and great fun!", there is not a speck of entertainment to be had (unless you count Lyle Waggoner's cameo. I didn't). The transfer fares slightly better, but it's still barely watchable.
There are a few extras, too. A Sci-Fi Oscar Winners Index, Sci-Fi Common Themes, Special FX Notes, and Trivia Questions. They're not very good at all, but at least they're reasonably abundant.

Yikes! This one stinketh! Imagine a horridly dull room full of hideously dull people doing horrendously dull things. Now, imagine that this orgy of boredom can actually transport us into the far-flung future! JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF TIME is quite the bitter pill to swallow. It drags on endlessly, going nowhere, until finally fizzling into oblivion! If giant lizards and Lyle Waggoner do it for you, this could be your dream-come-true! Otherwise, it's a doggy-do sandwich for sure! No redeeming qualities whatsoever! Avoid with extreme prejudice...

I'm quite sure your own time travel experience will exceed that of the characters in this film. Imagine traveling five thousand years into the future just to meet Lyle Waggoner (if you do meet him, though, try to spell his name right in the credits next time). The sight of a pasty-faced alien Lyle Waggoner is so repellant, that this film's characters travel millions of years backward in time just to get away from him. This also serves the purpose of introducing a dinosaur into the film; as we all know, any time travel movie simply must have a dinosaur in it. I understand the dinosaur union is very insistent on that.

Journey to the Center of Time basically exists to be made fun of, but the thing that bothered me most about this exceedingly low-budget flick was the fact that the writer started making stuff up at the end. I mean, he went way beyond paradox and half-baked theory and just threw in something completely impossible without even bothering to explain it (which he could not have done if he had tried). That rubbed me the wrong way and ruined the whole effect of the one decent plot twist he had just pulled off.

This is not the 'Time' travel movie to see.......2003-02-04

I purchased this movie for a measly sum of money, and since I'm a fan of bad movies, I wasn't really disappointed. Made in 1967, this film offers nothing new or interesting to the idea of time travel or science fiction.
The plot? "I just inherited all this money from my daddy, and I want to know what you deranged scientists are doing with it." and they respond thusly; "We're travelling through time with it, here we'll show you right after we bore you with Einstein quotes. Whoops!" etc.
Disappointingly long and oft-times mistaken dialogue, this movie joureys to an extremely boring future that does include, as a highlight, an attractive alien spacecraft and its attractive female leader. This is subsequently destroyed by the low-brow humans of the future. The crew then attempts to go home, but overshoots into the far past with dinasaurs. The film-makers should have taken the cue from 'Journey To The Center Of The Earth' with Pat Boone, and not used a pet lizard to play a dinosaur. It always looks ludicrous, and it is no exception in this film. I won't give anymore spoilers, just don't pay good money to purchase it with out prior knowledge.

Basic premise is an attempt to look into the future and into the past actually forces the lab to go into the future into the past. The lab is stuffed with good guy, bad guy, and screaming girl. The good guy does good things. The bad guy does bad things. The girl screams a lot. While back at the ranch, they talk of a lot about how they've lost the lab.

Gruff, hard-nosed new boss Stanton takes over a scientific research company upon the death of his benevolent father. Scientists Manning, Gordon and White, who are very close to a breakthrough in time travel, are told by Stanton they must have results in 24 hours or face a funding cut-off. Trying to push their equipment past its safe operating limit they travel into the far future and distant past, with Stanton along as an accidental participant, unaware that a surprise awaits them as they struggle to return to the present.

To say this was low budget would be too kind. The stereotype acting is not stereotype enough. The stereotype actors are not stereotype enough. Let's face it; this whole stereotype project is not stereotype enough. If the budget was just a tad lower maybe this would never have been made.

Thanks to the 1967 low-budget film Journey to the Center of Time, I now know the secrets of time travel. I'm even willing to share them with you and spare you the burden of actually having to sit through this film. Now all of this is going to sound more expensive than it really is; if you follow the designs laid out in this movie, I think you're probably looking at less than a hundred bucks for the whole thing (except for the giant ruby power source - maybe you can steal one somewhere). You're going to need a "time vault" but that can be any room with an automatic door. Then you need a time lab to go inside the vault - this should be a circular room filled with all sorts of dials and gizmos that serve no purpose whatsoever; make sure some of them are housed behind cardboard-like control panels. You must paint the walls of the lab the ugliest burnt orange color you can find - that's important. Now take your big old ruby (no, I don't even want to know where you got it), put it inside a birdcage, and rest it on a stand in the middle of the lab. Buy a camera and put a TV screen on the wall somewhere (black and white, not color) - this is for the benefit of the folks in the "control room" (an even cheaper version of the time lab set); they, naturally, can see whatever your camera shows no matter how many millennia you travel in time away from them. Next, find some scientists; one should look a tad like Henry Kissinger if you want to do this right, but any young man and woman off the street will do for his assistants. Make sure they refer to the space-time continuum, stabilizers, and other fancy words like that all the time. You won't actually need a burly, antisocial misanthrope reluctantly funding the project, but if you have one handy go ahead and throw him in there with the scientists just to shake things up a little bit. There you go. Turn a few knobs, count down from ten, and enjoy your travels back and forth in time.

This old movie used to play at the drive-in and at 4 movie special showing at different theaters. These were fun movies to watch and for 35 to 75 cents for a showing...they were great.
What can i say....I still like this movie cause most
of the equipment they use is now antiques...and the characters
and the story are still very much watchable.

Please note that this review is just on the movie, K Pax, in this set.

K-Pax was one of the better movies of the year when it came out in 2001, and I found I liked it better than I was expecting. Spacey is excellent as usual, and Jeff Bridges as his therapist has a very sympathetic role and also does a great job. Interestingly, this time Bridges plays the earthman instead of the alien visitor, as he did in his 80s movie, Starman, an underrated Bridges flick that deserves to be better known. Spacey almost had me convinced that he really was from another planet, expecially after the great scene where he amazes confounds the assembled astronomers with his knowledge of the distant solar system.

The movie is somewhat schizoid because of the contrast between the first and second halves of the movie, but I really didn't mind that too much. The first half of the movie has a much lighter tone and is the most fun, as we learn about Prot, Spacey's otherworldly (literally) character from the planet K-PAX, and the relationship between Bridges, the psychiatrist, and Spacey, is developed.

But the movie takes on a distinctly dark and sinister tone in the second half, as Dr. Powell becomes convinced that Spacey could turn violent and sets out to discover the true nature of Spacey's past, which leads him to an abandoned farm in New Mexico.

My only complaint is that they could have found a better ending. By the end of the movie, you've come to like and sympathize with the unworldly, eccentric but likable Prot character, but then he basically turns into a vegetable at the end of the film and the movie falls flat. But except for that, overall I enjoyed the movie. Big Bubba says go see it and don't Bogart the popcorn.
