Description

They're hiding in your closet. They're lurking in your bed. They're all over you- snacking on your skin, burrowing through your scalp, munching on your mascara. They're the creepy crawlers of the unknown world, and now- thanks to micro-photographer Lennart Nilsson, who brought us The Miracle of Life- you can (shudder) catch these critters in the act, magnified to monster size. Look quick, on the bookshelf- a giant silverfish is slithering over your Shakespeare. Peer into the house plant- a mammoth ladybug stalks an aphid for a feast. Grab your coat- and hope it's not teeming with ravenous larvae. Then glance in the mirror: are those sci-fi creatures you see- swarming through the rainforest of your hair, the jungle of your arm, the furrowed contours of your hand? Change your perspective (if you dare). Spy from an unexpected angle- say, a behind-the-teeth view- and a kiss is not just a kiss anymore. Zoom in again: a secret drama is taking place, in, on, and around us in a hidden world. And yes, we're all in it together- whether we know it or not.

3 out of 5 stars Nice Photography - Poor Story.......2007-01-06

While the photography used in making this movie is very impressive, the story line they used to tie it together was too forced. It seems the story was developed to utilize the camera images they had already filmed. Otherwise, an interesting piece. Also, I am not sure why Amazon's title says "Stacy Keach" and the DVD cover credits "David Ogden Stiers" as the narration.

2 out of 5 stars Ride The Melodramatic Mechanical Burrowing Platypus!.......2006-05-12

"Unknown World" is a 1951 cheapie starring nobody. The subject matter is pretty common by science fiction standards and predates "At The Earth's Core" by about twenty years. Though it lacks the unintentional charm of the later film starring Doug McClure and Peter Cushing, it follows a near identical plot.

The film opens with a faux cold war newsreel about the perils of nuclear weapons. The plot hinges on some scientists who form "The Society to Save Civilization" and propose building a machine to burrow into the Earth (which they claim is not only hollow, but is cool and full of fresh air) using a giant mechanical platypus called the "cyclotram" which "is an amphibious conveyance based on the principles of an ovoidal atmosphere." I have no idea what that is even supposed to mean, as my dictionary defines "ovoidal" as "shaped like an egg," but I listened to this four times and I'm pretty sure that the secret is somewhere in the ovoidal atmosphere. Anyway...this expedition is the only hope for life on Earth as we know it. The logical proof of this statement is hard to follow, but just trust me: the cyclotram is our only hope.

I am sure this comes as a surprise to nobody, but they choose to begin their journey by burrowing into a volcano. (I'm not a vulcanologist, but this seems like predictably poor planning.) While they are driving the platypusmobile into the core of the Earth, they say things like "Brother, it's really black out there" and generally act like nits. It is a given that there is an onboard romance as well as boorish fistfights among the crew to establish who exactly is the Alpha-male. Did I mention that there is also a lengthy discourse on the formation of limestone? Yes, it's that exciting.

Eventually they overcome the travails of life at the cool, hollow Earth's core (which include sterile rabbits, water shortages, gas attacks, and the obligatory volcanic eruption) and, using their instrument made out of handwritten legend on graph paper, find themselves on the surface of the ocean near an island. That's where the film ends, which leads me to a question: what about the atom...am I crazy? Wasn't that the whole point of the movie?

This film is not only very dated and ponderous, but features characters that aren't very likeable. It also features one of the silliest means of conveyance ever filmed, and some extremely bad acting. Now for the good news: it was filmed in the Carlsbad Caverns National Park, so if you ever wanted to see the Carlsbad Caverns National Park, this is an excellent opportunity, though sadly the film is in black and white.

3 out of 5 stars I feel like I am going to live forever.......2006-03-07

It is 1951 both of the great world wars are over however he knows it is just a short matter of time before someone will start another. Now with the proliferation of the "H" bomb which is a thousand times bigger than the "A" bomb, all of civilization and future civilizations will be destroyed.

However Dr. Jeremiah Morley (Victor Kilian) of the "Society to Save Civilization" has the answer. It is to burro down into the underground caverns of the world and live there. Wait, but who is going to pay for this? Yep along with the standard sci-fi set of doctors, scientists and demolitionists, it is the playboy (Bruce Kellogg) son of a newspaper owner. Of course one of the scientists has to be female (Marilyn Nash.)

