Italians In Space.......2007-04-16
Now and then you encounter a film so tiresome that the thought reviewing it is every bit as tiresome as the film itself. Such is the case with ASSIGNMENT: OUTER SPACE, also known as SPACE MEN, a 1960 Italian flick.
The story is unimpressive. A reporter (Rik Van Nutter) is assigned to cover the goings-on aboard a space station--and happens to arrive just in time for a nuclear space ship to go out of control and threaten the earth and everyone on it. So they all blast off for Mars, and then they blast off for Venus, and then they blast off for the runaway space ship. There is a romantic subplot and more uninspired cliffhangers than a Pearl White serial.
The special effects aren't, the actors are stiff, and there are numerous insults to audience intelligence along the way. The absolute best thing I can say for this movie is that I've seen worse dubbing jobs--and now and then it does have an idea that seems interesting, although in truth nothing much comes of it. Unless you are a die-hard fan of lousy 1960s sci-fi, give this one a miss.

ALPHA DVD VERSION.......2006-11-27
NOT BAD 1960 ITALIAN SPACE OPUS ABOUT ANNOYING REPORTER WHO SAVES THE EARTH. GOOD SPECIAL EFFECTS (FOR THE TIME) & AN INTERESTING CAST, ESPECIALLY ARCHIE SAVAGE AS AL WHO SACRIFICES HIS LIFE SO STAR RIK VON NUTTER (THE FIRST ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER) CAN BECOME THE HERO AND GET THE GIRL!!! THIS IS THE SPACE FILM WHERE EVERYONE WEARS THE STEVE CANYON FLIGHT HELMETS!!!
THE ALPHA DVD IS CLEAR & WATCHABLE, NOT HAMPERED WITH ANNOYING CUTS/SPLICES/JUMPS...HOWEVER, THE COLOR IS SO FADED THE FILM APPEARS TO BE SHOT IN SEPIA-TONE. THIS IS ONE FILM A COMPANY LIKE IMAGE NEEDS TO RELEASE IN WIDESCREEN...PLEASE!!!
Alpha Two does not answer.......2006-10-10
A reporter on a routine mission in the 21st century. Finds he is wrapped up in a mystery that will take him from nervous intruder to a heroic mission. On the way reporter Ray Peterson (IZ41) and botanist, co-pilot and all around cutie Lucy (Y13) find time to fall in love.
In the process George the Commander (David Montresor) learns to be human and give a few rousing speeches about how man carries his nature to space with himself. Al (X15) (Archie Savage) find an opportunity to sacrifice for man kind and be remembered "Alas poor Al"
Turns out that humanity itself is being threatened. Will this crew be able to get along and deter the threat or is destiny too strong?
The mechanics to tell the story are the use of models, old pilot helpmates and Italian 1961 concept of space fatuous. The analog interments add that space feel.
Interesting film, horrible transfer.......2006-05-18
I'm always amused by a friend who claims to have found great deals on old movies on DVD, only to be repeatedly burned by another cheap hack job by companies like Goodtimes or (in this case) Alpha Video. So it was with some trepidation I approached this one...
I was already familiar with the film, having long ago purchased a VHS copy from a slightly-more reputable company than those mentioned above. But after seeing this washed-out mess, with its numerous missing frames and audio dropouts, I might as well have used my DVD recorder to copy my VHS. The ONLY thing to recommend this disc over my tape is the inclusion of a trailer, which is in itself an oddity for Alpha. It's nice to have, but it's actually, unbelievably, in worse condition than the film.
ASSIGNMENT: OUTER SPACE itself is a pretty good little Italian space opera. As a kid watching these kinds of films on late-nite television, I always thrilled at seeing outer space scenes, spaceships, astronauts floating around, etc. And the film certainly delivers on those. And there is a real plot in there, too. Much has been said about how irritating Rik Von Nutter's reporter character is. But truthfully, these sorts of films are rarely a showcase for great acting. I found most of the characters acceptable, if unremarkable. And the reporter in space idea was probably pretty fresh in 1961.
Until a better transfer pops up, I'd recommend this disc only for sci-fi completists.
