Considered by many to represent a low point in Steven Spielberg's career, 1990's Always did suggest something of a temporary drift in the director's sensibility. A remake of the classic Spencer Tracy film A Guy Named Joe, Always stars Richard Dreyfuss as a Forest Service pilot who takes great risks with his own life to douse wildfires from a plane. After promising his frightened fiancée (Holly Hunter) to keep his feet on the ground and go into teaching, Dreyfuss's character is killed during one last flight. But his spirit wanders restlessly, hopelessly attached to and possessive of Hunter, who can't see or hear him. Then the real conflict begins: a trainee pilot (Brad Johnson), a likable doofus, begins wooing a not-unappreciative Hunter--and it becomes Dreyfuss's heavenly mandate to accept, and even assist in, their budding romance. The trouble with the film is a certain airlessness, a hyper-inventiveness in every scene and sequence that screams of Spielberg's self-education in Hollywood classicism. Unlike the masters he is constantly quoting and emulating in Always, he forgets to back off and let the movie breathe on its own sometimes, which would better serve his clockwork orchestration of suspense and comedy elsewhere. Still, there are lovely passages in this film, such as the unforgettable look on Dreyfuss's face a half-second before fate claims him. John Goodman contributes good supporting work, and Audrey Hepburn makes her final screen appearance as an angel. --Tom Keogh

I leanded how to pilot a plane at Hemet Ryan Field in Hemet, CA and I know that the PBY in this film belonged to Venable Flying Serive and that MAKES this film more special to me than anything........
Fantastic score... wish they left the oldies stuff off.......2007-03-20
I would have preferred more of the etherial Williams music and less of the oldies and country stuff. It's a very good score... very sedate stuff for the most part (and hushed, too... you have to crank the music to hear some of Williams' music)
Always.......2007-03-11
Wonderful movie. Great flying scenes and a love story the ladies will love!
Always.......2007-03-11
This movie is a great story of love and loss. If you liked Ghost, then you'll love this flim its the aviator version of that story. This film has an alstar cast Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter, John Goodman,Audrey Hepburn. Always is about daredevil firefighter pilots that fly planes to help put out forest fires.
Always.......2007-01-22

Does it really matter what's true or false in Domino if the movie's so deliriously hard to resist? Tony Scott's dizzying film about his late friend, former model and famous bounty hunter Domino Harvey (1969-2005), is more tribute than biography, riffing on Harvey's action-packed exploits and brief reality-TV celebrity in a fractured, manic style that's so visually over-stimulating that it could throw vulnerable viewers into grand mal seizures. Scott's barrage of audio-visual hyperactivity is ultimately exhausting, and Richard Kelly's fragmented screenplay does nothing to discourage Scott's relentless MTV "style" (and we use that word oh-so-loosely here). And yet, with Keira Knightley so ferociously alluring in the title role, and Mickey Rourke (as her boss and bounty-hunting mentor, Ed Mosbey) serving up a second dose of his Sin City comeback, Domino grabs you by the throat and never lets go. Scott's embrace of nihilism is typically facile but it propels a vision of wretched humanity that pulls you in with train-wreck intensity. The movie's bracing humor also makes fine use of a large supporting cast including Christopher Walken, Jacqueline Bissett, Dabney Coleman, Edgar Ramirez, Mo'Nique, Delroy Lindo, Mena Suvari, Lucy Liu, and former Beverly Hills 90210 stars Ian Ziering and Brian Austin Green (the latter two poking good-sport fun at themselves as "celebrity hostages"). The accidental overdose death of the real Domino (daughter of The Manchurian Candidate star Laurence Harvey) in the summer of 2005 threw a sad shroud of irony over this movie's theatrical release, but for all its reckless indulgence, Domino is a fitting eulogy for a troubled woman whose credo ("Heads you live, tails you die") is reflected in Scott's fictionalized rendition of the dangerous life she lived. --Jeff Shannon

Who needs Tarantino..........2007-07-03
Another great, stylish and out-there flick from Tony Scott, the master of visuals and pacing. This is one of the greatest rollercoaster movies ever made, and is so full of energy and ideas its just a joy. Go see this movie!!!
What A Wonderful Opportunity...LOST/WASTED.......2007-06-06
I don't want to denigrate Tony Scott as a terrific and talented guy, but DOMINO is probably one of the 10 worst big-budget films I've seen in a long, long time. The story of Bounty Hunter, Domino Harvey, is a very interesting story. Just achingly full of potential for an excellent writer, director, and EDITOR(s) to make a fantastic movie from.
