A hallmark of the science fiction genre as well as a wry commentary on the political climate of the 1950s, The Day the Earth Stood Still is a sci-fi movie less concerned with special effects than with a social parable. A spacecraft lands in Washington, D.C., carrying a humanoid messenger from another world (Michael Rennie) imparting a warning to the people of Earth to cease their violent behavior. But panic ensues as the messenger lands and is shot by a nervous soldier. His large robot companion destroys the Capitol as the messenger escapes the confines of the hospital. He moves in with a family as a boarder and blends into society to observe the full range of the human experience. Director Robert Wise (West Side Story) not only provides one of the most recognizable icons of the science fiction world in his depiction of the massive robot loyal to his master, but he avoids the obvious camp elements of the story to create a quiet and observant story highlighting both the good and the bad in human nature. --Robert Lane

Description

The Day The Earth Stood Still depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C. hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world's leaders so he can tell them more specifically what he has come to warn them about. Losing patience, Klaatu slips into the human world, adapting a false identity and living at a boarding house where he meets a smart woman with a conscience and her inquisitive son. Both mother and son soon find themselves embroiled in the complex mystery of Klaatu, his message and the government's witch hunt for the alien.

This movie earned a Golden Globe and it's message still holds true today.

4 out of 5 stars Campy Drama / Sci-Fi Classic.......2007-05-12

Who knew that actress Patricia Neal and good old Francis Bavier (Aunt Bea from Mayberry fame) would ever appear together, along with Michael Rennie, in this sci-fi-cult screamer of a black-and-white classic, and that we will forever remember the line: "Gort! Klaatu Barada nikto!" This item is worth having just as a peerless piece of 50's memorabilia! Get it, watch it... and Wikipedia it for little known factoids!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best sci-fi movies of the 50's.......2007-04-24

If ever a film could capture the very essence of syrupy conception while making us love it with utter devotion, this is it. The story is perfectly linear in construction, the characters neat and tidy. The story unfolds before you like a clean, speckled linoleum walkway. Just put on your high-tops and stroll along, glass of milk in one hand, cookies in the other. This is the film that reminds the peacenik in us that those higher powers, you know - the guardians of intergalactic peace we just know are out there, are watching, waiting for that single telltale act of malicious intent from homo sapiens that will bring down every last heat ray of righteous fury the outer space cops can muster and "leave our world a burned out cinder."

You'll love the fact that huge diamonds are the currency on the space cops' planet, and that he carries a few million dollars worth in the pockets of his borrowed woolen suit for change. You'll especially love the fact that just three little words, constructed of strangely Germanic phonemes, when spoken to a ten-foot tall robot awakened with a boy scout's flashlight, can belay its built-in command to destroy our world. Watch in bug-eyed awe as Michael Rennie's hands play over those big `ol light bulbs that double as his flying saucer's controls, waving this way and that, as he launches the most complex shipboard functions. Gasp agog as you discover that the cop's ship is made of material so tough that it's un-scratchable, un-filable and un-blowtorchable. Watch the space cop scribble the answer to a monstrously long mathematical equation on Albert Einstein's doppelganger's chalkboard to get the pipe-smoking professor's attention. It's pure poetry I tell you.

5 out of 5 stars The Day the Earth Stood Still.......2007-04-04

This is the original classic movie that everyone should see. The props and the technology of film making has advanced but the differences in our world are the same. Man only does one thing well. He finds improved ways of killing each other. In this movie, though many years old, man is faced with a dilemma. Live in harmony or be eliminated by higher intelligence. Let's face it folks, no intelligent life form would want to have anything to do with a race of people that only excell at murdering each other and their own environment! It is a great movie.

5 out of 5 stars The Earth Stood Still This Movie Moves On.......2007-03-19

After so many years this movie couldn't have been written better today than it was back then. A great theme ahead of it's time with a great cast. I wish they could still make movies today like they did back then. Unfortunately most of these older movies have lost their moral meaning throughout the 60's, 70's, 80's, and whatever was the 90's. It just goes to show that just because something is new doesn't make it better. Watch this movie and you will know what I mean.

The controversial, Reagan-era invasion of Grenada by U.S. troops is, oddly enough, at the center of this initially interesting story of a seasoned Marine sergeant (Clint Eastwood) routinely insulted by younger officers for being a symbol of the war that America "lost" in Vietnam. Looking for both a victory and a little redemption, Eastwood's character trains a squadron of scrappy pups and turns them into fighting grunts, just in time to follow White House orders and take the little island. Marsha Mason plays Eastwood's love interest, and Mario Van Peebles is funny as an undisciplined con artist who joins Clint's men and finally catches the spirit after getting his butt kicked a few times. --Tom Keogh

Description

After serving in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Gunnery Sergeant Tom Highway finds himself with a collection of medals and no war to fight. Training a new group of Marines that are more green than mean, Highway complicates matters by attempting to reconcile with his former wife, Aggie. Rekindling the spark in his failed marriage won't be easy with a crisis brewing in Grenada and his pathetic platoon far from ready.

