You don't have to be a Star Trek fan to enjoy Galaxy Quest, but it certainly helps. A knowingly affectionate tribute to Trek and any other science fiction TV series of the 1960s and beyond, this crowd-pleasing comedy offers in-jokes at warp speed, hitting the bull's-eye for anyone who knows that (1) the starship captain always removes his shirt to display his manly physique; (2) any crew member not in the regular cast is dead meat; and (3) the heroes always stop the doomsday clock with one second to spare. So it is with Commander Taggart (Tim Allen) and the stalwart crew of the NSEA Protector, whose intergalactic exploits on TV have now been reduced to a dreary cycle of fan conventions and promotional appearances. That's when the Thermians arrive, begging to be saved from Sarris, the reptilian villain who threatens to destroy their home planet.
Can actors rise to the challenge and play their roles for real? The Thermians are counting on it, having studied the "historical documents" of the Galaxy Quest TV show, and their hero worship (not to mention their taste for Monte Cristo sandwiches) is ultimately proven worthy, with the help of some Galaxy geeks on planet Earth. And while Galaxy Quest serves up great special effects and impressive Stan Winston creatures, director Dean Parisot (Home Fries) is never condescending, lending warm acceptance to this gentle send-up of sci-fi TV and the phenomenon of fandom. Best of all is the splendid cast, including Sigourney Weaver as buxom blonde Gwen DeMarco; Alan Rickman as frustrated thespian Alexander Dane; Tony Shalhoub as dimwit Fred Kwan; Daryl Mitchell as former child-star Tommy Webber; and Enrico Colantoni as Thermian leader Mathesar, whose sing-song voice is a comedic coup de grâce. --Jeff Shannon

Loved It........2007-05-24
This was just plain outright funny. Pokes fun at the Trekkies out there. Tim Allen is super as is Sigourny Weaver. Two thumbs up.
Excellent Star Trek Spoof.......2007-05-16
Tim Allen mocking Captain Kirk, Sigourney Weaver repeating everything the ship's computer says, classic. Bored, bitter and alcoholic from touring the conventions, the washed up has beens are suddenly beamed onto a ship modeled on their TV series and expected to defeat a formidable foe. The problem is -- even though their hosts expect them to know how to do everything (after all, they did on the show) -- they initially can't even perform basic tasks. This is a silly movie, but if you liked Star Trek and can handle some silliness, this is among the best you can get.
Good for a Laugh.......2007-05-13
Personally, I think this movie is pretty cheesy, and it isn't one of my favorites. My husband, however, thinks it is a riot. He loves it. He laughs out loud every time he watches it. For me, it is worth watching it just to see my husband's reaction.
We both like the characters and how it plays off of Star Trek. I think the acting is good.
A geek's treasure........2007-04-16
Excellent and funny movie that pokes fun at "Star Trek". If you like sci-fi and funny movies you will like this one.
Hilarious parody of "Star Trek" et al........2007-04-08
The humor in this movie works on two levels. First is the comedy that results from the movie's basic premise: a bunch of TV actors suddenly find themselves in exactly the same sorts of adventures they used to act out on screen, only now it's real. But second, and even funnier in my opinion, is the humor derived from parodying the entire world of science fiction, and its all to often rabid, religiously devoted fans.
It also showcases the darker side of being involved with a pop-culture phenomenon: actors who become so closely identified with their roles, they find they simply can't get work doing anything else. I imagine the real cast of "Star Trek" could feel how close to the mark this hits (and George Reeves, TV's Superman of the 1950s, may have even killed himself in despair at suffering this fate). The most memorable scene in the movie for me was Alan Rickman's delivery of the line "By Grabthar's Hammer, I've never seen such savings." His rigid posture, hesitant speech, and stony facial expression are hilarious. He's a classicly trained actor who's become pigeonholed in a role he considers beneath him, and he has been reduced to the humiliation of uttering childish drivel at store openings. For all that much of the movie is made in the spirit of William Shatner's famous SNL "get a life" skit, the movie takes an affectionate look at fans, and two sci-fi geeks even provide indispensible help to the heroes in the end.

Star Trek fans were decidedly mixed in their reactions to this, the ninth big-screen feature in Paramount's lucrative Trek franchise, but die-hard loyalists will appreciate the way this Next Generation adventure rekindles the spirit of the original Trek TV series while combining a tolerable dose of New-Agey philosophy with a light-hearted plot for the NextGen cast. This time out, Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his executive crew must transport to a Shangri-la-like planet to see why their android crewmate Data (Brent Spiner) has run amuck in a village full of peaceful Ba'ku artisans who--thanks to their planet's "metaphasic radiation"--haven't aged in 309 years.