Some years ago, HBOFilms did a movie based on the life and times of the
USA's first supermodel,Gia Carangi. Angelina Jolie played the lead role in this movie ( the title was GIA ). What a GREAT movie. Genres aside, I do believe that Domino Harvey's story--"rich English girl becomes topnotch bounty hunter"--had this potential. It's too bad it couldn't have been done this way!!!
I have no clue what I just saw..........2007-05-25
If you've read Lord of the Rings or watched the first movie the Fellowship of the Ring, you'd know of the quote "I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve". Substitute the word "you" for the movie Domino and maybe deserve sounds too harsh but that's how it feels to me. There's plenty to like in the film but then it does other things that almost ruin it. I say ruin it because this is one of those kind of films where it's fine as what it is but what could've been kind of goes through your mind.
The film is based on the true story...kinda, as it says in the opening, about Domino Harvey, daughter of actor Lawrence Harvey. She's a bit troubled as she's into anti-anything almost and carries around a pair of nunchukus with which she's quite skilled. She falls in with Ed and Choco, 2 bounty hunters and inexplicably they become stars of a reality tv show. The main issue the 3 have to deal with is 10 million stolen from a hotel owner and plus we have an issue with a Las Vegas as well as the FBI.
While Keira Knightley doesn't exactly scream bad*** bounty hunter, she's actually really great and is able to balance an emotional aspect as well as being a tough-as-nails chick. Normally actors who try to be a bit more adult and aggressive almost look unintentionally funny, like a kid who dresses up as a ninja for Halloween. There's also Mickey Rourke playing off his Sin City comeback as Ed, Christopher Walken as a TV producer and even Ian Ziering and Brian Austin Green as the reality show hosts.
Where the problem hits is with the MTV-style editing. It's like the camera can't sit still for 10 seconds without being jettisoned off somewhere with camera trickery or image fadeouts and it kind of robs certain scenes from any emotional impact. There's 2 things that are often repeated, that of echoed dialogue as well as Domino's mantra of "heads you live, tails you die". Both are fine and don't appear much but you still wish they didn't have it so much. The only real scene that shows off the hyper-kinetic style is a big hotel shootout which easily beats the one in Smokin Aces but not as good as Tony Scott's own True Romance shootout. Oh well, close enough.
The pacing though is nicely handled as there's a lot of story to get through without getting too slow but when the story is filled with double crosses are believed-to-be double crosses, it might make your head confused. There's at least some comic relief provided by the 90210 boys and I always love how Rourke says god**** for some reason. The film as a whole though is strangely accessible like even though you may not like the style of the film, there seems to be enough to make it watchable and most films don't even have that.
If you were expecting anything less from Tony Scott, well that's your own fault. Known for Days of Thunder and Deja Vu, this is the kind of film you'd expect from someone like him: it's frantic, frenetic and maybe a bit schizophrenic but there's something watchable about the whole mess.
just sit back and enjoy..........2007-04-30
*Domino* is supposedly inspired by real-life Domino Harvey, who turned down a glamorous Beverly Hills life for the adventures of a bounty hunter.
Domino (Knightley) is recounting her latest gig to Agent Miles (Liu). Her story is nothing like *Cops* or *Dog the Bounty Hunter*. Her adventures are fast-paced and dangerous along with her comrades, Ed (Rourke) and Choco (Ramirez). Shadowing them is a reality TV show, which includes Brian Austin Green and Ian Ziering, former stars of *Beverly Hills 90210*.
Like I said, it's fast-paced. Action-packed. Suspenseful. Star-studded. Visually stimulating (maybe a bit too much for some viewers). This movie will grab your attention as you'll be figuring out who scamming whom. That's my kind of action movie.
However, I have to agree with another reviewer as it does seem like the movie isn't really about Domino. It's really about a girl who needs a $300,000 operation. This girl is the grand-daughter of Lateesha (Mo'Nique), a 28-year-old grandmother. Lateesha is related to Claremont (Lindo), who runs the bounty hunting business, which includes Domino and her pals. Can you see how messy this has already become? Now, throw in the mob, the FBI, a reality TV crew, some friends, some thieves, a casino owner, some gun-toting bodyguards and some not-quite-innocent bystanders into the picture. The mess has gotten out of control.
It doesn't matter whether or not you believe these events have actually happen in the life of Domino Harvey. What matters is that you sit back and enjoy this trippy film.
