Description
A deranged hunter massacres the female clients at a local health spa, but the two police detectives assigned to investigate, Sully (ERIC ROBERTS) and Wyznowski (JOHN RHYS-DAVIES), are baffled to find that all the victims have been shot either through the eye or the ear, yet no bullets can be found on their corpses. To complicate matters, some of the victims' bodies have disappeared completely. When Sully and Wyznowski question the lone survivor of the massacre, they learn that Warden (ARNOLD VOSLOO), a mysterious stranger with super-human abilities, also seems to be conducting an investigation.

As the two detectives attempt to track down the illusive Warden, the hunter kills again, this time displaying his own super-human abilities, and leading Sully and Wyznowski to realize that their investigation has only just scratched the surface of a much bigger problem: A secret war is being waged between two alien species, and Earth has become their battleground.

Like any IMAX movie, Coral Reef Adventure is so vivid, vast, and colorful that you can't help but be astonished by its visual splendor. But this undersea exploration has a deeper, more serious agenda as well, warning its viewers that the natural magnificence of the world's most impressive coral reefs is, in most cases, a mere 30 years away from extinction due to the devastating effects of global (and oceanic) warming. Whether or not that timeframe is accurate (and there's not enough solid science presented here to prove it either way), it's tragically obvious that we are in the process of losing entire ecosystems that cannot be replaced, and when you witness these awesome coral reefs in their still-thriving vitality, you experience a sense of urgent responsibility toward our stewardship of planet Earth. By showing us the commitment and potentially life-threatening work of reef explorers and world-class undersea cinematographers Howard and Michele Hall, the film provides an all-access pass to some of the most exotic, playful, and dangerous creatures in the ocean, presented with the kind of intense, almost three-dimensional clarity that can only be achieved in the IMAX format. And while the giant-screen awesomeness of IMAX is lost in translation to DVD, Coral Reef Adventure offers the best-to-date use (on disc 2 of this two-disc set) of High Definition DVD-ROM formatting. For PC users equipped with Windows XP and Windows Media Player 9 series (or later) software, the amazing images in Coral Reef Adventure achieve an almost life-like resolution. The ultimate conclusion remains: If we don't do something to protect these delicate, endangered wonders of nature, we will lose a part of ourselves. --Jeff Shannon

2 out of 5 stars Coral Reef.......2007-06-07

I was very disappointed with this video. I was looking forward to seeing footage of coral reefs on the ocean floor, but what they gave was an ecological view of what happens when "man" doesn't take care of what is there. I'm always looking for good educational videos. If I had been teaching ecology, that would be one thing, but I was looking for live footage of coral reefs.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent view.......2007-05-24

This film is as absolute delight from start to finish. It is basically eye candy and education thrown together into one. The spectacular views of the underwater world are simply breathtaking. What else can I say? Superb!

4 out of 5 stars Very Satisfied.......2007-05-23

We are very happy with the video. The graphics and music is awesome! I found it very entertaining as well as educational. Thank you.

4 out of 5 stars 4 of 5 due to used DRM.......2007-04-10

This movie is great and the picture is awesome and I bought it due to the 2nd disc in HD (in WMVHD). Picture is so crisp and simply beautiful. You'll face problems if you would like to wath the HD content on your Mac - due to the fact that main movie is protected with DRM and it could run only from Windows.

5 out of 5 stars HD.......2007-04-05

I purchased this DVD for the 1080 and 720 resolutions through Windows Media player to shoot through my projector. The picture is awesome in HD. It does take a newer processor to run it though. My XP 2600+ chip had problems doing the 1080, but my 3800+ dual core with 2mb of PC 800 RAM ran it flawlessly. I plan to purchase more IMAX videos that include the HD disc. Until the Blue Ray and HD ROM's come down in price, this is a really good option for running/seeing a HD image.

The natural beauties of Florida find some young champions in Hoot, based on the young adult novel by satirical crime writer Carl Hiaasen. While trying to resist being bullied on the school bus, Roy (Logan Lerman, Jack & Bobby) becomes intrigued by a barefoot boy running frantically along the sidewalk. As he investigates, Roy learns that a nearby construction site is a habitat for a protected species of burrowing owl and that a tough girl at his school named Beatrice (Brie Larson, Sleepover) has some connection with the barefoot boy, who has some connection with vandalism at the construction site. Hoot has been attacked by conservative critics for promoting eco-terrorism--a charge most viewers may find overheated--but the movie's real weakness isn't political but artistic; the clumsy dialogue barely sounds like human speech and the plot takes some hard-to-believe turns. At one point, as part of protecting the burrowing owls and their chicks, a kid releases poisonous cottonmouth snakes onto the construction site; apparently his ecological knowledge doesn't include the feeding habits of these snakes, which eat birds. The colorful scenery and the affable presence of Luke Wilson (Bottle Rocket, Old School) keep the movie alive. Also featuring Tim Blake Nelson (O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Holes) and singer Jimmy Buffett, whose tropical honky-tonk bubbles up all over the soundtrack. --Bret Fetzer

Description

From Walden Media (The Chronicles of Narnia franchise) and based on the best-selling book, Hoot is a classic story that is fun for all ages. When a boy and his classmates realize that a population of endangered, burrowing owls is threatened by new construction, the kids decide to take on crooked politicians and bumbling cops in the hope of saving their new friends.

