Remember back in the early 1980s when special-effects makeup artists were tripping over themselves to create the next big effect? The Howling boasted a fantastic werewolf transformation scene courtesy of makeup wizard Rob Bottin. Then along came Bottin's mentor, Rick Baker, with his own spectacular effects in this popular horror comedy directed by John Landis. An American Werewolf in London is more of a makeup showcase than a truly satisfying movie, but the film is effectively moody when David Naughton discovers that a wolf attack has turned him into a bloodthirsty lycanthrope. Jenny Agutter plays his love interest (watch out, he bites!), and who can forget Griffin Dunne as Naughton's best friend, an undead corpse who progressively rots away as the plot unfolds? All things considered, it's easy to see why An American Werewolf in London became a modern horror favorite. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
The best Werewolf.......2007-05-13
For a longtime this was my favourite film of all time, its not anymore, but it is still a genuine classic film, that deserves a place amongst the greatest horror films ever made.
The reasons for this are threefold:
Firstly the special effects by Rick Baker are amazing. Remember this was made 25 years ago, there was no digital effects then, what you see on the screen was either done with make-up or animatronic puppets. Rick Baker won an Oscar for his work on this film in 1982.
Secondly the blend of horror and comedy. If you watch the extras you will hear the director Jon Landis state that the film is not a comedy, although he admits it is funny. Some of the scenes are very funny and this comedy, sometimes black comedy works really well against the horror in the rest of the film. The horror in this film is brilliantly done with the double nightmare sequence being a particular favourite of mine.
Thirdly of course its a love story. The ending to the film is ultimately all about the love story, but once again John Landis confuses our emotions by immediately playing The Marcels great version of Blue Moon over the end credits.
The scene in the Slaughtered Lamb is a direct reference to the multitude of classic Hammer Films that featured a Pub that went silent went our hero entered it. You will spot quite a few well known faces in the Slaughtered Lamb including a fresh-faced looking Rik Mayall.
The extras on this edition are pretty good, with both Rick Baker and Jon Landis having some interesting things to say. Perhaps the most surprising was that Jon Landis wrote the script for this film in 1969. There's also some fascinating stuff on how Rick Baker created the amazing special effects.
Beware of the moon.
Excellent film, and not just for special effects.......2007-03-24
When people talk about this film, many speak of the classic transformation scene. Yes, it was an amazing achievement of special effects. Don't let that distract you, however, from the fact that this was a highly intelligent take on the werewolf genre. David Naughton is excellent as the american student come werewolf, and Griffin Dunne almost steals the movie as the gradually decomposing, but generally pleasant, corpse who continually reappears to his friend. There are classic campy jokes (e.g., when David tries to get arrested as a form of protecting others from his werewolf alter ego) as well as real drama, and an excellent supporting cast. Stay off the moors!
Darkly funny; you'll howl with laughter *wince*.......2007-03-11
OK, I couldn't resist that pun . . .
That said, I have loved this movie for years. Two American boys are hiking across England when they end up at a mysterious inn on a full moon night. Despite warnings, they decide to keep going and get lost on the moors. One is horribly killed (this is a gory, gruesome movie - not for the faint-hearted!) and the other . . . survives. Once he awakens from his coma, he moves in with his sexy nurse and begins to see the badly decomposing corpse of his friend following him around, telling him to kill himself before it is too late. As the bodies pile up, the corpses following him around become quite a group (this is the darkly funny part - I love the dead people - yeah, I'm a sick ******)
Like all traditional werewolf movies, this one ends badly (as in sadly); I always feel SO sorry for werewolves - they have a terrible lot in life. But it is a true classic of the werewolf genre, one I highly recommend to anyone who loves horror, werewolves, monster movies and dark humor.
A masterpiece.......2007-02-12
All these years later and it still holds up to this day. John Landis crafted a comedic and horiffic classic with An American Werewolf in London in 1981, forever changing the way werewolf movies, and possibly horror movies in general, are made. The story, if you don't know it by now, finds an American student (David Naughton) surviving a werewolf attack in England. Things get much worse though when he starts seeing his dead friend (Griffin Dunne) informing him to kill himself before the next full moon. Loaded with sharp humor, incredible script work and directing (Landis has never done better), and superb makeup effects by industry legend Rick Baker (many of which still hold up today), An American Werewolf in London is an all time classic that deserves it's legendary status. With a great assortment of DVD extras, and at this cheap price, picking this up is a steal, and it's a crime if you're a horror fan and it's not already part of your collection.
