Customer Reviews:
good DVD collection.......2007-04-05
nice collection of live music and a few music videos , the collection is decent and sound is good. Blackmore and Morse are both fantastic. As for a live DVD , i happen to like the Sydney '99 better as it's a complete show.
Great DVD.......2007-03-18
I'm more partial to a single concert video rather than compilations because the changes in view, direction etc seem to take away the mood that you settle into with one venue like Austrailia '99 and Montrose. Plus the groups appearances change from time to time. "Theres Gillan with huge hair!" Then "Whoa - his hairs short now!" But I'm still glad to have this DVD in my Purple collection as it is simply an amazing collection of excellent music from concerts all over the world by one of my top two favorite groups. I never get tired of watching it even though the size of it is so big it takes two evenings to see it all.
WOW!.......2007-03-10
160 Minutes of the best of Deep Purple!
A bootleg collectors dream. Lot's of rare concert clips and some cool MTV style stuff.
Heavy stuff. Only got about half way through the disk lastnight. OVERLOADED with too much great stuff to process at one time.
If you like DP - get this one for sure.
FIRE, ICE & DYNAMITE.......2004-03-02
THIS DVD IS A MUST for any Purple's serious collector. Most of Purple's fans hate or at least ignore the Joe Lynn Turner line up era. Well, with this line up there were 2 excellent songs that remained almost unknown for a long time, the b-side "Slow Down Sister" wich is now available on the "Shades 1968-1998 BOX SET" and the movie soundtrack "Fire, Ice and Dynamite" from the same name's movie wich was unreleased until this DVD. Now you can hear that song on this DVD's end (on the clip wich the band and friends play soccer). After bought this DVD I could say: "Now I suppose to have ALL the Purple's official released songs !!"
Note that "Fire, Ice and Dynamite" doesn't appear on any other Purple's album or video. If you are a completist, BUY IT AS FAST AS YOU CAN !!!
Essential, but not the best picture or sound quality.......2003-04-06
The DVD captures aturbulent period in Purple's history, and it's great to see it all collected onto one video at last. But is it all? I have no idea! All the essential stuff from the first two Mark II reunion albums are there, and it is fantastic that they did put in the Turner videos (main reason why I got it- there is just so little documentation of the JLT line up, and it probably wasn't as bad as some thought, in retrospect). Lots of Morse footage and loved "Blind Man..." and the Smoke on the Water thing in Australia. But is there anything from The Battle Rages On that should have been on this disc? Adequate sound, picture quality dodgy at times, and Gillan is starting to show the strain. Essential for the fans only.

Customer Reviews:
Boring.......2007-04-16
I have to agree with some other reviewers' comments - the band are just going through the motions here, and then there is the shadow of Ian Gillan's munted voice - akin to a strangled chicken. He really can't reach those notes now, and the results when he tries are just painful. I had to turf this DVD into the wheelie bin.
This music was very exciting in the sixties, but bands such as Dream Theater and The Flower Kings are so much more exciting now, with regards to technique, composition and musicianship. Retire and save your dignity! Jon Lord saw the light....
Best Deep Purple DVD.......2007-04-05
I have a good collection of Deep Purple stuff. This concert I've watched at least 20 times. One of the best concert videos I own - and the number is around 100 right now. If you like DP at all, you will love Abandon. A ton of GOOD extra stuff too.
Deep Purple at their PEAK!
excellent , great show!.......2007-04-05
I think this is a great show. The band's playing is great and it definitly looks as if everybody's having fun. Steve Morse's playing is top-notch and the show is great. highly recommended!
Technically good, but..........2006-12-26
Technically speaking, the band is good here (of course, considering the amazibg talent of the musicians involved). But something is clearly missing, the sound is weak, the vibe is not strong, it's like they're playing by the numbers... Buy it only for collection purposes...
Beware!!! NOT the one shown on the pic!!!.......2006-10-19
I bought this DVD here and, to my surprise, I got a version of it with a different cover and much less bonus features. I asked for a change, but Amazon re-sent me the very same incorrect version. After that 2nd error they told me they couldn't send me the one displayed here. So, if you're buying this one, know you'll get the right concert, but a version which includes almost no bonus features (contrary to what the right version has), and a different cover.