4 out of 5 stars hoot.......2007-05-16

fun movie for kids and adults. humorous, educational, kids get to triumph over environmental trashers, appealing leads. a relief to find an intelligent movie we can enjoy together that is neither insipid nor loaded with the usual bad language, nudity, violence. hope more of carl hiaasen's books go the movie route.

4 out of 5 stars Kiddie Conservation.......2007-04-28

"Hoot" tells the story of three unlikely heroes, Roy, Bea, and Mullet Fingers (Logan Lerman, Brie Larson, and Cody Linley, respectively), who attempt to thwart the construction of a new pancake house in Florida on land that is inhabited by federally-protected burrowing owls. Young Roy has just moved to Florida with his family from Montana. As is with most tween-aged tales, he's an outcast who gets bullied, picked on, etc. Through a series of funny events he becomes good friends with the bully who bullies bullies, Beatrice, and her tree-hugging brother, Mullet Fingers. Up until the point where the three begin working together, Mullet Fingers has done the bulk of the dirty work at the jobsite by sabotaging contractor Curly's (Tim Blake Nelson) survey stakes, releasing cottonmouths on the property, and a few other things. When Roy enters the picture, evidence is uncovered that will shut down the construction completely. Of course, the main problem is that they are just three kids. Who'll listen to them?

As the story rolls along we get to meet "buffoon-in-blue" Delinko (gamely played by Luke Wilson) and Roy's cool science teacher, Mr. Ryan (Jimmy Buffett). Robert Wagner shows up in a brief but funny role as the city mayor. The cameras also give us a healthy dose of Florida's beautiful beaches and the swamp and her creatures that Mullet Fingers loves so much.

Some have stated that this movie promotes eco-terrorism and they do have a little bit of an honest gripe. What Mullet Fingers does is illegal, but so is what the pancake house is attempting to do. Both sides are wrong in the matter, but Roy's use of the legal system shows the viewer that stealing dozer seats and tearing out specific pages of a document eventually prove to be empty ventures. In short, eco-terrorism ideals are present, but they are shown to not be the solution to the problem.

Unlike a few other reviewers here, I'm glad that the owls received only a little screen time. This only enhanced the fact that they are endangered and worth protecting.

Overall, the movie does a good job of entertaining the entire family. It is somewhat generic as far as tweener tales go, but it is very likeable as a whole. I think I caught only one or two brief slips of the tongue in the whole movie. There's only a little onscreen violence involving a bully and Roy and some hilarious offscreen violence involving Bea and the same bully. The film has plenty of laughs for all ages and the cast does a pretty good job with their respective roles. Families should have no problems watching this one together.

5 out of 5 stars HOOT IS GREAT FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT.......2007-03-31

I WAS THRILLED TO SEE A MOVIE THAT WAS JUST LIKE READING THE BOOK! IT WAS FUN & LIGHTHEARTED WITH AN UNDERCURRENT OF ENVIRONMENTALISM. A TRULY ENJOYABLE FILM. HATS OFF TO CARL FOR A WONDERFULLY ENTERTAINING FAMILY MOVIE!

5 out of 5 stars A good movie.......2007-03-13

This is a delightful family film. Some youths fight to keep a Pancake house from being built over the nesting site of protected burrowing owls. One of the boys, Mullet, has already had trouble and must hide from sight while still trying to prevent the construction from taking place. There's plenty of humor thrown in with this serious theme. I especially love seeing Jimmy Beffet play a teacher! He did a wonderful acting job.

You wouldn't know it by watching the mostly ridiculous escapades on display in Wild America, but this comedy/adventure for young boys is marginally based on the true story of Marshall, Mark, and Marty Stouffer, three young brothers who successfully pursued their dream of becoming wildlife filmmakers. From their home in the South, the Stouffer boys embark on a cross-country trek to the West, where they hope to get rare footage from inside the dreaded Cave of the Sleeping Bears. Along the way they encounter cute British tourist girls, deadly alligators, a rampaging moose, and an Air Force fighter on a bombing range. In other words, Wild America is about as contrived as it could possibly be and still claim to be based on reality, but it is harmless enough for young viewers with its wholesome message about bravery, hard work, and family togetherness. Jonathan Taylor Thomas (from television's Home Improvement) leads the young cast of adventurers. --Jeff Shannon

