Serenity offers perfect proof that Firefly deserved a better fate than premature TV cancellation. Joss Whedon's acclaimed sci-fi Western hybrid series was ideally suited (in Browncoats, of course) for a big-screen conversion, and this action-packed adventure allows Whedon to fill in the Firefly backstory, especially the history and mystery of the spaceship Serenity's volatile and traumatized stowaway, River Tam (Summer Glau). Her lethal skills as a programmed "weapon" makes her a coveted prize for the power-hungry planetary Alliance, represented here by an Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who'll stop at nothing to retrieve River from Serenity's protective crew. We still get all the quip-filled dialogue and ass-kicking action that we've come to expect from the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but Whedon goes a talented step further here, blessing his established ensemble cast with a more fully-developed dynamic of endearing relationships. Serenity's cast is led with well-balanced depth and humor by Nathan Fillion as Captain Mal Reynolds, whose maverick spirit is matched by his devotion to crewmates Wash (Alan Tudyk), Zoe (Gina Torres), fun-loving fighter Jayne (Adam Baldwin), engineer Kaylee (Jewel Staite), doctor Simon (Sean Maher), and Mal's former flame Inara (Morena Baccarin), who plays a pivotal role in Whedon's briskly-paced plot. As many critics agreed, Serenity offered all the fun and breezy excitement that was missing from George Lucas's latter-day Star Wars epics, and Whedon leaves an opening for a continuing franchise that never feels cheap or commercially opportunistic. With the mega-corporate mysteries of Blue Sun yet to be explored, it's a safe bet we haven't seen the last of the good ship Serenity. --Jeff Shannon
Description
A passenger with a deadly secret. Six rebels on the run. An assassin in pursuit. When the renegade crew of Serenity agrees to hide a fugitive on their ship, they find themselves in an action-packed battle between the relentless military might of a totalitarian regime who will destroy anything - or anyone - to get the girl back and the bloodthirsty creatures who roam the uncharted areas of space. But, the greatest danger of all may be on their ship. From the mind of Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) comes a new edge-of-your-seat adventure loaded with explosive battles, gripping special effects and fantastic new worlds.

Phenominal.......2007-07-04
This is a MUST have for anyone who is a FAN of the one season show Firefly. If you have seen this movie and wondered if there was more too it, then go buy firefly right away and you will fall in love with the characters as did I.
MORE GIVE ME MORE!.......2007-07-03
It's unfortunate that the series was as short lived as it was. This movie wether familiar with the series or not was a spectacular end to what could have been an even better story. I hope they inted to do a seqeul in the coming years!
A Pretty Good Film.......2007-07-03
This is a pretty good story with pretty good acting. Not great by any means and not as good as an average episode of Battlestar Galactica or Star Trek Deep Space Nine. Shows you how far down the Sci Fi movie franchise has fallen that some people think of this as a classic. Not a waste of money but it wouldn't hurt to wait to see it on cable either.
The Best Sci-Fi movie you've never seen!.......2007-06-28
The thing that many people do not understand is that YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A FAN OF THE SHOW TO LOVE THIS MOVIE. This has everything you wish Lucas had provided in the prequels: great acting, kicking action, moving characters, and a great plot. The feel is gritty but with great heart. He has a message but will not preach to you. Surprises, love and a message about humanity make it complete. If you ever wished you could find a Sci-Fi movie on the big screen that you could love, do yourself a favor and give this movie a try. You will not go away unmoved.

Tom Selleck plays Matthew Quigley, the cowboy hero in this traditional Western, set very untraditionally in Australia. After some macho silliness in the opening minutes, the story settles into a surprisingly evocative tale of Quigley, a sharpshooter who had come to the country to work for a land baron (Alan Rickman) and who is on the mend after a brutal attack. In the company of a woman (Laura San Giacomo) abused by that same baron, Quigley gets his strength and his shooting skills back while healing in the midst of aboriginal people as well as some stunning Australian settings. Director Simon Wincer (Phar Lap) brings a lot of integrity to this rare horse opera from contemporary Hollywood. --Tom Keogh

Not the correct region for DVD players.......2007-07-03
DVD arrived promptly and in good order, however, due to Australia being in the Oceania region our DVD players cannot play US type DVDs. Amazon did warn me that this was a possibility - however, no option was given by Amazon to choose a DVD for this region - Oceania. I am stuck with a DVD I cannot watch
Two of My Favorite Stars.......2007-05-07
Classic Western in a new setting. The stoic cowboy and the damsel in distress Down Under. It is always a good evening when watching the interactions of the cowboy and the 'crazy lady'.
