You won't be sorry........2007-04-23
This was more of a Twin Signal movie rather than a series since it was so short but it was still a great buy that I've never regretted. The animation is beautiful and somewhat notstalgic in that it does not rely heavily on computer graphics if at all. The story was a nice translation from it's manga counterpart and left me feeling satisfied despite the short length.
The only thing that slightly disappointed me was the promise of so much more to come from the opening credits. Even that wasn't so bad though because it inspired me to get online and look up more on the unshown characters (whose names are briefly listed in the opening credits).
The music is nice and does a good job of setting the tone of the story. I was particularily fond of the ending song which made me smile from the first few notes.
The characters were great despite their short showtime and made me want to watch again and again. Their individual quirks shown and made me fall in love with them each time I watched.
To sum it up. Buy this DVD and you won't be sorry!
Light Hearted.......2003-08-12
I really enjoyed this series, it is unfortuate more of it was not made. At least the DVD contains a complete story, the opening and closing give you a hint at where it could have gone. This one is ok for younger people too, no drugs, nudity, I don't believe there is any swearing either. I liked the extra on the DVD such as dressing Signal up as a girl, your have to admit he is almost too cute :) The plot: Signal, a combat robot programed to be the teenage older brother of the creaters grandson. He acts like a teenager too, complaining about being bored and has a crush on another robot. A pittiful rivel scientist wants to steal Signal's design and destroy Signal so he will be to only one in poscession of the technology. He plans to do this by using Signal's protype who has been retro fitted with lasers(that cause his eyesight to go in and out, sometimes he is very nearsighted) and cutting blades. I like this so well that I had to see if the Magna was availible, does not appear to in english :(
Worthwhile purchase.......2003-06-30
A good anime but way too short. Just watching it once makes you crave more to the point its painful, so be warned. Also the dub in itself isn't too bad except Elara's voice really irritated me and her name was pronounced as "Erala" which makes no sense whatsoever really......
a great anime, but maybe not a must see for all.......2001-07-05
Okay, personally I think this anime is absolutly great. It could easily be watched over and over and not get in the least bit boring. Not everyone will feel this way though, so I'll try to be a little more critical.
If you've read, or are interested and somewhat familiar with the manga (comic) series, this is definatly a must see. For one thing it is just great to see all of the characters animated, even if only in the intro. If you don't know anything about the series before seeing this, it's still good but may not be enjoyed quite as much. I'd recomend that you do a little research on the internet to get more familiar with the characters and plot line.
I also recomend this to any anime fan who likes comedy. If you're only into dramas you'll most likely hate it, but who knows? The plot line is good, but not overly complicated so it should keep your attention, but not leave you wondering what's going on. There is a lot of S.D. but not so much that it's like the animation of Dragon Half. Mostly it's just shown in facial expressions and not the full blown Super Deformed body.
As for the dubbing, I'll admit, it isn't really that bad. I'm really skeptical about any anime being dubbed, but aside from Elara having the voice of Misty from the dubbed Pokemon (I think; if not, it sound's a heck of a lot like her) it is done pretty well. My only major problem is that they changed Elara's name to Erala (what the heck is that about??). But unless you really hate subtitles, take my advise and watch it in Japanese. The english outtakes are hilarious however, so don't miss those. It's a hidden feature but shouldn't be too hard to find.
I was completely satisfied with this DVD, and if it looks good to you, give it a shot, I don't think you'll be disapointed. They even explain why Signal's hair is shown blue in some pictures and violet in others. I only wish that more than three episodes were animated.
And finally, because a review of this show isn't complete without it, Chibi Signal is just so darn cute! Umida, umida!
twin signal.......2001-06-26
not the greatest anime ever made. but, definatly one of the funniest! you even like the bad guys. don't expect a great plot, but if your after a fun/action adventure, where you root for everybody, than this is it. i recommend this for for the whole family!

