4 out of 5 stars A good monster movie.......2007-04-04

"It Waits" begins with a group exploring a cave and unleashing the titular "It," which promptly kills them all (off screen). Fast forward a bit, and we meet Forest Ranger Danielle St. Claire (Cerina Vincent), who is the sole tenant of a Ranger station deep in the forest. Having survived a car accident that killed her friend, Danielle is trying to find solace in the bottle to assuage the guilt that she feels because she was the one driving. Her boyfriend arrives, and Danielle confesses her role in the accident to him. Before the night is over, though, the tower is attacked by an unseen creature that destroys the sole transportation from the tower, a Jeep, and sabotages the communications. Before long, the creature kills two campers and turns its attention to Danielle and her boyfriend.

This film is hard to assess. On the negative side, it is entirely predictable, so much so that I felt as if I had the script in hand and were reading ten pages ahead. The disparate aspects of the plot (i.e., Danielle's grief and the creature's murderous spree) do not mesh well or indeed much at all. There is also an attempt to link the creature to a vague, apparently Native American, mythology, but this attempt falls flat--very flat, in fact. Danielle comes upon someone who seems to know about the creature, lectures her, and provides her with something to read so that she can defeat the thing. As it happens, though, these elements play almost no role in the film's resolution, and they seem pointless as a result.

On the other hand, there are a great number of things that work well in "It Waits." Foremost among the positives is Cerina Vincent, who must carry a large part of the film since she is the only human on screen for long periods of time. The scenes with her boyfriend (Dominic Zamprogna) seem genuine, and both actors make their relationship thoroughly believable. Vincent's vulnerability and Zamprogna's support amply convey an implicit longstanding relationship and a back story that make the characters seem much more real. Their scenes are accompanied by a couple very nice songs (especially "Believe in Me" by Melanie Monroe, who was previously unknown to me).

Danielle's vulnerability early in the film contrasts nicely with her strength in the second half of the film. Determined to stop the creature, Danielle finds the strength to fight, but this strength is not so over-the-top that her past is forgotten.

The strengths of "It Waits" outweighed the flaws for me. The beautiful scenery, the masterful performance by Vincent, and the good, old-fashioned sense of suspense here made the eighty minutes enjoyable. As I write this, though, I am aware that there are several negative reviews here. I am not entirely sure why those who wrote the reviews were so unimpressed by the film, but I wonder whether they expected something more like most contemporary horror films. In trying to come up with a similar film, I kept thinking of Creature from the Black Lagoon. For those who enjoy that type of monster movie, "It Waits" should prove enjoyable.

3 out of 5 stars Good monster flick.......2006-11-06

I found it pretty good because of the setting and lead actress. Its always more tense when you can't really see what you are up against, and when you do you wish you hadn't!

1 out of 5 stars It lurks, it prowls...it reaks.......2006-11-05

It Waits is one of those modern day, low budget horror snooze fests that we've been getting a lot of lately, and it's abysmal from start to finish. Cerina Vincent (from Cabin Fever, whose large "attractions" are the only thing that'll keep your eyes on the screen) stars as an alcoholic forest ranger (yes, you read that right) who gets stalked by a murderous, blood thirsty creature (because there are no other kinds) from Native American mythology that makes short work of her boyfriend and a few hikers. Normally, under the right circumstances, I try to be understanding of a low budget horror flick of this type, but everything about it so bad from the wooden acting, creaky attempt at giving Vincent a weak backstory, and the poppy soft-rock is about as welcome here as a claw in the guts. The gore and makeup are halfway decent, but that's it. Beyond bad, avoid.

3 out of 5 stars The best "B" movie I've ever seen.......2006-10-30

I was expecting a totally laughfest and it turned out to not be so bad. You know it was predictable as most horror flicks are but was a fun hour and a half spent with my older teens. The special effects weren't bad either. Not so bad....

2 out of 5 stars 2 1/2.......2006-07-22

I never get tired of looking at Cerina Vincent. That alone earns it the two and a half star rating.

Beyond that, not much to be desired. On a down note, Cerina as sworn off doing nudity, and that's a damn shame.

Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno, stars of the late '70s, live-action television series The Incredible Hulk, cap a run of sporadic TV movies based on the old show with Death of the Incredible Hulk. The gloomy title says it all. Bixby's Dr. David Banner, spiritually exhausted after years of rage-induced transformations into a snarling, green monster, takes a last stab at finding a cure by posing as a retarded janitor in a government-funded research laboratory. His secret collaboration with a scientist (Philip Sterling) on "killing" the Hulk's genetic viability goes awry when a gorgeous foreign spy (Barbara Tarbuck) disrupts a crucial procedure and invites the wrath of brutal terrorists, the federal government, and, yes, the big man (Ferrigno) himself. With death chains rattling in the background, various ironies in the story become poignant: After years of isolation, Banner finds friendship and love just in time to risk it all for a lasting peace. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars The Big Guy.......2006-11-10

What can i say The Incredible Hulk one of the best all time Tv series
that makes the movies a must have.

2 out of 5 stars Not an Incredible finale.......2006-08-05

This made for T.V movie may pass an hour and a half if you have time to kill but other wise I wouldnt recomend seeking this title out on purpose. The whole thing is stale and cheesey but has a flow to it that doesnt bore you to tears, but it doesnt leave you feeling satasfied either.

12 years after the series Bana is working in a lab under a different name and he keeps breaking into the place at night to alter some other sceintists work, when the other guy busts him Bana tells him who he is and then they work together to find a cure but run into a bit of trouble along the way.

So much of the things that happen in this movie shouldve hit the cutting room floor, they where not needed and had nothing to do with what was needed to tell the plot. Nothign is beleivable, tho a series about a Dr Jeckyl & Mr Hide charactor may not be realistic either, but in this film i had a tough time suspending disbeleif and getting into Bana having a newly found girlfriend and the love scenes where just blurghh, things dont make sense like talkign about how someone is family after knowing them for 5 mins or someone put into a coma and having Bana sneak in to bring him out of it for absolutly no reason that is needed to tell this story that has a finale that doesnt require him what-so-ever.

Then the finale doesnt pay off either, infact, I think it was a stupid idea to call this the DEATH of the Hulk when all along you're waiting to see how they put an end to the Hulk... and the way its done left me with a raised eyebrow as they play some sad music like youre meant to shed a tear, but it doesnt work after such a lame effort to build up to something that shouldve gone off like a rocket but instead farted and hissed and conked out just leaving a stink behind.

4 out of 5 stars Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno do their final tag-team effort with the Hulk.......2006-05-07

"The Incredible Hulk" ran on CBS from 1978 to 1982, starring Bill Bixby as Dr. David Bruce Banner and body builder Lou Ferrigno as his giant green alter ego. The television series kept Banner on the run, while reporter Jack McGee (Jack Colvin) dogged his heels. Basically it was a set up similar to "The Fugitive," except every week at some point Banner would have to become the Hulk. The key line was so obvious they worked it into the opening credits when Banner warned the reporter: "Mr. McGee, don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry." Fans certainly did, even if they never read the Marvel comic books about ol' greenskin. When the television series went off the air NBC aired an animated version of "The Incredible Hulk" as part of its Saturday morning lineup that run from September 1982 to September 1985.

In 1988, Bixby, Ferrigno and Colvin returned for the first in a series of television movies, "The Incredible Hulk Returns." This was followed the next year by "The Trial of the Incredible Hulk," which ditched the reporter character and replaced him with another Marvel superhero, Daredevil (a.k.a. Matt Murdock). Then in 1989 we have what proved to be the last television movie of the Hulk, which makes sense when you look at the title of the film (there were rumors of a sequel, but Bixby's death in 1993 made that impossible). Bixby directed this television movie, so you have to think this is how he wanted to the series to end.

People think Banner is dead, so he is laying low, calling himself David Bellamy and working as a janitor at a high security research facility. David seems to be a bit slow, always forgetting his thermos and leaving by the wrong exit, but he has been there for several months and the guards are used to his slow ways. Of course this is just a pretense so that when everybody goes home he can sneak into the genetics lab. Ostensibly he is looking for a way to reverse what has happened to him and get rid of the Hulk, but he is also helping Dr. Ronald Pratt (Philip Sterling) with his research by correcting his mistakes. Pratt is trying to figure out who is helping him along and is surprised when he discovers it is the janitor. But he understands perfectly when he learns that David is the famous David Banner and agrees to help.

