Description

It is the year 2049. The world has been at peace for decades but not for much longer. A meteor containing a space capsule crashes to Earth, suspiciously close to The Citagon, headquarters of the Terrestrial Peacekeeping Commission (TPC.) Inside the space capsule is a holographic message intended for the members of GUTS (the Global Unlimited Task Squad) TPC's investigative agency and special combat squad. The message warns that monstrous creatures will soon destroy the planet. GUTS is told that their only hope is to locate the Pyramid of Light in the ancient land of Tiga. Inside the Pyramid they will find the statue of an ancient warrior, who protected mankind 30 million years ago. They're told that one person, and one person only, has the power to awaken this giant so that it can resume its role as protector of the planet. Just as the hologram is about to reveal that person's identity, there's a malfunction with the space capsule and the holographic image disintegrates. Now time is running out because two monsters, Melba and Golza, have been sighted and they're headed for Tiga. The GUTS team gets to the Pyramid ahead of the monsters but they're confused about which one of the three statues inside is the true ancient warrior. They also don't know how they would go about reviving it. The monsters arrive and begin to destroy the Pyramid, along with the statues of the three ancient warriors. The GUTS team watches helplessly from their Gutswing jets overhead but Daigo, one of the GUTS fighter pilots, decides to take matters into his own hands. Using laser beam artillery on Gutswing 1, he attacks the Golza & Melba. His lasers are no match for these monsters, who have already completely destroyed the Pyramid of Light and two of the three warrior statues inside. Suddenly—Daigo's jet is hit and he loses control. At the brink of disaster, just as his jet is about to crash to the ground, Daigo is transformed into light and merges with the one remaining giant warrior statue. It is at this sudden and secret moment that Ultraman Tiga is born. Incredibly, it is Daigo who, according to the hologram, was that one and only person able to revive the ancient warrior. Ultraman Tiga battles Golza and Melba and defeats them both. Soon after, Daigo emerges unscathed from the GUTS Wing crash site but his colleagues at GUTS have no idea that their friend is Ultraman Tiga. World peace has been restored. . . at least for now

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Incredibly Well Done(Critically and fun).......2005-02-23

Episodes and rating for the firsst four episodes:

1. Inheritance of Light: A time capsule is found by the earth protecting team GUTS. It seems to forsee the future off chaos. It tells of the ground breaking Golza and sky hurling Melba that will attack the world. They can only be stopped by the ancient titan Tiga. As GUTS follows the two monsters to the ancient pyramid of titans. While GUTS try to battle Golza and Melba, the ace pilot of GUTS Daigo is killed by Melbo. Before he is burned up, Daigo is zapped into the Tiga statue that is attacked by Golza. Tiga and Daigo fuse together to reawake the titan.

My opinion: This is possibly the best episode on volume one. The monsters are great to look at, Tiga is well shown, the special effects are fairly well done for 1996, and the characters are memorable(for an Ultraman series). Critically it gets a B, in fun it gets an A+.

2. The Legend of the Stone: The time capsule strangely only talks to Daigo about that he is chosen to be one with Tiga and that more monsters will appear. During that time, a strange underground monster named Gakuma turns construction workers into stone. The GUTS fight the monster and wins. But, an even bigger and stronger and Gakuma destroys the entire construction site. Then, Daigo turns into Tiga and finishes the beast off once and for all, ending the Gakuma race.

My opinion: Very well done. Gakuma 2 is incredible, unlike the silly looking Gakuma 1. Tiga shows much power. This episode also helps explain the things left unsolved by the first episode. Critically it gets a B+, in fun it gets an A.

2. Prophecy of Evil: The leader of GUTS is used to prophisize on TV that the Kilaliens will take back the surface world and destroy Tiga. A Kilalien in diguise attacks the a building and the GUTS leader. Tiga then battles the largest of them all: the Killeroid.

My opinion: Not bad. It's somewhat impressive. The Kilaliens are ruthless and powerful. The Killeroid is majorly tough. The GUTS leader is interesting in this episode. Critically B, in fun A-.

4. Sayonarra Planet Earth: A beast that thinks that friends are food attacks and eats a space crew. Now Tiga must stop the beast from space.

My opinion: Cool. Gazoto(the monster) looks great. Tiga kicks some but in this episode as well. You can actually feel the people's terror. Critically B-, in fun A-.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Entry into the Ultra Series.......2004-03-17

Monsters - A
Comments: All pretty neat, more polished costumes than original series.

Special Effects B
- Terrible CGI
- minitures more detailed
- You can still see the wires sometimes(!)
(which is actually kinda cool)
- mecha-minitures more detailed
- more composite shots, most well-done
-> I wish they would blow up the monsters, rather than use
the VERY poorly done CGI explosions when the monsters are off'd by Tiga <-

Stories B+
- Must be tough to incorporate a giant monster
into the script every week

Sets A
- BIG improvement, sets look believable
as do the costumes

Cinematography C
- nice composition and subdued lighting but
this looks like it was shot on DV, and has a
"video-y" quality

Direction C
- pedestrian live action sequences in most episodes

Music D
- terrible. Japanese pop-synth uggh! Remember the great
march themes of the original?