From the beginning when he rescues her and she 'latches onto him' as her protector, right to the end when she.... Well... that would be telling.
It has all the right mixtures, The Good Guy, The Surprisingly Tough Damsel, and The Overstated Evil Cattle Baron, all in the wilds of old Australia. Good Stuff!
I never thought this movie could be a Western was I Wrong this is a Western in a Far off Land........2007-03-11
Man I love it when the bad guys get it in the end, and they do in this movie. Tom Selleck plays a Great Hero in this movie. If you can handle some Brutal seens ,Blood and Shot'em up swearing, but in the content of this movie its done to bring its point across and does that.Hey Who Watchs Westerns in Todays World? I-still-do.Dont forget Open Range too!
Tom Selleck.......2007-02-12
A different kind of western! The story line is good and Tom Selleck his usual great self!
Quigley ... not a bad movie.......2007-02-06
It was sort of a Revisionist Western. It was set in the Colonial period of Australia . The best things were
* the cinematography of Australia's glorious landscape. Most of it shot around Alice Springs where I lived the a while.
* adequate performances from the 3 main characters ..Tom Selleck, Laura San Giacomo currently seen as Maya Gallo in TV show "Just Shoot Me", and Alan Rickman .... and it has dingo's too
"Quigley" is a reasonable action movie which revealed the truth of our shameful past.

This disappointment from Jim Jarmusch stars Johnny Depp in a mystery-Western about a 19th-century accountant named William Blake, who spends nearly all his money getting to a hellish mud town in the old West and ends up penniless and doomstruck in the wilderness. A benevolent if goofy Native American (Gary Farmer) takes an interest in guiding Blake on a quest for identity in his earthly journey, but the film is really just a string of endless shtick about inbred woodsmen, dumb lawmen, and a trio of irritable killers. With Robert Mitchum, Iggy Pop, Gabriel Byrne, Alfred Molina, and a noodling soundtrack by Neil Young. --Tom Keogh
Description
Johnny Depp (CHOCOLAT) delivers a remarkable performance in this highly acclaimed tale of adventure and intrigue in the wild, wild west! A young man in search of a fresh start, William Blake (Depp) embarks on an exciting journey to a new town ... never realizing the danger that lies ahead. But when a heated love triangle ends in double murder, Blake finds himself a wanted man, running scared -- until a mysterious loner teaches him to face the dangers that follow a "dead man." With an outstanding supporting cast including Gabriel Byrne (THE USUAL SUSPECTS) and Robert Mitchum (CAPE FEAR), and a sizzling soundtrack, DEAD MAN is another motion picture triumph from filmmaker Jim Jarmusch.
Customer Reviews:
Totally Awesome!.......2007-06-19
If you are a real free thinker than this movie is for you. If you need to have everything scripted and compartmentalized than this movie is not for you. The story line and soundtrack are a perfect marriage. Watch this movie when you are not distracted and can concentrate on the subtle dialogue ... Some pretty cool stuff here. Great characters. This film plays itself out like a hazy dream. Not everybody's cup of team, but it sure is mine. I can't think of another film that approaches this dream state.
Dead Man.......2007-06-11
Johnny Depp. I have never been disappointed by Johnny Depp on the screen. Not an action packed thriller, but if you don't "PAUSE" before leaving the room and don't rewind you'll miss something.
One Of My Favorites.......2007-05-16
I also think that Amazon should be ashamed of allowing their reviewer to give such a negative review. I can see if the guy had given an abundance of details to support the reasons why he hated the film so much, but to rattle off a couple of generalities about "Dead Man" is atrocious of him.
I loved "Dead Man." I just saw "Pirates of the Carribean 2," and I'm glad that great actors like Johnny Depp are allowed to flex their creative muscle in real roles instead of cookie-cutter Hollywood roles. I do admit to anyone interested in viewing "Dead Man" that so far, the majority of people I attempted to introudce the film to did not like it. This movie is made for a very particular audience, and I'm not sure if even the director can pin-point exactly who this audience is.