Very possibly the dumbest movie I have ever seen........2007-04-20
I mean this is like "Plan 9" stupid! I'm baffled to see so many people on here liked it. I thought it looked real good from the previews but luckily I didn't see it in the theater, I rented it. And seriously I almost turned it off a couple of times but then it got to point where I just had to see how stupid it could actually get and let me tell you; the acid trip scene in the desert with the vision of Tom Waits takes the cake! I would have laughed out loud if I wasn't so jaw droppingly stunned by it. Another "great" scene is when Domino gets a house full of Mexicans with drawn guns to undraw them by giving one of them a lap dance. Hillarious! Especially since they show a picture of the real Domino at the end of the movie. Keira Knightley she was not! I don't know what third world country this woman gave up a career in modeling to become a bounty hunter in but I can't imagine this woman was ever sexy. Even in her early twenties.
To me this movie is more of a joke than anything else. The acting is NOT good, the directing is NOT good, the cinamatography is NOT good, Knightley was horribly cast as Domino. The whole movie is laughable. Top 5 worst movies of all time.

Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce star in this 1939 adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's frequently filmed novel, and the result is one of the most atmospheric and purely enjoyable versions of The Hound of the Baskervilles. Except for minor changes, the script is true to Doyle's enthralling mystery about a centuries-long curse against heirs to the Baskerville estate, situated within the haunting and deadly Dartmoor in the southwest of England. With the arrival of a new master, Canadian Henry Baskerville (Richard Greene), Sherlock Holmes (Rathbone) and Dr. Watson (Bruce) are called upon to solve the strange case of the "gigantic hound" that may be readying to savage the poor fellow. Wonderful sets, crisp performances, and Rathbone's accessible but no-nonsense take on the Great Detective make this a real delight. Typical of the 20th Century Fox Holmes pictures, there's an in-joke, a final line of censor-defying dialogue alluding to Holmes's little problem with cocaine. --Tom Keogh
Description
The Hound Of The Baskervilles
The most celebrated tale of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's canon, `The Hound of the Baskervilles' is set in the Victorian Age and was originally released by Twentieth Century-Fox in 1939. It is the first of fourteen Sherlock Holmes films starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.
When Sir Charles Baskerville is killed outside of Baskerville Hall, his good friend Dr. Mortimer (Lionel Atwill) fears that the curse of the Baskervilles has struck once again. Mortimer enlists the help of Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone), before yet another Baskerville can succumb to the evil legend.
Sir Henry Baskerville (Richard Greene) arrives in London to claim his inheritance. Mortimer takes Sir Henry to 221b Baker Street and expresses his fear for Sir Henry's life. Baskerville soon learns that along with the grand mansion on the moor, comes a devilish curse, a curious butler (John Carradine) and a cast of bizarre neighbors.
Holmes, pressed with "other business," sends Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) to accompany Sir Henry to the dreary moor to protect the young Baskerville from the legend of the wicked hound. Of course, with danger afoot, Sherlock Holmes may not be so far from the scene as is assumed.

The Ultimate Version.......2007-06-27
Many remakes have been done of The Hound of the Baskervilles. None equal this version--not just because of Rathbone and Bruce, but because of the incredible supporting cast: Richard Greene, Wendy Barry, John Carradine, et al. The atmospherics are perfect; the dog is scary and the grimpen mire is practically a character in its own right. This is the Hound against which all others are measured.
Terror by Night is also excellent, if you don't mind the miniaturization scenes of the train, which are a tad cheesy.
Hound of the Baskervilles.......2007-06-21
Arthur Conan Doyle's greatest creation--and the world's most famous detective-- comes to sparkling life in this chilling, quasi-supernatural whodunit, thanks to the wonderfully talented Basil Rathbone. Of course, there are snappy performances all around from an excellent supporting cast that includes Bruce, Greene, Lionel Atwill (as a family friend), John Carradine (as a queer butler), and Wendy Barrie (as Henry's love interest). Rathbone and Bruce's rapport, however, has come to overshadow all subsequent Holmes-Watson actor pairings. Lanfield's quick-paced "Hound" is one of their most thrilling outings (there are 13 in all!), especially with the foggy English moors providing a splendidly ominous atmosphere.
Hound of the Baskervilles with Basil Rathbone.......2007-03-29
My favorite Sherlock Holmes story, family curse, hound from hell, an old family mansion, deserted moor, an escaped convict, and Sherlock Holmes and his faithful Watson, add a fireplace, and hot cup of tea or coco and you have your evenings entertainment. I prefer this movie over most of them (except for jeremy brett version). They made a couple of changes in the story deviating from the book, and it worked. I will always love Nigel Bruce as Watson, and Basil Rathbone as Holmes.
Great!.......2007-01-11
We have not watched this DVD but have seen it before. We wanted it for our collection.
