Was author Whitley Strieber telling the truth about extraterrestrial visitations in his bestselling book, Communion? Perhaps no one can really prove or disprove it, making the enigma of Strieber himself more interesting than his allegations. That's precisely the angle taken by this film adaptation, in which Christopher Walken's richly eccentric performance becomes a fascinating portrait of something more important than rumors of alien abduction--that is, human resistance and surrender to transformation. The script does an end run around the deductive process and research Strieber employed in his book to substantiate his claims. Instead, the story concentrates on the impact of those experiences on Strieber's own psyche: the disbelief, the repressed memories, the mounting helplessness and futility as the years go by.

Walken makes it all terribly compelling, from his childlike compliance to the diminutive aliens who turn up in his home at night to an unexpected story climax in which Strieber demystifies the little buggers on his own surprisingly comic terms. The supporting cast is terrific, including Lindsay Crouse as Strieber's concerned wife, Frances Sternhagen as a doctor, and Joel Carlson as Strieber's son. This is not an offering that panders to today's alleged abductees, but rather a study of a sole survivor who finds his peace on his own terms. --Tom Keogh

Description

Based on the best-selling novel by Whitley Strieber, "Communion" features what is considered by many to be Christopher Walken's finest performance to date. "Communion" depicts the personal and professional crises a writer experiences after a series of encounters with non-human beings. This film is arguably the most intelligent film about the alien abduction/visitor phenomenon. Unlike countless made-for-TV films, where the emphasis is on the sensationalistic, "shocking" aspects of the subject, "Communion" focuses on the psychological and emotional harm the experience does. We see Strieber (Walken) describe his experiences to his medical doctor, and then to a psychiatrist. Once his own mental health has been established, then (and only then) does he begin to consider the possibility that the creatures he has seen are actually real. Did Streiber actually experience these abductions. You be the judge.

4 out of 5 stars HEY,CHRISTOPHER WALKEN'S IN IT..........2007-01-31

Based on the book of the same name, stars Christopher Walken
portraying the author, and his ordeals recalling his encounters
with Beings from another universe. As always this story is very
controversial,if viewed by those who Don't see 'em, Don't Beleive
'em. Still worth adding to the collection (if only for Chris!).

2 out of 5 stars I'm waiting for a sequel called "Confirmation".......2006-12-11

Ok alien abduction flick. I always like Chris Walken no matter what movie he's in. Maybe if this was made more recently we would have gotten more specifics. You're not sure if something happened or not, but maybe that's what abduction is. Why are the aliens always so ugly, aren't there any planets with good looking aliens? And their not very sanitary, that spaceship looked dirty and so did the probe thing that came out of the wall, do they clean their instruments before they shove them in us? They don't look very healthy, or very clean. Oh well, Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Not Very Coherent, But Very Unsettling.......2006-09-08

Is Strieber insane. Or is he making this crazy account up to sell books and inspire films? I'll have to say yes to the latter. However, don't let that dissuade you from a creepy film like Communion. Although, the plot is VERY disjointed there are very distubing scenes. Have you ever felt like an alien creature was creeping into your bedroom as you slept? Well, you will after seeing a scene that depicts exactly that. Memorably disturbing scenes of this nature give this otherwise uninteresting film a decent shelf life.

3 out of 5 stars Not all that convincing.......2006-05-30

Even though I read 30-odd pages of Communion before coming to the conclusion that it was just a little to far-fetched, I thought I'd see what the movie had to offer. Well, to be quite honest, it did nothing to convince me that my initial conclusion from the book is unjustified. Are we seriously supposed to believe that aliens who apparently have the ability to visit our planet from great distances have such impracticle body structures, and that they've come all this way simply to[...] probe Earthlings? I'm by no means a sceptic when it comes to this topic, and am willing to give anyone the benefit of the doubt so long as their story isn't completely absurd--which is the case with Communion.

The DVD contains a very short clip of the surgical removal of a supposed alien implant from some guy's arm. This may sound sensational, but it most certainly is not. Not surprsingly, we are not allowed a close-in look at this "alien implant" and, no less surprising, the clip ends with a statement to the effect that the nature of the "device" has yet to be determined. And I'm sure that it has since been "mysteriously" lost so we'll never know what it was. Isn't that just always the case?

4 out of 5 stars Altogether an enjoyable movie.......2006-04-24

All in all, I have to say that I enjoy this movie very much. I first saw it when I was very young (right after it came out) and it got to me just as much then as it does now.

I will admit however that to a person who isn't into the UFO phenomena it might not make a lot of sense. Being very big into the paranormal myself (practically my whole life), I will say that it even took me a while to fully understand what was going on in this movie. Ultimately however at the end there isn't much that can or can't be proven as no one can really claim to know the full truth (at least that I know of :)).

Altogether I give this a 4 out of 5 stars. If you're into the UFO phenomenon, you'll probably enjoy it. If you're not, it's still a fun movie to sit down to on a friday night with some popcorn and have a few thrills.

        Description

This DVD features two half-hour documentaries and ten previews.

        AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands
The history of Amsterdam as an ancient place of pilgrimage dates to the Middle Ages. In the 13th or 14th centuries, Amsterdam was a small settlement at the mouth of the river Amstel. It was also called Miracle City, and it owes that name to the Miracle of the Holy Sacrament. The story dates from March 13th, 1345, when a dying man was given the Sacrament of the Sick in his house on Kalverstraat. A chapel was built on the site. Medieval Amsterdam grew into an important place of pilgrimage. And every year on the 3rd Saturday in March, thousands of pilgrims from all over Holland take part in the procession. Most arrive by bus or train. But in many of the smaller towns surrounding Amsterdam the entire journey is made on foot, some pilgrims walking as many as forty miles to reach Amsterdam.

        Fatima, Portugal
The history of Fatima can be traced to the beginning of the 20th Century. Three children witnessed the sudden appearance of the Holy Virgin beneath an oak tree, describing her as a "lady of white light." Mary instructed the children to recite the rosary every day. She appeared to them five times again that summer, her last appearance marked by a miracle, the "solar phenomenon" of Fatima. Several years later, two of the three children died. Lucia, ten years old at the time of the appearance, joined the Carmelite order of nuns, and began to proclaim the message she had received from the Holy Virgin to the world. Today, Fatima attracts over a million and a half pilgrims yearly. The trek to Fatima is usually done in exchange for a favor received. Pilgrims often make a promesa, a personal vow to do penance as a sign of their gratitude to the Virgin. For many, this means covering the last 500 yards on the marble floor to the Chapel of the Apparitions on their knees.

--Tom Keogh