Overall a worthwhile entry into the Ultra Series. Improvements intechnology have resulted in broader scope of episodes. Effects have improved but are uneven - but are always bountiful, vivid, and entertaining more than realistic. If there's one area Tsburaya should improve in future series entries, it's the music. Stories are good. Looking forward to the rest of the Tiga series and beyond. (Rena - is played by Hiatta's daughter from the original series, is quite easy on the eyes : )

Overall B

5 out of 5 stars Tiga rules!.......2004-02-11

I am so tired of people writing spoiler novels! Stick to your opinion, not writing short novels filled with details about the dvds! It's nice to hear your personal thoughts, we can buy the dvd for the rest!

4 out of 5 stars Very cool Ultradisc(s), Keep them Coming.......2004-01-22

Now I can stop trying to explain to my kids who Ultraman is!

Overall I am quite pleased with this one and my five year old son is enthralled. I do have to complain (mildly) about the lack of an english dub so I would'nt have to read all the dialog for him. However if the other option is to get the silly chopped up Power Rangers style version they did for Fox then I prefer this one by far(I do hope they do a better job with the extras on the other three sets).

Ultraman was part of my childhood so it is great to see DVD quality material here in the US. Hopefully it will keep coming!

5 out of 5 stars Tiga sounds better in Japanese instead of dubbed crap!.......2004-01-16

If you like the original Ultraman-Tiga is for you! I am 38 and watched the enitre dvd set in one sitting-completely enthralled. After 30 years of buying imports, Ultraman is available in America and in Japanese lanuguage! How sad it is that some reviewers think that everything should be dubbed and Americanized(ruined) instead of being enjoyed in it's original format Subtitles teach kids to read and broaden their horizons (to be interested in sub-titled movies/shows) SO MUCH better than the crap pushed on American TV. I grew up on the dubbed stuff and don't know how I survived it! Tiga is more for adults maybe who have kids that can appreciate something better than Mighty Morphin garbage! SO buy it and ignore the whiners!( WHY WHY WHY? Oh please!)

4 out of 5 stars Guilty pleasure.......2006-08-14

At first I thought I was getting the original series, but this is new, no "Hyata becomes...Ultraman!". But it's still pretty good, as guys rolling around in rubber suits goes.

5 out of 5 stars A Guilty Pleasure.......2004-06-02

I love this stuff...you probably do too if you're reading this. A big thanks to Funimation and 4Kids for bringing this to the U.S. on not only the FoxBox (sadly, for only a few months during 2002-2003) but now on DVD without the dubbing. In case you caught the FoxBox show, you might be glad to know that the DVD's of the show feature more video/story/action, because on FoxBox they cut it down somewhat to make room for their special promos. I don't agree with some people who say the FoxBox dubbing was atrocious...maybe Captain Iruma's American voice was miscast, and she came across as kind of an idiot with the new dubs, but most of the rest of the voice casting was pretty good, and I have to admit they came up with some pretty funny stuff. Also, their theme song was way better than the J-pop theme. But I'm perfectly happy with the DVD release with all of the original audio and subtitles. Horii is still funny. It would sound ridiculous to dub in English the Japanese dialog verbatim, but with the subtitling it works. If you're a Mio Takagi fan (Captain Iruma) you'll particularly like episodes 3 and 25 (of the ones I've seen) but most of the episodes are pretty enjoyable with a great cast. Don't expect consistent "Independence Day"-quality special effects, but many of the SFX are quite good.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2004-04-06

These DVDs are a must have for any Ultraman fan. These eps are full length, with or without subtitles and the original Japanese soundtrack. For as long as we here in the US have waited for this, 4Kids and Funimation deserve a big thanks.

The only knit picky thing would be the extras. There is a monster gallery with only 3 of the monsters shown. who cares??

If you are a fan of Ultraman, Space Giants, Johnny Sokko or Godzilla you owe it to yourself to get the entire series.

The epsoides were very good. Inheritance of darkness was a good one. In one epsoide, ULTRAMAN TIGA TEAMS UP WITH THE ORIGANAL ULTRAMAN!!!!! HOW COOL IS THAT? Anyways, I would have given this a 5 If they did not screw up the epsoide names on the back of the dvd case. On the back, it lists epsoides 47-52 with the same names as the names of epsoides 34-39 on volume 3 dvd.
Lukly, they are not the same epsoides on the disk. Anyways, a must have for ultrafans or just fans of kaiju movies in gerneral, or wanting something good for the kids and teaching them to learn how to read.