VERY INTERESTING.......2007-02-09
From the beginning to the end was excellent. The music played throughout the movie wasnt scary but funny in a scary twisted way. I think it is a great movie

David Cronenberg's 1986 remake of the science fiction classic about a scientist who accidentally swaps body parts with a fly is both smart and terrifying: an allegory for the awful processes of slow death and a monster movie with a tragic spin. Jeff Goldblum gives a masterful performance as a sweet, nerdy scientist whose romance with a writer (Geena Davis) makes him more fully alive. Next thing you know, a tiny oversight in an experiment causes him to transmogrify, gradually, into something more like an insect than a human. This is Cronenberg (Scanners, Videodrome) country, so expect The Fly to be a gross-out, but in the way that disease corrupts the body and can make a loved one unrecognizable on every level. This is one of Cronenberg's best films, and certainly one of the important movies of the 1980s. --Tom Keogh
Description
Seth Brundle, a brilliant but eccentric scientist attempts to woo investigative journalist Veronica Quaife by offering her a scoop on his latest research in the field of matter transportation, which against all the expectations of the scientific establishment have proved successful. Up to a point. Brundle thinks he has ironed out the last problem when he successfully transports a living creature, but when he attempts to teleport himself a fly enters one of the transmission booths, and Brundle finds he is a changed man.
Customer Reviews:
One of the few times a remake tops the original.......2007-07-05
David Cronenberg's remake of The Fly is one of the incredibly few times a remake tops the original in every way, shape, or form; and remains one of the absolute best films of Cronenberg's career. Jeff Goldblum stars as a brilliant scientist whose experiment goes awfully awry, and soon enough he is transforming into a an insect-like creature; much to the horror of an investigative journalist (Geena Davis) who he has been romancing, and who is also carrying his child. Like many of Cronenberg's other films, The Fly is a grisly allegory disguised as a horror film that's hard not to forget. Goldblum gives what very well may be the best performance of his entire career, and David is excellent as well. The makeup effects are brilliantly realized as well, with plenty of skin crawling and horiffic moments peppered throughout the film. This Two-Disc Special Edition features an excellent commentary from Cronenberg, as well as various production diaries as well that are quite insightful. All in all, The Fly remains one of the best films Cronenberg has ever crafted, and one of the most visionary films to come from the genre as well as one of the few times a remake tops the original in every way, shape, or form.
We've got to do this Seth.C'mon talk to the tape the world what's to know what your thinking?..F%^# is what I'm thinking!.......2007-06-24
I have always stated that I hate remakes of classic's.
Well that really is not the case,I should say I hate
a remake of a movie that was already perfect! John
(HALLOWEEN-THE THING)Carpenter said it best."IF YOU DID
IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME,WHY FIX SOMETHING THAT IS NOT BROKE!"
And believe me Amazon viewers when I first heard him say
that I have not let it leave me since. Now for 2000-2007
we are in a big time SLUMP for movies.Yes there are those
rare exceptions that we get gold, but again for 2000-2007
it is so far and inbetween, which leads me to this JEWEL!!
I was looking at my MASS HORROR coll. And saw THE FLY! I
said hhhmmm.Have not seen this one in awhile so slapped
it on.This is a remake that is so far supior to the ORIG.
I wont even go there for I will be lynched by every
die hard 50's sci/fi fanatic,which is a good point
is The Fly sci/fi or horror? HORRROR BABY,PURE HORROR
Jeff Goldblum gives his best performance(he was so good
and ment for the part, like Sir Perkins in the immortal
PSYCHO)in this as Seth Brundle who in ways is like a
male version of CARRIE WHITE.He wears diff.suits but
all the same style,he does not go out with friends?
he does not have any friends all he has is his keen
mind and he has a sickness to his stomach on travelling
Hence why he has build the TELEPORTER!David Cronenberg
who scared the bejesus out of me in 76 with SHIVERS
directs(in my opinion)his MASTERPIECE of the macabe!
His directing in this is awsome for we watch a man
fall in love, build a machine that will rival or even
surpass MICROSOFT,and we see his FALL!You really
feel for Jeff especially when he is deteriorating
slowly, his acting was topnotch him breathing heavy
and muttering the words"NO!..no" when he ask Geena
Davis to leave him and than really realizes what he
had just asked for really hits down deep! The look
of dispair in his face was brilliant and it's ashame
the Oscars did not take notice of his performance
for it was at least worthy of nomination. The Fly
believe it or not I compare to the Brilliant CARRIE
(76)For in both films we are given two characters
that are so pure in heart and shine in thier own
ways,we get to see them smile and love all to have
it blown to bits in the end. This is a fantastic
HORROR film and anyone who loves SCARY movies and
does not own this...Well I feel sorry for ya! I
recommend for HALLOWEEN instead of watching SAW SNORE
I-I MEAN FOUR,why not save the $$ and watch this instead!
You will have a far better movie..Believe me! BUY THE FLY!