The film that introduced Basil Rathbone in the part of Sherlock Holmes..........2007-01-02
To select just one representative Sherlock Holmes film from the hundred or so made since Sherlock Holmes Baffled is a virtual impossibility, especially as no one actor (including such famous talents as John Barrymore, Clive Brook and Raymond Massey) has yet managed to successfully transfer the true Holmesian character to the screen... But if one has to be singled out probably the best choice would be the 1939 version of "The Hound of the Baskervilles," the most famous of all Conan Doyle's long novels and the film that introduced Basil Rathbone in the part of Sherlock Holmes...
Although no less a critic than Graham Greene found Rathbone unacceptable, complaining of his good humor and general air of refreshing health, the tall, thin British born actor is still the man most people associate with the role... He played in 14 Holmes movies between 1939 and 1946, two "A" productions and twelve double features...
Set in the correct period, "The Hound of the Baskervilles" follows Conan Doyle closely including only one scene, a séance, not in the original story... Its opening sequence on a deserted moor with a man running in terror from the unseen beast and its climax with Holmes going out alone into the foggy night to track down the "Hell Hound" really catches the suspense and mystery of Conan Doyle's story...
The film is most impressive when it convincingly sketches in the streets and fashions of Edwardian London, a remarkable achievement when one considers that recreation of London and English settings has not been one of Hollywood's strongest points over the years...
The final curtain line makes it difficult to believe that the film was made in 1939 with all the restrictions and censorship of that period... References to Holmes' drug taking have rarely if ever been made in Holmes movies but in "The Hound of the Baskervilles" the great detective stalks out of the room calling to his ever faithful companion, "The needle, Watson, the needle."

First things first: Yes, Thinking XXX features adult film stars. No, the HBO production is not a porno. Nor does it include any clips. The documentary instead offers an introduction to the biggest names in the business, like Gina Lynn and Lukas Ridgeston. For his book, XXX - 30 Porn-Star Portraits, celebrity photographer Timothy Greenfield-Saunders shot the stars both clothed and unclothed. In the film, they talk about their work while getting their hair and make-up done, posing for pictures, playing with their pets, etc. They're presented as real people rather than actors (which just may destroy the fantasy for some fans). In the print edition, 15 writers, including author Nancy Friday, musician Lou Reed, and filmmaker John Waters, contribute their thoughts on pornography. They also appear on screen (fully clothed, of course). Some are quite critical. The biggest revelation isn't the nude bodies, readily available via videos and calendars, but what they have to say. Unlike Star 80 or Inside Deep Throat, there are no horror stories about physical or verbal abuse, but the talk is still frank and uncensored. Sean Michaels, for instance, opens up about race, while Chad Hunt discusses homosexuality. Interestingly, cover model Jenna Jameson doesn't utter a single word, possibly because she has already told her life story in the bestselling autobiography How to Make Love Like a Porn Star. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description

Customer Reviews:
Mindless Spin. .......2007-03-18
This is a perfect portrait of the way in which our society accepts practically everything from anybody. Personally, I don't have any problems with pornography and I never really have, but I found the rah rah take on the business to be rather offensive. The porn stars profiled here are celebrities and their interviews portray only a kindly spin on the industry as a whole. There is no interlocutor voice so the narrative's angle is entirely positive. In America, people are free to make lifestyle choices and that's what makes it such a great country. However, we should be honest, as for every choice we make there are unanticipated consequences. The film avoids this truth and I found such salesmanship to be rather sad.
This video showcases the great morass that is political correctness. John Waters and Gore Vidal are both commentators who provide their opinions about porn, and they make a point of saying that they don't like the straight variety. Waters compares straight condomless sex to being a snuff film (what of barebacking among gays?) and Vidal compares it to the rape of the Sabine women. Of course, these two are rather biased commentators but political correctness apparently prevents us from pointing such things out nowadays. These two icons should tolerate heterosexual diversity and not imply that the love of female breasts is not due to Americans being an infantilized population. Also, female porn stars being self-actualized successes in this world is a concept mutually exclusive with their being exploited and demeaned by men.
Is it an industry?.......2006-09-13
I guess the interviews on the DVD prove it is and that sex for the majority of the participants in the industry is a job to be performed well. I actually felt sorry for the men - envious of their 'size', but sorry for them in their chosen profession as they seem so poorly remunerated.
There are naked bodies all over the place, but no sex and that makes this particular DVD all the more authentic. The theme of a photographer creating a book of nudes and essays is not new, the sheer number of naked bodies scanned in detail by the movie cameras make this a good piece of entertainment as well as informative. The bonus bits and pieces make the few dollars well worth spending.
A revealing look at Adult Artist.......2006-06-26
What happens when you have a knockout body, you are a narcissistic exhibitionist who requires all the attention on yourself, you most likely become an Adult Artist and make adult movies, doing the nasty for all the world to see. This HBO made for tv movie gives you some insight to how the Adult superstars think, act and relate their life experiences candidly to the viewer. If you are an art student, the nudity probably won't offend you, but if you don't like nudity, don't watch, because there is plenty of it in this dvd, male & female. The bonus section is very good too. If you are curious about the adult film industry, this makes for good watching.