5 out of 5 stars Clint Eastwood & the old breed of Marines.......2007-05-13

This is a wonderful movie...showing the difference between the "old breed" and "new breed" of marines. I have seen this MANY times. I know some of the quotes by heart, and started using one of them from time to time.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2007-01-15

I bought this for my brother because he wanted it. We ended up watching it and I was really pulled into this movie. This is not your typical war movie, but more about how Clint transforms a bunch of poor soldiers into fighting men. A fine movie!

3 out of 5 stars It got me to join.......2006-11-12

"Heartbreak ridge," is one of those movies that I think turned into an unintentional recruiting movie. First off, for those true devil dogs, like me, you all recognize Eastwood's character of GySgt Highway as the epitomy of what Chesty Puller described as a Marine. How many marines have encountered Gunnys, Sergeant Majors, and First Sergeants that held the same attitude and mystique that Gunny Highway had? I mean, first off, a combat veterean who tells a POG (Marines will know that term) officer to go "F" himself, is the kind of NCO we wanted to follow. I know that when I first watched this movie, it made me want to join (which I did) and be just like Gunny Highway (which I didn't). For the people who see this movie and say it portrays the Corps in a negative light, go live with a Marine infantry unit, and you'll see how realistic it is. It may not be the best Marine Corps story (I save that for Jarhead), but its one of the best out there, better than Full Metal Jacket. I reccomend that all 0311 Marines, and really, any Marine, should add this to their "Must- Own" collection.

1 out of 5 stars Worst movie Eastwood ever made.......2006-09-17

This movie is so bad that even the Army, which supported it at first, withdrew there support. Eastwood's character started his career in the US Army during the Korean War where he fought in a battle later called "Heartbreak Ridge". The story line was so inept and the telling of the tale so bad that the Army withdrew its support in the production. The film company then had to rewrite to scipt so that Eastwood's character changes services and enlist in the USMC after the Korean War and fights in the Vietnam War.

So all of you "Leathernecks" looking for a "pride of the Corps" tale should pass, it isn't going to happen in this story. In fact, the movie takes pains to present the USMC in a very negative light. That the Corps continued to support this production reflects just how desperate it was for any mention from Hollywood.

The script is pathetic, the production weak, and the conclusion unsupportable. Send Hollywood a message and do not support this movie.

5 out of 5 stars "Shut your mouth, Hippie!".......2006-09-05

An excellent movie, Heartbreak Ridge, brings to the screen the story of a down-on-his-luck sergeant in the U.S. Marines who is given another chance/shot at what he loves the most: his job, his woman, and his men.
Clint Eastwood and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, it allows for a highly entertaining movie that can be watched over and over again!
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the humor, are all wonderful!
In short, Heartbreak Ridge is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection (if you haven't done so already)!

Director John Carpenter and special makeup effects master Rob Bottin teamed up for this 1982 remake of the 1951 science fiction classic The Thing from Another World, and the result is a mixed blessing. It's got moments of highly effective terror and spine-tingling suspense, but it's mostly a showcase for some of the goriest and most horrifically grotesque makeup effects ever created for a movie. With such highlights as a dog that splits open and blossoms into something indescribably gruesome, this is the kind of movie for die-hard horror fans and anyone who slows down to stare at fatal traffic accidents. On those terms, however, it's hard not to be impressed by the movie's wild and wacky freak show. It all begins when scientists at an arctic research station discover an alien spacecraft under the thick ice, and thaw out the alien body found aboard. What they don't know is that the alien can assume any human form, and before long the scientists can't tell who's real and who's a deadly alien threat. Kurt Russell leads the battle against the terrifying intruder, and the supporting cast includes Richard Masur, Richard Dysart, Donald Moffat, and Wilford Brimley. They're all playing standard characters who are neglected by the mechanistic screenplay (based on the classic sci-fi story "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell), but Carpenter's emphasis is clearly on the gross-out effects and escalating tension. If you've got the stomach for it (and let's face it, there's a big audience for eerie gore), this is a thrill ride you won't want to miss. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars I had to wait 24 years to see this movie.......2007-06-25

When I had 5 years old I saw some trailers in 1982 when some guy lose his head and the head run. I can't believe what hapenned and i had about 2 days that I can't sleep well.

I never knew the name of that movie, until talking with an older friend in 2005 he told the name... The Thing. Oh my god !!! I ran to buy this movie. I eliminated all the fears from all this years.

This is a great movie, a great history, Kurt Russel rocks.

Thanks Mr. Carpenter to accept this remake of "The thing from another world" and thanks to give the principal role to Kurt Russel.

U.S. Outpost #31, Antarctica, 1982--Twelve men are commissioned to gather physical and natural science data. It is the dead of winter. With six months of darkness ahead of them, they uncover the find of the century. Of a thousand centuries.

