This 1962 version of The Day of the Triffids has been a TV staple for many years, more probably because of a lasting affection for John Wyndham's original novel than any high regard for the film itself. The premise--a meteor shower blinds almost all of humanity, just as a space-borne strain of ambulatory killer plants begins to proliferate--is so strong that it's easy to overlook the frankly messy realization of it. The film opens well, sticking close to the book, as Howard Keel awakens in a London hospital after an eye operation and takes off the bandages to discover that he can see but most of the rest of the population can't. There are unsettling, effective bits with a plane literally flying blind and the beginnings of panic among the fumbling survivors, and one good Triffid encounter in a fog.
Then the film is strangely compelled to stray all over the map, with trips to France and Spain that have no discernible purpose. Director Steve Sekely's original cut was adjudged so disastrous that an uncredited Freddie Francis was brought in to shoot a whole new subplot, featuring Keiron Moore and Janette Scott in a vine-besieged lighthouse, to thread through the old footage. The results are less satisfying than the later BBC serial adaptation, but it still has some irresistible end-of-the-world and killer-plant material. --Kim Newman
Description
The Triffids are coming! The Triffids are killing! A shower of meteorites produces a glow that blinds anyone that looks at it. As it was such a beautiful sight, most people were watching, and as a consequence, 99% of the population go blind. This chaos results in the escape of some Triffids: experimental plants that are capable of moving themselves around and attacking people.

This version from Cheezy.... missing audio ?.......2007-06-06
Note: I really liked this movie as a kid ..and i still love it now...but
I bought the Day of the Triffids, the version put out by a company called cheezy or something....Hey the movie looks great compared to other version, but the last 20 minutes there is no audio, i dont know if its only my copy that has the problem, but i was really dissapointed. If anybody else had that audio problem, please leave me a comment.
crude, but this is the stuff of memories.......2007-05-29
I saw this as a memento to childhood delight, as I vividly recall seeing it with my best pal when it came out. There are wonderful images in it, of the greasy, mysteriously menacing plants striking blind beauties while society falls apart around them.
Of course, if your standard is not to re-live a wonderful time as a child in a cinema of screaming and laughing children, this film will probably do very little for you. Viewed more cooly from my vantage as a middle-aged film buff, it is pretty weak as sci-fi. Little is explained - the meteors somehow cause both blindness and a bizarre transformation in the triffids - and after the chaos of a society falling apart, the plot takes weird twists. One group that the narrative follows forms a kind of family and inexplicably heads to southern europe, where after much danger they escape. The other actors are a troubled couple of scientists, who miraculously discover that salt water dissolves the triffids after much failed study, again inexplicably. And the effects! Very bad compared to what is available today.
Recommended for purposes of nostalgia only, unless you are a connoisseur of clunky monster flicks over lots of beer.
The Horror Classic "Day Of The Triffids" is ownworthy!.......2007-04-08
ok ive Just watched "day of the triffids" and it has been reformatted into anamorphic widescreen, but sadly they left in some of the graininess of the origional film. but to see this classic remastered and even with the few graphical errors, this IS, and always will be, a True Classic! until someone Remakes this movie and doesn't blow it! *waggles finger at tom cruse in war of the worlds* but overall this movie is for the fans of the oldies and the people whom saw this movie in theaters (yes you know who you are) and its worth every cent to go on an adventure like this. truly a rare gem! *a meteor shower blinds most of the humans on earth, leaving the few survivors to fend off the horrific Triffids! before Humanity os destroyed* not too many of the oldies are worth owning but, if you dont own this or like it if i was you i would avoid Golden Oldies like this and if your only happy with Tons of Extras and perfect imagry then this might not be to your liking at this point i suggest renting it to be sure its your thing.
A great movie to watch .......2007-03-27
This is a movie that I enjoyed very much. I had seeing this movie when I was younger but was very hard to find until it came out on vhs and dvd.
I found the fact that it could happen to anyone who is suckered into watching some celestial show and wake up the next day with burned out eye retinas causing permanent blindness.
Not only is the person blind, but the whole world is blind except for the people who did not watch the meteorite shower. Plants, called Triffids become active and unroot themselves and go killing and eating people. Now that is cool. Planes, ships, trains crashing because their pilots or conductors has become blind. A very good movie to watch. Good story and performance.