Meanwhile, there are evil foreigners who want to get their hands on Pratt's research and use it to create an army of perfect soldiers. Kasha (Andreas Katsulas, appearing without the massive makeup we remember from "Babylon 5") has coerced the beautiful Jasmin (Elizabeth Gracen), mistress of disguise, to break into the lab and steal Pratt's secrets. Even worse, Jasmin's sister, Bella (Anna Katarina), would not mind seeing her dead. Jasmin gets into Pratt's laboratory in the middle of an experiment with Banner, which means, of course, that the Hulk is going to appear. Now all the pieces are in play.

What is somewhat surprising is that the script by Gerald Di Pego, who also did "The Trial of the Incredible Hulk," turns the last half of the movie into more of a romance. Fate has thrown David and Jasmin (pronounced "Yasmin" and not "Jasmine") together, and they fall for each other. In terms of this plotline that seems a bit of a stretch, but then technically the first Hulk movie (i.e, it was released on video as one) was the two-part television episode with Mariette Hartley as Dr. Caroline Fields, where she dies and we all cry. Clearly Bixby is interested in provoking that sort of response for the end of this one.

There is certainly an element of pathos to the finale of this one, but the big moment is not really set up that well. I had trouble accepting the relationship between Jasmin and David, so I had to play catch up. But then I felt the same way about the big scene for the Hulk at the end as well, finding it fell short of the big finish as well. Consequently, "The Death of the Hulk" has a bittersweet ending because they should have been able to come up with a better way of pulling this off. I round up on this one only because the ending has the implicit Bixby stamp of approval and because the first half was pretty solid.

3 out of 5 stars Best of the t.v. movies...but still not that great.......2006-01-25

As a fan of the original series, I have to say I was disappointed in the first two reunion movies. Trying to incorporate other Marvel characters into the (reasonably) "real" universe of the Bixby series just didn't work. OK, so this movie isn't terribly believable either, but Bixby gives his usual credible performance and the plot doesn't simply rehash the David Banner-on-the-run formula. In fact, as Banner himself comments, he actually gets to SEE his alter-ego for the first time (via videotape). And that's the real appeal of this surprisingly affecting story...not the dumb terrorist subplot.

A sad end to a wonderful character, but certainly worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars Great Family Film!.......2007-05-12

I saw this movie first on broadcast TV, a place many discover great "B" movies for the first time.

But beyond the plot, beyond the charming photography of Loch Ness locales, beyond the excellent roles played by everyone in the cast, the thing that made me HAVE to own this movie is the unexpectedly charming accent and mannerisms of the real "star" of this movie, "Isabel Mary McFetridge" played by Kirsty Graham. So winsome is this bright red-haired girl of eight years in this film, it is hard to imagine the movie having the same charm with any other child actor. And the fact that Kirsty was not a professional actress prior to being cast in the film may be why all of her dear mannerisms are unlikely to have been "directed," she is just winsome naturally.

Ted Danson played a somewhat disgraced professor/researcher and "seeker of unusual phenomena." He is the man who COULDN'T find Sasquatch, proof of UFOS or any other of the "quests" he pursued. His reputation is more as a laughing stock at this point, and he only reluctantly agrees to go searching after "one more folly," (the Loch Ness Monster) when he is told he only has to prove it "ISN'T there." He is to take state of the art sonar and imaging equipment, scan the Loch with it, and prove the Loch Ness monster is a complete fable. He figures it should be easy to prove this type of negative, and heads for Scotland to "do his job, then get out of Dodge."

Performances by Ian Holm (Lord of the Rings) as the "Water Bailiff" and Joely Richardson (playing mother of Isabel) round out the main roles, but the large blue eyed "Isabel" steals the show.

This is a "must see" film that leaves you cheering at the end. You'll want to buy this one because you're going to want to re-savor the sweet gaelic charm of this film many times over. It's a "keeper."