I loved everything about this movie, even the black & white, and I normally hate black & white movies. But "Dead Man" in color would have killed so much of the effect. I loved the characters, like Nobody, and the ruthless bounty hunters. Johnny Depp plays one of the most tragic individuals introduced to audiences in a long time.
This movie could not have been better. I consider it to be a masterpiece of art.
Not a single extraneous shot.......2007-05-06
I just finished watching this movie again and was really surprised to see the negative review given by Tom Keogh of Amazon (whoever he is). If Tom can only describe the superficial events of the story without recognizing the broader themes, then he is really missing out. I am always amazed at how much storytelling punch Jim Jarmusch manages to pack into so few scenes- minimalism at its best. He encapsulates the human experience in just a few short strokes- the innocence of the young as they make their way out into the world, taking the first long journey alone, seeing new & strange lands/people, encountering the decadence of the city, treachery in big business, enduring ridicule, sharing fragile dreams with another and seeing those dreams slip away. In the end, William Blake is transformed from innocence to maturity and understands the necessity and tragedy of it. Chances are pretty good that Tom Keogh did not understand that the dead baby deer was a symbol of William Blake's lost innocence; much less some of the other metaphors presented here. A great, great movie.
my FAVORITE MOVIE!.......2007-05-03
What else can I say. I loved it start to finnish.

It's a vampire movie.......2007-06-12
I really liked the first Underworld, so I expected a lot from this one; I wasn't disappointed. The movie picked up right from where the first one ended, and moved at a quick pace through each scene with nary slow parts. They achieved this very well because the story was expounded and progressed easily along with the action sequences. This is a vampire movie, so everything is dark, and they've filtered the colors with a blue tint, and this created an eerily beautiful effect. The character development is very thin, of course most of that was taken care of in the first film. This one was did seem very linear and predictable, relying on spectacular effects and action to carry the weight of the film. But, like I said, this doesn't really mean a lot because the first movie covered everything important. Remember in the 80s where every movie had a bunch of small battles culminating in one scene where the protagonist faced off with the "big boss"? Evolution was like an extended big boss scene, only with more revelation and a bigger boss. The ending did leave room for a sequel, but also concludes everything so if they made a sequel they would have to write a new story unrelated except featuring Kate and Scott's characters. I really enjoyed this movie. If you liked the first one, this one is a no-brainer.
King of all Vampire and Werewolf Movies.......2007-04-11
It just doesnt get any better then this. If you like this genre of movie you cant miss this sequel. Amazing quality.
Nice release, crisp and clean.......2007-03-23
This is a very dark movie so I was very impressed how crisp and clean this blu-ray disk turned out. So clean the wolves looked even more fake than I remember at the theater. Very impressive audio as well. Not much colors as the movie had a blueish tint throughout. Now I can only hope they will give the 1st movie the same treatment as that is the MUCH BETTER of the two.
Stunning transfer...blah movie.......2007-02-12
I really liked the first Underworld and was looking forward to this movie (though I never got to see it in the theater); unfortunately this sequal was vastly inferior to the original. After watching the movie for a while I looked at the timer and saw that 36 minutes had passed and absolutely no plot advancement had occurred and through the whole rest of the movie it seemed that there was more time-filler action than actual plot. It's almost as if someone wrote a treatment for a movie and that Evolution was shot off of that rather than a script.
With all of that said Kate Beckinsale looks fantastic (as always) and there are some fantastic special effects/cool fight scenes in the movie that make it worth watching.
On the Blu-ray side the transfer is amazing; this ranks up with the very best video and audio I have seen/heard on the format. If only the storyline could have matched the absolutely amazing picture.
2 1/2 Stars for the actual movie and 5+ stars for the blu-ray.
Terrific Blu-ray Title.......2007-01-29
Shows the best of Blu-ray. Very fine detail, awesome sound. Sucks to be a HD-DVD fanboy, because you don't get this title (like so many other titles). I watched it on my Sony 1080p HDTV and was blown away by the clarity the HDMI cable offers with Blu-ray. I've never been a tech geek, but am proud to say I am turing into one thanks to this new form of entertainment. Blu-ray rocks!!