If only they could put it back.

5 out of 5 stars Paranoia Given Flesh.......2007-06-07

It still shocks me that this movie bombed at the box office and very nearly ended John Carpenter's career. The top notch effects, excellent direction and acting, as well as a novel storyline make this a suspense film that eats into your very bones. Kurt Russell and the rest of the cast give soul to the characters who struggle to survive against a foe who threatens to divide and conquer them one by one. The thought behind the thing was mind blowing: an amorphous alien who camouflages itself in order to enter into a group and destroy them from within. If you haven't seen this then you must. You can't be a horror buff without it.

1 out of 5 stars Where's Adrienne Barbeau.......2007-06-02

Where is Adrienne Barbeau in this movie starring Kurt Russell? I guess the review for this would be better if you could get the actors & actresses right

5 out of 5 stars His best movie after Halloween.......2007-05-23

I hope to all that is great that they do NOT make a remake of this movie. You can argue that this was remake but if you read the original story, you will find that this is a closer adaptation of the book than the original movie.

4 out of 5 stars Paranoid at the Pole.......2007-05-23

Making a tautly suspenseful film requires the ingredients of a superbly crafted work such as this science fiction classic. The Thing is not merely a sequence of gore-splashed killings that leaves one wondering who will be the last man standing. Suspense builds, and paranoia grows to fever pitch in this action packed thriller.

Atmospheric conditions of Anarctica and the creepy dark corners in this ice camp provide the canvas for a master to go to work on the nerves. But far worse is in store for the camp dwellers who find themselves out of radio contact with the rest of the world and wondering how they will warn of their horrible discovery. As the story unravels, everyone learns survival has become a game of every man for himself. No one can be trusted in this nightmare at the bottom of the world.

The film opens mysteriously enough. The quiet of the camp is shattered by gunfire from an approaching helicopter. Someone is shooting at what appears to be a fleeing dog. In an unforgiving part of the planet where the pressures are extreme, conclusions are quickly drawn that the helicopter occupants surely have lost their minds. But, the shooter is dropped and the pilot killed in a fiery explosion before questions can get under way. An investigation is promptly mounted and the camp dwellers soon learn from a visit to the neighboring camp that the men in the helicopter were overcome not by insanity but a creature found buried in the ice. But is it soon enough?

Kurt Russell plays the stereotype, no-nonse, machismo hero who ends up leading a struggle to stop "the thing." The cast is populated by a garden variety oddball or two, a few eggheads and the every-man faces that have become customary fare for an alien-eats menu. No character development here. No time for it in this well-paced flick.

The technology is impressive enough that the film's effects hold up even today. This film is gorey by anyone's measure. So, keep a good grip on your popcorn and soda - you're going for a ride.

A mysterious, pilotless plane carries scientist Rex Reason to a colony of America's best and brightest minds. They've been kidnapped by a dying alien race, the Metalunians, to repair their defense shield before their enemies destroy their world completely, toiling under their spying eyes and futuristic security cameras (two-way TVs that dominate every room). Jeff Morrow, under a raised forehead, bronze tan, and snow-white hair, philosophizes as Exeter, the thoughtful Metalunian torn between his duty and his morals as he forces the plucky humans to labor in his race's defense. The moody mystery of the first half turns to pure pulp adventure when the humans are transported across the galaxy to the battle-scarred world of Metaluna, under the threatening watch of a monstrous bug-eyed monster with a giant brain for a head and massive claws for hands. There's a genuine sense of wonder to Joseph Newman's intergalactic adventure, one of the most ambitious science fiction films of the 1950s. The story is simple space opera, but the futuristic designs of glass and metal, the marvelous alien makeup, and grandstanding special effects invest the film with a Technicolor splendor. Faith Domergue co-stars as a nuclear physicist and Gilligan's Island's Russell Johnson makes his first professorial appearance as a scientist. Science fiction auteur Jack Arnold was an unbilled codirector. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars 50 years it stands just as strong now as it did in 1957.......2007-04-17

This is an outstanding film for any Star Trek buff or anyone who loves the classic Sci-Fi. Not campy at all, Rex Reason and Jeff Morrow steal this movie with good looks and talent. And the leading lady a ravishing brunette filled with talent and they all keep your attention on the screne throughout this great epic. Rex Reason is still very much with us and thank goodness he left this film for his fans for many many years to come.

4 out of 5 stars A fine film.......2007-04-15

I watched "This Island Earth" aboout five tiimes over a three week period when the disk arrived. The transfer is good, the sound is good, the film is ALL in colour so now those distracting switches to black-and-white are gone! The colouring has been done well that I couldn't spot which scenes had been done. (Its a rare case of colourisation actually benefiting a film, but I suppose it had to happen.) The film is good, huge scope, big story, big acting, special effects, pointy-breasted screaming from Faith Domergue and great music, all finishing up with a touch of huge poetry and the death of a great civilisation, the end.