It turns out there's a conspiracy afoot, masterminded by the devious, gruesomely aged Ru'afo (F. Murray Abraham, hamming it up under makeup resembling a cosmetic surgeon's worst nightmare), who's in cahoots with a renegade Starfleet admiral (Anthony Zerbe). They covet the fountain-of-youth power of the Ba'ku planet, but because their takeover plan violates Starfleet's Prime Directive of noninterference, it's up to Picard & crew to stop the scheme. Along the way, they all benefit from the metaphasic effect, which manifests itself as Worf's puberty (visible as a conspicuous case of Klingon acne), Picard's youthful romance with a Ba'ku woman (the lovely Donna Murphy), the touching though temporary return of Geordi's natural eyesight, and a moment when Troi asks Dr. Crusher if she's noticed that her "boobs are firming up."
Some fans scoffed at these humorous asides, but they're what make this Trek film as entertaining as it is slightly disappointing. Without the laughs (including Data's rousing excerpt from Gilbert & Sullivan's HMS Pinafore), this is a pretty routine entry in the franchise, with no real surprises, a number of plot holes, and the overall appearance of a big-budget TV episode. As costar and director, Jonathan Frakes proves a capable carrier of the Star Trek flame--and it's nice to see women in their forties portrayed as smart and sexy--but while this is surely an adequate Trek adventure, it doesn't quite rank with the best in the series. --Jeff Shannon

2 hour episdoe.......2007-06-12
Out of all the TNG movies this one was probaly like just a long version of the show. It was such a very simple concept. A movie based on the violation of the prime directive. It had moral dilemanas that had to be addressed and it reminded me so much of the show. If you are a fan of the show you will love this movie.
The only downside is it's not going to wow you with the fights or space battles. It's a solid movie but, if you aren't a trek fan this isn't the one that will convernt you like say Nemesis with the big battles there would. Still I definately recommemend this film.
Not bad...for Star Trek.......2007-05-09
I forgot that I actually enjoyed this movie. Of all of the Star Trek films, this is the one that most closely resembles the series it was based upon.
Jonathan Frakes has a hit, but not a smash.......2007-04-30
Before I go any further, allow me to make this clear: I am a die-hard Trekkie who grew up on the original series episodes and has come to love TNG as well, so I mean to call it like I see it.
I don't wish to give away any plot elements, but in order to adequately review the movie, I must make some minor "spoilers." This film highlights one of the ethical dilemmas that has come to be a hallmark of Star Trek since its inception. In a move rather similar to that of President Jackson in relocating the Southeastern Native American tribes, Starfleet officials in league with a shady group of aliens conspire to remove a primitive people from their world so that Federation citizens may reap the benefits of an unusual healing radiation emenating from the rings of said planet. Picard, ever the force of truth and justice, refuses to go along (hence the "Insurrection" title), leading to a battle between good and "greater good."
On the whole, I feel this was the most well-written and executed TNG Trek film. While I personally adored the previous 2, I thought their storylines were a bit contrived (not to mention the continuity errors caused by Kirk's "death" at the beginning of Generations). The deeper storyline of this movie is both its weakness and its strength; I had a bit of a problem following the plot the first time I saw the film, but after I was able to appreciate it, I realized how much better of a storyline it actually is. I highly recommend this movie to all TNG fans, and any Trekkie who enjoys the "ethical dilemma" storylines.
It's like one bit fat sweet Next Gen episode.......2007-04-07
It's like one bit fat sweet Next Gen episode with a much bigger budget, you'll love it. Just buy the video and see.
Entertaining...to a degree........2007-02-28
Not the best of TNG movies by far, this one is never the less entertaining. More like an episode of the series than an actual motion picture, I personally believe the script should be blamed as the director, Jonathan Frakes (Will Riker himself) did an amazingly wonderful job on the previous entry in the series, Star Trek: First Contact. The film suffers from a lack of a significant and powerful villain. Never the less, there's a lot of fun to be had here. The crew seems more like a family again.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is a seamless continuation of Peter Jackson's epic fantasy based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. After the breaking of the Fellowship, Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) journey to Mordor to destroy the One Ring of Power with the creature Gollum as their guide. Meanwhile, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) join in the defense of the people of Rohan, who are the first target in the eradication of the race of Men by the renegade wizard Saruman (Christopher Lee) and the dark lord Sauron. Fantastic creatures, astounding visual effects, and a climactic battle at the fortress of Helm's Deep make The Two Towers a worthy successor to The Fellowship of the Ring, grander in scale but retaining the story's emotional intimacy. These two films are perhaps the greatest fantasy films ever made, but they're merely a prelude to the cataclysmic events of The Return of the King. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Orlando! Bloom! can't! act!.......2007-06-12
I first saw this when it came out and like many people I was quite excited to see a full length live action (ie non animation) version of books that were a big part of my growing up years.