5 out of 5 stars A captivating film about Loch Ness that will make you Believe .......2007-04-15

I first saw the movie "Loch Ness" when it was on TV and I have to say that it looks so much better on DVD especially without the commercial interruptions in between scenes and the picture is much clearer than when I first saw it on TV in 1996. The film stars Ted Danson as a down on his luck cryptozoologist who despite several failed attempts to find other mysterious legends in the world and in the mist of a bad marriage with a lawsuit thrown in, he is finally given the one in a million chance to redeem himself professionally by going to Loch Ness at the request of his employer to prove that the legendary monster that haunts the Loch is a ridiculous hoax. After arriving there he discovers that there's more to his plum assignment that first meets the eye, literally. Throughout his quest to find the mysterious monster that the world has come to know as "Nessie" Danson's character John Dempsey comes across wacky and sometimes completely irate locals who appose his study of the lake and his bad bedside manner. However, along the way there is no shortage of adventure for Dr. Dempsey in the form of unexpected clashes with other boats on the loch and the rather violent sinking of his research vessel by a territorial Nessie who miraculously saves him from a near drowning in one harrowing scene in the movie. But there are a few friendly and charming characters in the film to help keep Dempsey from going off the deep end in his pursuit for answers. One of the most memorable was the little girl Isabell and her mother played by Joey Richardson who help open John's eyes and his heart in very unique ways to the mysteries of their home and the haunting lake that serves as the family's backyard. In 1998 my dad and I took a trip to Scotland to tour Loch Ness and what I found interesting when I went there was that only fifteen minutes of the film was actually shot on location at Loch Ness. The rest of the film was shot at another loch nearby called Loch Torridan. The filmmakers thought that Loch Torridan looked more like Loch Ness than Loch Ness does itself. I'm not going to comment on their decision to do so, even though after seeing the real Loch Ness and comparing the scenery in the film, it's easy to see that they were shooting in different locations for the film but that's beside the point. In conclusion, Loch Ness is definitely worth a look you won't be disappointed. The story is good, the scenery in the film is beautiful, the acting behind each of the characters was excellent and the animatronic dinosaurs for the film were the most believable Lake monsters that I've ever seen portrayed in a movie of this genre. If you're lucky the film might just inspire you to go see the real Loch Ness and if you're hoping to snap a photo of Nessie just remember what the little girl says in the film, "You have to believe in it before you can see it." After seeing this film with an open mind I assure you that you won't have any trouble believing what's there for yourself.

3 out of 5 stars Good, solid Nessie movie.......2006-10-19

Funny. I find a lot of nice little films by just being my lazy self and watching TV. Awesome. So I ended up surfing around and came upon......LOCH NESS! Now I'm a fan of anything with monsters in it, big, small, fat, stupid, smart ect. I also think Danson is a great actor. So when I saw this I decided to watch it. It was actually pretty good. Now I came in about 10 minutes into the movie and had no idea who directed it. I was pretty surprised I was entertained. I liked the twist on it, they don't portray Nessie as most movies would, i.e. a giant monster eating everything in sight.

The acting's pretty good along with the direction. The effects are not bad either. One thing I deeply Disliked was the ending. I was in a bad mood which didn't help, but I was kinda hoping for the government and Nessie to go blow to blow.......I know. I'm a horrid person. I felt it was a bit of a cop-out, but that doesn't detract everything from this movie.

Overall if you want a good, family film that you and the kids can watch get this. It isn't as good as some of the other family films out there, but its a heck of a lot better than most.

4 out of 5 stars Loch Ness.......2006-02-18

This is what I call a guilty pleasure film. It's not the best thing ever made, nor will it ever be noted as a "must see" film.
What appeals to me is the combination of many things found in the film. The locations (even though I am told it was not filmed at Loch Ness) are beautiful to look at. The music is nice and mellow and the story is put together in a fun fashion. All in all it is a great film to relax with.

Critics panned the film and many folks don't see what I see in it, but films are a very individual thing. It is a good family film and worth taking a look at.

Actually they are not just adventurers; they are criminals looking for something very precious, but, well, that's not important. Deep in the cave the expedition team encounters something big, something fearful and creepy. Yes, they're giant beetles attacking and eating humans!

This is a typical, silly plot that can be fun with skillful storytelling or clever direction, but unfortunately "Caved In" has neither of them. The story goes on in a matter-of-fact way; it's no fun to see the actors acting badly fighting against a bunch of big bugs badly CG-created. And that `bad' is not kind of `campy' type of badness, nor `tongue-in-cheek' kind of the intentional one. It's plain bad. Designs are no better. The cave never looks real. It is too clean and the rocks and stones, I believe, are put there by someone in the set.

For the record, Christopher Atkins plays the leader of the team. David Palffy and Colm Meaney hire him. The film tries to add something new by showing the members of Atkin's family; Angela Featherstone as his wife, Stevie Mitchell as his son and Chelan Simmons as his daughter. Fans of these actors, however, would be very disappointed for they are not allowed to show their best. But how can they when fighting back the cheesy creatures in the insipid battle scenes?