The feature subtitled "The Empty Battlefield" is comprised of recut episodes of Gundam Seed (2002), with some bits of new animation--a practice that goes back to the original Gundam series (1979) and the first three features. This film includes material from the first 20 Seed episodes, or about one-third of the series.
In the year 71 of the Cosmic Era (rather than the "Gundam Saga" timeframe or the "Alternate Universe"), Kira Yamoto accidentally becomes a mecha pilot when he stumbles onto the top secret Strike Gundam during an attack on his home satellite-colony, Heliopolis. Although the war is technically between the Earth Alliance and ZAFT, it's really a conflict between the human "Naturals" and the genetically enhanced "Coordinators." The movie and the broadcast series offer the ingredients of a classic Gundam saga: a reluctant warrior, a masked enemy general, and an old friend who tests the hero's loyalty. Cutting the running time so substantially moves the action along a breakneck pace, but leaves little time for character development. Director Mitsuo Kukada uses CG to choreograph some very snazzy mecha battles, in space, within Heliopolis, and on Earth, often with a fine disregard for the laws of physics. (Rated 13 and older: violence, brief nudity) --Charles Solomon
Customer Reviews:
Gundam Seed:Empty Battlefield an option to the series.......2007-02-06
As a stand alone movie it was okay.
Unfortunately, it just seemed to be a compilation of several episodes from the series. Since I already own the first six discs of Gundam Seed, I was a little dissappointed. I was hoping to have a side story (like other anime series have done). However, this movie was executed well, and was an enjoyable watch. I had un-founded expectations, that's all. :)
this movie is worth it.......2006-06-18
I love seeing the action in this movie it is incredible. The animation is bright and colorful and even better then the series.
Empty Battlefield- Good, but not the best.......2005-10-09
I was led to watch this because I wanted more of Gundam seed and I hadn't really started watching destiny, I needed something to watch. This DVD has some pretty cool new songs, new scenes made just for the film and of course, plenty of action. Despite the fact that this DVD is pretty cool in terms of the new scenes inserted just for this purpose, it's not as good as the series was. However, it is a good movie to watch if you didn't understand the series or if you're waiting for destiny to come out. The new scenes are worth watching and the rest of the series is continued in the second movie.
There is nothing bad about this DVD,it has language settings, extras, new songs, scenes and more information on some of the more minor characters. I felt that in the begining of Gundam Seed that there weren't enough scenes with Athrun, Miguel and Rusty to make you feel Athrun's pain, but this DVD fills in those few gaps and answers most of the questions you may have form the series. Watch this DVD and see if you want to watch the series, or if you've already seen it, watch and see the new scenes, this DVD has some pretty cool scenes and explains half of the series in about an hour.
Even though it does add some deatail to the series that wasn't there before, it still doesn't have enough new scenes and cool features to get five stars. It lacks some of the details some Gundam Seed fans may have been looking for. This DvD is good but it doesn't go the mile or have enough unique qualities to receive five stars. I was slightly disapointed when I saw it.
Try this DVD to see for yourself if you like it, or to see if you want to watch the series.
GOOD GUNDAM.......2005-10-03
While I enjoyed this movie very much, I felt the second Gundam Seed movie was better. This movie is good and worth owning, and it does explain alot. There are scenes which need to be seen, as well as character development. But beware: Fllay is a mental case, not to mention a whiney seductress. I don't recommend this movie for kids under the age of 13, since there are some sexual situations.
Great Condition.......2005-09-17
This order got to me in a timely fashion and was in great condition.

Japan faces the expensive problems of caring for an aging population. As a solution, Mr. Terada, an official in a mysterious government ministry, unveils the Z-001, a high-tech bed that cares for an invalid's every need. His chosen guinea pig of a patient is Mr. Takazawa, an aged man in the care of Haruko, a pretty young nurse. Haruko realizes that the machine can't attend to Mr. Takazawa's emotional needs and tries to rescue him. When Terada foils her efforts, she turns to a group of elderly patients--who turn out to be ace hackers. The complications pile up when an unscrupulous member of Terada's staff reveals that the Z-001 is actually a prototype battle robot. But once Haruko's aged hackers gain control of it, the Z-001 takes on the personality of Mr. Takazawa's late wife. It sets out to realize his dream of spending a day at the beach at Kamakura, wreaking havoc wherever it goes.