This is the WRONG "Day of the Triffids". . . .......2007-02-17
Compared to the great 1981 version of the Day of the Triffids, this Howard Keel version is really pathetic.
The 1981 version for some crazy reason has not been made available for the USA. We need it! It is much closer to the great book by John Wyndham. It seems to me when it was first released it was shown both on USA and British TV.
The 1981 version was produced by David Maloney and starred John Duttine and Emma Relph. It really gives you the creeps in the same way the greatest horror movies of aliens wiping us out, such as 'Body Snatchers,' has you looking over your shoulder for weeks afterward. But this 1962, badly reproduced hollywood version? Forget about it.

Customer Reviews:
An unchanging classic.......2007-04-30
I saw this film during the single week that it remained on the bill of one of the theaters in my old neighborhood, the old Victoria. It was on the bottom half of a double bill with some western or Joan Crawford tearjerker that my parents wanted to see. I was nine years old.
In my immature judgement, it seemed to me to be the most blatant piece of pietistic claptrap and balderdash I had ever seen on any screen--and that was after being exposed to the duck-and-cover extravaganzas regularly screened at Marshall School, the elementary school that sat just one block beyond the old Victoria.
It has turned up at odd hours of the night and early morning on local television stations about once a decade since that time.
I stumbled across this DVD on the shelves of a local video rental shop. I gave it a try, just to compare my current critical stance with that of my younger self. With a few more years of life experience behind me and five or more viewings scattered across half a century, I can now say that "The Red Planet Mars" is the most blatant piece of low budget, lowbrow, low aiming, pietistic claptrap and balderdash I have ever seen on any screen.
The classics remain ever true to themselves.
COLD WAR CHILDHOOD REVISITED.......2007-02-19
Just by chance,I caught most of"RedPlanet Mars" oncable.it was a scary experience, mostly because the portrayalof unreasoniing panic by the societies shown seemed very much the way i elieve people would act. I recall vividly howit was to be a childin the 1950's, when any car backfire or any trash-burning made people think it had happened; the Soviets were attacking, and World War 3 was beginning.
"RedPlanet Mars" accidentally or intentionally anti-Soviet propaganda, and it is effective cinema in that respect. As II watched this film,I was thinking how youngpeter Graves was in thismovie -and at about the same time his brother, James arness, was playing the alien monster in "The Thing."
Great movie, and the dvd is crisp and clear. This is a must for any Science fiction film collection.
AKA message from Mars.......2007-01-02
The movie was made in a time when everyone was into the red scare. A nuclear family has the means and knowledge to build a device (from public domain information) to transmit to a 1952 version of Mars.
Using a new hydrogen technology Chris Cronyn (Peter Graves) sends a message to Mars. A message appears to return. The content disrupts economics and supports the concept of theocracies over democracies (Iran is a theocracy). However it is not so much the messages that catch your eye, as the 1950's stereotypes. The nuclear family is just missing the family dog. The wife (Andrea King) even thought standing beside her husband is more behind him and is scared of her own shadow. The commies are ruthless and dumb. The president (this is before we started to degrade presidents) is fair and benign. I can go on but you get the idea. Now it is amusing to watch in retrospect. But if any of these people existed today it would be scary.
Peter Graves gets to play the good guy "look to the future" father.
Marvin Miller (Arjenian) the confused bad guy (typical 50's commie) can bee seen again as Michael Anthony in the 1955 TV series "Millionaire, The"
The Lord lives on mars.......2006-12-08
An interesting mix of scifi and religion, along the lines of "The next Voice You Hear". I saw this film recently on video. A radio transmission is received from Mars, supposedly being the voice of God. if I remember it correctly, this results in the eastern block getting religion and the overthrow of Communism. This movie is fascinating because it is a reversal of usual scifi fare, even during the 1950s. Usually, these films portray America as the country which needs talking to, and Americans being the people who need to change. This movie is very pro-American and pro-traditional Judeo/Christian values. In essence, the cold war (which was revving up in 1952) is won through the intercession of God him/herself. HEAVY DUTY STUFF, DUDE!!!
God Intervenes..........2006-09-02
A Sci-fi movie that moves you. Mankind will destroy itself, without some messages from God! Will WE LISTEN???