Kids love this movie. As an adult I can nit-pick all I want, but the simple truth, is that kids love this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Great adventure.......2007-05-07

I found this movie to be thoroughly entertaining. I loved the spirit of life and nature shared by the experience of the 3 brothers. It was also refreshing to see their hopes and dreams come to life. Well acted and a well told story. Loved the relationship of the parents and children - the support and nurturing by all was very positive. Then you find it is based on a true story and that makes the tale even better. Great movie to watch with your family and friends.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasant surprise.......2007-04-03

My husband and I were trying to keep from dozing off on the couch one Sunday afternoon when we came upon this movie. It wasn't what the local station had promised they would show, but within minutes we were hooked. It quickly became clear that you have to keep your tongue in cheek while watching this. The main character is being fanciful as he tells the story through reminicing. Don't let that bother you. It is a dear, warmly-told story. I plan to get it so I can sit down and see it again.

5 out of 5 stars Wild.......2007-03-21

This is the best movie to watch with a teenager to bring your family together. Laugh, cry & laugh some more! Get it!

5 out of 5 stars Wild America.......2007-03-20

I thought Wild America was the best movie ever!! It was funny and interesting. The movie was really, really cool because it was based on a true story. Every time when it got scarey something funny would come in, like when they were in the cave singing to put the bears back to sleep and at the end of the song they did what their Dad did (farted)!! This is my absolute FAVORITE MOVIE EVER!!!!!!

For such a quiet and understated movie, Loggerheads has a lot of ambition: In addition to being a gay love story, it's also about the push and pull between parents and children, the hairline fractures in a marriage, and the delicate balance of a neighborhood. A troubled woman (Bonnie Hunt, Return to Me) seeks out the child she gave up for adoption; a gay motel owner (Michael Kelly, Dawn of the Dead) takes in a handsome drifter (Kip Pardue, Imaginary Heroes); and the wife (Tess Harper, Tender Mercies) of a preacher (Chris Sarandon, The Princess Bride) frets that a gay couple has moved in across the street. All of their lives will intersect as Loggerheads subtly draws out their secret losses and desires. Maybe too subtly--trying to avoid melodrama, the movie may have avoided some emotionally potent scenes. But the cast is superb throughout, all giving vivid and genuine performances; there's not a false note through the entire film. Also featuring Robin Weigert (Deadwood) and Michael Learned (The Waltons). --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2007-07-04

A rather slow paced movie, which does not take us wherw we want to go, but a truly emotionable film that is finely crafted by a great cast and crew. Up there with my very favourites.

5 out of 5 stars A favorite!.......2007-05-29

I enjoyed this film, a lot more than i orginally thought. In the days after seeing it, i could not stop thinking about it. Loggerheads will remain one of my favorites, up there with "A Beautiful Thing" and "The Line Of Beauty". The sound track is amazing, perfectly suited to te film.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully filmed, emotionally moving.......2007-04-09

What an incredibly moving film - I am an adoptee that searched for her mom, only to find that she had died many years ago. This film is right on in the representations of adoptees and mothers searching - the acting is so true to life and the images have stayed with me. This is one of my absolute favorite films ever - I was moved to tears many times. Incredible film -

5 out of 5 stars So much truth in less than 2 hours.......2007-03-05

I watched this film for a second time to confirm my initial assessment. I found myself in tears each time. As a gay man and an adoptee, I've spent a half century looking for that film, that book, that story expressing the constellation of truth which is my experience, my life. In LOGGERHEADS, I found that truth.

The time line of the story seemed, at first, a not very straight line and the resulting uneasiness is really a part of the truth of an adoption triad. A biological mother never forgets her baby, especially on his/her birthday. An adoptee never forgets his/her biological mother, especially on his/her birthday. And, an adoptive mother never forgets that she shares her adoptive child with another mother some place, especially on the child's birthday. As an adoptee, I've learned personally (and from other adoptees) that even fifty years does not lessen the uneasiness of place I inhabit in life.

Lastly, this film is a tribute to the love of mothers for their children and the love children for their mothers even in estrangement and separation. In this way, LOGGERHEADS, is an important contribution to the many stories of our often complicated lifes and the superb performances, of each cast member, honor the humanity of each one of us.

4 out of 5 stars Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.......2007-02-02

Michael Learned, where have you been? I was studying your face onscreen trying to figure out where I had seen you before. You looked so gaunt and yet so streamlined in LOGGERHEADS I had no way of connecting you with the many characters you played in your heyday, except by the agonizing pain in your eyes. As many reviewers have noticed, you must have been directed with exactly the same strokes as your fellow players Tess Harper and Bonnie Hunt, for all of you constantly wear the same expressions of anguish, as though each had been hit over the head by a giant rubber mallet, so we see nothing but shellshocked pain. Then I remembered, you were on THE WALTONS.

