Airdate: 05/27/07 The war in Iraq is like none we have ever fought before because 400,000 soldiers -- one third of the troops -- are regular citizens serving part-time in the National Guard and Reserve. For two years, Scott Pelley followed the soldiers and the families of 1st Battalion of the 133rd Infantry of the Iowa National Guard, and the result is an exceptional story that explores the experience of war with the soldiers in Iraq, as well as with their families back home in Iowa.

5 out of 5 stars "IRONMAN BATTALION".......2007-05-31

THIS WAS A GREAT DOCUMENTARY SHOWING ALL FACETS OF THE DEPLOYMENT. THE ONE HOUR RUNNING TIME COULD HAVE BEEN EXTENDED TO MANY MORE. THIS BATTALION HAS DONE NEARLY TWO YEARS STRAIGHT ON DEPLOYMENT AND HAS BEEN SECOND TO NONE. GREAT DOCUMENTARY OF THESE WARRIORS.

Roth), is out and proud about his comic reading penchant and longing to be a superhero. This science-fiction spoof is complete with mad scientist, Professor Ronald Richards, his nemesis and former partner, Hector Harris, who sabotages Ronald s secret experiment and a classic freak accident that causes superpowers! Even with input from science-fiction veterans Nichelle Nichols, Lou Ferrigno and Noel Neill, can Surge of Power thwart the evil plans of the mysterious Metal Master? Are capes in fashion? Why can't Gavin throw a ball? Are some of these dudes . . . ambiguous? Find out all this and more! Watch in amazement as Gavin explores what it means to be a hero, seeks a higher power, and decides whether to wear a cape in this exciting first installment of the "Surge of Power" saga, "The Stuff of Heroes!"

2 out of 5 stars Middling to Sometimes Awful.......2006-11-06

I try to avoid making general statements about the quality of acting in gay films, as it's usually somewhat sub-par, or should I say sometimes sub-par acting is okay if everything else falls together and then you have a decent film.

Not here.

Every scene feels like a bad high school play. I can't believe all these semi-stars showed up for this terrible mess. I feel especially bad for Michelle Nichols, clearly out of everyone's acting league here. Hers is the only decent acting during the entirety of this film. And the only few moments when you feel some sincerity and, perhaps, some meaning in all the messiness here.

There are a couple cute guys, and some nice costumes, and lots of nods to comic books. This is a rental, purely. I doubt you'll want to see it more than once.

2 out of 5 stars As gay as the day is long...........2006-10-15

Not knowing this is a gay movie, my friends and I rented this flick for a beer and movie night. Now, we've watched some BAD movies (check out Scorpio Maximus). Surge of Power was cheesey enough that we were able to laugh at it the entire way through. This movie can be funny if you don't mind laughing through one long gay joke.

1 out of 5 stars WHERE'S THE PORN?.......2006-06-11

While I am a fan of independent films since they allow talent that otherwise would go unnoticed to be seen, I was extemely dissappointed in this film which had the potential to become a classic. Instead we had banal dialogue, horrific acting, and clumsy editing which butchered any hope of making this a worthwhile endeavor. In fact, it seemed as if I was watching a fairly decent gay porn movie BUT WITHOUT THE PORN. Almost every scene seemed to be a set up for a sexual encouter which never came. The costume party scene could easily have been a faily decent orgy scene among those super heroes. THAT would have been interesting. Poor Nichelle Nichols oviously had no idea what she was getting into. Her five minute scene provided the only decent acting (she was Greta Garbo compared to the other actors). The whole movie would have been much better if every scene was of the caliber of her scene. The costumes were fine and the special effects were cute and would have really shined if the film was not reminiscent of a home movie.

3 out of 5 stars Campy and goofy, but at times a bit over-the-top.......2006-05-20

This film really does recall the feel of the old "Batman" tv show and the really bad 70's superhero films like "Spiderman" and "Captain America". The dialogue is campy, and it's meant to be. The effects and "fights" fall into the same category. I was awaiting the colorful and cartoonish "POW" effects to pop up on the screen. Think "Legends of the Superheroes" (if you can find it!).