For a first try, color me impressed.......2006-05-10
This puppy before you is the very first Italian sci-fi flick, from way back in 1960. As my regular readers are aware...big shout out to both of 'em har-d-har-harr...Tom Danger has found his purpose in life. Yes, God Himself has set me about watching every oddball film made in the two decades prior to my arrival on this whirling orb of insanity. Well, maybe it was George Burns. I was pretty drunk. But He let Lenny Bruce pass the pearly gates, according to Larry Flynt, so who am I to argue? Besides, I'm not Vince McMahon. He might in fact smite me.
Anyhow, AOS concerns a reporter assigned to bring back a story from the cosmos. He disembarks into a hostile space station only to find the grandaddy of all journalistic scoops...the impending destruction of the Earth. The cosmonauts remind me of the Michelin Man in their suits. One explosion was filmed on a backlot with a car in the frame. Careless, Paisan. A few love slaps across your cheek. Otherwise, the effects are quite good for the era, and the acting surprisingly superb. The underlying message about space and technology sapping the humanity from men, turning them to machines, is needed today in our internet-based society more than ever. The cosmonauts have no names, just numbers. They don't even know what Christmas is. The print is so faded that the picture could be mistaken for black and white, but that's okay. The Tree Line 50 Sci-Fi Classics contains AOS, Mesa of Lost Women, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, Teeangers from Outer Space and many more. Like the Queen of Hearts, always your best bet.

An unexpected pleasure.......2006-09-24
When I read the description, and the film's title, I was expecting some
pretty cheesy 80's TV treacle. However, as a sucker for movies that
involve NASA in some regard, particularly those that deal with the
Apollo Program, I had to give it a try.
I was very surprised, then, to find myself being drawn into it and
caring about the characters. It was much better than I had expected,
and the performances were quite solid. Sheen and Foxworth were very
good, Slater was reasonably believable, and Abraham stole his scenes.
The female characters were sympathetic and believable. I was also
surprised how front and center Apollo was - it didn't just serve as a
disposable backdrop for the drama. All in all Beyond the Stars was well
worth the viewing, but I agree that the sci-fi ending did cheapen the
drama slightly. And the title - whew - they could have done better than
that!
I have to chuckle, however, at a description I read of Slater's
character being a "troubled" teenager. Ha! Most people should be so
lucky to have a kid that respects his parents, wants to follow in his
dad's footsteps and study science and math, and plans to go to MIT.
Yeah - that kid's a real disaster.
Anyway, a few of the technical space details were off (particularly
during the Huntsville trip), and the music was pretty dated, but those
are mostly nits. Overall this was a reasonably intelligent and mature
drama with a strong Apollo background - and an unexpected pleasure.
not the Martin Sheen/Christian Slater movie.......2005-03-03
Looking at a larger view of the cover as shown in the listing, I am certain that this is not the movie I was looking for or described in the other review of the vhs. Although it was not easy to read, the main title was not repeated in the 4 smaller titles. Although all one really has to do is look at the cover to know this isn't the Martin Sheen/Christian Slater movie, I mean really, a sexy siren with a blaster on the cover of a story about friendship and wonder. Definitely not a match.
