Guilty until proven innocent.......2006-10-23
This film stats out with the standard and fun 50's sci-fi formula. We ar treated to a thesis on the use of radar. Something foreign approaches Santa Monica (a beautiful beach community off the cost of southern California.) Then we are confronted by a stranger in a diving suite with pipes coming out of his helmet. It is only human nature that we should beat the snot out of him. But wait he defends himself. Could this deadly stranger have anything to do with the UFO? As he is tracked down and cornered by the authorities, he ditches his fancy suite and we are in for a surprise.
Not as much of a shootemup as it is a study of physiology.
One man's menace is another man's martyr..........2006-06-23
Strange, and kinda sad, flick about an invisible alien who crashes his ship into the Pacific Ocean and finds Californians attacking him left and right for being, well, an alien. Now, I've been to California, and while they usually don't greet aliens with warmth and friendship, I've never seen people swinging or shooting at them. I mean, who would watch their rich yuppie brats or cook their food? Then again, I never saw an invisible alien during my time there. But wait, how could I? He'd be invisible...I'm giving myself a headache. Anyway, this alien kills some people in defense, gets hunted around, has his space helmet stolen...which is pretty mean since he needs it to live...tries vainly to communicate with humans.,,this guy just wants to go home. After spending 26 years on this planet, I can understand why. The scientists and feds chasing the alien corner him up inside of a room with a giant telescope, and he finally suffocates to death, therby becoming visible for a few moments before evaporating. Sad, sad movie. Reminds me of those old 60s Marvel monster comics I used to buy at Fat Jacks Comic Crypt as a kid for pennies on the dollar to their value today. You know, the ones where the alien comes peacefully to Earth, but the stupid humans get scared and kill him? Outsiders identify with each other I guess. Cop the Mills Creek 50 Sci-Fi Classics package. PFS is in there, along with Teenagers From Outer Space (my fav), Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, Mesa of Lost Women, Eegah and a gaggle of bad European space flicks. You know you want it.
Stinkeroo from Space.......2006-03-20
I am a fan of bad science fiction films but this one is too bad even for me. For all practical purposes you can skip the first half, which consists mostly of cars driving around. Things pick up a bit when the monster shows up, only he turns out to be invisible, so he has to wear a diving helmet on his head so people can locate him. The best part is the end, when the monster is finally shown; he's pretty creepy looking, although you only get to see him for about a minute at the most. Hmmm...maybe you should just watch the last five minutes of the film and forget the rest of it.
Transparent Phantom Alien Creature.......2006-02-03
The picture on the box looks much better than the actual phantom, but this movie has its moments. Though the film was low budget, and there are some silly moments, the film tries to be somewhat serious, and rather than the usual approach to aliens in the 50s, meaning shoot to kill, dissect them, and then ask questions, the people who encounter the phantom make an attempt at communication. If they would have had better gadgets, perhaps they could have spoken.
A space ship goes from Alaska to California, which seems awfully sensible if you consider the weather in the two states. Unfortunately, the landing is a bit rougher than the alien had planned, and the alien has to literally come ashore. Unfortunately for the alien, bizarre-looking space suits were out of season at that time, and the local fashion police attacked him. The space suited phantom had to kill in order to defend his right to express himself through his uniform.
Unfortunately, killing people is mostly frowned upon in California, so the local gendarmes attempt to track the being down, using super incredible whiz-bang detection equipment. I was confused as to whether I should be impressed or laugh, so I finally chose rolling my eyes each time I saw a cheesy "dish" car. Just think, a satellite dish on the roof of a car might be all the rage today.
Eventually there is quite a crowd chasing one, poor defenseless alien around. The alien decides to ditch his space suit to take advantage of his natural invisibility. Needing to breath the special mixture provided by his suit seemed to advise against taking his space suit off. The next thing you know the space suit dissolves, except for the helmet.
