If Clive Barker had written an episode of The Twilight Zone, it might have looked something like Cube. A handful of strangers wake up inside a bizarre maze, having been spirited there during the night. They quickly learn that they have to navigate their way through a series of chambers if they have any hope of escape, but the problem is that there are lethal traps awaiting if they choose their route unwisely. Having established some imaginative and grisly punishments in store for the hostages, cowriter and director Vincenzo Natali turns his attention to the characters, for whom being trapped amplifies their best and worst qualities. The film is, in fact, similar to a famous episode of Rod Serling's old television series, though Natali's explanation for why these poor people are being put through hell is a lot closer to the spirit of The X-Files. Cube has some solid moments of suspense and drama, and the sets are appropriately striking: one is tempted to believe at first the characters are lost inside a computer chip. --Tom Keogh

A confident hybrid of M*A*S*H, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and Dr. Strangelove, Three Kings is one of the most seriously funny war movies ever made. Improving the premise of Kelly's Heroes with scathing intelligence, it explores the odd connection between war and consumerism in the age of Humvees and cellular phones. Writer-director David O. Russell's third film (after Spanking the Monkey and Flirting with Disaster), it's a no-holds-barred portrait of personal conscience in the volatile arena of politics, played out by one of the most gifted filmmakers to emerge in the 1990s.

George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube, and Spike Jonze (director of Being John Malkovich) play a quartet of U.S. soldiers who, disillusioned by Operation Desert Storm, decide to steal $23 million in gold hijacked from Kuwait by Saddam Hussein's army. Getting the bullion out of an Iraqi stronghold is easy; keeping it is a potentially lethal proposition. By the end of their mercenary mission, the Americans can no longer ignore wartime atrocities (and neither can we--the film is boldly unflinching), and conscience demands their aid to Iraqi rebels abandoned by President George Bush's fickle wartime policy. This is serious stuff indeed, but Russell infuses Three Kings with a keen sense of the absurd, and the entire film is an exercise in breathtaking visual ingenuity. Despite a conventional ending that's mildly disappointing for such a brashly original film, Three Kings conveys the brutal madness of war while making you laugh out loud at the insanity. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Clever, funny and different.......2007-06-23

David O. Russel's 'Three Kings' is a hard film to lock down into a particular genre. It combines elements of a war movie, a comedy and a drama, and manages to do it very well. People wanting to see lots of big guns and bombs should stay well clear, there are video games to keep you amused. Anyone who appreciates witty, clever and slightly off beat films is well advised to see it.

Telling the untold story of the Gulf War, with Saddam's army more worried about shooting rebel Iraqis then allied soldiers, was a brave move in Hollywood, because many people don't want to know that a democratic uprising in Iraq was being crushed while the Allies sat by in the desert. Rather than being an action movie, the film develops into an exploration of three soldiers and the human development caused by their experience of the war, and the extraordinary circumstances they place themselves in.

Many innovative and experimental cinematic styles are used nicely, and solid performances are recorded by Clooney, Wahlberg, Jonze and Cube. The characters are portrayed as normal human beings, both noble and flawed at the same time, and even the Iraqi soldiers are seen as people rather than typical war movie bad guy cannon fodder. This film genuinely showed me the desperation felt by many Iraqis for the Allies to help them as they starved and fought desperately against Saddam.

One of my favorite films, and probably one of the most underrated films of its time

3 out of 5 stars Don't like Clooney, what are you Looney?.......2007-05-13

Sorry about the title, Three kings was not a movie I chose to see on the big screen. My wife recommended it and I found it was an entertaining flick. Not a desert storm movie like Jar Heads, a different take on an old story line.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Adventure film set In Iraq after Gulf War 1.......2007-04-09

A group of Gi's in Kuwait following the first Gulf War find a map on a prisoner that leads them back across the border on a gold hunt. The country is in a state of chaos with Sadam's soldiers taking their revenge on anti- Sadam citizens. The GI's get caught up in a more complicated situation with refugees then they planned on.
Well conceived and written with excellent special effects, this is a hard movie to categorize. It's sort of Oceans 11 goes to Iraq, A combination military adventure/heist movie with some interesting social commentary and moralizing thrown in.
All three of the principal actors do a good job but Ice Cube is particularly good in this. George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg are fine in their respective roles.
Definitely entertaining and different.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie.......2007-03-30

This is a good movie that starts out as an adventure and slowly changes into a morality movie. I like it and think its setting is contemporary and timely.

2 out of 5 stars Very ordinary..........2007-03-23

This was a critically lauded film, so when I went in, I had high expectations. Roger Ebert himself called it a masterpiece. I saw it, and it was certainly interesting, but I immediately forgot about it right after I left the theater. There really isn't much depth here. It's more reminiscent of getting a quick rush from something, then after it wears off, you don't even remember how you felt afterwards. I remember a scene where a cow is blown up, but other than that, it's hard for me to remember anything about it. It ultimately was very ordinary, and not a really deep film about war.