The world deadliest gunfighter! The worlds most diabolical killer! Dracula travels to the American West, intent on making a beautiful ranch owner his next victim. Her fiance, the outlaw Billy the Kid, finds out about it and rushes to save her. A great Cheezy Flick - and one we are sure you will love as much as we did!
Customer Reviews:
very bad edition.......2007-06-16
Regardless of what one may think of this film ,it deserves to be decently presented on dvd .Cheezy Flicks does not help the cause of film restoration with this type of dvd transfer .The one star is for the product not for the film .Cheezy Fick 's edition of Corman's Atlas in Pan and scan was a disaster too. They of course are not alone in that line .
So bad it's good.......2006-10-04
This film is a true "Le Bad Cinema" treasure. My family still uses bits of dialogue from the movie. Watching Dracula lift up and stumble carrying out that larger-than-he-is blond bimbo is at once hilarious and pathetic. You can't help feeling sorry for the poor, elderly actor who probably had to take whatever work he could get at that point. This isn't a film to take seriously at all, but one that invites snide remarks all the way through.

Entombed for eons - turned to stone - seeking women, women, women! - In the excavation site scientists uncover the body of a gladiator from the ruins of Pompeii, a stone-encrusted body is found with a bronze medallion bearing a strange Etruscan inscription. Carlo Fiorillo, Italian archaeologist, speculates the robust body may hold some life; medical researcher Paul Mallon scoffs at the idea. But people left alone with the seemingly petrified "faceless man" keep dying of crushed skulls; and Paul's artist fiancée Tina starts having strange visions...

Entombed for eons - turned to stone - seeking women, women, women! .......2005-11-29
What can be said about Curse of the Faceless Man (1958) that hasn't already been said? Apparently a lot, since I be the first to review it on the Amazon website...written by Jerome Bixby (It! The Terror from Beyond Space, Fantastic Voyage) and directed by schlockmeister extraordinaire Edward L. Cahn (The She-Creature, Dragstrip Girl, Invasion of the Saucer Men), the film stars Richard Anderson, whom most in my generation would recognize as Oscar Goldman from the mid 70s television series "The Six Million Dollar Man" (you're doing that bionic sound effect in your head right now, aren't you? Me too...). Also appearing is Elaine Edwards (Guns, Girls, and Gangsters, The Bat), Adele Mara (Sands of Iwo Jima, The Black Whip), Luis Van Rooten (The Big Clock, Boston Blackie's Chinese Venture), Felix Locher (Hell Ship Mutiny, Frankenstein's Daughter), Jan Arvan (The Sign of Zorro, The Poseidon Adventure), and Gar Moore (Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff).
As the movie begins we see a miniature volcano spewing forth its molten, steamy goodness over a miniature city, supposedly representing a reenactment of Mount Vesuvius destroying the city of Pompeii in 79 A.D., according to the narrator...well, that was kinda fun...now we're in the present, and we see some Giuseppe rooting around on an excavation site. He uncovers a golden jewel box along with man-sized, man shaped, white stone figure (actually, it looks like a man covered in lumpy, crusty gravy). Within the jewel box are some shiny trinkets, along with a bronze medallion sporting a curse of sorts. The find is taken to the museum (not before someone dies mysteriously), run by Dr. Carlo Fiorillo (Rooten) and his hotchie mama daughter Maria (Mara). Dr. Fiorillo calls in his friend, Oscar Goldman ...er, I mean Dr. Paul Mallon (Anderson), to do a preliminary investigation of the stone cold corpse. Mallon is skeptical about the curse mumbo jumbo, that is until he learns his fiancée Tina Enright (Edwards), who's an artist, has had some sort of dream about the events that transpired thus far, including the death I spoke of earlier. Anyway, seems the 2,000 year old, lumpy mashed potato man is alive, and he's got a hankering to go courtin'...and Oscar Goldman's...er, I mean Paul's squeeze seems to fit the bill...on the flipside, Tina finds herself inexplicably drawn to the creature, to which she sneaks into the museum after dark, awakening the beast, and we witness its awesoma power, particularly in smashing through cheap, balsa wood doors, before returning back to immobility. Some other stuff happens, we visit a place called `The Cove of the Blind Fisherman', the scientists perform various tests, and we finally learn that the creature has a name, along with its connection with Tina...all of which leads up to a not so climatic finish (at this point I would have taken any kind of ending).