NOTE:TOTALLY RECOMMEND WATCHING THIS WITH CARRIE(76)
FOR A DOUBLE (trick or) TREAT OF HORROR...just be sure
you bring kleenex for when you watch the lives of
Seth Brundle and Carrie White it's Hipawaya falls coming
down!
Never Let a Fly Accompany You Into a Teleporting Cabin. .......2007-05-04
"The Fly" (1986) is a remake of a famous horror-sci-fi of the same title from the fifties, amazingly it is a far better movie than the original one.
The story is as follows: a scientist is in the last stages of developing a revolutionary transport media: a teleporter.
Trying to impress a young & beautiful journalist he commits the indiscretion to show her his prototype.
To amend his slip Dr. Brundle recruits Veronica to write and film a diary of his investigation. Working together evolves into romance.
The prototype has a bug: it only teleportate inanimate things. When animate subjects are entered a mass of blood & bones appears at the receiving cabin. So Dr. Brundle after an illuminating dialog with Veronica fix the software bug and is ready to send an ape from one cabin to the other.
Unfortunately he gets jealous and drunk and instead of sending the baboon he performs the experiment personally with the unnoticed & unwelcome company of a fly.
Well.... You know how computers are... Dr. Brundle and the Fly get mixed (with subtlety, not as in the original version when a whole head and hand were exchanged between scientific and insect).
From here onwards a parallel with Kafka's "Metamorphosis" starts, until the end, providing the most fearful scenes to the movie.
Musical score in charge of Howard Shore is on a higher level than usual scores for this kind of films. That is not a surprise now, knowing how many awards Shore has earned.
Another plus of the film are the special effects done by Louis Craig and Ted Ross. Craig was nominated to a BAFTA award for this work.
Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Brundle and Geena Davis as Veronica perform over par rendering a credible mask to their characters.
This film is a very good one for sci-fi & horror film fans.

David Cronenberg: "Everybody's a mad scientist, and life is their lab....".......2007-04-29
"Be afraid...be very afraid!"
David Cronenberg's "The Fly"(1986) - is a remake of the 1950s movie of the same title in which a scientist is turned into a half- man, half-fly due to a fatal defect in the matter transmitter. In his remake, Cronenberg piles the eye -popping, jaw-dropping, and stomach-churning effects on the top of each other as the body of the unfortunate, mad but brilliant scientist (Jeff Goldblum in the role of his life -I've never seen him better) is hideously distorted and he is losing his humanity turning into the insect of the title. "The Fly" is a truly visceral experience which the director himself sees as a metaphor for aging: "In time we all turn into monsters". This very impressive movie is a classic of a "the fatal error of a mad scientist" sub-genre, "Everybody's a mad scientist, and life is their lab. We're all trying to experiment to find a way to live, to solve problems, to fend off madness and chaos" (David Cronenberg).
Be afraid, be very afraid..........2007-03-06
Seth Brundle (Goldblum) is a scientist who might just have invented the world's first teleporter. The only bug (pun intended) is the fact that it doesn't handle flesh and live teleportations. Ronnie (Geena Davis) is a writer for Particle magazine and will stay by his side, documenting via video his attempts to break through. Upon successfully teleporting a baboon, Seth gets cocky and decides to try and teleport himself; a fly slips into the pod while he teleports. At first, Seth finds newfound strength and agility, but pretty soon he's changing for the worst.
This is one of Cronenberg's best films, masterfully directed and executed. It's also Jeff Goldblum's finest performance to date! Not content on doing a mere remake (the original Fly (1958) is a much different film starring Vincent Price), Cronenberg brings this film to the next level--literally. It's filled with deep human drama and let's not forget the award-winning special effects! Top notch effects contribute in putting this film ahead of the pack of other mid-eighties sci-fi/horror flicks. The film overall has aged well (it's already been twenty years) if not for the eighties fashion statements.
I'm having a hard time figuring out which it is more; a sci-fi or a horror film? I guess it's a fusion of both (I gotta stop these bad puns!). Whether you see it for the first time or revisit it, Cronenberg's The Fly is a great gory, character-driven, profoundly human film. The second disc is chock full of special features: various documentaries and a making-of, screenplays, the original short story on which the original film is based, trailers for all the Fly movies ever made, deleted scenes, and much much more. A must have for any Cronenberg fan.