Second in a series of four box sets, Cult Camp Classics 2: Women In Peril includes three films in which victimized female protagonists provide the viewer hours of entertainment. Watching Caged, Trog, and The Big Cube consecutively provides lots of laughs, but also makes one wonder what exactly satisfies about this archetype while ladies struggle through run-ins with drug dealers, hardened prison matrons, and a hairy cave-dwelling monster, in these cases. Each indicative of the decades in which they were made, these films reiterate how cinematic narratives have long capitalized on the viewer's hope that woman will either escape or get revenge. Caged, considered the first women's prison film, follows Marie Allen (Eleanor Parker), who is imprisoned for acquiescing to her husband's desire to rob a store. Prison cell bar shadows cast across the screen, and repeated close-ups of Allen's horrified face, make Caged a fine example of film noir. With little to laugh at, viewer sympathy mounts as Allen acclimatizes to the rough prison life, and conversely, disappointment sets in when one sees her innocence slipping away. One comes to hate the evil prison matron, Evelyn Harper (Hope Emerson), who believes in iron-thumb treatment. Caged is a rare example in its genre in which sexual exploitation is not at the core of the film. Trog and The Big Cube are less tragic, more schlocky, and fascinating as a pair due their gorgeous stars, Lana Turner and Joan Crawford, cast late in their careers. Trog is a hairy, pre-human cave dweller á la Planet of the Apes, wreaking havoc once unleashed by an anthropologist played by the ravishing Crawford. The Big Cube's greatest assets are the scenes depicting acid trips induced by Johnny (George Chakiris), a medical student who cooks LSD to dose sexy girls and enemies. Psychedelic lighting freak-outs overpower the drama regarding young hipster Lisa's (Karin Mossberg) step-mom, Adriana, (Lana Turner) who is driven mad by Johnny so he can marry Lisa for her hefty inheritance. Although none of these films will scare a female viewer, they offer three wonderful renditions of fear-based roles mastered by some of the sexiest women in Hollywood. --Trinie Dalton

4 out of 5 stars Crawford, Turner & Parker light up the screen in B-movie marathon.......2007-06-20

Warners has dug into the archives to produce this fabulous box-set containing three B-movie treasures. Starring three of the most talented women to ever grace the screen, fans of classic movies are bound to get a kick out of this.

TROG (released in 1970) has gained quite the cult following over the years, mainly because it features Joan Crawford--mommie dearest herself--in what turned out to be her final movie role. Crawford plays anthropologist Dr. Brockton, who stumbles across the missing link, a hulking ape-man creature, who goes on a killing spree. Crawford's deadly serious performance as the overwhelmed Brockton is the icing on the cake for this journey into Schlock City. There's also some fine work from serial upstager Michael Gough.

THE BIG CUBE (released in 1969) is similarly-notable for featuring Lana Turner, former M-G-M "Sweater Girl". Turner must have needed the money badly, because this strange journey into psychedelia is a heaping pile of doggy-do. She plays Adriana Roman, a retiring actress (go figure), whose conniving stepdaughter tries to have committed after drugging her with LSD. George Chakiris ("West Side Story"), Dan O'Herlihy (Turner's love interest in "Imitation of Life") and Karin Mossberg co-star, all happy to slum it in Z-grade territory.

CAGED (released in 1950) was actually a prestige production from Warner Brothers. Along the same themes as "I Want to Live!", the story concerns a young woman, Mary Allen (Eleanor Parker) who is thrown into the big dollhouse and straight into the sadistic claws of Matron Harper (Hope Emerson). Eleanor Parker (in her greatest role aside from "Detective Story") delivers an Oscar-nominated performance. Agnes Moorehead and Betty Garde are memorable here too.

With this box-set, THE BIG CUBE and CAGED are receiving their home video debuts. While I completely understand the reasons why Warners was reluctant to unleash BIG CUBE onto an unsuspecting world; CAGED deserves to be rediscovered. As for TROG, well...any film with Crawford can't be all bad.

These DVDs are also available individually, but the box-set will ultimately be the cheaper option to grab all three movies in one hit.

4 out of 5 stars CAGED is a powerful drama with remarkable performances.......2007-03-27

TROG with Joan Crawford and THE BIG CUBE with Lana Tuner are truly camp classics, but CAGED is a serious and absorbing drama starring Oscar-nominated Eleanor Parker in the lead role. She delivers a complex and memorable performance as a young, pregnant prison inmate. Her Oscar competition in 1950 was staggering: Gloria Swanson for Sunset Boulevard, Bette Davis and Anne Baxter for All About Eve and the winner, Judy Holliday for Born Yesterday. Agnes Moorehead does an excellent job as a sympathetic but ineffectual prison warden, but the performance you will never forget goes to Oscar-nominated Hope Emerson, who dominates every one of her scenes as the cruel and sadistic prison matron. Lee Patrick appears as the a wealthy and influential prison inmate lusting for the Eleanor Parker character. Betty Garde, Jan Sterling, Gertrude Michael, Ellen Corby, Olive Deering and Jane Darwell are excellent in supporting roles. This is a memorable film which was shocking in it's time and still delivers a strong punch for today's audiences. I am not sure CAGED belongs in the camp category, but I am happy to have it on DVD anyway I can get it. I give CAGED 5 stars on it's own, but the other two films in this collection bring my rating down to four stars, although they rate higher with fans of cult camp flicks.