There was also definitely a pop culture element to it. A lot of references to modern superheroes. And the discussion of the cape (as well as showing its pitfalls!). Ahhh, reminiscent of "The Incredibles". Ths isn't the big-budget superhero flicks like the "X-Men" or "Spiderman", and it's not meant to be. You're warned. And the geek factor was present. I loved the scene where the comic-book geeks get smacked down by the jocks, only to hear the jocks talk about playing on their X-Boxes. Priceless... "Why can they play X Box, but we can't read comic books?" And let us not forget our faithful hero doing the "Wonder Woman Spin". Again, priceless.

There were times, however, when this film went waaaay over the top. I respect the fact it's a small, indie, gay flick. And I appreciate it, Lord knows as a gay comic book fan I've been let down several times by Marvel's "gay" characters like Northstar, Karma, and Sunpyre. But there were times when I felt like it was "too gay". The double entendres got a bit tiresome after a bit, like a bad skit drug out too long. So I can see why some folks will be turned off by the movie.

It was a fun little film, didn't take itself too seriously, I can see some of my friends and I in it, but it needed to lay off the social agenda a bit. So three stars.

1 out of 5 stars AWFUL/ZERO STARS.......2006-04-27

Misleading. Boring. Thought it would be a fun movie for the family. Terrible acting, lousy dialogue, and directing. Social interactions only between men. No females other than a bit part with Nichelle Nichols. The DVD cover was quite misleading. I wish I could get my money back. What a disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars B Sci-fi movie that is wonderful!.......2007-03-18

This movie is a must see. It touches the soul. It gets inside and you can't help feeling the sensations of the characters. Everything about it is so simple and child-like in its manner, so much attitude... it will take you to a place you really should go.

4 out of 5 stars What can I say?.......2005-02-14

It was like being in some fifteen year old kids sci-fi daydream.
These kids get super powers, they take over their school, one of them goes evil and tries to kill the other three.
The clothes were great, the hair very Terminator2 meets Roswell.
The sex scene if you could call it that was short lived and didn't show anything and they all seemed to get REAL close real fast. It looked like off screen Pheobe and Reese were getting a lil action...from they body language.
This is an official B movie...all it needs is about 3 or 5 years, and it'll be a cult classic...Donnie Darko on five dollar a day shooting.
It's the cheesest thing on four wheels...but you can't stop thinking about it the next day.
So...I'd buy it if I were you. Be ahead of the curve for once huh?

5 out of 5 stars Awesomely Bad.......2005-01-31

I watched this movie about five times. It just kept getting more hilarious. Let's go through its high points shall we?

I'm not even going to go into the plot, the acting, or the screenplay because it still hurts to think about. The character developement was pure genius, though! Throughout the movie, the main character, Reese, gets better and better at jumping into his friend's convertible. Every female character, including the math teacher, gets sluttier and sluttier. Reese's hair also gets greasier and greasier. Brilliant!

Now some funny things start to happen in this movie. Did the crew want to play a joke on us, or were they just smoking something? Right after the kids get their powers...from a glowing rock of some sort...we start to see flashlights. It's only subtle at first, but later it looks like there's kids behind the camera just going CRAZY with flashlights. It starts to hurt your head a bit. But THEN the camera starts swaying back and forth as if it were hung from the ceiling of a rocky cruise ship. You start feeling nauseous...but then, to keep you hooked on the movie, there is AN ENORMOUS, RANDOM CROTCH SHOT with a "whoooooo weeeeeee" sound effect behind it. Speaking of sound, there is ONE SONG that plays throughout the whole movie, like some Marilyn Manson song but they couldn't afford Marilyn Manson so they made up their own song and just played it over and over and over...

Overall, I loved this movie. Three very mutated thumbs up.