Direct-to-video "Caved In" (2006) was released just one year after not-so-great "The Cave" (2005). They are not related, but both movies have similar stories about the expedition team going deep into the earth and the predatory creatures attacking them. The difference is "The Cave" has decent production designs and impressive cinematography while everything in "Caved In" looks quite cheap. If you ask me which is better, my answer is, none. But here's another answer I can give and that is, See "The Descent."

3 out of 5 stars mom kicks butt.......2006-12-09

Well, this was not a very good movie, but it had some redeeming qualities. Mom with a pump action shot gun was nothing less than a super hero. I mean she was awesome and when she started blasting away, you almost had to feel sorry for the poor defenseless 6 foot long killer beetles. Then there was the kind of humorous part where every time mom blasted a beetle, its guts splattered all over the cute little blonde spoiled daughter. The little brother was an idiot. Dad was a little on the naive side too. The bad guys tried to act tough but were pretty incompetent. And how did all the lights and the elevator work in this abandoned mine fifty years later? It's a good thing they did because the explorers brought almost no equipment. Huh? Well the bottom line is, this movie is watchable, laughable and not the worst way to kill a couple hours if you like Sci Fi channel caliber movies. I do, so I was okay with it. Man, mom was good with that shotgun!!!

5 out of 5 stars So bad that is was good.......2006-08-04

I have seen bad movies before and this was one of the best bad movie that I have ever seen. In other words, if you like bad movies, movies with plot holes and stupid graphics this is one for you.

    3 out of 5 stars BEETLEMANIA.......2006-07-03

SCIFI CHANNEL's at it again with this minor piece of entertainment, nothing great, but not horrible either. We start in 1948 and a mining supervisor orders his crew to work overtime to clear some rocks that are blocking a passageway. One guy refuses and gets into fisticuffs knocking the supervisor into the rocks and lo and behold, the passageway is cleared. Inside, AHHH, a fortune in emeralds and beetles..not John Paul George and Ringo either...but great big vicious killer beetles. A cavein ensues and we flash forward to present day where the descendant of the pugilistic miner has the map that leads to the emeralds and he'll do anything to get them! That includes forcing BLUE LAGOON's Christopher Atkins to lead him and Colm Meany and crew in spite of the killer bugs. It's all been done before but at least they use beetles which is a little original, and the effects are above average. A decent timewaster for those predisposed to giant bug movies.

1 out of 5 stars I wish I could give it less than 1 star.......2006-05-30

I'm so glad I rented this piece of doo doo, instead of buying it.
Too bad it wasn't burned on a rewritteable DVD then the disc would have a use.One of the "WORST"movies ever!

5 out of 5 stars Sometimes They Come Back..........2007-07-04

From the wonderfully twisted minds of horror-meisters Benjamin "Bob" Clark and Alan Ormsby, comes DEATHDREAM (aka: Dead Of Night, originally released in 1972). This wicked tale of terrifying wish-fulfillment is right up there w/ the other Clark / Ormsby classics, CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS and BLACK CHRISTMAS! Richard Backus is unnerving as Andy Brooks, re-animated vietnam casualty. His slowly rotting, soulless zombie character is unforgettable! John Marley (The Godfather, It Lives Again) plays Andy's dad. DEATHDREAM is "The Monkey's Paw" w/ an amped up scare factor and a sly political statement about the war. As a straight horror movie alone, this is a masterpiece! It's well past time that Clark and Ormsby got the recognition they deserve! I only wish they'd made more horror movies together. Watch for their cameos too (as a cop and a bystander respectively)! Also, this is Tom Savini's first make-up effort, as Alan Ormsby's assistant! Buy immediately...

    4 out of 5 stars He's back..........2007-01-25

...I was pretty pleased with this fairly unknown film. I bought it along with "Unlce Sam" in a "Zombie Two-fers" pack. It is about a Vietnam soldier. His family is notified that he has died, yet he later shows up home. He begins to behave strangely, and later has to kill people to inject their blood into his body in order to regenerate his body, as it starts to decay once it is out of blood. Interesting film here, not at all boring. Would tell you more about it, but don't want to ruin it for you.