5 out of 5 stars Crawford fans rejoice; it's finally coming!.......2007-03-21

Have been waiting about fifteen years now to see Joan Crawford's final film, 'Trog' and the wait is over at last. A description of the plot along with the other two included:

The Big Cube (1969):
Adriana Roman (Lana Turner), is a former actress who marries a wealthy tycoon Charles Winthrop, who dies in a boat accident off the Mexican coast. Winthrop's daughter, Lisa, whom despises Adriana, plot to drive her insane with drugs so she and her drug-addict boyfriend, Johnny, can marry and inherit all the money for themselves. When a Broadway playwright, named Frederick Lansdale, and a close friend of Adriana suspects something, he tries to rescue Adriana from the mental hospital where she gets committed and redeem Lisa before Johnny can double cross her.

Caged (1950):
Frightened 19-year-old Marie Allen (Eleanor Parker) gets sent to an Illinois penitentiary for being an accomplice in an armed robbery. A sympathetic prison head (Agnes Moorehead) tries to help, but her efforts are subverted by cruel matron Evelyn Harper (Hope Emerson). Marie's harsh experiences turn her from doe-eyed innocent to hard-nosed con.

Trog (1970):
In England, some students are mysteriously murdered. A search team is sent out to kill the creature suspected of killing the students. The creature is captured and brought to anthropologist, Br. Brockton (Miss Joan Crawford). Dr. Brockton realizes the creature is the "TROG" the missing link between man and ape. She decides to study it and educate it. Just as she was making progress, "TROG" escapes and abducts a little girl. Brockton and colleagues franticly search for Trog hoping to find it before the police do...

What a bonus that these titles will be released on the superior WHV label and at a bargain price.

Friday is the rarest specimen of African American cinema: a 'hood movie refreshingly free of the semiseriousness and moralism of shoot 'em up soaps such as Boyz N the Hood, yet still true to the inner-city experience.

Scripted by rapper Ice Cube, Friday is a no-frills tale of a typical day in the life of a pair of African American youth in South Central. Cube plays Craig, a frustrated teen who endures the ultimate humiliation: getting fired on his day off. Then unknown Chris Tucker plays Smokey, a marijuana-worshipping homeboy whose love for the green stuff lands him in predicament after predicament.

Sitting on the stoop of Craig's rundown home, the two hilariously confront a kaleidoscopic array of gangbangers, weed dealers, crack heads, prostitutes, scheming girlfriends, and neighborhood bullies--all of whom, it should be noted, come off as sympathetic even as they are being caricatured, a true achievement in the crass, "booty call" environment of '90s African American comedy. --Ethan Brown

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very funny movie.......2007-05-21

This is a great movie...simiple...funny...just a day in the life of some young guys who are bored. Most people can relate.

4 out of 5 stars "Can I borrow y'all VCR? I need to dub a tape...".......2007-03-01

I've seen this movie many and I mean many times. It's very funny and it simply shouldn't be analyzed. A plot doesn't exist in this comedy, nor is this a character-driven vehicle, but it's a wild ride from start to finish without much of a high budget.

"Friday" is an urban comedy that depicts a single day in the life of Craig (Ice Cube), who has just been fired on his day off. Craig's off day consists of interactions with various characters in the neighborhood. They include his cantankerous dad (John Witherspoon); his lovable mother (Anna Maria Horsford); his sister Dana (Regina King); his spoilt girlfriend Joi (Paula Jai Parker); his love interest (Nia Long); Deebo (Tiny "Zeus" Lister Jr.) the hulking neighborhood bully; Big Worm (Faizon Love) the neighborhood gangster; and his token friend Smokey (Chris Tucker).

There's not a lot that can be said about the acting and most of the help comes from the supporting characters. Such as, Chris Tucker who steals the show with his landmark role as ultra-pothead Smokey. Tucker has that unrelenting comic energy that only a comedian of supreme talent can possess. Even when the film falls flat, he picks you back up. I also have to commend John Witherspoon, as Ice Cube's father. I loved him on "The Wayans Bros." and I loved him in this movie. Though I was laughing most of the time, the gags are indeed crude--very crude. And sometimes that crudeness just wears out. Luckily, it's not too often, and there are some memorable lines and memorable moments in "Friday."

I feel as though this is one of the better movies about the hood. It' really more than just a comedy instead it puts forth a deeper meaning in life. It is about facing one's fears and becoming a man. In one scene, the father sees Craig with a gun and tells him that holding a gun won't make him man; it's having the courage to fight with his fists that will. Now, I know this doesn't sound like the greatest thing for a parent to be telling his kid, but in the projects fighting with one's hands instead of picking up a gun is courageous. This movie is great to own as well as the Ice Cube-based sound track.