4 out of 5 stars A good movie, worth watching........2004-12-19

The movie was good, not great, but nice. The other reviews here seem to be pure fantasy, as nobody slept with anyone, nobody got killed (well, one or two people, but no massacres), and only one of the group becomes truly evil; the rest simply play a few petty pranks. As I said before, it is worth seeing, especially if you've ever been picked on, but it doesn't have the quality one would find in a high-budget production. Oh well, suck it up folks, not every movie is perfect. Anyone who bashes this movie simply because it doesn't have the best camera work, and ignores the plot entirely in their review is a spoiled movie watcher indeed!

5 out of 5 stars awesome movie!.......2004-11-24

ok, just to voice a question I have, did all the other reviewers watch the same movie? 'Cause, like, one of them talked about the kids "holding the stone", which never, uh, happened. Likewise, I never heard anything about the stone being "from the gods" or anything. Okay, first of all, I thought this movie was pretty damn good considering it was very low-budget, for pretty similar reasons to those that have been stated before, namely the plot and also just the sheer coolness factor (who wouldn't want to read their teacher's mind when they get called on to get the answer?). Anyway, I just have some things to say in defense of this movie.
Yes, the special effects were nowhere near the level of those in something like The Matrix or Lord of the Rings, but for one, they still got the job done, and two, this movie had nowhere near the budget that most movies with killer effects have.
The other thing I heard complaints about was the realism. They're sitting on a huge magnet, and they find this stone that produces strong electrical impulses (at a low amperage, obviously, or they would have been dead). Hey, we know the brain uses electrical signals, so it's relatively believable that electrical impulses might affect it. Ok, I know it's unrealistic that something like that would give you psychic powers, but come on, Star Trek breaks laws of physics all the time. Sci-fi and fantasy by nature include things that would not work in real life. You want your movies to be perfectly explainable scientifically, how do you explain Harry Potter? How does mumbling Latin and waving a stick around cause something to fly? Face it, movies are by their nature unrealistic, or they would be documentaries.

      Description

First, Charlie speaks to New York Times correspondent John Burns about the Iraqi government's response to President Bush's plans for a troop buildup. Then, Senator Chuck Hagel, Republican of Nebraska, joins Charlie to discuss his strong reservations about the President's proposed buildup. Hagel contends that the buildup is too little too late and that it risks miring the U.S. even more deeply in Iraq. Finally, Charlie talks to one of the architects of the troop buildup policy, Deputy National Security Adviser J.D. Crouch, who defends the plan on the grounds that doing nothing would virtually guarantee catastrophic failure and risk throwing the entire region in chaos.

Air Date: 01-14-07 "If we start withdrawing now, we'll have a crisis on our hands in Iraq," President George Bush tells Scott Pelley in Bush's first interview since announcing an increase of troops in Iraq. Pelley had unprecedented access to the President in this candid interview, which took place at Camp David in Maryland and aboard the President's helicopter, Marine One. Bush says he's proud of America's actions in Iraq and believes Iraqis should be grateful to the United States for all it has accomplished in the country. Regarding Saddam Hussein, he tells Pelley, "We liberated that country from a tyrant." Yet public support for the war is low in the United States, Pelley points out, and asks Bush why that's so. Says Bush, "The Iraq war hasn't gone as well as I'd hoped at this point, and people are, you know, discouraged. They don't approve of where we are." Bush says waning support at home won't change his mind to increase troops in Iraq by 21,000. "I'm not gonna try to be popular and change my principles to do so," he tells Pelley. BONUS MATERIAL ON THIS CD: Excerpts from Scott Pelley's piece, "The President's Story." In September 2003 -- on the second anniversary of 9/11 -- Scott Pelley interviewed President Bush, Laura Bush, Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice, and others about the events of 9/11/01. The President recalls that he spent most of the day on Air Force One, eager to touch down so he could address the nation, but warned he could be in danger if he did so. It is a compelling, dramatic documentary about what happened to the President and his staff -- and to the country -- on 9/11, and how that day shaped the President's vision for the war on terror that was to follow.