Although back then I enjoyed the film, looking back at it for the first time in many years later, I was surprised at my reaction to it. The visuals are still great, and the CGI still holds up pretty well. But the main problem I had with the film was the acting. It ranges from good to poor, but for me it's this inconsistency that stops me from getting immersed in the film. The film has a glaring conflict of acting styles from the quite old school Shakespearean of Ian McKellans Gandalf, to the "Method" acting of Aragorn, to just plain wooden-ness. There's an obvious problem with accents too, so we have American's trying to sound English, Australians trying to sound English, Australians trying to sound Irish, Londoners trying to sound like they're from Cornwall, and nobody really getting it totally right. For such a big budget movie, this lapse of quality is surprising. And, as my review header may suggest, I think Orlando Bloom is the worst screen actor I've yet seen. He's not just mediocre or okay, he's sometimes so bad, so woodenly earnest in his delivery that I actually laughed out loud a few times. "You would die before your stroke fell!" ranks up there with some of the all time worst acting performances in film history. If he was told to show grief he would furrow his brow a bit and frown. If it was surprise he was trying to convey he'd widen his eyes a bit and open his mouth a bit. It's all there in the movie.
The "comic relief" scenes with Gimli are only slightly less annoying than Jar Jar Binks too.
I can look back on this and enjoy some bits in this film and the other films of the trilogy but I don't believe that this series of movies is going to ever be classics of the future. Classics don't have you squirming in embarrassment at the acting.
An ok adaptation for the classic but not on par with the other two films.......2007-05-15
**Warning this review contains many spoilers** For staters I personally love the Lord of the Rings. This includes the movies but more so the books. I thought The Fellowship of the Rings was as near perfect an adaptation as a movie could have come to the book and I feel the same way about The Return of the King. Both are among the best movies I have ever seen. The Two Towers, however, falls short of it's antecessor's and predecessor's near perfection. When I first read the book I was amazed and fell in love with the powerful story and characters Tolkien had created but when I saw the movie I was very dissapointed. I have thought long and hard about what I don't like in this film and in fact I just finished watching it again. I also want everyone to understand that I'm not some crazed fan who is upset that they didn't include everything in the movie that was in the book. I am somewhat of a film maker myself and I know all to well how important pacing is. So here is my review from a film student's perspective.
The movie starts out very strong. The opening flashback to the fight in Moria is a masterpiece and probably the films strongest momment. We then meet up with all the old characters from the first movie. These opening scenes are very well done with some amazing cinematography, music, and special effects. These scenes are also very well paced. Jackson keeps the movie moving along and manages to introduce the new characters without ever getting off topic (something that plagues him later on). To be honest I have no complaints about these early scenes.
However, the film starts to go downhill about halfway through. To make Lord of the Rings more politically correct Jackson needed more female characters. So he expanded the role of Arwen. This worked great in the first one and I think her inclusion adds a lot to The Return of the King also. But in this one she just seems tagged on. There is a flashback sequence where we see her and Aragorn in Rivendell. At first this seems to work but it just goes on and on. It could have easily been cut down. To drag the story down even more right after the flashback we are treated to the films most unnecessary scene were Jackson totally gets off topic. We flash to present Rivendell where Elrond convinces Arwen to leave for Valinor. I was pretty sure that that was what Aragorn just did in the flashback. I simply became bored with the scene's redundency. To drag this vital middle section of the movie down even further Jackson cuts to some kind of weird flashforward to Aragorn's death. This is completely redundant to the point of the scene which is itself unnecessary. But this wasn't enough to get me to dislike the entire movie I was still looking forward to watching the rest.
However, my hopes were soon destroyed for the movie's second most unnecessary scene came right after it. Instead of simply having some nice and much needed character development as they march to Helm's Deep Peter Jackson decided to throw in probably the dumbest plot twist he could have: Aragorn dies... well not really but you think he does. For some reason Jackson felt it was important to throw a battle in and for some reason (God knows why) he thougth it would help the movie to make everyone think Aragorn was dead. At this point I totally started to lose interest in the movie. In a film the middle is one of the most important points for that is when you start building to the climax. Instead we get 15 minuets of slowmotion shots of everyone mourning Aragorn's death only to have him show up a little while later. I was just so bored at this point I could hardly stand it.
Luckly the pace starts to pick up but instead of getting exicted in anticipation for the big battle I just found myself thinking get on with it. All the very necessary character develoment before the battle could have easily taken the place of the unnecessary mess of scenes that didn't even appear in the book itself. But at last the battle arrived. Despite the King's long and boring monologue before it the battle was great... at first. The problem: it was just too long. It took away far to much from Fordo and Sam. To make things worse Jackson decided to trash Tolkeins wonderful ending with Frodo, Sam, and Gollum. Instead we get some poorly written scene that takes us way way off topic, farther off topic than any of the pointless scenes Pater Jackson wrote for the movie thus far. It is a scene that features a character no one cares about: Faramir. So what is this scene, well Faramir takes Frodo all the way back to Gondor! At this point I realized that Peter Jackson is quite possilbly one of the worst writers in Hollywood (an opinion that King Kong supports). The only reason the other two movies were so great was because he stuck more closely to the source material. Any auhtor or writer could have told him that this was a big mistake and totally off topic but apparently the other people who helped him write the script were either amazingly stupid or in a big hurry to finish the script in time. I just don't understand why someone would scrap a classic ending to a classic novel written by a master storyteller in favor of some poorly written, uncreative, and redundent garbage. I have been pretty supportive of all the changes Peter Jackson made but this crosses the line. Never have I seen a director with the ego to alter a beloved story so profoundly in favor of his own ending. When you choose to adapt a novel you lose some degree of creative freedom and this is just the most unbelievable example of a director going to far.