Everything is going swimmingly well until two of the crew is gassed and the water supply is contaminated. What will they do now?

This film, original Screenplay by Millard Kaufman, has all the look and feel of the big bug sci-fi movies made in the fifties. There is the obligatory beginning geo-political speech with a definition of an "H" bomb. The device for digging is called the Cylotram; it looks like one of those buster Crab Martian vehicles and acts similar to the Atragon in the Japanese movie "Kaitei gunkan" If it had monsters and ducks it would be the precursor to James Mason in the movie "Journey to the Center of the Earth." Surprisingly many of the filming locations In "Unknown World" and Journey to the Center of the Earth" are both in Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Some scenes were on Pismo Beach the home of the famous Pismo Clam.

On key feature of the movie that one many joke about are all the platitudes and clichés.
"I was afraid to die."
"And I was afraid to live."

3 out of 5 stars The Baby Bunnies Are Dead Because They Were Sterile!.......2006-02-26

This movie is similar to the classic "Journey to the Center of the Earth" filmed in 1959, eight years after this film. However, while that movie is enjoyable because it combines the acceptable naivety of Jules Verne's era with straightforward story-telling, this movie ignores everything known in the 1950s about the interior of our planet. Furthermore, this movie completely ignores any serious preparation for exploring the depths. You can throw on top of this the absurdity of a machine with a drill diameter significantly less than the diameter of the vehicle that follows it.

Dr. Jeremiah Morley (Victor Kilian, a veteran of more than 100 movie and television appearances, including shows such as "All in the Family" and "The Brady Bunch)) has decided that nuclear war will eventually doom mankind. His solution is to find man a home inside the planet, safe from nuclear war. Dr. Morley begins his project hopefully, but eventually all support is pulled. Fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately), the millionaire son of a newspaperman decides to fund his expedition, with the only proviso that he be permitted to go along.

Dr. Morley build's his vehicle, looking much like a spaceship with tail fins (seriously, the vehicle had fins, much like some cars of the 1950s). The sad thing is that the vehicle's drill was only about half the diameter of the vehicle itself. Also, the vehicle had a window in front with no shielding. On the plus side, the vehicle did have a self-contained air supply, water and concentrated food. On the negative side, the vehicle appeared to have no accommodation for sleeping. Also, the vehicle seemed to run on an internal combustion engine, and though the explorers seemed to have anticipated toxic gases, the failed to anticipate a lack of oxygen or an explosive atmosphere.

The vehicle travels into the earth, which looks much like the side of a miniature hill much of the time, and a lot like Carlsbad Caverns the rest of the time. There may have been some studio work thrown in as well. There are several locations in Carlsbad Caverns that are used more than once, which I always find annoying in a movie.

Some of our explorers die as they encounter toxic gases and cut clotheslines (well, one of the climbing ropes looked a lot like clothesline to me). However, we kind of expect that sort of thing in an exciting adventure into the unknown. But using these deaths as inspiration, our explorers eventually find their way into a place where mankind can live.

Once in the underground utopia, our explorers anticipate the birth of baby bunnies because that will tell our explorers how suitable man would find this environment. Unfortunately, the baby bunnies are born dead because, here is a GREAT scientific conclusion, mammals are sterile under ground! Huh? I had to wonder what genius came up with sterility as being a cause of death.

Our explorers realize that living underground just is not going to work for mankind, so they decide it is time to leave. Coincidentally, intense volcanic activity begins the moment they decide to leave. I have noticed that coincidences seem to be common in movies of this type. The survivors of the expedition decide that it is time to make their way back to the surface in what is likely to be just as thrilling a trip as their descent was.

The principal problem with this movie is that it is just too superficial. Given the amount of thought that Dr. Morley has put into his underground exploration, I would have thought that the expedition would have been much better prepared. Compare the preparation of this expedition with the preparation of the expedition in the 1959 movie "Journey to the Center of the Earth."

The creatures in that latter movie were fantastic and would have been unbelievable in a supposedly science-based movie; they added a lot of interest and entertainment to that movie. I enjoyed the creatures since they were in the spirit of that era and that tale. Perhaps this movie should have had some creatures thrown in for interest, but that probably would have blown their budget.