Based on a series of fantasy novels by Hideyuki Kikuchi, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is a bloody anime adventure. Set in the distant future, the story focuses on D (voice by Andrew Philpot), the son of a vampire and a mortal who has dedicated his life to exterminating vampires. D is pursuing Charlotte (Wendee Lee), who has been carried off by vampire Meier Link (John Rafter Lee). The bounty-hunting Markus brothers and tough-talking Leila (Pamela Segall) are also on the trail. A long, violent chase brings them to the Castle of Carmila the Bloody Countess (Julia Fletcher), where the narrative founders in a series of confusing illusions that lead to an inconclusive ending. Bloodlust looks better in still images that evoke Yoshitaka Amano's intricate illustrations than it does in motion. The very limited drawn animation clashes visually with the more fluid computer-generated imagery--D's cape billows dramatically, but his expression rarely changes. Fans of such violent anime features as Sword for Truth and Ninja Resurrection will enjoy the no-holds-barred action sequences, but more squeamish viewers will be put off by the beheadings, impalements, disembowelments, etc. Vampire Hunter D, an earlier, more modest feature based on the same material, is a better adaptation. --Charles Solomon

Boring and childish.......2007-05-14
I bought this dvd because people are raving how good it is,IT IS NOT, this Animated cartoon first starts off as maybe something good but it ends very fast to a childish transformer like cartoon with goofy cartoon characters of the future with antics like the Kimba cartoons or childish Saturday cartoons your kids would watch but you will dread, this is pure kids stuff only I hope to sell my copy soon on ebay.
Fantastic.......2007-05-13
If you are into anime and vampires than Bloodlust is a MUST HAVE. This is something you will want to watch over and over again. This is a movie you don't want to end.
*slight spoiler warning*
Unlike in other vampire movies, this one has a twist. The vampire that steals the girl actually loves her.
****
The action, the passion, the comedy. It is all there; Bloodlust has the whole package. You will not be disapointed.
If I had to criticise the movie it would be that there is no part two or that it is not twice as long. Seriously, this movie is that good.
I'll be buying another since I lost the last one I had.
A Dark Adventure Unfolds.......2007-04-28
This anime movie is really exciting with a very vivid plot and a dark sort of twist to the story. It is defiantly a dark romance. I have to say that the animation in the film is exceptionally well done and the scenery is absolutely haunting. It has a very gothic feel to it. The vampire hunter known only as 'D' is technically half-human and half-vampire. When a wealthy woman gets abducted by a vampire, D has to go try to bring her back alive without having been transformed into a vampire, of course dead if she has become one. The story is mainly about his journey to find the missing girl. But the one question is, did the girl go willingly with the vampire?
Passing Along Gift Recipients Comments.......2007-03-19
I gave this movie as a gift and the recipient, a big fan of Vampires but not always Anime really loved it. He couldn't say enough good things about it. So ... if you're into the vampire genre and want to add to the bredth of your Vamp collection ... this sounds like a worth while addition.
The most beautiful animation I have ever seen.......2007-03-13
This anime is one of my favourites. For starters, the animation is unbelievable, so many details, it looks it took forever to animate. And then there's the plot, original, interesting and constantly flowing, just what you'd expect a sci-fi/fantasy anime to be.
Two thumbs up!