A graduate of Roger Corman's school of low-budget ingenuity, Joe Dante gained enough momentum with 1978's Piranha to rise to the challenge of The Howling, and he brought along Piranha screenwriter John Sayles to cowrite this instant werewolf classic. Makeup wizard Rob Bottin was recruited to create what was then the wildest onscreen transformation ever seen. With Gary Brandner's novel The Howling as a starting point, Sayles and Dante conceived a werewolf colony on the California coast, posing as a self-help haven led by a seemingly benevolent doctor (Patrick Macnee), and populated by a variety of "patients," from sexy, leather-clad sirens (among them Elisabeth Brooks) to an old coot (John Carradine) who's quite literally long in the tooth. When a TV reporter (Dee Wallace) arrives at the colony to recover from a recent trauma, the resident lycanthropes prepare for a howlin' good time.
Dante handles it all with equal measures of humor, sex, gore, and horror, pulling out all the stops when the ravenous Eddie (Dante favorite Robert Picardo, later known as the Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager) transforms into a towering, bloodthirsty werewolf. (Bottin's mentor Rick Baker would soon raise the makeup ante with An American Werewolf in London.) As usual, in-jokes abound, from characters named after werewolf-movie directors, amusing cameos (Corman, Sayles, Forrest J. Ackerman), and hammy inserts of wolfish cartoons and Allen Ginsberg's "Howl." It's best appreciated now as a quintessential example of early-'80s horror, with low-budget limitations evident throughout, but The Howling remains a giddy genre milestone. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
Fun and Entertaining Werewolf Movie.......2007-05-11
I love Horror films. When talking about the many sub-genres involved and the low percentage of quality horror films, some films stand out as merely "important" rather than achieve a level of greatness (Last House on the Left, Friday the 13th). The Howling is such a film.
When looking at the great werewolf films out there and considering the times they were released, the original Wolfman stands next to An American Werewolf in London as perhaps the greatest Werewolf films of there respective times. The Howling may very well be a challenge to the latter of these two films as the best of it's time. Both were released in 1981, but the Howling was developed before the Landis project. It doesn't really matter, as I do believe An American Werewolf in London to be better film but the Howling is an important film along with being entertaining. Neil Jordon's In the Company of Wolves came out a few years later and is my personal favorite of any in this sub-genre but all that aside, The Howling is a true horror classic and a werewolf movie fan's treasure. It is a must have of hardcore horror fans because it contains and helped identify the many traits we've seen before and after it.
The Howling starts off in a similar vein to that of the original Dawn of the Dead, putting the idea of a werewolf into the mainstream media (disguised as a serial killer) and it ends on a similar note. This allows us to sort of picture this mythical creature on scale with today's society, or at least that of 1981. It's dated and it's thrown right on TV so we can all feel connected. The film is handled as a kind of film noir at first and slowly brings itself from that and into the werewolf sub-genre in fairly atypical fashion. The acting is really only good by it's main protagonist, whose name escapes me. It also has it's share of character actors who we've enjoyed in these kinds of films before. The Howling isn't afraid to laugh at itself either, which I think is almost a must in horror films...it interesting how almost all other notable werewolf movies (i.e. Dog Soldiers, An American Werewolf in London) also make us laugh. This helped me in some respect to look past a lot of the dated special effects and to laugh at them. The film gets more microcosmic later on and sets itself up for some good scares and some eerie and outstanding howls in the night. Unfortunately, the film ends a bit too quickly, but the Howling remains almost as important as An American Werewolf in London for bringing this great myth back to the forefront of horror films again.
Mystified by all of the glowing reviews...I think "The Howling" sucks!!.......2007-01-12
I must confess that I watched this movie after having seen "Howling II" which is the worst werewolf movie I've ever seen except for "An American Werewolf in Paris". Thinking that the original had to be a lot better than the sequel, I watched the original "The Howling" with an open mind especially given the good reviews this movie has received, and I came away very disappointed in this movie. Indeed, despite the good acting (Dee Wallace-Stone, especially for a horror movie), "The Howling" just fell flat on its face as a horror movie. To be perfectly frank, I just did not find the werewolves to be frightening or scary at all...I thought they looked ridiculous, and the way the movie developed was just terrible in my opinion. In turn, "The Howling" comes off like a joke more than anything else. Ostensibly, the story seems quite compelling as a newscaster is attacked by a maniacal killer and then goes with her husband to a retreat to recover. What transpires at the retreat, at least in theory, would seem to make for a scary movie, but the creators of this flick just blew it with the ridiculous looking werewolves, poor character development and, to a large degree, a lack of action or a lack of compelling action. What action there was appeared absolutely laughable and totally ridiculous. I just don't think the creators of this flick knew what to do with this movie when they got to the part at the retreat. When I wasn't laughing at how terrible this movie was, I was VERY BORED watching "The Howling". Frankly, I just thought the movie lacked luster and completely sucked. Well, at least it is not as bad as "An American Werewolf in Paris", but that isn't saying much! I would not recommend "The Howling" to any individual that is serious about his/her horror movies. If all you want is some laughs and cheap thrills, maybe you will like this garbage, but I recommend sticking with "An American Werewolf in London" as it is, in the opinion of this reviewer, the greatest werewolf movie of all-time. That being said, I must admit that I am completely mystified by the glowing reviews this movie gets...some people call "The Howling" a great horror movie, but I just call it rubbish.