This movie was okay for a one-time watch. I doubt I will spend the time to watch it again because I struggled to maintain my interest. There was some attempt to take a scientific approach, but ignoring what was known about the interior of the earth in the 1950s and blatant stupidities (the baby bunnies were born dead because creatures underground are sterile) just detracted from any enjoyment. If you have to watch every movie made about journeys deep into the earth, you have to get this one. If you want to get a movie that you have plenty of opportunity to pan, this one is good for that. If you are looking for a good fantasy about exploring the center of the earth (assuming no molten core), then get 1959's "Journey to the Center of the Earth."

1 out of 5 stars Hitting Rock Bottom At The Center Of The Earth.......2006-01-29

UNKNOWN WORLD isn't so much a badly made film as it is a very boring one.

The story is essentially a riff on Jules Verne's JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH with a 1951 spin: a group of scientists become convinced that nuclear holocaust is inevitable and seek to locate a safe haven for mankind inside the earth itself. They develop a machine they call a "cyclotram," which might be described as a strangely art deco-styled drill bit with seating for six, descend into an extinct volcano, and work hard to put you to sleep within the first twenty minutes of the film.

Considering that you still have fifty-four minutes to go, it might be just as well if you did doze off at that point, for the film doesn't get any better. If you stay awake for the rest of it, you will find that they don't do much actual drilling; apparently the interior of the earth is riddled with dandly tubes ideal for cyclotram travel. Now and then they pause to argue needlessly, kill off a character or two, argue needlessly, look for water, and then argue needlessly some more. Eventually they do reach a space that might be used as a sanctuary from nuclear war; when they do, they all argue needlessly some more.

The cast is not actually bad enough to make fun of but neither are they actually adequate, so there's no joy to be had in either direction; the visual effects are much the same. The Millard Kaufman script is a clunker if ever there was one, but director Terry Morse--a Hollywood workhorse if ever there was one--manages to give the thing enough cohesion to keep it going, so once again it's not quite bad enough to laugh at nor is it entertaining on its own merits.

The absolute best that can be said for UNKNOWN WORLD is that it is tiresome, and indeed I had to play this DVD no less than four times before I could get through it without falling asleep. If that sounds like a joke, I assure you that it is not. The movie is so dull that you will feel you are settling to the bottom of a subterranian sea. Bon Voyage.

3 out of 5 stars good movie bad dvd quality.......2006-01-16

I always enjoyed watching this film during the early 1950's.
I had an old ingolsorand power drill that looked like the cyclotram. Why is the quality so bad. I have a vrc copy that in much better? They must have made the DVD from the worst copy they could find.
During the 1960's and 1970's my brother and I were convinced that hollywood must have burned the original of this film, so I was delighted that a copy showed up. It is a great concept and kind of spooky and depressing, after all, it is dark under the earth, and should not be as cozy as a back lit cave as shown in the 1959 Journey to the Center of the Earth, which is another favority of mine anyway.
I only hope that in the future they will remake this with a better original print!!!!! Maybe they did burn the original print!!!

    3 out of 5 stars Mongo madness.......2007-02-24

Well, this was my first exposure to the original Flash Gordon serial, after seeing clips of it for years and watching the laughably-bad 1980 feature film. I have to say that although I'm not ready to proclaim it a "classic," I was certainly entertained for four hours. And wasn't that really the point of this short films back in the early days of sound cinema? They packed plenty of action, colorful characters and outrageous situations into each 20-minute chapter.

As a lifelong science-fiction fan, I got a campy kick out of the "science" in this one. My favorite line from the opening chapter: As Dale Arden begins to have trouble breathing as the rocketship carrying Flash, Zarkov and her blasts from Earth's atmosphere, Zarkov apologizes thusly, "Sorry...in all the excitement, I forgot to turn on the oxygen."

If you don't mind leaving your brain at the door, or get a nostalgic thrill from such lurid theatrics, you could do a lot worse than this first Flash series.