Purgatory is a down-and-dirty Western with a twist The Twilight Zone's Rod Serling would have loved. A band of 19th-century desperadoes, led by the monstrous Blackjack Britton (Eric Roberts), takes a wrong turn while fleeing a posse and rides into an otherworldly, off-the-map town called Refuge. Sedate, almost repressed, and guarded by an unarmed sheriff (Sam Shepard), Refuge is a weird haven of hospitality with no jail, a literate shopkeeper (J.D. Souther), an erudite dandy of a doctor (Randy Quaid), a restless deputy (Donnie Wahlberg), and a beautiful young woman (Amelia Heinle) with no apparent family. In short order, Blackjack figures Refuge is his for the plundering. But the youngest of his gang, the innocent Sonny (Brad Rowe), slowly realizes the town's residents are, in fact, dead legends of the American West--Wild Bill Hickok (Shepard), Doc Holliday (Quaid), Jesse James (Souther), among others--spending a violence-free interim before being taken to Heaven (or Hell if they fail). A purely fun if slightly hokey piece of fanciful adventure, Purgatory's colorful cast plays the whole thing straight and gives this made-for-cable film (directed by Uli Edel of Last Exit to Brooklyn) some exciting, six-gun grit and emotional authenticity. --Tom Keogh
Description
Between somewhere and nowhere in the untamed West is the small town of Refuge. There, neither the sheriff nor his deputy carry a sidearm. There's no jail either, because shooting, carousing and bad blood are not in the town's character. What peaceful folks live there? Wild Bill Hickok. Doc Holliday. Jesse James. Billy the Kid. All long dead. All mysteriously given a chance to undo their violent pasts in Purgatory. All put to a stern test when Blackjack and his ornery gang ride into town.

All the elements of a great movie.......2007-05-10
I must admit that I was pleasently surprised at the quailty of this movie, which features all the elements that make up a great movie. Starting with an interesting story line, great acting and action sequences, and a number of special moments wonderfully esentuated with moving music.
A good movie for TV.......2007-05-07
It would be hard for me to give this movie more than a three, since it is in the movie category and thus is competing with truly classic westerns such as, The Good the Bad and the Ugly. That being said, it is a good movie when you consider that it was made for TV. An entertaining western which has some great actors and an amusing plot. If I was to compare it to other TV movies, only, then I would say that it rated a strong 4.
Reviewing the movie, " Purgatory.".......2007-03-23
Interesting movie with a bit of Romance.., of course, as in most westerns, the heroes. Wild Bill Hickock, Doc Holiday, Jesse James, and of course, Billy the Kid. And of course the villian, Black Jack...
Very good movie. I've watched it several times already.
Thanks!
more then a western.......2007-03-14
this movie more then your average, shootem up western!really, this is a tale of redemption .well written, acted, and directed...I got flick as gift for my wife[she rated it 5 stars!]
A Fantastic Fantasy Western.......2007-01-10
Often when genres combine in unexpected ways the result is less than stellar, but this is not the case with Purgatory. Combining all the drama and bravado of your typical western with a supernatural spin, Purgatory brings together many of the wild west's greatest heroes for one last hurrah. A beautifully imagined and produced piece of cinema highly reminicent of Deadlands: The Weird West, Purgatory is definately worth the price and should be added to any collection.

El Topo's surrealism is more slapstick than Jodorwosky's brilliant follow-up, Holy Mountain, making it more akin to a spaghetti western than a psychedelic journey through the subconscious. The director stars as the gunfighter, El Topo (The Mole), who first gives his 7-year old son (played by real life son, Brontis Jodorowsky) a glimpse of manhood in the form of weaponry, then abandons him for a horseback revenge trip focused on a heartless team of raping, pillaging bandits. Along the way, he meets Mara (Mara Lorenzio), whose tough love encourages him to become a monk. On El Topo's new quest, he encounters spiritual leaders and endures a series of personal realizations about his past violence. Absurd moments, such as when the viewer first encounters the bandits sniffing and drooling over high-heeled women's shoes out in the desert, make El Topo satirically wry. Brutal scenes in which rivers of blood run through towns, or people slaughter each other in firing lines, remind the viewer of Mexico's bloody history. The mixture of ironic humor and violence in El Topo encapsulates Jodorowky's vision of a world in which reality and the imagination are fused, yet completely separate. This paradox, of great thematic concern in all of Jodorowsky's films, is most resonant in El Topo when Mara and The Mole sadistically communicate with whips, guns, and knives. As Holy Mountain's religious message centers wholly around The Alchemist's transformation of Jesus, El Topo introduces love between man and woman into the symbolic mix, compensating for the divine settings and imaginative characters that elucidate the protagonist's enlightenment in the later Holy Mountain. Only by viewing the two films as a double feature will one get the full power of Jodorowsky's Buddhist message, one of self-sacrifice and suffering towards a greater end. --Trinie Dalton

Complex Mexican Religious Allegory.......2007-06-29
***This Review May Contain Spoilers***
El Topo is the classic Mexican film hailed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono enough that it was shown at midnight in many cinemas for years. It is often credited as starting the midnight movie countercultural that helped bring attention to, and build cult film audiences for movies like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and David Lynch's Eraserhead. In that respect it is far from a mainstream film but it got enough attention that it is celebrated even today. I feel that this is with good reason, as El Topo is one of best films ever made. Alejandro Jodorowsky directs and stars as the title character.