The Howling.......2007-01-10
I like this movie for the special effects. I think this is one of the first movies that came out with these effects for the carecters. It is also a very scarry movie and I like that.
Enjoyable werewolf flick........2007-01-08
Not the best film on werewolves that I have ever seen, but I enjoyed it well. Well acted for the most part, well made by Joe Dante (who would do a great job on The Gremlins in 1984), and very good special effects. But I warn you to stay away from the sequels, they only hurt this movie. I would call this a semi classic that will definately survive the test of time. This film is good and I recomend it to fans of horror or werewolves.
One of the greatest werewolf productions ever!.......2006-11-08
Today`s production standards and special effects make very difficult to understand the historical importance of this film, specially for GINGER SNAPS fans or any contemporary horror film.
The thing is, special effects exist in an effective way, only in a GOOD script, a great, creepy, menacing story like this one. Who cares about digital efects in a great high budget production, if the result is you taking off your seat. The howling was one of the first werewolf films that explores, along with "american werewolf in london", the subject of the transformation from regular guy to man-eating hellhound monster. It made a remarkable achievement in the use of short shots of different transforming parts of the body, attaching them into a full sequence of horrifying effects of latex and creepy sounds. The result was one of the most terrifying transformations, and revolutionary werewolf designs, according to the experience and personality of each character (see the final sequence, a very touching piece of work). All this coming along with one of the strongest most frightening werewolf stories ever filmed.
The howling is a smart horror cinema classic, worth be seing and enjoyed, specially in this edition, a very high quality and complete one, packed with interesting extras. Even more clearly, this movie is STILL THE BEST WEREWOLF MOVIE EVER MADE!

Customer Reviews:
Bettis was Brilliant!.......2007-05-31
This was a good episode-- on the surface a light hearted, tongue in cheek spoof, but once it settles in, it becomes clear that this is a macabre, twisted, bizarre piece.
Bettis turns in a terrific performance as an introverted, nerdy lesbo scientist who becomes involved with another lady... uh, and eventually some bug from Brazil plays a role in a menage a trois type deal.
If you are into cult horror films with a surrealness, then check this one out. The focus is on the characters and not so much the gore or suspense. A very good entry which would have made 4 stars had it not been for the rushed, punchline ending.
A unique and sexy Masters of Horror story!.......2007-05-12
Insect lover and entomologist Ida (Angela Bettis) discovers a new species of bug that has been mysteriously delivered to her at her doorstep. A very alien-esque insect that's aggressive and dangerous unlike anything she's ever seen before, she falls for a gorgeous lesbian chick named Misty (Erin Brown a.k.a. Misty Mundae)as the two become close lovers. The weird bug however infects Misty as soon it will make her into something completely dangerous and ugly that it needs to feed.
A very steamy and gory little shocker from Lucky McKee (director of "May" and "The Woods") with terrific acting and a well thought out storyline. There some hot lesbian action here for the guys and excellent make-up effects by KNB EFX ("Kill Bill", "Hostel", "Army of Darkness"), this is one of the best episodes yet thanks to the genius of Lucky McKee much like his "May" movie.
This DVD has great extras like audio commentary by writer-director Lucky McKee with cast and crew, trailers, still gallery, interviews with cast and Lucky McKee, and bio of the director.
Also recommended: "The Fly (1958 and 1986)", "The Wasp Woman (1958)", "Basket Case", "Earth Vs. The Spider" (2001 version), "Brain Damage", "Deer Woman", "Re-Animator", "Creepshow", "Dagon", "The Toxic Avenger", "Altered States", "The Return of the Fly", "The Fly II", "Ginger Snaps", "An American Werewolf in London" and "Hulk".