And also I remember you played the part of Marlon Brando's wife in APOCALYPSE NOW and all of your scenes cut before release, which must have been painful for you. That sort of broken look remained on your beautiful face all throughout LOGGERHEADS, for your character has a lot of guilt to burn off, for she forced her teen daughter to give up a baby and she's never been the same since.

I hadn't seen you, Tess Harper OR Bonnie Hunt in years and years, and all of you were just super in the movie. I guess it's a truism that Hollywood doesn't know what to do with its actresses of a certain age, but happily you all got tangled up in this sophisticated, time travel picture, in which the many different seasons of a cute guy's life get explicated with thousands of close ups of your grief-filled eyes. They should re-do this movie every year or so, and all of you could switch parts and next time you could play the minister's wife and Tess Harper the teen who gives up her baby, etc.

It's only a marginal improvement, but Dr. Dolittle 2 defies the odds by rising above its popular 1998 predecessor (and once again, let's not confuse these movies with the earlier Rex Harrison musical). Eddie Murphy cakewalks through his title role with the confident professionalism of a comedian who knows when to share the spotlight--especially when he's being upstaged by a bunch of animals who steal all the punch lines. And once again the movie's aimed at a preteen audience, so many of those punch lines involve flatulence, bodily functions, and frequent use of the word butt.

The difference this time: Dr. Dolittle has settled into his talk-to-the-animals routine; his 16-year-old daughter (Raven-Symone) is getting to be a feisty handful (it turns out she's coping with a hereditary gift); and his lawyer wife (Kristen Wilson) is representing him in a trial against corporate villains who want to clear-cut a local forest. Naturally, the local critter mafia (their Don is a beaver... fugeddaboutit!) want Dolittle to fight for their cause, and this involves the successful mating of an endangered bear and a domesticated circus bear who's forgotten all the bear necessities of life in the wild. The bears are voiced by Lisa Kudrow and Steve Zahn, and they almost steal the show, but the whole menagerie (with digitally animated "talking") is equally amusing. Adults might wish that the filmmakers had tried harder to make a truly memorable sequel, but this is a movie for kids, and they're going to love it without quibbling. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Doolittle does it again!.......2006-07-13

We loved the first movie, so when the 2nd came out, it had a lot to live up to. It was as hysterical as the first... very well done! A "must" have!!

5 out of 5 stars Better than the original! Eddie Murphey at his best!.......2006-05-05

Eddie Murphey is truly the doctor, the doctor of comedy that is! This is the series to see if you need to laugh, if you love to laugh even! I was watching these because I like Raven-Symone (she plays one of his daughters). Raven-Symone is from Disney Channel's "That's So Raven". Also, the animal voices, many of them are very familiar (like Chris Rock and Cedric the Entertainer). If you like one and two, then you might want to check out "Dr. Doolittle 3". No, it does not feature Eddie Murphey unfortunately. However, this movie is the doctor for your comedy ills!

3 out of 5 stars Dr. Dolittle 2.......2005-11-02

The movie "Dr.Dolitle" was a movie directed by Steve Carr which both childen and adults will like it.It was a very interesting movie because a doctor call Dolittle was able to communicate with animals.
Dr.Dolittle had to make a type of endangered bear to give birth in order to save the forest where many types of species of animalss lived in. But at first, the male bear was anti-social not romantic and do not know how to survive in the wild, it was very playful and likes to sing songs which sounded terrible. So it was long before they began to fall for each other, as the female bear was actually attached.
The movie was very funny when the male bear was climbing on a broken tree branch, which had a bee hive. He just wanted to fulfil the female bear's wish in being a courageous bear. Dr. Dolittle advised him not to climb.Andwhen the bear reached the top,the bees in the hive stinged them.
Overall, I would give the movie 3 out of 5.

5 out of 5 stars Cute! Very Cute!.......2005-03-21

I suppose this was not as entertaining as the first Dr.Dolittle but we certainly enjoyed it. Haven't you ever wondered what animals would say if they could talk? It's always fun to imagine that and as with the first you get to hear them.
It's funny and I liked the bears; I thought they were adorable.
The acting was good, as was the storyline and bringing in some human interest, such as problems with the doctors daughter was great. All in all we enjoyed this movie and think you will as well.

1 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointing.......2005-02-20

I love Eddie Murphy, and I loved Dr. Doolittle! The previews of Dr. D II looked so funny, I couldn't wait to see it. Well, I just saw it, and my mind has still not recovered.