I think I would have liked this movie better if it hadn't been so exceedingly boring. The science is exceptionally shoddy, the characters plain and lifeless (I never believed for a second Anderson was supposed to be some kind of doctor), performances drab, and the dialog just all around goofy. Below is an example as the men try to wrap their minds around the fact the stony individual is actually alive and has intent...
Inspector: It isn't possible...it has no face, no eyes, and yet it knows where to go.
Dr. Fiorillo: It can only be instinct, something that has survived from long ago to guide it, the way the blind are sometimes guided.
Inspector: But still, it cannot be alive!
Paul: Not the way we know life.
Dr. Fiorillo: It is not dead, as we know death.
What a brain trust...now imagine sitting through 66 minutes of this mind numbing hogwash. I could have dealt with a lot of the inherent faults of this movie if only had the creature been something worth hanging around for, but instead, this Mummy retread just ends up sucking wind. Visualize a man whose entire body is covered in a cast, and then try to picture him as a creature chasing you down the street. You'd probably be able to get away fairly easily, that is unless you're a clumsy clod or prone to bouts of paralyzing fear caused by the most innocuous sights (both of which seemed to be the case in this film). Even at full speed the creature, at best, could manage to move like that of an 80-year-old man shuffling around in his house slippers. The one element that annoyed me more than anything with regards to this movie was the overly expository narration, inserted at various points because either the filmmakers thought their telling of the story not clear enough, or felt the audience would not intelligent enough to pick up on the obvious (I'm leaning towards the latter given condescension is considered an artform in Hollywood). Thing is, the kind of narration present here would have fit a crime/drama type movie, but certainly not a horror film. Also, the story was about as clumsy as the creature...curses, broaches, medallions, it was often difficult to figure out what was supposed to be driving what, and the explanation near the end as for the reasoning why the creature only moved at certain times was about as hokey as one would expect, but certainly not an uncommon plot device in the 50s. I think there was an attempt to create a sense of pathos for the creature, as was somewhat common in the Universal creature features of the 30s and 40s, but it was never fully realized, so, in the end, you neither fear or emphasize with the beast. I did like some aspects about the movie...the women were very attractive, and the music was decent. The sets were okay and the film ran just over an hour (but it felt like two).
This is my first Cheezy Flicks Entertainment DVD, so I really wasn't sure what the quality would be like, but, in general, I found it to be better than expected. The full frame picture looks very clean and sharp and the audio came through very clearly. As far as extras, there are some rough looking previews for other Cheezy Flicks DVD releases like Horrors of the Black Museum (1959), The Headless Ghost (1959), Robot Monster (1953), and The Day of the Triffids (1962). Also included is four or five `Intermission' shorts, the kind theaters and drive-ins used to show to either impart information or tempt you to the snack bar. All in all I'll give two stars for the film, and one extra for Cheezy Flicks Entertainment and their better than average DVD release here.

Customer Reviews:
The other reviewers are correct- duplicates abound!.......2007-06-27
I actually ordered the entire Cheezy Trailers library from Netflix recently. Nearly every disc (with the exclusion of Cheezy Exploitation) has duplicate trailers on them...and some of the discs (including Horror Vol. 1 & 2, Scifi 1 and Fantasy) have duplicates of the same movie trailer on the same disc. Did these folks even watch what they were adding to their product?
While many of the trailers decent quality you just can't overlook the numerous dubbed from video trailers (complete with authentic scan lines and squiggles and sometimes static from crash edits).
On a positive note, you do get some interesting drive-in intermission reels on each disc which add to the variety (but once again, beware of duplicates).
I work in the horror business and love wonderful old trailers, but I would have to warn against spending your money on these discs...you're better off renting them if you can.
Worth checking out if you have a little bit of extra money.......2007-01-25
I had a fun time watching this dvd but I wasn't blown away by it. There's a good mix of trailers, spanning from the 1950's - 1980's, some of them were for movies I'd never heard of. As a previous reviewer noted, some of the trailers are repeated during the program (I counted 3.) The picture quality mostly looked like vhs. This is a good compilation to pick up if you have a little bit of extra money, nothing to go out of your way for though.