This movie is one of the Classics for anyone that was a teenager or in their early 20's back in the mid 90's. Its almost a have to have for the DVD Collection. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Instant Classic - Made Chris Tucker a star................2007-01-02

What would life be without your slacker homeboys? It seems like they take life less serious and have all of the fun. At least that's what this hood classic is about when Craig gets fired on his day off for allegedly stealing boxes. So Smoke Dog comes to save the day with a little of that sticky icky. Problem is that the weed belongs to Big Worm. The rest is hood comedy at its finest.

DJ Pooh steals the show as the lame who gets punked by Debo. Hilarious!

John Singleton, at the age of 23, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his debut film, Boyz N the Hood. The film stars Laurence Fishburne, Angela Basset, Ice Cube, and Academy Award-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. in his first starring role in a feature film. Gooding plays Tre Styles, a teenager growing up in South Central Los Angeles. His father, Furious (Fishburne), is divorced and living away from Tre and his mother (Basset), but he's still involved in Tre's upbringing, teaching him the values of right and wrong and responsibility. Meanwhile, Tre's childhood buddies Ricky (Morris Chestnut) and Doughboy (Ice Cube) are living their lives in terms of the epidemic of violence and poverty that has plagued their neighborhood. Ricky, a talented football player, strives to get a full athletic scholarship to college. If only his SAT scores were higher. Doughboy lives a life full of crime but still remains true to his friends. The obstacles that these three young men come across result in dire consequences, devastatingly avoidable and inevitable at the same time. Boyz N the Hood is a landmark film beyond its commercial success, presenting a portrait of South Central in the late '80s and early '90s as painted by Singleton (who grew up in that neighborhood), achieving accuracy and dramatic resonance in this story of at-risk youth. --Shannon Gee

5 out of 5 stars Best look at the hood to date.......2007-05-17

Everyone I have talked to who has seen this movie says the same thing; "That was a really good movie!". It is much more. This movie came out of John Singleton's personal experiences with racism and crime in South Central, like Spike Lee with "Do the Right Thing". But this movie was one of the first of many urban-crime films to come (i.e. New Jack City, Juice, Menace II Society, Dead Presidents). Ice Cube, a rapper at the time, made his film debut as Doughboy, the drug dealer who does the most crime on the streets on South Central. Cuba Gooding, Jr. also made his debut as Tre, a man whose father (Laurence Fishburne) teaches him how to be responsible and making the right choices. The performances were great, The rare Soundtrack had cool songs like Cube's "South Central" song and this movie is best of many crime films, not like the gangster films though.

Singleton just put together the perfect movie to depict his old neighborhood, it's just a shame that none of his recent work is as good as Boyz N The Hood. If you are a fan of gangster films, or just good movies in general, you will like Boyz N The Hood.

3 out of 5 stars a career deferred withers & dries.......2007-04-07

john singleton was in hisearly 20s when he directed this movie and was supposed to become one of the great directors; unfortunately he has done nothing in the nearly 20 years since to justify that early bit of over-praise. what we DO have here is a good but uneven debut feature drawn from the experiences its creative team had lived thru in growing up in the LA ghetto, highlighted by solid acting turns by laurence fishburne, cuba gooding, and especially morris chestnut. like so much of the african-american community, singleton seems to be an artist of unfulfilled promise. sad.

5 out of 5 stars The godfather of gangsta.......2007-01-18

This is definitely a monumental film. Boyz-in-the-Hood blew open the door for the director, several of the cast members, plus this particular genre.
Although it is a violent film, it's actually a story about family. A street-smart father (Furious) trying to raise his son (Tre) amid the extreme dangers of life in South Cental L.A.
I love the rapport that is established between the two. Furious is strict, perhaps overbearing, but only acts out of necessity. He is also very honest and involved in Tre's life in order to keep him out of trouble. I admire the tough questions Furious asks his son too, like "what do you know about sex?" or "what'd you use?" (such as condoms for safe sex).
Although this relationship if my favorite aspect, their are countless other great reasons to watch this movie. Like the chaotic but real look at urban life, where danger is constantly lurking. Or the enduring bonds that are formed between friends. The entire movie is packed with action, humor, and emotion.
Boyz-n-the Hood had a major impact on my life.

3 out of 5 stars BOYz N Da HOOD.......2007-01-10

this movie is a gangsta movie classic and a must have for any youth who grew up in the ninetys. it displays real street life growing up in south central LA and displays a very graphic tradgedy ending.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Urban Drama!.......2006-12-18

This movie was an absolute classic! It is a real and touching depiction of three young black men growing up in South Central Los Angeles. Tre Styles (Cuba Gooding Jr) is sent by his mother (Angela Bassett) to live with his father Furious Styles (Laurence Fishburne) after getting into a fight at school. Tre has a caring father who teaches him valuable life lessons while the situation for his buddies Ricky Baker and his half-brother Darren "Doughboy" Baker is very different. Ricky is a good, if not very bright, kid who is heavily favored by his mother (Tyra Ferrell) who has nothing but contempt and disparaging words for Doughboy. A few years later, we see that Tre (now played by Cuba Gooding Jr) is growing into a responsible young man with a bright future. Ricky (now played by Morris Chestnut) and Doughboy (now played by Ice Cube) are going in completely different directions. Ricky is a football star hoping that a college scholarship will get him out of "The Hood" while Doughboy is a shiftless small time drug dealer and gangbanger who is a walking time bomb. Ricky also happens to be the father of a toddler son. A violent and tragic turn of events eventually puts Furious' upbringing of Tre to the ultimate test.