Its relaxing, its good, it is somewhat thought provoking and it makes me wonder whether the big budget science fiction of today like "Matrix" will age nearly as well. Somehow, I think not.

5 out of 5 stars Classic SciFi.......2007-03-25

This is an excellent example of 50's SciFi at it's best. The special FX are top notch and the story is typical 50's. This is a must for any SciFi collection.

After the success of 1950's Destination Moon and 1951's When Worlds Collide, visionary producer George Pal brought the classic H.G. Wells story of a Martian invasion to the big screen, and it instantly became a science fiction classic and winner of the 1953 Academy Award for Best Special Effects. It's a work of frightening imagination, with its manta-ray spaceships armed with cobra-like probes that shoot a white-hot disintegration ray. As formations of alien ships continue to wreak destruction around the globe, the military is helpless to stop this enemy while scientists race to find an effective weapon. Gene Barry and Ann Robinson play the hero and heroine roles that were de rigueur for movies like this in the '50s, and their encounter with one of the Martians is as creepy today as it was in '53. It finally takes an unseen threat--simple Earth bacteria--to conquer the alien invaders, but not before War of the Worlds has provided a dazzling display of impressive special effects. As memorable for its sound effects as for its spectacular visions of destruction, this is a movie for the ages--the kind of spectacular that inspired little kids such as Steven Spielberg (not to mention Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, whose Independence Day cribs liberally from the plot) and still packs a punch. --Jeff Shannon

Description

H.G. Wells' chilling novel of a Martian invasion of Earth becomes even more frightening in this 1952 film adaptation that's widely regarded as one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time. An Oscar. winner for Best Special Effects, The War of the Worlds delivers eye-popping thrills, laser-hot action and unrelenting, edge-of-your-seat suspense. No one who has seen the film's depiction of the swan-shaped Martian machines-ticking and hissing menacingly as they cut their path of destruction-will ever forget their ominous impact.

5 out of 5 stars The War of the Worlds (1953).......2007-06-27

Based on the H.G Wells classic, "War" helped feed the public's lurid fascination with the possibility of world annihilation, with a Martian invasion standing in for nuclear attack. "Worlds" is capably directed, the cast clicks, Technicolor adds vibrancy to the picture. And George Pal's Oscar-winning special effects still work their destructive magic. Even today, this sci-fi classic remains harrowing and unforgettable, though it's a smaller, humbler version of Spielberg's behemoth remake.

4 out of 5 stars Paramount Does A Crap Job On Another DVD Release.......2007-06-23

I own this title on Laserdisc and I made my own DVD and remixed the audio tracks in 5.1 Surround Sound and had a professional video mixer make a anamorphic widescreen version, and it is fantastic. Paramount could have done all this too, but alas they never will I give **** stars for the movie and nothing for the DVD you have to watch

This is the best version, the newer makes have better special effects, however, they are over the top and take the real magic away.

5 out of 5 stars The War of the Worlds; a movie that should - nay - MUST be owned!.......2007-06-21

"The War of the Worlds." Five simple words that describes a massive motion picture made in the heart of the Atomic Age. The film plays upon the Cold War fears of a Soviet Invasion and the overthrow of the United States as well as providing us with spectacular visual effects that still send shivers down my spine. The film was released in 1953 and went on to become a science fiction classic. "The War of the Worlds" is not only a excellent movie and one of the best science fiction movies ever made, but it is also one of my favorite movies of all time and holds a special place in my heart.

I first saw "The War of the Worlds" when I was three years old on Christmas Morning. It was a Christmas Present given to the family by my Uncle. It was probably the second movie I ever saw on VHS (the first being Star Wars). Needless to say, it blew my three year old noggin' straight into Earth's orbit and came rocketing down like one of those Martian cylinders. I didn't fully grasp the plot and magnitude of the Martians' but the sounds, colors, and the designs of the war machines delighted my imagination and made a lasting impact on me.

We all grow out of certain movies from our childhood. I grew out of some movies but I grew up with "The War of the Worlds." After that Christmas, I watched it everyday until I was eight years old. No matter how many times I watched it, it never got old. I couldn't get enough of the catastrophic Martian invasion, the rhythm of the dialog between Gene Barry and Anne Robinson along with the intensity when they're trapped in the house. I love the art direction, production design, and special effects. The hissing sound of the heat ray and the pulsating rhythm before it unleashes its fiery wrath onto unsuspecting Californians. The Martian War Machines are still a marvel. They're cold, sleek, deadly, and all together Evil. You don't get that nowadays.