Killer electric sea-ponies!.......2006-11-06
This film promises you giant killer eels. What it gives you is a carbon copy of THE ABYSS. The eels get about two minutes of screentime and look like snakes with horse heads. That, and they never do anything cool.
Bad acting and horrid effects ensue when an unknown heat source is detected below the Polar Ice Caps. Guess what the cause is: Super-intelligent electric eels with thoughts of world domination!
Take my advice and only rent this movie to laugh at it with a group of freinds.
Definition of Sucks.......2004-12-23
Deep shock is possibly the worst movie I've ever seen in my life. Hardly ever do you actually 'WANT' to turn a movie off. This one made the list. Not worth renting! If you are considering buying this release for somebody, you are a bad person. If you happen to see it on cable, don't watch it, go out and enjoy the day. Avoid this movie at all costs.
Don't bother watching it.......2004-05-26
First of, I completely agree with the other reviews for this movie.
My five year old insisted on renting this movie, because he was hoping to see those "scary sea creatures". He was totally disappointed, as was I with the movie quality. Most computer-generated special effects were too much like a video game clips, Movie plot was silly. The worst thing was the sound quality. Music was way too loud comparing to the dialogs' sound. Actors mumbled a lot, when I tried turning the "subtitles" on to understand what they were saying, I found out that there was no option for it. Basically I missed half of the conversations.
Clash of Civilizations.......2004-01-23
There is a trench near the North Pole and heat is pouring out of it. If left unchecked, this would result in massive global flooding. The problem is being investigated by the UN.
One scientist wants to understand what is going on while another just wants to blow up the trench mindlessly. guess which one the UN supports?
Well, the heat is actually artificial. It is being created by an ancient race of eel-like creatures that have awakened to spawn. They are intelligent. They think the world belongs to them and not humans. Can a deal be reached?
Well, at one point the UN, in its infinite wisdom, feels the way to end the heat is by blowing up 50+ 1-megaton nuclear missiles (can you say massive radiation and HEAT?).
There may be a chance of coexisting with the eel-creatures but there is no time to work out the solution now. But maybe if the creatures hibernate some more, there will be time later for proper communications.
Average effects and moderate acting are added to the odd plot. Anyone who has followed world events for the past year or two will really wonder at the writers who dreamed up the UN scenarios. Seems a small group of scientists are making very important decisions without the rest of the UN. At one point the group actually answers to the President (yeah, right).
Anyway, all of the silliness combines from all directions to make the film work (a single serious element would have made it terrible). Did you know it was an okay idea to fire high-powered rifles aboard a submarine?
DEEP DOO DOO.......2004-01-08
Since when did eels have heads like dragons? Since when did David Keith resort to such mindless dribble to jump start his career? This can be answered in this laughably enjoyable "thriller." The plot focuses on age old eels who have come out of a trench in order to lay their eggs. Of course, the government once again wants to mess with nature. Seems these eels have hastened the global warming threat and unless they are destroyed, the earth will enter a new ice age in about fifty years. In comes the noble scientist who wants to examine them first. Of course, this is where the movie relies on its feeble plot, which is so muddled and meandering, the viewer can only ask who cares? Keith is wasted and the rest of the cast, especially villain Mark Sheppard, need to return to acting class. The special effects are amateurish and the whole movie seems long, even though it's relatively short.
Rent it, but don't buy it; if you buy it, sell it on e-bay!

Customer Reviews:
Another great performance by DP!.......2007-06-06
Deep Purple - New, Live and Rare: A great DVD that covers DP from 1984 to 2003.
Deep Purple: Come Hell or High Water: I've had trouble with this one due to Blackmore acting up on stage.
Deep Purple Live in Australia 1999 - Total Abandon (2000): One of my favorite DVD concerts. Period!
Deep Purple - Live at Montreux 1996 (2006): Get Total Abandon 1st, if you want MORE DP after that, buy this one. Very good flim quality and another great DP concert.
Bombay Calling (2000): I was unsure about buying this one due to the (bootleg) film quality of this one. It don't matter - it's still a great concert & filmed in HD. Sure, the lighting is a little low at times, but hey, it's a live act. If you like Total Adandon & Montreux 1996 & still need your DP fix, get this one too. I've watched it a couple of times now & Bombay has grown on me. The live version of "Smoke on The Water" is simply stunning. I'm giving it 5 stars due to the fact that I plan on watching this one many times. This concert will be like an old friend to me.