El Topo begins with its eponymous character in the desert with his son. He tells the boy to bury a picture of his mother and his toy in the sand as now it is time for him to become a man. The boy is vulnerable but El Topo leads him by example while protecting him in their various interactions with others. The film understands the western genre and the machismo that often accompanies it. El Topo is one bad cowboy who can guarantee protection for anyone he cares about. So it really sucks when he soon leaves his son behind with a bunch of monks after emasculating some evil banditos. He leaves with a girl he saved and he names her Mara. Mara loves El Topo for being the alpha male that he is, so she convinces him to kill the four best gunslingers so he can be baddest cowboy of them all. He manages to defeat them in various significant ways. These scenes are rich in biblical and other religious references and operate allegorically to show that being a bad cowboy isn't really all it's cracked up to be. Nevertheless, for better or worse, El Topo kills all four of them and begins to learn four specific lessons along the way. He begins to feel guilty and while he is caught off guard during the beginning stages of his enlightenment, he is defeated by the unknown woman who followed El Topo and Mara during their journey. Viewing El Topo as vulnerable, Mara betrays him and leaves with this unknown woman gunslinger. El Topo's battered and shot up body is taken away to a cave by a multitude of unseemly characters.
Macrocosmically, the journey for El Topo overall suggests that his travels represent the rise and trials of Judeo-Christian theologies, with the son representing new Judeo-Christianity and El Topo representing the old philosphies. The second half of the film seems to comment on more contemporary dealings and even anticipates what will happen in the future. How will El Topo's son grow? How will he react to the father who abandoned him but who has himself grown? How will the dominant faith evolve? How will it maintain its truth and purity with humanity at the wheel?
In the literal sense, the second half of El Topo forwards to a few years later after he is brought to a cave by this band of deformed pariahs. When he wakes up we soon realize that El Topo is a different man. He shaves off his beard and head and dresses as a monk. He makes a plan to free these people from their cave so they can join the community outside. He plans to fund the building of a tunnel to free these people. He does this by going to the town with his dwarven girlfriend to entertain them with comedy and dancing, among other small jobs. The town itself is by no means a utopia as it is wrought with slavery and violence. A new priest at the church in town is revealed to be El Topo's own son who he abandoned years earlier. El Topo's son plans to kill him but he decides not to do so until the tunnel is complete. The tunnel gets finished and El Topo's son decides not to kill him. Meanwhile, the deformed people are free and as they head to the town the villagers there begin to shoot and kill all of them, to El Topo's dismay. El Topo unleashes his vengeance on the villagers, killing them all and in the process freeing their slaves. El Topo then lights himself on fire, which was a timely parallel to the Buddhist monks who did the same in protest of the Vietnam War. During his death, El Topo's new son is born to his dwarven girlfriend. If the Buddhist references are consistent then this would suggest that El Topo is reincarnated as his own son and religious truth will continue to surface again.
I think it is important to note that the content in El Topo could be perceived as both perplexing and offensive to many movie-goers. Alejandro Jodorowsky kills real animals, uses real deformed and dwarfed people, and liberally applies nudity and violence throughout. It doesn't offend me at all but I knew my wife wouldn't like it and I understand why, so I mention it here just in case.
El Topo is a complex story with many odd details as well as many religious references and metaphors that comment on a larger scale as I noted earlier. I've seen it many times and in my first few viewings I didn't understand it and thought it was entertaining but pretentious. It is not pretentious. Microcosmically, El Topo is a film about a human being finding himself, and finding out all alone what it means to be alive. It is about independently becoming a good man as a good man is defined in the eyes of Alejandro Jodorowsky. It is obviously a deeply personal film for its director and it may not touch on elements personal to everyone in its audience, but it definitely did for me. Jodorowsky invokes religious references as a vehicle to express his own torments and challenges and how the enlightment experience for El Topo is merely mirroring his own experiences. It's commentary addresses oceans of issues in many layers. Conjuring up the imagination to produce this web of ideas so alive is indeed an ambitious undertaking. I find El Topo to be profoundly inspiring in a way that few films are. Its significance alone should at least justify one viewing for you and I hope you get the same satisfaction that I did. Perhaps you will like it enough to enjoy El Topo again and again.