But enough of my emotional attachment to the film. "How is the DVD and should I buy it?" Well mysterious stranger, I'll tell you. You see, the edition has only one disc but they managed to jam pack the DVD with so much cool features that will keep you up till odd hours of the night. You get two documentaries; one on H.G. Wells, the other on the making of the movie. You get two separate commentary tracks with Director Joe Dante and veteran actor and actress Gene Barry and Anne Robinson. You also get a trailer for the movie and the original Mercury Theater Broadcast of "The War of the Worlds" staged by Orson Wells. Plenty of goodies to slake any cinema geek's appetite.

"The War of the Worlds" is probably my third favorite movie of all time and is a prised possession of mine. It's a worthy purchase and a must have for any film geek or science fiction nerd. The effects still holds up and never fails to thrill its audience. I love this film and strongly recommend it to all those who haven't seen it before and to all those who failed to buy the DVD. I strongly suggest that you go out and buy it immediately, you will not regret it. I guarantee.

4 out of 5 stars Far better than the Tom Cruise crap.......2007-06-13

Witty, Interesting, and lovable.

All things that were not the Tom cruise movie.

The story is different. The aliens land in California, invade US and world and cannot be destroyed even by A-bombs.

The begining and end match the original book.

Good for about 3-watches.

Nancy Archer has had an alien encounter and it's left her 50 ft. tall! Now she sees the men in her life from a new angle--looking down on them--and it's time to fight back! Director: Nathan Juran Starring: Allison Hayes, Yvette Vickers, William Hudson

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars ROMP HOUSE.......2007-07-04

You can see through her. She doesn't quite get to 50ft in some scenes, while in others she's taller than the title promises (a bonus there). On the cover she has auburn hair, on the back, she's a blond and in the film, its dark. She drinks too much, loves too hard, has too much money for her own good and always falls for the wrong man - she is the 50ft WOMAN and she is on the ATTACK, but only in the last few moments of the film... as for the rest... it's a tale of a woman hooked on sour mash and her man, who's looking for fresh grapes.

Love hurts. ATTACK OF THE 50FT WOMAN is a cautionary tale of what happens when aliens meddle in romance and what path of destruction a 50ft woman will leave in her wake trying to right the wrongs done to her. It's a campy, well shot, well performed, sketchy effects cocktail that is sure to leave you calling for another round, but at a mere 66 mins, closing time comes too early for this classy little film. ATTACK is a lot of fun, and more serious than you first realize, and honestly seems like two different films grafted together, yet neither completes (or compliments) the other very well. But, you don't really notice it too much as the film hurtles along from one idea to the next until the end.

Commentary is included with Tom Weaver and Yvette Vickers (HONEY PARKER), and Yvette brings much of her experience both on ATTACK and on her acting career to the table, while Weaver brings a copy of her original script (with her handwritten notes), and some solid background information on the production - but, unlike other commentaries where Weaver is alone, he does not relate the full story, instead he interviews Vickers for information and insight. It's good, it's funny, and you do learn a lot, but I did miss the rapid fire delivery and depth of backstory that Weaver has brought to other commentaries.

ATTACK is a smart film. The title and suggestive, yet inaccurate, poster art may turn some people away, but for the brave, and for the fans, ATTACK is a must have, and no collection would be complete without it.

5 out of 5 stars FEISTY FIFTIES FEMME FLAILS THRU FIFTY FOOT FREAKOUT!.......2007-06-13

Jeez, can't a guy spend an enjoyable evening quietly two-timing his wife in a seedy dive without her giant rubber hand smashing through the ceiling to stub out his worthless life like a stale cigarette? Well ... apparently not. At least, that is the disquieting possibility explored in Attack Of The 50 Foot Woman, a grade-Z sci-fi classic from the 50's. Brimming with bargain basement effects, cardboard characters, and cheese whiz dialog, it is completely wonderful in its awfulness - or awful in its wonderfulness, if you prefer. It's certainly a giant rubber hand slap across the kisser to anyone who thought that the Donna Reed decade was all about female conformance and passivity. Hah! This dreckathon gamely puts paid to those stereotypes, what with an oversized Allison Hayes, nursing an outsized anti-hubby grudge, ripping the roofs off Hicksville to exact a super-family-sized spousal payback. Yes, it's the battle of the sexes waged on a giant scale - or a fifty-foot scale, anyway. Make sure you see it with someone you love ... it's the perfect couples movie!

1 out of 5 stars One Star schlock = cult classic: It's so bad, it's good!!!!!.......2007-05-02

Like a previous writer, I grew up in suburban New York (Darien, CT.) watching Chiller Theatre every Saturday night with my older brother: The Cyclops, Frankenstein's Daughter, The Hideous Sun Demon, Plan 9 from Outer Space and this classic, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman.