My last bit of criticism is directed at the way Jackson decided to end the film. He some reason thought that he needed some closure for the movie (despite the fact that there's a sequel) so he had Frodo and Sam make up only to have them start fighting again at the start of the third film. This was a poor choice but since he completely ruined the cliffhanger ending I guess he needed some kind of closure to end it with. But once again his poor ability as a storyteller shows because now we find ourselves with a fade out almost exactly like the ending to the first one and it seems like Fordo and Sam have made no progress whatsoever in the journey. A poor ending to a dissapointing followup to one of the best movies of our time. The only thing that saves this film from becoming analogous to The Matrix Reloaded is what little remains of Tolkien's masterpeice inside this shell of egotism that Jackson poorly constructed.
Excelente aventura.......2007-05-13
A mi modo de ver fiel a la version escrita, aunque le hayan cortado la parte final para insertarla en el retorno del Rey. Como las otras dos pelicuals recomendable!.

if i could choose a character out of middle-earth, and become that character, i would choose king theoden...i watch his parts over and over..like "where is the horse and the rider?" and i love some of his other lines...like when his men say,"but we cannot defeat them" ...and theoden replys, "no" ... "but we will meet them in battle, none the less" or somethin' like that.(but that is in the third movie) :-)
...he's so dang tuff! and wears really cool armor.
i happen to like those hollywood battle scenes, alot, so i enjoy watching the battle at helm's deep, over and over.
and, of course, at the same time, we have little frodo...where the internal conflict resides...different kind of battle...but same problem...
"good 'vs' evil".
but i don't wanna be frodo...i want to be theoden.
who would you choose?
wake.
"The DVD box #2".......2007-04-11
Well, this is by far the BEST DVD box that i ever bought, as a fan of tolkien those extra cenes just blown me away, i feel like it was a new Lord of The Rings movie. If you're a fan of Middle Earth this dvd is a "must have" in the dvd section.
One of the extra scenes show the relationship of Boromir and his brother Faramir back at Gondor, and what happens before Boromir travel to Rivendell to join the Council of Elrond and the Fellowship of the Ring, just stunning.
Buy the Return of the King and Fellowship of the ring too, you will not be dissapointed.

The girl with the striped moonboots and royal-blue epaulets is back from the 1980s to save the world for a new generation of young viewers. This time the gal, her rainbow-tailed horse Starlite, and her sidekick sprite Twink must face down a selfish princess who has stolen the biggest diamond in the universe, preventing light from reaching the world, and sending earth into a neverending winter. (Don't try to justify the plot from a scientific standpoint.) The rerelease of this 1985 production marks the relaunching of the Rainbow Brite franchise, following the successful returns of other '80s era cartoon characters like Care Bears and My Little Pony. Nostalgic young parents will revel in the big hair and big shoulders, and little ones will just enjoy the pretty horses and the colors. This 85-minute movie may also have some appeal to young males as the secondary hero is a boy with a robotic horse. (Ages 3 and older) --Kimberly Heinrichs

I'm a guy and I liked her, does this make me a freak?.......2006-08-30
I can't say honestly how I came to know of Rainbow Brite because I just don't remember. All I remember is they were showing this movie on the disney channel once and that was it for me, I had the biggest crush on her as a kid so i'd watch this movie every chance I got. I'm 24 years old now and my crush/love/infatuation with her was restarted this past January, and when I heard that this movie was released on DVD I was stoked, I'd definitely reccomend it for the little ones though.
AMAZON DISSAPPOINTS AGAIN.......2006-08-07
This was the first movie I ever went to, at the age of 5. I used to have colouring books, and really love the whole concept of Rainbow brite's quest of bringing beauty and happiness to the world.
I ordered this in May and am still waiting for it. I am really disappointed with the delivery and site on this one. The site has stated it has 6 copies of this but am still wondering if they have any at all....I wouldn't bother with ordering this one and would definitely be looking at other websites after this.
FALSE ADVERTISING.......2006-07-18
i loved this movie as a child, but ever since i ordered it in decemeber, i am still waiting for and keep approving delays in my order - almost 8 months later. i'm getting pretty upset with amazon for advertising something on their website, that they cannot provide. don't bother ordering this dvd from amazon unless you like approving delays on your order.
****UPDATE****
i finally ordered one off ebay, and it arrived four days later. thanks ebay!
Love the Movie - Don't Love Waiting For It.......2006-07-07
I am in the same boat as everyone else: I love this movie and was ESTATIC to see it was available on DVD. I am just still waiting for it through amazon. I ordered the movie on May 16, 2006 and it is now July 6, 2006 and still no movie. I am NOT happy. I am disappointed in Amazon for advertising a 1 to 3 week delivery period. That is a complete lie and would recommend to anyone purchasing this movie to click on the the "new & used" link, or to use eBay if they can.