Contrary to what many who haven't seen the movie may think, it isn't just about gangbanging. Many compare the numerous "hood" movies that came in later years to "Boyz" but those comparisons couldn't be further off the mark. Unlike the others which were basically capitalizing on the fascination with, and at times glorifying, thuggery and "hood" culture, "Boyz" actually had powerful messages not only about the senselessness of inner city violence and the need to stop it but about the importance of young black men having positive male figures in their lives. While many would write Doughboy off as just another worthless thug, you're actually left feeling sorry for him and understanding why he turned out the way he did. The first time I ever cried watching a movie (and I rarely do so to this day) was the climactic scene where Ricky's promising life is cut short and that is a testament to how well written and deep "Boyz" really is. Other unforgettable scenes are when Tre is threatened by the self-hating black cop and when he breaks down at Brandi's house out of frustration with the senseless violence around him. Trust me when I tell you that this one is different and well worth the price!

Ice Cube wrote and stars as Craig in this sequel to Friday, which he also wrote. His nemesis from that film, neighborhood bully Debo (Tommy "Tiny" Lister Jr.), has just escaped from county jail and is out to get revenge. To protect Craig, Craig's father (John Witherspoon) sends his son to stay with his Uncle Elroy (Don "DC" Curry), who won the lottery and bought a house in Rancho Cucamonga. Craig expects the suburbs to be dull, but no sooner has he arrived than conflicts arise: The neighbors are hostile hoods, his cousin's girlfriend is out for blood and child support, and the house is about to be seized because of unpaid taxes. It's up to Craig and his cousin Day-Day (Mike Epps) to solve these problems before the day is over. It's a rambling, loose movie, but a genuinely entertaining one. Ice Cube doesn't write punch lines--though funny lines abound. He writes richly comic characters that speak in virtual arias of bragging, complaining, and scamming. Sure, some of the characters are stereotypes and many of the jokes are about drugs and scatology--but that's been the basis of humor since Plautus and Molière. The rhythmic energy of Ice Cube's dialogue and the easy charisma of his performance make Next Friday thoroughly enjoyable. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars It's a different Friday, Ya'll..........2007-01-03

I love this movie! The first Friday was more about a message and life growing up in the ghetto. The last two Friday movies are straight up comedy and will make you laugh til you on tha flo! Day-Day is Craig's loveable idiot cousin and has some of the best lines in the move - and EVERYBODY beats on this guy. If you were looking for more reality like the first Friday, you may be disappointed - this is more like the lighter side of Barbershop (If you have seen Barbershop go shoot yourself in the foot, fool!). All jokes aside.. see this movie and Friday After Next if you just want to laugh. They can get a little ridiculous, but that's what's it's about! Where's the next after next, Cube?? I can't wait.

4 out of 5 stars Fun ;-).......2006-09-17

I enjoyed each of the Friday series. I reviewed the original way back, and now after re-watching Next Friday, I thought I'd finally get around to reviewing this.
I still think I enjoyed Friday the best, but this is a good follow up. Ice Cube returns as Craig Jones who has a knack for getting into trouble. He goes to stay with family out in Rancho Cucamonga. They've just won the lottery and have this whole new place. While Chris Tucker isn't in here this time, we still get the hilarious John Witherspoon. He's fantastic. I only give this four stars because it goes a little flat during the second half, but it's still good overall. The cousin Day-Day is probably the funniest, but if you are a fan of the original, then you have got to see this. I loved it.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first.......2006-01-20

...but a decent sequel. (But hey? It's not often that the sequel is better than the prequel.) I was mad because alot of questions were not answered and the plot was not all that good. I wanted Craig (Ice Cube) to hook up with that girl next door. All she does is have a short convo with her and at the end she blows a kiss and thats the end. I believe thats pointless for Craig's Pops (Jon Witherspoon)drops him off in Rancho Cucamonga (I don't think I spelled it right) then turns around and picks him up. Its a funny movie, but not as good as the first though.

5 out of 5 stars Better than FRIDAY.......2005-10-09

I thought Next Friday was way better than the original....... The first movie was really slow in the beginning.......so slow that I fell asleep. As soon as you pop this movie in, you'll be laughing from beginning to end........ Mike Epps is hilarious as Day-Day, Craigs cousin, and Craigs father has some pretty funny lines in this one........ Rent it, you won't be sorry.......

1 out of 5 stars A Huge Disappointment.......2005-09-26

Like most people, I loved the original Friday - a true classic. I had heard that this one wasn't as good, so I rented a copy just to check it out for myself.