    4 out of 5 stars Campy 1930's sci-fi fun.......2007-01-25

You'll laugh out loud at the "special effects" and some of the acting, but these Flash Gordon episodes -- originally shown in movie houses, and later on some television stations in the 1950s and 1960s -- are cool entertainment as well as history for sci-fi fans.

5 out of 5 stars Get The Right Ones!.......2006-02-18

You're here because you love the Flash Gordon serials and want the best. Buster Crabbe was in the original three which Image Entertainment sells as Space Soldiers, Flash Gordon's Trip To Mars, and Flash Gordon Conquers The Universe. They were released in 2000, with package artwork from Hearst Entertainment done in 1996. The serials are un-cut, meaning each chapter includes its original beginning and ending titles/credits.

They are more pricey than the 2002 versions from Image Entertainment. But they are not chopped down with missing chapters to make 90 minute movies out of. And they are better in picture quality than other DVD brands.

Amazon may still have the box set available to save you some money.

    Have fun watching them!

    5 out of 5 stars Don't be an Arangapoid!.......2006-01-08

World renowned polo player "Flash" Gordon must save the Earth from being destroyed by the insideous (and leacherous) Ming the Merciless-- played with sadistic relish by Charles Middleton. Both Buster Crabbe as Flash and Jean Rogers as Dale play their roles with an enthusiasm and sincerity that just no longer exist on the screen. But my heart was won by the luscious Pricilla Lawson as the scheming Princess Aura-- who's as hot for Flash as her dad is for Dale.

The production design is amazingly good, and mostly based on the Alex Raymond comic strip-- which is also where the plot originates. There are plenty of silly rubber monster suits, iguanas with glued on horns and dubbed-in bronchitis, space ships that backfire before they take off, and lotsa precode jiggle.

To me, it all spells one thing: PURE CINEMA!!!

3 out of 5 stars Day of the Return of the Revenge of the Son of the Invisible Man.......2006-07-11

...Disclaimer: This review is soley for "The Astral Factor". My comments on the other films can be found elsewhere on Amazon. Short and sweet, don't waste your time with them..

Celebrity strangler with a mommy complex masters the paranormal, tuns invisible, and simply walks out of prison. There's witnesses that testfied against him to strangle, dontchaknow! Nothing doing there from a cell. Couple of cops who don't get along set out to stop him. The Darth Vader breathing and heartbeats during the invisibility sequences get old fast, but this isn't such a bad film, with a great late 70s SoCal feel that I love. We get treated to a boat chase, a satyr play, and one of the actresses singing Leadbelly's "In The Pines" as if she was Nico in between the murders. The theme song sounds like someone trying to translate a bluesy jazz piece into Krautrock. Certainly unique. Mildy recommended, but again, avoid the other three films included here, particularly the turgid "Galaxy Invader".

2 out of 5 stars Pass The Cheese, Please.......2006-05-12

I must really hand it to marketers: I can't imagine finding a single DVD with four less entertaining sci-fi films on it, yet people still buy this disk. Each of these films is offensively poor, but one is nearly impossible to sit through.

"The Astral Factor" is laughably silly as an insane but brilliant convict uses ESP to harken back to his mother's death while being pursued by perhaps the least likeable police detective in movie history. This one is a real eye-roller, but is mostly just silly and boring. It is also the best film on the DVD.

"The Galaxy Invader" is a tale of drunken rednecks in "Harleyville" (really) attempting to capture and exploit a sleestak-like green alien with a hairdryer-like laser pistol. There are subplots about disgusting drunken romance, a professor (who is the worst actor I have ever seen in my life) and his protege who free the "green man" from a high security garage, and spousal vengeance involving a cliff and puppet. This is truly onerous, but is not the worst film on the DVD.

"Battle of the Worlds" is by far the worst movie on the DVD. Many will disagree as it stars Claude Rains (at an all-time career low) as a scientist. It concerns a marauding planetoid that orbits and attacks the Earth, and the annoying people who defend our fine planet. This is a sure cure for insomnia. I hated this movie.

"Unknown World" gives "Battle of the Worlds" a fine competition in the contest to determine which is the least enjoyable film. I liked "Unknown World" much more as it features disagreeable characters, but has some hilarious "scientific" dialogue and ponderous cold war overtones, not to mention the silliest mode of transportation in movie history, the "cyclotram" which is basically a giant mechanical platypus used to tunnel to the Earth's core.