Bug Girl.......2007-04-11
"Sick Girl" is Master of Horror member Lucky McKee's entry to the Showtime series. Shy lesbian Ida (Angela Bettis) is an etymologist who develops a crush on artist chick Misty (Erin Brown). Ida gets a mysterious package from Brazil containing a type of bug never seen before. After Misty moves in the strange bug disappears, soon after Misty begins acting strange. Ida confides her weird suspicion to her misogynistic but basically good natured assistant Max (Jesse Hlubik). This is a rather odd entry to the "Masters of Horror" vault, though not unwarranted. It combines sci-fi, horror, and black comedy to get it's effect. The first half of the film is basically a lesbian sitcom, "The L Word" taken much lighter. It is here we meet and begin to care for our cast, and my hat off to McKee, this is one of the best ensemble of the series so far. Ida by herself is a kooky character, but I guess we're used to Bettis doing that ("May" and "Carrie"). Brown has the harder job; she has to go through so many changes of character, and she has to be convincing, she did good. Ida and Misty are so cute together, and their relationship seems pretty convincing and real. I bought it. The sexist assistant could have been annoying, but he was too nonchalant to have that held against him, and you can tell he genuinely likes Ida. The best part of the movie was Ida's relationship with Lady Bug, a 10 year-old-girl who lives with her grandmother. The little girl looks up to Ida and sees her as a hero, a small but nice touch about acceptance. The grandmother is the apartment super, who is the only weak link, a stereotypical old bat who doesn't agree with Ida's lifestyle. Now that we have the characters in place, that's when the weird stuff starts happening, and when bad things happen to good people, we care. So I enjoyed it, even if it was a horror-comedy, a genre I wish would go away.

*contains spoilers*
Nothing horrifying in this movie/episode, the one bloody scene is visually downplayed, but it's an original relationship drama. The main character Ida talks in a robotic voice which I didn't get used to until halfway through. The other four key characters are her fratboy laboratory co-worker who she gets along well with, their conflicting personality types never made into an issue. Her conservative landlady. The landlady's granddaughter. And her new girlfriend, Misty, whose arrival co-incides with that of a mysterious bug which was intended to keep Ida and Misty apart but ends up bringing them closer together when it impregnates both of them. How sweet.
Love bites.......2007-03-07
Promising horror director Lucky McKee (May, The Woods) makes his Masters of Horror debut with this first season contribution. Sick Girl re-unites McKee and his May star Angela Bettis (Toolbox Murders) who plays a bug obsessed entomologist. After receiving a package containing a very large, and very aggressive, kind of bug the likes no one has ever seen before, she embarks in a heated affair with a shy girl (Erin Brown, better known as sexy softcore queen Misty Mundae) who has a few secrets of her own. From that point on, a bug bite turns both girl's worlds upside down, especially when one becomes the host and carrier of the bug's offspring. Offering ample amounts of creepiness and skin crawling fun, Sick Girl is one of the more fun entires in Showtime's Masters of Horror anthology. Not to be taken seriously one bit, Sick Girl reminds us how fun the horror genre can be when someone just takes an idea and runs with it. If there's any down points about Sick Girl, it's that Bettis comes off as annoying in her role frequently throughout the episode, but besides that, Sick Girl is a sick blast. All in all, Lucky McKee's Sick Girl only shows more promise from the newbie horror master, and this installment is one of the better entires in the Masters of Horror series.

Product Description
Hugh Grant, Amanda Donohoe and Catherine Oxenberg star in this mix of heart-stopping horror and campy humor. James D'Ampton (Grant) returns to his country castle in England. Legend has it that James' distant ancestor once slayed the local dragon-a monstrous white worm with a fondness for the sweet flesh of virgins.
The young Lord dismisses the legend as folklore, until archaeology student, Angus Flint, unearths a massive reptilian skull and the ancient worship site of a pagan snake god on James' property.
When James' virtuous girlfriend, Eve (Oxenburg), suddenly disappears, he and Angus set out to investigate the foreboding cavern said to be the worm's lair, where a centuries-old mystery begins to uncoil.

Wittily updated from one of Dracula author Bram Stoker's lesser-known horror novels, The Lair of the White Worm is a camp classic that only Ken Russell could have delivered. It's got all the perversity one expects from the bombastic director of Tommy and Altered States: sensible plotting, intelligent dialogue laced with double entendre, graphic imagery with Boschian intensity, and a mischievous disregard for good taste and decorum. In other words, it's heretically hilarious, especially when skeptical Lord D'Ampton (fresh-faced Hugh Grant, in one of his earliest films) begins to suspect that seductive neighbor Sylvia (Amanda Donohoe, game for anything) is connected to the local legend of a monstrous serpent that feeds on sacrificial virgins. Evidence mounts with the help of a local archaeologist (Peter Capaldi) and two endangered sisters (Catherine Oxenberg, Sammi Davis), and Russell infuses Stoker's grisly plot with his inimitable brand of blasphemy, including a gouged eyeball, a venom-splattered crucifix, Roman soldiers raping nuns (in a delirious hallucination sequence), and some of the funniest one-liners since Young Frankenstein. Prudes beware; everyone else
enjoy! --Jeff Shannon

Guilty pleasure.......2007-06-14
I watched it. I liked it. I felt guilty watching it and loving it. I had to buy it. Hugh Grant was okay. Catherine Oxenburg was gorgeous. Sammi Davis was lovable. Amanda Donahoe was outrageous as she stole the show. I agree with those who say this film is not for everyone. I can see where many might be offended by this movie. There is some sacreligious elements to this and some slightly sick scenes (specifically in the cave), but if you're willing and you have a sense of humor, this is a great version of vampirism. The song "Dunston Worm" is awesome when it is performed in public. If you can sacrifice good taste for a good time, this film might be for you.