Although it's filled with robot battles, sexual jokes, and sinister-sounding acronyms, Roujin Z, written and designed by Katsuhiro Ôtomo, the director of Akira, has a humane warmth that sets it apart from run-of-the-mill anime features. Not rated, but minor nudity and sexual jokes are unsuitable for small children. --Charles Solomon
Customer Reviews:
Roujin zzzzzzzzzzzzz.......2007-01-14
A prototype mechanized bed designed to take care of the elderly morphs into a powerful robot and goes on a rampage in order to take its occupant on one more trip to the beach. There's a bit of social commentary about Japan's rapidly aging society in the premise; however, a character's comment that it's not right to put the aged in mechanical beds because that just hides the problem neatly sums up everything "Roujin Z" has to say on the subject. The rest of the film is rampaging robots, lowbrow comedy, and widespread destruction, none of it very interesting either visually or dramatically.
Despite the undeniable talent and experience of Japan's animation industry, I continue to be surprised and annoyed that the same big-eyed, narrow-jawed character design is so prevalent. It seems to be a convention of the genre that fans just accept, but it made me feel that I had already seen "Roujin Z" as soon as it began.
Anime Morality.......2006-01-10
Roujin Z was one of the first anime I ever saw, and if I'm right it's also one of the first brought over to American shores and given the full treatment. It's funny watching this movie ten years later, because Americanized anime back then wasn't treated the same as anime today. Instead of letting the Japanese culture shine through, they force the American way into the scenes. One primary example is where they displace Japanese government and police agencies for our own, that being the Pentagon and FBI. It's a history lesson in anime as well as a fun anime movie from the past era of re-versioned anime.
The story is about an old man who's gotten to the point where he can no longer care fore himself without help, and a young nurse named Haruko has taken it upon herself to care for this man. But, without her knowledge, a family member of the old man has volunteered him to be the guinea pig in the experimentation of a cutting edge bed, made for caring for the old. But the bed is designed too well, and grows a mind of its own, taking on the personality of the old man's late wife. Thus, the bed changes into a giant robot with all intentions of getting the old man to the beach. In its path are government officials and military versions of the bed, but the bed itself has its own help in a group of old hackers and young nurses, as well as Haruko.
The story takes on an Akira-like moment when the machines start to mutate, taking in anything and everything it touches, but it doesn't exactly take away from the anime, even though it's an obvious copy of the cult classic. The gold in this anime is the message it delivers, and that message is how we treat those of a later generation, or the old, to be blunt. And it proves that age is no barrier, nor is it a weakness, but a state of mind.
For anyone seeking to learn what Americanized anime was like ten years ago, or if you're a collector, check this out. Roujin Z is a solid anime very similar to Akira in design, but not in mood; this anime in no way takes itself seriously. It's funny at times, and touching at other times, but never dark or overly violent.
Good but not as good as I like it a few years ago.......2005-09-07
An anime story about a nurse and his 70 year old patient. I liked this movie but for me it has lost some of it's freshness over the years. Still it's worth seeing to see Haruko Mishashi and Mr. Takazawa and also the bad guys Terada and Hasegawa.
rating 13 up: minor nudity and sexual jokes
Entertaining, light early 90's chase anime.......2005-07-16
Friday, July 15, 2005 / 4 of 5 / Entertaining, light early 90's chase anime
While at once amusing and alarming prescience, this early 90's anime tells a tale of the aging of Japan and the issues the elderly will impose upon the care giving industry. Not the typical anime subject matter, but things kick into gear as a veiled group introduces a super-mecha bed that will tend to the needs of the elderly, bathing, feeding, taking care of their waste, etc. all controlled via a super computer and nuclear furnace. The bed has some hidden capabilities however, and the first test case, an old man, is taken along for a wild ride. The man's human nurse and her friends give chase along with the bed's company when it takes on the personality of the man's deceased wife. What ensues is a chase as the bed tries to take the man to the beach. Must be seen to be believed. Funny and breezy, it's highly recommended.