Cool looking movies.......2007-06-15
These movies are cool. If oyu have like 50 bucks that you wouldnt mind parting with, spend it on this collection. You wont regret it as long as you like movies that dont necessarily make sense, but look pretty amazing.
save your money.......2007-06-13
........not woth the dough in my opinion............a few sequences of interesting imagery consting of about 15 minutes total time.......all art is open to interpretation but this slab of filmmaking did not do it for me....could not connect with any of the characters and the plot/non plot did not lead me in but a few interesting areas.
El Topo changed my mind.......2007-06-12
Through weird circumstances, I saw El Topo 3 times when I was 13 years old.
THIS IS NOT A FILM FOR 13 YEAR OLDS!. Unless you want to introduce them to
a way of thinking that is incredibly expansive, confusing(in a good way)
and ripe. It's violent, it's disturbing, it's mind blowing (and I don't
use that phrase easily). I am convinced that seeing it just when I was
starting to be a teenager, changed the way I think.
The director, Alejandro Jodorowsky said in an interview, that this film is like taking
acid, someone can give you the tab, but they can't give you the trip. Over
the years, I would see El Topo whenever it came to a revival house and
always I would get more out of it. I could never really say I understood
it better, but it would always set the gears running.
This is not to say that there is no story to follow. Ostensibly it's the story of a gun
slinger who wants to challenge the great master gunslingers to see if he is
the best. That's the first 1/2. The second 1/2 is almost like a different
film except it reflects a complete spiritual rebirth of the gunslinger. I
remember reading something that said the film was divided into Old
Testament and New Testament.
If you want to think, be surprised and fascinated, be disgusted and
delighted, be challenged and changed, see this film. It's definitely a film
worth owning because you will want to see it several times.
Jodorowsky has gone on to being a bit of a leader of a philosophical group
in Paris as well as one of the most respected writers of French Comics-
which is an entirely different, and in some ways more respected genre than
in the States
Faded Glory.......2007-06-11
When first viewed in the early 70's it left me speechless (El Topo). Viewing that film & the others now, reminded me of the Italian directors of that era. Still it is a great set to view with mental patients.

Welcome to Delos, the high-tech Disneyland for adults that Michael Crichton created for Westworld, a nifty science fiction thriller from 1973 that also marked the popular novelist's feature-film directorial debut. The movie is so named because the vacationing buddies who travel to Delos (James Brolin, Richard Benjamin) choose Westworld as their destination (the other choices being Roman World and Medieval World), where they are free to indulge their movie-inspired fantasies of the Wild West. From brothel beauties to black-hatted gunslingers (like the villain played by Yul Brynner), the place is populated by perfectly humanlike robots programmed and monitored to cater to every guest's fancy. But fun turns into abject horror when the robots--particularly Brynner's badman--begin to malfunction and Delos turns into an amusement park that's anything but amusing. Westworld has moments of camp and the look of a low-budget backlot production, but two decades before Crichton revamped his idea to create Jurassic Park, this movie made the most of its interesting and exciting premise. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Where nothing can possibly go wrong, ..go wrong.. go wrong.......2007-07-04
I believe given the limits of special Fx at the time it was made, this was a good film with an intriguing premise. I doubt we will see any remake of it for the simple fact that we dont have any actor who could convincingly play the iconic gunslinger brought to life by Brynner.
I had not seen the movie in years. I was mistaken in thinking that Delos was set up to be a vacation fantasy land set up for the super rich and powerful. We're told early on that the guests pay about $1,000 per day for their time in Westworld and the two main characters are obviously well off (One is recently divorced, the other's marital status unclear)
The first reviewer gave a well beyond adequate explanation of the difficulties of animatronic robot technology. I wont steal his thunder here. I think if a remake were to be done I'd have many changes.