There is a brief moment where it looks like everyone was going to sit around a campfire and sing "Kumbaya" when a goofy reporter sets off a flash bulb, frightening the alien and generally decreasing the low opinion of everyone with respect to reporters. The frightened alien breaks his helmet, which then quickly dissolves, and then makes a break for the observatory. Fortunately, his pursuers have ultraviolet lights that enable them to see the alien in a flashy blurry way, so that we can see the exciting climax to the movie.
This movie was decent. I enjoyed seeing an alien in the position of inadvertent visitor who just wanted to live, while there were also people who wanted him to live. The first half of the movie is slow, but after everyone ends up in the laboratory building things start picking up. It is too bad that the atmosphere needed by the alien was not readily available. If you consider yourself a fan of classic science fiction, I urge you to watch this one because it takes a different approach from other similar movies from that era. Somehow, I do not see this movie as having been a big hit in theaters.
How To Make An Incredibly Average Sci-fi Movie... CHEAP! .......2004-09-30
Step 1- Make the alien invader invisible, so you only need to show doors opening and closing, and furniture moving around to indicate the extra-terrestrial presence. Step 2- Hire unknowns. Step 3- Stock footage! Stock footage! Stock footage! Actually, I happen to like PHANTOM FROM SPACE just fine. It's an average little movie with a decent storyline. Nothing spectacular, but enjoyable enough. I like the idea of an alien who is just trying to survive on our planet, without wanting to destroy us. He's stranded here with no way to communicate with our species! He kills in self-defense, only to be branded a murderer. He tries to make contact, but ends up scaring people instead. This is by no means a perfect movie. There are some lengthy patches of boredom and silliness throughout. I still recommend PFS to all science fiction fans...

Campy sci-fi in its purest form.......2006-01-08
Starman may well be the silliest superhero to ever save the Earth from destruction. Once you see his patented twirling exit, it's impossible to take this guy the least bit seriously - and that's before you even see him fight. Of course, he's a stud back home on the Emerald Planet, which is apparently populated by discarded robot models designed and made by some unnamed elementary school students. The sad part is that the Earth actually needs this doughy guy to pull our butts out of the fire - again. He had already saved the Earth from the would-be Atomic Rulers of the World. Now it's those unruly ruffians from the Sapphire Galaxy out to conquer the universe - starting with the Earth. These fascist aliens (the Superians) threaten the entire universe with their nuclear weapons, they are able to send giant space stations across the galaxy, they've infiltrated all aspects of Earth society with their network of spies, and they even have this super mind-wiper gizmo - yet, somehow, they don't know how to design a decent engine for a spaceship. Uh, okay. That's why they kidnap a Japanese scientist who is putting the finishing touches on his own shiny new spaceship - which is to be used for only peaceful purposes, of course. The plan is to get the geek scientist's plans for an engine, build lots of ships, and then attack the Earth. It would have worked, too, if it hadn't been for those durned kids - and Starman, of course.
So what makes Starman a superhero? Well, thanks to his alien technology (basically a fancy wristwatch called a globemeter), he has the ability to fly through space, detect radiation, speak every language on earth, and whatever other powers prove convenient as the movie goes along. He can also survive and breathe in space, but that doesn't really count since everyone in this movie can do the same thing. Oh yeah, his body is also apparently made of steel or something, as no one can hurt him with any kind of weapon. Mostly, though, Starman just likes to fight. You haven't seen pitifully choreographed fight scenes until you've seen Starman's seemingly endless battle against the aliens on their space station. He just kind of throws his arms up every now and again - well, suffice to say it's extremely silly-looking. And it goes on forever and a day, since he never really hurts anybody at all.
The Japanese have made some pretty campy sci-fi films over the years, but these Starman movies, which actually consist of footage taken from the old Super Giant television serials, take the proverbial cake. Any bad guy with an ounce of self-respect would die laughing at the sight of this paunchy, uncoordinated, spandex-clad do-gooder, yet his unique fighting "skills" and general peskiness strike fear in the hearts of the Superians. If you can't get enough old, extremely campy sci-fi films with truly embarrassing special effects, then you, my friend, must introduce yourself to Starman without delay. This guy makes the Prince of Space look like a stud.