A Journey For Anyone Who Dares To Dream.......2000-04-08
Everyone who has walked the face of this earth has at one time in his or her life, dreamed of becoming an extraordinary person. It is in our nature to dream of growing into something unique and beautiful. The journey of life is and will never be an easy voyage. Some will fall...and some will succeed; It's up to the individual to turn that dream into a reality. In this movie BEYOND THE STARS, Eric (Christian Slater) has his dream in sight and is willing to do anything to one day accomplish it. Eric wants to walk among the stars and touch the face of the moon. When he is sent to his father's house in Ceder Bay Oregon for shooting a model rocket through a school window; He realizes that an ex-astronaut (Martin Sheen) is living in the same town as his father. To Eric this man is a legend, someone who has been where he one day wants to go. Eric meets a beautiful girl who just so happens to know this living hero. But Paul Andrews (The Astronaut), is nothing but; He is now a drunk, who wants to be left alone and never wants to talk about his time away from our home. Eric is severly hurt but eventually decides to do what ever it takes to be Paul's friend. Eric gets his break when Mr. Andrews offers him to help in constructing a grand greenhouse. Knowing that he won't get any money, Eric still agrees to help him. And through this decision they grow as true friends and there friendship eventually brings Eric and his father closer than they've ever been before. What Eric doesn't know is that some years earlier on Paul's last mission to the moon; He stumbled upon something magical buried within a crater. And as he was attempting to uncover the ancient relic a heavy cloud of radiation caught up with him, taking a piece of his life as it passed by. Paul knew that he was poisoned and that it was too late to escape the wrath of the deadly cloud; So he ordered his men to safely lock the hatch to the pod. They had to set helplessly, knowing that through the passage of many years the radiation would eventually take the rest of him. Paul decided in the dark of the lunar surface that the relic would be his and that no one would ever find out - that is, until Eric comes along. This story is so inspiring. It asks so many important questions and shows us that friendship is an important part of life; Without it this world would be an empty place. This movie in a way models our own life - We all dream - We all want our privacy - And we all question our own existence. BEYOND THE STARS is a film that will forever live within the hearts of every dreamer. It has shown me to never let go of a dream - And to never deny friendship - Both are extremely powerful and vital to every human being. So friend, if you are down and need to be lifted up beyond the stars - Find this movie, or buy it whenever it is re-released.

Wouldn't Be Worth It Even At Half The Price.......2007-05-07
This double-sided DVD offers four films: COSMOS--WAR OF THE PLANETS; ASSIGNMENT: OUTER SPACE; VOYAGE TO THE PREHISTORIC PLANET; and WARNING FROM SPACE. And not a one of them is worth the cost of shipping, much less the expense of purchase.
Released in the United States in 1979, COSMOS--WAR OF THE PLANETS is a badly dubbed Italian film that has had as many name changes as a starlet in search of a career--but it hardly matters, because a weed by any other name still stinks. The plot is so horrifically disjointed that it more or less defies description; suffice to say that it involves a planet gone bad, crazy computers, and lots of Italians in skin-tight caps. Although the transfer is reasonably good, it is actually the worst of the four films offered, and that is saying a great deal indeed.
Like COSMOS, ASSIGNMENT: OUTER SPACE is a badly dubbed Italian flick; unlike COSMOS, ASSIGNMENT: OUTER SPACE isn't quite so horrendously bad. Released in the early 1960s, this time the story concerns a satelite gone bad, and while it's not going to win any prizes it does occasionally have an interesting idea or two--not that any of them go anywhere special. The transfer is pretty bad as well.
VOYAGE TO THE PREHISTORIC PLANET began life as a Russian movie so bad that not even the Soviets would watch it. At some point in the 1960s, drive-in dreck master Roger Corman came across it, edited it, dubbed it, and then sweet-talked Basil Rathbone and Faith Domergue into filming a few scenes that he hoped would give the whole thing some coherence. It didn't. There are two interesting things about this movie: Faith's beehive hairdo, which completely defies description, and the robot, which is essentially a riff on Robbie from FORBIDDEN PLANET but with less personality and really big toenails. And the transfer is so awful you might well come away from it with a migraine.
As for WARNING FROM SPACE... well, it has to do with starfish-shaped creatures who descend on Japan to tell the world that we're about to have a collision with a rogue planet. No one believes them, of course, until the planet is actually visible to the naked eye. Throw in two very odd musical numbers (one of which looks like Ricky Ricardo and Carmen Miranda collided somewhere over Tokyo), plot devices that are an insult to the intelligence of a five year old, and lots of bad acting, and you'll find this 1956 flick drudgery in its purest form. And dare I say it? The transfer is even worse than VOYAGE TO THE PREHISTORIC PLANET.
This is the sort of thing you come across in the bargain-bin at your local superstore--but frankly it doesn't matter how cheap it is, it isn't worth it. Now and then a bad film is so awful that it becomes funny, but that isn't the case here. The warning from this particular space is to avoid the thing like the plague.