This movie is straight-up garbage. Mike Epps can't carry Chris Tucker's jock. What a waste of what could have been a very good movie series.

Stick with the original; don't waste your time or money on this one.

This ambitious 1995 film by John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood) doesn't quite succeed at painting the illuminating, collective portrait of college life in the '90s that the director seeks. But Singleton does do a fine job of defining some conflicting impulses for young people on the cusp of adulthood, particularly the desire to broaden horizons on the one hand and circle the wagons with like-minded allies on the other. Students in the film's Columbus University divide themselves along lines of race, sexual preferences, ideology, and, most dangerously, levels of paranoia. Among the fine cast is Michael Rapaport, who portrays a loner drawn to a local community of neo-Nazis. His resultant problems with the school's African-Americans takes over the story at the expense of other, parallel dramas, but Singleton's insights into race hatred on campus--a microcosm of the surrounding culture--is not to be dismissed. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars My 2nd Favorite Movie.......2007-05-24

I'm surprised I hadn't reviewed this movie long ago, especially considering this has been my favorite movie for almost a decade. John Singleton expertly weaves a tale of characters of various races in a tragic situation. You have the white frat guys, the black hip hop headz, the black intellectuals, the nerdish crew, the hippies, the slackers, and the professionals all on one campus. Although various races are intermingled within this movie, the concentration of this film is on black and white, specifically racism that a black man may face on a predominantly white college campus. Being that I dealt with the same thing at the first college I went to, most of these scenes were all too familiar for me, minus the KKK scenes (which I could never prove). I appreciate Singleton for presenting movies from a black man's perspective in an educational environment, especially considering it's so rare, and telling of the struggles that Malik (Omar Epp's character) goes through. From beginning to end, I loved this movie. My favorite scene was when Ice Cube found the Nazis upstairs by the pop machines. I also appreciate Ice Cube's lectures explaining that just because you won the fight does not mean you won the full battle. Right on.

5 out of 5 stars A+.......2007-05-07

Its kind of obvious that this movie scares you s***less because your comments reveal your fear. The premise about a freshman track star that encounters racism on a college campus was a good concept and everybody (Omar Epps, Ice Cube, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Rappaport even Tyra Banks)except for Busta Rhymes(everytime I saw him I had to laugh. He's so out of place on here) fit in the movie perfectly. Its unfortunate that most moviegoers are reality dodging cowards like these reviewers that rated it poorly. I saw it as a movie where a brother overcomes adversity(rascism, his own ignorance of his surroundings, a stern professor and losing his girlfriend to racial violence)and becomes successful. You bashed it for obvious reasons(reality). Racism is something you cant dodge like reality so stick to your asinine comedies and your boring energy draining dramas and leave the reviewing to the experts!

2 out of 5 stars Good Concept Horrible Execution.......2007-03-23

There are great lesson in this movie but they are overshadowed by the cartoonish stereotypes used to try and lead the viewer by the hand through all of the mental obstacles. The movie never lets you think about anything because it all so heavy handed and blatent.

5 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this........2007-03-16

Ice Cube has turned his frown upside down with the family-friendly screwball road movie Are We There Yet? We know the actor/rapper can use his trademark scowl to be funny (the Friday and Barbershop series), or to be mean (Boyz in the Hood)--but can he use it to melt kids' hearts? That's the question Are We There Yet? answers with a resounding yes for youngsters in the audience (which will be the lions' share), but it'll probably be an emphatic shrug for the grownups. The contrived plot has Cube playing a wannabe-player (as in ladies' man) and ex-player (as in washed-up minor league baseball star) who now owns a sports memorabilia business. His partner, played by Jay Mohr is just a throwaway, as is the talented Nia Long, the single mom that Cube sets his blinged-out sights on. To try to get in her good graces, he offers to transport her two bratty kids in his pride-and-joy Lincoln Navigator for a joy ride to a distant city where she's attending an emergency business meeting so they can have a New Year's Eve celebration together. This kiddies version of Road Trip and Planes, Trains and Automobiles has its cute moments, but plenty more gross-out moments which will please the kids no end, especially as the Navigator gets more and more trashed. Suffice it to say they all learn about each others' good sides and hearts are suitably melted all around--until after the credits roll, then you'll probably forget about the whole thing.--Ted Fry

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars It's an okay movie.......2007-05-12

Not a bad movie. Not a great movie, but not bad either.

2 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2007-05-07

We saw the move, "Are We There Yet?" in the theater and really enjoyed it, so we decided to purchase this DVD. It would be a good movie for kids if not for the swearing and bad attitudes of the children in the movie. We probabbly will not watch the DVD again (at least not with kids).

3 out of 5 stars Family Friendly Fun.......2007-04-12

There is nothing great in this film, but it does have its moments and is pleasing entertainment. Ice Cube believably loses his bad-boy image, Nia Long is always both pleasing to watch and believable in this limited role, and the child actors are cute, but they always look like they are acting. These same two kids again play brother and sister later with Eddie Murphy in Disney's "The Haunted Mansion."

