Double Trouble.......2007-05-07
These two movies are a good example of 50s SCI-FI at its best. Earth Vs. The spider is good because it adds a bit of 50s Malt Shop Era to the movie. Its seems the spider shots may have been taken from an earlier Sci-FI movie Tarantula.War Of The Colossal Beast is movie #2 in this Twin Cult Classic Set.I remember watching this movie as a kid and still enjoy it. Would recommend this double SCI-FI Collection to all 50s Sci-Fi Addicts.
WHO CAN RESIST SUCH A DOUBLE FEATURE?.......2007-04-27
Two great cheese fests for the price of one! "Earth vs.the Spider" is excellent. "War of the Colossal Beast" is the sequel to "The Amazing Colossal Man". Strange that the two Colossal films weren't put on this double feature DVD? The Amazing Colossal Man" is not available on DVD at this time. As it is " War of the Colossal Beast" is pretty funny...unintentionally of course! After reading some other reviews, I have learned that the rights to the two Colossal movies are owned by different people....too bad :-( ...I hope they release the first one soon.
Our Mr. Big.......2007-03-18
For this baby boomer who grew up in the 50's, Bert I. Gordon was my George Lucas. He brought amazing creatures right into our movie theatres. In retrospect, I'm very grateful to him for many hours of enjoyment in that dark movie house. Yeah, these effects are nowhere what is done now, but I didn't know that at that time. I was just a kid in awe of what was on the screen. I loved "The Spider" (as it was called back then). The remake was a real letdown for those of us who enjoyed seeing the overhead shot of a girl screaming her head off, with her 50's skirt caught in the door of her car as the spider approaches. I love the idea that rock 'n roll awakens the spider, who then goes on a rampage all over town. And, yeah, that poor baby alone on a deserted street was very a disturbing sight. Mr. BIG was all about bringing entertainment to the massses, ready to scare us, thrill us and giving us our money's worth for an afternoon. "War of the Colossal Beast" was another reason that made going to the movies on a weekend just a thrill. Thank you, Mr. Gordon.
MEMOREIS MEMORIES WOW.......2007-02-08
i remember being 11 yrs old and going to see these movies. the spider one i had to get because way back then i hung around the olive recreation center in burbank ca.
the rock-n-roll band in this movie was headed by my friend dick de augustine ,his brother and paul the sax player. they were old in their early 20's.i watched that again 49 yrs later and what memories. now it looks corny but then it was scary. i wish that the amazing colossal man was available also but the sequel is very good.if you remember these movies. buy them because they are not shown very often
the prints are crystal clear but the price "go for it"
Great old monster movies!.......2007-01-09
I'm a sucker for the old classic black and white monster movies and these two are just perfect if you like that kind of movie. There's nothing like a giant spider chasing you, or a giant man with an agenda ticked off at the world! Sure they're corny by today's standards, but that's part of their charm and they are great entertainment. Safe for the family also - no swear words, nudity, etc. What a refreshing change!

Quentin vs Not So Tough Cop.......2006-03-10
Quentin works as a security guard at a scientific research facility. But Quentin dreams of more. He wants to be more like the heroes in the comics he reads, particularly the Arachnid Avenger. The lab he works at just happens to be working with spiders. When unknown assailants break into the facility, Quentin allows himself to be injected with a spider serum.
Soon Quentin's life changes. He is stronger and more confident. He seems to be making inroads with the attractive woman next door. But the changes don't stop there. He begins to become monstrous but manages to hold onto a small level of control. Dan Aykroyd plays a cop who has lost his nerve. As he watches his wife fool around he tries to track the mysterious hero.
This was interesting. Flashes of comic books lent to the feel of the film but Quentin and the comic store guy seemed a little childish. The other guard's sympathy for the spider test subjects was also a little odd but it did seem to all fit together. There was of course a clip from the original (still a classic) and some good acting from Aykroyd. All in all it was a pretty fun little film that would appeal to monster and superhero fans.
Almost unwatchable.......2004-08-22
I regret buying this one, I couldn't even finish watching it. If you are intrigued by the positive reviews, rent don't buy!
the best spider man rip off of all time.......2004-07-09
this is a spider man rip off but with a far darker tone.dan akroyd plays a serious cop whose trying to get his man.he doesnt do very well and should stick to comedy.kids will get scared.all the money was devoted to the monster in this one and not anything else.the monster is a geek who is enduring a really slow metamorphisis into a man sized spider.its the best spider man rip offive ever seen.there are some parts with nasty spider stuff,so the queasy should look away.there are no hot chicks just some priss the geek pines over all the time.it will probably get a bad rap,but its good.this is the best dan akroyd film but thats because all hisfilms suck.the man spider guy is really neat.id even watch a sequel.
Nerds, spiders, and noir setting! Oh My!.......2004-07-05
I'm a fan of B-style movies. So when I heard of the new Creature Feature series, I thought this series would be fun! Well, I found "Earth Versus the Spider" to be merely average, with occasional touches of greatness.
When nerdy security guard Quentin's partner is killed by thugs, Quentin takes matters into his own hands by injecting himself with a mysterious 'spider' juice, which temporarily gives him really cool powers. Unfortunately, the side affects are monstrous- quite literally, thus begins a "Jekyll and Hyde" story for the modern age.
Pro's: I liked the film 'noir' setting. The cool costumes, and the acting.
Cons: I just didn't like the Quentin character. Perhaps if he'd been a more likeable guy, I would've felt sorry for him. As it was, he was just a little too weird and a little too nerdy for me to care what happened to him. Plus, despite the comic book interest he wasn't nerdy enough.
I much prefer "She Creature" another title in this series..
Classic horror.......2004-05-22
Good ol'fashioned horror. About a bit of a loner reclusive type guy and discovers a way to become the opposite of what he is and his fantasy of becoming a superhero but something terribly goes wrong. Well done flick. Has its gross moments but never over the top. Worth adding to your horror collection if you have one.