no *'s.......2006-10-17
"Hey lets put Hugh Grant on the cover and maybe people will buy it." Well I didnt buy it for Hugh however, I did buy it because Fangoria holds it up pretty high. My curiosity got the best of me and, I wanted to know why they liked it so much. I still wanna know! The movie was plain boring! The script introduces one annoying character after the next. Its a huge mess, with bogus effects and, a major lack of suspense or terror! I wanted to find something good I may be able to say about this movie but, the only thing that comes to mind is that atleast it ends. Obviously there are those that get it and those that dont.. I am proud to say... I dont.
Not a bad movie, but not really scary.......2006-10-11
It was more english kind of humor. A very young Hugh Grant playing the snotty land owner, before he came to America to make his fortune playing snotty characters here. It was ok.
Surprisingly delightful.......2006-09-17
Although it's a B movie, Hugh Grant, Amanda Donohoe and Catherine Oxenberg are a hilarious triangle. Cheesy effects, yet Amanda Donohoe is as sinister a temptress as you could hope for and Hugh Grant (or perhaps just his character) is just as clueless as can be.
I love this movie and I was so tempted to give it 5 stars, but I know it's an acquired taste. This is one movie I haven't been able to force my friends to watch because it's never on. It's now on my wish list so I can look forward to, um, enlightening them.
Not a 5 star movie..........2006-02-09
This was a good movie, mildly entertaining with some unusual aspects and some nice looking actresses, etc. But this is not a 5 star movie by any means. It has several boring parts and is a little hoky.

dreadful.......2007-05-17
This is a dreadful film which shows little understanding of the playwrights original intention and particularly the humor inherent in the original script. Instead the director and cast go for mugging, pratfalls and a wild and now hopelessly outdated "60's" feeling -
Disappointing.......2006-07-25
One would think that the combination of Eugene Ionesco, Zero Mostel, and Gene Wilder would be a guaranteed success. Sadly, such is not the case with the American Film Theatre production of "Rhinoceros" as committed to film in 1974. While the theme of maintaining one's identity as everyone else goes along with the herd (originally a metaphor for Nazism, McCarthyism, etc.) is intact, Ionesco's text has been so altered that is is destroyed. Here it becomes subject to slapstick, poor unfunny added situations, exaggerated performances, and clumsy direction. The film has been criticized for "staginess," but that is not the real problem. It makes use of camera movement, external sets, etc.; it just has no rhythm. It is a trial to get through it--certainly not the case with Ionesco's original, either on stage or as read to one's self. Gene Wilder is always diverting but the character he portrays has been so tampered with that it's just unpleasant and tedious. Karen Black's character is an embarrassment as are all the other minor characters. The only bright spot in this mess is Zero Mostel, whose fifteen minutes on screen are amazing, his transformation from a dandified fussbudget into a destructive rhinoceros an acting tour-de-force; done without makeup, it encapsulates the essence of the piece. But that's it: the other ninety minutes are dreary and awful.
The DVD is very well transferred, but the extras are disappointing: e.g., an "interview" with Zero Mostel is simply text to be read frame by frame, and an article about Ionesco and the play is simply an on-screen text repetition of the liner notes. There is a very long interview with the director, in murky sound; after seeing his incompetence demonstrated in this film, no one will have any desire to see him drone on about it.
Misunderstood Classic!.......2004-02-06
I first saw this adaptation in a college film class and have been trying to get a VHS or DVD since. Yes, it is supposed to be funny, but funny odd not funny ha-ha. Absurdist theater takes normal behaviors and exaggerates them so we see how weirdly we act and how distorted our values sometimes are. The character Zero Mostel plays is fastidious in his morals and attire, but even he changes. The character Gene Wilder plays resists to the end, but has to admit the sound of a rhinoceros is stranglely compelling. Are our civilized behaviors just neurotic expression or are we really superior to animals? Oh, by the way, I do find this movie ha-ha funny. But maybe it's a matter of taste.
Hilariious Americanized Ionesco.......2003-09-14
One of the great things about this DVD is that it includes an interview, taped in 2002, with the film's director, Tom O'Horgan. (He was the guy responsible, along with Galt McDermot, for the original Hair on Broadway). Among other things, O'Horgan talks about the conversion of the original Eugene Ionesco play into a cnematic version, giving great credit to the screenwriter, Julian Barry.