The script is cliche-ridden and predictable, and the direction is pedestrian at best; however, the film is also enjoyable in spite of these flaws. We get a typical guy all hot for a woman whom he discovers later has kids that are resentful of anyone trying to take their father's place. This "road" story has Ice Cube, hoping to get in the good graces of the very hot Nia Long, take the kids to see her in Vancouver, Canada where she is working because her lame ex-husband has bailed out on having the kids (again . . . ). The trio start off hating each other, but end up feeling like a family before all is said and done.

Some good moments: the slow, painful distruction of Cube's Lincoln Navigator, the wacko deer, and the good-intentioned, but easily fooled truck driver. Again, this is harmless family fun entertainment even with it's "been there, done that" feel.

1 out of 5 stars mind-numbingly awful.......2007-04-01

In some sort of alternate universe where Ice Cube does ridiculously lame hack family feel good movies comes "Are We There Yet", possibly the worst movie to come out of 2005. The acting, plot, and overall concept is just so god-awful, a better title would've been "Please, Please God, is it Done Yet?"

4 out of 5 stars *ICE CUBE* does it again.......2007-03-27

I really enjoyed the movie. I think that it is a movie that the whole family can enjoy. If you haven't seen it yet, you should. Definitly watch it with the kids.

--Tom Keogh

2 out of 5 stars Welcome to High-Concept Hell.......2007-05-02

Seemingly-random people are trapped in a giant, deadly Rubik's cube!

There, you have the entire movie, sadly. This is one of those films where all the interesting parts are right up-front, and the actual film is filled with stock characters, predictable plot points, cliched interactions and juvenile conspiracy theories. We're lead to believe that the people were chosen deliberately, yet some characters seem utterly useless, added only to create artificial drama. The interactions are not believable, the climax an insulting cop-out, and while the lack of explanation seems to work for awhile, soon it fails as suspense and you just stop caring.

It's not terrible, and you can admire how they were able to stretch out a minuscule budget. The acting is tolerable, though not good enough to transcend the shallow stereotypes they had to work with. Ultimately, no matter how compelling the concept, you spend the entire time waiting for an actual movie to show up, and it never does.

4 out of 5 stars Loved it, but all my friends hated it.......2007-03-02

To be certain, this movie is not everyone's cup of tea, however I enjoyed it enough to buy it. It is at its heart a very well-written character study, with a bit of a sci-fi/1984 twist to it. The characters all awake to find themselves inexplicably trapped in a mysterious cube-shaped prison, and the interractions among them as the situation becomes more and more desperate are fascinating. This movie never did garner much attention, but it was one of Robert Ebert's video picks of the week, and it is well worth seeing.

Ice Cube (Barbershop) uses his relaxed, raffish charm to glide through the third movie in his Friday series. As Craig (Cube) and Day-Day (Mike Epps) sleep in the wee hours of Christmas Eve, a burglar dressed like Santa Claus breaks in and steals their presents and rent. Thus begins a classically bad day full of unsympathetic family members, obnoxious neighbors, squealing pimps, pot smoking, and sexy babes. No one's going to win any awards for this sloppy installment, loaded with preening stereotypes and half-hearted low humor; Cube generally plays straight man and lets the rest of the cast screech, yowl, and contort their faces, their performances as ornate and ritualized as a Japanese Noh play. But if you're a fan, Friday After Next will give you a modest dose of Cube's goofy humor. John Witherspoon and Don "D.C." Curry return as Craig's eternally disgruntled father and uncle. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Sequel. Craig and Day-Day move back into the hood, where they find jobs as security guards at a strip mall. Hijinks ensue on their first day on the job, which happens to be Christmas Eve.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas Joy.......2006-11-01

This movie is too funny, the scene at the abc store and the "sisters". That's all I'm going to say this is a must have in your personal collection it's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars SO GOOD, IT'LL MAKE YA' WANTA SLAP YO' MOMMA!.......2005-11-13

"Tastes so good, it'll make you want to slap your momma"!! This is just one the hilarious quotes from "Friday After Next". This is one seriously funny movie. If you don't just bust-up with laughter, then you are probably already dead. Ice Cube and his buddy Mike Epps deliver one Hell of a good Christmas themed comedy. This time around, Ice Cube plays his role to the max, and manages to showcase the "Craig" character in ways not shown in the two previous "Friday" films. Craigs entire family are here, engaged in antics wild and crazy enough to make anyone roll with laughter. The whole "Bro's Bar-B-Q" scene alone, makes this a film not to miss. I watched this film again, while visiting friends in the Philippines. And the Filipinos laughed eved harder than my American friends did! It seems that Ice cube's movies are a big hit all over the world. So I say get yourself a copy of "Friday After Next", and invite some friends over to watch it. This is one movie worth adding to your comedy film collection. Ice Cube always delivers, and this time, he really takes care of business.

5 out of 5 stars The second best alternative Christmas classic since A Christmas Story.......2005-09-08

Having no idea this was a Christmas movie when we rented it, I have a new tradition to pop this and Bad Santa in every Christmas Eve. For a white girl from the suburbs, you can't get much more alternative than this!