The quality of the films is quite poor, and the color transfer (especially on "Battle of the Worlds") is very bad. There are no extras, and each film is only divided into four scenes, so navigating around the movies is difficult. Still, you do get four movies at a very low price, so if you are into bad sci-fi and you want a bargain, this disk may be for you. Try watching them all back to back. I dare you.

2 out of 5 stars Science Fiction Schlock.......2006-03-03

    "Invisible Strangler"

I do not know how many movies have been made about invisible people. However, most of them have been a waste of time. This 1976 movie falls into that category, though it does feature a stellar cast.

Roger Sands (Frank Ashmore) is a convicted killer sitting in prison. Roger has developed his mental powers so that he can do miraculous things, like turning mattresses upside down, knocking a gun from a person's hand, and turning invisible. Turning invisible is a good talent to have in prison.

We see Elke Sommer, Queenie Smith ("Foul Play" and numerous other roles), Robert Hoy and numerous other well-known character actors in this movie. The movie is filled with experienced acting talent. Unfortunately, the acting talent struggles to make anything of this movie. The acting is frequently overdone, and often reminds me of a comedy I once saw where the actors were supposed to "emote."

The only bright spot in this movie was Stefanie Powers. She stole every scene she was in, and laid the groundwork for her role in "Hart to Hart" and other shows. I would watch this movie again just to watch her.

    "The Galaxy Invader"

This movie is just plain awful. The acting is horrible, the plot is dumb, and the special effects are beyond cheesy. In the pantheon of bad movies, this one has to be near the bottom.

An alien lands on earth for reasons that the movie never discusses. Unfortunately for this alien, he has landed in the middle of red-neck hell, the capital of which seems to be Harleyville, Maryland.

There are a few moments in the movie where there are almost moments of tension, but I was groaning so much that I failed to be tense. Scenes of the alien skulking in someone's basement I found puzzling. The fight scenes where everyone was moving slowly enough to make sure they really did not hit each other was like something from an awful Kung Fu movie. The stupidity of the majority of the actors in combination with the terrible acting turned this whole movie into a joke.

There is a class of movies that are mediocre, but worth watching. Then there is a class of movies that are so bad that they become a kind of classic, such as Ed Wood's "Plan 9 from Outer Space." Between these two classes of movies is a class of just plain awful movies that should be allowed to disintegrate into fertilizer; this movie fits into this category.

    "Battle of the Worlds"

I thought that a movie with Claude Rains, who starred in such classics as "The Invisible Man," "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," "Casablanca," and "Notorious," might have some redeeming characteristics. This movie did have some redeeming characteristics, but they were almost exclusively those of Mr. Rains.

Professor Benson (Rains) is a middle-aged genius who hangs out with his flowers and hot babes. When a planet enters our solar system from another galaxy, Professor Benson always seems to know what to do, though nearly always just a little late to be truly effective. The planetoid causes a near catastrophe with one of our spaceships, and then mysteriously goes into an orbit about earth.

Flying saucers that spout animated beams of light attack spaceships sent to investigate the planetoid. The earth plans to blow the planetoid up until Benson convinces them that doing so would be a disaster. Benson travels to the planetoid so that he can ferret out the secret hidden in the planetoid. Once on the planetoid, our intrepid voyagers discover that the interior of the planet is full of surprises. I will leave the rest for you to discover.

Much of this movie is boring. I grew tired of waiting for something to happen. It was only after the saucers attacked that the pace picked up. I did like Rains' curmudgeonly character. Unfortunately, Rains' character is insufficient to make this movie worth watching. I am unable to recommend this movie except for fans of awful Italian science fiction movies.

    "Unknown World"

This movie is similar to the classic "Journey to the Center of the Earth" filmed in 1959, eight years after this film. However, while that movie is enjoyable because it combines the acceptable naivety of Jules Verne's era with straightforward story-telling, this movie ignores everything known in the 1950s about the interior of our planet.