Cheesy Sci Fi at it's best.......2002-07-23
The transfer on this DVD could be better, but for the price I couldn't complain. My favorite movie on this dvd is "Teenagers from Outer Space" The acting is horrible and the dialogue simply ridiculous. Cheesy sci fi fans will love this film for the corny special effects, the "Gargon" as they are called is a giant lobster and very poorly done, but it's a hoot, guaranteed to make you laugh.
"Phantom from Space" is actually a pretty good movie, the special effects are not bad for it's time, and the movie will hold your interest, it's an okay storyline. I really enjoyed it and if you are a die hard 50's sci fi fan this is a must have!!
"Killers from Space" has got to be among one of the lowest budget movies ever made. The space men are just great! Men dressed in a one piece hooded suit with ping pong balls cut in half for their eyes. Wow! scary! Plus you get to see them in the "special" green effect! I liked this movie because I like REALLY bad cheesy sci fi.
This dvd also includes 2 bonus features, a Popeye cartoon and a Ray Milland radio broadcast "Night Cry".
A Must-Have DVD From Space........2001-06-01
Phantom From Space is a decent movie for genre fans, sort of an "Invisible Man From Planet X" amalgamation, cheap but intriguing. Killers From Space is not very good at all, managing to be at once ridiculous and rather dull. Both of these are directed by W. Lee Wilder (Billy Wilder's less-successful brother).
On to Teenagers From Outer Space... Sometimes called one of the worst movies ever made, it has received that moniker unfairly. Sure, it is laughable in spots- an alien named Derek, a giant monster which is naught but a lobster shadow, truly wooden performances, and sometimes-hideous dialogue- but be honest as you watch this. You've seen much worse.
This movie is just plain entertaining. The pace is lightning-quick; that alone separates it from a myriad of similar 50's sci-fi efforts. It is better-directed than many films of its ilk, and the story has definite thought behind it, meager as its execution may be. The plot may seem redundant at times, but that was to me in keeping with the suspense of serials from the 30's and 40's. The FX are not that much worse than, say, the CGI on Babylon 5's early episodes, and the story is no more stupid than anything from the Bay/Bruckheimer team. And you know the movie means business when the first thing the aliens do upon landing is skeletonize a dog. Now that's evil!
It is a very earnest movie with a message that, while self-conscious and a tad overinflated, is unduly lampooned in these cynical times. There is camp (valiant misfires, entertaining and good-spirited) and there is dreck (exploitative crap by people who know they are making crap and wouldn't have it any other way). Give me camp any day.
Teenagers From Outer Space is not a good movie, but it is a very fun movie, one to watch again and again. I enjoyed it, and to say so does not make me feel ashamed ... much.
P.S. The transfer is pretty good; not as good as the Wade Williams collection from Image, but definitely worth the price.

Two W. Lee Wilder sci-fi "classics" from the early 1950s.......2005-12-19
W. Lee Wilder had a penchant for making enjoyably average yet largely forgettable science fiction films. In Phantom From Space (1953), Wilder introduces us to a much more agreeable alien than that found in his more familiar Killers From Space of the following year. Okay, so the phantom does kill a few people and cause some serious oil fires, but it's not all his fault. He's just not a people person, you see, what with being invisible and all. He's also not that bright, choosing to ditch his spacesuit and helmet rather than fall into the clutches of the humans on his tail. He needs something akin to a methane gas atmosphere in order to breathe, and a helmet-less jaunt on earth with its oxygen-based atmosphere threatens to cut short his visit in a most significant way.