DP does a lot of the same concert songs on their DVD's, but every live version sounds fresh & new to me. These guy's are one of the greatest rock groups ever in my book.
Now if DP would just release their 1996 Moscow concert........
Inferior quality.......2005-04-06
Blackmore's gone and Morse is in. What do you expect from the guys? A blast? No. Purple is back doing their "The Battle Rages on" tour setlist with a few new songs completing the set. The video started with the interview with the band and suddenly "Fireball" just started while Morse is talking. The sound is thin and very low in mix. You'll see Morse still adjusting with the band and he failed, most notably "Child in Time" and "Anya". The camera shots were poorly executed! Missing a lot of solos from Jon Lord. It's kind of pricy for this kind of DVD (Well this DVD was re-produced this year and the Korean concert was included and they beefed up the sound from a mere 2 ch stereo to 5.1 dolby surrounds). Get the Total Abandon DVD if you're looking for a great viewing pleasure.
It's A Beautiful Day.......2004-10-16
I usually don't write reviews on products I haven't seen, but I had to comment on the title of this DVD.
Bombay Calling is the title of an instrumental track on It's A Beautiful Day's first album. Deep Purple stole the opening and used in Child In Time (I think they even admit it). So it is interesting that this title was chosen for a Deep Purple DVD.
Deep Purple also stole It's A Beautiful Day's Don and Dewey and called it Wring That Neck. Deep Purple and It's A Beautiful Day played together at the Fillmore.
great band - total abandon live 1999 is better concert/dvd.......2003-07-06
The first concert with steve morse . deep purple deserve 5 stars ... but "this concert presentation contains rare analogue archival footage wich vary slightly in quality ..." recorded " dolby digital " with average sound quality and poor picture quality . steve morse start this concert badly with fireball and black knight but amazed us from the fifth track " the battle rages on" ," when blind man cries" , child in time" and became better and better ....
in 1999 live concert " total abandon" he is perfect.
ian gillan is still good vocalist with great voice but he lost his voice in this concert ( especially in " pictures of home").
total abandon is much better in all meanings but you will not find there " maybe im a leo" , " a battle rages on", purpendicular walz"," child in time" , " anya" so if you cant manage " total abandon" take and enjoy" bombay calling".
Transitional concert.......2001-08-12
A good show. It was transitional - this was before their Purpendicular album was finished, and after the Battle Rages On tour. Some of the songs from the Battle tour were still being played : Battle Rages On, Anya, Child in Time, When a Blind Man Cries, etc. There is one song from the upcoming album - 'Purpendicular Waltz', but in a semi-complete form. So, it has elements of their prior tour, and elements of their forthcoming one. They don't play 'Child' or 'Anya' much anymore, so to hear those with Steve Morse is pretty cool.

Deep Purple getting very murky...........2002-01-29
The Video Quality on this DVD is very poor....I believe it was not their intent to record this Program. The Sound is PCM Stereo...and the Technical Review here fails to mention it.
You might as well have bought an Audio CD !!!! Dont touch it if you value your money
The best rock concert ever held in India.......2001-07-11
The back cover of this DVD claims that this is said to be one of the best rock concerts ever held in India, and after watching it just once I wouldn't doubt it. Words can't describe just how much this performance rocks, and although there are a few bad camera angles, this DVD is still a must have for even the casual Purple fan. All the band members share the spotlight pretty evenly, and even though the setlist features a lot of the classics, the new stuff isn't shabby at all by comparison, so this is by no means a nostalgia band. Total Abandon 99 is better produced, but if it's performance you're after get this one first!
When A Blind Man Cries.......2001-05-01
This DVD has variating quality, due to the tape (recorded from the concert) used to create the DVD. This however is not a problem, because the important songs has very good quality (Child In Time). Most of the best songs are included. I especially like The song "When A Blind Man Cries", because Steve Morse really gets the guitar solo right. It will change your mood, that's how beautiful the solo is.
good movi.......2000-12-11
Deep Purple has always been a favourite band but when they re-grouped without Blackmore, I couldn't help wonder whether it would be the same. New kid Steve Morse was a pleasant surprise. While no-one can quite outshine Richie, Steve has an electrifying style of his own that has give new Deep Purple a different but altogether enjoyable sound.