Craig and DayDay are living in an apartment a California ghetto. THey endure the typical trials and tribulations of single living - paying the rent on time, working, etc. - but put the urban spin on everything. THeir house is broken into by Santa, their landlady (with a moustache problem that really bothers me) is harrassing them, and her enourmous son has just been released from prison and wants a piece of them. At their jobs at the strip mall we meet an entire separate cast with their family barbeque restaurant ("Bring your big ass down here! Tastes so good, make you wanna slap yo mamma!"), the Holy Moly Donut Shop, and the Pimps n' Hos store. Hilarity unfolds in drug humor, physical comedy, and innuendo.

The pimp at the Pimps n' Hos shop stole the show once he was introduced. The cute little man with the Napoleonic Complex who wants to be a tough guy. It's a scream! With the pink limos, skanks, and urban mentality, this is one rip roaring good time. All I want for Christmas is two fat bitches who smell like cheeseburgers, a bag of weed, and this DVD!

4 out of 5 stars Better than Next Friday, but not the first........2005-09-01

For the second straight time, Mike Epps replaces Tucker, but he plays Craig's (Ice Cube) cousin. Don't get me wrong, he's funny. But come on. Thats Chris Tucker. But anyway, this time the two are owing rent money by the nightfall or the landlords diesel son Damon is going to set them straight. One thing about him. He should try setting himself straight first. The two are security guards in a mini mall and Day-Day (Epps) is taking his job a little too seriously. Until finally they catch two people stealing at the store next door to they're fathers barbeque, they invite the pimp owner to come to they're Christmas Party that night. Unfortunately for him, he runs into Damon in the bathroom and the rest is just crazy. Many funny parts, but still think it could've been funnier with Tucker.

4 out of 5 stars YYYYEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHH BOY!.......2005-07-10

This is what I was waitin for. It wasn't better than the first one but it put the second to shame. The story was funny to me. A black santa robbin the neighboorhood, that s*** is crazy. The pimp had me laughin half to death son. And pinky is as crazy as ever. This could'nt match the greatness of one. But its still a good movie. The soundtrack was trash though and there where a couple of songs in the movie that wasn't on the soundtrack, that's some bs.

Ice Cube cowrote, produced, and stars in this action caper. Bucum (Cube) is a bounty hunter (get it?) with dreams of big money. Reggie (Mike Epps) is a small-time grifter who also has dreams of big money and is at the top of Bucum's list to boot. Yep, you guessed it: tough guy/funny guy buddy flick. All About the Benjamins is pretty much a by-the-numbers piece of work. There's plenty of macho posturing, gunfire, big-ticket items exploding, and curse words inserted into the script in lieu of actual punch lines. The plot has holes big enough to drive a locomotive through, but then again the plot isn't really the point. Epps's attempts at wacky comedy wear thin early on, but Ice Cube does a fine job, and together they do make quite a few moments hit. Best recommended for when you want turn-your-brain-off excitement. --Ali Davis

Description

Ice Cube and Mike Epps are the driving force of this high style, high impact, action/comedy. One's a top dog bounty hunter, the other a two-bit hustler. Add to the mix a botched diamond heist, a lost sinning lottery ticket, and one thing becomes clear...that it's All About the Benjamins.

5 out of 5 stars Too Funny.......2007-01-20

I can say this is one of my Favorite Ice Cube Movie. It is too funny! Mike Epps is hilarious!

2 out of 5 stars Trite.......2006-04-02

The Fridays gang steals some diamonds. Mike Epps is not Chris Tucker no matter how hard he tries to be. His constant whinning is enough to ride my last nerve. Plus, everything about the movie is just campy and just wholly unbelieveable that I don't know where to begin. Whatever you do don't buy or rent this garbage-wait to catch it on TBS or something.

5 out of 5 stars All About the Benjamins.......2005-09-13

All about THE Benjamins is a funny @$$ movie.Mike Epps is funny. The polt of the movie is very interesting and funny. I recomend that you watch it soon if you have not seen it yet.
:)

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining!.......2005-01-22

I enjoyed this film about a bounty hunter (Ice T) who chases a con man who keeps eluding him. When the con man wins the mega lottery and then loses his ticket (in the boat of a nasty villian) he tries to enlist the aid of Ice T to get it back. Unfortunately for him, Ice T does not believe him about the ticket and is not only interested in collecting the bounty for the con man and also recovering several million in diamonds that a bad guy has.

Eventually, Ice T starts to believe the con man and they somewhat work together but Ice T maintains a short leash on him until he can beat the villian and get the diamonds.

There are some really hilarious scenes and both Ice T and the con man put in excellent performances.

An overlooked gem that is as good as any of the Lethal Weapon films!

4 out of 5 stars It's entertaining and fun........2004-05-29

Fun movie to watch. It's even ok to watch over again. I do have a question though. How in the world did Reggie survive all of the shots into the van? Was he was able to anchor himself to the top of the van while the Bucum was shooting?