5 out of 5 stars Andy came home, some boys never do...........2007-01-22

Deathdream is a farely unknown thriller/horror film brought to you by Bob Clark (Black Christmas) & Alan Ormsby (Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things). It also marked Tom Savini's real movie debut, if you don't know who he is, watch Dawn of the Dead or From Dusk Till Dawn to catch up. The movie is about a soldier who returns home after the Vietnam war but left the boy they remembered in the trenches. Is Andy really the same person he use to be or something totally different? Deathdream has the most believable characters I've seen in any movie, this might be because his family reminds me so much of mine. His father, a man afraid to show the softer side of himself, strict, angry, and more attached to the family dog than his own son. His mother, a caring and defending woman even during all of the drama & madness that surrounds her. His sister, a concerned woman who tries her best to make Andy feel at home, but confused at the same time. If your local video store doesn't carry this film, order it now! It's a must have for all true horror fanatics. Deathdream is a depressing film, which is a rarity in horror.

4 out of 5 stars Crazed Vietnam Vet comes back to kill. .......2006-08-30

First , a few things to get out of the way, this is NOT a Zombie movie at all. I laughed at some of the reviews saying it's a zombie flick, It's not, it's more along the lines of a dramatic thriller mixed in with a supernatural twist (the undead part).

A typical vehicle of the 70's. The 70's and early 80's flicks took advantage of the attention of Vietnam to come up with these anti-war flicks (Soldiers coming home but never being the same, being either violent or suicidal and ultimately hurting themselves or others). Enter "Deathdream" which skims over into the crazed Vet coming home to kill phase.

Andy is allegedly killed in Vietnam. His family is devasted but Andy , however, is displaying psychotic, and violent tendecies as time goes on. He kills a truck driver, kills a dog, and then well I won't spoil.

A great acting job by Richard Backus as he shows us the detoriation of one kind man corrupted by war and violence into a crazed soldier. The performances all around are excellent but like I said, it's not a zombie movie. The only zombie twist is that the guy's dead but that can easily be put into the supernatural category. The ending is very predictable, but this is quite an entertaining descend into madness, and social. commentary by Bob Clark. I don't think he needed the zombie twist at all but perhaps thought it was necessary to sell the film. Speaking of which includes early makeup effects by Tom Savini.

    Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Effective and chilling.......2006-07-04

I had read good reports about "Deathdream", but I didn't expect much from this film as the opening soldiers-in-action prologue passed into the credits, and then to a humble family meal, as the atmosphere was too reminiscent of countless low budget, mid 1970's movies that used to show up on TV all the time. But to my surprise the film turned out to be far more effective and well made than I expected.

The rather cheap wartime opening served to introduce that character of Andy, although it is not handled very well at all and the characters are hard to distinguish. Luckily it's not really necessary, as the first important scene is the one that follows, in which the family meal I mentioned above is interrupted by an army officer carrying a telegram...the house visitor that every parent dreads. This important scene is handled surprisingly well, as Andy's mother, father and sister react to the news that Andy won't be coming home again. Luckily, this effective scene is not a mere one off, but just the start of what turns out to be a gruesome and thought-provoking horror/drama. Soon after the tearful telegram scene, the family's grief turns to elation as to their surprise, Andy suddenly turns up in the middle of the night seemingly alive and well...but unfortunately, he's neither.

I think a lot of the power of the film comes from the fact that the acting is all so good. With no big star names, there is still no major weak link anywhere in the film, and everyone seems to behave naturally and believably. The script has been written remarkably realistically and all of the characters act and speak like real people, without having any silly horror movie conventions to wrangle with. In fact the whole screenplay reads like a dream, as the time between Andy's arrival and the suspicions of various people that something is wrong happen about as fast as would naturally be expected. Andy's very first night at home comes at the cost of the life of a truck driver who gives him a lift, and as soon as one of the first characters outside of the main family (the doctor) actually meets him, he immediately suspects that something is wrong and decides to go the police without any hesitation. This refreshing realism does not mean of course that Andy does not get to cause some serious havoc before the end of the movie, and the highlight of his brief rampage is the drive-in movie scene in which Andy's sudden fury and hideous appearance are genuinly shocking.