Great Content, Watch for Duplicates and VHS Transfers.......2006-12-30
Cheezy put together a really fun package here - but instead of trying to stretch their catalog between two volumes, might have been better off combining what they had into one uber volume for a slightly higher price ... or perhaps we're just spoiled by Synapse Films' great 42nd Street Forever and 42nd Street Forever, Vol 2: The Deuce products!
Content covers a lot of ground, from previews for great old b/w numbers like The Old Dark House, Curse of the Demon and The Tingler to 50s drive in spectaculars, to the lurid, blood-drenched titles that likely drew most of us in.
Be warned that Cheezy tries to stretch its library by duplicating some of the trailers on both volumes - sometimes within the same volume! (Humanoids from the Deep definitely appears twice on Volume 1), and some of the prints scream "fullscreen VHS", but this is largely counteracted by both the programs themselves and the extra cool additional trailers to be found under "Also From Cheezy Flicks" and "Intermission" from the main menu.
Stay Scared!!!

Customer Reviews:
"Trouble with you, Buck, you're over anxious...guess you ain't had no excitement since Abe Hibble axed his mother-in-law.".......2006-01-26
After watching the film The Vampire (1957), I thought something misleading with the title, specifically the fact there appeared to be no actual vampire in the story, at least none that I could see...oh, there was a monster type character, but his characteristics aligned him more towards another famous film monster of the past, one which I'll talk about later...written by Pat `Left' Fielder (The Monster That Challenged the World, "Baretta"), and directed by Paul Landres ("Studio 57", Last of the Badmen, "77 Sunset Strip"), the film features John Beal (The Cat and the Canary, Edge of Darkness), along with Coleen Gray (Kansas City Confidential, The Leech Woman), and Kenneth Tobey (The Thing From Another World, The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, It Came from Beneath the Sea). Also appearing is Lydia Reed ("The Real McCoys"), James Griffith (The Amazing Transparent Man), well known character actors, particularly to television viewers, Herb Vigran (Bedtime for Bonzo, "Gunsmoke"), and Dabbs Greer ("Gunsmoke", It! The Terror from Beyond Space, White Lightning).
Prior to that actual start of the film, there's a goofy bit of badly damaged footage with creepy sound effects blaring in the background, featuring a man in a lab coat with `Mad Doctor' printed on the breast pocket (just because your coat states you're a mad doctor doesn't make it true). Anyway, he goes into what's supposed to be a spooky, little spiel, one in which he comes off as a mix between Vincent Price and Charles Nelson Reilly (closer to the latter)...after a couple of minutes of this we kick into the film proper as we see a delivery boy dropping off some live animals in a box to a creepy looking house. No one seems to be home, so the boy enters, finds a sickly man, and runs off to get the local medical practitioner Dr. Paul Beecher (Beal). Paul makes the scene, and the man, an experimental scientist, croaks, but not before passing on some pills. Turns out the man was working on some sort of regression experiments with the intent to revert animal minds to a primitive state, the thought being that if we could make animals dumber, we could also make them smarter...or something like that. Well, Paul, who's prone to migraines, accidentally takes one of the pills (oops), which are highly addictive, and soon afterwards various townspeople begin dying of an mysterious ailment, a virus which cause capillary disintegration (this term is used a whole lot throughout the movie). Anyway, turns out this virus is being spread by some sort of maniac, one that the police, including Sheriff Buck Donnelly (Tobey), are unable to catch. As the bodies pile up, Paul comes to realize he's the monster, and begins pushing away those close to him, his nurse assistant (Gray), his daughter, etc., fearing they may become victims of his primitive, uncontrollable, throbbing urges during one of his spells (he vaguely remembers events that take place during his transformations). Eventually things come to a head, as the police close in and Paul tries to put an end to the madness.