I love this film, because it represents a time when kids and teens were easier to please with regard to movies. I remember being facsinated by the giant alien - who looks like a bald gladiator, picking up the sheriff's car with his hand and throwing it down on the ground. For a five year old in 1961, that was scary. All those movies on Chiller Theatre (on WPIX Ch. 11, New York)were scary, and my brother and I always looked forward to watching these movies every Saturday night at 8:30-10:00.(Yes, I was allowed to stay awake until 10pm on Saturdays, just to watch Chiller Theatre.) You have to appreciate the 50's sci-fi mentality to enjoy this film. Special effects are cheesy, but then, who cares? This stuff s all about nostalgia and growing up in a simpler, more innocent time.

5 out of 5 stars Loads of fun.........2007-04-26

Why is it that some movies that aren't that good fun to watch??Some hold up and some don't.I must admit,I love this movie, even though I expected to see what was on the poster, but maybe they didn't have the budget.First off,you have to ask one simple question:How does she fit in that house when she's big?? Are her arms and legs sticking out of the windows or what? The truth is that it doesn't matter.Just have fun with it and enjoy!I could see MST3K riffing on this and maybe you will,if you decide to purchase this.If not, don't take it seriously and enjoy it for what it is..Allison Hayes was a great B movie actress who died too young,so check out her other films, too, like THE UNDEAD or THE GUNSLINGER.Just to name a few..This is NOT serious sci-fi,but who cares?? It's a fun movie..check it out!

3 out of 5 stars Don' t take it too seriously!.......2005-12-19

If you have nothing to do, the weather is rainy and cold and there is nothing to watch or even read in your home, come for this amazing and grotesque characterization. It is delirious portrait of fantastic humor, if I may use this term.

4 out of 5 stars I love 1950's & early 60's alien movies .......2007-03-14

It Came From Outer Space is a good movie to watch. I like the story and the scenes in the desert. Richard Carlson, Barbara Rush and Charles Drake did an excellent job. I liked the story.

5 out of 5 stars It! is a wonderful movie and great sellers.......2007-03-13

It! Came from Outer Space is truely one of those "bad" horror films that are just plain fun to watch with a bowl of popcorn and some friends. The seller described the condition of the movie perfectly and shipped it safely and quickly.

4 out of 5 stars 50s sci-fi masterpiece.......2007-03-10

I love these old sci-fi films. The black and white filming and the old cars and scenes add to the theme of these old forgotten films. When you compare horror films of today to these old 50s masterpieces the 50s flicks take you back to a forgotten time and the horror in them is typical of that time era. This film reminds me of when I was very young watching them on our old round screen Admiral TV. A very good film from a long forgotten time. Would recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Classic sci-fi.......2007-02-26

This one is a classic that sci-fi funs should not miss. It plays with the fears and questions that existed at the time the film was made and, if I correctly recalled, the producers did not allow any pictures of the alien been taken during production so as not to ruin the surprise of the audience. Enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars it came from outer space.......2006-11-10

I like the story line of this movie, but most of all I remember watching it when I was a kid of seven. It was scary back then, even with limited special effects and no graphic details. Watching it now was very enjoyable I found myself going back in time. This film is in its own right a science fiction classic.

Steven Spielberg's alien abduction opus Taken is what happens when you cross-breed Close Encounters of the Third Kind with The Waltons. Obviously flushed with the success of the TV miniseries Band of Brothers, Spielberg's Dreamworks studio has created an equally epic 10-part story chronicling 50 years of habitual abduction over several generations of three American families. Beginning with the most notorious alien cover-up in U.S. history, the 1947 "crash" at Roswell, New Mexico, Taken introduces the "Greys" and the families they routinely abduct, probe, and, in a couple of cases, impregnate over the course of the ten 90-minute episodes. The three families are: the Keys, from which first Russell, then his son Jessie, then grandson Danny, are all abducted; the Clarkes, who are descended from a liaison between lonely put-upon housewife Sally Clarke and one of the Roswell crash survivors; and the Crawfords, the ruthless G-men who are committed to uncovering the purpose behind the alien visitations at any cost.

It's this question that forms the main thread of the story: but even though the Greys' actions are at best ambiguous and at worst hostile, the viewer can't help feeling that after all this systematic abuse of their human test subjects the aliens will in the end present them with a cure for cancer. In fact, Taken is Spielberg at his most touchy-feely: for all its science fiction trappings it's basically a soap opera, lacking the sinister undercurrent of either Dark Skies or The X-Files. Nevertheless, it's an engaging series with decent performances--most notably Joel Gretsch as psychotic Owen Crawford--good special effects, and an engaging enough storyline to make it entertaining, if somewhat disposable, TV. --Kristen Bowditch

I just spent the entire weekend viewing taken
and i have to admit it was a very well spent time. The story was very interesting despite what other reviewers said. But I have to say my favorite character was Dakota Fanning (Allie)
She really stole the show from the time she entered the picture.Your heart really went out to this little girl.It started out with an alien craft crash in 1947 and really held your interest all the way threw. It went threw 5 generations of families with a fantastic cast.
and a very moving climax. Dakota even did great job narrating