Funny, gross, and impressive!.......2004-03-27
This movie is silly, disgusting and satirical. There is a lot here that resembles Akira: detailed designs, solid direction, changing alliances, activist young people, and over-the-top transformations.

Excellent low-budget drama.......2005-09-05
This is sci-fi, but don't expect a high tech thriller -- it's a well-written, well-acted, well-directed drama. The pace is on the slow side, but if you're in a laid-back mood, it's a nice little movie to kill an hour and a half with.
This Is A Great Movie.......2004-05-18
I wrote a review for the V.H.S. edition of this film, a few years ago, but it is gone now, because it is no longer available on V.H.S., and Amazon has completely removed it from their database. I saw this movie when it came out 21 years ago (1983). I've always liked it a lot. The scientist that created the android, gets very attached to it, throughout this movie, because he and his wife were never able to have children of their own, so the human looking android, is like a "Son" figure for the scientist. I like that aspect of this film. The ending is sad, but Michael (the android), did the right thing. The government would have used him for the wrong reasons. Watch this movie, and I think that you will like it.

As agents hunt down Pinocchio, the sex android begins to unravel in what can only be said is a hallucinogenic thrill ride that has to be seen to be believed. Shozin Fukui's masterful direction gives the viewer a totally unique experience along the lines of, "Tetsuo the Iron Man". This underground classic packed the theaters in Japan and stood out among so many other films that it was hailed as a masterpiece of innovation in Japan's film industry.

964 PU.......2007-05-25
10 minutes of poor writing stretched to 97 minutes by bad acting with a 90 minute sound track of grunting, screaming, and gagging. Like getting on a bad ride after a bad meal. When it finally stops you still don't feel well and you regret wasting your time and money. I don't know what drug cyberpunks are on to enjoy this but thank you, I'll pass.
Welcome to the strange world of Japanese cyber punk cinema!.......2006-10-23
Like Tetsuo: The Iron Man this film takes you into a really bizarre, neurotic, and insane world where all of the normal conventions of cinema have been thrown out. In other words, you are either going to love this film or you are going to completely hate it. Personally, I am stuck somewhere in between those two extremes. This is by no means a perfect movie, but I really enjoyed it for what it was... or rather whatever you may wish to call it. The imagery was very abstract and, even though it felt like a Tetsuo rip off at times, there were still some pretty creative ideas within this film. I also liked how the entire film was shot in color instead of black and white. I think that too many of these types of movies rely too heavily on the stark atmosphere of black and white instead of exploring the vivid colors and imagery that can be projected in color. I especially liked seeing the actors freaking out in public. That was quite an amusing site to behold. How modest the Japanese are! I wonder how Americans would react to that. They stared at times, but for the most part they kept to their own individual business. I wonder what other bizarre events they ignore. Overall, if you are expecting a conventional movie with a storyline and a cast of well developed and likable characters, then look elsewhere. If you want to see an LSD trip of a movie, then this is going to be right up your alley, because the images on screen are just very bizarre and abstract. I guess that you could read into this film in any way that you choose. Ultimately, as a piece of art it is left open to interpretation. However, you have to look at the images in order to understand what this film is trying to say. So, with that in mind, this is a film that is told through images, not dialogue.
scorn is better than porn.......2006-08-26
this was a very good film if you are looking for something completely awkward. lots of nonsense that makes it so unique however still the similarities to this and tetsuo the ironman are obvious. only thing i didnt like was that it seemed to drag on a bit much like tetsuo but i love how these japanese actors pull off the delusional acts. not enough lesbian action if you ask me. i like the extra short as well
Unhinged cyberpunk from hell!!!.......2006-01-14
Yowza!!! This is an amazing flick from Shozin Fukui (Rubber's Lover). This baby is filled to the brim with kinetic energy that'll blow the unsuspecting viewer away.