Upon arrival at Delos-- but prior to changing clothes and getting into character/role playing mode-- guests would get to see a robot assembly and design area. Seeing technicians go from a steel framed skeleton with movable, programmable limbs and digits all the way to a semi-convincing character (cowboy, saloon hooker, medieval knight etc) would be neat. The guests would get the same type guided tour as the Attenborough character gave the guests at Jurassic Park, only at the end I'd have the guests discover that their tourguide narrator was in fact a robot as well. So far the only convincing robots actually in existence are in japan. (I saw the "girl" and she looked convincing at least from a distance)
Instead of the one deranged cowboy gunman, I think I might have multiple character robots go nuts, but I'd have them ea confined to a particular zone where they would receive programming signals from miniature cell antennas or something similar. That the gunslinger could go all the way to the Roman World seemed a bit far-fetched; seems like you'd engineer him so that he'd only go so far until his tower reception quit.
It might have also been better if robotic machines had been the repairers of the "killed" machines, that could have been the origin of the virus.
I'm a little incredulous that synthetic beings could ever be designed and built with which a man might choose to have sex. I think I would rework the saloon girl hookers part of the film as well.
difficult to believe.......2007-06-13
When you are programming a robot or a computer of some type, you must think of all the possibilities. For instance, think of the navigation control computer in an airplane or aeroplane. If something goes wrong, then the program must be able to continue without rebooting or shutting down. Today you should use Ada, but in a pinch you can also use c or jave.
This movie is really hard to believe. I think it is a really bad case of imcompetent programming when robots get out of control. They have to remake this movie so that it is more believeable and less, well you have to see it to believe it.
They have to change the story where the robots reprogram themselfs. Then it would be more believeable. Otherwise, it looks like the guy who wrote this has brain damage from mercury or fluoride poisoning. Don't swallow the toothpaste with fluoride because they use fluoride in insecticides!
Yul like it.......2007-04-14
and may want to brynner copy of its sequel too.
Futureworld
"... Draw ... "; Yul Brynner, WESTWORD........2007-04-13
Despite the fact that the production values in WESTWORLD tend to lean towards the low end of the spectrum (they look more like an original STAR TREK or SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN television episode instead of a motion picture) the movie is still a fun little sci-fi thriller flick. Brynner's depiction of the cybernetic cowboy - menacing, emotionless and cold - was superb and easily comprised THE BEST parts of the film hands down. I loved one of the final scenes of the cyborg where it stared into the camera with it's smoldering, hollow face - cool! WESTWORLD was Michael Crichton's directorial debut, and though the robotic-woman bed scene was unnecessary and tasteless, the picture, for the most part, was handled very well. If Yul Brynner were still around, I'd love to see an extended remake with Brynner reprising his role. Unfortunately that will never be possible.
A must-have SF-Horror film!!!.......2007-04-10
A great movie all round. For any horror &/or SF fan, this is a must-have. This release is in the modern-style cardboard DVD-box, instead of a proper plastic one, but other than that I have no criticisms. I am very happy with my purchase.

if you are even a tiny fan of Tony Randall, this is it!!!.......2007-06-06
Tony Randall is this movie -- sweet, clean fun -- good for the whole family, a real lovely moral tale with the Master (Tony Randall) giving 7 different roles a most delightful spin. Enjoy!
Very satisfied.......2007-05-15
Easy to order, product delivered within a few days and I could take advantage of the free shipping offer. Top qulity DVD of one of my favorite old movies.
Randall is great!.......2007-05-14
I had seen this many times when my kids were young, and we loved it. Sure, it's corny and over the top sometimes, but it's thoroughly entertaining. Having read the book, I find they did a good job of conveying its flavor. A classic!
Strange, but a true original!.......2007-05-08
This is an unusual movie that teaches lessons in a manner unaccustomed to. It address' both basic human strengths and weakness, as well as American culture. It is movie that causes one to think about the state of humanity and the plank in their own eye. Excellent! And the whole family can enjoy it as entertainment as well.
Illusions of life.......2007-03-28
A magician who let the people of a town have a look in their heart and holds them a mirror, if the heart is vain and empty or jast deeply hurt through diaapointments.