Dr. Doolittle 2 is one of the worst films I have ever seen. The story and dialouge are so mind-numbing, even the animated Murphy and Raven Symone, who plays his teenage daughter, couldn't salvage it. The story revolves around Dr. Doolittle trying to save the patch of forest behind his house from a land-hungry developer. To do this, Doolittle must rehab a tame bear and make him wild, because this bear is an endangered species, and if he lives in the forest, the developer can't touch it. Sounds kind of cute . . . it's not.

The bear acts and sounds like a washed up Vegas lounge singer. His whiny voice (Steve Zahn) is so annoying that even I, a passionate animal lover, could not summon a shred of sympathy for this bear. And talk about long. This whole thin storyline is dragged out for ninety minutes until I writhed in pain. And the other animals! A sad, alcoholic French monkey, a chamelon with a horrible Mexican accent, and an abusive bear and his passive female bear. When the bear is not whining, a dog is narrating the whole film in another nasal, bland voice with HORRIBLE dialouge.

A subplot involves his daughter rebelling and liking a boyfriend who is a complete idiot, is dropped off by a pizza delivery car and asks to stay two nights. Murphy actually acquieses. What an intelligent, lovely girl like Raven would see in this sorry homie is completely unbelievable.

It is hard to believe people (and animals) are going hungry when millions were wasted on this fart of a film. It seemed like the voice actors were embarrased to be saying such stupid dialouge, and that the animal actors were embarrased to be acting such stupid roles - and I don't blame them.

Blake's words "Tyger, tyger burning bright" come alive in this lush documentary from National Geographic. Tigers of the Snow spotlights the Siberian Tiger, which once roamed over the wide ranges of northern Asia but now is limited to a tiny region on the Sea of Japan. Footage of their active muscles, their piercing eyes, their regal pelt, all attest to the beauty of a dying breed. Russian and American scientists have banded together to study the 300 remaining not-so-gentle giants in an effort to save them from extinction. You'll see these men and women track tigers from helicopters, brave a mother's fury to tag her young, and strive to breed them in captivity. The effort is Herculean, given the massive logging and rampant poaching which cuts down the population and the tigers' territory, but there is hope that we can educate the next generation to protect these beautiful animals and their environment while there's still time. After all, a planet without tigers would be a much poorer place, and Tigers of the Snow shows exactly what we'd miss. --Rob Lightner

Description

Tigers of the Snow presents the beautiful one-hour program on these endangered animals from award-winning wildlife filmmaker Mark Stouffer; plus the bonus never-before-released half-hour program entitled Tiger's Eye; Siberian Tiger facts; an assortment of tiger photographs in the Photo Gallery; a map of the tigers' range in Siberia; a Siberian Tigers interactive trivia quiz; and trailers of other related National Geographic programs.

5 out of 5 stars "Hope Is The Last To Die." .......2007-04-28

I have always had an interest in the big cats, and have had a particular interest in the Siberian tiger since reading the compelling book "Tigers in the Snow" by Peter Matthiessen and Maurice Hornocker, which I also recommend. These beautiful cats have been hunted to near extinction since the collapse of the Soviet Union, and are now extremely endangered by the twin perils of poaching and industrial deforestation.

This documentary is an absolute must see for anyone who cares about the potential extinction of these magnificent creatures: it is brilliantly made and photographed, well written and narrated, and emotionally compelling. The film documents the Siberian tiger, the biggest cat on earth (males are up to ten feet long and weight up to 660 pounds) and the perils it faces. Unfortunately the single biggest peril it faces is poaching. The pelt alone can bring over $10,000 on the black market, and various other parts are used in medical quackery. I was nearly moved to tears in the introduction as video of a poaching operation was shown. The fear on the cat's face is haunting, and while I wouldn't show it to a child, I think it's important to see the senseless violence for what it is. Sadly, the Russian agents must destroy the pelts and other items of contraband made from the tigers when they catch the poachers to ensure they never get to market and support further demand for tiger products. Watching the agents burn tiger pelts was one of the saddest things I have ever seen.

The bulk of the film follows Russian and American researchers working in tandem to track, study, and save these beautiful creatures. Their love for the animals is clear in the risks they take in their studies: rappelling from a helicopter into the forest with a partially sedated tiger, tagging the ear of a cub in his den while his mother hunts, giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to an adult male tiger with labored breathing, etc.: we can all be glad that they take these risks in the effort to conserve the Siberian tigers, and unravel the mysteries of their lives.

Also on the DVD are several bonus features including still photos and a very interesting documentary, "Tiger's Eye," about photographing tigers in India. I enjoyed all the extras immensely.