Previously residing in the lonely world of bootleg video, Unearthed Films released this fantastic edition on DVD. The image quality is something magnificant to behold. For a film shot on 16mm, the restoration is quite breathtaking. I couldn't believe how amazing it looked.
For me, this film isn't really about the story, it's about the experience of watching it, and it's one hell of a ride. Fukui has an impressive eye (I wish he crank out a few more films) and even though he was working within the limited aspect ratio of 1:33:1, he still manages to capture some striking compositions. His creative use of cinematography creates a very chaotic and unstable world that can become unhinged (which it usually does) at any given moment. His use of sound and performaces from fearless actors will further test of audiences' boundaries of sanity.
I saw this before I saw Tetsuo: The Iron Man, which many people accuse this film of ripping off. No way! This baby is a completely different animal. In many ways, I think Pinocchio 964 emerges as a better film. At the very least, it lives within its own creative world and I'm very happy that I can finally view it as it was meant to be seen!
Check it out!
The Second Coming..........2005-12-31
I going to speak to a specific audience of reader right now, and you will know who you are. You saw Tetsuo: The Iron Man years ago, and it burnt itself ito the circuitry of your brain. You watched it many times, and showed it to friends; but no matter where you looked, or what you watched, you never got the same high as you did that from watching Tetsuo. Perhaps you watched Tetsuo 2, and were disapointed; perhaps you watched Tokyo Fist, and it just wasn't the same. You watched other films by other Japanese directors, but nothing could rise to the delerious cyberpunk heights of Tetsuo...
Until now...
The Second coming has arrived...mmmm, apparently in 1992!
If Tetsuo was your cup of slime and blood, this will get you off hard. And let me tell you, this is not just some Tetsuo wanna be, a Tetsuo clone. This is a film with a world all of it own. It has a totally different aesthetic, totally different textures, totally different themes and subthemes. This is a wild, hardcore, punk rock trip into the dark side, and I loved it.
The actors go places that blew me away. Like they jacked straight into the Id, and their performances show a level of commitment that no American actors would ever dare take themselves. It seems like they are all tripping hard on LSD or some types of psychodelics. The director is incredibly self confidant, and wants to "show you" his world, not explain it will dialogue. He has his roots in some strange punk, noise rock underground scene, and he incorporates this sensibility into the film.
The use of sound in the film is truly unique, and help build layers of (un)reality. The film takes some serious twists and turns that will satisfy the philosophical side of your nature. One of the coolest part for me, was that most of the film seems to have been film (guerilla style) in public!, without permission, mostly in stores and subways. It really tickles me to wonder what people must have been thinking to have seen these freaks going nutz while they were on the way to work. If you watch, you can see some pretty shocked looks on their faces, but, weirdly enough, most people just keep walking.
This movie is a new personal favorite of mine. It lean, mean, punkrocking subversive machine- but strangely sweet.
Oh, and did I mention that this DVD has a short film on it (a rather long short film) called Caterpillar by the same director, which also is wild and weird and waiting to rock your world.
I also have found out that the director shot a prequel to this film a number of years later, and it is supposed to be every more offensive and violently psychotic! It is called Rubber's Lover and it also available on DVD. I will review that one after I have bought and watched it.
I'm speaking to you, and you know who you are. Get this, see this...I'll see you on the other side.

Description
An elderly invalid is volunteered for a bizarre experiment. The Z-001 is a machine that take care of all human needs when linked with the brain waves of the subject. But due to a secret military prototype of the Z-001, the machine has turned into an unstoppable robot.