And with good reason. While Ionesco is one of the great absurdist playwrights, his sensibility is decidedly European. This means that the sense of humor expressed in the original play would very likely fall on deaf (American) ears, to a large extent. What the screenwriter has done is to essentially Americanize the dialogue, making it truly hilarious in many scenes.
And of course it helps to have a great cast. The two leads, Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder, are perfect for their roles, especially Mostel who is funny enough to make you micturate in your trousers, if you catch my drift. Seen first as a man overly concerned with appearance and manners, he descends, in the course of the film, to the level of the titular creature.
The story is of a small town which is beset by a bizarre plague, if one can call it that--the transforming of humans into rhinos. Ionesco was commenting on the radical changes occurring in society as the Cold War became a reality--meaning, more than anything else, as people had much more to be afraid of than they did before. Fear makes us lose our rationality, become less human. Even become rhinoceri.
This is a really funny film that is just as good now--maybe even better--than it was when originally released in 1974. In supporting roles, Percy Rodriquez and Joe Silver are especially good--staunch representatives of corporate America. Karen Black does a great job as a sexy woman who Stanley (Gene Wilder) works with and is smitten with and eventually anguishes over as he is the sole remaining human in a town full of rhinos.
Much, much better than you might think. Definitely recommended.
A movie about the absurd.......2003-07-27
Stanley is a bored, alcoholic young man who feels disconnected from the rest of society. His best friend John is contstantly trying to help him to fit in and get over his feelings of awkwardness. One Sunday morning, while the two are at a restaurant, a rhinoceros rampages through the streets. Soon, Stanley notices more and more rhinoceroses and begins to realize that everyone in town is turning into them. Determined not to change, he confronts John with the problem only to watch his transformation in a rhino. As the rest of the world changes, including Daisy, the woman of his dreams, Stanley desparately tries to transform, but realizes that he can't and that he won't.
This is a good adaptation of the absurdist play by Eugene Ionesco and changes the setting from a small French town to a big US city. Wonderful performances by Gene Wilder as Stanley and Karen Black as Daisy; and a standout performance from Zero Mostel as Stanley's friend John. Tom O'Horgan's direction is definitley unique, making it feel as though the viewer is watching a stage play. The only drawback is the bad '70s music that doesn't fit.
The DVD has some great extras including an interview with Tom O'Horgan, an interview with Zero Mostel, information about Eugene Ionesco, and the original movie trailer, to name a few. The trailer gives an idea of how the studio marketed this film as a comedy, even though it views more along the lines of a drama or a very, very dark comedy.
Having read the play in college, I enjoyed this adaptation. If you enjoy a movie that makes you think, then this is definitely the movie for you.

Description
Being a teen is tough enough for Kathy Cauldwell (Scarlett Johansson) without having to be the target of her little brother George's constant practical jokes. But life really gets crazy when Dad (Judge Reinholt) and mom leave for France and George is magically transformed into a pig via some ancient rocks belonging to their nanny Matilda (Eva Mendes). Only Matilda's Mexican Grandmother's voodoo can break the spell, and Kathy, Matilda, George the Pig, and George's friend Freud (Alex D. Linz) take off on a madcap adventure south of the border to find her. But once they do, things go from bad to worse when George is pignapped by the local butcher. Now, the race is on for the group to save George from becoming bacon, turn him back into a boy, and get back home before the kid's unsuspecting parents return.

A Very Beautiful Leading Lady: Scarlett Johansson. .......2005-06-03
I haven't seen this but i plan on renting it. But all i have to say is that this movie (from other places i have searched)has very few critiques on it-if that is the case, i assume the movie must be very warm and funny. (i have seen the trailer though) and It has the lovely Scarlett Johansson(14 or 15 years of age in 1999) and famous ex star of the 80's actor Judge Rhinehold. These are the days in where Scarlett Johansson was not even famous at all, she was just there, this was pre-scarlett johansson, before her success in lost in translation and girl with a pearl earring. i have not seen it but i am going by the trailer and i say get it, this is a gem, you can't go wrong with a johansson film. they all have substance! Movies are really nice, you get to see the people or actors or actresses you like, admire, immortalized forever on video/film. Scarlett Johansson is one nice cup cake.
Great film for kids.......2003-04-18
For your kids or the kid in you, this film is funny, endearing and warm.
Fun family film.......2003-01-11
My daughter taped this off nick last year and she watches it over and over--and it's very funny. My son also loves the nanny in it.
This Pig Went to Mexico.......2002-11-30
My family saw this at a screening and laughed out loud--and I wasn't bored like in Atlantis. Good video.
Great Stuff.......2001-12-04
I saw this movie on Saturday night on Nickelodeon and I have to tell you I loved it! Is there a sequel?