1 out of 5 stars Ultraman Tiga & Ultraman Dyna - A Poor Entry In the Ultra Series.......2007-06-04

Being a fan of the ORIGINAL ULTRAMAN series (see my reviews for the Vol. 1 or Vol. 2 DVD collection) I recently watched the Ultraman Tiga and Ultraman Dyna so-called "movie". It was absolutely HORRIBLE. The English dub "acting" was probably the WORST I've ever heard and even when I finished watching (reading) the movie in Japanese with English subtitles it DID NOT help the picture any. Sure, I'll give the movie credit for a good monster design. The giant spidery-like thingy that "killed" Ultraman Dyna was impressive looking, but that's probably where my "impression" with the film ends. The stunt pulled with the "return" of Ultraman Tiga where he was manifest through the "light of the people" (whatever that is) was also a lame idea. I'm also a fan of Ultraman Tiga (I own vols. 1&2 on DVD) so I was assuming this film could deliver the goods, needless to say, Tiga's appearance did not save the picture from being a complete failure. I've noticed that many of the more recent Ultramen (Dyna, Moebius, Cosmos, etc.) do not ,somehow, share the originality and charm of the original Ultraman series. Why this is so, I'm not exactly sure. ULTRAMAN is a great, classic japanese hero and deserves a much better legacy than this kind of rubbish.

    2 out of 5 stars It's "OK".......2005-12-09

I know some folks prefer subtitled movies over the dubbed varieties, but I don't like to work that hard for my mindless entertainment.
So, for this movie I watched the dubbed version and I felt it really took alot away from the action.
The voice-acting wasn't as emotional as what was depicted on the screen (in fact it seemed downright "flat"), and at times they repeated the start of their lines when they spoke.
It seemed as if the people were reading the script for the very first time.
As for the characters, both Ultramen were cool. The monsters... not so much.

The acting was what I've come to expect from these types of films. I'm not looking for Oscar-winning material, so I wasn't surprised by the over-the-top gestures, and over-reactions to events played out on the screen.
The fight scenes were fun, though.

Being a fan of Godzilla, I couldn't pass up an opportunity to see somebody in a rubber spaceman suit beat the tar out of other rubber-suit monsters. Unfortunately this movie didn't live up to my expectations.

I'd recommend it if you have kids, as the violence is pretty tame, and the monsters aren't very threatening. Plus, the good guys win in the end. (oops! I gave it away)
Otherwise, it really isn't worth buying.
    It's maybe a rental for 'kid's night'.

    3 out of 5 stars Cool GUTS!!.......2003-09-08

I would have given it a 4-star rating if it were not for the "cheesy" part right before Ultraman Tiga makes the entrance. As a TV series, Ultraman Dyna shines with the GUTS members having a good sense of humor (and they are an attractive lot) unlike previous teams from previous Ultraman shows where they didn't really understand the concept of humor except for the funny bunch from the Ultraman Zearth movies (but then again, Ultraman Zearth is intended to be funny and outrageous). I also think that the Captain (Hibiki) is the coolest (and funniest) so far, but that side of his character is not fully explored or utilized in this storyline.

The production is above average (I still think the earlier Ultraman Tiga- The Final Odyssey movie had the best special effects and top-notch production) and it's great to see the team members from Ultraman Tiga interacting with Dyna's GUTS. I am sure since Ultraman Tiga is showing on American television, viewers would get a better idea on the storyline regarding the relationship between these two teams.

A worthwhile watch if you are into this genre.

    4 out of 5 stars Rock-Steady!.......2002-06-24

In a movie summer suffering from actors fighting digital effects, it was really fun to plug in an old school rubber monster movie. Similar to it's Godzilla contemporary, Ultraman has been slicked out, shot on better quality stock, and some b-level computer generated effects have replaced the models I grew up with, but the core action still boils down to a guy dressed up as a robot fighting a giant rubber monster. Which if you're down with that, you're in for a treat.
As for the story, it's about this guy, Asuka, one of the people on earth who has been given the mantle of becoming Ultraman in the name of defending humanity. Ultraman (Dyna) comes up against an alien foe bent on eliminating mankind so they can have the planet for themselves. Faced with an impossible challenge, and the doomsday clock ticking, Dyna has to discover the secret his predescessor, Ultraman Tiga, employed to defend mankind in its previous darkest hour. I was really surprised but by the end of this film I was moved. Not moved like you are by the end of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", but I actually found aspects of the characters to invest myself in. If you're in to this genre, this film is a great buy.

4 out of 5 stars Rubber Monsters Rule.......2002-06-13

Every child from the 60's remembers Ultraman which is the reason I purchased this DVD. Ultraman is still cool and the rubber monsters rule. Lots of fake buildings get destroy and the heroes save the day. What can be better?

Oh please!)