Aside from the ordering conflict- the movie itself is wonderful and I am so HAPPY to read that I am NOT the only adult (23 years old) who is in search of a classic! YOU GO RAINBOW BRITE!!
A rainbow trip for 80s fans........2006-06-26
As the only Rainbow Brite title available on DVD, I'll take what I can get. Rainbow is surprising adventurous and fearless -- and much less cloyingly sweet than I remember. Think of her as "Baby She-Ra"!
This movie feels like it was supposed to attract boys to the franchise as well. It introduces a new male lead, Krys and his Knight Rider-esque horse, On-X. This movie also has more robots, monsters, and scary lizard people than you would expect from a movie aimed at young girls. And thankfully, there is only one musical number at the beginning of the movie.
The animation is crisp and clean. The transfer is surprisingly vivid for a 20 year old movie. This may have been many viewer's first exposure to anime, as this beat Transformers: The Movie to the theaters by a year. And Akira wasn't released until 1988. The high detail/low frame rate is a signature of Japanese animation. And this has the same production values of mid-80s anime.
Like many 80s children cartoons, character motivation and plot aren't always coherant. It's never explained why the Princess wants all these jewels. (where are her parents, anyway?) There are some funny scenes involving her and her pet gemstone she drags around everywhere. Might be a little scary for very young children. But I think it's a fun movie for nostalgia-hungry Gen Xer's as well as young children of today.

The first animated work from Leiji Matsumoto, who would create the popular Captain Harlock saga, Star Blazers (Uchu Senkan Yamato or Space Cruiser Yamato, 1974) was a landmark program in Japan and America. When it aired in syndication in the U.S. in 1979, the character names were anglicized (Susumu Kodai became Derek Wildstar; Admiral Okita, Captain Avatar, etc.), the violence and drinking were heavily censored, and the World War II connections of the Yamato were tactfully downplayed. The Quest for Iscandar comprises the first 26-episode continuity; two additional TV series and several features would follow. In the year 2199, the war with the planet Gamilon has turned the Earth's surface into a radioactive desert. The radiation will penetrate the bedrock protecting humanity's underground cities in another year, destroying all remaining life. A message arrives from Queen Starsha of the planet Iscandar, offering a way to eliminate the deadly radiation and providing plans for an engine that can power a ship across the 148,000 light-year gap. Scientists convert the ruined shell of the battleship Yamato into a starship in a desperate attempt to save the planet, and the perilous voyage begins. The animation and character designs look very dated, but Gen-Xers who grew up watching it remember Star Blazers vividly. The bonus materials include a virtual tour of the Argo, an interactive map of the journey to Iscandar, and some footage deleted from the American broadcast version. Unrated; suitable for ages 8 and up: Violence largely restricted to spaceship and robot attacks. --Charles Solomon

Star Blazers deserves better! A more technical review........2007-04-08
Star Blazers, ah the memories of rushing home from school in the early 80's to catch the next adventure of the Star Force's journey to Iscandar. Knowing the opening and closing themes word for word and even being able to recite the narrator's form intro at the start of every episode (In the year 2199, Earth is under severe attack from the mysterious planet Gamilon...)
So why only the 3 star review? Voyager Entertainment Inc.'s (VEI) horrible handing of the series they unfortunately have the rights to... When they initially acquired the rights from Kidmark they cleaned up the picture and made it more watchable. That was a good thing, for 1994... But for a 2001 DVD release it's unacceptable... Especially for what they charge.
In 1995 I collected VEI's VHS release of this series in the 13 individual volumes (2 eps per volume). What I didn't like about them (I'll use volume 1 as an example) was that they would use the opening theme, show episode 1, then it would just roll into episode 2, and then the ending theme. Back then VEI also offered a more economical 6 volume box set. In doing so some of the opening recaps were cut as they would string 5 episodes together almost like a movie. Example; volume 1 of the box set would go; opening theme, episode 1,2,3,4,5, ending theme. This six volume VHS box set is important in this review because it is THIS very set that VEI "shoveled" onto DVD. Yes, they used the old VHS box set masters for this DVD release. There was actually more on the individually sold 2-episode volumes that they released 12 years ago on VHS! Now, on the DVD it seems like you can choose an individual episode and watch it that way (with opening and ending themes). Nope, if you choose episode 1 it will automatically go to episode 2 without opening and ending themes. The going theme for VEI (other than VHS masters shovelware) seems to be treating each VOLUME (whether it has 2 episodes or 5) as one whole smashed together episode. Now? Each disc is treated the same way, as one episode. Very sloppy and very disappointing.
I would've also liked to have seen the commercial bumpers and the "Stay tuned for scenes to the next Star Blazers!" in Derek Wildstar's voice. Not vital but goes with the nostalgia that makes this series so special to us fans. They did this for Robotech and the Transformers. Why not Star Blazers?