4 out of 5 stars Marvellous television.......2007-01-17

My wife spotted this on one of the German channels and became a fan, so we acquired the DVDs. OK, the story is pure hokum and the characters can be decidedly odd, ranging from the angelic, wise-beyond-her-years Ally to the villainous Crawford tribe, who are so bad that you have to resist the temptation to boo them every time they appear, as in a traditional English pantomime. But it gets you in. Part of the appeal appears to be that the thing is just so beautifully realised - the contemporary settings seem absolutely perfect - that it's irresistible. You find yourself wishing that that there were really something to it - and perhaps this is the other part of the appeal, something encountered in "The X-Files", that there is something beyond what is officially presented and that it's being covered up. Perhaps there's something in us that enjoys a good conspiracy theory, perhaps because we like to think that the world isn't just a series of accidents and happenstances. Whatever it is, I thoroughly enjoyed this series.

5 out of 5 stars "I loved it" review.......2007-01-17

Whenever Steven Speilberg is involved, you know you won't be disappointed.
I loved watching the series. It pulled me right into the lives of three different families and their encounters with extraterrestrials over a number of generations. I did't want it to end! It is defintely something I would watch again. Also it was fun to see Dakota Fanning at such a young age. It also makes you wonder.....Could there be?.......Hmmmm............

After about five years this little gem is still getting rave reviews. I purchased this a few years ago for 90 bucks. I do not buy box sets or season dvd's of any tv show. I never would have thought that taken of all things would make me break down and by a box set dvd but it did . I do not even like Alien movies and I am not into the ex files but I love this mini series because it was well written and acted. You will love this if you buy it but shop around $ 107.00 is a lot.
BY the way I guess I am breaking my rule again I cannot wait for season one of Hero's to come out on dvd when it does it is as good as sold.
I may not love Alien movies but I have a fondness for superhero movies.

Nineteen thirty-nine is often proposed as the movies' halcyon year, and three reasons why were directed by John Ford: Stagecoach, Young Mr. Lincoln, and Drums Along the Mohawk. In that exalted company Drums... would have to be accounted "merely superb"--even if it's the best film ever made about the American Revolution and, oh, only about eighth-best picture of its year.

Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert play newlyweds in New York's Mohawk Valley at the time of the Revolutionary War. That war is more a distant rumor than a direct concern of people with cabins to raise, crops to harvest, and firstborn on the way. When it comes to their valley, in the form of hitherto-peaceable Indians whipped up by a gaunt Tory with an eyepatch (John Carradine), life changes as though with the passing of a cloud shadow.

In this, his first color film, Ford created indelible images of the dawning of America: a lone wagon making its way through acres of long grass rippling in the wind; the Indians, at the onset of their first raid, seeming to materialize out of the mist, out of the very trunks of trees; a ragged line of farmers with flintlocks passing along a split-rail fence, then resolving into a column, an army, marching toward a distant horizon. (Utah's Wasatch mountain country stands in persuasively for upstate New York in pioneer days.) Edna May Oliver scored a best-supporting-actress Oscar nomination as a memorably crusty frontier widow, while Ward Bond--oddly omitted from the opening credits--claimed a place of honor in the John Ford Stock Company playing Fonda's best friend. --Richard T. Jameson

Description

Lawless frontier. Indian attacks. Settlers protecting themselves the only way they know how-with guns and courage. In the years before the Revolutionary War, the East was as wild as the West would be one hundred years later. Henry Fonda delivers one of his most memorable performances ever as a young frontier leader protecting his family in the backwoods of New York state. Claudette Colbert so-stars as his spirited wife. With a fine supporting cast that also includes Edna May Oliver and John Carradine, this is one of John Ford's most exciting historical dramas.

5 out of 5 stars A Rare Revolutionary War Classic.......2007-06-09

There are relatively few really good films pertaining to the Revolutionary War era, and this is one of the very best. It is a very fast-moving story of a young newlywed couple (Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert) who move from the comfort of the city to the rustic and eminently dangerous 1770s upstate New York, in the Mohawk Valley, where the settlers continually battle the elements and the Indians, who fight the colonists as the proxies of the British. The film will definitely hold the viewer's interest as the couple, their community, and the young nation battle to survive. An outstanding film, on the same level as "Sergeant York!"

4 out of 5 stars Not-horrible portrayal of Indians.......2007-06-08

I give it an 8.0 of 10 for its anti-war message and its not-totally-bad portrayal of Indians. For more on the subject, see the review at [...]

5 out of 5 stars Everythings in it!.......2007-05-20

I had never heard of this movie when I came upon it. I of course had heard of Claudette Colbert, Henry Fonda & my favorite Edna May Oliver, but never this movie. What a nice surprise we had when we watched it. My husband, granddaughter & myself all were wrapped up in this from the beginning. I wished they'd make more like these instead of the junk today.