A "naked" look.......2006-06-26
I felt that this was a wonderful film, as we are presented with a naked look at these nude stars. The background discussion about the porn industry was very inlightening, and it told some interesting stories from the horses mouth. Yes there are some tragic tales, but some of the stores are far from tragic. The key thing (I think) is that it is not some activist (from either side of the fence) talking about hoor what the industry is doing to these "poor girls" but we get to hear the views and opinions directly from the ladies who both love the industry as well as feel trapped by it.
It's about time this came out on dvd.......2006-01-29
I saw this way back on HBO and I was amused that they showed full nudity. This photographer is taking pictures of adult porn stars both male and female, they take the pictures at home at a friends house, at work or the gym. Through the whole documentary while their taking the picture they are talking about the whole porn industry the whole life style.

almost 5 stars.......2006-06-07
I've seen Ian everytime he's been in Cleveland since 1972.
That being said, this is perhaps his best live/DVD/VHS concert ever. Unless they unearth a video with Mick Ronson, this is it!
Ian ain't about flash, smoke pots, and fire, his songs are the reason people go to see him.
With a set that includes songs from LP 1 (R & R Queen/ Mott The Hoople) to his last studio LP (Dead Man Walking/Rant),he touches all bases.
With a crack line-up which includes Andy York and MICK RALPHS!!, they tear up a slew of classics and obscure songs---obscure only if you're a newbie to his music
Highlights--Dudes--Ian's joined onstage by his kids Tracie (what a Hottie) and Jesse
Michael Picasso--ode to Ronson
Roll Away the Stone--another appearence by Tracie
Memphis--because Ian screws up and they restart the song in true Mott The Hoople fashion
The only downer on this is the camera placement. Most everything is shot from viewer left/stage right---up and down to center stage.
This is why it gets 4 stars.
Good interview with Ian also, although a translator might be in order--lol---he's so British
New LP on the way---hopefully by September
"Rock and Roll's a loser's game/ it mesmerizes and I can't Explain...".......2006-06-06
Wow...all the other reviewers here sound like they've been to the Cameron Crowe school of adjectives. Ok, truth is, I have Ian with Ronno and the "Welcome To The Club" band, so I'm in no great rush to hear his songs mangled by JC Mellonhead's guitarist. But Ralpher is on here fairly prominently, so, until IH releases stuff that he did PRE-MTV....like I said, I will wind up buying this. 6/20 - it arrived yesterday. It's wonderful to see and hear Ralpher again - and, in truth, the price you pay for this thing is justified, just to watch/hear Mick Ralphs actually play the immortal riff that IS All The Young Dudes." And Tracy is a stone HOTTIE, but somebody needs to stick a sock in that brat from "Def Leppard" & Brian May's mouths, and....oh, you know, I'm sorry ; I've said it all before: stick to pre- "Welcome To The Club" stuff.
Awesome.......2006-05-26
Wow. Great DVD. Ian's looking great. It's so much fun to see these guys up there playing a mix of old and new stuff. The band sounds great and look like they're having a lot of fun, too. This is true rock and roll.
Just Another Review.......2006-01-14
Ian's back. So am I.I won't review every song this time, nor write about me.About the sound and picture quality, I'm not that knowledgeable. The picture seems very clear at times and not so at others. I think this is done purposely, sought of like what Pearl Jam did with their dvd.The sound is great. In the past I've owned many bootleg tapes, some with very poor quality, so I think all these dvd concerts are fantastic. Including this one. There are a lot of different songs on this dvd than the last one, and no strings, of course.I loved Knees of my Heart. Ian re-tools Irene Wilde and it's great to hear a song you know slightly different. That's what makes a live performance special.Ian does The Truth,The Whole Truth... And I don't think I've ever heard this live before but I love this song and is the main reason I bought this dvd.Andy York really shows his skills here and through out the dvd. With good camera angles and close ups you get a good look at his playing.Fantastic!Ian also brings back Mick Ralphs for this one. He's looking a little old but gets off a few blistering leads himself, to show he can still play.A few more different songs Ian does are Roll Away The Stone, Cleveland Rocks and Standing In My Light. He also goes way back and breaks out The Journey.Awesome! Then for the finale he does All The Way... with special guests Brian May and Joe Elliot. That's alot of talent on the stage. Great show. Ian does the ballads. Ian rocks.Ian delivers.