The extras are nice but be aware that a lot of the last names for a lot of the characters were made up years after the show was off the air. Names like "Nova Forrester, Dashell Jordan, Abraham Avatar." These characters among others never had last names in the series as we saw it on TV years ago. It was just "Nova, Dash, Captain Avatar, Eager, Conroy, etc." I'm not bashing the invented names but just be aware that they were made up by fans that did a comic for VEI back in 1995-96. On the deleted scene of the sinking of the original battleship Yamato, the scene that was used here is from the Space Battleship Yamato movie and NOT the TV series which was a longer scene.
I see a lot of reviews saying they would've prefered to have the original Japanese episodes on here as well. I couldn't agree more... But the fact is, VEI only owns the rights to Star Blazers NOT the original Japanese TV series. They have the rights to distribute the Yamato films but not the TV series. The other problem is that Star Blazers was heavily edited for time and violence. The episodes would not be compatible for a dual language track. Our best bet for seeing Yamato TV with English subtitles other than illegal bootlegs is for a domestic anime company like AnimEigo or ADV to get the licensing rights. And for Star Blazers to get the proper remastering it deserves? A good anime company would have to buy it from VEI. Unfortunately I just don't see that happening. They've had the rights for 14 years now and still can't get it right.
Am I Missing Something Here???.......2007-03-15
I'm giving the set three stars based on how much I enjoyed watching Star Blazers as a kid - being 37 years old, I have a lot of pleasant nostalgia for the show - and NOT on the product itself (box art, bonus features, quality of the discs, etc) because I'm not going to buy THIS set. So why am I even writing a review for something I don't even have?
Every early anime that I know of that was shown in early-80's America is out on DVD now - most notably Gatchaman (edited and packaged as both G-Force & Battle Of The Planets) and Voltron. These old shows have been packaged onto DVD's not only completely unedited, but also with the option to watch the show in Japanese with subtitles - you know, the way it originally was. This gave me the option to not only relive old memories by seeing the English version, but also to hear the REAL voices of the characters, and see how different the dialogue was. While Gatchaman was the biggest surprise, seeing Voltron in Japanese was the biggest trip. Also, these shows cost next-to-nothing at a used DVD store, or even here at Amazon.
So why in the world - HOW in the world - could I possibly pay a HUNDRED dollars for edited English-only early anime? Deleted scenes??? Put the friggin' scenes BACK in the episodes and sell us non-wealthy fans unedited episodes! And there's just NO excuse for not having a Japanese soundtrack - every other anime does except for OLD stuff like Astro Boy, Speed Racer, and Gigantor. (And even Speed Racer has a Spanish track...)
I'd have left all of this alone, and not written this review, if not for that unbelievable price tag. It just seems wrong to me. Hopefully someday there'll be an 'ultimate' version - heck, a LOT of anime releases updated boxsets. 'Complete Collection', 'Ultimate Collection', then 'Anime Legends' collection in a thinpack... maybe, hopefully, someday that will happen for Star Blazers too.
Still the best - put up with the minor things..........2006-09-03
Okay, people, stop griping about the small stuff. I mean, come on - how many people "hate" Star Trek because the Klingons changed foreheads? It's a cartoon, it's made up, we're called on to suspend our disbelief watching anything, so have a little mercy and forgive a couple mistakes. If you have so much pride or so little self-esteem that you need to point out a couple production flaws or the transfer rate, well, then your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.
Okay, that being said...
I've always been hooked by a great story. Epic masterpieces are hard to find, especially on TV, and I was hooked by Starblazers immediately. Of course, at first you get into the Wave Motion Gun blasting things to bits and all the battles with Desslok and the Gamilons. I watched it in the mornings when I was a kid, and the last episode was on the first day of school. We were one of the first families to get a VCR, and I begged my mom to tape the last episode for me. You can imagine the suspense - a whole school day in (I think) 2nd grade waiting to see if they would save the earth with the Cosmo-DNA, and what happens but my mom taped the wrong channel. AAAAGGH! I had to wait a year for it to recycle and you better believe I saw it then.
(spoiler alert - this paragraph) I rewatched the series once I received it (now in my 30's) and realized how genius it really was. It has everything that good epic stories have to have - great character development, a death of a major character, struggles that really mean something, connections to anyone in the audience - you name it, Starblazers has it. I related to Wildstar - some things in his actions and his family are awfully familiar. I can relate to his struggles with not having anyone, and that makes it all the more special when Nova likes him for who he is. The episode where he doesn't have anyone to talk to at home really hits me; it's also probably when Nova realizes he's more than just a flashy guns-blazing type. Then you get episodes where the unlikely characters are the hero - IQ-9 protecting Nova on the "Bees" episode, Royster (I think that was his name - Sandor's helper) with the Wave Motion Gun idea for firing themselves out of the tube thing, and Nova being willing to give herself to save the ship (and earth) by activating the Cosmo-DNA, to name a few. That whole scene is as brilliant an example of writing as I've ever encountered, including any literature, TV, movies, etc. Sandor is forced to watch helplessly, and Wildstar has already tried to be the hero and can do nothing more; Nova does what she has to do and willingly gives herself for the crew and the earth. Stealing a little from the Bible, there's brilliant ending where Avatar sees earth "one more time" as he wished (Moses seeing the promised land but not going in), and, the sacrifice having proven successful, Nova comes out of her coma. It's such a great way to end the series.