After watching this film I couldn't help feel a little cheated...I mean, how can you have a movie called The Vampire and not have any, actual vampires? The creature Paul turned into was more akin to that of a Mr. Hyde character, given his brutish appearance, demeanor, and homicidal tendencies. The creature was certainly ugly, but didn't really exhibit the main feature which one would associate with a vampire, that being fangs (maybe I'm just too old school). The make up job was pretty hokey, as Paul in creature form looked more like a severely sunburned man with bad hair (I think the intent was to have him take on the facial features of a vampire bat, since that was the main extract in the pills). I didn't quite understand the overall purpose of the pills in that it seemed that maybe they were supposed to help keep Paul from turning into a beast, but then they also caused the initial transformation. Actually, the reasoning behind the experiments that generated the pills also seemed unclear. Why focus on regression within animals with the hope of being able to reverse the process and thereby make them smarter? Why not just forgo the regression part and work on the `smarter' part? Seems like a whole lot of extra work to me...overall the performances were decent, and Beal has a really excellent sequence as he's suffering withdrawals, desperately craving his monster pills. I was disappointed with Tobey's relatively bit part in the film, as I thought he was way under utilized. The direction was solid, but the main weakness here was the material, as it was kind of messy and brought about a bit more character development than needed in some areas (the bits with Paul and his daughter could have been removed without any loss to the story). And what was the point of that Henry Winston character, who was sensitive to light, brought in by the university to carry on the work started by the scientist who died at the beginning? The film seemed to go to great lengths to present him as an important character, only to drop him like a rock shortly after his arrival. The funniest part of the movie for me was the sequence when Paul convinced his nurse to break a date (with Tobey's character), so that she may spend the night watching Paul, as he feared if left unattended, he'd kill again. Subsequently the pair go out to a nightclub, have a number of drinks, and just as Paul is about to spill the beans to her about his condition, he gets called away for a medical emergency. Next we see Paul in a hospital operating room, preparing to perform surgery on a patient! Okay, first of all, I thought he was a general practitioner, not a qualified surgeon, but whatever...secondly, who in the world would agree to perform an operation just prior to having a number of alcoholic beverages? There's a lawsuit in there somewhere, maybe more than one...all in all this was a good effort that fell a little short, as there are some decent performances here, the direction handled well, but the main weakness for me was in the sometimes muddled and unnecessary aspects of the story.
The picture quality on this DVD release from Cheezy Flicks Entertainment, presented in fullscreen format, looks decent, albeit a little soft at times. As for the audio, I had no issues with it, as it came through clearly for me. There are a few extras including a handful of previews for films like Horrors of the Black Museum (1959), Robot Monster (1953), The Day of the Triffids (1962), and Baron Blood (1972), all titles which I believe are currently in the public domain, meaning no one studio owns the rights to them, so anyone can release them to DVD, or whatever format they wish. Also included are a handful of old timey intermission shorts, and a sort of hidden feature accessed by clicking on the `V' in the word vampire on the main menu. By doing this you'll bring up nearly eight minutes of 8mm footage of the film The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), which, by the way, is scheduled for a remake in 2006. Where they dug this archaic piece of footage up I'll never known, but it's of extremely poor quality, there's no audio, but it's there.
Cookieman108
If I learned anything from this film it's that you shouldn't take pills retrieved by your daughter from your coat without making sure they're the ones you actually want...oh yeah, I think I can go happily the rest of my life without ever hearing the phrases `cell deterioration' and `cellular disintegration' again, given their extensive usage in this movie.

This DVD is actually a DVD-R. I played it only first 20 minutes and stopped it, because of horrible digital noises.I bought other titles from this label and most of them are on the same condition.I don't recommend this and other products from this label.

Customer Reviews:
Not for the faint of heart.......2005-11-16
I rented this movie years ago. I fell for the "Banned in 26 countries" label that was on the box. It warns you about scenes of total barbarianism that will be difficult to watch. The only thing difficult was keeping myself from laughing most of the time.
A group of scientists are in the tropical rainforest when they stumble upon a couple of criminals on the run. (They do not know this, of course). Somehow they find themselves captured by a tribe living in the jungle and they are subjected to torture and violent death.
These "scenes" are for the most part pretty awfully shot. But if you need to know what is in this.......a tribe member eating a huge live larva, a guy getting part of his head chopped off, another becoming a permanent poster boy for birth control, and a woman who is hung by her breasts on a couple of steel hooks.
If this sort of thing is entertainment to you, go for it. It will come with the usual bad acting, awful music, and incredibly bad camerawork.