This celebration of Beach Boys guiding light Brian Wilson, recorded in March 2001 at New York's Radio City Music Hall, may be the best tribute concert ever. Wilson himself appears toward the end of the 90-minute show; he's game, but after decades of mental problems, he's not what he once was. It's his admirers who take the event to another level. Backed by the remarkable Wondermints, a diverse lineup (Ricky Martin, the Go-Go's, Billy Joel, Aimee Mann and Michael Penn, Wilson Phillips--with Brian's two daughters--and others) perform both obvious ("California Girls") and more obscure ("I Just Wasn't Made for These Times") Wilson material. And then there are Elton John ("God Only Knows"), Vince Gill ("The Warmth of the Sun"), Paul Simon ("Surfer Girl"), Heart's Wilson sisters ("Good Vibrations"), and Carly Simon, David Crosby, and songwriter Jimmy Webb ("In My Room"), who turn in performances that are, quite simply, among the greatest of their careers. Transcendent. --Sam Graham

Music sound is ok.......2007-05-12
The video is good,a lot of nice looking honeys, the music selection is good. However the sound is a little shakey....
Why not include the entire concert?.......2007-02-03
I went to the tribute concert in 2001. It was a tremendous experience and probably the most satisfying event I have ever been to. The concert was almost four hours due to the recording situation. The best part of the show was the Pet Sounds segment which the makers of this DVD have failed on. Pet Sounds was played in its entirety, between each song a different singer would come out. The idea that you knew what song was coming next but didn't know who would be singing it was totally unique. The most entertaining performances of that night are not on this DVD and were not on TV when this originally aired. That is unfortunate to all who were unable to be at the event. Perhaps as with most Beach Boy product, they will rerelease it over and over and keep adding material. I was so disappointed at the lack of respect for the Pet Sounds section that I didn't even buy the DVD yet. I'll wait for the eventual rerelease.
Great Music and Great Performances.......2006-11-17
I am amazed by the quality of this DVD. The Wondermints play on almost every song and are so in tune with the music. Vince Gill does wonderfully on "the Warmth of The Sun" and Surf's Up". His very high range does full justice to these songs. Elton John, Jimmy Webb, Darius Rucker, Matthew Sweet, Mann and Penn, Wilson Sisters and Jubilant Stykes, David Crosby and Wilson Phillips all do justice to Brian's music. The Boy's Choir of Harlem is an added feature. The last few songs are with Brian. He and the Wondermints are glorious.
This is my favorite music DVD. The sound recording and filming are top notch. I wish it were available as a CD too.
A must for Brian and Beach Boys fans.......2005-10-24
Without question, one of the most entertaining events of all time. It is amazing to see all of the great music industry talents who participated in this tribute to Brian Wilson.
A special evening for Brian Wilson.......2005-09-27
For lovers of Brian Wilson and his music this is a marvelous show. So many special stars performed his music that it was a show that made you sit on the edge of your seat. For lovers also of Elton John, Paul Simon, Carly Simon, it also was amazing to see them harmonizing his songs.

Anthony Mann made some of the greatest Westerns of the 1950s, all in partnership with James Stewart. Perhaps needing to prove himself as his own man, in 1957 Mann dropped out of Night Passage to do this film. It's a rather schematic character study about a lawman-turned-bounty-hunter (Henry Fonda) who undertakes the professional shaping-up of an effete young sheriff (Anthony Perkins) too tentative to police the streets of his town. Those streets are compositionally present right outside the oversize window of the office where Perkins undergoes a lot of his soul-searching and arguments with Fonda. That's typical of the film--scrupulously designed, yet abstract to the point of dramatic aridity. The VistaVision black-and-white of cameraman Loyal Griggs (Oscar®-winner for Shane) is at once stark and glossy. Fonda's own reclamation as a social being is accomplished by way of a not-very-interesting subplot involving Betsy Palmer and a half-breed child played by Michel Ray. --Richard T. Jameson
Customer Reviews:
Henry Fonda in THE TIN STAR.......2007-05-13
It has so long since I saw this great western. Lost to TV for many years I was delighted to see it re mastered and put out on DVD. It did not disappoint. Great story . Great acting and the quality is first rate. A must for collectors of classic westerns.
Review of "The Tin Star".......2007-05-12
This is another great Anthony Mann directed western minus Jimmy Stewart. Henry Fonda does an outstanding job playing the wise and experienced former lawman turned bounty hunter. He passes his wisdom onto the green but very maleable "rookie" Sheriff played by Anthony Perkins (Good job by him too!). I loved the story and the action scenes. Highly Recommended! Pass the popcorn!