I showed Starblazers to a couple friends who had never seen it; one stayed up all night and watched the whole series, and the other finished it over the course of a week, only because he didn't want to lose his job! He would come home from work and take over the TV. This is a man in his late 20s at the time. Five stars, no question. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll sing along. Buy it.
as I remember it.......2006-08-25
I am pleased with the overall presentation. Having the original format gives it the feel of retro-realism. My only complaint is that the portion showing the sinking of the Yamato in WWII is corrupted and chops through the entire clip. The only recording flaw I have detected.
I had recollections of Deslock changing from fair skinned to blue skinned. Watching the episodes verified for me that he changed along with other characters to the unifying blue skin color between episode 10 & 11. No explanation for this change is given though (unless I missed it somewhere).
I look forward to viewing the Comet Empire in the near future.
This was the show that introduced me to anime!.......2006-07-05
I'm really surprised this anime doesn't have a stronger following, this is one of the first animes that was brought to the US that had an actual ongoing storyline. It also is the anime that upped my expectations of cartoons, after the series, I was much more skeptical and demanding of how cartoons where done. Why won't Toonami show this series. This show is what really made anime into what it is today!

Orlando! Bloom! can't! act!.......2007-06-12
Gotta Have All 3.......2007-04-27
the ring trilogy is the ultimate battle between good and evil...and the same struggle within, that we all must face...
if i could choose a character out of middle-earth, and become that character, i would choose king theoden...i watch his parts over and over..like "where is the horse and the rider?" and i love some of his other lines...like when his men say,"but we cannot defeat them" ...and theoden replys, "no" ...

Star Trek fans were decidedly mixed in their reactions to this, the ninth big-screen feature in Paramount's lucrative Trek franchise, but die-hard loyalists will appreciate the way this Next Generation adventure rekindles the spirit of the original Trek TV series while combining a tolerable dose of New-Agey philosophy with a lighthearted plot for the TNG cast.
Murray Abraham, hamming it up under makeup resembling a cosmetic surgeon's worst nightmare), who's in cahoots with a renegade Starfleet admiral (Anthony Zerbe, in one of his final screen roles). They covet the fountain-of-youth power of the Ba'ku planet, but because their takeover plan violates Starfleet's Prime Directive of noninterference, it's up to Picard and crew to stop the scheme.
As costar and director, Jonathan Frakes proves a capable carrier of the Star Trek flame--and it's nice to see women in their 40s portrayed as smart and sexy--but while this is surely an adequate Trek adventure, it doesn't quite rank with the best in the series.

4 Stars for the anime, 2 Stars for the DVD.......2005-05-02
I'm still not sure what the Rating systems is for, the content or the product. I think it should be for the product since that's what's being sold. Or maybe amazon should start a dual rating system. This dvd release is really bad. It looks like they got ahold of some tapes from tv station back in the 70's. I've been comparing it to the chinese release of the original japanese series... there is absolutely no comparison. The only reason I would buy this series is for the american soundtrack. It's nostalgic. If you're watching Star Blazers for the first time, just get the chinese version, it's way less expensive, 26 episodes for about $40 (compared to 5 episodes for $30???), it has the original japanese dialogue with english subtitles, it's UNCUT (and there was a bit cut from the american version) and WHAT QUALITY!! It looks like they got the original film negatives and remastered it. This american dvd... well.. that's greed for you. Let's hope the voyager license expires soon!
starblazers goood.......2005-01-02
i just picked up the dvd of the first 5 episodes and must say that the vhs version {by jupiter} was much smoother and cleaner than this {dvd} version. however this is better than nothing as stated by others and my wife who has been a fan for nigh on 25 years now. so if you must have your starblazers as my wife does then definitely pick this up.AND SEND IN YOUR CARDS.
Another version?.......2002-09-08
Not sure what DVD the other reviewers were looking at, but the one I bought had a slideshow tour of the Yamato on it, so it isn't quite exactly right to say there are *no* extras (though a somewhat disappointing extra). It is true for Part II of the series, though. All in all, it leaves the viewer only nearly satisfied. The price is just a bit high for what you're getting.
Star Blazers -- The Quest for Iscandar -- Series 1, Part I.......2002-03-17
I was first introduced to Star Blazers as a 12-year-old in the fall of 1979. I only caught the second half of this series, but I loved it, and I love it as much today.
Of course, having watched other sci-fi series like Star Trek: The Next Generation, Babylon 5 and others in later years, I try to look for little inconsistencies in a storyline such as Star Blazers. It's not that I want to tear the storyline apart, like "The Nit Pickers Guide to Star Trek," but I just want to see where are slight errors or abberations in that storyline.