The Russians have an old proverb "Hope is the last to die." These researchers and filmmakers are doing everything in their power to keep hope alive for the Siberian tigers, and I wish them the best for us and all the future generations who deserve to know these beautiful, majestic, and endangered creatures.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!.......2007-01-12

Great movie about the lifestyle and endangerment of siberian tigers. How they are studied, breeding, cubs in captivity, conservation. Wonderful movie

4 out of 5 stars Extremely well-made and interesting documentary.......2005-07-17

Superb footage of these very elusive, nearly extinct cats in the Siberian wilds. Typical National Geographic production, which is to say: well made movie, nice and clear narration, clear photography. For those of you who are into watching live chases of prey by predators, there isn't much here. But you won't be bored by the documentary at all. There are many riveting moments when you are holding your breath to see what's going to happen next. This is certainly a DVD to buy and keep.

At the end, I was in awe of the pioneering work being done by the Russian and American scientists portrayed in this movie. Also in despair about how man is destroying the last of the few remaining major jungles in the world, all in the name of lumber so that we can have nicer and nicer furniture, and more meat (by raising cattle on land that was previously forested) - but no fresh air or water.

4 out of 5 stars Nice movies about the Siberian Tigers.......2005-03-26

A nice one about the Siberian Tiger. It tells about the endangered tigers of Siberia and the efforts to save them. The videography is very good and all in all it is an interesting and educative movie for wildlife lovers.

2 out of 5 stars Not much!.......2003-09-23

There was not very much footage of the tigers here. It looks like the fillmakers spent a lot of time in some town in Siberia, which is apparently a lot like white trash America. So instead of feeling taken away, I felt like I was taken back to the Ohio. Also, the scientists spend lot of time looking for tigers or avoiding seeing the tigers so they don't get eaten. And not much time actually running with the tigers.
There is one really cool part about hunting tigers from a helicopter (with dart guns to put radio trackers on them.) They should make a video game out of that part.
I think the whole idea of a nature documentary about one animal sounds good on paper, but it works a lot better to watch a documentary about a geographic region - you get more variety in your movie.

In the closing paragraph of his 1996 review of Dragonheart, noted critic Roger Ebert summed up this adventurous fantasy quite nicely: "While no reasonable person over the age of 12 would presumably be able to take it seriously, there is nevertheless a lighthearted joy to it, a cheerfulness, an insouciance, that recalls the days when movies were content to be fun." That's precisely the quality that makes Dragonheart so appealing, despite the fact that it didn't exactly take flight and breathe fire at the box office. The movie takes itself seriously without sacrificing the wit and cleverness that make it so entertaining. It's about the last of the great dragon slayers, Bowen (Dennis Quaid), who teams up with the last of the great dragons, Draco (and voiced by Sean Connery), after they realize that killing each other would put them both out of business! So they devise a bogus dragon-slaying act that's a huge hit as they tour from village to village. Later, they must rouse the peasantry against the loutish Prince Einon (David Thewlis), whose life was once saved by Draco, but who now violates the "Old Code" of honor with a ruthless reign of terror. As Ebert rightly noted, Dragonheart is no masterpiece, and its story (which was originally conceived as a darker, more serious drama) isn't likely to capture everyone's heart (dragon or otherwise). But it's full of exciting action, witty dialogue, and gallant heroism, and in the presentation of a realistic talking dragon it's a milestone in computer-generated special effects, far surpassing the breakthroughs of Jurassic Park three years earlier. --Jeff Shannon.

While not as good as the Mummy, this movie is really great because of the violent action. Kicks the quinn out of the kiddie kid kid sequel.

I thought it was great!! What I mean to say is, that I thought computerziation was at its best,(to a certain excetent). Like in that one secen, when Draco was trying to eat Bowen; but besides that, I thought it pretty good!!

5 out of 5 stars DTS does work - Great Movie!.......2006-01-21

To get to the DTS encoding you must click on the 5.1 selection instead. It then jumps to DTS. I discovered this after a little experimentation. It's just a glitch in the DVD, but DTS DOES work! The move has superb visual effects and sound. Well worth the price!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Dragon Fantasy Film.......2005-08-05

Plot: In a revoltion by the village against his father/the King, Enion -- the young Prince and apprentice of knight Bowen (Dennis Quaid) -- is injured. As the injury could be fatal, the Queen rushes him to a dragon with the request of it's healing power. To do so, the dragon must give half of his heart to the Prince (and, of course, he does). Yet once Enion bcomes King, he disregards any teachings of the Old Code from Bowen and becomes a cruel and corrupt young man, bringing only choas to his time of reign. From here, feeling that the dragon is the reason for Enion's rebellion, Bowen vows to slay every single dragon left in existence. But once he comes upon the last dragon left (Sean Connery with vocal duties only, as the dragon is CGI), he finds him impossible to defeat. They resort to friendship instead, and Bowen gives the dragon a name: Draco (after the constellation). They team up, traveling village to village, having Bowen to pretend he slays an evil dragon (Draco) that is inhabiting whichever current village they are working (this humorous scam being done for money, of course). But soon, the past catches up to both of them and they run into the old village now cruelly run by Enion. They, with the assistance of the villagers, decide to over-run Enion and his small army. With the help of Draco, it seems possible. But Enion ends up capturing Draco. Bowen must kill Enion and save Draco, but discovers a connection between the two that makes such a task much more difficult than he'd imagined. I've given most of the plot here, but I won't say too much about this part, because it is indeed the center of the climatic drama. All I can say is that Bowen must choose between two very difficult decisions!