"I noticed you're wearing your guns too low.".......2007-03-26
Anthony Mann trademarked film with Henry Fonda as a former lawman turned bounty hunter trying to escape his past, and Anthony Perkins as a brash, overly talkative deputy-turned-Sheriff with a problematic local bully, played by a loudmouth cowardly backshooting Neville Brand, who is at the core of most of the problems in this small western town.
The formula is alive and well here with Fonda mentoring to the young Sheriff and finding a beautiful and sympathetic widow, Betsy Palmer, to take him in. The drama builds predictably but satisfactorily to the anticipated and inevitable showdown which is not to be missed. High watchability factor, its a classic.
The black and white DVD is a very good restoration and 5.1 remixing that is much better than I expected. Sadly there are no other extras or liner notes. 5 Badges
Another Great Anthony Mann Western.......2007-03-21
Anthony Mann was known for the great hardbitten Westerns he made with frequent collaborator James Stewart, such as The Naked Spur, Winchester '73, The Man From Laramie, and others. But he did make one Western with Stewart's best friend and another Western movie stalwart, the great Henry Fonda.
Fonda comes into a small town with an outlaw dead over a saddle. He's a bounty hunter, formerly a lawman who has become cynical with life and justice, and prefers the pay and independence of bounty hunting to being a town marshal. The town has a young and very inexperienced sheriff, played by Anthony Perkins, who is struggling to hold the town together as a bigoted bully played by Neville Brand tries to force his way into the sheriff's office. Fonda takes a liking to Perkins, and tries to show him the tricks of the trade. When two half-breed brothers kill the town doctor, events spiral out of control.
The Tin Star is full of wonderful performances, from Fonda who sees in the idealistic Perkins the younger man he used to be and learns to love again thanks to Betsy Palmer, who plays a widow who has a half-breed son; to Perkins, who hits the right notes as someone who'll make a fine lawman if his dumb mistakes don't kill him first, and Brand as a menacing, hateful brute who runs over as many people as he can. John McIntire (another frequent Mann collaborator) is also great as the town doctor.
This is an all-time classic. Don't miss it.
As classic as you can get!.......2006-11-09
The contribution made by Henry Fonda to classic Westerns is incredible : he made his point early with "The Oxbow Incident," his potent presence in "Drums Along the Mohawk"... He was excellent as Wyatt Earp in "My Darling Clementine," even better as the stubborn, mistaken lieutenant-colonel in "Fort Apache " a legendary gunman in "Warlock" and the hardened gunfighter-tutor in Anthony Mann's "The Tin Star."
Fonda plays a solitary-bounty hunter ("I'm not the law. I work inside it for money!") who had once been a sheriff, and who had given up the badge in disgust of the shameful way he had been treated by the citizens in a decisive tragic moment of his life--for which he lost his wife and son...
Fonda is quiet, sure, polite, sincere and appealing... Teaching Michael Ray, it was clear that he knew not only his guns but human nature... He is human, kind, anxious, worry and tender with the young boy...
Anthony Perkins is attractive in his doubts about taking action or decision... He is naïve and innocent, also incompetent for the job of an officer responsible for law and order... He always looks to Fonda for leadership, but he is eager to be a firm sheriff...
The conversation between Fonda and Perkins are the heart of the movie, which deals more with character than Gunplay: "You got to keep cool and have absolute confidence. You lack confidence." "A decent man does not want to kill. But if you're gonna shoot, you shoot to kill." "Study men. A gun is only a tool. You can master a gun if you got the knack. Harder to learn man."
The film had racism: When Bogardus kills the Indian, in the back, outside the saloon, he says: "No sheriff will disarm a white man for shooting a mingy Indian. You, an Injun lover?"
Betsy Palmer plays Nona Mayfield, a woman compelled to live outside the town because she married an Indian: "I'm just so used to everybody hating Indians."
The film had also intuition and humor:
- Kip Mayfield to Fonda: "Don't I look like a sheriff?" And Fonda replying: "You look more like a sheriff than the sheriff does."
Abbe Pickett, after being a father for eleven girls and now to a boy, asks: "You sure it ain't another girl?" and the doc replies: "Well, I hope I'm not too old to know the difference."
John McIntire is fine as the old doc whose big dream was: "I wish you two to get together."
Neville Brand enjoys oppressing, intimidating and persecuting...
Anthony Mann's "The Tin Star" is strong on location work, tense, realistic, technically competent... The film had dusty action, and a picturesque old town with its bank, hotel, saloon, jail, hanging tree and all the cowardly citizens turned out to watch...
With elements of "Shane," and "High Noon," the film is a very good Western, 'as classic as you can get.'