As I said, the film has a low budget feel which hampers it, but the performances of Andy's mother, father and sister are all very good, and really lift the film up a level. Even the smaller roles are good, right down to the bunch of kids that visit Andy in the family back yard, or the police officers and local doctor. A special mention should also go to the actress playing Andy's former girlfriend who's re-acquaintance with him is far from the happy event she must have dreamed of. Of course it is the performance of Richard Backus as Andy that has to carry the main weight, and he is extremely effective, as he is required to present a character who is subtly not quite right, but still believeable. He's also quite convincingly evil, and the scenes of him constantly rocking back and forth in that damned creaky chair made me wish someone would just punch him!

The story is based loosely on the age-old tale of "The Monkey's Paw", so you don't need reminding that there is no happy ending. A vague anti-war message seems to be in the background, but the general intention seems to be just to to portray the horror of what is happening to one very ordinary family. In this the film succeeds wonderfully. A genuine little gem, rewarding and memorable to watch.

This dark fantasy-adventure borrows elements from Evangelion and Gasaraki and presents them in the style of Lain. Kyosuke Date's life becomes a waking nightmare as he discovers that his mother was murdered, he is a powerful mutant, and fragments of his sister's soul have become humanlike creatures called "Flickers." The Flickers are mercilessly hunted by the cruel vice president of an infinitely powerful conglomerate, the Kirihara Group. Kyosuke takes up with the sardonic Shiro Mibu, the sworn enemy of the Kirihara, and is soon battling giant robots and screeching maniacs. Series director Akiyuki Shinbo uses all the latest tricks: rapid-fire editing, weird colors (including blood-red frames), repeated close-ups of crosses and other objects, still frames juxtaposed with battle sequences, etc. But these flashy visuals can't disguise the slightness of the familiar story. Rated 16 Up: Considerable violence, grotesque imagery, profanity, alcohol and tobacco use. --Charles Solomon

4 out of 5 stars Pardon Me, But There's a Knife In My Back.......2004-10-14

Kyosuke Date is not a happy camper. Frankly he's justified in his rage. When we first meet him he's being stabbed in the back by his mother, who then dies. The second time we see him he's being dug out of his grave in which he's been buried alive. No, it hasn't been a good weekend for Kyosuke. To complicate matters he finds that he has a long lost sister somewhere that evil companies are trying to find and he can now suddenly turn into a mutant demon thing that can kick major butt. Not that Kyosuke's thrilled about the transforming into a hideous demon thing, but compared to the rest of his weekend, that's a fairly good point.

The Monster Within doesn't show it's hand very much when it comes to the major plot of the series. All three episodes are mainly concerned with Kyosuke trying to figure out who his sister is and random characters of the sinister variety keep popping up and looking threatening. There's also Shiro, a helpfully homicidal mystery man who looks slightly like a mime who's joined up with Kyosuke.

At it's heart, Soultaker is a gothic horror piece inflected with a good bit of angst and bullets. Kyosuke didn't ask to be put in the position he's in, but he's going to have to live with that now and make the best of it. While it's a little confusing since the audience knows no more than the main character, The Soultaker still deserves a place in anime libraries.

5 out of 5 stars SOUL FRICKEN GOOD!.......2004-02-16

According to Amazon reviewer charles solomon, SOULTAKER is a derivative of anime series like gasaraki & evangelon (does every title have to be compared to evangelon? sheesh!) I strongly disagree!
instead ST adapts elements from the DEVILMAN/GUYVER/GENOCYBER/DETONATOR ORGUN/X-MEN genre but with a touch of DARIO ARGENTO italian horror.
the plot/storyline may be confusing at first, but it your'e patient and suspend your disbelief you'll eventually be taken in
it's refreshing to see something slightly different from the contemporaly anime shows. the colors have a "PSYCHO NOIR" kinda feel and a style simular to Mike Mignola's HELLBOY Comics. the action/pacing is more appealing than the aforementioned series GARSAKI and EVANGELION which to me are very slow and tedious at times. Soultaker also has one of the coolest intro themes. another classic from the legendary TATSUNOKO studios (gatchaman94,Casshan,Hurricane polymar)SOULTAKER is a must have addition for the scifi, anime, comicbook enthusiast.

4 out of 5 stars Give Yourself Three Episodes.......2003-11-27

I was completely confused during the first episode. I too felt that scenes were random, weapons were too strange (Hospital's needles), and any reason for watching was not given. But I stuck through the first DVD and it all came together in the third episode. If you give yourself at least three episodes then you should be hooked into the plot; a plot that is sure to take you strange but interesting places.