Dragonheart succeeds in not only a humorous and fantastic movie, but also a heart-warming one. The ending (supported by the wonderful score) brought tears to my eyes, and the story is one that will stick with any viewer for quite some time. Although the CGI dragon is a turn-off to some, be assured that for the effects available at the time, these guys used the best. Also, as for the DVD, there are some great special features including inside looks at Draco, the effects, the story, etc. This is an adventure/fantasy film perfect for almost any age and I would certainly recommend at least a rental. If you're into dragons or just fantasy in general, Dragonheart is a must-see!

5 out of 5 stars A very entertaining movie.......2005-07-27

I was just relaxing one sunday afternoon with my brother when we caught this on SciFi channel and when it was over we were very impressed with this movie. I noticed some scenes that looked like they were going to be used in another movie that I own that was made one year after this was made (I am refering to Jurassic Park II: The Lost World). I would call Rob Cohen A Steven Speilbeg clone. The bottom line is that this is a great movie, buy it.

Based on the memoirs of party-girl-turned-conservationist Kuki Gallman, I Dreamed of Africa never comes close to living up to its title; the mood is more prosaic travelogue than oneiric wonderment. After a car accident warns Kuki of her mortality, she resolves to grow up, a process that mysteriously involves marrying a man she barely knows and moving with him and her young son to the wilds of South Africa. There she learns new beau Paolo is less reliable than she thought, but also that the sun-baked plains and roaming beasts of Africa speak to her in a way the nightlife of Italy did not. (We learn of her blossoming humanity because she introduces herself to the servants; a probing study of interpersonal relationships this isn't.) Kim Basinger obviously feels connected to the role--she can stride across a room with a majestic self-righteousness that the film should have drawn upon more--but she's defeated by a script composed of repetitive vignettes that have no cumulative effect and a director (Hugh Hudson) who keeps the film's emotional impact curiously flat and diffuse except for the crass, manipulative moments every 20 minutes or so. Sure the photography's lovely, but really, how hard is it to get a nice shot of flamingoes at dawn? --Bruce Reid

1 out of 5 stars One of the Worst Movies of all Time.......2007-05-27

At least Battlefield Earth had a plot!! They really should have made this into a Banana Republic shoot or a world music video, because I will admit that it's pretty and stylish.

As for Vincent Perez fans-don't watch this for him; he comes across as purely sleazy and kinda oily and doesn't look too good.

One of those films where I for once found myself wishing that the hyper sensitive "post colonial" thought/racial police WOULD have gone after this movie!

5 out of 5 stars I absolutely loved this movie ..........2007-04-30

Personally, I find that this movie is beautifully put together & pull's at your heart strings from the very beginning. You will feel the excitement, uncertainty, love, pain & passion of the character's as they pull you into the story. I have over a few hundred movie's & this one is one of my favorites. As a bonus, some of the music is from the very talented Kenyan musician, Ayub Ogada (His simple & enchanting music will captivate you). Bottom line is, you will fall in love with the story, character's, music, ambiance & the untamed landscape that is Africa ... it will make you laugh & cry (have a box of tissue handy).

5 out of 5 stars Another White mans View of Africa........2007-03-30

Although I loved the direction of this movie.I did not like the idea
of white people in Africa Telling Africans what to do with the animals
in Africa, and appearing to be more concerned about African Animals
than Africans themselves.I find that to be very arrogant and insulting.