5 out of 5 stars A great Fonda classic.......2007-05-12

Add this to Young Mr. Lincoln, The Return of Frank James, and Jesse James as young Henry Fonda classics. Another actor you'll see in all of them is Eddie Collins. In Drums Along The Mohawk, he plays Christian, the rolly polly roll caller. Just another funny Collins performance for comic relief.

4 out of 5 stars Drums along the Mohawk.......2007-03-09

This has long been a favorite and now I have it on DVD. This movie has quality throughout. First Class movie.

5 out of 5 stars What can I say?.......2007-05-30

This movie scared the hell out of me when I was a little kid. Is there any other service for a B movie like this? The dark elements of the woman being suicidal, etc. made it even creepier, for a 50's horror movie. I can see it being re-made, sort of Independence Day mixed with Night of the Living Dead, only the zombies would be robots. I think I'm having an Ed Wood moment...

3 out of 5 stars A little below the usual B-movie standard.......2007-02-16

I hate to come down on B-movies. Even though a lot of people think they're cheesy and cheap, I feel they project a certain creativity. "It! The Terror from Beyond Space" (1958), "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla" (1974)--but not "Target Earth" (1954) as much.
The plot and concept were perfect, in theory. A city has been evacuated due to the invasion of robots, most likely from Venus. A few stragglers must battle their way to freedom and safety.
However, the only sci-fi element used in the film was a robot--who represented a whole army of them. No spaceships--blurry laser beams and hollow acting.
"Target Earth" (1954) isn't that bad. If my copy didn't work any more, then I'd still buy another.

4 out of 5 stars Old Fashion Sci Fi.......2006-11-04

I enjoyed this movie years ago when I was younger. Believe it or not it is still as good as I remember. Suspense, bad acting, crummy special effects. This is how movies were made back then without all the flash and gore this is still a good movie.

3 out of 5 stars Target Earth - Not a Classic, but deserves a chance........2006-09-01

While Target Earth may not be a well known, classic Sci-Fi movie, it certainly gives a decent swing at the genre. Being Herman Cohen's first solo-produced film, Target Earth most definately IS science fiction. The plot of the film is one of the most frightening and classic ideas in the anals of sci-fi - that of the Earth being invaded by beings from another world. The threat in Target Earth, however, is an encroaching vanguard of robots which precede the actual alien invasion. A novel idea indeed. The acting in TE is good, with Richard Denning (Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Day the World Ended, The Black Scorpion) cast as the hero.
If you enjoy watching and collecting classic sci-fi from the 1950s, then Target Earth will make an excellent addition to your DVD library.

Specal footnote, producer Herman Cohen (August 27, 1925 - June 2, 2002) was a producer of B-movies during the 1950s, who helped to popularize the teen horror movie genre with films like the cult classic "I Was a Teenage Werewolf" (1957)...his motion picture career began at his local cinema, the Dexter Theater in Detroit, during his preteen years; he worked there as a "gofer" and later as an usher...his next stop was assistant manager of Detroit's Fox Theater. After a Marine Corps hitch, Cohen worked as sales manager for the Detroit branch of Columbia Pictures, then relocated to Hollywood and worked in the publicity department of Columbia there. He produced his first movies for Jack Broder's Realart Pictures in the early 1950s and made several subsequent pictures for Allied Artists and United Artists. Cohen made exploitation history in the mid-1950s when he began producing some of American International's earliest hits, among them the cult favorite "I Was a Teenage Werewolf." (1957) featuring unknown horror actor Michael Landon as a troubled teenager and Whit Bissell as the primary adult. It was written and produced by cult film producer Herman Cohen, it was made on a very low budget but grossed as much as US$2,000,000 per week in its early weeks of release, and was one of the most successful films released by AIP (American International Pictures)..Herman Cohen's filmography, The Bushwhackers (1952), Kid Monk Baroni (1952), Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla (1952), Battles of Chief Pontiac (1952), River Beat (1954), Target Earth (1954), Magnificent Roughnecks (1956), Dance with Me Henry (1956), The Brass Legend (1956), Crime of Passion (1957), I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957), I Was a Teenage Frankenstein (1957), Blood of Dracula (1957), How to Make a Monster (1958), Horrors of the Black Museum (1959), The Headless Ghost (1959), Konga (1961), Black Zoo (1963), A Study in Terror (1965), Berserk! (1968), Django il bastardo (1969), Crooks and Coronets (1969), Trog (1970), Craze (1973), Gatto dagli occhi di giada, Il (1977)...In the 1960s and 1970s, he began producing horror films in the United Kingdom, working with such stars as Joan Crawford in "Berserk"! and "Trog" and Jack Palance in Craze. In 1961, he returned to his roots in Detroit purchasing the Fox Theater he had worked for in his youth. By the late 1970s, Cohen was working more in writing and distribution than in film production. He founded Cobra Media, a domestic distribution company, in 1981. Cohen died of throat cancer June 2, 2002.