The film starts out with an unidentified object hurtling from Alaska to the California coast, where the object seems to disappear. Mobile communications folks are sent out to determine the source of interference suddenly wreaking havoc in the area, and these guys keep bumping into cops investigating murders and other acts of destruction. Soon, these different forces team up with an army man and a scientist, and everyone eventually comes to the amazing conclusion that the source of all the trouble is actually a humanoid not of this world. The ending is not exactly a bright and chipper one, but it is just about the only plausible ending possible and, in its own way, it works pretty effectively.
I actually enjoyed Phantom From Space, despite a number of slow scenes in the first half of the film. The actors are reasonably good albeit colorless, and I was amused at the way the lead scientist seemed to become more and more German as the action progressed. There are certain limited parallels between this movie and Monster a Go-Go, and I feel compelled to state that the conclusion of Phantom From Space is far, far better than what you will find in its B-movie cousin. There's nothing here to make this film stand out, but it is a relatively painless and occasionally interesting cinematic diversion.
According to some, 1954's Killers From Space is so bad that it's good; some would even grant it B movie cult status. I take more of a middle ground because, to me, the movie isn't really that bad. Sure, it has some silly aspects to it, but it's a lot more enjoyable than many a 1950s science fiction thriller you can find out there in the wild. Admittedly, the prominence of Peter Graves also helps because I can't help but think of him as a legitimate actor despite a good bit of evidence to the contrary.
As for the plot, it all starts on a gorgeous day with a lot of folks coming together to watch the detonation of an atomic bomb - don't worry, they are all wearing goggles, so I'm sure they are in no danger whatsoever; as we all learned on MST3K, radiation can only hurt you if you touch it. Anyway, Dr. Douglas Martin (Peter Graves) is flying around above the explosion taking readings when his pilot spots a glowing object below and commences to take the plane into a vertical dive toward the earth. There is no sign of Martin's body in the wreckage, but no one could have survived the crash. Then, shortly thereafter, who should come wandering up to the gate of the local military base but Dr. Martin himself. He returns with no memory of what happened, but he does have a shiny new surgical scar covering the left upper side of his chest. He soon begins acting strangely, and ultimately he gets nabbed hiding some secret information about the next atomic test under a rock in the desert. In with the truth serum, and out comes a story of aliens with hard-boiled eggs for eyes breeding a zoo of genetically mutated super-sized critters. He insists that the future of the planet is in grave peril, but no one believes him. Thus, as is always the case, it's up to Peter Graves to save the world single-handedly (and, as luck would have it, the aliens were stupid enough to pretty much tell him how to destroy them).
Some individuals have posited that this film helped create a template for future alien abduction accounts. This idea is pure rubbish, in my opinion. Sure, the aliens have huge eyes that seem to haunt Martin, but no E.T. ever looked as stupid as these guys; Martin also wakes up on a table surrounded by aliens performing some kind of medical procedure on him, but the scenes in this movie are by and large pretty laughable. Besides the aliens, the other thing this movie is known for is its whole giant insect montage. When Martin tries to escape from the aliens, he winds up running around in their menagerie - in other words, he runs back and forth between some projection screens showing extreme close-ups of spiders, lizards, and other creepy-crawlies. This scene would have been fairly effective had the director shown any restraint, but these shots just continue for far too long. If you've seen Peter Graves in The Beginning of the End, you will feel quite at home here. In the final analysis, Killers From Space is obviously not a great movie, but I personally don't think it is quite bad enough to be considered a full-fledged "bad movie."

Terrible Quality DVD! Digitally Remastered???.......2005-12-16
I certainly understand why this DVD only cost me $2.50. This is the ultimate example of poor quality. The claim of "digitally remastered" is a farce. The source material for the master must have been a second generation copy of a low-budget, EP recorded video tape. The picture is fuzzy, grainy, and leaves ghosts trailing behind any character moving in a dark scene. Actually, I only watched "Phantom From Space." The quality was so poor that I won't bother to sit through "The Phantom From 10,000 Leagues" until I have nothing else to watch. This DVD was a waste of $2.50 (plus shipping).