    1 out of 5 stars Erm....WHAT??.......2003-07-20

the soul taker to me is a running joke with my freinds. What WERE they thinking? The points of view were completely random, people were spitting out dialogue at random moments, it was like the characters were cast in stone, because trhey barely moved. AND WHAT IS WITH THE TEA??? I have never in my life seen an anime that people drank so much tea! The only anime that is more pointless then this was bey blade. One of the things that i really didn't get was..well there was a fight scene, then suddenly, SPARROWS?? There was randomly a flock of sparrows. And the artists, obviously had an odd obsession with stained glass windows because people were being dyed random colours. So my overall review is..DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!!

5 out of 5 stars Confusing but great!.......2002-11-09

The very first episode might be very confusing, but the second and third ones are better because then the creators sorta half explain what happened in a weird twisted sort of way. Also, in the credits, I've recognized the Japanese voice actor of Duo from Gundam Wing and the American voice actor of Quatre of Gundam Wing(Kyosuke's voice). I love this series, the animation is great and it has a plotline that actually make a person think!

Sony PlayStation Monster Rancher fans, prepare to enter the game world! In this animated video, Genki wins a Monster Rancher tournament, receives a "Monster 200X" CD-ROM as a prize, slips it into his player, and is magically sucked into the Monster Rancher world. Bragging to Holly that he's a game expert, Genki facilitates her escape from the Black Dino Squad. Holly reveals Moo's plot to conquer her world and describes her quest to defeat Moo by finding the mystery disk that contains the Phoenix. Genki inserts his own CD-ROM into the shrine and it unlocks not the Phoenix, but a cute, perpetually hungry little monster he names Mocchi. In "I'm Mocchi," Holly's magic stone leads the foursome deep into a forest amid a terrible storm in search of another mystery disk. When Genki, Holly, Mocchi, and Suezo come to a fork in the road in "Guardian of the Disks," they are told to beware of the enigma that lives in the forest ahead. Guided by Holly's stone, they persevere and discover a graveyard of old disks guarded by a friendly stone monster named Golem. When Golem defeats the evil blue Gel army, Genki and Holly invite him to join their continuing quest to release the Phoenix. This video--and TV series--bears marked resemblance to the Pokémon series and, although slightly less skillfully animated, it is sure to appeal to a whole generation of gamers and animation fans. Parents concerned about violence should, of course, be vigilant. (Ages 5-10) --Tami Horiuchi

Genki wins a contest and gets a new game for his PlayStation in the mail. He plays the game to watch a girl and a monster run away from the Black Dino troops. She enters a shrine (although, the game calls it a "ruined temple") and unlocks a disk. Instead of unlocking a monster, Genki is pulled into the weird world and makes friends with Holly and her monster!
I haven't heard of the Monster Rancher video game until I saw the series. I watched it on TV...but soon lost track of it.

    4 out of 5 stars Monster Rancher.......2002-04-25

I must say, I originally thought this series would be yet another Pokémon/Digimon clone. I was wrong. This series teaches the fundamentals friendship along with the obvious good versus evil. The best part about Monster Rancher is that is actually a 'closed' story line with a great conclusion. Not all of the episodes are available for purchase yet, but they are worth collecting.

1 out of 5 stars Really, really 0 stars for this anime........2001-02-24

This cartoon is the most bothering anime I had ever seen, is worser than Digimon, the hole cartoon really really bothers me, it's dumb, stupid and boring.

5 out of 5 stars Monster Ranger -- Anime "Mon" Continues.......2000-06-13

In the tradition of Pokemon and Digimon, we can now watch Monster Rancher. If you have a Pokemon or Digimon fan at home, they will enjoy Monster Ranger just as much. Our new hero, Genki (which means energy, and he's full of it) is mystically transformed to the world of Monster Ranger while playing the new "Monster Ranger 200x" on his Sony Playstation. He joins a party of monsters and a fellow human (girl -- can't recall her name) to find the mystical Pheonix monster who will turn all the bad monsters, ruled by the evil Mu, into good monsters. There's enough variety and uniqueness for any "Mon" fan to enjoy these. In the second DVD, the party gathers new allies during various adventures. I recommend the actual Sony Playstation (Monster Ranger 2) game as well.