5 out of 5 stars I Dream Of Africa Too!!!!!.......2006-02-26

After purchasing and reading Kuki Gallmann's best selling book of the same title and having loved it, I couldn't wait to buy and see this movie. This movie is as good as the book and gives great justice to the book. Kim Basinger gives an extremely heartwarming performance portraying Kuki Gallmann. Vincent Perez delivers a great performance as Paolo, her husband and of course, being filmed on location in Beautiful Africa sure makes this a movie worth seeing!! Excellent casting, excellent filming and breath taking scenery! I Dreamed Of Africa gives us a look into the life of Kuki Gallmann, which becomes full of trials and tribulations. We witness her personal tragadies, incredible courage and her love for Africa which became her new home. After being involved in a terrible vehicle accident in Italy, Kuki fell in love with Paolo who was the husband of a mutual friend who was killed in the same vehicle accident. Kuki has a son named Emanuele, whom she called Emma. He in turn called Kuki "Pep". It had always been a dream of Kuki's to live in Africa and that dream came true after marrying Paolo. The family moved to a ranch in Kenya named Ol Ari Nyiro in Laikipia to start a life together. At first, Kuki realizes that living in Africa will take some getting used to. Having to deal with strong storms, the local wildlife and poachers turned out to be the least of Kuki's problems. We see her first tragedy in losing her husband, Paolo, in an automobile accident shortly before she was due to give birth to their daughter. We see Kuki's bravery in burying her husband knowing that he will never have the chance to see the daughter he was so anxiously awaiting. Kuki does give birth to a daughter she named Sveva. We see Emma grow up as his facination for snakes grew more and more. This worried Kuki very much. Emma would catch very dangerous poisonous snakes and would keep them in an outside shed. Kuki made her son promise to get rid of all poisonous snakes after she discovered them one day. He did not listen to her. The most heartbreaking part of this movie is when Kuki loses her son. That is a scene that is very hard to watch for you can not help but cry seeing what a mother will do in order to save her son's life. When he was 17, Emma decided to milk a puff adder and was bitten on the finger. A friend found him right away and had to go tell Kuki that her son was dying. Kuki ran into the shed where she saw her son sitting on the floor foaming at the mouth, dying quickly from the snake's venom. She immediately called for help but being many miles away from a hospital, there was not enough time. Emma's last words were..... " I am dying mamma". That was the first time he had ever called her mama and the last time. As the venom took over his whole body and time being against their side, Emma died. That scene was so heartbreaking and so sad as you saw Basinger give an outstanding grieving performance. I don't think anyone could watch that scene and remain dry eyed. So, yet another burial for Kuki but this time, it was her son. Kuki wrote and recited a lovely poem at Emma's funeral. She buried him next to Paolo at the ranch and planted a tree next to each grave. The movie goes on to show us how Kuki got involved in saving the black rhinos from the ruthless poachers by starting The Gallmann Memorial Foundation which exists to this day. After being told by everyone that she should leave Africa, Kuki was determined to stay... for Africa was her home. For anyone who has not seen this film, I strongly recommend viewing it. It is my dream too to live in Africa one day and I guess that's why this movie is so special to me but for those of you who aren't even interested in Africa, this is still a movie worth seeing because it is a true story and is truly touching as we witness what one brave woman had to go through. Kuki is truly an inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring Film.......2006-02-01

This film is a must see. "I Dreamed of Africa" is based on a true story about Kuki Gallman, her new husband Poalo, and her son. The family makes the bold decision to pick up and move to a run down ranch in beautiful Africa in order to change thier lives for the better. Together as a family they fix up the house and live thier lives in Africa. The story mainly centers around Kuki's view of thier time spent in Africa, therefore you see her pain and her perspective of everything she went through to get there and when they get there. The film has a beautiful setting with a breathtaking soundtrack. This film captures the pain and love that Kuki feels over a series of years. The transitions from year to year are very smooth and the lives of the family are easy to follow. As one watches the family go through the beauties of Africa as well as the dangers of Africa one truley begins to understand the importance of their own life . This film made me want to pick up and move to Africa as well. It is truley inspiring as you see how strong Kuki Gallman was and is and how far she will go to help her family as well as people. I highly reccomend this film.

3 out of 5 stars SOS Planet.......2007-04-12

Very good 3-D, mediocre movie. The 3-D works very well, but most is computer-generated instead of real video. It is a great addition to you HQFS 3-D collection.

4 out of 5 stars Great Effects...but is Environmentally Focused.......2006-04-12

Sure this DVD is about environmental issues (reason for 4 stars), global warming, ect. but the special effects are spectacular! You have anything from a giant octopus popin' out of the screen at you, to monkeys throwing fruit through your tv screen! It is true most of the action is CGI, though there are a few live feeds. Overall, beyond the plot, its a fun 40 mins. Great for the whole family, kids will get a kick out it, gee my Father actually liked it, go figure!

P.S.
Most of the bonus features are in 3d, as well as, trailers for other DVDs like Haunted Castle, Alien Adventure(if you want a sneek peak before buying!)

3 out of 5 stars Not bad...........2005-10-05

....but it's yet another IMAX CGI animated 3D outing (the field-sequential shutter-glasses type of 3D). Walter Cronkite (yep, he's still alive) narrates this excuse to explore computer-generated 3-D eco-systems (ocean, rain forest, etc.). Strictly for those into the "underground" field-sequential 3D cult.

2 out of 5 stars Weird format on Plasma screen.......2007-01-10

This is great film at an IMAX theater, but for some reason, when you plug in the DVD, you have this weird smaller square in the middle of the screen showing the movie, surrounded by a still background. The movie takes up about 2/3 of the screen. I can't explain it. I have a regular 42" Plasmas TV, I don't have the same problem with other DVD's.