Dr. Jeremiah Morley has decided that nuclear war will eventually doom mankind. His solution is to find man a home inside the planet, safe from nuclear war. Dr. Morley builds his vehicle, looking much like a spaceship with tail fins. Unfortunately, the vehicle's drill was only about half the diameter of the vehicle itself. On the plus side, the vehicle did have a self-contained air supply, water and concentrated food. On the negative side, the vehicle appeared to have no accommodation for sleeping.

Once in the underground utopia, our explorers anticipate the birth of baby bunnies because that will tell our explorers how suitable man will find this environment. Unfortunately, the baby bunnies are born dead because, here is a GREAT scientific conclusion, mammals are sterile under ground! Huh? I had to wonder what genius came up with sterility as being a cause of death.

This movie was okay for a one-time watch. I doubt I will spend the time to watch it again because I struggled with the scientific stupidity.

3 out of 5 stars Stonehenge, A Red Light, And A Cardboard Robot.......2006-07-25

While "Unknown World" and "The Phantom Planet" are just plain silly, the real standout for cinematic cheese lovers in this set is the occasionally baffling, yet utterly wretched "Cosmos: War Of The Planets." I have seen my share (OK, more than my share) of sub par sci-fi movies, but even by my standards this one is too much to take.

"Cosmos: War Of The Planets" concerns some humans with extremely bad, 1970s hair (when it isn't concealed under a ridiculous red hat that looks like a cross between a medieval jousting helmet and a horn of plenty) who find a civilization that is sending them bad electronic music from beyond the cosmos. They are under the direction of "Whiz" an electronic brain that calculates everything and is allegedly infallible (it is also less realistic than the computer from "Star Trek.")

Of course the crew, led by the rebellious, yet dashing (idiot) Captain lands on this strange planet where they find new life forms, namely guys dressed like Bat Boy in blackface. Oh, and did I mention that they also find a Stonehenge monument with a telekinetic capability as well? (Because that totally makes sense, because...now, wait...oh, never mind.) They also find a terrifying robot that looks like nothing more than a talking jukebox that plays Bach's "Toccata in D-minor" repeatedly on a Moog synthesizer, which is defeated in the stupidest manner imaginable (think Michael Palin in "Scott of the Antarctic" here.) The destruction of the robot brings about endless scenes of volcanic lava eruptions from some very large archive of stock footage. (It doesn't make any more sense when you watch it, either.)

The crew finally takes off from the planet, only to find the movie gratuitously extended by a subplot about saboteurs under the deceased (?) robot's control. Eventually Bat Boy and a traitorous guy in a puffy moon tunic and white cowboy boots get sucked out of an airlock, which leads to the most terribly, "I wish I were terribly clever, but I'm not" ending in the history of cinema.

This whole mess wants to be "2001" but in reality is more like something cut out of a Buck Rogers serial for being too stupid. It tries to make a statement about the complexities of "man versus machine" but the only thing it gets right is the subplot about the grubby, inaccurate, sensationalist press corps. For its unflaggingly accurate and unflattering portrayal of the media, this movie brings the whole set up to the three star level.

        Product Description

Youve never heard history presented like this by your teachers or in your text books. Why? Because most of them read from the same sheet of music, composed by scholars who lean hard to their own understanding and seek every opportunity to reject the Law and the Sovereignty of God. (Prov. 3:5) When confronted with something that doesnt fit into their revisionist lens, it normally gets swept under the proverbial rug. This docu-lecture lifts up the rug and explores some of the key events and figures of the past century some known and many not-so-well known and the impact they had on the social, political, ecclesiastical, cultural and economic landscape that have shaped our country and the world. This series will, in the words of one reviewer bring it all together, helping us understand where we have come from, where we are now, and where we should be heading as a nation. Dr. Gary North, renowned historian and scholar, combines a compelling style with razor-sharp Biblical perspective to transform history into His-story. A wealth of historical images also enhance the narrative. Disc 1 begins in 1925 with the infamous Scopes Monkey Trial, focusing on it as a turning point in American history. Disc 2, The Great Reversal, starts in 1926 and goes up through 1975. Out of the Shadows (Disc 3) takes the viewer up to the present time. Approximately three hours long, this series will give you a lot to think and talk about. GREAT FOR HOME-SCHOOLERS!