GFT, Amazon Reviewer
Buy at WalMart for $1.00.......2006-10-22
These movies are so bad, they are fun to watch. Go ahead and spend the money! Had more fun then some of the overhyped Sci-Fi movies that cost me 80 times as much. (I look at it as if I spent a quarter a movie.
Hilariously cheesy collection of films all on one DVD.......2006-06-06
The Sci-Fi Invasion is a very inexpensive way to obtain four obscure, low-budget foreign films, all on one DVD. The DVD disc is region free, meaning it should play on any DVD player, even PAL and NTSC. Of course, I live in America, so I have a Region 1 NTSC player, and this disc works just fine. The packaging simply says "This DVD is compatible with all DVD players" with no mention of regions or formats. Unfortunately the DVD don't have a scene selection feature, but you can skip to whatever film you wish to see.
Are you sick of all those overproduced, slick and hyped Hollywood films? Had enough of Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T.? Think George Lucas and Steven Spielberg are overrated? Want some cheesy low-budget fun that should have been destined to be ridiculed on Mystery Science Theater 3000? Then you come to the right place with The Sci-Fi Invasion, which packs four films on to one DVD, Cosmos: War of the Planets (apparently released in Italy in 1977, but not in America until 1978), Assignment: Outer Space (1960), Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet (1965), and Warning From Space (1956). Not sure where these films came from, other than Cosmos: War of the Planets from Italy and Warning From Space, which was Japanese. The first film, Cosmos: War of the Planets had me completely laughing. This movie looks so horribly dated even for 1977 standards. Here you get treated with synthesizer renditions of classical music throughout the film (as well as cheesy synthesizer sound effects) with really bad costumes, and a spaceship whose interior looks like the instrument panels of the TARDIS from Doctor Who and the Starship Enterprise, and the crew wearing uniforms with a triangle-shaped insignia that look like it was stolen from Star Trek. The crew of this spaceship explores a desolate planet and gets attacked by an alien that looks more like a truck than any alien you can think of. If it weren't for the very '70s sounding synthesizer music, this could easily pass for a real bad '50s sci-fi, with special effects that look more '50s than '70s. What's even more hilarious, as the planet they were exploring disintegrates, the producers of this film starts using stock footage of volcanoes erupting and even footage of a nuclear bomb test explosion. The acting, costumes, the computers and instrument panels are simply out of this world! This film has got to be seen to be believed.
Next one is Assignment: Outer Space. The acting is more believable here, but because the movie is from 1960, expect '50s type of special effects, with flames coming out of a rocket that look like Bunsen burners. I was really laughing at the hilarious inaccuracies of this film. Especially in regards to landing on Venus. I am certain that even back in 1960, astronomers, and the public in general, knew that Venus consists of heavy amounts of carbon dioxide and extremely thick clouds, and tempuratures around 800 degrees Fahrenheit, but on this film, they depict Venus to be as free of clouds as the moon. In real life, even if astronauts could visit other planets (which we still can't to this day), no one would dare attempt to land on Venus because the climate and the pressure is way too great, and only able to send unmanned space probes there.
Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet is another one of those flicks where astronauts embark on voyage to Venus, with nothing but inaccuracies. No mention that Venus is 800 degrees with thick clouds with virtually zero visibility. The skies are clear, but looking more like that on Earth. And there's monsters to be found too. There's also a robot, everytime it talks, it sounds like the instrument panel of the Starship Enterprise, but then the original Star Trek series did recycle sounds used on other sci-fi films and television for their sound effects at the time. Let's not forget that Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet did come out in 1965, a year before Star Trek.
Warning From Space, the Japanese flick, starts off deceiving you that this was going to be another alien invasion flick (with starfish-like aliens with one eye), it ends up being more of a Japanese version of When Worlds Collide (1951), as the aliens warn the people of Earth of an oncoming planet that's about to collide. The acting is cheesy and the overdubbing into English leaves a lot to be desired, but it's no more worse than the monster flicks that came from that country around the same time like Godzilla.
These films will guarantee to get you laughing at how hilariously bad films can get. Not recommended for those who want a professional Hollywood production on the scale of Lucas or Spielberg, but for those who get a kick off low-budget B-films.