The Legendary Battle Continues In Smaller Form...........2006-02-07
For those of you who've not seen Underworld, not just on PSP but on dvd also, you're missing out on a terribly good movie. Not only does this movie have style , but it also has some of the best action sequences in a vampire movie, as well as one of the best storylines, which is sometimes hard to find in a vampire movie. This movie looks just as sleek and sexy in mini form, as does Kate Beckinsale. So please, do yourself a favor and get this movie for your PSP. This may well be your favorite UMD, I know it's mine. Hope this helps. Enjoy!

Great DVD of Rock's Greatest Unknown Superstar.......2006-01-09
An excellent DVD of Ian Hunter performing live in Oslo in 2002 with a 17-piece string orchestra. Not surprisingly, the presence of the strings led to a ballad-heavy set list, though even some rockers (e.g., All the Way From Memphis) are rearranged for strings.
While I think Hunter is generally at his best when rocking out, I do enjoy his crooning as well. The emphasis on ballads led him to dust off a really old Mott the Hoople favorite: Waterlow. I've never heard or seen this performed live, and this performance reinforces strongly my opinion that this is one of the best songs Hunter has ever written. Even more surprising than this pleasant treat, however, is the performance of "Michael Picasso," Hunter's tribute to his old bandmate, Mick Ronson. I've always been lukewarm to that song, however, Hunter's heartfelt performance on this DVD makes this perhaps the highlight of the disc.
Hunter is definitely in the twilight of his outstanding career (the amazing accomplishment of his most recent studio outing, "Rant," notwithstanding), and Hunter's stage persona is beginning to seem less like "Rock 'n Roll Superstar" and more like "Rock Elder Statesman." Most of the swagger is gone, and is replaced by an older, wiser confidence, and perhaps even a sense of gratitude and humility. The concert's closer, "Saturday Gigs," was once Hunter's farewell to his Mott bandmates, but now seems transformed into a thank you to his fans.
For a long-time fan like myself, this is a wonderfully recorded testament of the greatness that is Ian Hunter live. For the Ian Hunter novice, however, I'd suggest starting off with "Welcome to the Club" instead.
Great footage of Ian.......2006-01-03
I would fully recommend this DVD to Ian Hunter fans. The technical quality of the DVD is excellent and so is the performance of Hunter and the band. A wide range of material is covered here, and some of the songs are quite new. Some of the highlights for me include "Twisted Steel", a song Hunter wrote in response to September 11th, "I wish I was your mother", and "Irene Wilde". The DVD also includes an interview with Hunter and 3 bonus tracks, one of which is "Roll away the Stone", another Mott favorite of mine. It's nice to see this man is still growing and progressing as an artist.
A Very Special night!.......2005-06-19
Ian Hunter has long been one of rock n rolls unsung heroes. The quality of this live performance makes this in my eyes, one of the greatest live rock recordings in recent memory. Ian Hunter has long been called the british Bob Dylan, and with good reason. He has contantly written quality material, and now for the first time is captured live on DVD for all to enjoy, complete with a full orchestra. His british accent adds an emotional flavor to his ballads that should not be missed. One listen to "Ships" and "Irene Wilde", and his tribute to Mick Ronson, are nothing short of gems. Hunter rocks as well, on tunes like "All The Young Dudes", "Once Bitten Twice Shy", and "All The Way From Memphis". The sound and picture quality is fantastic. One can see that lots of care and work went into this production, and in my opinion, is Ian Hunters greatest live performance. The companion CD is the exact show that is on this fantatic DVD. I highly recommend both DVD and CD to one and all, who are fans of Ian, or to those who are waiting to become fans. A truly monumental effort.
Old Rockers Never Die.......2005-04-21
Can't say enough good things about the performances on 'Strings Attached.' Ian and his band are in prime form and the addition of the string section lends a wonderful nuance and depth to the ballads, especially the Mick Ronson tribute "Michael Picasso". Not the usual bathetic 'rock with strings' mashup but rather a heartfelt, passionate hybrid that shines a new light on one of rocks's great true believers. The sound quality is great throughout and the stoked Oslo crowd adds to the excitement. Obviously I'm a big fan and you will be too after checking this out.
A Don't MISS DVD!!.......2005-04-09
If you only think of Ian Hunter as the front man for Mott The Hoople, you will miss the charm of this amazing performance. Yes, "All The Young Dudes," "Once Bitten, Twice Shy," and the other Dudes hits are here but the real treasures are "Ships (that pass in the night)" (Yes -- The Barry Manilow Hit!), "Irene Wilde" (my favorite Mott hit) and "A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square" (I wanted to do one for "me Mum" he says). The lighting is striking, the band is strong and the string section is moving. I own thousands of roots music DVDs and videos and this is my current favorite by a long shot. Don't miss it!