For instance, after the battle at Pluto, it only took Captain Avatar's ship a very short time to return to Earth. However, while making preparations for the jump to warp from the moon to Mars, Captain Avatar says it would normally take months to make such a journey at normal travel speeds. How, then, could Avatar's ship get back to Earth in such a short time if his ship did not have warp capability?
But, as I said, I am not attempting to tear the storyline apart. This storyline, in the format of the old Republic Serials like "Commando Cody," compels you to come back for more. At the end of each episode, you find out how much time is left for Earth. And you want to know what lies in store for the Argo and its crew in upcoming episodes. It is such a beautifully crafted storyline that way!
I guess some characters like IQ-9 are meant as comic relief for the storyline, but I would not have put IQ-9 in the storyline were I its creator. These kind of characters just detract and divert from the storyline. But, again, this is just a minor issue. IQ-9 does have some good moments later in the storyline, and I do note that in his favour.
But I guess the best thing about this storyline is that Captain Avatar does not lead the Away Missions. Avatar stays on the bridge of the Argo, where he belongs. He does not put himself directly in danger, like Captain James T. Kirk or Captain John J. Sheridan. Avatar knows his place, and he leaves his subordinates to go into danger and do the dirty work. Besides, Avatar is so critical to the success of the mission, it would be suicidal to put him directly in harm's way.
Well, that pretty well covers it for me. I think my review of this DVD would carry over to the other DVDs in this series. Not that my opinion counts for much, of course, but I think I have given this DVD a fair hearing.
No, you can overlook the inconsistencies in this storyline and love Starblazers. I have since I was 12 years old, and I'll love it for many years to come.
Woohooo.......2002-01-09
One day I was discussing anime with some people at work and it made me think of the Star Blazers tune back from when I was 7 or 8 years old. So, I went lookin on the internet for the series on DVD. At the time they hadn't even released part I yet, so I waited and bought it the day it came out. The grainy film (it hasn't been touched up) and quirky music only seem to add value for me because it is exactly the way I remembered it. Enhanced sound may have been okay though, since I did spend a lot of money on my surround system. (Thus one star deducted)
Also what may be a point of interest... I filled in the registration card that came with the DVD. Then I waited for a long time for the second disc to come out. When it finally came out I popped in the disc and they had added all the features I requested. Lost footage, etc. Except for better sound.

Fire up the Wave Motion Gun, part 2.......2002-09-25
If you are a fan of the series, or just looking for something from the mid-to-late 1970's TV that preceeded STAR WARS, then this is for you.
Be sure to get the first in the series, as the story starts there...it makes for great marathon viewing.
Also, take a look @ my comment on the series; it can be found on the page for the "Complete Series 1 Collection."
Great show, would be nice for better DVD.......2001-11-09
I loved the cartoon Starblazers and enjoyed seeing the show again, but it would have been nice for the colors to be reworked. The film, itself, is showing its age.
DVD getting better.......2001-07-19
The DVD is production and value is getting better. The sound improves as well as the picture. An extra bonus scene cut from the original Japanese version is included as well as character bios. Overall, I think this is about the right amount of production value this series can support. About a 37% value over the first disc in the series.
Much Better Than the First Disc.......2001-05-28
Star Blazers: The Quest for Iscandar Part II, contains episodes 6-9 (out of 26) of the first season of the cult-favorite Americanized Japanese Anime series from the early 1980's.
For the uninitiated, here's a rundown of the plot. In 2199 Earth was under attack by an "evil" alien race called the Gamilons. The Gamilons bombed earth with "planet bombs" which destroyed the planet and emitted high levels of radiation, thus driving mankind into underground cities. In one Earth year the planet would become uninhabitable. Queen Starsha of Iscandar offers mankind hope in the form of the Cosmic DNA which would cure all mankind from the radiation sickness. She sends Earth a message along with powerful technology that will allow mankind to travel to Iscandar to get the Cosmic DNA. The Star Force is formed to travel to Iscandar to fetch the Cosmic DNA. Their faithful battleship is the Argo, a renovated WWII era navy battleship remade into a Starship. There is just one minor problem though, Iscandar is 148,000 Light Years away. No one has ever traveled that far before. More importantly, the Star Force only has one year to travel there and back for a total of 296,000 Light Years.
Here is a summary of the four episodes included on this DVD:
Episode 6: The Argo lands on Titan to search for the rare element Titanite for repairs. Wildstar, Nova and IQ-9 battle off the Gamilons. Plus, Wildstar learns the final fate of his brother's ship and crew.
Episode 7: The 2nd Battle of Pluto. The Argo sets out to destroy the Gamilon base on Pluto to put a stop to the Planet Bombing but meets up with the menace of the Reflection Gun.
Episode 8: It's undersea warfare on Pluto after the Reflection Gun sinks the Argo. The Star Force must take out the Reflection Gun to have a fighting chance.
Episode 9: Heavily damaged, the Argo seeks refuge in the Asteroid belt of Minerva to make repairs and a final stand against Colonel Ganz and the remaining Gamilon forces from Pluto.
